Al Fadi and Brother Mel continue their talk about the connection between Islam and the Zoroastrian religion of Persia. Today they talk about the myth of the Buraq; which Muslims believe it is a flying horse, which took Mohammad to Jerusalem to Al Aqsa mosque and then to heaven. The origin of the name is Persian which means : A riding animal, a rider or a horse. In Zoroastrianism a demon god rides on a horse. This shows the willingness of Islam to copy other religions. They also touch on the origin of the names Aisha and Fatima. They think that they are Jewish names of two wives of Ishmael according to the Jewish Tergum. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/gumilarmalau/support

I want to share an intriguing perspective on the Temple Mount in Jerusalem, an area of immense historical and religious significance. As believers, our understanding of history, scriptures, and archaeology can shape our faith in profound ways. I propose that the Temple was never located where the Dome of the Rock now stands. Instead, I suggest that the 36-acre area known as the Temple Mount was, in fact, the site of the Roman Fortress Antonia. This idea might seem radical at first, but let's journey together through the historical and scriptural evidence. Imagine, for a moment, the Western Wall in Jerusalem. Thousands of people approach this wall each day, praying fervently, their hopes and dreams folded into small pieces of paper tucked into the cracks between the stones. Many believe these stones embody the presence of God - that they are the remnants of the Temple's foundation walls. The religious significance of the Temple Mount isn't exclusive to Jewish tradition. Islam, too, regards this site as the third holiest in the faith, following Mecca and Medina. Muslims believe that the prophet Muhammad ascended to heaven from this location on a horse named Buraq. As we unravel this narrative, let's ask ourselves: Is the traditional Temple Mount truly the correct location of the Temple? The Gospel of Matthew (24:1-2) records a prophecy made by Jesus concerning the Temple: "Do you see all these things? Truly I tell you, not one stone here will be left on another; every one will be thrown down." Yet, the Western Wall, believed to be a part of the Temple, still stands in contradiction to Jesus's prophecy. Moreover, when the Temple was destroyed in 70 AD, the historian Josephus claimed that it was so thoroughly razed that no one would have known a Temple was ever there. This biblical prophecy and historical account align with the words of the minor prophet Micah (Micah 3:12), who prophesied that Zion would be plowed like a field. If we look closely at an old map of Jerusalem, we can spot an intriguing detail. The City of David lies 600 feet south of the Temple Mount. Within the boundaries of the City of David, you can clearly see terraced fields, fulfilling Micah's prophecy - but there are no such fields on the Temple Mount. Furthermore, the Roman historian Josephus described the tower of Antonia, the Roman fort in Jerusalem, as appearing to be comprised of several cities. During the Roman occupation, around 6,000 soldiers and an additional 4,000 support personnel were stationed in Jerusalem. The fort, therefore, needed to be large enough to accommodate all these people, with sufficient space for their daily activities, including barracks, officers' quarters, courthouses, and stables. Interestingly, the size of a standard Roman fort aligns with the dimensions of the Temple Mount. So where, then, was the Temple? If we further examine the historical records and writings of scholars like Eusebius, the Temple's location was nearly in the very center of the City of David. Within the heart of the City of David lies the Gihon Springs, a source of living water necessary for the priests to perform their religious duties. Scripture repeatedly highlights Zion as the site of the Lord's dwelling place. Psalm 20:2 implores, "May He send you help from the sanctuary, and strengthen you out of Zion." In Psalm 65:1-4, the psalmist writes, "Praise awaits you, O God, in Zion... we shall be satisfied with the goodness of Your house, of Your holy temple." The City of David, or Zion, was strategically located and coveted for its supply of water, at the junction of key trade routes. It was a natural fortress, like a stationary battleship in the heart of Judea. When David captured it, it was known as the Jebusite fortress; he renamed it the City of David and made it the dwelling place of God.  As believers, let us continuously seek God's truth, always ready to question, learn, and grow in our understanding of our faith, its history, and its foundations.

