The Thirteenth Hour Podcast #507 and Like A Hood Ornament #76: Reading "The Rocketeer" Movie Novelization Chapter 19

The Thirteenth Hour Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 28, 2025 27:34

This week, I'm reading the nineteenth chapter of the Peter David penned movie novelization of the 1991 Rocketeer film.  This chapter takes place in the study of Howard Hughes, the inventor of the Cirrus X-3 rocketpack in the world of the film (in Dave Steven's original story, it was his unnamed analogue of Doc Savage).  In this scene, you can see what's in Cliff's pockets, a Dave Stevens cameo as an ill-fated German rocketeer, an animated film featuring German rocket troopers, and references to the Spruce Goose (the Hughes H-4, a gargantuan - 218 ft long with a 319 ft wingspan - wooden flying boat meant to ferry men and equipment across the Atlantic during WW2).  Interestingly enough, the book has Cliff hang glide from Howard Hughes' study all the way to the Chaplin airfield (which was actually filmed in Santa Maria, CA, some 150+ miles northwest)!  Presumably, the airfield in the movie was not actually in Santa Maria.  That said, there is a museum there, the Santa Maria Museum of Flight, that has a number of remaining props used in the film, as it was the real life hangar used in the film (check out this clip for some very thorough detective work of filming locations).   Although it aired on Disney Channel around the time the movie was released, Rocketeer: Excitement in the Air (both a featurette on the film as well as a documentary on manned flight hosted by Billy Campbell) has some shots of the real life Spruce Goose as well as some shots of its maiden (and only) flight as well as some info on Howard Hughes.   It's well worth a watch! Thanks for listening!∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞ Signup for the mailing list for a free special edition podcast, a demo copy of The Thirteenth Hour, and access to retro 80s soundtrack!Like what you see or hear? It's time for yet another Hot Topix involving everyone's favourite Billionaire nemesis, Elon Musk. For those of you who have been living under a rock, Elon Musk is a South Africa-born, American tech entrepreneur who made his initial fortune co-founding and then selling the online payment platform PayPal. With his millions from PayPal, Musk embarked on a Howard Hughes like adventure, taking whacky ideas from the fringes, electric cars and colonising Mars and made them mainstream with Tesla and SpaceX. Like Hughes, Musk has amassed a ridiculous fortune from his crazy ideas and also like Hughes, the money and fame seems to have gone to his head. Howard Hughes made his fortune from Oil wells in Texas and decided to build the Spruce Goose, the largest airplane ever built that flew once for a grand total of 30 seconds before being turned into a museum. Elon turned his passion for snide commentary and provoking the government in rants to his 200 million Twitter followers into a $44 billion bid to take Twitter private, change the name to X and turn it into a free speech platform.Howard Hughes ended up living in Las Vegas hotel penthouse refusing to cut his toenails and drinking his own Urine, Musk has become a big supporter of Donald Trump's third bid to become President of the United States.Just like Michael Corleone said in the Godfather part 3 "Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in!", the Decentralists are back talking about Elon Musk. Tune in to this episode of Hot Topix to find out why?

