Manche mögen's hart – was Matratzen anbelangt.

On today's episode I talk to the lovely Rach who is the founder of The Black Book Blog, which you'll be hearing more about in this episode! We discuss childhood reading including the books that influenced us, and discuss the lack of black representation in the stories we read growing up. We talk about why there needs to be changes in the school curriculums regarding the literary texts we study and how problematic past choices have been. Rach explains why she started The Black Book Blog and talks about the importance of reading diversely. She also shares her thoughts on 75-80% of the publishing industry being white and we discuss ways this is changing. We do also have a discussion around what's been happening online between feminist authors Florence Given and Chidera Eggerue. *A quick note that things have progressed since we recorded this episode (On 11th Dec) and further statements have been released including one from Florence*.

Russell and Robert meet British artist Somaya Critchlow whose figurative paintings of women explore facets of race, sex and culture. Working mostly on a small scale, her works depict bold, curvaceous and self-possessed female characters, of her own creation, that simultaneously combine and subvert the culture expectations of race, gender and power in the history of portraiture. They are self-reflective and personal, and at the same time commentary of the cultural, class and political dynamics of contemporary society. We discuss the bringing together of pop culture influences including 'Love and Hip Hop', Cardi B, Lil' Kim, Nicki Minaj with artistic influences of Rubens, Renaissance masters and European miniatures. We explore her alienation from the art history she studied growing up and the lack of representation, tying in autobiographical references in her new works, her response to the death and problematic life of rapper XXXTentacion, the paintings of Lisa Yuskavage, Leonora Carrington, Leonor Fini, Lucy Stein, cartoonist Robert Crumb, architect Carlo Mollino and filmmaker David Lynch. We discuss the appeal of 1960s-70s style, kitsch, vintage erotica, life-drawing and the writing of Angela Carter including her feminist reappraisal of the Marquis de Sade’s books. We also chat about the more recent movement to openly discuss body image, sexuality and representation in the mainstream including writer/documentary maker Chidera Eggerue and Instagram community iWeigh.Somaya’s forthcoming solo exhibition ‘Underneath a Bebop Moon’ will be at Maximillian William, London. Harriet, Emma and Natalie are joined by Chidera Eggerue AKA “The Slumflower”, the mind that brought us “Saggy Boobs Matter”.Chidera is talking about her latest book “How To Get Over A Boy” which looks at the idea of romance vs love and the idea of love and relationships we are shown in the media especially in the 90’s era of rom-coms and chick-flicks. Chidera explains what the real “P-word” is and why women seem to accept less than they deserve and compromise within relationships more than a man. This week's episode is all about men's mental health. In the UK, suicide is the biggest killer in men under the age of 45. Earlier this week, the feminist blogger Chidera Eggerue posted a viral tweet where she said men killing themselves because they can't cry is not her issue as a feminist. But male suicide isn't exclusively a feminist issue, it's everybody's issue. I spoke to Callum McCulloch about his experience with depression and anxiety. He first began to notice symptoms during his second year of university, but put off seeing a doctor to get a proper diagnosis for a prolonged period. He also found that his friends weren't well equip to have conversations surrounding mental health, and when he tried to speak to them about it they did not have the language to help or brushed it off as a phase. After being forced by a friend, Callum saw a doctor and was diagnosed with depression and anxiety, prescribed antidepressants and also saw a therapist. He said if his friend had not pressured him to speak to a doctor, he doesn't know what may have happened. --LINKS-- CALM: https://bit.ly/2ohFgX4 MIND: https://www.mind.org.uk SAMARITANS: https://www.samaritans.org/ HEADS TOGETHER: https://www.headstogether.org.uk

Chidera Eggerue started a movement with one simple question: why does society insist she wear a bra? Her quest for answers has made her one of the UK's leading campaigners for body positivity - and an inspiration to anyone feeling overlooked by 'traditional' notions of beauty. At the beginning of 2018, BBC Radio 5 Live decided to be the station that shone a light on Spoken Word. To highlight the huge wealth of young talent currently in the UK - the experiences they go through every day and crafting that into beautifully, honest reflections of their world. We focused on some of big news stories and talking points ranging from poverty to mental health, knife crime to Brexit and the Royal Wedding to the FA Cup Final and asked some of the UK’s emerging and established artists to write about how they see these stories. To look back on our Year in Spoken Word, Afternoon Edition's Nihal Arthanayake invited poet and musician Hussain Manawer and author Chidera Eggerue to review our past 12 months.

Body shaming is discrimination against 'non-perfect' bodies and it is usually directed at women. Kim Chakanetsa sits down with a Danish comedian and a British blogger who are challenging society's perceptions of a beautiful female body. Chidera Eggerue - aka The Slumflower - is a British blogger whose hashtag #saggyboobsmatter started an online movement, empowering women who were considering plastic surgery and breast-feeding mothers to love their breasts. Through her public profile, she tackles the absence of positive representation of black women's bodies, bullying and insecurity. Sofie Hagen is an award-winning Danish comedian and fat activist. As a chubby child, she was forced to go on diets, which she says led to her hating her body and was detrimental to her mental health. At university Sofie met a fat activist who changed her life. She then co-started a campaigning group in Denmark, Fedfront, and talks a lot about fatness in her comedy. She says that on a good day she will only receive 100 death threats because of her weight and gender. Image: (L): Chidera Eggerue. Credit: Tom Oldham Image: (R): Sofie Hagen. Credit: Karla Gowlett

This is a special live episode recording live at Waterstones Tottenham Court Road as part of my Multi-Hyphen Method book tour.I spoke to the amazing Chidera Eggerue aka The Slumflower, author of WHAT A TIME TO BE ALONE, viral sensation and inspirational speaker who makes the Internet a better place. We were also joined by Louise Troen, VP of International marketing at Bumble (one of the sponsors of my UK book tour!) In this episode, I discuss topics from my book The Multi-Hyphen Method - we discuss confidence, self-promotion, new definitions of success, creativity in the workplace, flexi-hours and how to foster diverse thought at work. I absolutely loved recording this episode, and hope you enjoy listening! See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
