Wir springen in dieser Folge ins Jahr 1613. Noch im jungen geeinten Japan versucht der mächtige Daimyō Date Masamune Handelsbeziehungen mit den Überseegebieten Spaniens aufzubauen. Zu diesem Behuf schickt er eine Gesandtschaft nach Europa, die nicht nur Handel, sondern auch neue christliche Missionare in sein Gebiet bringen sollen. Doch schon bald zeigt sich, dass Spanien wenig Interesse daran hat, die Kontrolle über seine Kolonialgebiete aufzuweichen. Und auch kurz nach Aufbruch der Gesandtschaft wird die Situation für christliche Missionare in Japan immer gefährlicher. The federal case against JP Miller charges him alone. But Mica Miller told anyone who would listen that it wasn't just her husband. Court filings describe members of Solid Rock Church who allegedly helped track and harass her during the years prosecutors say Miller waged a cyberstalking campaign against his estranged wife.Miller was indicted in December 2025 — one count of cyberstalking, one count of false statements to federal investigators. The allegations span November 2022 through Mica's death in April 2024 and include tracking devices on her vehicle, daily contact numbering in the dozens, financial interference, tire damage, and an intimate image posted online. Miller has pleaded not guilty, denies the abuse claims, and has not been charged in Mica's death. She was thirty. She had filed for divorce two days before she died. Her death was ruled a suicide. His trial is set for October 2026.Solid Rock Church is gone. Miller sold the $2.1 million property, and the building is slated for demolition. He now preaches to roughly fifteen people at temporary venues with his third wife leading worship. In this week's Team Never Quit podcast, Marcus and Melanie host Sister Madeleine Marie and other representatives from The Daughters of Mary Mother of Our Savior, a congregation of traditional Catholic Sisters devoted to a life of prayer, service, and religious formation. Founded in the summer of 1984, the Congregation's motherhouse, St. Joseph's Novitiate, is located in upstate New York, where young women discerning religious life are formed spiritually and practically as they prepare to become Daughters of Mary.Life at St. Joseph's Novitiate follows a semi-contemplative rhythm centered on both prayer and work. Candidates begin their journey as postulants, living within the community for nine months while learning its daily routine, expectations, and spiritual life. Those who are received into the Novitiate are given the religious habit and white veil of a novice and begin two years of deeper formation, studying the rules, constitutions, and spirit of the Congregation. At the conclusion of that period, those who are called to continue may make their first profession of vows.Today, however, the Congregation is facing an encouraging challenge: growth.Over the past fifteen years, the Daughters of Mary Mother of Our Savior has nearly doubled in size. New vocations continue to come, but the Sisters have now reached the limits of their present convent. Without additional space, the Congregation may soon be unable to welcome new postulants who feel called to religious life.That need has led to an important building project now underway—a new convent designed to provide room for the growing community and for future generations of Sisters.The project is being completed in several major phases.The first phase focuses on bringing the new building from the ground up and enclosing it to the roof. This includes planning, excavation, foundation walls, steel framing, floors, and completion of the exterior shell.The next phase involves installing the essential mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems required to make the convent functional and safe. HVAC, plumbing, electrical service, fire protection, testing, and inspections will all be critical parts of this stage.The final phase will transform the structure into a true home for the Sisters. Interior framing, drywall, painting, flooring, fixtures, and final finishes will complete the living and formation spaces where future postulants, novices, and professed Sisters will pray, work, learn, and live together.This building project represents far more than bricks, steel, wiring, and walls. The people closest to Mica Miller's marriage were the same people who enabled its alleged dynamics. Solid Rock Church in Myrtle Beach was JP Miller's platform and Mica Miller's community. When Mica began telling police she was being stalked, tracked, and harassed, the congregation did not rally around her. They closed ranks around JP.Mica filed police reports describing GPS surveillance, razor blades in her tires, and a man she said she was afraid of. She told friends she was living in an invisible cage. On April 27, 2024, she was found dead at Lumber River State Park in North Carolina. Her death was ruled a suicide. She had served JP with divorce papers two days earlier. She was 30 years old.JP Miller preached at her memorial service. He spoke about her body from the pulpit. Witnesses called it possessive and chilling.Federal prosecutors have charged JP Miller with cyberstalking Mica and making false statements to investigators. The indictment alleges he contacted her more than 50 times in a single day. 1773 was the year in which the Society of Jesus ceased to exist. Pressured by European leaders, Pope Clement XIV issued a Papal brief formally suppressing the Jesuits worldwide. 