A Word from Our Outpost: Faithful Formation for Catholic Missionary Disciples on Prayer, Evangelization, Scripture, and Disci

Joseph Ratzinger, in a 2000 instruction from the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, wrote on some of the reasons we suffer. Joseph goes over them, and adds a couple for good measure!https://www.vatican.va/roman_curia/congregations/cfaith/documents/rc_con_cfaith_doc_20001123_istruzione_en.htmlAs noted in the episode, knowing that there are reasons for suffering may not lessen the suffering, but it may help with understanding the meaning of the suffering.Listen in to find out more! Stassi Cramm is the 1st female Prophet-President of the Community of Christ. I asked her to reflect back on the 1984 revelation that granted priesthood to women and her time as a lifelong member of Community of Christ. Was it hard? Check out our conversation... https://youtu.be/OjtLJ-FG988 Copyright © 2025 Gospel Tangents All Rights Reserved 0:00 Meet Stassi Cramm 4:32 Women Get Priesthood in 1984 Revelation 17:28 Diverse Agreement Look Back at 1984 Revelation on Women's Ordination Stassi Cramm, is the first female President of the Community of Christ. In 1984, was a young adult just starting her career in Southern California when the Community of Christ (then the RLDS Church) experienced a pivotal moment in its history: a revelation was presented that, among other things, opened the door for women to be ordained to the priesthood. For many, it was a moment of profound rightness. For others, it was a deeply divisive decision that would reshape the church for years to come. She recalls being "oblivious" to the years of study and conversation that led to this moment, as she had been busy with university and her new job. She wasn't at the 1984 World Conference where this new scripture, now Section 156 of the Community of Christ Doctrine and Covenants, was approved. News traveled slowly back then, through weekly long-distance phone calls and reports from conference attendees returning home. A Sense of Rightness Amidst Division When President Cramm finally read the new revelation, her reaction was immediate. "For me, there was this immediate sense of rightness to it and this sense of course! Why hadn't I thought of this before?" she recalls. She expresses a retrospective sense of shame that, as a woman in the male-dominated field of flight test engineering, she hadn't previously recognized the "lack of equal opportunity for leadership and service" in her own church. However, she soon learned of the "divisive nature" of the decision. People had walked out of the conference in protest, and the revelation sparked a schism within the church. Congregations split. Padlocks were put on church doors, and debates raged over property ownership. President Cramm's own congregation in Lancaster, California, handled the change well. But the wider church felt the strain. Personal Cost of a Calling Two years later, in 1986, Stassi Cramm received her first call to the priesthood. She remembers the vulnerability of that moment, standing before her stake conference as some members, including people she considered friends, raised their hands in opposition. "It's hard. You feel vulnerable anyways when you're accepting a call. And so when there's a group of people who raise their hand against you, intellectually you understand it. Emotionally you feel it". She credits the very first women who were ordained as her heroes, calling them "amazing path makers" who endured verbal criticism with humility and faithfulness. For herself, she chose to live in the difficult space of maintaining friendships with those who disagreed, recognizing that differing perspectives on whether the revelation was "of God" shouldn't sever their ability to be friends. This, she notes, is where Christlike love becomes a conscious choice, not a feeling—a choice to respect others' opinions even when you don't share them. Navigating Faithful Disagreement This experience highlights a core aspect of the Community of Christ's culture: navigating faithful disagreement. President Cramm later moved to a congregation in Las Vegas where a group remained opposed to women in the priesthood. The congregation found a way to coexist, making small accommodations for one another. For example, if a woman said the communion prayer, a male priesthood member would serve the sacrament to those who objected. These were hard conversations, but they were necessary to stay in community together. President Cramm shares a poignant memory of a conversation with a woma...

