Interview by Kris PetersThe Dead Daisies have always had an underlying stream of blues coursing through their music. It is an age-old style of music that has influenced pretty much every conceivable genre over the years, although rock music has benefited the most. With vocalist John Corabi coming back on deck for last year's album Light 'em Up, The Dead Daisies embraced their blues side even more, culminating in late night jam sessions while recording that album at the legendary FAME studios progressing into recording sessions which led to their new album Nothin' But Trouble, which is due out on May 30.The album pays homage to the work of blues legends such as BB King, Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker and Howlin Wolf, with The Dead Daisies reworking their classic songs and sprinkling enough of their own DNA through the tracks to make them their own. It is an outstanding body of work from a band with an impressively high back catalogue, and showcases some of the influences that have seen the members hone their craft.HEAVY caught up with Corabi to find out more."You know what I'm excited about so far is that the first two songs that we released have been getting great feedback from everybody," he began. "And as I was saying earlier, this was it was what we call a happy accident. This whole thing came about in such a weird, random way. We went to this legendary studio in America called Fame Studios in Muscle Shoals, and it was kind of a bucket list thing for all of us, including Marti Frederiksen (producer). So we went down there with the thought in mind that we would just maybe write and maybe do a little bit of recording down in this legendary studio. It's a legendary place, but also it's a functioning studio, and they do museum tours through this place and each night around dinner time, they bring in 20, 30 people. So we'd take a break. And then we kind of sat and thought about it. We're like, well, okay, the tour was over. We were done eating, and we'd crack open either a bottle of whiskey or some wine. And we thought we could go back to the hotel and sit and watch TV all night, or, we're here, let's just jam. Let's see. Let's just have some fun. So we kind of started jamming some blues that everybody was familiar with, obviously, like Crossroads, Going Down, and Born Under a Bad Sign. And then it was weird, we just kind of sat, and Marti kept the session rolling. We listened and thought, okay, this is really cool. This is really cool, so what we did is during the day we worked on what became the Light 'em Up record, and we just continued working at night and putting together 10 of our favourite blues songs and so far man, everybody's been raving about it."In the full interview, John spoke more about the band's intention to honour their musical roots through a collection of blues tracks. He explained the challenges of reinterpreting classic songs, emphasizing the need to make them their own while maintaining their integrity, using When the Levee Breaks as a reference for transformation. He shared insights on the evolution of specific tracks, such as Terror Plane Blues into Take My Soul, and acknowledged the blues' influence across various genres. We talked about the process behind reworking other people's music, which songs were the easiest to do and which ones more difficult and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.
John Corabi is a powerhouse rock vocalist and guitarist whose career has spanned more than four decades. Known for his gravelly voice, heartfelt lyrics, and gritty authenticity, Corabi has carved a unique niche in rock and metal history. He first gained attention in the late 1980s with The Scream, a hard rock band that blended bluesy swagger with heavy riffs. Their 1991 debut Let It Scream earned a cult following and showcased Corabi's range and charisma, even as the grunge movement was starting to dominate the airwaves. His biggest break came in 1994, when he was tapped to replace Vince Neil as the lead singer of Mötley Crüe. The resulting self-titled album, Mötley Crüe (1994), marked a radical departure from the band's glam metal roots. With Corabi on vocals and rhythm guitar, the album was darker, heavier, and more musically ambitious. Though it received critical praise and remains a fan favorite, it didn't achieve the commercial success Elektra Records had hoped for, and Corabi left the band in 1997 when Neil returned.Unfazed, Corabi continued to explore new musical paths. He played guitar for Ratt for several years and worked with various artists in projects that allowed him to flex his creative muscles. One notable collaboration was with Union, the band he formed with former KISS guitarist Bruce Kulick. Union released two studio albums that blended classic rock with modern tones, again proving Corabi's versatility and songwriting chops. In the 2010s, Corabi joined The Dead Daisies, a revolving supergroup of rock veterans. With Corabi on vocals, the band released multiple albums, including Revolución (2015) and Burn It Down (2018), which received acclaim for their retro-hard rock sound and powerful performances. His work with the Daisies helped reintroduce him to a new generation of fans, thanks to extensive touring and a polished yet passionate delivery.Corabi is also known for his solo work, where he strips things down to an acoustic, story-driven format. His live shows often include personal anecdotes, behind-the-scenes stories from his time in Mötley Crüe and beyond, and intimate versions of songs spanning his entire career. In 2022, he released John Corabi: Horseshoes and Hand Grenades, an autobiography that pulls no punches in telling his story in his own words.John Corabi is keeping the blues alive and well in 2025, with not one but two major projects lighting up the rock world. First, he's fronting The Dead Daisies on their upcoming blues-drenched album Lookin' For Trouble, and second, he's signed a new solo record deal, marking a fresh chapter in his storied careerSet for release on May 30, 2025, Lookin' For Trouble is The Dead Daisies' first full-length blues album. Born from late-night jam sessions during the recording of their rock album Light 'Em Up, the band—featuring Corabi, Doug Aldrich, David Lowy, Michael Devin, and drummer Sarah Tomek—found themselves immersed in the soulful legacy of the blues. Recording at the iconic FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, they reimagined classics like Robert Johnson's “Crossroads,” John Lee Hooker's “Boom Boom,” and B.B. King's “The Thrill Is Gone” with their signature hard rock flairYou can follow him on social media or check out his latest news at johncorabi.com.
