You're either part of the solution, or you're part of the problem”. This week: the crew discusses new songs from Lacuna Coil feat. Ash Costello, DJ Sabrina The Teenage DJ, Backxwash, Alcest, and Gatecreeper! In
Hell Bent For Metal host Tom has been back to Roadburn to host another panel about queerness in heavy music, and reports back on how the festival's efforts to make themselves a welcoming, inclusive place have clearly, visibly paid off.The show's been on hiatus due to a bereavement, with Roadburn being the one bright light in the dark. And while the panel (which featured Body Void, Pupil Slicer, Backxwash, and OvO) was a great moment for queerness in heavy music – and Tom personally – it wasn't the only reason that was the case, as the hosts discuss. There's also a rundown of the musical side of a unique festival, including unexpected joy found in Sangre de Muérdago and Oiseaux-Tempête (spelling FAO Matt), and the more expected highlights of the four days in Tilburg.Plus this episode's visit to the Hate Crew Gaybar sees Heimdal by Enslaved and Deathless by Hellish Form added to the jukebox.
In this wide-ranging conversation, they touch on everything from her love of Baldur's Gate and Forza Horizon, to her favorite anime. Of course, they also discuss Backxwash's fantastic new album I Lie Here Buried With My Rings And My Dresses, getting into her thought process behind the sound of the album as well as discussing some of the collaborators she worked with on the new record. Remfry and Steve honour Skunk Anansie's Skin as she is set to receive an OBE from The Queen (the monarch, not the band), discuss Roger Waters being aggy over social media and James Labrie guesting on his son's band's cover of Kickstart my Heart by Mötley Crüe, a song that feels as if it were recorded single-handedly with the intention of enraging us both. We review new releases including I Lie Here Buried With My Rings and My Dresses by Backxwash, Migration by Bossk, Aggressive Continuum by Fear Factory, Path of Wellness by Sleater-Kinney and Arrows In Words From the Sky by Machine Head. Your hosts this episode: Patrique OptimalAudio Traviud In this episode the pod is joined by returning guest Traviud to discuss more albums from the year that have really caught their interests. 2020 has been called a slow year in Hip Hop by many (and a disaster for lots of other reasons) but your hosts actually have a lot that they think is worthy of your attention and listens from the genre this year. From left field artists such as Backxwash and her Horrorcore stories of transitioning, returning veterans like Curren$y and Harry Fraud and even a Killah Priest album that outshines Jay Electronica in every way, the pod goes through the highlights of the last leg of 2020 before the year end. "It's very different to be in such freedom. If I had released this music back home, I don't think anyone would play it. You have to keep it on the real real real down low for your own safety. You have to be careful because it can get real bad for you, because if you don't go to jail — someone is going to try to kill you." — BackxwashThis episode was recorded live on location at Long Winter, hosted by Workman Arts in February 2020.Backxwash is any incredibly prolific rapper and producer from Montreal by way of Lusaka, Zambia. She first caught my attention in late 2018 with a record named "Black Sailor Moon," and then with her spiritual rap opus "Deviancy," which came out in 2019. Backxwash's music is equally inspired by punchline rappers like Papoose, the bravado of the Dead Kennedys, and the repetitive, revelatory chants of her tribe, the Tumbuka. We had this conversation in front of a live audience, so you can hear people laughing and shuffling, and bands playing next door. Even though she had a show to play a few hours later, Backxwash was in high spirits and game to chat about everything from her early love of backpack rap to making creative choices as a trans musician, as well as the legacy and impact of British colonialism and American imperialism on her home country of Zambia.Backxwash: backxwash.bandcamp.comMusic: Backxwash, "Bad Juju," Backxwash, "HETERONOMY"Theme song: "Dark Beings" by LALOriginal music provided by Jahmal PadmoreSupport this work