Friends of the Rosary,On September 27, the Catholic Church commemorates the feast of Saint Vincent de Paul. This 17th-century French priest is recognized as the patron of Catholic charities for his apostolic work for those in need.He was encouraged by the love of Christ to "organize permanent forms of service" to provide for the poor and marginalized, as Pope Benedict XVI noted. In 1605, five years after receiving ordination as a priest and as a tutor to students in Toulouse, during a sea voyage was captured by Turkish pirates and sold into slavery. His ordeal of captivity lasted until 1607, during which time the priest converted his owner to the Christian faith and escaped with him from Tunisia. Afterward, he spent time studying in Rome and moved with compassion for the poor, began undertaking missions and founding institutions to help them both materially and spiritually.Vincent established the Congregation of Priests of the Mission in 1625, as part of an effort to evangelize rural populations and foster vocations to remedy a priest shortage. He also worked with the future Saint Louise de Marillac to organize the Daughters of Charity, the first congregation of women religious whose consecrated life involved an extensive apostolate among the poor, the sick, and prisoners.Doctrinally, Vincent was a strong opponent of Jansenism, a theological heresy that denied the universality of God's love and discouraged reception of the Eucharist. He was also involved in the reform of several religious orders within France.Ave Maria!Come, Holy Spirit, come!To Jesus through Mary! Here I am, Lord; I come to do your will. Please give us the grace to respond with joy!+ Mikel Amigot w/ María Blanca | RosaryNetwork.com, New YorkEnhance your faith with the new Holy Rosary University app:Apple iOS | New! Rabbi Michael Shorb is a third generation Messianic Jew.  Even though he was raised in a believing home, his own personal faith and commitment to the L-rd didn't come until much later.  While in the service, he became friends with a believer and while visiting his friend's farm, he heard the friend's mother, a devout believer, praying for him and calling out his name before the Lord. God began to place people in Shorb's life who would pray for him, minister to him, and eventually he surrendered to the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. The Lord called him to reach Russian speaking Jews.  He went to Kyiv and he traveled to Ukraine four times a year, where he became a member of the world's largest Messianic congregation in Kyiv.  While in Ukraine, Rabbi Michael went into prisons and to rehab centers.  He experienced the casting out of demons and those who were instantly healed from drug addiction.  But the Lord showed him that his true calling was to be in his own home, near Baltimore, Maryland.Rabbi Michael had visited Israel and had pondered making Aliyah, but he clearly heard the Lord tell him to go home to his people in Maryland, where there are approximately 250,000 Russian-speaking Jews.  The Lord impressed on him that if all the believing Jews left, who would teach his people?Rabbi Michael's Congregation, Beit Chesed (House of Mercy), is located in Baltimore County in Reisterstown, Maryland.

In “An Orthodox Jewish Congregation Keeps on (Food) Truckin' in Birmingham,” Gravy producer Margaret Weinberg Norman documents the story of JJ's Sandwich Shop, a glatt kosher deli on wheels operated by the oldest Orthodox Jewish congregation in Birmingham, Alabama. In the Magic City, food trucks are familiar, but both kosher restaurants and authentic delis are rare. Knesseth Israel, founded in 1889, is filling both gaps while exploring a surprising new way to sustain its historic congregation. Like many small Southern synagogues, Knesseth Israel faced dwindling membership, financial pressures, and questions about its future. After selling their synagogue building and parting ways with their Rabbi, the congregation chose a bold new path: to open a business. Knesseth Israel's restaurant venture began with a vegetarian crepe enterprise called Holy Crepe, and through experimentation evolved into JJ's, which specializes today in homemade corned beef and pastrami. On our listening journey we meet Beth Scherer Smokey, a longtime member and volunteer who led the congregation through this transformation. We also meet chef Nathan Lichenstein. Raised in an Orthodox Hasidic family in New York, Nathan once ran a glatt kosher food truck in the city and cooked for thousands of pilgrims annually in Ukraine. His move to Birmingham brought not only culinary expertise but also new energy to Knesseth Israel. His passion for good, kosher food has made JJ's both a crowd-pleaser and a point of pride. This episode places JJ's within the wider history of Birmingham's Jewish foodscape, once clustered along Fourth Avenue, overlapping with the heart of the historic Black commercial district and the old Jewish neighborhood. Community historian Barbara Bonfield recalls memories of borscht, kosher butchers, and the neighborhood life that sustained Jewish Birmingham in the early to mid-20th century. This story also speaks to larger trends. In 2022, a Pew Study projected that by 2070, “nones” (those unaffiliated with organized