Who's That Girl? A New Girl Podcast

This podcast covers New Girl Season 4, Episode 14, Swuit, which originally aired on February 3, 2015 and was written by Noah Garfinkel and directed by Trent O'Donnell. Here's a quick recap of the episode:Nick and Schmidt have brought their old company, Schnick Industries, to life and are trying to sell a new product. Meanwhile, Coach and Winston help Cece pay for college. This episode got a 9/10 rating from both Kritika and Kelly; Kritika's favorite character was Schnick Industries and Kelly's favorite was Jess. While not discussed in the podcast, we noted other references in this episode including:Lori Greiner - Nick and Schmidt had a pitch meeting with Lori Greiner. We also featured her as the guest star in this episode. Hewlett Packard - While bickering, Schmidt said, “You think Hewlett had to put up with this crap from Packard? Think Again.” Howard Hughes / Spruce Goose - Schmidt told Nick he can't be “loosey-goosey”, which prompted Nick to say that Howard Hughes invented the Loose-Goose. However, Schmidt corrected that the plane was called the “Spruce-Goose”. But Nick did know that the plane did fly “for over a mile at an altitude of 72 feet!” Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - Kai wanted to have “Ninja Turtle sex” with backpacks on with Nick. David Hockney - While discussing Cece's classes at school, Winston and Coach asked “What you gonna do, Cece, join the South African space program and be the first woman to put a David Hockney painting on the moon?” Batman and Robin - By the end of the episode, Nick and Schmidt felt like they were “Batman and Robin”, but both wanted to be Batman. Thanks for listening and stay tuned for Episode 15! Some would consider Howard Hughes a Godfather of sorts for American aviation.  Howard was a complex human being to say the very least. The man was a Movie Producer/Director, an Aircraft Designer, Test Pilot, Airline Owner, Record Setting Pilot, The Wealthiest Man in the World, Casino Owner, Congressional Asskicker, and more. Plus he survived 4 airplane crashes. But those things may pale in comparison to the madness that accompanied Howard's genius. We cover it all here. Class is in session.

