Today on Mea Culpa, I'm replaying an episode from last July featuring my conversation with Norm Eisen, attorney, author, legal analyst, Senior Fellow at the Brookings Institution, founder of Democracy Defenders Action, and co-founder of The Contrarian. While chaos rains down on America and the world because of Donald Trump, I thought it was worth doing a temperature check on where we were just one year ago. At the time, Trump was still fighting it out on the campaign trail, and the biggest outrage was Judge Eileen Cannon's dismissal of the Mar-a-Lago documents case. Fast forward to now, and we're facing far more dangerous threats: ICE rounding people up in the streets, Trump's effort to shred the Constitution, and the looming threat of new wars. This conversation is a stark reminder of how far we've fallen, what's still at stake, and what we can do to save our country. Becoming an enduring part of pop culture doesn't necessarily mean your movie is good. So what's the verdict on THE BODYGUARD? Is there anything to it beyond that banger of a song and the undeniable chemistry between Costner and Houston? Did it get shortchanged when it only won one MTV Movie Award, or was it deserving of its multiple Razzie nominations? If you've ever wondered why 90s kids are SO dramatic about their love lives, you can put the blame on Baz Luhrmann's ROMEO + JULIET. The overblown modernization of Willy Shakes' teeny-bopper romance was a big hit with audiences and critics, with a fresh Tomatometer score of 74% - so that means Alex & Julio will take it down a few notches. You either get on Shakespeare's wavelength or you don't. But maybe an extreme approach to The Bard's stories can help? It's likely Baz Luhrmann's ROMEO + JULIET converted many romantics into fans of the play - even if they might not have stuck around for any other Shakespeare pieces. After the horrific assassination of a Democratic state legislator in Minnesota, President Trump at first correctly stressed that such violence is absolutely intolerable. But then he uncorked a long, vile, unhinged tirade on Truth Social, threatening to unleash ICE raids more directly on Democratic cities while denouncing them as radical, dangerous and “sick.” Coming after the assassination, this was almost akin to a call for more targeting of Democrats and liberals. It's no accident this came right after we saw enormous outpourings of peaceful “No Kings” protests across the country. The contrast between these and Trump's North Korean-style military parade (not to mention the assassination) amounted to a fiasco for Trump. As Kim Scheppele, a scholar of authoritarianism, noted in a good piece for The Contrarian, a big story about this weekend's events was the spectacle of peaceful dissent meeting menace from Trump-aligned forces. We talked to Scheppele about how political violence is overwhelmingly aligned in this country with the MAGA right, and why we're now sliding into what she calls the “danger zone.” Looking for More from the DSR Network? Feels like a Father's Day episode what with weaponry gone awry, novelty shirts made from petroleum products, and Caddyshack references. PCA hits them high and low, and Woody hits them where they don't usually go. Cutch passes Clemente, Manny sneaks up on 2000, and we've got more bfs on the IL than the bench. The Contreras brothers (Contrarians?) do something rare. Kiké speaks out even though the LAD do not, and we note how women's leagues do not hesitate to take a stand. And we crosstrain by buying Immigrant City FC shirts. MLB players speak out about how sports betting has changed fan interactions for the worse. Those nice BOS newlyweds give the Pope a CWS cap and now you know what the regulation Pope headgear is called and why there's a sunroof in the Popemobile. He thinks the Fed will reiterate their data dependent, patient stance. He talks about the “contrarian bullish signals” he sees in the market, but thinks high interest rates and stagflation remain the biggest risks.======== Schwab Network ========Empowering every investor and trader, every market day. News organizations have been credulously amplifying the White House's spin that sending troops into Los Angeles is great politics for President Trump. But the evidence isn't cooperating. On Tuesday, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt lost her temper amid tough questioning about Trump's threat to unleash “force” on protesters. She snapped that one reporter had asked a “stupid question,” and seethed angrily at a second reporter's legitimate query, showing how weak the White House's arguments on this have truly become. And a new Quinnipiac poll finds Trump's approval tanking, crucially including on immigration. We talked to Jennifer Rubin, editor-in-chief of The Contrarian, who has a new piece arguing that California is a test run for Trump. She explains why the media needs to do better at conveying just how unpopular Trump's authoritarian tactics truly are—and why failing to do so could embolden him. In this episode of Grow a Small Business, host Troy Trewin interviews John Abrams, founder of South Mountain Company, shared his remarkable journey from launching a small six-person architectural construction firm in 1973 to growing it into a thriving 40-employee solar business generating $20 million in annual revenue. A strong advocate for employee ownership, Abrams highlighted the advantages of worker cooperatives and Employee Stock Ownership Plans (ESOPs), emphasizing their positive impact on productivity and employee retention. In his new book, From Founder to Future: A Business Roadmap to Impact, Longevity, and Employee Ownership, John Abrams explores the critical topic of succession planning for aging business owners, offering insights on preserving company values, fostering effective communication, and achieving a sustainable work-life balance. He also reflected on navigating challenges like the 2008 financial crisis and underscored the importance of community engagement in building a resilient and purpose-driven business. Other Resources: Companies We Keep: Employee Ownership and the Business of Community and Place, 2nd Edition by John Abrams The Company We Keep: Reinventing Small Business for People, Community, and Place by John Abrams Why would you wait any longer to start living the lifestyle you signed up for? Balance your health, wealth, relationships and business growth. And focus your time and energy and make the most of this year. Let's get into it by clicking here. Troy delves into our guest's startup journey, their perception of success, industry reconsideration, and the pivotal stress point during business expansion. They discuss the joys of small business growth, vital entrepreneurial habits, and strategies for team building, encompassing wins, blunders, and invaluable advice. And a snapshot of the final five Grow A Small Business Questions: What do you think is the hardest thing in growing a small business? According to John Abrams, the hardest thing in growing a small business is getting everyone aligned