41 years would pass before, in 1814, Pope Pius VII formally restored the Society. In those intervening years, a number of important questions emerged that would shape the Jesuits, the Church and the world. Arguably one of those pressing questions, one that pointed to the foundation of the Ignatian charism, was this: What would become of the Spiritual Exercises? Countless lives had been changed thanks to Ignatius' spiritual wisdom, and the Church knew that to lose that wisdom—to lose the Exercises—along with the Jesuits would be disastrous. The world needed the Exercises. So, in the wake of the Suppression of the Society of Jesus, different religious order emerged to carry on the mantle of the Ignatian tradition. One such order—the Oblates of the Virgin Mary, founded by Venerable Bruno Lanteri who himself was formed by Jesuits—took it upon themselves to continue offering the Spiritual Exercises. Their work and mission continued, even after the restoration of the Society of Jesus. And in fact, one of the most preeminent writers on Ignatian discernment—Fr. Timothy Gallagher, OMV—is our guest today. And as you'll hear, he stresses the essential work that is the ministry of the Exercises, and how the Oblates and the Jesuits continue to work together in this mission. The Exercises, after all, are a gift to all of God's people. Fr. Gallagher has a wonderful new book out from Ignatius Press that underlines this point. It's called “Thinking Like a Saint: Discernment of Spirits in the Catholic Tradition.” In it, he walks readers through Ignatius' 14 Rules for Discernment. But he does so by grounding each rule in the wisdom of saints who came long before or well after Ignatius. In so doing, Fr. Gallagher reminds us that Ignatius' great contribution was giving language to our shared human experience—and God's Spirit at work therein. Fr. Gallagher was ordained to the priesthood in 1979 as a member of the Congregation of the Oblates of the Virgin Mary. In 1983, he obtained his doctorate from The Pontifical Gregorian University, and became a spiritual director and retreat leader. He has taught at St. John's Seminary, Brighton, and Our Lady of Grace Seminary Residence, Boston, both in Massachusetts. In 2015, Father Gallagher accepted the St. Ignatius Chair for Spiritual Formation at St. John Vianney Theological Seminary in Denver. He has written over twenty books on spiritual themes, published articles in Catholic periodicals, appears frequently on Catholic television, and records many podcasts, radio interviews, series on YouTube, and virtual events used throughout the English-speaking Catholic world. September is National Recovery Month. It's observed nationally to raise awareness about addiction and mental health and celebrate people in recovery. Pastor Seth Perry of Elim Lutheran Church in Scandia has spent the past few years trying to reduce mental health stigma in his community. He told MPR News in 2024 that opening up about his own struggles with mental health changed the way he approached his work as a pastor. Since then, his congregation has created a mental wellness outreach committee, and he's launched a podcast about mental health and recovery. He joined Minnesota Now to share what he's doing for recovery month.

This sermon reframes our understanding of the Ten Commandments, inviting us to see them not as a rigid list of laws, but as God's life-giving covenant words—His instruction and guidance for a relationship with His people. Tracing the story from Israel's enslavement in Egypt to their miraculous rescue and arrival at Mount Sinai, we learn that God saved them first, and then offered this covenant. The Hebrew word "Torah," often translated as "law," actually means "instruction" or "teaching," and Exodus itself refers to these as "10 Words" that bring life, not just accountability.The core of this covenant, found in Exodus 19 and 20, is God's promise: if Israel would follow these words, they would become His "precious possession," a "kingdom of priests," and a "holy nation." This means their purpose was to represent God's kingdom to the world, allowing others to look at their lives and understand what God's kingdom is truly about. This is a foundational relationship, like marriage vows or an adoption, where God clearly lays out His expectations not to control, but to guide His people into wholeness and purpose.For us as followers of Jesus, this call to represent God's kingdom continues. The sermon draws a powerful connection to Romans 12, where Paul encourages believers to be "transformed by the renewing of your minds" rather than conformed to the world (Romans 12:1-2). This transformation leads to practical expressions of love and peace, such as showing genuine affection, hating evil, honoring others, being enthusiastic in service, contributing to needs, welcoming strangers, and blessing those who harass us (Romans 12:9-18). This "peace" is not merely the absence of conflict, but a restoration of all things to their proper place.Ultimately, God paid the penalty for our inability to perfectly keep His covenant, offering grace as a free gift. We are invited to live into our identity as children of God, adopted into His family, and to embrace the vocation of representing His kingdom here on earth. Netflix's "Death of the Pastor's Wife" gave Mica Miller's closest friends a platform to say publicly what they allege she endured during her marriage to Myrtle Beach pastor John-Paul Miller — and the accusations are staggering.Congregation