Oneika Raymond ends her wellness journey in Maui, Hawai‘i's second largest island known for its diverse landscapes, from lush rainforests to sandy beaches. There, she meets up with locals who help her become a more mindful malihini, or visitor, to the island by connecting with the Hawaiian language and history and shopping local.Oneika begins her day with a morning Hawaiian language lesson on Kā‘anapali Beach with Luana Kawa'a, a language teacher who's been instructing students to speak the melodic language for over 30 years. Luana knows that language is the gateway to cultivating a better understanding and appreciation for Hawaiian history and local traditions. She leads Oneika through a language lesson that connects her to the deep meaning behind essential Hawaiian vocabulary. Then, Oneika heads to her first stop of the day: Hale Hōʻikeʻike at the Bailey House, a museum run by the Maui Historical Society that boasts the largest collection of pre-contact artifacts in Maui. She meets up with volunteer coordinator James "Kimo" Guequierre to learn about the painstaking craftsmanship, and mana, or energy — especially from Maui's women — that went into these artifacts.  Next, Oneika goes in search of a Hawai'i specialty — shave ice. Her search ends at Olowalu General Store, a family run fixture of West Maui that's been in operation since 1932. Oneika sits down with Olowalu's manager, Rylee Ann Domogma, to learn about the importance of buying local to support independent purveyors on Maui. Oneika travels back to her hotel, the Sheraton Maui Resort & Spa, to meet one more inspiring business woman on Maui: Anna Kahalekulu, the founder of Kulua, a small batch clothing shop inspired by Maui. Oneika finds out how supporting local artisans like Anna sustains the community and contributes to a more meaningful experience on the island. Oneika and Anna end the day watching the nightly lele kawa, or cliff diving ceremony, that takes place on Kā‘anapali Beach. Looking out over the water, Oneika reflects on her transformative journey this season. Experience Maui's transformative power for yourself. Oneika Raymond is hungry. And, luckily, she's headed to Mexico City, one of the most exciting culinary destinations in the world — and a place she always finds herself coming back to. There, she visits three eating and drinking spots that connect her to the layered flavors and history that give Mexico City its particular sabor, or flavor, to deepen her understanding of the dynamic capital. Oneika starts her day off early with a sunrise float through Xochimilco, an historic and active canal system perhaps best known for its weekend parties on the water. But, Oneika's guide, Anais Martinez, the founder of Devoured Food Tours, is here to show Oneika the quieter side of Xochimilco: its farms, or chinampas. Oneika and Anais tour a working chinampa, where Oneika picks fresh produce for a farm-to-table breakfast. Over the meal, Anais shares how Xochimilco once nourished most of Mexico City — and how its role continues to evolve as a vital piece of the culinary scene. Then, Oneika heads to the beating heart of Mexico City's food scene: its bustling streets. She meets up with Natalia de la Rosa, a local food and travel journalist at Tacos de Mixiote Castelán — one of Natalia's go-to street food taco stands in her neighborhood of Juárez. Natalia shows Oneika how to order and dress up mixiote tacos — a taco you'll be hard-pressed to find outside of Mexico. Then, they sit down to discuss the importance of street food to the fabric of daily life in Mexico City.   After a full day of eats, Oneika ends her tasting tour back at her hotel, the JW Marriott Mexico City Polanco, for a digestif. She takes part in a private mezcal tasting at the hotel's Tahona Room, the first-ever mezcal tasting room in the city. Oneika's guide, Julie Wharton, Tahona's bar manager, explains how the different regions and families of mezcal producers in Mexico infuse each spirit with a unique flavor and story, all of which deepens Oneika's appreciation for the eating and drinking traditions of Mexico City she thought she knew — and leaves her hungry for more. Experience Mexico City's transformative eating and drinking traditions for yourself. On this episode, we welcome a dual military married couple that have both retired from the Air Force. Oneika Brown retired first, after working in aviation maintenance and intel. Since leaving the military in 2018, she has been working for a government contractor using her administrative skills. In addition, she uses her creative skills in sewing and launched an alterations and custom fashion design business. Curtis Brown had a diverse career in the Air Force where he served as an aircraft mechanic, healthcare program manager and military training instructor. Since his retirement in 2019, Curtis has been working in program and project management. He is also the Director of Military Affairs for the Alamo Chapter of the Project Management Institute.Oneika's transition was smooth from the perspective of securing a job. Before she retired, she was using her administrative skills to manage personnel security clearances. She was able to land a similar position as a government contractor after she retired. Her challenge in the military transition was learning how to find her identity once she took off the uniform. While Oneika was in the process of transitioning, Curtis