All kidding aside, it's a bummer that a movie like DOGFIGHT is not better known and, once we get over our annoyance at younger reviewers engaging with the film on a superficial level, we do our best to celebrate Nancy Savoca's bittersweet love story. In this wide-ranging and thought-provoking episode of Payne Points of Wealth, Bob, Ryan & Chris Payne sit down with legendary small-cap value investor Bob Killen, who brings more than 60 years of market experience to the table. The conversation kicks off with a timely debate on gold and silver, sparked by a now viral quote from Bob Killen: “There are only two people in the world who truly understand gold—and they disagree on the price.” With precious metals going parabolic and emotions running hot, Bob offers a calm, long-term framework for thinking about gold—not just as an inflation hedge, but as a reflection of global wealth, supply and demand, and central bank behavior. His long-term price outlook may surprise you. From there, the discussion broadens into the health of today's market, highlighting the shift away from a narrow, mega-cap-led rally toward a much broader and healthier market, with strength in transports, small caps, commodities, and industrial names. Bob shares why this moment may resemble the 1950s more than the 1970s or 1990s, and what that could mean for investors over the next decade. As a lifelong contrarian, Bob explains why he prefers buying what nobody wants—and names specific areas he believes are currently out of favor, including insurance stocks, REITs, and overlooked small-cap industrial companies. He also explains why discipline, patience, and risk management matter far more than being “right.” The episode closes with some of Bob's most valuable wisdom: • Why emotion is the enemy of good investing • The danger of falling in love with a stock • Lessons learned from bankruptcy, bubbles, and booms • And why avoiding big mistakes matters more than chasing big wins Whether you're navigating gold mania, questioning AI euphoria, or looking for opportunities beyond the Magnificent Seven, this episode is packed with hard earned insights, historical perspective, and timeless investment lessons. Don't miss this masterclass in long-term thinking from one of the great small-cap investors of our time.
Show Notes: Richard Millington talks about his Substack and consulting practice, Fever B. Richard shares his journey of starting his consultancy practice in 2009 or 2010, focusing on building online communities. During the pandemic, Richard received many requests for advice on becoming a consultant, leading him to start his Substack in April 2023. Richard explains how his Substack has become a side hustle, allowing him to reflect on his experiences and share valuable insights with his audience. Defining Community Consulting Richard defines community consulting, which involves building communities for customers in the technology space. He explains that community consulting helps companies save money by allowing customers to answer each other's questions, reducing the need for customer support. Richard emphasizes the importance of understanding psychology, incentive structures, and legal considerations when building communities, and he highlights the need for companies to hire the right team and have the right strategy, technology, and processes in place. How to Motivate Community Participants When asked how to motivate people to answer questions in online communities, Richard explains that people often help others for the intrinsic reward of feeling useful and making an impact. He discusses the importance of creating a sense of community and recognition for top contributors, such as unique roles and status within the community. Richard notes that financial incentives can sometimes backfire, as people may focus more on the money than on helping others. Surprising Insights on Substack Richard mentions that his most popular post, "The goal of your consulting website is to display as many trust signals as possible," received a lot of attention. He shares other popular posts, such as "Consulting is not selling your expertise" and "You only need to engage 50 people to be a success." Richard discusses his less popular but personally impactful posts, like those on contract structure and niche selection, which he found important for his audience. A Successful Approach to Content Creation Richard talks about his process for creating Substack posts. He explains that he has a routine of dedicating the first hour of his day to generating ideas and writing posts. He reflects on his past experiences and common themes among his coaching clients to create relevant content. Richard mentions that he is moving towards having a theme for a few months, leading into a program he is running, to provide a clear point of focus for his content. Examples of Consulting Projects Richard describes a recent project with a client in Las Vegas, where he helped launch a community from scratch. He explains the importance of strategy, internal buy-in, technology setup, and training for community success. Richard also discusses projects focused on improving existing communities, such as increasing engagement and proving return on investment. Courses and Coaching for Consultants Richard shares his experience with creating courses, starting with his first course in 2011, and the success of his video courses. He explains the benefits of cohort-based courses, which have higher completion rates compared to on-demand courses. Richard discusses his coaching programs, which help independent consultants select the right niche, market themselves, and attract clients. Strategies to Attract Clients Richard outlines six ways to attract clients: search engine optimization, algorithms, referrals, networking, advertising, and cold outreach. He emphasizes the importance of selecting the right acquisition channel and committing to it. Richard shares his personal experience with using social ads to grow his Substack audience and the costs involved. Pricing Advice for Consultants Richard discusses the importance of strategic pricing and the pitfalls of advice like "just raise your rates." He explains the need for a balanced approach to pricing, considering the type of client, the project's complexity, and the competition. Richard shares his approach to naming fees and the benefits of using a broad range to align with the client's expectations. Contrarian stalwarts Norm Eisen, Asha Rangappa, and Jen Rubin join Harry for a special episode filmed in front of a live audience at Princeton University. They begin with the cataclysmic fall of the Washington Post and what it shows about Trump's power to demolish even the most powerful civic institutions. From there, they turn to the deportation effort, which seems to be running itself into the ground, and Trump's latest noises about election interference. They end with some measured but forceful optimism for American democracy in 2026. A video version of this episode is available on YouTube. Whether it's a sudden wild move downward, or a full on bear cycle, even real Contrarians make the same mistakes rank amateurs do. It's time to remind ourselves what we're really doing here, by going over three of the most classic mistakes we still fall for. It would be disingenuous to talk about SERENITY without addressing the Whedonesque Elephant in the ship, so to speak. So, yes, this Real Talk segment devotes some time to the rise and fall of the Whedon brand. But we also talk about Serenity itself, and how it works for someone who's not familiar with the show versus how it works for a hardcore Firefly fan. The year was 2005 and Joss Whedon decided to audition for a spot among Big Hollywood Blockbuster Directors. He submitted SERENITY for our collective consideration and it didn't quite light the world on fire, despite its passionate fanbase - who would've thought a movie based on a short-lived cult show wouldn't break box office records? In this episode of UNSCRIPTED, host Sarah Nicastro sits down with Greg Crumpton, VP at ServiceLogic and founder of DeepKnowledge, to explore how curiosity and contrarian thinking drive innovation, why respecting local expertise beats corporate control, and how modern leaders can build cultures where people actually want to stay. Whether you're navigating acquisition-led growth, scaling teams across generations, or struggling with the shift from command-and control management, this conversation is packed with hard-won wisdom on trust, mutual respect, and what it really takes to lead today.
