In this summer episode of For the Record, Coun. Paul Minhas makes another appearance in studio to analyze the latest activities of New West city politicos. What do President Joe Biden and the New West Mayor have in common? Well, some say they may both soon have close allies and supporters asking them to step down for the 'good of the party'. That's a topic we explore as we undertake a special look ahead to what might transpire in the 2026 civic election year. Will Community First actually have a new candidate for mayor? Or will they hunker down and hope for the best under the current leadership?A proposal for a new Marriott hotel on Columbia Street above the historic Columbia Theater was on the docket for discussion. How tall should it be? Will it impact a possible redevelopment of the adjacent Army and Navy site? What type of community amenities will we get as a result of this latest tower proposal? Federal NDP leader Jagmeet Singh seems to have inspired - or perhaps heavily encouraged - his political allies in New Westminster to publicly endorse his idea of having Ottawa bureaucrats begin setting the price of our local groceries. Yes, a motion was brought to council for debate regarding sending a letter to the Prime Minister encouraging him to start setting the price of our 'essential' groceries. But just exactly what is classified as 'essential'? Furthermore, should provincial or federal politics be directly influencing civic debates in New West? The topic of e-scooters makes it on to the podcast as we play a segment that aired on the Mike Smyth Show on CKNW this week. The switchboard lit up with callers, all of whom had some pretty strong opinions. Sit back, pop in the earbuds and enjoy this latest podcast. Be sure to tell family and friends to listen too. What Michael Jordan is to basketball, and Charles Lindberg and Amelia Earhart are to aviation, Harry Houdini is to the world of magic. But even legends have slumps in their career. Harry Houdini was having one in 1908, but figured a way to turn the tide right here in St. Louis. Just press play to hear the whole story. ——— Click on search links to see if there are episodes with related content: Andrew Wanko, Arts, Entertainment, and Culture, Business, People of Note, ——— Podcast Transcript: I'm Andrew Wanko, Public Historian of the Missouri Historical Society, and Here's History on 88-one, KDHX. ——— Even a century after his death, it seems like everyone knows at least something about Harry Houdini. The most famous magician in history, Houdini took to the theater stages of St. Louis at least five times across his career, but a visit in 1908 holds a special place in Houdini lore. It was then that one of his most famous and dangerous stunts made its world debut. ——— Across the early 1900s, Houdini had escaped being lashed to planks, stuffed into packing cases, and clasped into countless handcuffs. But he sensed a problem. Audiences were getting bored with seeing the same old escapes. In January of 1908, Houdini appeared before a small and lackluster crowd at the Columbia Theater in Downtown St. Louis. Manager Frank Tate, disgusted by the empty chairs, told the famous magician he wasn't worth a five-dollar bill anymore. Houdini needed a new hook, something that brought a sense of danger to his shows. ——— On January 27, 1908, St. Louisans attending Houdini's show at the Columbia watched as a giant galvanized metal jug was hauled onto the stage. Attendants dumped in endless buckets of water. Then Houdini stepped inside, inhaled deeply, and dropped down beneath the water's surface. The heavy lid was slammed shut and locked with six locks, and a curtain drawn in front of the can. ——— The St. Louis audience sat in captivated silence, broken only by the occasional nervous cough. As the seconds ticked by, a panicked axe-wielding assistant came out ready to smash open the can, another carefully timed visual meant to set the audience's pulse racing even faster. ——— After two tense minutes, Houdini whipped back the curtain to reveal himself soaking wet and alive. The crowd that just the night before was yawning and disinterested roared with applause. The Milk Can escape's deadly stakes – or at least the appearance of them - brought Houdini's career back to life. From its St. Louis debut it would become one of his trademark escapes, baffling audiences all the way up to his death in 1926. ——— Here's history is a joint production of the Missouri Historical Society and KDHX. I'm Andrew Wanko and this is 88.1 KDHX St. Louis. ———

"No Te Va Gustar", also known by the initials NTVG, is one of Uruguay's most successful and international rock bands. Since 2011, NTVG has been consistently nominated at the Latin Grammys, filling soccer stadiums in Argentina and Uruguay and touring major stages in Colombia, Chile and Mexico. Until now, they have released eleven studio albums, six live and one anniversary edition. After eleven years the band is finally back on tour in Europe and at the Columbia Theater in Berlin on August 8th. Our reporter Leticia had the opportunity to interview the lead singer Emiliano Brancciari and trombonist Martín Gil before the concert. You can hear what they had to say in our newest podcast in their native tongue Spanish.