received new orders and was given the option of relocating to New Mexico or North Dakota. After weighing his options and considering the needs of his family, Curtis decided to retire and pursued his PMP certification. When Oneika began her new role as a government contractor, she essentially had the same responsibilities as her previous role while serving in the military. In fact, she remained in the same office and had the same work colleagues. Although her job description is similar to her previous military role, she has tighter restrictions when it comes to executing her job. She realized that her rank and position in the military often helped her to meet deadlines. Without her rank, Oneika has had to learn how to function within the office hierarchy.Oneika reflects on her military career and admits there are times she would like to erase the memories of those 20 years. As a young 17-year-old joining the Air Force, Oneika started off as an aviation mechanic even though she is a creative at heart. As a person of color and a female in a male-dominated field, Oneika experienced loneliness at times. Through journaling and counseling, she has come to embrace her military service for shaping her character. Learning to recognize the positive aspects of her military service has helped her to understand her identity without the uniform. As a married couple, Oneika and Curtis believe their open communication allowed them to each have a successful transition. They realigned their goals as individuals and as a couple during their military transitions. Although their transitions were not similar and both are still navigating life without the uniform, they credit honest communication for their strong marriage. They operate as a team.Oneika and Curtis advise service members to look at the pros and cons of the survivor benefit plan. After weighing their options, they chose to instead increase their life insurance plans and decline the survivor benefit plan. Research your options well in advance of your transition and before you receive a disability rating. Be prepared for your tax bracket to change and research ways to decrease your taxable income. Together, they take a walking tour through Kreuzberg to get to know the district, and its large and growing collection of women-led eateries. Oneika and Dalad meet each other in front of Kitten Deli, a women-owned breakfast joint that serves Israeli and Middle Eastern fare near to the Landwehr canal. The popular dining spot is located in Kreuzkölln, a small, inviting pocket of Berlin nestled between Kreuzberg and Neukölln that's become known for its own bustling artistic community. It's also the perfect gateway into Kreuzberg, just north across the canal.  Dalad leads Oneika to one of the many walking bridges that cut across the Landwehr canal, stopping to admire the Turkish Market that runs alongside the canal every Tuesday and Friday. Here, visitors can find plenty: spices, fresh eggs, jars of olives, Anatolian dishes and even ornate textiles. It's a true one-stop shop.Along the way, we catch up with Dalad's friend, Ash Lee, owner of Chungking Noodles, a casual spot for spicy, hand-pulled noodles in Kreuzberg. Ash helped Dalad take the leap to move to Berlin and start Kin Dee. While strolling its tree-lined sidewalks, Oneika takes in the neighborhood's vibrant street-art, plentiful greenspaces, and vintage stores. In no time, we arrive at Markthalle Neun, Dalad's go-to spot to source local produce for her restaurant. But first, the two make a beeline for the food stalls that fill the market hall with delicious smells. It's lunchtime, and Dalad brings Oneika to one of her favorite spots in the market: Manti Berlin, a women-led, Turkish food stall that serves pillowy, ravioli-like dumplings called ‘manti'. Satisfied, and ready to continue their tour, Dalad and Oneika cut across Markthalle Neun to grab some vegetables for the restaurant — and then, they're off to Kin Dee, their last stop of the day.Once at Kin Dee, Dalad and Oneika relax into one of the restaurant's repurposed tables for a sit down conversation about Dalad's work in Berlin, and her hopes for the city's burgeoning food scene. Oneika Raymond dials into Chicago's Bronzeville neighborhood, where historian Sherman ‘Dilla' Thomas takes us on a bus tour through the birthplace of gospel music and Black History Month located just four miles south of the city's downtown. Bronzeville has quickly become the most popular neighborhood tour that Dilla offers through his bus tour company, Chicago Mahogany Tours, thanks in part to the viral TikToks that Dilla makes to illuminate the history and contributions of Bronzeville, formerly known as the Black Metropolis. On his tour, Dilla brings the energy of his TikToks, and the stories of Bronzeville, to life. We start out on Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, a road steeped in history. The 14-mile long street was renamed for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in 1968, making Chicago the first city in the country to name a street after the slain civil rights icon. As we drive the thoroughfare, we learn how Chicago's Black community created its own thriving business and artistic community within its boundaries — which brings us to our next stop on the tour.   