¡NO PASARÁN!... / hchistoriacontemporanea Buy Me A Coffee: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/hchistoria Blog: https://hchistoriacontemporanea.com/blog Redes Sociales. In Vladimir Putin's warped view of the past, Ukraine was only able to seek independence in 1991 because of a mistake made by another Vladimir nearly 70 years before. In his zeal to obscure Ukrainian national identity, Russia's dictator blames the Bolshevik leader Vladimir Lenin for “creating” an independent Ukraine in 1922 “by separating, severing what is historically Russian land.” These two events – the Bolshevik revolution and Russia's invasion of Ukraine – are not connected only in Putin's imagination. They are linked through a history of appalling violence and destruction. The place names of battles of the Russian civil war a century ago are familiar to anyone following today's news of Russia's military fiasco in Ukraine. In this episode, the esteemed military historian Antony Beevor discusses the parallels between the civil war that birthed the Soviet Union and Putin's drive to turn Ukraine into a client state – a plan that has, thus far, failed. Moreover, the Bolshevik coup d'etat of October, 1917, far from an obscure bit of history, shaped the course of the twentieth century as few other events did. Antony Beevor is the author of "Russia: Revolution and Civil War, 1917-1921."
Styrker fra bl.a. Musik: Adi Zukanovic.

Russian president Vladimir Putin is "a very dangerous beast," says preeminent military historian Antony Beevor. As war rages in Ukraine, an unpredictable dictator may risk expanding the war to involve NATO members such as the Baltic states. Putin has fallen into the same trap as past Russian and Soviet leaders, obsessed with a perceived encirclement by implacable, hostile powers to the west. In this episode, Sir Antony Beevor explains the deep historical roots of the conflict in Eastern Europe, and the ways in which Putin is trying to turn back the clock to an imperial past.
In this repost of a previous interview, Professor Antony Beevor speaks here with Claudia Cragg about his book ''. It is, horribly, more relevant today than it should be. Why do 'those in power' constantly push for war, and what about the aftermath, the 'cleanup' with the so-called 'Win'. History ALWAYS repeats itself. The Normandy Landings that took place on D-Day involved by far the largest invasion fleet ever known. The scale of the undertaking was simply awesome. What followed them was some of the most cunning and ferocious fighting of the war, at times as savage as anything seen on the Eastern Front. As casualties mounted, so too did the tensions between the principal commanders on both sides. Meanwhile, French civilians caught in the middle of these battlefields or under Allied bombing endured terrible suffering. The most vivid and well-researched account yet of the battle of Normandy. As with and , Antony Beevor's gripping narrative conveys the true experience of war. His best known works prior to this include the best-selling and and recount the battles between the and . They have been praised for their vivid, compelling style, their treatment of the ordinary lives of combatants and civilians and the use of newly disclosed documents from Soviet archives.Beevor's works have been used as sources and credited as such in many recent about . Another one of his best known works is for which he won the , administered by the for stimulating interest in and culture. Beevor is descended from a long line of women writers, being a son of (born Carinthia Jane Waterfield, 22 December 1911 – 29 August 1995), herself the daughter of Lina Waterfield, and a descendant of (author of a travelogue on ). Kinta Beevor wrote A Tuscan Childhood. Antony Beevor is married to Hon. , daughter of Duff Cooper, granddaughter of . He was educated at and . He studied under the famous military historian . Beevor is a former officer with the who served in and for five years before resigning his commission. He has published several popular histories on and the 20th century in general. Professor Beevor has encountered criticism on his work in . The Russian ambassador to the UK denounced the book as "lies" and "slander against the people who saved the world from Nazism". , a professor and President of the , has charged that Beevor is merely resurrecting the discredited and racist views of historians, who depicted Soviet troops as subhuman "Asiatic hordes"In an interview with , Rzheshevsky admitted that he had only read excerpts from Berlin: The Downfall 1945 and had not seen the book's source notes. He claimed that Beevor's use of phrases such as "Berliners remember" and "the experiences of the raped German women" were better suited "for pulp fiction, than scientific research." Rzheshevsky also defended Soviet reprisals against Germans, stating that the Germans could have expected an "avalanche of revenge". Beevor responded to Russian criticism on his book . This criticism centres on the book's discussion of atrocities committed by the Red Army against German civilians – in particular, the extremely widespread rape of German women and female Russian forced labourers, both before and after the end of the war. Beevor stated however that German women were part of a society that supported Hitler and thus can't be seen as victims in the same way than Jews, Poles and Russians. Beevor, though, stated that he was accused by the Russian media of being the "chief slanderer of the Red Army" for describing repeated and relentless rape by the of young women taken from the Soviet Union by the Nazis for slave labor. Beevor states that he used excerpts from the report of General Tsigankov, the chief of the political department of the , to cite the incident. He responded to Rzheshevsky by saying, "Professor O.A. Rzheshevsky even accused me of repeating Nazi propaganda, when in fact the bulk of the evidence on the subject came from Soviet sources, especially the NKVD reports in GARF (), and a wide range of reliable personal accounts." Beevor hopes Russian historians will take a more objective approach to material in their own archives which are at odds to the heroic myth of the Red Army as "liberators" in 1945. "Other historians such as , (see here also an interview with Richard Overy on his latest book) a historian from , have criticised Russian "outrage" at the book and defended Beevor. Overy accused the Russians of refusing to acknowledge , "Partly this is because they felt that much of it was justified vengeance against an enemy who committed much worse, and partly it was because they were writing the victors' history.

