Episode DescriptionAs America prepares to commemorate Juneteenth, Jason Herbert sits down with legendary actor Ben Vereen and breakout star Amethyst Davis for a powerful conversation about The Grey House—the Civil War-era drama that explores freedom, resistance, and the unfinished legacy of slavery. Drawing on their experiences bringing the series to life, Vereen and Davis reflect on portraying Black Americans during Reconstruction, the importance of telling stories that many would rather forget, and why history remains a battleground today. The conversation moves beyond filmmaking to explore Black liberation, historical memory, women's leadership during the Underground Railroad, and the resilience that carried generations through slavery and beyond. Vereen shares why America still needs "another slave story," while Davis discusses portraying an educated, formerly enslaved Black heroine whose intelligence and courage challenge long-held stereotypes. Together, they reflect on filming in Romania, working with director Roland Joffé, the emotional weight of key scenes, and why Juneteenth should become a day for families to gather and honor their ancestors. This is more than a conversation about television—it's a discussion about why history matters, why these stories must continue to be told, and how remembering the past offers hope for the future.

Today we head back to Indianapolis with the podcast Urban Roots. In the 1950s and 1960s, Ms. Jean Spears was a young mother and burgeoning preservationist. She saved antiques from houses about to be demolished; she bought a home in a white slum and renovated it; later on, she did the same with a historic home in the black neighborhood near Indiana Avenue. In the eighties, she and some neighbors started digging into this black neighborhood's history, uncovering the names of Black doctors, civic leaders, and other professionals who had lived there, many of whom had worked for Madam C.J. Walker. She helped rename the neighborhood to Ransom Place, in honor of Freeman Ransom, Madam Walker's prodigious lawyer. And in 1991, they succeeded in getting the Ransom Place Historic District included in the National Register of Historic Places. Thanks in no small part to the connection to Madam C.J. Walker, Jean Spears was able to save this pocket of Black history, in an area that — as we explained last episode — the city of Indianapolis had almost erased from memory. But black Indy history is about more than Madam Walker, and other stories and places in the city need protection, too. In this episode, we'll introduce you to three Black women who are carrying on what Ms. Jean Spears started — safeguarding these little-known stories of the past and guiding Indianapolis toward a brighter future. History doesn't only live in books. It lives in who gets remembered, who gets silenced, and who chooses to speak anyway! Meet Kristi Williams, a descendant of the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre and member of Historic Vernon AME Church, who brings a deeply personal lens to historical preservation, and Emma Willis, who complements this perspective by focusing on advocacy, ethical philanthropy, and the importance of treating lived experience with care and dignity. Together, they emphasize how community memory and historical truth are shaped by those closest to it. The discussion expands into the erasure of Black history in education, including policies such as Oklahoma's House Bill 1775, and the broader challenge of restricted narratives in schools. Kristi and Emma highlight practical ways everyday people can contribute, such as reading widely, including banned books, journaling present-day experiences, and preserving family and ancestral documents. They also explore philanthropy as a relational practice rather than transactional giving, stressing collaboration with communities. Ultimately, the conversation connects personal storytelling, institutional responsibility, and collective action as essential tools for preserving history and strengthening democracy. In this episode, you will be able to:  Understand how everyday people contribute to preserving history. Recognize the importance of descendant-led storytelling in historical preservation. Identify how oral histories and personal archives protect erased narratives. Analyze the impact of banning or restricting historical books. Appreciate the role of Black history in strengthening democratic understanding. Describe how philanthropy can support community-led cultural preservation. We sit down with historian and journalist Lori L. Tharps, co-author of *Hair Story: Untangling the Roots of Black Hair in America*, to pull that script apart and replace it with actual context. If you've ever second-guessed your texture, your style choices, or what “professional” is supposed to look like, this one is for you.We start with Lori's personal path and how a graduate school thesis on Black hair was dismissed as not “serious” scholarship, until the research proved otherwise. From workplace microaggressions to the quiet reality that many of us learned more about white hair than our own, we talk about how misinformation becomes internalized and why the language we use about our hair matters. Then we go deeper into Black hair history: pre-colonial African societies where hair worked like an identity system, carrying signals of community, status, and spirituality. We also get honest about cultural appropriation versus cultural appreciation, the natural hair movement's global ripple effects, and how the Black hair industry grew from pre-Civil War barbering and styling into a multi-billion-dollar economy that's often judged with a double standard. You'll leave with a cleaner frame: Black hair isn't “hard,” it's unique, delicate, and powerful, and it only becomes a problem inside systems that refuse to understand it. This episode is juicy, and it does have gossip — but I admit that it's actually less about specific juicy gossip and more about why we love juicy gossip... gossip about celebrities, gossip about extended family, gossip about our coworkers and frenemies and reality stars and even random people involved in high drama. We love reading gossip, whispering gossip, talking shit about people who gossip too much (or not enough)... gossip is a primary means of making sense of the world, and we should all talk (and think) about it more. Nichole Hill, host of the fantastic podcast Our Ancestors Were Messy, joins me to do just that. Thanks to the sponsors of today's episode! As our co-host Zoe Rom puts it: "Women are told they need to do fasting, creatine, lifting, fueling, and recovery differently than men. Sometimes the science backs it. More often the "different" is a marketing mechanism: invent a gendered problem, sell a gendered protocol, collect the markup." What's going on here? Where have you seen it, what pisses you off about it... take this wherever you'd like. WHITE LADY HAIR! Cultural critic Sarah Mesle will be joining us to talk about her new book Tangled: Seven Iconic Moments in White Women's Hair and What They Tell Us About Power, Pleasure, and Complicity. If there's a white lady whose hair interests you, I guarantee you it interests Sarah, too. We can talk about specific celebrity/actress haircuts but also specific styles/trends. I cannot wait for this one. INTERGENERATIONAL FRIENDSHIP with Andrew Sean Greer, author of Less (and Villa Coco, a new book with an intergenerational friendship at its center). Today I am joined by Jordan Clark (Milestone Initiative Recipient) and Creator of Ancestral Recall for Ahoy Comics. I've been wanting to talk about this book for sometime now I've heard many of my peers rave about the story. Melvin Waring is at an age where he is set in his ways. He has a loving wife June who takes a solid interest in his artwork and his business and their dynamic is a force in this book because one day Melvin wakes up to June missing as people go missing in his neighborhood by a mysterious corporation. Trapped in an instinctual bridge from Past to Present and Present to Future we are pulled through time. All while methodically going through a recall in certain situations to become figures in Black History such as Bill Pickett or Andre Lorde, and Philip Marlowe. Educational and full of suspense and utter Sci-Fi that keeps you on a ride.Written by Jordan ClarkArtwork by Atagun IlhanColors by Pippa BowlandLetters by Rob Steen