We roll through the Blues district on 47th street, home to the spirit and sounds of the electric Chicago Blues that filled this nightlife corridor in the 1930s. Along the way, Dilla points out the home of jazz great Louis Armstrong, one of a handful of jazz legends who lived in Bronzeville. We end our musical leg of the tour at the birthplace of gospel music, the National Museum of Gospel Music. For the first time on the tour, we step off the bus at our next stop. We find ourselves standing in front of an impressive monument dedicated to Ida B. Wells Barnett called the “Light of Truth”. The 35-foot tall structure, built to honor the journalist and civil rights activist, is Chicago's first monument officially designated to a Black woman. We end the tour at Bronzeville Winery, a neighborhood staple helping to shape a 21st-century version of the metropolis we just toured. Co-owner Cecilia Cuff shares how the winery supports community, from its wine list, which is made up of 75 percent minority or women-owned bottles, to the local artists, musicians and staffers it works with daily. Then, Dilla heads to the DuSable Black History Museum and Education Center for a full-circle conversation with Oneika. They discuss the impact that Bronzeville has had, not only on Chicago, but globally, and talk about the history that's continuing to be made here today. To read full episode transcripts from About the Journey and see photos of each featured destination, head to About the Journey on Marriott Bonvoy Traveler. Oneika Raymond heads to Little River, Miami, a creative hub north of downtown and across the bay from Miami Beach. There, she's joined by local entrepreneur Isabella “Izzy” Acker for a driving tour of the area where Isabella launched Tigre Sounds, a global music discovery platform with a focus on Latin artists. Through it, Isabella hosts live Tigre Sessions, or music events in lesser-known neighborhoods and venues across the city.  Oneika meets up with Isabella at Sweat Records, an independent record store in Little Haiti and a go-to location for music lovers. Oneika has recently moved to Miami and made it her home base, so she's excited to hop in the car with Isabella to get a feel for a trio of neighborhoods that are new to her: Little Haiti, Little River, and Miami Modern, or MiMo for short. They're all within a five minute drive of each other, and home to an exciting creative community of artists, musicians, and entrepreneurs. Oneika and Isabella set off on a driving tour up Little Haiti's main corridor, Northeast 2nd Avenue. Along the way, Isabella points out mainstays like the Little Haiti Cultural Center, Chef Creole, and the B&M Market. From there, they venture into Little River, where the buildings begin to look more industrial and Isabella shares tips for different music venues to check out, like Understory and Helmet One. The final neighborhood in the tour is MiMo, an area along Biscayne Boulevard known for its unique style of architecture featuring curved walls, modern angles, and geometric patterns. You'll find all sorts of fusion restaurants on the thoroughfare as well, including Luna Pasta e Dolci, an Argentine-Italian restaurant which boasts some of the tastiest empanadas in the city. Oneika and Isabella grab a bite at Caracas Bakery, a Venezuelan-owned and French-inspired café serving up pastries and coffee with a Venezuelan twist. There, they reflect on the diversity of the neighborhood and the importance of supporting local businesses. They end the day by sitting down to discuss how Isabella is committed to doing her part to build experiences beyond Miami's beaches that both locals and visitors can enjoy – and why live music and supporting Latin artists is such a big part of that commitment. They talk about the present and the future of the Latin music scene in Miami, the live music venues to support across the city, and how Isabella is raising awareness for Latin music in Miami and beyond through Tigre Sounds. Thanks to Tigre Den for providing a Tigre Session recording of Miluhska performing Loba for this episode. To read full episode transcripts from About the Journey and see photos of each featured destination, head to About the Journey on Marriott Bonvoy Traveler. Oneika Raymond dials into South Central, Los Angeles, where local cycling enthusiast Michelle Moro takes us for a tour in her beloved hometown. Born and raised in South Central, Michelle knows her neighborhood inside and out - but she still takes the time to explore like a traveler when she documents her bike rides on her TikTok, @miche1ada. To showcase the past and present of historic South Central, Michelle hops on her glittery blue bike for a ride up South Central Avenue, one of the longest roads in the city. She begins the tour at the intersection of South Central and East Slauson Avenue, where she quickly points out the Snack Shack, a red and yellow stand that's been serving burgers and fries since 1941. Michelle's first stop on the tour is the original site of the Dunbar Hotel, where jazz legends like Billie Holiday and Duke Ellington stayed when they performed next door at Club Alabam between the 1920's and 1940's. Today the hotel is a home for elderly community members, though its historic brick facade, lobby, and grand entryway have been preserved in recognition of the Dunbar's significance to the neighborhood. Michelle pays tribute to the rich history of the avenue before moving on to grab breakfast at Delicious at the Dunbar, a restaurant serving a mix of soul food and Mexican