January 25, 1908. Harry Houdini is the most famous magician in America. He’s known for his escapes – from handcuffs, boxes, jail cells, even a giant football. But the escape act is getting old, and ticket sales aren’t what they used to be. And on this day, an under-capacity audience at the Columbia Theater in St. Louis is about to witness Houdini’s most dangerous escape yet… from death itself. How did a Hungarian immigrant named Erik Weisz become Harry Houdini? And when his career was fading, how did Houdini embrace death to bring it back to life?Special thanks to our guest, Joe Posnanski (author of The Life and Afterlife of Harry Houdini). Additional thanks to San Diego magician Tom Interval for providing archival audio of Houdini. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Justin and Jay sit down with Kentucky native and world renowned Cellist, Ben Sollee. Ben was in Paducah, Ky doing a micro-residency and helping in efforts to raise funds for the Columbia Theater revitalization project. He also played a brilliant show at Maiden Alley Cinema that night as well.

TRACY BRYANT "A Crowded Room" A Place For Nothing And Everything In Its Place (Burger, 2017) LP/CD/CS/DIGITAL AVAILABLE OCTOBER 20, 2017 VIDEO FOR "FOREVER CERTAIN": www.youtu.be/UqhPJyrRc1Y PRE-ORDER NOW: www.burgerrecords.com Los Angeles based musician Tracy Bryant, as a one of a kind solo artist, is speaking out as an outstanding singer/songwriter who isn’t afraid to dig below the surface. With his work he is filling the gap between lush pop-arrangements and a genuine, distinctive sound. One not hard to enter, but no way to just pass by. While Tracy Bryant’s music may call out as a memento from the lonely highway, we can’t help but wish to join him on his journey. As the frontman and founder of post-punk experimentalists Corners, he recorded the group’s first album, Beyond Way, in his Echo Park apartment in 2012 with just a four-track tape recorder. While the follow-up LP, Maxed out on Distractions, was very much a group effort, Bryant has continued to cultivate the haunted, solitary sounds that permeate through Beyond Way on his own. Corners toured the U.S. and Europe extensively before Bryant decided to end the band in early 2016 to fully focus on his solo endeavors. His first full length solo album “Subterranean” was released February 19th, 2016 on Burger Records. Imbued with the studied swagger of Lou Reed and the emotionally damaged earnestness of Johnny Thunders, the 12 songs are a logical extension of Beyond Way’s dark Americana, with layered acoustic guitars, hypnotic electric leads and hushed vocals setting an eerily inviting tone. Recorded in the Arizona desert by Matt Rendon of The Resonars, it was tracked mostly live with the help of friends Joo-Joo Ashworth, Jeremy Katz (Froth) and Cameron Gartung (Mystic Braves). The album garnered positive reviews worldwide and peaked at #43 on the CMJ radio 200 chart. Upon its release, Bryant embarked on a full band European tour supporting King Khan And The Shrines which culminated with a sold-out show at the 800 capacity Columbia Theater in Berlin, Germany. The band followed the tour with a successful debut at 2016’s SXSW music festival in Austin, Texas. With an all-star new band line up consisting of Nick Murray (Thee Oh Sees / White Fence) on drums, Brian Allen (Burnt Ones) on bass and Miles Luttrel (Useless Eaters) on second guitar, the group will be on the road touring the west coast up to Vancouver Island, Canada to play Otalith Festival. To introduce Bryant’s new album “A Place for Nothing And Everything in its Place” (out on Burger Records October 20th, 2017) he will head over to Europe and the UK for a month long tour in December joined by his European backing band of Brian Allen on bass, Nick Winfrey (Adult Books) on second guitar and Leonard Kaage (Jawbones, Anton Newcombe & Tess Parks) on drums.. “A Place for Nothing And Everything In Its Place” was recorded in early 2016 in Berlin, Germany. Originally conceived to be an introspective acoustic album, the written songs, once in the studio, developed into a fully arranged, conceptual work. With the help of producer Leonard Kaage, the acoustic intention became the red line that guides the nine songs through their variety. Bryant’s lyrics go a more personal way and follow inner and outer conflicts captured through the words of a restless outsider who ends up finding the company of love. The album is filled with dreamy footnotes of piano, 60‘s percussion and a more than once appearance of edgy guitars. Imagine a classic singer/songwriter record loaded with the intimacy and grit reminiscent of Alex Chilton or Nikki Sudden. A true milestone that marks an important progression in Bryant’s career as a solo artist. The album got its finishing touch by the mastering of Los Angeles pioneer Dave Cooley (Ariel Pink, The Black Angels, M83).

Mary Church was born on September 26, 1863 in Memphis, Tennessee. Her father, a self-educated former slave, became a millionaire investing in real estate. She received a Bachelor's degree in 1884 from Oberlin College. In 1887, she moved to Washington, D.C. to teach at the M Street High School. After receiving a Master's degree from Oberlin in 1888, she toured Europe to study languages. In 1892, she founded the Colored Woman’s League of Washington, D.C., one of the first black women’s clubs. The League started a training program and a kindergarten before these were incorporated in the Washington public school system. Here's Mary Church Terrell's account of the state of "colored" children. She delivered this address before the National American Women's Suffrage Association at the Columbia Theater, Washington, D.C., February 18, 1898.