John Corabi discussed his new album featuring blues covers, recorded at Muscle Shoals, and his experiences with various bands, including Motley Crue and The Dead Daisies. He shared stories about his motorhome, which serves as a tour bus and family home, and his upcoming trip to a bike rally in Panama City. Corabi also recounted his time with Union, Brides of Destruction, and his brief stint as a truck driver. He mentioned his interactions with celebrities like Dave Grohl and Larry David, and a memorable experience with Pantera involving ecstasy and heroin. John Corabi recounts his bizarre experience being arrested in Texas for public intoxication despite not having consumed any alcohol. He describes being released without charges and the involvement of a cop with a crush on his wife. Corabi also shares past troubles, including a fight that led to a murder investigation and his no-nonsense upbringing. He discusses the polarization in society, the influence of social media, and the importance of staying true to oneself. Corabi promotes his band's new blues record, "Looking for Trouble," and mentions upcoming tour dates in Europe. He emphasizes the unifying power of music and the need for people to focus on their own lives.0:00:00 - Intro0:00:20 - John Corabi Motorhome & Lifestyle 0:05:56 - Recognition & Fan Interactions 0:07:45 - Monsters of Rock Cruise 0:12:02 - New Album & Blues Covers 0:24:01- Forming the Band "Union" 0:27:35 - Brides of Destruction 0:35:00 - Ex Wife Cheating 0:41:25 - Truck Driver Life 0:50:30 - Larry David, Isla Fisher & Sacha Baron Cohen 0:59:00 - South Park & Hooligan's Holiday 1:01:05 - Dave Grohl & Grunge 1:06:30 - Pantera & Excellent Shots 1:18:35 - Getting Arrested in Dallas 1:28:40 - Teenage Troubles 1:34:20 - Family Influence & Different Times 1:37:55 - Choose Your Battles & Stay in Lane 2:02:20 - Peronsal Philosophy & Staying Informed 2:06:20 - Respecting Different Opinions & Property 2:25:10 - Michael Sweet Story 2:27:30 - Music Brings Us Together 2:29:10 Dead Daisies Update 2:35:20 - Outro Dead Daises website:https://thedeaddaisies.com/John Corabi website:https://www.johncorabi.com/Chuck Shute linktree:https://linktr.ee/chuck_shuteSupport the showThanks for Listening & Shute for the Moon!

John Corabi is currently the lead singer of the straight-ahead rock and roll band The Dead Daisies. A supergroup of sorts with an incredible lineup of musicians they just released (today) their new album Light 'Em Up. John has also spent a lot of time in other bands like Ratt, Union, The Scream, and of course Motley Crue. He rides, he rocks, he's an Eagles fan (we don't hold that against him,) he is the one and only John Corabi.