President Trump and the GOP are in a growing panic over ICE. Trump's advisers are sinking into recriminations. Republican officials are publicly admitting that his immigration agenda “seems to be not working” and that the GOP is “losing” the political battle over it. Others are suggesting that Alex Pretti's killing was “murder” and that it's time to “recalibrate.” Yet MAGA figures are pulling in the other direction. Media Matters has a good roundup: Many are urging Trump to escalate, with white supremacist Nick Fuentes labeling Pretti a “race traitor.” MAGA doesn't want to let the GOP even appear to moderate. We talked to Jennifer Rubin, editor-in-chief of The Contrarian, who has a new piece urging Democrats to seize this moment. We discuss how MAGA's white nationalism has landed “moderate” Republicans in a trap, why this provides an opening to divide the Trump coalition, and what Democrats can do to demonstrate that they side with the American people against Trump-MAGA's violent lawlessness. HaBO Village - Helping leaders build Passion and Provision companies
In Episode 004, Michael explains why he chose to call this newsletter The Leadership Contrarian, and why the name points to something much deeper than branding. Michael names a growing reality facing leaders today: the Formation Gap. It's the widening divide between the weight leaders are being asked to carry and the formation they've actually received to carry it well. As the world grows more volatile, faster, and less trustworthy, leadership has increasingly been reduced to shortcuts—tools without wisdom, performance without endurance, and success without stewardship. This episode explores: What the Formation Gap is and why it's growing The three forces creating pressure on modern leaders Why much of today's leadership advice is incomplete—or harmful What Formation-First Leadership really means Why leadership must be formed internally, relationally, and tactically Who this work is for—and why it matters now This is a call to whole leadership that endures without costing you your integrity, your family, or your inner life.

Director Nick Cassavetes has a penchant for successfully manipulating audiences into loving movies most critics scoff at. That explains the disconnect between JOHN Q's 26% Tomatometer score and its 78% Popcornmeter score. Of course, we live in a world where half the American population low-key celebrated the death of a healthcare company's CEO so we shouldn't be surprised most regular folk sided with Denzel on this one. More than 20 years before Luigi Mangione became a controversial celebrity, Denzel Washington was taking on the American healthcare system in JOHN Q - a thrilling hostage flick that might have been a bit too challenging for movie critics, leading to a rotten 26% Tomatometer score. In this episode of Bring the Pain, we're back, and ready to talk about the DFS contests for the NFL's Championship Sunday. With this being a two-game slate, we'll have to stick to the game plan, even when it's hard to be contrarian because of the slate size. Buckle up, because this ride is about to take off. Have a great day, everyone, and may the points be with you.
Strap in Contrarians, we have a monster on our hands today. The world has already signaled how important energy will be in the next decade, starting now. In our latest Contrarian episode, Norm Eisen, Katie Phang, and Jen Rubin join Harry for a deep dive on ICE's rampage through Minnesota. The panel reviews the legal and political prospects for stopping what local leaders call a "federal invasion." Can congressional Democrats restrain ICE? What about the broad-gauge lawsuit brought by Minnesota? Then the panel turns to whether the Administration has stepped on the third rail with its investigation of Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell, which Powell denounced as an obvious pretext for Trump's crusade to control interest rates. There have been some ugly developments around the horrific killing of Renee Good in Minneapolis by an ICE agent. Donald Trump offered a vile new excuse for the shooting, claiming the victim was “disrespectful” to law enforcement. Meanwhile, a damning Wall Street Journal report finds that since July, there have been 13 examples of federal agents firing into civilian vehicles, with eight people shot and two confirmed dead. What's more, the report suggests much of this was avoidable. All of that is quite simply a shocking indictment. Yet despite massive anti-ICE protests over the weekend, Trump officials are only being more contemptuous of those angered by the killing. We talked to Tim Dickinson, senior writer at The Contrarian, who attended a protest in Portland. We discuss the utter lack of oversight on law enforcement right now, how Trumpworld sees this as an opening to further antagonize blue America, and why protesters are determined to make something good out of Renee Good's death.
