Two hundred and thirty-one years ago this month, King Louis XVI of France lost his head. His execution by guillotine was a precursor of the Reign of Terror, a 10-month period from 1793 to 1794 when French Revolutionaries executed nearly 17,000 of their countrymen. Tens of thousands more died in prison or were murdered without a trial.  The French Revolution, one of history's most profound examples of the power of ideas, erupted out of the Enlightenment. In the mid-eighteenth century, philosophers such as Voltaire and Diderot effectively argued that human reason and scientific inquiry, rather than religion, were the true path to progress and greater freedom. Diderot's hostility to Christianity also spilled over into his views of the nobility. After all, if there were no God then King Louis could not have been “divinely appointed.” And if the king had no sacred claim to power, he had no right to live in outrageous luxury at Versailles while the French people were living in famine.   Some took these ideas further than others. In 1789, a few days before a mob stormed the Bastille prison in Paris, one of its longtime prisoners was transferred to a mental asylum. In his cell, he left a manuscript that would eventually be published under the title 120 Days of Sodom. The author was the infamous Marquis de Sade.  De Sade thought his novel to be the “most impure tale ever written.” It depicted graphic scenes of sexual violence, torture, and murder. It was also, to the utter horror of de Sade's contemporaries and modern historians, semi-autobiographical. De Sade spent most of his life in prison or mental asylums because of his crimes against vulnerable young women and men, and his name is the source of our modern word “sadism.”  More than an awful story, his book was a philosophical proposal. While Enlightenment philosophers such as Voltaire and Diderot denied the existence of God, they still defended many distinctly Christian virtues, including the goodness of self-sacrifice and the dignity of the poor. De Sade, on the other hand, did not share these philosophical inconsistencies. According to author and pastor Andrew Wilson in his book Remaking the World: How 1776 Created the Post-Christian West, de Sade simply had “no time” for Christian morality:  [De Sade] thought we should admit that there is no natural basis whatsoever for loving other people, forgiving them, or showing compassion. “The doctrine of loving one's neighbor is a fantasy that we owe to Christianity and not to Nature,” [de Sade] explained. Virtue, likewise, is “just a way of behaving that varies according to climate and consequently has nothing real about it.”   A century after de Sade, another philosopher described in stark clarity what a world without God would look like. In his “Parable of the Madman,” Friedrich Nietzsche described the death of God as “unchaining this earth from its sun.” In terms of personal morality, the Marquis de Sade got there first. Like Nietzsche, he was willing to explore the realities of his evil ideas in practice.   Though even the most radical sexual revolutionaries today would hesitate to claim de Sade as their intellectual forefather, they must. Before Darwin, he embraced a world where the strongest survive and most brutal thrive. Before the sexual revolution, he explored sex as only a means of pleasure with no regard for the dignity of people or their bodies. His disgusting depictions of torture foreshadowed the horrifying medical experiments that would be performed by the Nazis in the twentieth century. His open hatred for Christianity (he called Jesus “a scoundrel, a lecher, a showman who performed crude tricks”) anticipated an argument common today that Christianity is not only anti-intellectual and anti-rational, but plain evil.   For de Sade, freedom was pure license without the constraints or consequences of morality or even, for that matter, biology. This is only thinkable in a world without God, and therefore a world without any design or moral order. Those who argue for such a world have neither cause nor moral means by which to denounce the despicable behavior of de Sade or, for that matter, of Jeffrey Epstein and the men exposed when court documents were unsealed earlier this week.  Thankfully, despite the terrible ideas of the Enlightenment and their consequences, the world remains securely chained to its Sun. In the real world, the freedom to be fully human is grounded in the way God made us. Thus, true freedom is always hemmed in by virtue. Among the many benefits of this worldview is the ability to fiercely repudiate the degeneracy of the Marquis de Sade, and to do so from sound philosophical footing.  For more resources to live like a Christian in this cultural moment, go to breakpoint.org.