In this episode, we are joined by world-renowned war historian Sir Antony Beevor. When someone says the Soviet Union, not the Western allies, defeated Nazism, they can point to this date, June 22, 1941, as a pivotal moment in that narrative. Eighty years ago today, the largest invasion in history began as more than three million German soldiers attacked the USSR in Operation Barbarossa. The battle caused a cataclysm; millions of people were brutally killed, including more than a million Soviet Jews. But the USSR survived, and Barbarossa's outcome helped shape our modern world.

Let´s leave it to Beevor!!!!
Deretter ga han ut Inside The British Army (1990), Crete - The Battle and the Resistance (1991), og Paris after the Liberation 1944 -1949 (1994).

The pre-eminent military historian Antony Beevor attended Sandhurst and served in the 11th Hussars before writing four novels and twelve books of non-fiction (including the gripping Stalingrad and Berlin). In his latest work – Arnhem: The Battle for the Bridges 1944 – he has mined Dutch, British, Polish, German, and American archives, and previously overlooked sources, to vividly document heroism and incompetence in the biggest ever airborne battle. The military disaster saw colossal casualties and resulted in brutal Nazi reprisals against Dutch citizens. Beevor, a master of integrating sources with stories, is in conversation with Michael Williams. Supported by Heartland Bank.

Quick note for Patrons: As mentioned in the episode, Alex and I will be doing periodic premium episodes on Orwell essays over the coming months as a thank you for your support. Our first George Orwell episode, of many! This time, his essay 'Looking Back on the Spanish War' written August 1942, with sections I, II, III, and VII printed in New Road, June 1943. Alex gives us an overview of religious and monarchical conflict in pre-modern Spain. Libertarian Socialism/Anarchism's early success in Spain. Franco's counterrevolutionary coup. Orwell's critique of the away-from-the-front left. Why right-wing atrocities are, as a rule, worse than leftist atrocities. Orwell's attempt to join the communists, becoming a Trotskyist, sympathy for Anarchists, and eventual smearing as a Fascist by Stainists. Why both Liberals and Communists downplayed the revolutionary nature of the war to focus on fighting fascism. Orwell's fear for the future of history under totalitarianism. How the US and UK let fascism win in Spain. Why the working class is, long term, fascisms biigest threat. Why there is hardly ever a war in which it doesn't matter who wins. ENG: We love all our guests equally but seriously, we’re starstruck to have Sir Antony Beevor in the studio. Beevor is an unparalleled writer of military history and is best known for his works Stalingrad and Berlin – The Downfall 1945. He’s here to talk about his new book Arnhem – The Battle for The Bridges, 1944, but will also tell our historiographer Mattis Bergwall the tale of why he can’t travel to Russia, answer a bunch of listeners questions and explain just how bloodthirsty the allies (!) were during Market Garden. Enjoy! This weeks episode is part two of our view at the wider data availability market as I'm joined by three more guests from the recent VeeamON event to continue our discussion. This week we look at how our data availability strategy is not and can not just be a discussion for the technical department and must be elevated into our overall business strategy. We also look how technology trends are affecting our views of backup, recovery and availability. First I'm joined by Dave Stevens of Data Gravity as we chat about how backup data can be a source of valuable information, as well as a crucial part in helping us to be more secure, as well as compliant with ever more stringent data governance rules. Next I chat with Mike Beevor of HCI vendor Pivot3 about how simplifying our approach to system availability can be a huge benefit. Mike also makes a great point about how, although focussing on application and data availability is right, we must consider the impact on our wider infrastructure, because if we don't we run the risk of doing more "harm than good". Last but my no means least I speak with Senior Research Analyst at IDC, Andrew Smith, we chat about availability as part of the wider storage market and how over time, as vendors gain feature parity, their goal has to become to add additional value, particularly in areas such as security and analytics. It's another information packed show, I hope you enjoy it. For full show notes - http://wp.me/p4IvtA-18k