John is the lead singer currently for The Dead Daisies. Formerly he's been in Ratt, Motley Crue, Union, and many others. Dead Daisies' new album hits everywhere on Sept. 6th
Full Hour | In today's third hour, Dom continues the Dom Giordano Program by welcoming back Congressman Wesley Hunt onto the show for his thoughts on last night's debate. First, Dom asks Hunt, a decorated Veteran, about Biden's refusal to acknowledge the 13 lives lost in the Afghanistan withdrawal, instead saying that no service members have died under his reign. Then, Rep. Hunt tells about his trip to Atlanta in the days prior to the debate, hosting an event at a barber shop and a cigar lounge, noting the true negative implications that illegal immigration has had on the black and brown community. Then, Dom welcomes in Victoria Corabi, Founding Partner of Beaute Aesthetics on Madison Avenue in New York, for her in-depth analysis of Joe Biden's debate performance after providing an interview to New York Post discussing the amazing things aestheticians can now do to both reverse aging and improve cognitive function. Corabi, who can be found at BeauteNYC.com, delves deep into the science behind therapy using nicotinamide adenine dinucleotides, a form of peptides that activates a number helps to preserve brain cells and improve mental clarity, focus, and general cognitive health by increasing NAD+ levels. The new Dead Daisies album is dropping in September, so it's good to get Doug Aldrich from the band on Talkin' Rock with Meltdown to tell us about it. Plus, they'll be playing the Machine Shop on June 11th, in Flint, Michigan. As far as song ideas for the new album, he said everyone chipped in. "We all, all we all were, brought different parts in different song ideas. And that's generally what we do with The Dead Daisies is we'll bring in ideas and then, you know, in this situation, Marty Fredrickson was producing and he's like an amazing songwriter in his own. So he had a couple ideas already. Him and John (singer Corabi) had a couple ideas. I had a few. Michael Devin had a few. David (Lowy) had a few. I kind of helped David, finish off a couple of his ideas, and then we, we played them off for Marty." He told me that the first single's main riff for "Light Em Up" was actually written by Stevie D. from Buckcherry. "Yep. And Stevie had he had a whole song, but we just basically pinched the riff and Stevie gave his approval, and then we kind of wrote a little bit new around that riff and, and then we, you know, originally I don't remember, I can't remember his demo, how the riff was played. It might have been played down here or I'm not sure it might have been played in this position here, but this is how we ended up doing it. And it's got kind of a classic Daisy's. But yeah, it's obviously derivative of kind of the way we played it was derivative of kind of AC/ DC" He told me the new album covers a wide range of rock and was recorded in some historic studios. "There's there is a bunch of stuff that's in the vein of what we just talked about that's that fits together really well. But then we had a couple of songs that came in. Actually we we wrote one in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, in this studio called Fame Studio. That is a crazy, important studio for, you know, for early rock and for R&B. And like, Wilson Pickett and Aretha Franklin recorded their hits there. Duane Allman worked there with Wilson Pickett. And we were in the studio working on just playing through some blues stuff and kind of noodling around in a little bit for a week, and we wrote this tune that turned out to be way is really deep, it's like an album cut, it's not a single. It won't be a single, but it's probably one of the coolest songs on the record because it's like a cornerstone track that it makes the album so much better just because it's on it." Past Rock Projects With Doug Aldrich Doug told me about earlier stuff he'd done with other bands, including auditioning for KISS. "I got a call from Eric Carr, who came and saw me play, and I met him, and he invited me to come down to the studio and, and meet Paul and Gene and, and I played on a couple of tracks in the studio just to see. And then they had me come and play a couple times live with them. And it was it was, you know, I felt guilty because these guys, nobody had seen them without their makeup yet. So I really felt awkward about looking Gene Simmons in the eye and, and, and seeing his face, you know, it's like shouldn't, shouldn't be doing this. But the bottom line is, is that they wanted a little bit more of a technical guitar player." That's just for starters on this wide-ranging conversation with Doug. Get your tickets to see The Dead Daisies at the world-famous Machine Shop here.

We did it, folks. We made it to 5 years. We are now, as of the publishing of this episode, 5. We're just starting primary school. Our minds are open and receptive to new ideas, new experiences, new cultures… If only that were true. This week we conclude our Kiss vs Motley Crue two parter in banterful fashion, addressing topics like who's the biggest arsehole in those two bands? What notorious (and notoriously awful) shit did they do? What is their legacy? And we do answer these questions. Mark also tells us which of the bands is “objectively” better by tallying up all the points scored and deducted in his frustratingly oblique point-scoring spreadsheet. Which, by the way, before you ask, you absolutely cannot see. Thanks. These episodes are perhaps some of the most fun we've had doing this show in a while (without booze) and y'know, we're a bit sad it's over. It felt like old times. Like when we were young and fit and in our prime. After we did these episodes we only kept discovering other mental shit about the bands. Like Eric Carr's solo project featured Bruce Kulick on guitar and John fucking Corabi on vocals. Or that Eric Carr actually played in Lita Ford's band, which is just another reason why these two bands are tied together. Who's really the winner here though? Do you agree with our decision? What facts are you utterly aghast at the fact we missed? Because let us tell you, there's a lot. A whole lot. Another two parter's worth, we suspect. Perhaps we'll revisit this for our tenth birthday…

Alfredo Lewin repasa la etapa de la banda junto al vocalista que reemplazó a Vince Neil. Una época poco exitosa pero de alto virtuosismo gracias al talento de Corabi.
