We talk worship with pastors Aaron De Boer and Dr. Sean Morris with special attention to liturgy and practicalities that promote reverence and awe with Westminster's Directory for Worship as our guide.  Watch: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BNxWFYs8QZk A portion of the text: Of the Assembling of the Congregation, and their Behaviour in the Publick Worship of God WHEN the congregation is to meet for publick worship, the people (having before prepared their hearts thereunto) ought all to come and join therein; not absenting themselves from the publick ordinance through negligence, or upon pretence of private meetings. Let all enter the assembly, not irreverently, but in a grave and seemly manner, taking their seats or places without adoration, or bowing themselves towards one place or other. The congregation being assembled, the minister, after solemn calling on them to the worshipping of the great name of God, is to begin with prayer. "In all reverence and humility acknowledging the incomprehensible greatness and majesty of the Lord, (in whose presence they do then in a special manner appear,) and their own vileness and unworthiness to approach so near him, with their utter inability of themselves to so great a work; and humbly beseeching him for pardon, assistance, and acceptance, in the whole service then to be performed; and for a blessing on that particular portion of his word then to be read: And all in the name and mediation of the Lord Jesus Christ." The publick worship being begun, the people are wholly to attend upon it, forbearing to read any thing, except what the minister is then reading or citing; and abstaining much more from all private whisperings, conferences, salutations, or doing reverence to any person present, or coming in; as also from all gazing, sleeping, and other indecent behaviour, which may disturb the minister or people, or hinder themselves or others in the service of God. If any, through necessity, be hindered from being present at the beginning, they ought not, when they come into the congregation, to betake themselves to their private devotions, but reverently to compose themselves to join with the assembly in that ordinance of God which is then in hand.

On today's program, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America has sued a small church in California for legal title to its property—but that small church is fighting back. We'll have details.  And, a hacker drained $85,000 from an Oklahoma church's bank account. Then in North Dakota, a woman was indicted for stealing over $600,000 from a church she worked at. Both cases highlight why ordinary access to church finances can equal extraordinary losses—and the need for tightening protocols. Also, six months ago, Barnabas Aid came under scrutiny for accusations of financial mismanagement. Now, under new leadership, the ministry is working hard to turn things around. Plus, Bible Study Fellowship prepares its new headquarters in Grapevine, Texas. But first, Agape Flights, a Christian aviation ministry, lost contact with one of its planes last Thursday. The next day, search and rescue teams found the plane crashed in the Haitian mountains. No one on board survived the crash. The producer for today's program is Jeff McIntosh. We get database and other technical support from Stephen DuBarry, Rod Pitzer, and Casey Sudduth. Writers who contributed to today's program include Isaac Wood, Kim Roberts, Scott Barkley, Jessica Eturralde, Makella Knowles, and Christina Darnell. A special thanks to Baptist Press for contributing material for this week's podcast. Until next time, may God bless you.

The significance of this number in the context of the "Yeheh Shemeh Rabba" response is indicated by the Gemara, which speaks of the great rewards for reciting this response "Bechol Koho" – with all one's strength. The word "Koah" ("strength") in Gematria equals 28, and so we associate this response with the number 28. The Abudarham (Spain, 14 th century) maintained that the congregation should respond with 28 letters – "Yeheh Shemeh Rabba" through "Almaya." This response consists of seven words and 28 letters. Rav Yishak Abuhab (Spain, 14 th century), cited by the Bet Yosef, ruled that one should recite 28 words – from "Yeheh Shemeh Rabba" through "Da'amiran Be'alma." The Bet Yosef writes that the first view is incorrect, as one may not end the response after the word "Almaya." He brings a Midrash warning of grave