religion) would outnumber Christians, who made up 64% of the national population at the time. Against this backdrop, Knesseth Israel's story offers lessons for other small faith communities seeking to adapt their models to demographic realities. JJ's isn't just a source of revenue; it's also a form of outreach, connecting across Birmingham's Jewish and broader communities alike. Though they've reduced their footprint, JJ's has helped Knesseth Israel gain visibility both within and beyond the Birmingham Jewish community. This is a story at the intersection of tradition and innovation, faith and food—one that shows how a small but mighty congregation found its future not by clinging to the past, but by rolling it out on a food truck. Overview why church leadership matters,  its God-ordained roles in teaching, correcting, sending, and encouraging; the unyielding accountability to Scripture over congregational whims  the necessity of ongoing biblical evaluation; and a snapshot of biblical church  "And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ" (Ephesians 4:11-12, ESV).  "The true shepherd is one who leads the flock by going before it, not by driving it from behind." – Charles Spurgeon   Section 1: Why Church Leadership and Its Structure Are So Important Key Statement: Church leadership isn't optional—it's God's blueprint for unity, growth, and protection against chaos. Without it, the church drifts into individualism or cultural compromise. Points: Leadership provides direction in a fallen world, preventing division  1 Corinthians 1:10: "I appeal to you, brothers, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree, and that there be no divisions among you". Structure ensures accountability and order, mirroring God's order in creation and the Trinity. Historical context: The early church exploded in growth under apostolic leadership (Acts 2:42-47), but faltered when structure was ignored (Corinth's factions in 1 Corinthians). "Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they are keeping watch over your souls, as those who will have to give an account" (Hebrews 13:17, ESV) leaders as soul-watchmen.  "The church is not a debating society but a body under authority." – John Stott  highlighting the need for structured submission for spiritual flourishing. Share a brief anecdote of a church thriving under strong leadership vs. one fractured by leaderless drift. Section 2: The Roles of Church Leadership – Teaching, Correcting, Sending, and Encouraging. Teaching – Grounding in Truth Leaders proclaim sound doctrine to build mature believers.  "You then, my child, be strengthened by the grace that is in Christ Jesus, and what you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses entrust to faithful men, who will be able to teach others also" (2 Timothy 2:1-2, ESV).  "The pulpit is the Thermopylae of Christendom." – J.C. Ryle  underscoring teaching as the church's frontline defense. Correcting – Restoring the Wayward Gentle yet firm rebuke to prevent sin's spread, fostering holiness.  "All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness" (2 Timothy 3:16, ESV). "Correction does much, but encouragement does more. Encouragement after censure is as the sun after a shower." – John Wesley  balancing correction with grace. Sending – Equipping for Mission Leaders commission members outward, advancing the gospel. "While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, 'Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them'" (Acts 13:2, ESV) the Antioch church sending Paul and Barnabas.  "The church exists for the salvation of the world." – Lesslie Newbigin,  reminding leaders to propel the church beyond its walls. Encouraging – Building Up the Weary Sustaining hope amid trials, spurring one another on. "Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing" (1 Thessalonians 5:11, ESV). "A word of encouragement during a failure is worth more than an hour of praise after success." – Unknown Which role have you seen most in your church? Least? These roles are powerful, but they're only effective when leaders anchor them in something unchanging Leadership's Accountability – To the Gospel and Bible, Not Congregational Feelings  True leaders serve God first, resisting the temptation to pander for approval, which dilutes the gospel. Points: Accountability to Christ ensures fidelity to truth, even if unpopular Galatians 1:10: "For am I now seeking the approval of man, or of God? Or am I trying to please man? If I were still trying to please man, I would not be a servant of Christ". Dangers of emotion-driven decisions: Leads to moral relativism and church splits. Paul's farewell charge  Acts 20:24: "But I do not account my life of any value nor as precious to myself, if only I may finish my course and the ministry that I received from the Lord Jesus". "Preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with complete patience and teaching" (2 Timothy 4:2, ESV) unwavering proclamation. "The pastor must be a man of conviction, not convenience." – A.W. Tozer warning against crowd-pleasing. Have you witnessed leaders prioritizing feelings over the Gospel?" Section 4: The Crucial Need for Constant Evaluation of Traditions and Practices  Churches must regularly test their customs against Scripture to avoid idolatry of tradition, ensuring relevance and purity. Points: Traditions can ossify into legalism if unchecked  Mark 7:8: "You leave the commandment of God and hold to the tradition of men". Benefits: Renewal, unity, and gospel-centeredness. Model: The Bereans Acts 17:11: "Now these Jews were more noble than those in Thessalonica; they received the word with all eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see if these things were so".  "Test everything; hold fast what is good" (1 Thessalonians 5:21, ESV).  "Tradition is the living faith of the dead; traditionalism is the dead faith of the living." – Jaroslav Pelikan  distinguishing helpful heritage from harmful habit. Encourage listeners to start a "Berean group" in their church for verse-by-verse checks.   Section 5: A Brief Overview of Biblical Church Structure  The New Testament envisions a simple, plural, servant-hearted model: Plurality of elders (overseers/pastors) for spiritual oversight, deacons for practical service, all under Christ's headship. Roles ( we will break these down in upcoming Episodes further): Elders: Plural, qualified men leading by teaching and example  (1 Timothy 5:17: "Let the elders who rule well be considered worthy of double honor, especially those who labor in preaching and teaching" Deacons: Servants handling logistics to free elders for prayer and word (1 Timothy 3:8-13). Congregation's Role: Active participation in discipline, giving, and mutual edification (Matthew 18:15-17; 1 Corinthians 14:26). No CEO-style hierarchy; mutual accountability and local autonomy. "Pay careful attention to yourselves and to all the flock, in which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to care for the church of God" (Acts 20:28, ESV). "The New Testament knows nothing of a one-man ministry." – John Piper  advocating elder plurality. Does your church match this?

Church bells still ring across the United Kingdom—often to thinner congregations. In this episode, host Rosalynde Welch speaks with filmmaker and BYU media-arts professor Tom Russell, the Maxwell Institute's newest associate and a two-year fellow, about his mini-series Congregation—a thoughtful portrait of worship in the UK. Rather than tallying decline, Russell turns the camera toward those who still choose to gather: students and vicars, parish choirs and families. Together they ask: Why do people still come? What do they find here that's hard to find elsewhere? Along the way, they explore how art, nature, and beauty—from green fields to stained glass—can deepen our connection with God and renew covenant-shaped community. The fellowship, purpose, and hope many discover at church remain vibrantly alive.

This is a Grave Talks CLASSIC EPISODE! Deep in rural Kansas, hidden within a near-ghost town, stands a building frozen in time — a haunted church built in 1904. With its towering spires reaching toward the heavens and a presence that dominates the empty prairie, it looks like something out of a Gothic novel. But behind its weathered brick walls lies more than just history. It holds stories… and spirits. For more than a century, this sacred space has witnessed life's most defining moments: baptisms, weddings, and tearful funerals. The prayers, laughter, and grief of generations seem to cling to the air, embedding themselves into the very wood of the pews. Though the congregation has long since vanished, many believe the faithful few never truly left. Now, paranormal investigator Robert Garcia and his team have taken on the challenge of restoring this abandoned landmark. Their mission isn't only about saving a piece of Kansas history — it's about resurrecting a church where the dead still gather. While repairing the structure, they've encountered chilling activity: whispers echoing down the aisles, phantom footsteps crossing the altar, and shadowy figures slipping between pews as though Sunday service never ended. Is this activity a residual haunting, the lingering echoes of decades past? Or are these intelligent spirits, former parishioners still tied to the house of worship they once called home? The answers lie within the walls of this forgotten church, where faith and fear intertwine. This is Part Two of our conversation. #HauntedChurch #KansasHauntings #RealGhostStories #HauntedPlaces #Ghosts #ParanormalActivity #AbandonedChurch #HauntedKansas #ParanormalPodcast #TrueHaunting #GhostStory #HauntedHistory Love real ghost stories? The COVID-19 crisis pushed churches to reimagine everything from Sunday worship to committee meetings, often thrusting them onto unfamiliar digital ground. Navigating livestreams, Zoom calls, and online communion, ministry leaders have had to ask: What does it mean to truly be the body of Christ in a hybrid or even fully online world? In this episode, Michael Huerter, author of The Hybrid Congregation, talks about the theological and practical implications of digital ministry, how technology is shaping Christian community today, and what it looks like to do incarnational ministry in a time when “embodiment” often includes both physical and digital presence.THIS EPISODE'S HIGHLIGHTS INCLUDE:Michael Huerter identifies the technological revolution as a challenge that forces