What Makes a Woman (And Who Gets to Decide?)

In this fierce and timely episode of The Scenic Route, we unpack the UK Supreme Court's ruling that redefines “woman” based solely on biological sex, excluding trans women from legal protections, political representation, and basic recognition. But this isn't just a courtroom debate. It's a culture war dressed in legal robes. We follow the funding behind the ruling, expose the billionaire feminists fueling the backlash, and dismantle the persistent myths about biology, gender, and identity. This episode asks hard questions: Who really benefits from the binary? Why do so many defend it so violently? And what does it mean that we wreck Teslas, but not Harry Potter books?“If you want to burn Teslas but not Harry Potter books… ask yourself why.”We draw insights from Judith Butler, bell hooks, Laurie Penny, Simone de Beauvoir, and others to examine why trans women are not a threat to womanhood: they are its most powerful proof. In this episode:Why the UK ruling matters far beyond BritainJK Rowling, Elon Musk, and the weaponisation of wealthWhy biological sex is a spectrum, not a binaryHow gender is assigned, performed, and punishedThe role of evangelical power and purity culture in gender politics10 takedowns of the “biological women only” mythSee you on the Scenic Route, because sometimes the long way is the shortest way home._____________________________________________________________________ Visit jenniferwalter.me – your cosy corner where recovering perfectionists, misfits, and those done pretending to be fine find space to breathe, dream, and create real change."

Abolition an urgent task. The Winnipeg Police take up over a quarter of the city's entire budget, draining resources away from social services. The cops regularly terrorize unhoused people and perpetuate anti-Black and settler colonial violence. Many people in Winnipeg are sympathetic to abolitionist politics. The petition created by Justice 4 Black Lives Winnipeg calling for the abolition of the Winnipeg police received over a hundred thousand signatures and massive numbers of people joined protests in 2020 to oppose the cops. This wave of activity has subsided but abolitionist organizing continues. Solidarity Winnipeg invites you to our next public discussion over zoom on April 19th at 7pm. Titled What kind of world comes after the police? A discussion on socialism and abolitionist politics. We will raise questions like: What kind of future are we talking about when we call for abolition, and what kind of coalitions do we need to build to make this vision into a reality? How do we ensure calls for abolition are not co-opted by reformists? What systems must be dismantled in order to be rid of police, and what systems could working class people begin to build in their absence? If you'd like to join the discussion, please email us at info@solidaritywinnipeg.ca and we will send you the zoom link. We also have an upcoming reading group on April 26th at 7pm over zoom. We will be reading the second chapter of the book Unspeakable Things by Laurie Penny to discuss socialist and feminist perspectives on masculinity and gender oppression. You can order the book online or you can email us and we will send you a PDF of the chapter. Please email us at info@solidaritywinnipeg.ca and we will send you the zoom link to join the reading group.

Are We In The Middle of A Sexual Revolution? Journalist Laurie Penny on changes in gender relations

Laurie Penny is a journalist and activist who has authored seven books including Unspeakable Things: Sex, Lies and Revolution, Bitch Doctrine: Essays for Dissenting Adults, and most recently Sexual Revolution : Modern Fascism and the Feminist Fightback. Penny has been a finalist for both the Orwell Prize and the National Magazine Award. In today's conversation, we discuss the "sexual revolution" of Penny's new book, which they call "an exercise in pointing out the obvious," namely that relations between the genders have changed rapidly over the past decade. Penny argues that from the MeToo movement to the decline in birthrates to the trans rights movement, we are seeing a wave of pushback to the dominance of traditional heterosexual masculinity. Women are demanding more of men, refusing to accept the inevitability of harassment and hierarchy, and Penny argues that this is an important fact in explaining the rise of the radical right, which is in part comprised of men who feel threatened by this loss of power. In our conversation, we talk about Penny's concept of "sexual neoliberalism," which they use to describe the way that sexual relations are treated as freely-made contracts, without any analysis of the underlying power dynamics.

We are in an era of crisis, collapse, and reactionary tyrants, argues Laurie Penny, but we are also witnessing a transformation: a revolutionary change in how we define gender, sex, consent and whose bodies matter.

