America's bookstores have always been about more than just books, but the role they play in American society has changed over the years. In this episode, Evan Friss joins us for a conversation about his New York Times Bestseller, The Bookshop: A History of the American Bookstore (Viking, 2023), and the unique place that bookstores – and those who operate them – have held in American society from the colonial era to our own. Dr. Evan Friss is Professor of History at James Madison University and the author of multiple books, including On Bicycles: A 200 Year History of Cycling in New York City (Columbia University Press, 2019). You can find out more about his work at his website, EvanFriss.com. A special thanks to our friend, Dane Honeycutt, for recommending that we invite Evan on the show to discuss The Bookshop. This episode was edited by Ben Sawyer.
Jeśli Wy też lubicie takie rytuały, to przesłuchajcie odcinek do końca, ponieważ mam dla Was prezent. A tymczasem zapraszam na rozmowę z moją fantastyczna gościnią Olgą Drendą.Olga Drenda – antropolożka, pisarka, eseistka i tłumaczka. There is a lot going on that will not end well for many people. Something huge is coming down the pipeline. Protect yourself by staying away from obvious trouble. Yes, there are serious foreign assets involved. Bookstore are known to drop the dog whistle hints of things to come. Left groups are getting together and plotting. They don't think we know. Tina Peters does not deserve to be in prison. Even the Ivy League professors are asking questions. Setting the bar on what speech is allowed. The judge was biased and aggressive. There is collusion and communication to prove it. Violence is part of left coms. Let's keep an eye on things and concentrate on the funding. The main media pitch is an operation. When you are young at 20, it seems like a weird age. When we were in Rome, something was going on. Progress is being made in the real justice category. Now, our persistence is key. We have to keep fighting.
Matthew D. Nelsen, an Assistant Professor of Political Science at the University of Miami, has a new book out that focuses on the content of civic education in the United States, and how we learn about the diverse and varied history of the United States. There is an ongoing and contemporary conversation about civic education in the United States, and what should and should not be taught in explaining the United States, how it works, who is part of it, and how it has evolved over four centuries. Nelsen's work, The Color of Civics: Civic Education for a Multiracial Democracy (Oxford UP, 2023), pays close attention to what happens in classrooms, particularly urban classrooms, when these lessons are taught, and how students respond to these curricula and experiences. What he finds should be of interest to all of us, since it gets to the very heart of civic education, which is how to teach young people about being citizens in a democracy. Nelsen poses these broader questions throughout the book: Who is learning what? What is the general social studies curriculum that discusses “how a bill becomes a law” and the basic information about separation of powers and checks and balances? How is this curriculum, which is both somewhat abstract and also an idealized version of the American political system, taught, and how is it engaged by students? Nelsen found a variety of answers, but what is of particular interest is that there are teachers and instructors who have taken this somewhat static curriculum, and integrated different dimensions to it, engaging students in understandings of social movements, highlighting activities by a number of different political leaders, from both mainstream and marginalized groups. When the education becomes more multifaceted, it pulls in more students, and allows them to see themselves in these activities, even in leadership roles. And it also is more encompassing for all of the students in the classroom, regardless of race or other identity groupings. The Color of Civics pulls together a variety of forms and kinds of research methodology to understand what happens in classrooms and how students learn and see themselves within this fabric of American democracy. Using qualitative, quantitative, and ethnographic approaches, Nelsen weaves together robust data to explore what makes diverse impacts within the classrooms, especially within a big, urban public school system. Part of what is teased out in this research is the potential longevity of political socialization that transpires at an early age among students—this is a key dimension of citizenship, creating in individuals an understanding of their role and capacities within a democracy. The ability to teach about social movements, and political movements, and the individuals who were involved in these movements expands the concept of citizen participation in American politics and thus expands the notion of citizenship in general. This approach also moves beyond the “great man” narrative of history and helps students to think about how various people engage in politics, not just by running for elected office. Nelsen's work is important and useful as we continue to consider how citizens can and should participate in American politics and how the next generation is taught about citizenship, the American republic, and the idea of a complex democracy. This book may be acquired at Books and Books in Miami, Florida, at the Seminary Co-op Bookstore in Chicago, IL, and at Women & Children First Bookstore in Chicago, IL. Lilly J. Goren is a professor of political science at Carroll University, and co-host of the New Books in Political Science. She is co-editor of The Politics of the Marvel Cinematic Universe Volume I: The Infinity Sage and Volume II: Into the Multiverse (UP Kansas, 2022 & 2025), as well as co-editor of Women and the White House: Gender, Popular Culture, and Presidential Politics (UP Kentucky, 2012). CULTIVATING SAINTS, SAGES, AND STATESMEN THROUGH THE GREAT TRADITION OF CHRISTENDOMIn this long anticipated Part 2 (see Ep. 19 for Part 1), Catholic theologian and historian Dr. Alan Fimister defends this provocative assertion: the Church founded by Jesus Christ is Roman, in some mysterious sense prophesied in the Old, and fulfilled in the New Testament. The implications are astounding, not only in terms of how we understand the past, but the present, as well as the future history of the world. Part 2 focuses more on the fulfillment of these prophecies in the New Testament. A forthcoming Part 3 will focus on the "Roman" aspects of the end times (particularly the "restrainer" that holds back the coming of Antichrist). If you haven't yet seen Part 1, check out Ep. 19 here: https://youtu.be/_fR-Y8wd7O0Purchase Dr. Fimister's book, "The