When you think of the name John Corabi it is almost instinctive to play word association and come up with Motley Crue straight after, but the singer is more than just the frontman for one of the worlds most notorious bands on one album.Much more.Corabi has also leant his talents to bands like Scream, The Dead Daisies, Union and ESP, and over the years has made a genuine name for himself as one of the finest vocalists on the hard rock circuit. It seems strange then that the man would be embarking on a solo tour titled Solo & Acoustic, Songs & Stories, with just his guitar for company and a whole swag of songs in his repertoire to choose from. This will be the first such tour like this Corabi has undertaken in Australia and promises to be unlike anything else you may have witnessed on the touring circuit. The shows will be performed in an intimate setting and will include Corabi's tales of life on the road, including the meaning behind some of his own songs along the way.HEAVY caught up with the great man on the eve of his visit to Australia, starting with just what we can expect from the shows."Just a little bit of everything,” he smiled. “It's kind of a retrospect pretty much of my entire career, stories, maybe some bad jokes (laughs). Just a very intimate, stripped down, no frills intimate, story teller... I used to do more songs and then at the end of the night I would sit there and wind up doing almost interviews, like 'hey, what's that song about?' or 'how did you write this song?' so I figured how can I incorporate that into the actual program and so far so good, man. It's been really cool. It's funny, a lot of the fans that I've done this for so far are like 'man, I love your music mate, but the stories are awesome'. It's just a fun thing. I don't even have a set list. I literally just grab my guitar and I have fun with it. It should be cool, it should be a lot of fun.”In the full interview, John talks more about the tour, what sorts of stories he will be telling, the ratio of music to stories, what material he will draw from, the pureness of just himself and a guitar on stage, surviving the music industry and more.
It's hard to imagine now after The Dirt, the upcoming (sold out) stadium tour, the many, many well attended headlining tours, but in the middle of the 1990's, Motley Crue couldn't get arrested. After Vince Neil's (contested) departure, John Corabi of The Scream took over as the vocalist and the band dropped their self titled album sans the oomlauts. There are many fans of a certain age who see this album as a lost gem, a hidden city if you will, in the canon of Motley Crue. Duncan and Nik are ready to rip into it and see how it holds up. If you need more John Crabs Corabi action, check out Episode 54 of the Department of Metal Antiquities, where we dissected the next album Corabi would sing on. www.twitter.com/devansmusic www.instagram.com/glacially_musical --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

It's a shooting fish in a barrel kind of week here on Broken Records for Steve and Remfry, as their search for the worst record in history has brought them into contact with one of their least favourite bands of all time; LA glam metal morons Mötley Crüe and their 1997 “comeback” album Generation Swine. The 90's wasn't the best time for the 80's hair metal scene, most of them just vanished or tried to reinvent themselves in a grunge or alternative style. But none of them had it quite so hard as Motley Crue, who lost vocalist Vince Neil, released a self-titled album that everyone ignored in 1994 with a bloke named John Corabi and then desperately flailed about trying to create a follow up. Producer Bob Rock, the only man to make the band sound half decent ever, was canned and replaced by a bloke who closed a door on a Melvins album, Corabi quit, sick of being constantly undermined by the label and production team, leaving the band to have to go crawling back to a disinterested Vince Neil and have him sing songs written for someone else. The result is a confusing mish mash of the type of dunderheaded hard rock typical Mötley Crüe and some desperate attempts to ape the sound of the zeitgeist. Albeit the zeitgeist of three years previous. It's not the worst, but, hold tight, as at the end of Generation Swine lives a song so terrible, so mind meltingly atrocious, so unfathomably abysmal that our hosts cannot even find the words to describe it. Dare you listen to… Brandon?!