punishment for those who make a separation between this word and the next word, "Yitbarach." This point is emphasized also by the great Kabbalist Rav Yosef Gikatilla (Spain, 13th century), who writes of the importance of not separating between these two words. Accordingly, the Shulhan Aruch writes that those who end their response with the word "Almaya" act incorrectly. The Magen Abraham (Rav Abraham Gombiner, Poland, 1635-1682) understood the Shulhan Aruch to mean that one should continue his response through the word "Be'alma," though the Magen Abraham himself maintained that one should respond only through "Almaya." Regardless, we generally follow the customs of the Arizal, who taught that one should respond through "Da'amiran Be'alma." There are some who respond through "De'Kudsha Berich Hu," but this practice has no halachic basis and is incorrect. Those who are accustomed to doing so should discontinue this practice. Among the Ashkenazim, many have the custom to respond only through "Almaya." This was the view of the Gaon of Vilna (1720-1797). He disputed the view that "Yitbarach" must be recited immediately after the word "Almaya," arguing that "Yitbarach" begins the next sentence. Nevertheless, some Ashkenazim add "Yitbarach" and conclude their response at that point. The Aruch Ha'shulhan (Rav Yechiel Michel Epstein, 1829-1908) observed that this was the prevalent practice among Lithuanian communities, despite the view of the Vilna Gaon. It is worth adding further insight into the connection between Kaddish and the number 28 – which, as mentioned, is the Gematria of the word "Koah." Rashi, in his opening comments to the Humash, writes that the Torah begins with the story of the world's creation in order to establish that the entire world belongs to G-d, as it is He who created it, and He thus had the authority to give Eretz Yisrael to the Jewish People. If the gentiles challenge our rights to our homeland – which they of course do, especially in our day and age – we must know that Hashem created the world and distributed it as He saw fit, and He decided to give us the Land of Israel. Rashi cites the verse in Tehillim (111:6), "Koah Ma'asav Higid Le'amo, La'tet Lahem Nahalat Goyim" – "He told His nation the power of His deeds, in order to give them the nations' territory." The story of G-d's "power," the creation of the world, is our response when nations challenge our right to the territory that we seized from the people of Canaan. Not coincidentally, the opening verse of the Torah ("Bereshit Bara Elokim…") consists of seven words and 28 letters – just like "Yeheh Shemeh Rabba…" – and Rashi links this verse to the verse "Koah Ma'asav Higid Le'amo," which begins with the word "Koah." Through our response to Kaddish, then, we access Hashem's unlimited power, expressed most strikingly through the act of creation, and this gives us the ability to withstand any challenge from our adversaries. It is worth noting in this context the famous Midrashic tradition that Moshe Rabbenu recited 515 prayers asking for the privilege of entering Eretz Yisrael (the numerical value of the word "Va'et'hanan"), and if he would have recited a 516 th prayer, Hashem would have had to grant his request. The commentaries explain that this 516 th prayer that Moshe would have recited was Kaddish, which begins with the words "Yitgadal Ve'yitkadash Shemeh Rabba." The first letters of these words (Yod, Vav, Shin, Resh) have a combined numerical value of 516 (10+6+300+200). This sheds additional light on the connection between Kaddish and Eretz Yisrael. When we recite and respond to Kaddish, we are asking that Hashem's Name should be glorified through our nation living in the land with the Bet Ha'mikdash under the reign of Mashiah, and this prayer has special power and significance. In light of this association between "Yeheh Shemeh Rabba" and the number 28, it is critically important to enunciate each word. If one responds too quickly, he might likely fail to pronounce the word "Min" in the phrase ("Le'ela Min Kol Birchata"), and will thus recite fewer than 28 words. The Poskim write that one should respond "Yeheh Shemeh Rabba" slowly and carefully, ensuring to properly pronounce each word. Summary: Our custom is to respond during Kaddish from "Yeheh Shemeh Rabba" through "Da'amiran Be'alma" – a total of 28 words. This number is very significant, and therefore one must ensure to respond slowly and properly pronounce all the words.

