We have one helluva guest for you this week! Jann Arden, Caitlin Green and Sarah Burke welcome television host and best-selling author Mary Jo Eustace. Jann and MJ begin with their origin story, the evolution of their careers, and the challenges and triumphs of aging. They discuss the impact of personal experiences in the public eye, like divorce and public scrutiny, and how they have transformed pain into empowerment. They also discuss the pursuit of purpose in the later stages of life, the excitement of participating in reality TV, the importance of connection and empathy, and the complexities of modern dating. More About Mary Jo Eustace: Mary Jo Eustace is an award winning TV host, a best-selling author and trained chef, who has cooked her way through 800 episodes of lifestyle programming in the US and Canada. Tabloid fodder for two decades via a high profile divorce, she has utilized her notoriety globally to create multiple platforms for personal empowerment. Her podcast Senior Bitches charts internationally, highlighting women over 55 who are changing the landscape around conventional aging. A fierce advocate of anti-agism, Mary Jo roams the planet, connecting with connectors, celebrities and characters who share their secrets to a life well lived. Her new show Day Trippin for PBS will commence filming in early 2025. MJ became a household name in Canada in the late '90s when hosting more than 600 episodes of the cult TV cooking show What's for Dinner with her co-host, the late Ken Kostick. Later entangled in a tabloid tempest — with her then-husband Dean McDermott and Tori Spelling — she managed to always keep her humour intact and strip-mined her misery for others' benefit in the funny, poignant survival guide, Divorce Sucks: What to Do When Irreconcilable Differences, Lawyer Fees, and Your Ex's Hollywood Wife Make You Miserable. MJ is funny and candid about her own fears (and joys) of getting older, and will offer a no-holds-barred look at embracing the next chapter with honesty, humor, and a healthy dose of self-discovery. As a television host, author, and podcast personality, she has discussed topics like divorce, single parenting, and reinvention, resonating with audiences by offering a mix of wit, honesty, and resilience in navigating tough moments. Her openness about her journey has made her a voice of empowerment for those facing similar struggles. In 2012, the University of Miami philosopher Colin McGinn was accused of sexual harassment by a graduate student. When the matter became public, Pinker wrote in an open letter that McGinn was a “brilliant and distinguished scholar” and that if the University of Miami pursued disciplinary action against McGinn for “exchanging sexual banter with a graduate student,” it would “put a chill on communication between faculty and graduate students and on the openness and informality on which scholarship depends.” In our conversation, Pinker often brings up “The Blank Slate: The Modern Denial of Human Nature,” which, even two decades after its release, illustrates core aspects of his thinking today. The book argues that our individual behaviors — our intelligence, our sociability, our tendencies toward violence — are rooted in our genes, not just the environment in which we are raised. “.. in 2006 Pinker published a favorable review of a scientific paper which argued that Ashkenazi Jews may have evolved to have higher IQs than other racial and ethnic groups.” One of the first academics to be canceled, Pinker says, was E. O. Wilson. Wilson was a biologist and professor of evolutionary biology at Harvard. Today, he is known for two things: his award-winning work on biodiversity and his public branding as a racist. In 1975, Wilson published a book called “Sociobiology: The New Synthesis,” which argues that behaviors result from genes — “very much in the strain of work that I wrote about on human nature,” Pinker says — and stepped into a debate about scientific racism. In his book, Wilson writes that there should be a “discipline of anthropological genetics” to explore whether cultural differences are biological. https://www.thecrimson.com/article/2022/10/27/steven-pinker-scrut/ Pinker currently serves on the E. In this episode, Jann Arden, Caitlin Green and Sarah Burke speak to Lori Dyan, also known as Tarot Lori, a tarot card reader with 35 years of experience. They discuss the origins of Lori's interest in tarot, the misconceptions surrounding tarot reading, the popularity of moon rituals and the upcoming release of Lori's book, 'Burn Your Sh*t: The Life-Changing Magic of Rituals.' The conversation concludes with a tarot card reading for each of the hosts. This week's episode is brought to you by the home and auto insurance brand Canadians trust most—Intact Insurance. A note from Lori on her upcoming book: Rituals are routines infused with loving intention. The empowerment and unburdening they provide is immense and undeniable. Whether you're releasing something (or someone) with a Full Moon ritual, elevating your morning skincare routine with a ceremony of self-love or celebrating a milestone moment, rituals can enrich—and even transform—your life. Burn Your Sh*t guides readers to discover what is possible (and the work that needs to be done) with rituals to help them step into their potential and make their own magic. Full Moons are an opportunity to let go of limiting beliefs, negative self-talk or any other bad mojo that's hanging around. Crystals can promote healing and boost manifesting. Sacred geometry offers ancient wisdom to amplify ambitions. Sleeping on top of intentions can turn your life around. You can easily customize rituals to meet you where you're at in any given moment—from fuelling your body to finding your soulmate. Talk the Talk - a podcast about linguistics, the science of language.
How do we make the discipline of linguistics — and our world — a more just, diverse, and equitable place? Why does our personal history and personal perspective matter when doing science? How do we build community? And what happens if we do nothing? This episode is really kind of a mini-conference. We found some new work from linguists we admire, so we put out the word to our patrons and piled into a room! We're hearing work from Dr Aris Clemons, Dr Caitlin Green, and Dr Rikker Dockum on this episode.
Episode 1 of Sunshiny! In this episode, you meet Caitlin Green and hear stories listeners wrote in about the kindest thing someone has ever done for them!
We've made it to episode 5 of the Polite Conversations Aftershow! This is where you get to hear behind the scenes content of everything and anything to do with Polite Conversations/Woking Up/Twitter Spaces …with guests that are exclusively patrons of the show! Joining me for this one, is Linguist Dr. Caitlin Green. (@caitlinmoriah) We had a lot of laughs discussing recent anti-woke-sphere absurdities, hypocrisies and outrages. Roald Dahl, Oompa Loompas, ‘corporate wokeness', trad wives & much, much more! We chat about Pinker's use of the phrase ‘Primitive Word Magic', about Scott Adams and his recent racist outburst … We also discussed Jordan Peterson's attempt at poetry, and that was as fun as you're imagining it to be. —————————————————— Links & References: Jokes about Conor Friedersdorf are referencing this tweet: https://twitter.com/caitlinmoriah/status/1629883194542817282?s=61&t=w7q_ejvwZ_gCFj9WV50Lqw Catch our previous episode here: Linguistics of Slurs https://podcasts.google.com?feed=aHR0cHM6Ly9mZWVkcy5zb3VuZGNsb3VkLmNvbS91c2Vycy9zb3VuZGNsb3VkOnVzZXJzOjIwNjczMjAxMS9zb3VuZHMucnNz&episode=dGFnOnNvdW5kY2xvdWQsMjAxMDp0cmFja3MvMTA1ODI3MDQzMQ%3D%3D You can try this link for our twitter Space that Caitlin mentioned, but twitter is very spotty these days and sometimes the link works, other times it does not.