Did a senorita in a dance hall cut a rug with the Devil Himself? Did a Gas Station Attendant from Gabbs, Nevaada pick up a reclusive millionaire and take him to the Sands Hotel to get rewarded in a will that was ruled a forgery? Did a comedian hitch a ride with a phantom car? Did one of our listeners encounter Elvis after he was supposed to be dead? I had a great time at the Google Events in LA and Irvine, the LA office is in the old Spruce Goose hanger, the former home to Howard Hughes wooden aircraft that was an engineering marvel, except for the part where it only flew once. It was 6 times larger than any aircraft built at the time in 1947 with a hanger just as large. They literally built a building inside the hanger, incorporating all the style and history, and that is the Google LA Office! Also…. I mayyyy have had a conversation or two about doing a Google Workspace Focused event at the Spruce Goose office in LA, so! Stay tuned for more on that as it evolves. Spanning Decks 6, 7 and 8, Celebration Central is an update to the fabulous starboard side atrium that debuted on Mardi Gras, designed as the heart of the ship's celebratory spirit with a whole new look and the feeling of a festive party woven throughout.Celebration Central will also feature the awe-inspiring, three-deck-high atrium that guests are quickly getting to know and love, but with a ceiling that appears as a burst of a confetti canon made of approximately 1,400 color-changing lighting fixtures that will transform from day to night. Functional as it is eye-catching, the space will include 3,000-square-foot floor-to-ceiling windows on the side of the ship that will change into 16 individually controlled, six- by 14-foot LED screens to work hand in hand with the ever-changing entertainment options, including live music, special effects, aerial acrobatic performances, and high-energy shows.Introducing nods to Carnival's Fun Ship history, guests will spot pieces from former Carnival ships that will be repurposed to blend with the ship's modern decor throughout Celebration Central and beyond. For example, in the Aquaria Bar, ocean-themed glass murals from Carnival Victory by Italian artist Luciano Vistosi will be incorporated into a striking two-deck-high decorative wall behind the bar to create an aquarium-like effect, inspiring the name. And the Tropicale Bar is named after Carnival's first ship to sport the line's iconic funnel.Celebration Central will also include food and beverage options, such as JavaBlue Café, Bonsai Sushi and Bonsai Teppanyaki, and feel-good entertainment such as Piano Bar 88 and The Punchliner Comedy Club. The Ultimate PlaygroundAfter such an incredible response from guests on Mardi Gras, the centerpiece of Carnival Celebration's Ultimate Playground (Decks 18-20 Aft) will be BOLT, The Ultimate Sea Coaster, soon to be the second roller coaster at sea, recognized by Popular Science with a “Best of What's New” award. Guests can expect the thrills they've raved about as all-electric, motorcycle-inspired vehicles race along an 800-foot-long track 187 feet above the sea achieving speeds of up to 40 miles per hour.Reaching a very exciting milestone, Mauer Rides, the manufacturer of the groundbreaking top-deck attraction, has fully assembled BOLT on land and is currently conducting initial shoreside unmanned test runs in Munich, Germany. BOLT will soon be reassembled and installed aboard Carnival Celebration. Designed for fun for all-ages, the zone will also be home to the WaterWorks aqua park and SportSquare featuring a mini-golf course, full-court basketball and an exhilarating ropes course.Summer Landing and LidoCarnival Celebration's Summer Landing zone (Deck 8 Aft) will continue to serve as the greatest chill spot at sea with Guy's Pig & Anchor Smokehouse Brewhouse, offering smoked-on-board favorites created by Guy Fieri and an assortment of Carnival's ParchedPig craft beers brewed on site, in addition to pools and whirlpools, The Watering Hole poolside bar, and the Heroes Tribute Lounge honoring military personnel. And the poolside zone, Lido (Decks 16-17 Aft), will feature all of the delicious and fun experiences from Mardi Gras including the two-level RedFrog Tiki Bar designed to transport guests to a South Pacific paradise, Shaquille O'Neal's Big Chicken restaurant, guest-favorite Guy's Burger Joint, Seafood Shack, and BlueIguana Cantina, with offerings perfect for any tastebud, any time.Cunard announces Matt Moran to headline inaugural Great Australian Culinary VoyageAcclaimed Australian chef and restaurateur Matt Moran to spoil food afficionados on board luxurious Queen ElizabethCunard has announced legendary chef, restaurateur, TV host and author, Matt Moran will headline the talent program for its extraordinary five-day Great Australian Culinary Voyage departing Sydney on 28 January 2023.While on board, the Australian icon will create exclusive dishes for onboard diners and share his passion for Australian food and produce with Cunard guests through talks and interviews.Cunard's inaugural Great Australian Culinary Voyage will celebrate all aspects of Australia's unique food and wine offering on a five-day cruise from Sydney on 28 January 2023. While the RRS Sir David Attenborough is focused on science and the logistical support of British research stations, Le Commandant Charcot was purpose-built to take guests on voyages to high latitudes, whilst conducting scientific research along the way. When it was realised both ships would coincidentally meet in Carroll Inlet at 73°15 south, it offered the perfect opportunity to combine the capabilities of both ships to work in tandem.Le Commandant Charcot features a unique PC2 hull design, with the ability to sail in ‘double-acting mode', specifically enabling the ship to tackle thicker and more dense ice; she does this more quickly and efficiently by sailing backwards.Le Commandant Charcot opened a channel by sailing astern, with the RRS Sir David Attenborough following behind, working to widen the channel. This collaboration enabled a 3NM channel to be opened in just 3 hours. Despite creating a channel and getting close to the depot site, once Le Commandant Charcot had departed for her next destination, the sea ice conditions were against the ship, and the RRS Sir David Attenborough turned around. It is now seeking an alternative location nearby to depot cargo for Thwaites Glacier. There is a long-standing belief amongst polar professionals in collaboration and support where possible; and that we can achieve more by working together.Le Commandant Charcot is an LNG-electric hybrid vessel. She's the world's first PC2 Polar Class ship, making her the safest and most capable polar exploration passenger ship in the world, as well as one of the most luxurious. Le Commandant Charcot offers voyages to explore deep into the Antarctic and all the way to the North Pole, and simultaneously invites scientists from around the world to make use of her onboard laboratories to conduct research to further our understanding of these remote regions.Fred. You're listening to Artie Wayne with Freddy Martin and His Orchestra and…   You're on the Sound Beat.   While Howard Hughes' aviation career is popularly associated with “The Spruce Goose”, the Hughes H-1 Racer set the landplane air-speed record in 1935, and it occupies a place in history that exists now, and may very well forever. Speaking of that, you're listening to Now and Forever, from Tchaikovsky's Sixth Symphony. It was used in the 1943 film, “The Outlaw”, which Hughes produced. As for  particular place in history: when the H1 broke the record by travelling at 352 mph, it was the last civilian plane to break it. As we know from Leonardo Dicaprio, and researchers, of course, Hughes was a man consumed with success. Upon crash-landing the H1 in its initial test run, he stepped from the downed plane and announced “We can fix her; she'll go faster”.
