Send us Fan MailGraduation can look like freedom, excitement, and a fresh start — but for many teens and young adults, it can also feel confusing, lonely, and overwhelming once the structure of high school disappears. In this episode, I use the analogy of high school as a “zoo” and adulthood as “the wild” to explain why the transition after graduation can feel so hard, even for teens who were excited to leave. For 12 years, students have bells, schedules, teachers, parents, and routines helping guide their days. Then suddenly, after graduation, they are expected to make decisions, manage time, handle loneliness, advocate for themselves, and figure out what to do when things feel harder than expected. I also talk about why we need to begin building independence, problem-solving, and emotional resilience long before senior year. This episode is a reminder that feeling homesick, unsure, or overwhelmed during the launch into adulthood does not mean your teen is failing. It means they are learning how to live in the wild. If you're a high school senior who just committed to a college, or you've already graduated and you're heading to your freshman year, this one is for you. You did it. You got in. You made the call. And the next chapter is genuinely one of the wildest, most growth filled seasons of your entire life. New city, new people, new freedom, new version of you. It's exciting. Here's what almost nobody is telling you. The academic prep, the dorm shopping, the roommate matching, all of that gets covered constantly. The part that actually trips most freshmen up has nothing to do with classes or grades. Nearly 30% of college freshmen do not return for their sophomore year. The reasons usually aren't grades. They aren't money. It's mental health. It's loneliness. It's feeling like they don't belong on that campus. And almost none of those students were less capable than anyone else. They were just unprepared for the LIFE part of college. This episode is about the five pillars that change everything. The exact things that separate the freshmen who thrive from the ones who quietly struggle. You'll hear why those first six weeks set the entire tone, why the habits that worked in high school are about to stop working, and what you can actually build right now before you ever step on campus. If you're somewhere between "I cannot wait" and "I'm low key terrified," that's exactly where you're supposed to be. The goal is not to feel less of either of those. The goal is to walk in with the tools to handle both. Why being both excited and nervous about college is exactly where you should be What changes overnight the day your parents drive away from your dorm The real reason nearly 30% of freshmen don't return for sophomore year and how to not be one of them How to actually make real friends in college, because the lasting ones don't just happen Why sleep, active rest, and movement are the foundation that everything else gets built on How to fuel your brain in a dining hall full of midnight waffles and 2 PM pizza What to do at 2 AM when everything feels like too much and a deadline is looming The campus support and resources nobody is going to tell you about and why to use them early What life looks like in October when you've actually been preparing How to walk into your freshman year with clarity, confidence, and a real plan Parents: This one is for you too. If you have a high school senior or recent grad heading to college, the gap between "academically ready" and "life ready" is the one most families don't see coming. You'll hear the patterns that lead nearly 30% of freshmen home before sophomore year, and what actually protects your student in their first six weeks on campus. Listen with them if you can. Then talk through which of the five pillars they feel most ready for and where they want more support before move in day. Ready to give yourself or your student a real foundation for freshman year? The Freshman Formula is a five day video mini series built specifically for incoming college freshmen. Each day covers one of the five pillars with worksheets, checklists, and habit building tools you can start using before you ever set foot on campus. Plus a one on one coaching session built around your specific goals, your specific campus, and your specific stressors. Once you finish the five days, all the content stays accessible so you can come back to it during that first month when you'll need it most. Grab it at the introductory price below before it goes up. Are you discouraged by the racial division that plagues our country today? If so, don't miss this episode of Godly Goosebumps, in which Pastor Dudley shares the story of David Richmond, Franklin McCain, Ezell Blair, Jr., and Joseph McNeil, also known as the Greensboro Four. In February of 1960, these four courageous young Black men walked into the F.W. Woolworth Company store and sat down at an all-white lunch counter, challenging the segregation policies that characterized the social and moral landscape of their time. Little did they know, their actions would be a catalyst for a wave of nonviolent protests that played a critical role in the broader civil rights movement. This episode offers a powerful lesson on the ability we all possess to reshape our communities, overcoming hate and cultivating Christ-centered unity.

In this episode, Tarina and Nic talk about dropping off their daughter at college. As Tarina says, “Elle is now far, far away.” Nic describes his own moment when it really started to hurt as he watched Elle, during orientation, being too nervous to admit she was nervous.During the orientation session for parents, they explained the “W” model and the likely path and feelings their new freshman would experience their first year. It always starts with a honeymoon period followed by culture shock then a rebound. It's a lot of ups and downs and parents have a job to self-regulate and refrain from trying to fix everything.Chapter 6 and 7 of Nic's book Know This Do That are discussed. As Nic highlights, putting a man on the moon takes someone who's willing to push a broom and clean a toilet. What we take pride in ultimately reflects who we are.The same is true for who we surround ourselves with. If your friends, Nic says, are talking more about what video games they're playing than what investments they're making, you may want to switch things up a bit.Parents do this intentionally when they pick what city to live in, what school to send their kids to, and what church to attend. Nic tells of being the beneficiary of some “Larry Bittle Crap” (runs in the family, I guess) about choosing what pond Nic would fish in. The proof is in the pudding since Nic reeled in Tarina and got his proud angler award. If you enjoy Nic and Tarina's podcast and get something from listening to “all this Nic Bittle Crap,” please hit the like button, share it with a friend, or both. In this week's Podcast, Lee & Ric interview 3 recently graduated students who are preparing for college. In this very personal interview they talk about their mindset going through the life of a church while struggling to own their own faith. Ethan, Tenison, and Matt talk about their struggle and crisis of belief and what took place for them to make their faith, their "own." Student ministers can listen to these guys and gain insight into the mind of three guys who grew up in church and didn't just accept what they were told...they had to find it out for themselves. They will learn about what worked for them and what didn't...not to mention a cautionary warning to adults and the power of their influence. This one was brutally honest. So, as usual...pour yourself a cup of coffee and hang out with us and these three guys as we talk about construction of a faith they own! Jealously has been a sneaky side effect of the pandemic. It's easy to think that someone has it better than you when there are all different levels of school and work opening for fall. Jealously can actually be used in a really positive way if you know what to do with it. Today's pep-talk, I share how a moment of jealously helped me and how you can use it to get what you want in your life.
what a time: getting you across campus (and beyond) one pep talk at a time
The pandemic has turned college admissions upside down. Without SAT/ACT scores, extracurriculars, and with semesters of pass/fail grades, the traditional admissions rubric no longer works. This is a huge opportunity as more weight shifts towards a student's character making essays, interviews, and recommendations essential. In this episode, I share my #1 tip to stand out in college essays and cover letters. Knowing who you are, why you want to be a student at a specific school, and how to articulate it, is now crucial. This is a pandemic shift I am actually excited about!