Iron Sceptre of the Son of Man: Romanitas as a Note of the Church" with an Eternal Christendom exclusive discount through Os Justi Press at our Bookstore (below).Dr. Fimister is a member of Eternal Christendom's Advisory Board:https://eternalchristendom.com/advisory-board/dr-alan-fimister/VISIT OUR WEBSITEhttps://eternalchristendom.com/BECOME A PATRON OF THE GREAT TRADITIONWe are a non-profit, and all gifts are tax-deductible. On September 10, 2025, conservative activist Charlie Kirk, founder of Turning Point USA, appeared to have been fatally shot in the neck during an event at Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah, allegedly by 22-year-old Tyler James Robinson. The shot, we are told, was fired from a rooftop 142 yards away. The public narrative — spread by the FBI, TPUSA, and the mainstream media — is riddled with dubious details: Robinson's unexplained hours on campus, multiple clothing changes, undetected rooftop assembly and firing, a 15-foot jump escape, ditching a reassembled rifle with his DNA, incriminating texts and notes (one destroyed), and surrender after a 33-hour manhunt facilitated by his parents and a Republican activist, yet no confession. Skeptics online have highlighted improbabilities like Robinson's lack of marksmanship expertise, a massive security stand down at the UVU event, missing CCTV footage, possible evidence tampering by Kirk's team, and odd security guard movements moments before the shot — all suggesting the possibility that things aren't quite as they are being portrayed by authorities. Joined by longtime friend of the podcast, Kit Klarenberg, we look at all that plus the evidence of Kirk's evolving politics in the months leading up to his demise, including recent criticisms of Israeli influence and Zionist donors, and we consider the extraordinary media-fueled political division that followed the as-yet unexplained events at UVU.To find out more about the people and music featured in today's episode, visit the Assassinations Podcast website, www.AssassinationsPodcast.com While there, you can check out our Bookstore, where we recommend some great episode-related reading material, or shop our Merch Store to nab a logo tee or tote bag. “Sometimes you need someone outside of your family and friends to tell you, ‘This part doesn't make sense,' or ‘Try it this way.' That honest feedback is what makes your writing stronger.” – Christine Devane Christine Devane spent 13 years as a second-grade teacher, where she fell in love with story time and noticed something missing on the shelves—books that spoke directly to shy children. Drawing from her own childhood experiences as a quiet kid, Christine set out to write Elephant Beach, a debut picture book that blends her love of reading, teaching, family, and her collection of lucky elephants. In this episode, Christine shares how her journey from the classroom to becoming a children's author unfolded—starting over a decade ago, taking her through critique groups and writing conferences, and eventually leading to publication in a wonderfully unexpected way. We talk about the importance of writing communities, the challenge of finding objective feedback, and the personal touch of including a red-haired main character, inspired by Christine's own childhood (and later reflected in her daughter). Key Takeaways: Filling a gap for shy kids: Christine saw that children's literature rarely centered shy personalities, inspiring her to write Elephant Beach. The long road to publication: She began the manuscript ten years ago, honing it through critique groups, conferences, and classes before it was finally picked up. The power of writing communities: Honest, constructive feedback from fellow writers gave her perspectives friends and family couldn't. Personal touches matter: Giving her main character red hair made the story authentic—and later mirrored in her own daughter. Persistence pays off: Even after stepping away from teaching and focusing on her family, the story found its way into the world. Murray's career spanned 70 years and over 40 publications. Sheppard is also the editor of a collection of letters between Caroline Ransom Williams, the first university-trained American Egyptologist, and James Breasted from the University of Chicago (Archaeopress, 2018). Sheppard's monograph, Tea on the Terrace, is about hotels in Egypt as sites of knowledge creation in Egyptology during the discipline's “Golden Age,” around 1880 to 1930.Women in the Valley of the Kings: The Untold Story of Women Egyptologists in the Gilded Age was published in July 2024. It has been reviewed in the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, and was a top 6 Reader's Choice non-fiction book on Goodreads.Dr. Colin Colbourn is the Lead Historian for Project Recover, where he manages historical operations to locate and identify U.S. service members missing in action from past conflicts. I've never shared this on the podcast before, but it's long overdue. I work with so many small business owners who've been burned by consultants and coaches—promised the world and left with disappointment. And honestly? It fires me up. No consultant should ever take advantage of a client's trust, especially when that client is trying to grow something meaningful. As business owners, we often hire help when we're stretched thin or searching for answers. We want to believe someone can step in and deliver results. But how do you know if you're hiring the right person? In this episode, I'm breaking down exactly what you should expect when working with a consultant: The red flags to watch for What a healthy consultant-client relationship looks like And how to track real progress once they're on board If you've ever hired a consultant—or you're thinking about it—this episode will give you the clarity you need to make smart, confident decisions. In this episode, we jump to our second campaign, a Call of Cthulhu based campaign called Lore for the Pages. In this episode, our heroes inherit both a bookstore and a home from KH Hillman, a bookseller who for years has been selling Cthulhu Mythos and occult books and objets d'arts by mail to unscrupulous buyers. Now, our heroes have to reclaim these lost objects before they are used to cause more problems. The first adventure is set in the fictional town of Sargasso Springs Alabama, a coastal town that is suffering from a strange infestation of bugs and some unusually cold weather. Our heroes get notified of their inheritance and begin the investigation of their new home while realizing neither the weather or the bugs are natural. As they dig deeper they begin to realize their new home maybe won't last long. Check it out!Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/family-plot--4670465/support.

