News organizations have been credulously amplifying the White House's spin that sending troops into Los Angeles is great politics for President Trump. But the evidence isn't cooperating. On Tuesday, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt lost her temper amid tough questioning about Trump's threat to unleash “force” on protesters. She snapped that one reporter had asked a “stupid question,” and seethed angrily at a second reporter's legitimate query, showing how weak the White House's arguments on this have truly become. And a new Quinnipiac poll finds Trump's approval tanking, crucially including on immigration. We talked to Jennifer Rubin, editor-in-chief of The Contrarian, who has a new piece arguing that California is a test run for Trump. She explains why the media needs to do better at conveying just how unpopular Trump's authoritarian tactics truly are—and why failing to do so could embolden him.  Looking for More from the DSR Network? A strong advocate for employee ownership, Abrams highlighted the advantages of worker cooperatives and Employee Stock Ownership Plans (ESOPs), emphasizing their positive impact on productivity and employee retention. In his new book, From Founder to Future: A Business Roadmap to Impact, Longevity, and Employee Ownership, John Abrams explores the critical topic of succession planning for aging business owners, offering insights on preserving company values, fostering effective communication, and achieving a sustainable work-life balance. He also reflected on navigating challenges like the 2008 financial crisis and underscored the importance of community engagement in building a resilient and purpose-driven business. Troy delves into our guest's startup journey, their perception of success, industry reconsideration, and the pivotal stress point during business expansion. They discuss the joys of small business growth, vital entrepreneurial habits, and strategies for team building, encompassing wins, blunders, and invaluable advice. And a snapshot of the final five Grow A Small Business Questions: What do you think is the hardest thing in growing a small business? According to John Abrams, the hardest thing in growing a small business is getting everyone aligned behind a single mission—what he describes as “getting all the wood behind a single arrow”—while also maintaining core values in the face of numerous external temptations. He emphasizes that as a business grows, staying true to its founding principles becomes increasingly difficult, yet it's essential for long-term success and integrity. What's your favorite business book that has helped you the most? John Abrams' favorite business book that has helped him the most is Managing Transitions by William Bridges. He values it for its insights on how to effectively move from one stage of business to another, emphasizing that it offers guidance on navigating all kinds of changes within a company. Are there any great podcasts or online learning resources you'd recommend to help grow a small business? John Abrams recommends several alternative sources of learning rather than traditional business media. He highlights The Ink and The Contrarian as valuable platforms, along with communicator Anat Shenker-Osorio for her insights on messaging and influence. While not all are strictly business-focused, he finds them powerful for understanding communication, leadership, and societal context—all of which he sees as essential to growing a meaningful small business. What tool or resource would you recommend to grow a small business? John Abrams recommends strong communication tools—both written and spoken—as the most important resource for growing a small business. He believes that clear, effective communication is the key to building relationships, aligning teams, and driving a business forward successfully. What advice would you give yourself on day one of starting out in business? John Abrams would advise himself on day one of starting out in business to recognize that it's going to be an incredible ride, to enjoy every minute of it, and to stay conscious and aware of how he builds relationships with people, as they are the true key to success. He reflects that in his early years, he focused too much on product quality and not enough on the importance of people, which he later realized is what small business is really about. Have you ever wondered how much of your success is down to luck? What if the world is far less fair and predictable than we'd like to think? On this episode, I explore the complex and fascinating role of luck in our lives and decisions with Dr. Chengwei Liu, Associate Professor of Strategy and Behavioural Science at Imperial College London. Chengwei shares how his research challenges our assumptions about skill, effort, and fairness – and why the outcomes we see are often far more random than we'd like to believe. We discuss why many successful strategies and best practices are built on shaky ground, and how our tendency to downplay luck creates illusions of control and reinforces unfair systems. Chengwei explains how beliefs in fairness – like the ‘just world' hypothesis – shape everything from business cultures to political systems, and how luck and misperceptions of it can create cycles of privilege or disadvantage. Chengwei also shares practical insights on how to become a smart contrarian: someone who can harness the power of randomness and serendipity while avoiding the pitfalls of bias and overconfidence. From the dangers of blindly following the ‘successful' to the need to look inward and embrace uniqueness, it's a thought-provoking conversation that will change the way you think about risk, decision-making, and what it really means to get ahead. Guest BiographyDr. Chengwei Liu is an Associate Professor of Strategy and Behavioural Science at Imperial College London. He describes himself as someone fascinated by how luck, randomness, and