specialties. From there, she sets off on foot down Central Avenue to take in the community-informed murals being installed by South Central Arts as part of the Green Alleys Network. While there, Michelle bumps into artist José Cruz and South Central Arts founder Will Flores, who share how the project is both inspired by and reflective of the community that call South Central home.To end the day, Oneika and Michelle sit down to discuss the benefits of slowing down to really get to know a place and how local organizations are helping Los Angeles visitors and locals alike do just that. To read full episode transcripts from About the Journey and see photos of each featured destination, head to About the Journey on Marriott Bonvoy Traveler. Oneika Mays has always been a seeker, even as a young child. She grew up in a stable family structure, went to good schools, and even landed in a fulfilling career she loved. But there was always something nagging at her, just below the surface: she wanted to trust herself, but couldn't quite get there. Then, one day in yoga class, her instructor said “You can change or be comfortable, but not both.” As tears streamed down her face she realized she needed a change, and was ready to embrace the discomfort.  Fast forward to today and Oneika is still a seeker, learning and transforming as she teaches yoga and meditation to individuals and groups both inside prison and on the outside. We'll hear how Beth didn't always feel included in Denver's vibrant outdoor scene, but how claiming time on the trail for herself helped her tap into the community and motivated her to want to share the benefits of nature with more people.Using the Denver Sheraton Downtown as basecamp, Beth shared her recommendations for best day hikes along with other outdoor adventures to consider like kayaking the rapids at Confluence Park or cycling the Cherry Creek Regional Trail, but at over 8,000 feet elevation and with views of 14,000 foot Mount Evans, Genesee Park was the perfect place to spend a breezy afternoon.Since Beth was born and raised in Denver, she gave Oneika lots of insider insights about her city, including why it's worth standing in line at Little Man Ice Cream for a post-hike treat and why any food slathered with green chiles is quintessentially Colorado.

At 40 years old, Oneika Mays found herself in limbo. After walking away from a great paying job with all the perks she could never have imagined possible for herself growing up, she found herself in the middle of a sweaty hot yoga class in New York City and on a threshold. In the throes of chair pose, she realized she didn't know the way forward, but she knew it wasn't what she had been doing—the way ahead was outside her comfort zone. Today, Oneika is a Mindfulness Coach working full-time in Rikers Island Correctional Facility in New York, and everyday she explores the grayness of finding joy and connection in a jail while also believing that the oppressive system must crumble. “Joy does sometimes exist in conjunction with pain or with sorrow,” she says, and “we have to allow that to happen.” In addition to her work within the prison system, she teaches classes, facilitates workshops and trainings, and leads retreats. She believes that when we can connect with ourselves we can become more connected to the world around us. Episode 007 is where I discuss Oneika the Traveler's solo travel article, titled “Why a solo vacation is the best self-care a woman can give herself”.Many women have attempted to write such an article and many have succeeded but Oneika's blog post touched my soul. She is an excellent writer and you should follow her on all social media channels.Anyway, on my travel agency website, I wrote that "Solo Travel is the highest form of self-indulgence. It allows a person the opportunity to enjoy a destination on their own - no compromises, no schedule, no drama."Truly “no noise from others” is the only way to de-stress and recharge. Solo Travel is empowering and essential. And Oneika's post is basically encouraging all women to be selfish. At least every once in a while.Webster's Dictionary definition of Selfish says: concerned excessively or exclusively with oneself; seeking or concentrating on one's own advantage, pleasure, or well-being without regard for others.Pleasure, well-being… Selfish is not a bad word to me. That's why I named my travel agency, SelfishMe Travel.Women have always been the nurturers and caretakers from before time began. You've raised your children (maybe even your grandchildren) or you've taken care of your spouse, significant other, lover, parents, in-laws, neighbors, friends, or coworkers... everyone except yourself.Okay, maybe being an only child gives me the advantage to think like that but... one of my lifelong goals has been to influence female family members and friends to finally think of themselves first, to be selfish, to feel good about wanting to be alone for a window of time, and that solo travel is safe.I'm also going to use this podcast as a tool to encourage you towards solo travel, going beyond your comfort zone, and stepping out on faith. The Slow Traveling Soul Sister podcast is sponsored and hosted by SelfishMe Travel. Oneika Phillips is a burst of energy. She has the type of personality that can light up an entire theatre. And she does… quite often. Oneika has been dancing from ever since she can remember. Born in