On Sunday 17 April I took the bus from Beit Safafa to the old city to join a tour in Silwan with Emek Shaveh, an Israeli NGO that, in their own words, works  to defend cultural heritage rights and to protect ancient sites as public assets that belong to members of all communities, faiths and peoples. That day was Easter Sunday for the Catholic Church, Pesach for the Jews and Ramadan for the Muslims. As we walked up to Mount Zion we saw a lot of police blockades, police everywhere and Jewish people walking towards the plaza in front of the Buraq wall. We heard helicopters flying over and we realized it was a tense day to go on a tour in Silwan. During the tour we heard shooting several times.Silwan is a Palestinian village close to the old city. Silwan is the place where the city of Jerusalem started in the Canaanite period, in the Bronze Age time. This is where the first small settlement was established near the Gihon spring. Today there is a big archaeological site and a lot of excavations are happening in Silwan. With archaeologist and founder of Emek Shaveh, Yonathan Mizrachi, we walked around the visitor center and the excavations and other parts of Silwan, to talk about how archaeology is used to make claims of ownership and to create a justification for taking over the Palestinian area of Silwan. There are two settler organizations active in Silwan: Elad and Ateret Cohanim. They use different methods to take over houses from Palestinians and create Jewish presence in the neighborhood. In this episode you can hear from archaeologist Yonathan Mizrachi that there is no evidence that the palace of King David was built in this area. They have not found anything from the 10th century, the time of King David, although the site is called 'City of David' archaeological park. Steve Bug is one of electronic music's true originals. His relentless commitment to quality - both in his own work and in the many producers he has championed - has made him one of the world's most revered artists and curators, and along with his label Poker Flat has made a sizeable contribution to building the European house and techno scene as we know it. A dedicated, energetic and constantly innovative talent, Resident Advisor once called Steve Bug the “gentleman of techno” referring to his sense of duty and dependability as one of the world's most renowned DJs and producers. That same professionalism that means he's hardly ever missed a DJ gig is evident in his work as a composer, producer and owner of the Poker Flat Recordings label: a label whose influence on house and techno cannot be overstated. Every step he takes is well considered, but always tempered with his own fine sense of humour and innate love for his craft. Having grown up in Germany's techno and acid-house heyday, Steve Bug's love for a perfect groove is as apparent now as it was back then. His DJ skills and a keen, innovative ear led him not down the typical path of the early nineties trance and harder dance scene, but instead towards a fresher, hybrid sound–merging stripped deep house, tweaked out acid and more minimal forms of techno and electronic music. Although dedicated to his own labels – first and foremost the aforementioned Poker Flat – Steve's talents have naturally attracted the attention of other imprints. Bedrock, Knee Deep In Sound, Minus, Cocoon and Defected are just some of the labels that have championed original tracks and remixes.  Steve is also one of the few electronic artists capable of putting out a ‘proper' album. Having released no fewer than five full length LPs over the last two decades, his latest Paradise Sold alongside Langenberg - a full ten-track album of exquisitely crafted house music on Poker Flat –was released in 2018 to critical acclaim, and described as “elegantly euphoric” by Mixmag, while a remix package of Paradise Sold with new interpretations from Rodriguez Jr., Frankey & Sandrino, Cassy and Virginia was supported by DJs and tastemaker publications across the board.   In 2019 Poker Flat celebrated its 20th anniversary, marking this impressive milestone with a series of remixes of some of its most iconic releases from an incredible array of talented artists including Tim Engelhardt, Michael Meyer, Catz 'n Dogz, Acid Pauli, Guti, Butch, Matthias Kaden and Francois K. The anniversary remix series continues into 2020, with Harry Romero, Catz N Dogz and Acid Pauli amongst the producers given the keys to the hallowed Poker Flat vaults.  2019 also saw the launch of a new sublabel for Poker Flat, Sublease Music. Sublease was set up to champion deeper, more club-ready, tracky cuts from exceptionally talented producers that deserve a platform for people to hear them. This was the ethos with which Steve originally set up Poker Flat, so it seems fitting that as he celebrates 20 years of Poker Flat it's time for Sublease Music to bring a different sound to the world. Hitting its seventh release in summer 2020, Sublease has already made its mark, with exceptional releases from Kellie Allen, MANIK, Buraq and more besides.  In 2020 Steve released his sixth studio album, Never Ending Winding Roads, with much of it produced during the months of enforced isolation due to the coronavirus pandemic. Many of the track titles reflect Steve's headspace during this time, with themes of solitude, contemplation and reflection brought to the fore perhaps more than with any of his previous work, with the 11 tracks exploring a range of different styles, including minimal house music, moody techno and effervescent breaks.

Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem had not yet been built when this verse is supposed to have been revealed to Muhammad. According to Islamic tradition, he died in 632, while al-Aqsa Mosque was built in 705. Either the Qur'an passage refers to a different “farthest mosque,” or the passage itself was written long after Muhammad is supposed to have died, or both. In any case, the standard interpretation of the Qur'anic passage, that it refers to Muhammad's Night Journey to Jerusalem on a winged white horse, al-Buraq, is clearly false, and that whole story is legendary, despite the fact that it is the basis for the Islamic claim to Jerusalem as a holy city for Muslims. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/yaar-ben-emmett/support

Episode 47 Season 2 Holidays and Festivals Holidays are very confusing in this part of the world. Not only are there secular, Jewish, Christian, and Islamic holidays, but the dates they fall on are related to the Hebrew calendar, the solar Gregorian Calendar,  plus a sighting of the new moon at Mecca. And not only that, but various Christian denominations celebrate key events on different days. Jewish festivals The Jewish calendar is both lunar and solar. It follows the sun for the year and the moon for the month. Every three years is a leap year, and one month is added to keep the feasts and festivals as close as possible to the seasons as in Scriptures. The Sabbath is very important to the Jewish people and life in Israel in general. In most places around the country and especially in Jerusalem, Friday afternoon to Saturday evening, everything shuts down, including transportation. And In Jewish tradition, the day begins at sunset. We will talk about the first  Festival: Rosh Hashanah: The Jewish New Year / Feast of Trumpets – Trumpets are blown to remind people to repent of their sins as the Day of Atonement is approaching. Though a solemn holiday, it is celebrated with apples and honey for a “prosperous and sweet” new year. Yom Kippur: The Day of Atonement – Holiest day of the year for the Jewish People and a national day of fasting. This tradition goes back to Biblical times of the Tabernacle, where once a year on Yom Kippur, the High Priest entered the Holy of Holies to atone for the people's sins. Sukkot: The Feast of Tabernacles – A weeklong holiday that comes five days after Yom Kippur. It celebrates the gathering of the harvest and commemorates God's protection and provision for the Israelites after they left Egypt. The festival of Sukkot is one of the three pilgrimage feasts and is celebrated by dwelling in a foliage-covered booth (sukkah) and by waving four species of plants – palm, myrtle, willow, and citron. Simchat Torah: The Rejoicing of the Law – a joyous celebration that marks the end and beginning of the cycle of public Torah readings. Hanukkah: Feast of Lights – An eight-day Jewish celebration of the Maccabees' victory over the Greeks in 165 BC. To remember the miraculous provision of oil for the light in the temple, Hanukkah is celebrated by daily lighting a new candle on a Hanukkiah (9-branched Menorah) and eating food deep-fried in oil, such as the sufganiyot (jelly doughnuts). Purim: The Festival of Lots – Celebrates the bravery of a Jewish girl who became queen and saved her people, the Jews, in ancient Persia. This bizarre holiday is celebrated by fancy dress-ups (to allude to the hidden features in the story), much feasting, and loud, interactive reading of the Book of Esther in the synagogues. Pessah: Passover – Commemorates God's Deliverance of Israel out  of Egypt. A perfect lamb was slain, and its blood was painted on the doorposts, all so that the punishment of the Lord will “pass over” the homes of the children of Israel. The event is celebrated with a special family meal called the Seder by which the story is told. Another Passover tradition is cleaning the house from any yeast, and bread is replaced with a cracker called Matzah. Passover is one of the three pilgrimage feasts. Shavuot: Festival of Weeks / Pentecost – it is celebrated 50 days after Passover as the day in which God gave the Torah to Moses on Mount Sinai. Shavuot is one of the three pilgrimage feasts. Today, it is customary to stay up all night reading the Torah. Lag B'Omer: The 33rd day of the Omer – the Omer is the 49 days between Passover (Pessach) and Pentecost (Shavuot). The holiday celebrates a break in the dreadful plague at the time of Rabbi Akiva. Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai (Rashbi, an important Jewish mystic) is also said to have died on that day, which in Jewish tradition means his life purpose was fulfilled and, therefore, a day of joy. Lag B'Omer is celebrated by building bonfires, playing sports, and enjoying picnics. Tisha B'av: the Ninth of Av (Hebrew month) – is an annual fast day of communal mourning over a number of disasters in Jewish history, primarily the destruction of the First and Second Temples in Jerusalem. Israeli Secular Holidays Yom Hashoah: (Holocaust Memorial) National remembrance day for the tragedy of the Holocaust in which 6 million Jews were murdered. Yom Hazikaron: (Remembrance Day) National remembrance day for all the soldiers who lost their lives defending the State of Israel. A siren is sounded, and all Israeli citizens stop what they are doing and stand firm in silence to honor the lives lost. Yom Haatzmaut: (Independence Day) The day of Israel, a celebration of the Declaration of the State of Israel on the 14th of May 1948. The celebration day changes each year as it follows the Hebrew calendar (in this case, the 5th of Iyar), and it is always preceded by the Day of Remembrance for the fallen soldiers. Yom Yerushalayim: (Jerusalem Day) commemoration of the reunification of Jerusalem after the Six-Day War in 1967. Christian Feasts These Festivals are celebrated on different dates by Eastern Orthodox and western churches (Latin, Roman Catholic, and Protestant, etc.). For Christians, Sunday is a special holy day, and so, many Christians do not work on Sundays as they would be with their families at church. (Touristic places are generally still open though). Christmas: 25th of December or 7th of January. With Christianity being a minority, it is less common to find Christmas symbols around Israel than in many other countries. However, major religious centers such as Nazareth, Bethlehem, and the Old City of Jerusalem experience festivities that bring the story of the Nativity to life! Lighting up the Christmas tree in different towns, Christmas markets, concerts, plays and more, Christmas in the Holy Land is like you have never seen it before! Lent: 40 days of fasting observed by many churches in preparation for Easter. It begins on Ash Wednesday, a holy day for prayer and fasting for repentance and ends the day before Easter Sunday. The number 40 is related to Jesus fasting in the desert for 40 days. Palm Sunday: Palm Sunday marks the beginning of the Holy Week and celebrates the arrival of Jesus in Jerusalem. Today, Palm Sunday is celebrated with a procession in the footsteps of Jesus from Mount of Olives and through the Old City. Families from many denominations join in with their best attire and wave palm branches (or crosses made from palm leaves) on this joyful event led by marching bands. Palm Sunday and Easter are not only movable days but multiple in this region – the day in some years may be Palm Sunday for some people and Easter Sunday for others. Good Friday: the day Jesus was crucified, it is commemorated by some churches by following in his footsteps from Gethsemane to Golgotha to be crucified. Thousands of pilgrims follow the path called Via Dolorosa (“Way of the Pain”) while holding crosses. Holy Saturday: crowds gather at the Holy Sepulchre church to witness the miracle of the Holy Fire being lit, and the light is distributed to all and sent all over the world to light the churches for the next year. Easter Sunday: The Tomb is empty and the Savior is risen! Easter, also known as Pascha, is celebrated all over Israel with the highlight being in Jerusalem. It is celebrated with family visits, egg hunts, and church services, but the highlight for Protestants is the sunrise service at the Garden Tomb. Eastern and Western churches usually celebrate on different days, yet it has happened where they coincide on the same day. Easter and the Jewish Passover often overlap as well as Jesus' death and resurrection occurred during Passover. Muslim Holidays The Islamic calendar began on the 16th July 622 AD, the date of the Hijra, and follows a lunar calendar. For Muslims, Friday is the holiest day, and so many local areas with generally Muslim population close down on Fridays. Ras Elsana al Hijriya: (The Hijri New Year / Islamic New Year) – The years in Islam started counting in 622 AD on the day Muhammad and his followers emigrated from Mecca to Medina – known as the Hijra. The Hijri calendar is a lunar calendar with 354/355 days a year and consists of 12 months. Mawlid al Nabi: (Birth of the Prophet) – Commemorates the birth of Prophet Muhammad and is celebrated in a carnival manner with large street processions and reading the stories of Muhammad's life. Lailat al Miraj: One of the most significant events in the Muslim calendar. This festival celebrates the night journey and ascent of prophet Muhammad. According to Muslim tradition, Muhammad was taken from Mecca to Jerusalem on a mythical winged creature called Buraq, and from there, he ascends to heaven where he is validated as the last and final prophet. Ramadan: The ninth month of the Islamic calendar and observed by Muslims worldwide as the month of fasting. It is remembered as the month in which the Quran was given to Muhammad. According to Muslims, during Ramadan, the gates of heaven are opened, and gates of Hell are closed. As one of the Five Pillars of Islam, all Muslims fast from sunrise to sunset and celebrate with feasts each night during this month. Eid Al Fitr: (Festival of Breaking Fast) – Just as its name implies, it celebrates the end of the Ramadan fast with three days of festivities. Eid El-Adha: (Festival of Sacrifice) – This festival celebrates Abraham's willingness to sacrifice his son, Ishmael. It is celebrated with gatherings and feasts, and it is customary to eat an abundance of meat during these three days. Eid Al Adha coincides with the completion of the Hajj – the annual pilgrimage to Mecca.