Back in 1998, there was a glorious album written and recorded by a couple gents who were in some famous bands. You might have heard of Kiss and Motley Crue? Stevie Nicks finally addresses the whole Lindsay Buckingham firing dealy, John Corabi refutes rumours (in a very colourful way) that Nikki Sixx has threatened Vince Neil with firing to bring Corabi back, and Frank Hannon from Tesla on his "no joke" battle with the virus. (photo: teslatheband.com)

Six-Pack of Motley Crue, Volume One On this Six-Pack episode, Lee McCormack of the Tramps Like Us Podcast and Corey Nowlin join Eric Miller of Pods & Sods to kick ass on the wild side. Knee down ye sinners, we're talking Motley Crue! From their earliest days on Lethur Records and their punk roots, to the Corabi days and beyond, we're covering it all. As per usual, we take a few detours and tackle such thought provoking questions as 'who would win in a fight between All Hell's Breakin' Loose KISS and Too Young To Fall In Love Motley Crue?' Three friends, two drummers, six epic Crue songs, and infinite fun. So strap in to your gyroscopic drum kit, throw on your leather g-string, grab your nasty habits, and DUDE, it's Motley Crue DUDE!
Let's hear what John Corabi was up to before he joined Grungy Crue.
No matter what John Corabi does musically he will forever be remembered as the man who replaced Vince Neil as singer for Motley Crue in 1992. He recorded one album with the band - Motley Crue - in 1994, with many fans and critics to this day hailing that album as the best of the band's career. To celebrate the 25th anniversary of that life-changing vocal stint, Corabi hits Australian shores next week playing the album in its entirety and hopefully putting past demons to rest.In an open, honest, and at times emotional interview, Corabi lays it all on the table recalling the life, times, and tribulations of life in Motley Crue."The only thing that I can say about it (the album) is I know it was - for a lot of the fans - they thought it was a great record", he mused, "and I also know for some fans... still to this day there are some fans that don't wanna listen to it or won't bother with it. It didn't have Vince on it so it's not a Motley record but that's the beauty about choice. It doesn't affect me. To each his own but at the end of the day I'm very proud of the record that I did with the guys. I had a good time doing it and to some degree - not solely because of the Motley thing - but I think being in Motley Crue helped me to... it helped the longevity of my career a little bit. I'm always gonna be the 'other guy' but life is good".Although many long term fans knew in their Motley hearts that Vince Neil would one day return to the band, Corabi admits he was still a little blindsided when what some thought was inevitable actually transpired."There was some talk that Vince was coming back but it was kind of brushed aside", he measured, "but I went to rehearsal one day and when I walked in and saw the managers and the lawyers I'm like oh-oh, this isn't gonna be good, and that's when they told me. A lot of people don't realise that I was in the band five years and they basically said hey man, thanks for all your efforts and everything, we love you but the record label just isn't gonna support this version of the band. I just said okay, cool, and out the door I went. It was sudden but it really wasn't because there was a lot of rumblings..."After already touring the Motley Crue album for its 20th anniversary, Corabi revealed that this coming Australian tour will see the completion of a 25-year journey that has produced some of the highlights and absolute low points of a sensational career."I'm looking forward to getting down there and revisiting everything", he said, "and, to be honest with you, putting the Motley shows to bed. I think Adelaide is the last show on the trip so basically, those four shows are the last hurrah. This is the last time I'm gonna be doing these shows. When we're done it's time to move on".In the complete interview John talks about how hard it is for him to revisit that period of his life, the recording of the album and how he managed to focus on the task at hand despite media scrutiny and expectation, the sound of the album, his first jam with Motley Crue, what his time with the band has taught him personally, The Dirt movie and his involvement with it and more.
The Dead Daisies' John Corabi and Deen Castronovo join Eddie Trunk on this episode and discuss the band's latest tour, their signature "The Dead Red" wine, their respective projects, including Corabi's tenure in Motley Crue and Castronovo's time in Journey, Aerosmith, and much more!