Guyana and raised in Grenada, Oneika was exposed to musicals via her parents VHS collection. Jesus Christ Superstar was her favorite.Oneika’s colorful personality and obvious talent and love for dance eventually lead her to attend University in Virginia. She admits that those years were not always the most joyous, however what they did was allow her to look within and discover things about herself that would prove useful both in life and career. Having lived in the Caribbean and East Africa, Oneika for the first time was “the other.” Instead of crumble under the pressures of that title, she embraced it and became just that. Oneika separated herself from the pack with positive thinking and an unbelievable work ethic.Onieka continues to be “the other”. She is exceptional. That little girl who fell in love with musicals in her living room in Grenada is now a celebrated actor, dancer and singer on theatres biggest platform, Broadway. Oneika has graced the stage and appeared in several of Broadway’s best shows in recent times including Fela! and Westside Story. Being a part of such productions has been rewarding enough, however Oneika has had the privilege of being a part of two casts that have won Tony Awards. In addition, she has danced with some of the best dance companies in New York City. Oneika embodies success, wrapped in a spirit of joy and humanity. She sees her purpose as larger than her individual accomplishments. She does it to encourage, to remember and to inspire. She does it for Grenada, the Caribbean, the ancestors… and for the culture! Even though she has done and accomplished much, Oneika is not done yet. This is the Story… Thus far… Of Oneika Phillips

Sometimes I’m still amazed at the connections you can make via social media, which is exactly how I became acquainted with our new guest, Tyler Janeé. Her early travel experiences started with family RV trips. A trip to Jamaica sparked her interest in international travel and for years she's been making it happen by any means necessary! In high school, a study abroad advisor visited her class to talk about collegiate study abroad opportunities (how cool)! From that point on, she knew study abroad was something she wanted to do. Once enrolled at Clark Atlanta University, she made her way to the study abroad office. After weighing her options, she decided on a program in Costa Rica! The program representative for International Studies Abroad assisted her with the enrollment, choosing a home stay family, and so much more. Prior to traveling abroad, she began researching online. Although there weren’t many resources at the time, she (fortunately) found Oneika Raymond’s blog Oneika the Traveler! Resources like her blog are extremely useful for Black students studying abroad; we both agreed that while this perspective has grown, there's so much more to be done especially as it relates to the study abroad sector. During the interview we discuss her in country adventures, managing reverse culture shock, teaching abroad and how these experience led to the creation of the Turbulence Podcast and her new nonprofit Study Elsewhere. There’s a strange reference right now about how being in isolation is akin to being locked up. We’re seeing that narrative replicated around the country in the many white-led riots against the stay-at-home rules. Let’s be clear: this quarantine is NOTHING like what people experience in prison. In fact, the outbreaks in prisons around the country reveal that incarcerated people are both more exposed and less able to protect themselves. But beyond the current circumstances, many are questioning the role and efficacy of incarceration all together. And one of those advocates is Oneika Mays, the first Mindfulness Coach at Rikers Island Correctional Facility, where she works one-on-one with incarcerated people to help them cope with the stress and trauma of incarceration and foster resilience for re-entry and recovery. Oneika says that our system “is a reflection of the society that we live in, and changes in society will change the way that we police, will change the way we treat certain people in schools and in certain neighborhoods. And when those kinds of things change, when we change our perception of the way that we view groups of people, that will lead to lasting change.” This conversation is fierce and vulnerable and exactly what we all need to hear right now. Special thanks to guest host Ryan LeMere and Oneika for putting forth the courageous conversation that we all need to be a part of right now. In this episode of PoPolitickin, we politick with Oneika Elliott. Growing up in Hackensack, NJ, Oneika found the best way to express herself was through writing poems, thoughts, feelings, and the many things she had observed. From a young age, Oneika began singing, with her influence ranging from Soul, Reggae, and R&B. She realized her God given gift, when she began to sing in church, it is where she noticed the strength in her voice. To sing on a stage in a crowded room filled with people, was the dream Oneika held on to. As years go by, her dream became so small as she started to think her deepest desires were to never happen. However, at the age of 21, after dropping out of college, Oneika faced a heartache that returned her back to singing and songwriting. She then decided to use her gift to tell stories, to inspire others, and speak to souls using her gift from God.