human biases shape success and failure – both in business and in broader society. Chengwei's work challenges mainstream management thinking and explores how much of what we attribute to skill is actually the result of random factors. His book, Luck: A Key Idea for Business and Society, examines these dynamics and how we can learn to navigate them. Beyond his academic roles, Chengwei has also worked as a management consultant, drawing on his experience in both research and practice to uncover how to harness luck and uncertainty. AI-Generated Timestamped Summary[00:00:00] Introduction[00:02:00] Chengwei explains his research focus on randomness and variance in firm performance [00:04:00] The overlooked 50% of variance in outcomes: luck and randomness [00:06:00] Defining luck as what lies beyond our control and foresight [00:08:00] The conflict between fairness beliefs and the reality of luck [00:10:00] Luck's societal implications: why fairness perceptions differ across countries [00:11:00] Skill versus luck – how we confuse the two in our narratives [00:13:00] Why successful people over-attribute their success to skill [00:15:00] Managers vs entrepreneurs: how they differ in acknowledging luck [00:17:00] The challenges of researching an elusive concept like luck [00:18:00] Using mathematical models to understand Black Swan events [00:20:00] Why successful predictions of Black Swan events don't indicate forecasting skill [00:23:00] The problem with best practices from ‘successful' firms [00:26:00] Selection bias in business books and the danger of survivor bias [00:29:00] The ‘too good to be true' heuristic as a guide [00:31:00] Contrarian thinking as a survival strategy for uncertainty [00:33:00] The replication crisis and the problem with social science predictability [00:35:00] Human curiosity: the power of moderate surprises [00:37:00] The difference between luck and serendipity [00:39:00] How to encourage serendipity in our lives [00:41:00] Embracing uniqueness and avoiding conformity [00:44:00] Lessons for the age of AI and human creativity [00:46:00] The dangers of ignoring randomness: when biases become destructive [00:48:00] Exploiting others' biases for strategic advantage [00:50:00] Why ‘smart contrarian' thinking is more important than ever [00:53:00] Testing contrarian ideas like a scientist [00:56:00] The limits of trial and error: learning from mistakes [00:58:00] Chengwei's ongoing research: minority decision-making in venture capital [01:00:00] How passion and variance link to VC investment strategies [01:02:00] Wrapping up with reflections on luck, curiosity, and human creativity LinksDr. Chengwei Liu's book, Luck: A Key Idea for Business and Society: https://www.routledge.com/Luck-A-Key-Idea-for-Business-and-Society/Liu/p/book/9781138094260? Chengwei Liu's Imperial College faculty webpage: https://profiles.imperial.ac.uk/c.liu

Contrarian macro strategist David Hunter delivers his boldest outlook yet: a final parabolic melt-up in stocks during 2025, capping a 43-year secular bull market, followed by what he calls the biggest deflationary bust since 1929. In this must-watch interview with James Connor, Hunter predicts the S&P 500 surging to 8000 and the Dow to 55,000 before an 80 % collapse wipes out trillions. Key points he explains: Why the Fed is already behind the curve and will soon panic-cut rates How bearish institutional positioning could fuel the melt-up Signs we may already be in a recession Why the coming global bust could dwarf 2008 How a $20 trillion Fed balance-sheet expansion could spark hyperinflation later in the 2030s Why the next bull market should favor commodities, oil, and precious metals over tech Also discussed: his targets of $ 20,000 gold, $500 silver, $500 oil, and why traditional index investing may be “dead money” for a generation. Marc Hustvedt shares insights from helping to scale Mr. Beast to 350 million YouTube subscribers and building a global creator brand, revealing the unique combination of traits that separates extraordinary creators from everyone else.  Check out Contrarian Thinking and Codie Sanchez to learn more about Marc's current work helping people buy and grow small businesses.• Creator-led businesses eliminate the power imbalance found in traditional media• The most successful YouTube integrations feel natural and appeal to the global audience• Small, targeted audiences of 10,000 engaged followers can build lucrative businesses• The future of media belongs to individual creators who own their businesses• Work ethic and obsessive dedication to the craft set apart successful creators• Jimmy Donaldson (Mr. Beast) studied YouTube content for years before finding success• High appetite for risk and willingness to bet on yourself is critical• Single-minded focus on "making the best YouTube videos in the world" drove their strategy• The $3.5 million Squid Game recreation video was an inflection point for the brand• Traditional production methods create unnecessary friction for creatorsEver wonder what makes certain creators explode while others struggle to gain traction? Marc Hustvedt, former president of Mr. Beast, pulls back the curtain on how they built one of the most successful creator brands in history expanding into ventures like Feastables Chocolate and Mr. Beast Burger. What truly sets apart the 0.1% of creators from everyone else? Marc reveals it's a unique combination of traits: relentless work ethic, obsessive attention to detail, willingness to take massive risks, and laser-sharp focus on a singular mission. Jimmy Donaldson didn't just appear out of nowhere – he spent years making videos that barely got views, studying YouTube's ecosystem, and constantly iterating. The breakthrough came from understanding that success requires both quantity and quality, paired with the courage to bet everything on yourself repeatedly.  