churches to quickly adapt, especially accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic.Churches adapted rapidly to online worship out of necessity, often improvising by streaming or recording services for the first time.Michael Huerter describes the struggle of clergy to reflect theologically about worship changes while managing weekly ministry demands. The shift to online ministry required pastors to find new ways to foster belonging and community amid isolation.Integrating online technology into church life raises theological questions but can also expand accessibility and connection.Michael Huerter explains that congregations faced difficult questions around sacraments, like communion, during virtual services and responded differently based on tradition.Worship communities discovered that virtual meetings, such as board meetings and Bible studies, created new conveniences and altered expectations for gathering together.Online ministry allows for broader participation, particularly for those unable to attend in person due to distance, weather, or health.Michael Huerter discusses the tension between the benefits of hybrid models and the losses in personal connection that come from shifting meetings and worship online.Participating in both physical and online ministry offers unique strengths and limitations in forming authentic community. The theological call to be incarnational does not require rejecting technology; rather, ministry can thoughtfully incorporate digital tools as part of discipleship.Michael Huerter pushes back against the idea that digital practices conflict with incarnational theology, highlighting historical uses of technology in church growth.Passive participation in online worship, such as listening to music or liturgy, still engages the body and spirit and remains spiritually meaningful.Michael Huerter urges pastors to approach technology with a people-first mindset, focusing on community needs rather than pursuing reach or production value for its own sake.Discernment, curiosity, and pastoral care are key for churches navigating ongoing technological changes and competing values in ministry.RELEVANT RESOURCES AND LINKS:Books mentioned:The Hybrid Congregation, by Michael Huerter131: Spiritual Leadership in the Digital Space, with Laura MurraySend me a text! In this episode I sit down with Andrew and Kara Root to talk about their new book, A Pilgrimage Into Letting Go. Written out of their journey walking St. Cuthbert's Way with their children, the book reflects on parenting, pastoring, and the hard but necessary work of releasing control. Together we explore why modern life pushes us to manage every detail, how uncontrollability can actually be a gift, and what it looks like to see parenting as a pilgrimage. Along the way, we talk about prayer as listening, the difference between being a tourist and a pilgrim, and the ways God encounters us when we surrender to presence. This is a conversation about trust, family, and faith that invites us to walk with open hands and open hearts.Andrew Root is the Carrie Olson Baalson Professor of Youth and Family Ministry at Luther Seminary, USA. He writes and researches in areas of theology, ministry, culture and younger generations.  His most recent books are Evangelism in an Age of Despair (Baker, 2025), The Church in an Age of Secular Mysticisms (Baker, 2023), Churches and the Crisis of Decline (Baker, 2022), The Congregation in a Secular Age (Baker, 2021), and The Pastor in a Secular Age: Ministry to People Who No Longer Need God (Baker, 2019). In addition, he serves as theologian in residence for Youthfront. Rev. Kara K. Root is the author of The Deepest Belonging (2021) and Receiving This Life: (2023). Pastor of Lake Nokomis Presbyterian Church in Minneapolis, MN, a Christian community that shapes its life around worship, hospitality and Sabbath rest, she is a trained Spiritual Director and Certified Educator in the PCUSA.  Being mom to two intriguing teenagers (and a sweet dog), and wife and proofreader to a wily theologian, spices up her vocational calling and keeps her fully immersed in life. She has written for Sparkhouse, Working Preacher, Christian Century, Christianity Today, Faith and Leadership, Patheos and more. When people returned to the land of Israel from Babylonia after that exile, they brought an offering on behalf of the people from the era of Tzedkiyahu. But all of that generation and long died! Normally, a designated sin-offering that isn't offered before the person offering it dies is left alone to get a blemish. But for a public offering, that doesn't work. But an inference can be made from the he-goat of Rosh Chodesh, in terms of it being a communal offering. But maybe the cases aren't comparable, say, if nobody died before the offering was made? Maybe eglah arufah is a good comparison? Some of the returning members of the community were actually still alive at this time - survivors from the time of the First Temple, which was certainly a sad time for them, but they were able to offer the sin-offering. Were they the minority or the majority? Also, the case where one of the public dies - when all the people must bring the offering. Now what? And so a search for parallet categories begins.