"A sadist and a masochist walk into a podcast, the masochist says 'hurt me', the sadist says 'no'" Our laughter at such a scene conveys our habitual association between violence and possession, De Sade and Sacher-Masoch, or to take them in their 20th century philosophical champions: Georges Bataille and Gilles Deleuze. How are Sadism and Masochism problems not only of psychology, but logical problems of philosophy and the limits of reason? How does the economy of each relation to one's self and the other pose not only ethical, but political and ecological problems for thought today? Adam, Craig, and Noah are joined by researcher Tiger Liu, who recently finished a graduate dissertation on Masochism, psychoanalysis,  and General Economy to discuss the legacies of this conjecture, and the new lines of flight that can be revealed in light of Sacher-Masoch and his legacy.Support the podcast:Linktree: https://linktr.ee/acidhorizonAcid Horizon on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/acidhorizonpodcastZer0 Books and Repeater Media Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/zer0repeaterMerch: http://www.crit-drip.comOrder 'The Philosopher's Tarot': https://repeaterbooks.com/product/the-philosophers-tarot/Subscribe to us on Apple Podcasts: https://tinyurl.com/169wvvhiHappy Hour at Hippel's (Adam's blog): https://happyhourathippels.wordpress.comRevolting Bodies (Will's Blog): https://revoltingbodies.comSplit Infinities (Craig's Substack): https://splitinfinities.substack.com/Music: https://sereptie.bandcamp.com/ and https://thecominginsurrection.bandcamp.com/Support the show

The Eric Metaxas Show John Zmirak  Apr 04 2023   John Zmirak of Stream.org starts the week with his reaction to President Trump's indictment. John Zmirak discusses his Stream.org article about demonic possession   https://stream.org/author/johnzmirak/   My Pronoun Is ‘Legion.' Satan and the Nashville Church Massacre stream.org/my-pronoun-is-legion-satan-and-the-nashville-church-massacre/ The Ruth Institute March 29, 2023 By John Zmirak Published on March 29, 2023 • John Zmirak In a powerful forthcoming commentary, Mark Judge refers to womanhood as “God's masterpiece.” There are countless ways in which this is true. We can most fruitfully consider them by thinking first about the Blessed Virgin, Jesus' mother. And then about our own mothers, sisters, daughters, and wives. Consider their courage, self-sacrifice, wisdom and compassion … the crosses they bear and blessings they bring. But I know Satan's masterpiece. That is, the thing he made to ape, attack, and pervert God's Creation, which he hates. As an arrogant, lofty spirit, he loathes our bodies. As a sexless, loveless rationalist, he's revolted by reproduction. As a metaphysical terrorist, he's addicted to rebellion. So the Enemy who strives to destroy us (as proxies for a God he cannot harm) fixes his steely gaze on our soft and vulnerable parts — our hearts and loins and wombs. To Make Us Little Satans I mostly don't mean that the Enemy tempts us to sins of the flesh. That's true, and it's quite serious. But as C.S. Lewis observed in The Screwtape Letters, the Accuser isn't satisfied just trying to damn people by luring them to have sex too soon or too randomly. That's rookie stuff for him, too easily repented. No, the goal instead is to comprehensively pervert, twist, and turn against God Himself the very structure of His creation. To turn us not just into disobedient children, but little demons ourselves — consumed as Satan is with loathing, revulsion and rebellion aimed at God's exquisite handiwork.   We see a strong streak of that in the works of the Marquis de Sade, the first pro-choice philosopher in history, and the father of the Sexual Revolution. His arguments were picked up by Jean-Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir, mainstreamed into Second Wave feminism, and repeated cluelessly by the likes of Ruth Bader Ginsburg. De Sade didn't favor mere sexual indulgence, but aggressive, violent perversion indulged in complete with blasphemy, incest, kidnapping, torture, and murder. It isn't straightforward Lust that drives a man to imagine priests defiling the Eucharist in the course of raping nuns. That takes a spirit not of this earth, which hates the place and everyone in it. Sade was not insane. He was possessed. After he died in squalid obscurity, the spirit in him moved on. It made sure that Sade's tedious, sickening works began to fascinate intellectuals, who quoted it and reprinted it, making it somehow respectable. (Why were two high-budget Hollywood movies made lionizing this aristocrat who tortured impoverished prostitutes?) That spirit planted the seeds in subsequent centuries for the worldview we now see in bloom, its flowers of evil bobbing outside our classrooms and our libraries. Bad Parents, Bring Us Your Kids to Groom! We saw it outside what used to be my favorite late night spot in Dallas, Buzzbrews Restaurant in Lakewood, some months ago. Under new ownership, the place started hosting “all ages” drag queen brunches. That means, in plain English: “Bad parents, come bring your kids to be groomed by men dressed as strippers and prostitutes!” Such fun for all. When Christians announced a plan to pray and sing outside, the organizers of the drag event invited … Antifa, to show up in masks wielding AR-15s, to terrorize the Christians. The message was clear. These activists hate us because they hate Creation and God, whom they hate because they're possessed. Love the Victims, Fight their Exploiters I absolutely don't mean to condemn the typical victims of Transgender madness, which is a mental illness morphed by ideology into a Gnostic grudge against God. The Stream has featured detailed, sympathetic stories of “de-transitioners,” of people whose emotional problems were misdiagnosed and mistreated by deluded or greedy doctors. To those people we owe only mercy, kindness, and welcome. As the Gettys