The $3.5 million Squid Game recreation video serves as a perfect case study of their approach. While traditional media might have stretched production over months of planning and bureaucracy, the Mr. Beast team compressed timelines dramatically. They secured one of the largest brand deals ever for a single YouTube video by creating a sense of FOMO around cultural moments. Most importantly, they eliminated the traditional production hierarchy: "We were both the studio and the network," Marc explains, allowing for nimble decision-making that put creative vision first.Marc is now bringing his digital expertise to Contrarian Thinking as their president, where he's exploring the intersection of education and creator economy. His observation? "You don't need a hundred million people to watch a video. If you've got the right 10,000 people, you can have a very lucrative business." This shift toward highly engaged, targeted communities represents the next evolution in digital content creation.  Listen now for insights on building digital businesses, recognizing talent, and creating content that captivates audiences in today's fragmented landscape.Marc Hustvedt: https://www.linkedin.com/in/marchustvedt/Marc was the President of Mr. Beast from 2021 to 2024.  After graduating from the University of Michigan, he co-founded Tubefilter and the Streamy Awards.Website: https://www.position2.com/podcast/Rajiv Parikh: https://www.linkedin.com/in/rajivparikh/Sandeep Parikh: https://www.instagram.com/sandeepparikh/Email us with any feedback for the show: spark@postion2.com

Send us a textBeginBot takes us on a captivating journey through his eclectic world of collecting – from CryptoPunks to Pope memorabilia – while challenging conventional wisdom about what makes art valuable in the blockchain era.As one of the early adopters in the crypto art scene, BeginBot shares how his programmer background and natural affinity for "weird subcultures" led him from CryptoKitties to BoardApe meetups, always following his intuitive sense of what resonated personally rather than chasing trends. His refreshing honesty cuts through typical crypto platitudes: "I love that people hate it," he admits about the contrarian nature of Web3 that continues to draw him in.What makes this conversation exceptional is BeginBot's passionate defense of creative conflict. While many in the space avoid criticism to maintain harmony and value, he argues that the greatest art movements throughout history thrived on disagreement and provocative ideas. "No one wants to talk about the bad stuff," he laments, explaining how the lack of critical discourse ultimately weakens artistic evolution. His admiration for Death beef's entropy-based work – blockchain art that deliberately decays with each transaction – reveals his appreciation for conceptual depth over mere aesthetics.Perhaps most fascinating is BeginBot's current exploration of AI-generated art that creates deeply personalized experiences. Rather than using technology to please everyone, he's interested in its potential to provoke powerful emotions specific to each viewer – even if that means discomfort. "I want to make them cry, scream," he explains, challenging the notion that art should primarily seek approval or financial gain.Whether you're deep in the crypto art world or simply curious about collecting, this episode offers a thought-provoking perspective on finding meaning in what we choose to value. Contrarianism vs. Courage: How True Christian Bravery Reflects Jesus In this episode of Cogitations, Tony Brewer discusses the differences between being a contrarian and having true courage as a Christian. Drawing from personal experiences and scriptural references, Tony emphasizes that real bravery isn't defined by opposing popular culture but by embodying Christ-like qualities such as humility, consistency, and love. He criticizes the tendency of some Christians to conflate loudness with righteousness and challenges listeners to rethink their approach to courage in the context of faith. Ten years ago this month we launched our first show at a time of new beginnings for podcasts. We were early to this game, and well before podcasting became part of mainstream media. In contrast to other shows about politics and current affairs we ran against the grain, avoiding snarky slogans and angry attacks. How Do We Fix It? focused instead on solutions journalism and what might be improved if we listen carefully to others who we don't agree with. We urge listeners to get out of their comfort zone.Right from the start, co-hosts Jim Meigs (leans red) and Richard Davies (leans blue) embraced nuance and celebrated the ideas of contrarians and compromisers alike. Their weekly podcast partnership lasted nine years. Together in this episode Richard and Jim consider a range of ideas that we have discussed. Our podcast was well ahead of many others in its stout defense of free speech for all sides and firm support of enlightenment ideals. We also share examples here of how we broke ground with episodes on the impact of smartphones on children and college students, the spread of COVID, and the need for carbon-free nuclear power to be part of the response to climate change. In this episode we include extracts from our rich catalog of episodes that date back to 2015. All of our shows can be found at howdowefixit.me.Recommendations: Jim and Richard are both avid podcast listeners. Two of their favorites are "Breaking History" and "Strangers on a Bench". Eli Lake interviews historians, academics and reporters for Breaking History, "mining the past of human experience to figure out the present. " British singer-songwriter Tom Rosenthal hosts Strangers on a Bench. He meets people for the first time while sitting on a park bench, usually somewhere in London.. How Do We Fix It? is a proud member of the Democracy Group podcast network. We recorded this episode at The Manhattan Institute in New York. Thanks for their help and support. Hosted on Acast.