In this episode we are joined by Travis and Devon of The Devil You Adore / Claim Your Enemy. They talk to us about the coming name change, how Devon came into the band (maybe we helped plant a seed in Travis’ brain?), recording new songs, redoing old TDYA songs with Devon, and more about the band… we also get into a full on odyssey of music discussion. We talk about random topics and discuss bands and artists like Steve Young of Crane Technique, Switchbach, Motley Crue, Corabi, KISS, Anthrax, Exodus, guns n Roses, ACDC, Life of Agony, Chevelle, 5FDP, Strapping Young Lad, Devin Townsend, Extreme, Poison, Megadeth, Mike Patton, Dillinger Escape Plan, Killer Be Killed, Alice in Chains, Fall Out Boy, Ed Bruce, Metallica, Overkill, Winery Dogs, Ritchie Kotzen and more. We kick the episode off with a new song from Claim Your Enemy, and we discuss seeing The Shame at Mercury this past weekend. Thanks for listening, and please share!
The Dead Daisies are an International rock band and musical collective formed when musicians from some of the worlds biggest bands got together to collaborate to form a classic straight up rock act. We caught up with the bands lead vocalist John Corabi to chat about creativity, writing, collaboration and getting in touch with yourself. With the bands new album out August 5th, titled "Make Some Noise” we talk through the creative process of writing and creating. We discuss where ideas come from, how to store your spark of an idea, taking inspiration for writing, and even the attributes of artists like Prince or the Beatles George Harrison. We talk extensively about the greatest game on earth, fighting in the game, covering Patrick Roy, relocation, this years Stanley Cup Playoffs, KISS, and Al Secord stories

After a huge response to last week's part 1, we're back to pick up our talk with John Corabi about the 1994 self-titled Motley Crue album. We pick up Albums Unleashed - Motley Crue with John Corabi part 2 with a discussion of Hooligan's Holiday. From there John guides us through the creative process for each song on the album; highlighting the motives for the lyrics as well as some surprising revelations about the origin of some of the music on the album and a great story about Glenn Hughes' involvement in the recording for Misunderstood. Other topics touched on in this long-form discussion include the much-talked-about MTV interview that strained the network's relationship with the band, the possibility of the band changing their name during the making of the album, one song that was re-written for the album five times and another that was almost torpedoed by record company politics; leading to a fight from the band for its inclusion. We're back with the second installment of our Albums Unleashed series and it's been a long time coming but we truly believe it's been worth the wait. John Corabi joins Aaron and Chris this week to discuss what is arguably one of the most underrated albums of all-time; Motley Crue's self-titled album from 1994. In part one of this discussion, John helps us lay the groundwork into the story of the album with stories of his audition process, pre-production for the album, and the maddening-yet-rewarding experience of working with legendary producer Bob Rock. John also shares revelations into the decision-making process of Motley Crue at that time; choosing to abandon the previously-blazed path of lyrics about rock and roll decadence and focus on delivering an album that's powerful not only musically but thought-provoking in its exploration of dark social commenatary. Tracks discussed in part one of this discussion include 'Hammered,' 'Power to the Music,' 'Uncle Jack,' and 'Hooligan's Holiday.' Also covered in this episode is information on John's current plans to perform the Motley album in-full at select upcoming dates with his band that includes guitarists Jeremy Asbrock, Josh Dutoit, bassist Topher Nolen and John's son Ian Corabi. Next week we return to the track by track of the remainder of the album and it promises not to disappoint as John is very forthcoming in sharing the impetus for each song, it's process of creation, and his thoughts on them in hindsight. Bruce Bouillet discusses his early days in Indiana, and his trek to LA for GIT (and meeting Paul Gilbert on his first day). We covers his time in Racer X (with Paul Gilbert) and The Scream (with John Corabi), and being forced to stop playing guitar because of Carpel Tunnel. He discusses his move into production (winning a Grammy with Motorhead), and his return to guitar thanks to a new non-surgical treatment. He also reveals that he's putting together a new vocal band, and what he's looking for is a singer as he starts holding auditions. Support the show: Bruce Bouillet in iTunes
John Corabi (Motley Crue, Union, The Scream) explains the power of not having a backup plan, the history of Angora and The Scream, how the writing sessions were in Mötley Crüe, the formation of Union with Bruce Kulick (and the damage of Napster), and his current solo career - including his latest release (Unplugged) and plans to tour the Mötley Crüe era material. Since the world didn't come to an end last week (check out our Songs for the Apocalypse episode), we are thrilled that we can celebrate Christmas with you all! Since the very beginning of the Decibel Geek Podcast, we've received an increasing number of requests for a Motley Crue special. So, with this being the season of giving, this week we decided to have A Very Motley X-mas. In this episode, Chris & Aaron randomly select albums from the Crue's 30+ studio discography and spin one song they'd like to share with the listeners from each. You'll hear songs from the 1981 debut, Too Fast for Love, all the way through 2008's Saints of Los Angeles. Also included in this episode are a couple of