On today’s show, Rosetta chats with Oneika Raymond. Founder of Oneika the Traveller, Oneika is a world traveller with a passion for making travel more accessible by sharing tips and tricks to help dispel the myths associated with travel. A teacher at heart, Oneika discovered her passion for travel at a young age. Growing up in Canada as a child of Jamaican descent, Oneika was always fascinated with the diversity of her home town of Toronto. In college, Oneika changed her major from economics to French literature in order to study abroad her junior year. The rest - as they say - is history. Once Oneika discovered her love of travelling abroad she made it her mission to travel to as many countries as possible. Throughout this discussion, Oneika shares the inception of her business as well as the realities of travelling on a budget. Finding an audience by sharing your passion. Once Oneika was bitten by the travel bug, she knew it would be an important part of her life. A self-proclaimed travel addict, Oneika has been travelling and living abroad for 13 years now. In the process of travelling, she decided to start sharing her stories with the world - and so, Oneika the Traveller was born. She immediately found an audience and realized her message was important. Her mission was clear: to make travel more accessible to people - especially to African Americans. Oneika discusses how her love of travel combined with her passion for writing were the perfect combination for her blog. She also offers insight into how she monetizes the opportunity and turned it into a flourishing business. Tips and tricks to make travel more accessible. Oneika’s passion for travel is clear. What’s even more evident is her love of sharing it with others. She offers some tips to help you better understand how to make travel possible for yourself - even on a tight budget. Oneika discusses why it’s important to be realistic about your budget and to be willing to make sacrifices in order to have these life-changing travel experiences. She makes it clear that it’s not always about traveling first class, but rather it’s about the experience of being in an amazing place. She drives the point home by sharing tactical blog posts that explain how to travel, where to stay, and even how much you can expect to spend. Tackling a to-do list and making the most of your day. Clearly, Oneika stays pretty busy. In addition to maintaining Oneika the Traveller, she has kept her job as a teacher- she currently teaches middle school language arts. The question is, how does she manage to balance it all. Well, Oneika explains how she stays focused by making lots of lists. She also shares how she tackles her to do list by “slaying the dragons first” and how she maintains balance in her very busy life. She also discusses her passion for teaching, along with the fact that she teaches English as a second language while living abroad. Her love of teaching, Oneika says, is at the core of who she is, which is why she maintains teaching jobs wherever she goes. Finding a way to share your passion - even if you don’t have much time. As they close out their chat, Oneika and Rosetta discuss the writing process and how Oneika manages to produce so many blog posts. Oneika goes on to offer a tip to people who are ready to share their story, but may not have the time to write 1000 words for a full blog post. Her recommendation? Microblogging. In closing, Oneika shares some of her favorite books, her top travel destinations, and her big tip for women who are ready to follow their dreams. Her tip? Do it. Don’t second guess yourself - just do it. Start now. Outline of this great episode [0:33] Rosetta’s introduction of her guest, Oneika Raymond. [1:34] Oneika’s mission and the work that she does.