Drag Queen Story Time), Black frames her horror of seeing the social media reactions to the Wi Spa incident in Los Angeles, especially that of Laurie Penny who suggested the child exposed to a naked man in the woman’s section of the spa “not to stare at other people’s genitals without their permission.” In response to Penny’s comment, Ceri wrote a Twitter thread about how to protect children by spotting predatory behaviour. “The point of conversations like these is to counter the unbelievable gaslighting of the rest of the world. That is the point of feminist writing. It's saying again and again and again that rage is appropriate and that everything is not okay.” – Laurie Penny Twenty-five years ago, award-winning journalist Virginia Trioli tried to get to the bottom of questions about sex and power in Australian public life in her book Generation F. In a new edition published in 2019, Virginia revisited the horrifically – and historically – polarising conversation on appropriate responses to sexual abuse and harassment that continues today. Activist, journalist and author Laurie Penny is a powerful voice in global feminism. Their 2017 book Bitch Doctrine: Essays for Dissenting Adults applied dark humour and urgent provocations to hard conversations on online harassment, the transgender rights movement and other definitive issues of our time. With author Sisonke Msimang, the pair tease out the shifts and faultlines of being a feminist in public life. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Today's episode contains ten minutes of audio from a Facebook LIVE video in which Dave Brennan speaks with Laurie Penny at Parliament Square, London, regarding abortion and related feminist/transgender ideologies. We begin this week to discuss the interconnectedness of "pro-choice" thinking, the abortion industry and other ideologies that are aggressively trampling conscience, common sense and freedom of thought/speech. Intimidating as they are (check the first ten seconds of Dave's conversation with Laurie) what impact is this all giving on the lover and follow of Jesus - aka genuine disciples of the coming King? You can watch this episode of Into the Pray premeiring on YouTube here at 9pm this evening. To help us develop this media, please would you consider helping us with 3 things:1) Consider becoming a supporter of this podcast here; 2) Forward this episode to your networks and, if you haven't already,3) Rate & review Into the Pray on whatever platform you get your podcasts on. Why Not Both is an exploration of how our multiple passions shape our identity, hosted by musician and therapist Pam Shaffer and produced by writer and photographer Laura Studarus. For our fourth season, we partnered up with Under The Radar to explore the lives of musicians, writers, actors, and creatives. For writer Laurie Penny, the transition from feminist journalist to screenwriter was a bit of a happy accident, as she crash landed in LA shortly before everything shut down. She found herself in a quarantine pod with none other than our podcast host Pam and watched while the show she worked on, The Haunting of Bly Manor, became a hit as she continued to write her manuscript for her upcoming book as Sexual Revolution. As Penny put it, only took "three years, six cities, twelve house moves, a global pandemic, wildfires, riots, marriage, an unexpected excursion into an entirely new career, breakdown and repair, heartache and adventure, love and loss and lots and lots of late-night note-taking on the state of the species" to finish and we can't wait to read it. Thanks again for listening! Make sure to subscribe, leave us a nice review, and hang out with us on Insta and Twitter. This innovative primer highlights sexual liberation as it traces the lineage of “witch feminism” through art, film, music, fashion, literature, technology, religion, pop culture, and politics. Juxtaposing scholarly research on the demonization of women and female sexuality that has continued since the witch hunts of the early modern era with pop occulture analyses and interviews with activists, artists, scholars, and practitioners of witchcraft, this book addresses and illuminates contemporary conversations about reproductive rights, sexual pleasure, queer identity, pornography, sex work, and more. Author Kristen J. Sollee elucidates the ways in which women have been persecuted for their perceived connection with witchcraft, and how they have fought back, harnessing the legacy of the witch for revolutionary means. Vind het boek hier in de webshop A whip-smart and illuminating exploration of the world's fascination with witches from podcast host and practicing witch Pam Grossman (The Witch Wave), who delves deeply into why witches have intrigued us for centuries and why they're more relevant now than ever. When you think of a witch, what do you picture? Pointy black hat, maybe a broomstick. But witches in various guises have been with us for millennia. In 'Waking the Witch', Pam Grossman explores the cultural and historical impact of the world's most magical icon. From the idea of the femme fatale in league with the devil in early modern Europe and Salem, to the bewitching pop culture archetypes in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Sabrina the Teenage Witch, and Harry Potter; from the spooky ladies in fairy tales and horror films to the rise of feminist covens and contemporary witchcraft, witches reflect the power and potential of women. In this fascinating read that is part cultural analysis, part memoir, Pam opens up about her own journey on the path to witchcraft, and how her personal embrace of the witch helped her find strength, self-empowerment, and a deeper purpose. A comprehensive meditation on one of the most mysterious and captivating figures of all time, 'Waking the Witch' celebrates witches past,

Food critic Dorothy Daniels loves what she does. Discerning, meticulous, and very, very smart, Dorothy's clear mastery of the culinary arts make it likely that she could, on any given night, whip up a more inspired dish than any one of the chefs she writes about. Dorothy loves sex as much as she loves food, and while she has struggled to find a long-term partner that can keep up with her, she makes the best of her single life, frequently traveling from Manhattan to Italy for a taste of both. But there is something within Dorothy that's different from everyone else, and having suppressed it long enough, she starts to embrace what makes Dorothy uniquely, terrifyingly herself. Recounting her life from a seemingly idyllic farm-to-table childhood, the heights of her career, to the moment she plunges an ice pick into a man's neck on Fire Island, Dorothy Daniels show us what happens when a woman finally embraces her superiority.  A satire of early foodieism, a critique of how gender is defined, and a showcase of virtuoso storytelling, Chelsea G. Summers' A Certain Hunger introduces us to the food world's most charming psychopath and an exciting new voice in fiction. Summers is in conversation with award-winning author, columnist, journalist, and screenwriter Laurie Penny. _______________________________________________   Produced by Maddie Gobbo & Michael Kowaleski Theme: "I Love All My Friends," a new, unreleased demo by Fragile Gang.