put it in their exquisite song, “O Church Arise”: With shield of faith and belt of truth We'll stand against the devil's lies An army bold whose battle-cry is Love Reaching out to those in darkness Our call to war to love the captive soul But to rage against the captor And with the sword that makes the wounded whole We will fight with faith and valour But the high priests of this new cult of Cybele — the Mediterranean goddess who demanded self-castration — are servants of our Enemy. And that's how they see us. No wonder that we've endured the first act of violence aimed at Christians by Transgenderists, in the monstrous Nashville school shooting — unleashed just days after Tennessee passed a law protecting children from Transgender grooming. That's no coincidence, as we'd probably know for sure if the authorities ever released the testosterone-juiced transgender mass killer's “manifesto.” (Spoiler: They won't.) A “Mostly Peaceful” Trans Day of Vengeance It won't be the last attack. They've promised that. What else do you think it means when we're awaiting the Trans Day of Vengeance? Not The Bee reported on an eruption of calls by Trans activists for more violence against Christians. The courageous Terry Schilling called things out as they are: So Splendidly Satanic What makes Transgenderism so splendidly Satanic, so much more baroquely evil than homosexuality, abortion, or any of de Sade's other private hobbies? The answer isn't simple. Instead, it has many layers of skin, like some infernal onion or fast-shedding snake. First, this ideology pleases the Enemy because it targets children: bullied boys, autistic girls, the victims of molestation, these and others like them get herded by their teachers onto the castration conveyor belt, the fast track to steroid poisoning. The innocence, vulnerability, and helplessness of children has always attracted the most evil among us — such as the shooter in Tennessee, whose real name and fake pronouns I won't even mention. Let her memory be accursed. Please Support The Stream: Equipping Christians to Think Clearly About the Political, Economic, and Moral Issues of Our Day. Second, the Trans agenda weaponizes and perverts our sympathy for victims — which finds its highest expression in our tears for the suffering Christ. The main power move of the demon-driven Left in our time is Victimism, the manufacture of fake victims to be used as stalking horses and puppets in a quest for ever more power. We rightly feel terrible for anyone tormented by confusion over the most basic human reality imaginable — our nature as persons of either one sex or the other. As Al Perrotta noted, “Something called the Trans Resistance Network released a statement that basically turns [the] mass murderer … into a victim.” Once our eyes are clouded by tears, it's easy to manage the sleight of hand that grants the Transgenderist high priests the whip hand over society. If you criticize the doctors, clinics, and drug companies making billions by mutilating children, the high priests reach into their hats and pull out … some tormented soul whom we are allegedly driving to suicide. They really are black magicians. A Power Grab, Backed by Threats of Violence Finally, the Transgender cult aims at staggering power, and quickly reveals its nature as a pretext for mass bullying and abuse. Allegedly in order to prevent an unproven wave of suicides induced by “transphobia” we must meet each one of the following list of demands (which grows by the news cycle): Deny the importance and reality of biological sex. Women become “people who menstruate” or (as per some in Britain's NHS) “Front Hole People.” Roll that around in your head, as you think about your mom. Allow mentally ill or depravedly opportunistic boys to take over women's sports. Destroy women's privacy in restrooms and locker rooms. Subject women prisoners to male rapists wearing wigs. Force the entire population to speak differently, revising a basic part of speech, the pronoun. Fully fund the mutilation of children's bodies through government programs. Then offer the same to soldiers, even prisoners. Shame as “transphobic” haters normal, heterosexual people who won't pursue romances with crude, surgical simulacra who ape the opposite sex. Cancel and censor authors, speakers, thinkers who dissent from all this Satanic madness. Deprive parents of custody if they won't enable this butchery to be practiced on their kids. Transgenderism's high priests are thuggishly trying to dominate us all, as part of a lunatic scheme to deconsecrate nature, and obliterate humanity as God saw fit to make it. If there's any worldview more openly diabolical out in the world today, I don't want to know about it. I'm middling at prayer, and terrible at fasting. History of National Poetry Writing Month National Poetry Writing Month (also known as NaPoWriMo) is a creative writing project held annually in April in which participants attempt to write a poem each day for one month. NaPoWriMo coincides with National Poetry Month in the United States of America and Canada. This website is owned and operated by Maureen Thorson, a poet living in Washington, DC. Inspired by NaNoWriMo, National Novel Writing Month), she started writing a poem a day for the month of April back in 2003, posting the poems on her blog. When other people started writing poems for April and posting them on their own blogs, Maureen linked to them. After a few years, so many people were doing NaPoWriMo that Maureen decided to launch an independent website for the project. My History with National Poetry Writing Month I started writing poetry in 1988 after I had been exposed to T.S. Elliot in my honors English class in high school. In 1992 I started reading my poetry publicly at Espresso Europia Coffee Shop in Abilene Tx while I was in the United States Air Force. While living in Rockford Illinois I published my first book of poetry Throwing Yourself at the Ground and Missing