The landscape of comedy has undergone a seismic shift in recent years with an increasing number of female comedians breaking through to mainstream audiences. Women are claiming high-profile roles as late-night hosts, sketch comedians, television producers, and standup stars. As they disrupt industry norms and transgress cultural boundaries, they have also become lightning rods for controversy, eliciting flares of anger, amazement, revulsion, or hope. Caught in the Crosshairs: Feminist Comedians and the Culture Wars (Indiana UP, 2025) delves not only into the work of feminist icons like Samantha Bee, Amy Schumer, Leslie Jones, Michelle Wolf, and Hannah Gadsby, but also into the discourse surrounding their comedy. Author Amber Day argues that these debates transcend mere entertainment; they are cultural battlegrounds for larger philosophical and political conflicts, interrogating ideals of gender, race, power, and public space. We see conflicts over what should be considered scandalous or beyond the pale, who should be in the intended audience, what is appropriate behavior for which performing bodies, and what the boundaries of comedy ultimately are. Caught in the Crosshairs is an examination of how feminist comedy reflects the tensions of our times, disrupting established narratives and challenging traditional power structures. Michelle Wolf is probably best known for being the comedian who roasted Sarah Huckabee Sanders to her face at the White House Correspondents' Dinner in 2018. Seven years later, her only regret is that she wasn't meaner. In this episode, Wolf reflects on how much—and how little—has changed since, from Donald Trump's escalating attacks on comedians to her new identity as mom of two, which she explores in her new Netflix special ‘The Well.' She discusses her complicated reasons for turning down the Riyadh Comedy Festival, explains how her short-lived talk show ‘The Break' predicted Trump 2.0, and shares her take on the fragile state of late-night TV. And later, Wolf reveals how she ended up writing Kim Kardashian's SNL monologue after the reality star decided Amy Schumer's jokes weren't funny enough. On this episode of The Commercial Break, Bryan and Krissy sit down with the unstoppable Michelle Wolf (and one very new child) — the razor-sharp comic whose stand-up specials, White House Correspondents' Dinner set, and globe-trotting tours have turned her into one of the most fearless voices in modern comedy. The conversation winds through her running background, her writing years at Late Night and The Daily Show, what she thinks about the current “offense economy,” and why making yourself laugh first is still the only real rule in comedy. As always, Bryan and Krissy derail things with their signature chaos: strange gym stories, Venezuelan detours, and a wildly unnecessary deep dive into the best and worst places to bomb. Smart, sharp, and sneaky-funny as hell… this one's a treat. Today's episode is such a beautiful reminder that God truly is in the details. My guest, Michelle Wolf, is a mom of two who lives in Mexico. She chose homebirth for both of her babies, and while her first didn't go the way she had hoped — including a difficult recovery after tearing — God used her second birth story to show His faithfulness in such a powerful way. For baby number two, Michelle and her family traveled five hours to their midwife's home, and once again, God showed up — not just in the timing of everything, but in His presence as He met Michelle in her fear of tearing again. This episode is a testament that God knows the desires of your heart because He's the one who places them there. He designed birth with purpose and order, and when we follow His blueprint, blessings abound. But before we dive into Michelle's story, I have an exciting announcement to share. I've really been seeking the Lord lately about what He wants for this podcast and my role in the birth world — how I can best bring glory and honor to Him. And to be honest, I've been in such a season of transition. It's been stretching and uncomfortable… kind of like that moment in labor when you think you can't go any further, and that's exactly when transformation happens. Well, that transformation is here. I've gotten clear confirmation from the Lord to close down the coaching side of my business — something I've loved and invested so much into. And while it doesn't make sense on paper, I feel an incredible peace about it. Now don't worry — you can still work with me! It's just going to look a little different. ✨ This month, I'm hosting a brand-new masterclass called Renew Your Mind for Birth — a practical, faith-filled workshop designed to help you prepare for your God-designed homebirth. You'll learn what surrendering your birth to Jesus really looks like, uncover subconscious fears that might be sabotaging your pregnancy and homebirth dreams, and connect with other women who are preparing for a Jesus-centered birth experience. It's happening October 24th at 12:30pm CST on Zoom, and if you can't make it live, don't worry — I'll send you the replay so you won't miss a thing.