"Singing A Shining Steed: The Mystical Origins of the Buraq" by Jessika Kenney

In this unique speech, Khateebah & Mu'adthinah Jessika Kenney delves into the many different understandings of the buraq, or shining steed, that the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) rode on his Night Journey. She explores the more mystical and folklorish renditions of the buraq as a winged animal with a woman's head, to the more metaphysical and scientific theories of the buraq as electricity or light. At the end of her speech, Jessika treats us with an interactive singing performance in which she invites the audience to participate in chanting beautiful poetry in the background as she sings the main verses. // On the evening of May 10, 2019, The Women's Mosque of America held its fifth annual co-ed iftar & qiyam during the holy month of Ramadan, featuring all women speakers and a chance for the greater public to benefit from the spiritual insights of its Muslim women leaders. Bio: Jessika Kenney is a vocalist, composer/improviser, and teacher. Jessika's singing can be heard on Ideologic Organ, Black Truffle, Weyrd Son, SIGE, Present Sounds, and other labels. She performs regularly with writers/scholars Red Pine (Bill Porter), Fatemeh Keshavarz, and Anne Carson. At international festivals, Jessika has performed her own compositions as well as music of Annea Lockwood, Hossein Omoumi, Morton Feldman, Giacinto Scelsi, and others. In 2015, her LP “ATRIA” (based on writings attributed to Sunan Kalijaga, who brought Islam to Java in the 15th century CE) was released alongside a sound, calligraphic score, sculpture, and video installation filling five rooms at the Frye Art Museum in Seattle. Jessika taught from 2007-2015 at her alma mater, Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle. She has studied sindhenan with many great musicians of Javanese gamelan in and outside Indonesia, particularly the late, great pesindhen Nyi Supadmi (d. 2015). She has studied Persian radifs with Ostad Hossein Omoumi (UC Irvine) since 2004. Kenney received the 2014 James Ray Distinguished Artist Award, and for collaborations with her husband Eyvind Kang, the 2015 Stranger Genius Award. She is VoiceArts faculty at California Institute of the Arts and lives in Pasadena, CA. In 1997, Jessika had her first masjid experience in the Kauman neighborhood of Surakarta, Central Java, and she has been involved in Islamic and Sufi culture ever since.

Nocturnes 3.0   Third and most probably last instalment of the Nocturnes series. Keeping up with the nightly vibe with some cheeky edits and my first original mash-up with “It’s You I Touch”. If you feel like having a laugh scroll to 58:46.. The added sample is priceless.. Best way I can describe the final set is as an attempt to blend Deep with Progressive house with a NYC undercurrent vibe. Nocturnes 3.0 fits snuggly in the series and I believe it is a tidy way to wrap it up.   Playlist: 2013 It’s You I Touch [Xtian Mash-Up Original Mix vs Soda Panorama Bar]. Andrew Herbertson 2012 Spectra (Madloch, Yunta & Beat Syndrome Remix). Mauro Norti and Travis MacDonald feat. Ashley Benjamin 2013 Moon (Original Mix). HVOB   Highlights Bar “Cooler Couleur », which is the only weak track and here because of the french accent sample, all tracks in the playlist are worth running to Beatport and Traxsource and paying for the original versions. “It’s You I Touch” is my first real attempt at a mash-up. "Touch" by Buraq & Patrick Podage vs. "It’s You" by FCL. I hope someone with real talent will pick up what is a good idea and make it great… Because those 2 tracks are begging for it. ”Leaves Falling” progressive trancy track with a Balearic tinge. It reminds me of early Chicane and Café del mar. “Sky in Your Eyes” you will recognize the main pads line and it will take you back! “Going Crazy” and “Start Again”, two solid tunes, with great male vocals and perfection of a bass line.. “No Eyes” from Claptone, with “Follow The Step”, the real gem of the set. I love the bass line, the production is beyond reproach, deep, sexy, progressive… Into “Follow The Step”, which was the discovery of the Miami Winter Music Conference (WMC), I am not sure I am giving the tune the credit it deserves and I will came back to it further down the road. Fairly satisfied with my 2 edits of “Black Room Boy” and “Let’s Play” giving them the NYC remix treatment with a Kev Cruz sample I hope put to good use. “All Cats Are Grey”, if you are an adult check the tune (starting at 58:46) you will have a laugh.. I stumbled on the Ed Weather sample a few months ago.. Priceless.. Finishing with "Spectra" and "Moon", 2 fantastic progressive gems... I may start the following progressive mix with "Spectra" to give the tune a bit more exposure. Not quite sure where I will go next, most probably soulful or if I have the time I will prepare an edit set for some freinds of mine dropping in over the weekend.. We shall see. In the meantime.. Enjoy Xtian