our famous Deep Thoughts With....segments; this week including one from Nikki Sixx and one from Tommy Lee. Thought provoking stuff, indeed. With Motley Crue, controversy is never far away and their press headlines tend to overshadow a lot of great hard rock music. With that in mind, we made a conscious effort to stay away from all of the off-stage drama and focus squarely on the music as this is a celebration, not an expose. We solicited some listener picks through our Decibel Geek Fan Page as well as from the die-hard Crue heads over at the Motley Shout boards. Did some of their suggestions make our list? You'll have to listen and find out. We hope all of you Motley Crue fans enjoy this audio look back on their career. As for the future, Nikki Sixx revealed in a Facebook response that there definitely will be a new Motley Crue record and it will be "the best one yet." Former Motley Crue front man John Corabi has recently released an all-acoustic album entitled John Corabi Unplugged on Rat Pak Records. The album features renditions of songs from his days with Motley as well as his pre-Crue band The Scream and post-Crue band Union. It also includes 5 new songs and an interview. Go to www.johncorabi.com to check it out and buy it. And if this episode inspires you to want to beef up your Motley Crue collection.....go Buy It Here! Contact Us! This week, the Decibel Geek podcast hits a milestone with Episode 50 and we are thrilled to celebrate it by sharing a recent in-person conversation we had with former KISS and current Grand Funk Railroad guitarist Bruce Kulick. When Chris was a 12 year old kid, he ventured to a record & comic shop in Nashville to purchase his first KISS albums. Leaving the store that day with cassette copies of Ace Frehley (1978), Dynasty (1979), and Crazy Nights (1987), he began a journey into the world of the Hottest Band in the Land. With Crazy Nights being the then-current release, he was immediately drawn to the fleet-fingered antics of lead guitarist Bruce Kulick. If you had told him back then that he would wind up interviewing Kulick years later, he would have never believed you. Bruce was in Nashville recently to play a festival show with his current band, the legendary Grand Funk Railroad, and was nice enough to let Aaron and Chris set up shop at his hotel for an in-depth discussion of his entire career. Providing the room to record was Bruce's friend and owner of Rebel Guitars; a custom, hand-crafted guitar company. Bruce was trying out his newest purchase at the interview, a sweet looking red-white-and-blue TeeVee that would be featured onstage later that night for the Grand Funk classic, 'We're an American Band.' We go all the way back to the mid-70's to discuss Bruce's time as the lead guitarist for the Andre True Connection. If you're not a connoisseur of vintage porn or disco music, then you probably aren't familiar with her but if you connect the dots, you'll see that she's an important part of 70's pop culture. Plus, this video of Bruce performing with Andrea is truly must-see TV. Bruce also shares some memories of touring the "chitlin circuit" with George McCrae as well as his time as the lead guitarist in the stage production for Meat Loaf's Bat Out of Hell album of which is brother, Bob, was also a member. In a recent appearance on Decibel Geek friend and fellow podcaster Matt Porter's KISS Room show, Kulick made mention to interviewer Frank Hagan of KISS Mask that he had heard about Ace Frehley making inquiries about a possible return to KISS and that his interest was rebuffed by Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley. This, in turn, set KISS message boards alight with speculation and accusations. We ask Bruce to clarify his remarks. Also included in this discussion are Bruce's thoughts on the circumstances that lead to the reunion, rumors about a reunion years prior that included Ace Frehley and Eric Carr, and his impressions of a recent KISS show that he attended in Irvine, CA. Midway through the show, we have a brief 4 minute segment to promote the upcoming Decibel Geek podcast live appearance at the Nashville Comic & Horror Festival on October 6th. Included in this segment are comments from festival organizer Marc Ballard with a listing of some of the special guests (including Ernie Hudson from Ghostbusters II, Airheads, and The Crow fame.) This will be the Decibel Geek Podcast's first remote recording appearance and we'd love to meet everyone that comes out. Don't miss it! (shilling....done). Back to the discussion, we get Bruce's recollections of KISS playing a Nashville show in 1994 to help celebrate Gibson Guitars 100th Anniversary and how the show different from many others. Other topics in the second half of the discussion include Kulick's take on why KISS is charging so much money for the upcoming Monster book and why it appears to completely ignore his era of the band as well as his memories of the awkward transition from Mark St. John to Bruce as permanent lead guitarist in the band. We play Name Association with Bruce and he shares initial impressions on Tommy Thayer, Eric Carr, Michael Bolton, Don Johnson, and many more and we also find out if he planned to visit Vinnie Vincent while he was in town. We close things out with some questions about the possibility of a Bruce Kulick autobiography, new Grand Funk Railroad recordings, and his memories of Union. Of the utmost importance though, we grill Bruce in this interview with the question many KISS die-hards have always wondered, 'Just what was going on with that strange looking KISS stage logo from the early 90's?' His answer may surprise you. It did us. Thanks again to Bruce Kulick for his time and for the many years of wonderful music. Be sure to visit his official site for upcoming news, articles, and tour dates.