Welcome to Day 2795 of Wisdom-Trek. Thank you for joining me. This is Guthrie Chamberlain, Your Guide to Wisdom. Day 2795 – Wisdom Nuggets – Psalm 111:1-10 – Daily Wisdom Wisdom-Trek Podcast Script - Day 2795 Welcome to Wisdom-Trek with Gramps! I am Guthrie Chamberlain, and we are on Day two thousand seven hundred ninety-three of our Trek. The Purpose of Wisdom-Trek is to create a legacy of wisdom, to seek out discernment and insights, and to boldly grow where few have chosen to grow before. The Title for Today's Wisdom-Trek is: The A to Z of Wonder – Studying the Works of the Faithful God Today, we step off the battlefield of Psalm One Hundred Ten and walk into the study hall of the saints. We are beginning our exploration of Psalm One Hundred Eleven, covering the entire poem, verses one through ten, in the New Living Translation. In our previous trek through Psalm One Hundred Ten, we stood in the Divine Council. We saw the Messiah—the Priest-King after the order of Melchizedek—seated at the right hand of Yahweh. We witnessed the promise that He would crush the head of the serpent and make His enemies a footstool. It was a psalm of cosmic warfare, high theology, and future judgment. It was the view from the Throne. Psalm One Hundred Eleven shifts the perspective from the Throne to the Congregation. If Psalm One Hundred Ten was about the King's power, Psalm One Hundred Eleven is about the People's praise. It is a response to the victory. It is a quiet, organized, and deeply thoughtful meditation on what God has done. In the original Hebrew, this psalm is an acrostic poem. Each line begins with a successive letter of the Hebrew alphabet—Aleph, Bet, Gimel, and so on. It is an "A to Z" of praise. The psalmist is telling us that God's works are so complete, so perfect, and so orderly that they cover the entire alphabet of existence. Nothing is missing. This psalm invites us to become students. It tells us that the works of God are not just to be glanced at; they are to be "studied." So, let us open our textbooks of grace and begin our study of the works of the Lord. The first segment is: The Council of the Upright: The Context of Praise. Psalm One Hundred Eleven: verse one. Praise the Lord! I will thank the Lord with all my heart as I meet with his godly people. The psalm begins with the shout: "Hallelujah!" ("Praise the Lord!"). But immediately, the psalmist moves from the shout to the heart. "I will thank the Lord with all my heart..." This is wholehearted integration. There is no fragmentation here. His intellect, his emotions, and his will are all aligned in gratitude. And notice the location: "...as I meet with his godly people." The Hebrew phrase here is fascinating: "In the council (sod) of the upright and in the assembly." We have talked often about the Divine Council—the assembly of spiritual beings in heaven. Here, the psalmist uses that same terminology to describe the gathering of believers on earth. The church, the synagogue, the gathering of the saints—this is the earthly counterpart to the heavenly council. Just as the angels gather around the throne to discuss God's decrees, the...

In this episode of The Psychedelic Podcast, Paul F. Austin speaks with Dr. Paul Ryder, founding minister of the Congregation for Sacred Practices, about an alternative framework for psychedelic work rooted in spirituality, ritual, and community rather than medicine alone. Paul Ryder shares how his own experiences led him to treat psychedelics as sacraments, and why he believes the medical model, while valuable, represents only an early phase of the psychedelic renaissance. Together, they explore how CSP operates as both a church and a seminary, training licensed ministers to hold ceremonies ethically, safely, and within a religious legal framework. The conversation also examines the role of community in long-term transformation, the distinction between therapists and ministers, and why practices like breathwork, meditation, and integration circles are central to spiritual development. Throughout, Ryder offers a grounded perspective on how psychedelics can support not just healing, but maturation, responsibility, and a deeper sense of purpose. Often, on Shabbat and Yamim Tobim, the Hazzan sings the Kaddish in a melodious tune, and in some synagogues, the congregation joins the Hazzan's singing. The Kaf Ha'haim (Rav Yaakob Haim Sofer, Baghdad-Jerusalem, 1870-1939) writes that this is improper. The Kaddish is only for the Hazzan to recite; the congregation must listen silently and respond, without joining in the Hazzan's recitation.