member Bruna Pabon alleges Mica described relentless daily demands, enforced through sleep deprivation and threats. Friends say JP pressured Mica into taking testosterone that damaged her voice — the gift that made her Solid Rock Church's worship leader. The documentary plays sermon footage where JP preaches that a wife who refuses her husband has committed a sin equal to the worst offenses he can name.Attorney Regina Ward alleges JP forced his own psychiatric prescription on Mica, including putting pills in her food. No prescription for Mica existed in any medical record that surfaced during the investigation, Ward states. Her siblings allege JP had her committed against her will and took possession of her car, phone, and laptop — which they say contained private images later posted online according to the federal indictment.JP Miller has pleaded not guilty to cyberstalking and making false statements. His October 2026 trial has been delayed four times since indictment. He married Suzie Skinner, a church member whose quadriplegic veteran husband died in a pool in 2021. Image: Sandro Botticelli, 1480, Pope Sixtus II Popes names Sixtus (originally Xystus): St Sixtus I 117 or 119 to 126 or 128 Martyr St Sixtus II 257 to 258 Famous martyr, in the Roman Canon St Sixtus III 432 to 440 Sixtus IV 1471 to 1484 Sistine Chapel named for him Sixtus V 1585 to 1590 Great reformer of the Papal States and Curia   Sixtus or Xystus I: the earliest pope we have covered so far, in the very uncertain period of the second century, during the reign of Hadrian. The chronicles that look back to this time do not agree on the dates of his ministry and otherwise only record a few vague details. He is supposed to have placed the chanting of the Sanctus at its present place in the Mass, right after the Preface; he is also recorded to have been martyred, although nothing seems to be preserved about the event.   Sixtus / Xystus II: pope during the persecution of Valerian in the third century. His brief reign saw a reconciliation with St. Cyprian and churches in Africa and Asia Minor, which had been requiring heretics to be rebaptized. The persecution was stepped up in August 258 and Pope Xystus was beheaded with four deacons in a cemetery where he was celebrating Mass; two more deacons were executed the same day; the last and most famous deacon, Lawrence, survived a few days to be captured and according to legend roasted to death. Pope Sixtus to this day is mentioned in the full version of the Roman Canon of the Eucharistic Prayer.   Sixtus / Xystus III: prior to his election as pope, a correspondent with St. Augustine. Approved the acts of the Council of Ephesus and rededicated the restored basilica of St. Mary Major. This historical period included continued disputes with both Pelagians and Nestorians. Defended and maintained papal supremacy over Illyricum. Succeeded by Leo the Great.   Sixtus IV: pope of the late fifteenth century. Born of poor parents; became a Franciscan and a notable theologian. Unfortunately once pope he became a traditional nepotist and involved the Papal States in wars to put his nephews in charge of Florence and Ferrara, and wars of this nature continued to absorb papal attention through the beginning of the Reformation. He opposed and annulled the decrees of the Council of Constance and was successful in turning the Church away from conciliarism. He was a great builder and is said to have made Rome much more livable, helping continue its recovery from the Avignon period of the papacy. He reorganized and essentially refounded the Vatican Library and most famously built the Sistine Chapel.   Sixtus V: also of poor birth and Dalmatian ancestry, whose family had fled from Turkish expansion; supposedly a swineherd as a boy. Also became a Franciscan and rose to prominence in that order, also for a time appointed to the Inquisition in Venice. Accompanied the future Gregory XIII to Spain to investigate claims that the Archbishop of Toledo was a heretic, and the two did not get along. During Gregory XIII's long reign he was sidelined. Similarly to his time as an inquisitor, he proved to be an effective but severe and even brutal ruler of the Papal States. He had perhaps ten thousand to thirty thousand brigands to deal with and nearly exterminated them. He put the papal finances in order and built many useful and beautiful buildings, but seems to have taxed the economy into a stupor. Of particular significance, he created fifteen Congregations to organize the cardinals and created much of the current structure of the Curia. He caused editions of the Septuagint and the Vulgate to be printed, although his edition of the Vulgate is not considered to be of high quality, and even at the time was recalled and corrected in 1592 due to many errors already recognized. He was supposedly on the point of forcing the Jesuits to change their name from the "Society of Jesus" and change some of the rules of the order when he died. For a change he was actually notably non-nepotistic.   Why Sixtus VI: A cardinal would take this name in order to revive the memory of Sixtus II (and I), recognizing that the Church in so many parts of the world faces persecution on a massive scale. That by itself might be enough. The early modern era Popes Sixtus, especially Sixtus V, might contribute to the idea especially if 1) the cardinal is a Franciscan and 2) he plans to address the Vatican finances and the organization of the Curia at large.