Paul calls us to follow him to a life of service to the Lord Jesus Christ, a life that may, or may not, include hunger, thirst, nakedness, beatings and/or homelessness. How's that for an invitation to the Christian life? You can also add being reviled, persecution and defamation to the list as well. This is what real Christianity is, and if you're saved, it's what you are called to, like it or not. This Sunday Service message was preached live at the Bible Believers Church at the Bookstore in Palatka, Florida.“If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God. Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth. For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God.” Colossians 3:1-3 (KJB)

Send us a textStep into Philadelphia's only Spanish-English bookstore, where literature becomes a powerful bridge connecting communities and celebrating cultural heritage. The Julia de Burgos Bookstore, named after Puerto Rico's most celebrated poet, offers more than just books—it provides a sanctuary where Puerto Rican and Latinx voices take center stage.Lisa Moser, the bookstore's passionate manager, shares her journey from language enthusiast to literary curator. With a background in Spanish and theology, Lisa discovered what she calls "the dream job I didn't know existed" at Taller Puertorriqueño, a 50-year-old cultural center where the bookstore resides. This non-profit organization serves as a vibrant hub for Puerto Rican culture through after-school programs, art exhibitions, community events, and its unique bookstore. The emotional impact of representation resonates throughout our conversation. Lisa recounts how visitors sometimes tear up upon entering a space where every book reflects Puerto Rican or Latinx authorship—"these are the books I wish I had when I was a kid," one visitor shared. This poignant reaction underscores why children's books are their bestsellers, as parents seek to affirm their children's cultural identity from an early age.Beyond the carefully curated book selection focusing on BIPOC, queer, and women writers, the store showcases handcrafted items from local artists and Puerto Rican artisans. These exclusive partnerships make them one of the only U.S. locations selling certain Puerto Rican-made goods. Every purchase supports Taller Puertorriqueño's community programs, creating a virtuous cycle of cultural preservation and education.Philadelphia has the second-largest Puerto Rican population in the United States, giving the bookstore deep community roots. The bookstore collaborates with nearby schools (including one named after Julia de Burgos), hosts bilingual storytimes, and offers cultural tours. Lisa finds particular joy in making personalized recommendations, connecting visitors with books that reflect their unique experiences and interests.Discover how this literary haven honors Julia de Burgos' legacy of anti-colonialism, feminism, and cultural pride while building bridges between languages, generations, and communities. A pioneering Palestinian-American journalist whose reporting for Al Jazeera over 25 years gave global audiences a human perspective on life under Israeli occupation, Shireen Abu Akleh was known as “the voice of Palestine.” On May 11, 2022, while covering an Israeli military raid in Jenin, she was fatally shot despite wearing clearly marked press gear. Multiple investigations — by the UN, CNN, The Washington Post, and others — concluded that Israeli forces were responsible, contradicting initial Israeli claims. Independent groups argued she was deliberately targeted, though Israel maintains it was accidental and has refused to take accountability or cooperate with international investigations. Her killing was widely condemned as an attack on press freedom and a possible war crime, and her legacy endures as a symbol of Palestinian resilience and unflinching journalism in the face of military occupation. To find out more about the people and music featured in today's episode, visit the Assassinations Podcast website, www.AssassinationsPodcast.com While there, you can check out our Bookstore, where we recommend some great episode-related books and reading material, or shop our Merch Store to nab a logo tee or tote bag.