Thinking Christian: Clear Theology for a Confusing World

Pastors are carrying more emotional and spiritual weight than most congregations realize—and many churches still treat counseling and discipleship as if they’re separate worlds. In this episode of the Thinking Christian Podcast, Dr. James Spencer is joined by Dr. Steve Stuhlreyer (Professor of Counselor Education at Columbia International University, former lead pastor) to talk about what it looks like when the church becomes a place of healing, relational care, and wise referral. Steve explains why the line between discipleship and counseling is often a false dichotomy. While some cases require trained clinical care (and sometimes medical collaboration), most people seeking help are what Steve calls the “worried well”—believers navigating grief, stress, anxiety, loneliness, transitions, and everyday burdens that can’t be carried alone. In those cases, what’s often missing isn’t a diagnosis—it’s relationship: a trusted person who can listen, walk with them, and help them grow in Christ. James and Steve also discuss the unique pressures pastors face: living in a fishbowl, constant availability, criticism, and the real loneliness that comes with leadership. Steve shares why many pastors won’t disclose struggles to denominational systems or even church members, and how chronic pressure can contribute to burnout, depression, anxiety, and in some situations, even trauma-like symptoms. The result is not just personal pain—it can limit a pastor’s ability to lead with spiritual health and long-term resilience. Finally, the conversation turns practical: What can churches do? Steve offers concrete advice for building a healthier ecosystem where lay care, discipleship, and counseling support work together—freeing trained counselors to focus on complex cases while the church becomes a genuine “hospital” for everyday burdens. They also touch on men’s ministry and why Christian manhood must be formed by Christlike strength, humility, and grace, not cultural machismo. Topics include: The overlap between counseling and discipleship Who truly needs clinical counseling—and who needs relational support Why pastors are often lonely (and afraid to be honest) How trauma and burnout can develop in ministry Practical ways elders and church leaders can care for pastors Men’s discipleship that builds strength without bravado Subscribe to our YouTube channel

In this installment, Rod Thomas explores the Jewish concepts of the Messiah, focusing on the three-messiah framework: Mashiyach Nagid, Mashiyach ben Yosef, and Mashiyach ben David. The discussion delves into Daniel's prophecy, Jewish tradition, and the identity of Yeshua (Jesus) as understood in Messianic faith. The episode also examines why mainstream Judaism rejects Yeshua as Messiah and how these messianic expectations shape both Jewish and Messianic perspectives. Key Topics Covered 1. Introduction and Context Greetings and setting: Recorded on the 3rd Day of the 11th biblical month, 6025 (Friday, January 16, 2026). Reflection on persecution, faith, and the hope found in Yeshua's teachings (Matthew 5:10-12; Ephesians 6:18; Matthew 5:44; Luke 6:28). 2. Why Judaism Rejects Yeshua as Messiah Historical grievances and theological differences. The role of Rabbinic expectations and interpretations in shaping Jewish messianic beliefs (Hebrews 2:3; Romans 3:2; Romans 11:25-26; Zechariah 12:10). 3. The Three Messiahs in Jewish Thought Mashiyach Nagid (Messiah the Prince) Mashiyach ben Yosef (Messiah, son of Joseph) Mashiyach ben David (Messiah, son of David) The episode focuses on Mashiyach Nagid, with future installments to cover the other two. 4. What is Mashiyach Nagid? Linguistic breakdown: "Mashiyach" means "Anointed One"; "Nagid" means "Prince" or "Leader." Scriptural foundation: Daniel 9:25-26 and its interpretations. The prophecy's implications for Jewish and Christian eschatology (1 Corinthians 13:12; Matthew 24:15-16). 5. The Meaning and Role of "Nagid" "Nagid" as prince, ruler, leader, commander, or official. Biblical examples: Saul, David, Solomon, Hezekiah, Abner, Azariah, and others (1 Samuel 9:16; 10:1; 13:14; 25:30; 2 Samuel 5:2; 6:21; 7:8; 1 Kings 1:35; 2 Kings 18:1; 2 Chronicles 31:13). 6. Mashiyach Nagid in Prophecy and Tradition The "transitional" leader concept: Anointed but not yet king. Comparison with "Melech" (King) and the Davidic Covenant (2 Samuel 7:8-16; Psalm 2:8-12; 2 Chronicles 13:5). 7. Messianic Traits and the Melchizedekian Order Psalm 110 as a foundational text for the dual role of king and priest. The Melchizedekian priesthood and its fulfillment in Yeshua (1 Peter 2:9; Daniel 2:44; Matthew 21:44; 1 Corinthians 15:24; Revelation 11:15). 