Full Text of Readings Wednesday of the Twentieth Week in Ordinary Time Lectionary: 421 The Saint of the day is Saint John Eudes Saint John Eudes' Story How little we know where God's grace will lead. Born on a farm in northern France, John died at 78 in the next “county” or department. In that time, he was a religious, a parish missionary, founder of two religious communities, and a great promoter of the devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary. John joined the religious community of the Oratorians and was ordained a priest at 24. During severe plagues in 1627 and 1631, he volunteered to care for the stricken in his own diocese. Lest he infect his fellow religious, during the plague he lived in a huge cask in the middle of a field. At age 32, John became a parish missionary. His gifts as a preacher and confessor won him great popularity. He preached over 100 parish missions, some lasting from several weeks to several months. In his concern with the spiritual improvement of the clergy, John realized that the greatest need was for seminaries. He had permission from his general superior, the bishop, and even Cardinal Richelieu to begin this work, but the succeeding general superior disapproved. After prayer and counsel, John decided it was best to leave the religious community. That same year John founded a new community, ultimately called the Eudists—the Congregation of Jesus and Mary–devoted to the formation of the clergy by conducting diocesan seminaries. The new venture, while approved by individual bishops, met with immediate opposition, especially from Jansenists and some of his former associates. John founded several seminaries in Normandy, but was unable to get approval from Rome—partly, it was said, because he did not use the most tactful approach. In his parish mission work, John was disturbed by the sad condition of prostitutes who sought to escape their miserable life. Temporary shelters were found, but arrangements were not satisfactory. A certain Madeleine Lamy, who had cared for several of the women, one day said to him, “Where are you off to now? To some church, I suppose, where you'll gaze at the images and think yourself pious. And all the time what is really wanted of you is a decent house for these poor creatures.” The words, and the laughter of those present, struck deeply within him. The result was another new religious community, called the Sisters of Charity of the Refuge. John Eudes is probably best known for the central theme of his writings: Jesus as the source of holiness; Mary as the model of the Christian life. His devotion to the Sacred Heart and to the Immaculate Heart led Pope Pius XI to declare him the father of the liturgical cult of the Hearts of Jesus and Mary. Reflection Holiness is the wholehearted openness to the love of God. It is visibly expressed in many ways, but the variety of expression has one common quality: concern for the needs of others. In John's case, those who were in need were plague-stricken people, ordinary parishioners, those preparing for the priesthood, prostitutes, and all Christians called to imitate the love of Jesus and his mother.Saint of the Day, Copyright Franciscan Media

Full Text of Readings Monday of the Twentieth Week in Ordinary Time Lectionary: 419 The Saint of the day is Saint Joan of the Cross Saint Joan of the Cross' Story An encounter with a shabby old woman many dismissed as insane prompted Joan of the Cross to dedicate her life to the poor. For Joan, who had a reputation as a businesswoman intent on monetary success, this was a significant conversion. Born in 1666, in Anjou, France, Joan of the Cross worked in the family business—a small shop near a religious shrine—from an early age. After her parents' death she took over the shop. She quickly became known for her greediness and insensitivity to the beggars who often came seeking help. That was until she was touched by the strange woman who claimed she was on intimate terms with the deity. Joan of the Cross, who had always been devout, even scrupulous, became a new person. She began caring for needy children. Then the poor, elderly, and sick came to her. Over time, she closed the family business so she could devote herself fully to good works and penance. She went on to found what came to be known as the Congregation of Saint Anne of Providence. It was then she took the religious name of Joan of the Cross. By the time of her death in 1736 she had founded 12 religious houses, hospices, and schools. Pope John Paul II canonized her in 1982. Reflection The downtown areas of most major cities hold a population of “street people.” Well-dressed folks usually avoid making eye contact, probably for fear of being asked for a handout. That was Joan of the Cross' attitude until the day one of them touched her heart. Most people thought the old woman was crazy, but she put Joan on the road to sainthood.
