Few shows had quite the same reach and impact in the 1990s as The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. The NBC series catapulted Will Smith into movie stardom, and it remains infinitely memeable — from the Carlton Dance to its instantly recognizable theme song. And while it was a goofy fish-out-of-water sitcom, the series also revealed layers and heft, with humor (and occasionally some very special drama) that frequently touched on class and race.Listen to more Pop Culture Happy Hour at these links: Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google Podcasts, NPR.org, or anywhere you get your podcasts.
Join me and my cohost, Caleb, as we discuss an episode of this 1950's TV Classic which was requested by our listener, Pam. As usual, there is spirited conversation and cool trivia at the end! Caleb has VERY strong opinions about Ralph's mental issues and the fact that he is NOT a millennial! Among other things, we mention: The Partridge Family, Mama's Family, Smokey and the Bandit, Back to the Future, Where the Crawdad Sings, The Carlton Dance, Betty White and...Seinfeld!

Today, the show we bring to you The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, the 90s American sitcom TV which kickstarted, Hollywood star Will Smith's career. This 148 episode family entertainer has over six seasons and is definitely a binge watch! Here are a few facts about the show that you probably didn't know.1. Jada Pinkett Smith was offered the role of Lisa, but she declined because she felt she lacked chemistry with Will. Quite amusingly, three years later, the actors got married to each other.2. Former US president Donald Trump, then a businessman, made a cameo appearance in one of the episodes but felt his lines weren't funny. Eventually, executive producer Gary H Miller had to convince him that they actually were. 3. The show ended after six seasons because Will felt it was beginning to lose its charm. Further, he had also started getting offers from Hollywood movies by then. 4. Actor Alfonso Ribeiro, who played Carlton in the show, sued the makers of Fortnite for stealing his famous dance moves ‘The Carlton Dance' for a popular video game ‘Fresh' in 2018, without giving him a credit. However, the US copyrights for Performing Arts rejected his plea. You could watch this series exclusively on Netflix.Well, that's some lesser-known trivia about The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air on today's podcast. I shall be back soon with another episode of OTTplay Now You Know. This is your host Nikhil signing off.

In our latest episode, Kate and Allison are joined by @BravoWhileBlack's Kaya Wilson to talk about the origins of 'The Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air,' why it terrified studio executives, and just how easy it was to write one of the most iconic theme songs ever created. Know how to bust some sweet dance moves? You might want to find a good attorney. Epic Games, maker of Fortnite and NBA 2K has put the Carlton Dance into some of its video games, and the actor who portrayed Carlton on The Fresh Prince, Alfonso Ribeiro, is suing, saying Epic Games is unfairly profiting off of his signature move. Who’s going to win this dance off between Carlton and Epic Games? Fabio Marino is vice chair of the IP department at Polsinelli and joins us today.
Today's episode is an update. In episode 7 of season 1 of the legal tea with discussed Fornite's problematic behavior. Where the company was using dances made popular by black artist in their game without permission, credit or payment. We talked about copyrights as they relate to dance and the likelihood of someone succeeding on a copyright infringement lawsuit. In episode 15 of season 1 we discussed the lawsuits filed by 2 Milly and Alfonso Riberio against Fornite for copyright infringement and right to publicity. It was really just a matter of time. Well since then there have been some major movement in those two lawsuits. Plus we had a listener ask, how do you get right to publicity? I figured the best way to answer this question and to further explain why the case against Fornite really isn't about copyrights is to discuss the EA Sports lawsuit from a few years ago. Top 3 takeaways 1. Right of publicity gives you the right to exclude others from making money off of your likeness without your permission. 2. Everybody has this right. It is not reserved for celebrities and high profile people 3. It is a up hill battle trying to copyright dance moves that involve only a few steps Visit thelegaltea.co and tell me what you think Visit iprotectbrands.com to schedule a time to discuss your legal needs. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
