On this week's episode of The 1 Girl Revolution Podcast, we welcome Kimba Langas, co-founder of Free the Girls - a nonprofit organization that provides economic empowerment and reintegration services to survivors of sex trafficking. Kimba is an Emmy-award winning producer and 20+ year veteran of the television and video production industry, and she has always had a passion for storytelling. In 2010, as a new mother and freelancer, the story of modern-day slavery and sex trafficking wasn't even on her radar. But when her friend Dave asked Kimba to partner with him on a new organization he wanted to start to empower survivors of sex trafficking, she said “yes!” and jumped all in. Little did she know how the issue of sex trafficking and her work with Free the Girls would change her life. Free The Girls is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization offering sustainable economic opportunities among other integral reintegrative services to survivors of sex trafficking. Free the Girls exists to help women escaping sex trafficking reintegrate into their communities and reclaim their lives. They do that through micro-entrepreneurship and helping these survivors build their own businesses. While it may not intuitively seem to be the first step for women to begin their healing from the trauma of exploitation, economic empowerment is vital for that healing process. If a woman is unable to meet her basic needs of food and shelter it is very likely she will go back into a life of survival sex work. Kimba served as Executive Director of Free The Girls for five years, on the Board of Directors for three years, and continues to act as an advisor and mentor to the organization's leadership. She recently re-joined the Free The Girls leadership as interim president of the Board of Directors, and is a member two service organizations: Dry Creek Sertoma Club, and GFWC's Southwest Region Woman's Club. Kimba hopes her experience serves as an example that global change requires people from all types of backgrounds to step up and offer what they can where they are. Her non-profit experience drives her passion for helping other non-profits as a volunteer, particularly those focused on women, social justice, and addressing the root causes of exploitation in vulnerable populations. In this episode, you'll hear: Kimba's inspiring life story; About Kimba's life and career before Free the Girls' How Kimba first learned about sex trafficking and how the idea for Free the Girls sparked; The story of how Kimba and a friend founded Free the Girls to empower women and girls who are exiting sex trafficking; The inspiring stories of women and girls who have been empowered by the work of Free the Girls;; And so much more. While many organizations promote and publicize their ESG (Environmental, Social, & Governance) efforts, still there exist significant gaps between concepts and execution. This is especially true for the Social and Governance dimensions. Environmental initiatives are generally maturing. However, the Social aspect is receiving preliminary, and sometimes misguided, attention, and the Governance aspect is often no more than a few paragraphs in the annual report. Why is this so, and how can performance be improved? For Episode # 52 of my podcast, The World Class Leaders Show, I was honored to host Miriam González Durántez. Miriam is an international trade lawyer who currently leads the trade and EU regulation practice of US law firm, Cohen & Gresser, and is a founding partner of Altius. Her extensive legal experience includes advising clients on intricate EU regulatory, compliance, and trade matters, and Miriam serves on several influential boards and advisory committees. Miriam is the Founder and Chair of Inspiring Girls International, a global charity dedicated to raising the aspirations of young girls around the world by connecting schoolgirls and women role models. The campaign operates in nearly 30 countries across the globe and has led the highly praised global campaign #ThisLittleGirlIsMe. By listening to this podcast episode, you will hear: Perspectives on each dimension of Environmental, Social & Governance initiatives Aspects and requirements for monetization of ESG efforts Five key factors for making a global impact. Welcome to Her Ambitious Career, the personal branding and success podcast for corporate women. This is Episode 8, “ 'This Little Girl Is Me - How Having Diverse Female Role Models Is Crucial For Our Girls' Success” with my guest, Miriam González Durántez, founder of the charity Inspiring Girls. You may have seen the #thislittlegirlisme campaign currently going viral across social channels. So many of the stories being shared are absolutely awe-inspiring.The campaign was started by Inspiring Girls and encourages women, from all walks of life, to share their stories of overcoming adversity, falling and succeeding in a bid to encourage young girls globally to expand their horizons and chase down their dreams. The campaign is here to mark International Day of The Girl, on 11 October 2021.I had the absolute pleasure and privilege to speak with Miriam about the campaign and the vision for Inspiring Girls and, being a mum to both a girl and a boy, I am thrilled to bring this episode to you today. Rebecca x Quotes from this episode: “I am super grateful to all those big names (Sheryl Sandberg, Annie Lennox and Ellie Cole have all posted their own personal stories for example) for participating, because of course giving volume to the campaign is essential, but we are trying to shine a light on the others, the amazing role models who are not normally on television or magazines – and they are wonderful role models to girls.” (Miriam González Durántez, guest on ‘Her Ambitious Career' Podcast)“One of my favourite stories was a lady who works in a supermarket who said, ‘I had all these big dreams as a little girl but they just didn't happen. I ended up working in a supermarket. And it was [only] with Covid that I realised how important my job is.' That is what this campaign is about. It's about diversity of role models, it is about every woman from all walks of life, from all backgrounds. Not every girl is going to be CEO of the big investment bank or working in tech. Some may not be able to - some may not want to – but all of them deserve role models.” (Miriam González Durántez, guest on ‘Her Ambitious Career' Podcast) Guest Bio:Miriam González Durántez is an international trade lawyer, board member, author and Founder of Inspiring Girls International, a global charity dedicated to raising the aspirations of young girls by connecting them with women role models. The campaign is now active in 28 countries around the world, with women mentors sharing their stories and advice in schools and online. If you're keen to get involved with the campaign, share your story online via social channels before 11 October (International Day of the Girl 2021) and be sure to add the hashtag #thislittlegirlisme. Adelante episodio #50. Michelle. Melania. Herr Merkel. If (big if) there was a "Political First Partners" WhatsApp group, they'd be there. And until October 2018, so would Miriam. But her husband has gone to Facebook to be their new Head of Global Affairs and Communications and she has (metaphorically) left the group. This week, Kevin says a great big "hola" to Miriam González Durántez. Not Mrs Clegg. By day she's an international trade rights lawyer. By night she's chief championeer of young girls' rights through her brainchild inspiringgirls.org. Brexit, Henderson's Relish, cooking blogs, and a future where Nick could join the aforementioned mythical WhatsApp group – this episode has got it all. As a Yorkshireman would say, "de nada". [// Pregenerate link to episode ahead of time: - clicktotweet.com- sharelinkgenerator.com]: # This week, we take a bit more of a convention-al bent, to talk about the wider world of women heroes in media with special guest, Emily Gonsalves (con chair of the [Pretty Heroes convention](https://www.prettyheroes.com/)). We talk about representation of women in comics, tv, anime and manga and a LOT more. Next week, we continue the magic with a trip to a little place that's a small world after world: that's right, we'll be talking about fans of Disney theme parks! ## Where can I learn more about Emily Gonsalves and the Pretty Heroes convention? Pretty Heroes is a convention dedicated to showcasing strong female characters and it's the first "girl power" convention in Toronto. It started as the Toronto Sailor Moon Celebration and grew with fan demand to expand into a convention with a new name (but the same heart) featuring a variety of anime, cute items, "girly" items, and plenty of intriguing female characters. The founder and con chair, Emily Gonsalves, is a professional graphic designer and marketing manager by day, but she also used to "moonlight" as a regular reporter for the Sailor Moon focused blog "Moon Chase." You can also find Emily at other conventions running panels about Sailor Moon, art, fandom, and social media marketing.