It’s the New Style for the New Year You’ll notice a change immediately during the theme song; an abrupt belch which is a sign of something new. We’re giving this whole live recording thing a shot and you’ll hear everything in this episode warts-n-all including Aaron and Chris stumbling over words, getting tongue tied, and sound effects going off without warning. It’s as unprofessional as it gets but at least it’s entertaining. Plus, Chris doesn’t have to play around with hours of editing so hopefully this will be a welcome change that will provide more content in the future. We start out talking about what we got for KISSMAS including Aaron’s review of the Ace Frehley autobiography, ‘No Regrets’ and the cool new Rocksmith game. We update Vinnie Vincent’s output for the holidays. Impressive! Chris gives a shout out to Cassius Morris from the Creatures of the Net podcast who recently did an impromptu interview with Eric Singer who called in during his live stream. Cassius is only 13 years old but is already on his way to becoming a big name in podcasting. Congrats to Cassius! Flashback Time We share a cool radio commercial advertising the Sex Pistols tour of America in 1977 which leads to a discussion of the Sex Pistols impact in music as well as their reputation rubbing off on other punk bands like the Ramons. We also touch on a quick discussion of the G.G. Allin documentary Hated which documents all of the fecal-smearing, heroin-induced debauchery leading up to Allin’s death. Ramones in Kindergarten Chris shares his thoughts on a recent video that’s been sweeping youtube of a kindergarten class singing the Ramones’ classic ‘Judy is a Punk.’ It makes you feel all snuggly inside and gives hope to the world. There’s nothing that will renew your faith in mankind like a bunch of kids singing “perhaps they’ll die”….oh yeah! Corabi Rocks for Tots & a Cinderella Story Chris and Aaron reflect on their recent outing to see John Corabi’s Toys for Tots where they got to talk with Corabi as well as Jeff Labar from Cinderella; fresh off his hip-replacement surgery and filled us in on the possibility (or lack thereof) of new music from Cinderella. We recap the setlist and describe our trek over to a hipster bar invaded by metalheads with the strangest mix of songs from the jukebox you’ve ever heard. Van Halen & the Little People Chris & Aaron discuss the recent announcement of Van Halen’s new album and new single ‘Tattoo’ due next week. We’re totally excited to hear a song about the little guy from Fantasy Island (thanks to the guys from From Out of Nowhere for that joke). We also bemoan how much cooler this news would have been with Michael Anthony involved. Shameless Self-Promotion 101 & The Days of Axl’s Life The guys give their take on the recent induction of Guns N Roses to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with a discussion of Eddie Trunk’s recent grilling of the CEO of Hall of Fame as well as the big question of who is going to show up for the ceremony. Will it be the old guys or the new guys? Or, will Axl’s ego be big enough on its own to fill the whole stage. They wind up rambling quite a bit so we hope you dig listening to these guys yack on and on about Axl and co. Chris & Aaron make the announcement of their expanding roles in the podcasting world as they will be contributing members of Podkisst, the leading KISS podcast as well as some contributions to the great Mars Attacks podcast for their Class Albums series. That’s our first foray into the recording live thingy. We promise we’ll get better at it. In the meantime, feel free to laugh at all of the mistakes. Smell ya later!