8. Jewish Perspectives on Mashiyach Nagid Views of Rashi, Ibn Ezra, and Rambam (Maimonides) on the identity and role of Mashiyach Nagid. The Essenes and Qumran writings: Priestly and royal messiahs, "Prince of the Congregation" (Damascus Document, Rule of the Congregation, 11QMelchizedek). Apocryphal and Talmudic references: Suffering and kingly messiahs (1 Enoch, Jubilees, Talmud). 9. Christian and Messianic Interpretations Yeshua as the fulfillment of Daniel's prophecy and the persona of Mashiyach Nagid. The dual or double-fulfillment view of prophecy. Jewish objections to identifying Yeshua as all three messianic figures. 10. Application and Call to Discipleship The call for believers to imitate Yeshua's character traits: suffering, triumph, priesthood, kingship, exaltation, royal lineage, and spiritual warfare (Isaiah 53; Colossians 2:15; Psalm 110; Matthew 1:1; Zechariah 14:3; 1 Peter 2:9; Revelation 20:6; 2 Corinthians 10:4-6; Ephesians 6:12-14). Invitation to covenant relationship and Torah-honoring lifestyle (2 Corinthians 6:2; Isaiah 55:6-9). Full Text of Readings The Saint of the day is Saint Marianne Cope Saint Marianne Cope's Story Though leprosy scared off most people in 19th-century Hawaii, that disease sparked great generosity in the woman who came to be known as Mother Marianne of Molokai. Her courage helped tremendously to improve the lives of its victims in Hawaii, a territory annexed to the United States during her lifetime (1898). Mother Marianne's generosity and courage were celebrated at her May 14, 2005, beatification in Rome. She was a woman who spoke “the language of truth and love” to the world, said Cardinal José Saraiva Martins, prefect of the Congregation for Saints' Causes. Cardinal Martins, who presided at the beatification Mass in St. Peter's Basilica, called her life “a wonderful work of divine grace.” Speaking of her special love for persons suffering from leprosy, he said, “She saw in them the suffering face of Jesus. Like the Good Samaritan, she became their mother.” On January 23, 1838, a daughter was born to Peter and Barbara Cope of Hessen-Darmstadt, Germany. The girl was named after her mother. Two years later the Cope family emigrated to the United States and settled in Utica, New York. Young Barbara worked in a factory until August 1862, when she went to the Sisters of the Third Order of Saint Francis in Syracuse, New York. After profession in November of the next year, she began teaching at Assumption parish school. Saint Marianne Cope held the post of superior in several places and was twice the novice mistress of her congregation. A natural leader, three different times she was superior of St. Joseph's Hospital in Syracuse, where she learned much that would be useful during her years in Hawaii. Elected provincial in 1877, Saint Marianne Cope was unanimously re-elected in 1881. Two years later the Hawaiian government was searching for someone to run the Kakaako Receiving Station for people suspected of having leprosy. More than 50 religious communities in the United States and Canada were asked. When the request was put to the Syracuse sisters, 35 of them volunteered immediately. On October 22, 1883, Mother Marianne and six other sisters left for Hawaii where they took charge of the Kakaako Receiving Station outside Honolulu; on the island of Maui they also opened a hospital and a school for girls. In 1888, Mother Marianne and two sisters went to Molokai to open a home for “unprotected women and girls” there. The Hawaiian government was quite hesitant to send women for this difficult assignment; they need not have worried about Mother Marianne! On Molokai she took charge of the home that Saint Damien de Veuster had established for men and boys. Mother Marianne changed life on Molokai by introducing cleanliness, pride, and fun to the colony. Bright scarves and pretty dresses for the women were part of her approach. Awarded the Royal Order of Kapiolani by the Hawaiian government and celebrated in a poem by Robert Louis Stevenson, Mother Marianne continued her work faithfully. Her sisters have attracted vocations among the Hawaiian people and still work on Molokai. Saint Marianne Cope died on August 9, 1918, was beatified in 2005, and canonized seven years later. Her life is a model of grace, service, kindness, and love. Saint Marianne Cope: Pray for us! Reflection The government authorities were reluctant to allow Saint Marianne Cope to be a mother on Molokai. Thirty years of dedication proved their fears unfounded. God grants gifts regardless of human shortsightedness and allows those gifts to flower for the sake of the kingdom.Saint of the Day, Copyright Franciscan Media