in 2007 followed by Postcards From Someone You Don't Know in 2008 Wisdom From the Sack in 2010 and Shaving Crop Circles In My Chest Hair in 2017. You can get copies of all of these books in my merch section. In 2020 I started publishing my podcast version of the challenge and those can be viewed here for 2020 and here for 2021. What I am doing differently for Poetry Month For 2023 I am not going to be just writing poems in April, I will be writing poems all year round. Also, since I will be writing all year round, I am using a different source for my prompts. There is a blog called Think Written and you can find it here. I will also be performing these works at Katora Coffee House here in Fredericksburg Virginia on their Friday Night Snaps Open Mic Poetry reading. Some of the podcast episodes you will hear will be a live recording of me reading the poem to a live audience, other times I will be reading it in the comfort of my home studio. I do plan on posting my work to the NaPoWriMo site and interacting with the poets there and see if they want to read their work on this podcast. Todays Poetry Prompt Life Didn't Go As Planned: Write about a recent or memorable experience when nothing went according to plan.  Todays Poem The Last Time I Cried  14 March 2023    It wasn't too cold that day  My car was starting, sporadically  It was a Friday, and I was forgotten in the waiting room  The nurse had me type in my information  She was unable to hold a thought for more than five minutes  Then back to the waiting room of forgetting  The resident came in  Way younger than me  Way more handsome,   Probably was having a threesome that night  He wanted to get out of there  I wanted to get out of there  Friday at 4 PM, both of our minds were elsewhere  He brought in his teacher, the real doctor  His accent was probably not as thick as I perceived   Between the nurse, the resident and this doc  I am surprised any of them hadn't been sued or assaulted  And that's when they told me  Welcome to the world of MS  And they ushered me out  The receptionist had left an hour ago  So, the head nurse practitioner had to check me out  He was the only one with an ounce of kindness  I made it through the hospital in downtown Richmond  I had been here before  Had the ticking timebomb removed from my brain  And I remembered how shitty I was treated back then  And I wondered why I came back  Oh yeah, I'm a De Sade fan  The car didn't start.   I lit a cigarette  The car didn't start  I am not sure why I thought it would  I walked around the car  Smoking another cigarette  Underneath the sign that says don't  Just as I was about to call home  The car started  Driving up I95 on a Friday before Spring Break  There was a lot to time to contemplate  Making my way home  I said no, No, NO  5 years of frustration  5 years of MRI's MRA's, CT Scans  Spikes pressed 5 times in my back  Blood tests galore for every known disease  Finally understanding why so many things happened  Finally realizing that I was never lazy  Finally realizing that what was wrong had a name  It wasn't me all along  Making it through the front door  The children were asleep  The wife was on the couch  I knew we would be there for awhile  Talked till her yawns couldn't keep her eyes opened  And then we slept  Saturday with the children didn't cause the waterworks  It was when my wife got back from errands  That it all hit me  And my kids wonder why Papa doesn't cry  They've never seen it  And I know it's bad to think, but they may never  Even then I couldn't weep for myself in front of them  Retiring to our room  As she followed close by  I made it in, shut the door  And heard my dead mothers voice calling me selfish  And selfishly I cried  Reaching Out To The Podcast To reach out to me, email timothy@createartpodcast.com I would love to hear about your journey and what you are working on. Todays Poetry Prompt Stranger Conversations: Start the first line of your poem with a word or phrase from a recent passing conversation between you and someone you don't know.   Todays Poem The Insufficiency of Your Love  10 March 2023  The insufficiency of your love  Could have kept me alive longer  Raise your hand as high as you can  Now raise it higher  What the hell is that?  That is the insufficiency of your love  If you could have taken a moment  And thought about someone outside of your brain  Maybe just maybe you would have picked me  But you chose the most athletic kids to play ball with  Reminding me that although being last picked by you  Because no one else would pick me at all  Was what I should expect  When you taught me the meaning of trophy family  Without saying a word,  I embraced the role of being an embarrassment   I delved into the depths of De Sade and other of that denizen  Knowing I was stabbing your heart  Until I declared you dead to me  Your love and acceptance   Is no longer required or desired  Yes, that is my blood on that knife  The same one your silent partner chased me around the house with  Yes, these cuts are in cursive   So, I can remember them and lie to my children   Who can read what I wrote  I hear remnants of your voice in mine  Sometimes I just want to rip out my throat  And silence both of us  Sometimes when I look at this husk  I see a foggy glimpse of you  And smash my face against the mirror  The insufficiency of your love wasn't what killed me off  That was all my doing  I wouldn't give you the pleasure of thinking  That what you did caused this decision  I took myself out of the picture years ago  Ensuring whatever influenced your existence  Never saw the light of day again  It was easy, quick, and not a tear was shed  And when it was done  I put on my new skin  Replaced the diseased innards  Promptly forgot where I came from  And set my compass for elsewhere  Reaching Out To The Podcast To reach out to me, email timothy@createartpodcast.com I would love to hear about your journey and what you are working on.