behind a single mission—what he describes as “getting all the wood behind a single arrow”—while also maintaining core values in the face of numerous external temptations. He emphasizes that as a business grows, staying true to its founding principles becomes increasingly difficult, yet it's essential for long-term success and integrity. What's your favorite business book that has helped you the most? John Abrams' favorite business book that has helped him the most is Managing Transitions by William Bridges. He values it for its insights on how to effectively move from one stage of business to another, emphasizing that it offers guidance on navigating all kinds of changes within a company. Are there any great podcasts or online learning resources you'd recommend to help grow a small business? John Abrams recommends several alternative sources of learning rather than traditional business media. He highlights The Ink and The Contrarian as valuable platforms, along with communicator Anat Shenker-Osorio for her insights on messaging and influence. While not all are strictly business-focused, he finds them powerful for understanding communication, leadership, and societal context—all of which he sees as essential to growing a meaningful small business. What tool or resource would you recommend to grow a small business? John Abrams recommends strong communication tools—both written and spoken—as the most important resource for growing a small business. He believes that clear, effective communication is the key to building relationships, aligning teams, and driving a business forward successfully. What advice would you give yourself on day one of starting out in business? John Abrams would advise himself on day one of starting out in business to recognize that it's going to be an incredible ride, to enjoy every minute of it, and to stay conscious and aware of how he builds relationships with people, as they are the true key to success. He reflects that in his early years, he focused too much on product quality and not enough on the importance of people, which he later realized is what small business is really about. Have you ever wondered how much of your success is down to luck? What if the world is far less fair and predictable than we'd like to think? On this episode, I explore the complex and fascinating role of luck in our lives and decisions with Dr. Chengwei Liu, Associate Professor of Strategy and Behavioural Science at Imperial College London. Chengwei shares how his research challenges our assumptions about skill, effort, and fairness – and why the outcomes we see are often far more random than we'd like to believe. We discuss why many successful strategies and best practices are built on shaky ground, and how our tendency to downplay luck creates illusions of control and reinforces unfair systems. Chengwei explains how beliefs in fairness – like the ‘just world' hypothesis – shape everything from business cultures to political systems, and how luck and misperceptions of it can create cycles of privilege or disadvantage. Chengwei also shares practical insights on how to become a smart contrarian: someone who can harness the power of randomness and serendipity while avoiding the pitfalls of bias and overconfidence. From the dangers of blindly following the ‘successful' to the need to look inward and embrace uniqueness, it's a thought-provoking conversation that will change the way you think about risk, decision-making, and what it really means to get ahead. Guest BiographyDr. Chengwei Liu is an Associate Professor of Strategy and Behavioural Science at Imperial College London. He describes himself as someone fascinated by how luck, randomness, and human biases shape success and failure – both in business and in broader society. Chengwei's work challenges mainstream management thinking and explores how much of what we attribute to skill is actually the result of random factors. His book, Luck: A Key Idea for Business and Society, examines these dynamics and how we can learn to navigate them. Beyond his academic roles, Chengwei has also worked as a management consultant, drawing on his experience in both research and practice to uncover how to harness luck and uncertainty. What do you do after you win an Oscar for playing a scary bloodthirsty mobster? You try to lead a courtroom comedy, of course! Contrarian macro strategist David Hunter delivers his boldest outlook yet: a final parabolic melt-up in stocks during 2025, capping a 43-year secular bull market, followed by what he calls the biggest deflationary bust since 1929. In this must-watch interview with James Connor, Hunter predicts the S&P 500 surging to 8000 and the Dow to 55,000 before an 80 % collapse wipes out trillions. Key points he explains: Why the Fed is already behind the curve and will soon panic-cut rates How bearish institutional positioning could fuel the melt-up Signs we may already be in a recession Why the coming global bust could dwarf 2008 How a $20 trillion Fed balance-sheet expansion could spark hyperinflation later in the 2030s Why the next bull market should favor commodities, oil, and precious metals over tech Also discussed: his targets of $ 20,000 gold, $500 silver, $500 oil, and why traditional index investing may be “dead money” for a generation. Derek Moore reflects on market reaction to the 2011 US debt downgrade and explains what S&P, Fitch, and Moody's have for ratings. Plus, are markets poised for more positive returns based on several indicators? The bear case against the markets would be a reduction in profit margins. Later, Derek reviews some data of future 12-month returns when consumer confidence is low as a contrarian indicator. Finally, looking at several current indicators and random musing in markets for clues about the future. All that and more this week. Gone are the days when a crowdpleaser like THE FUGITIVE could stand toe-to-toe against films like Schindler's List and The Piano come awards season but, hey, this is why we love The 90s - arguably Tommy Lee Jones' decade. However, there's more to Andrew Davis' acclaimed thriller than TLJ's beloved performance, and we'll discuss it all in this Real Talk segment! A segment led by two people who've never watched the original TV show this movie's based on.Also, once again: don't forget to join us during this year's Livestream for the Cure, 5/17 at 4pm CT!TIMELINE00:01:26 Go get'im00:02:06 Real Talk00:48:28 The Future & Patreon Stuff- Interested in more Contrarians goodness? It's our monthly Contrarian episode, and it comes at a natural pivot point entering the second 100 days of Trump 2.0. Three of the core members of the Contrarian — Norm Eisen, Jen Rubin, and Steve Vladeck — join Harry to break down Trump's dismal record in the courts & plunging polls against his continuing flurry of executive orders unmoored from the law and the constitution. After careful focus on recent events, the group turns to a prediction of the themes that will dominate the coming 100 daysSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
