Decentralised autonomous organisations or DAOs are one of the fastest-growing segments of the blockchain space. In this episode we are revisiting an oldie but goodie: our 2022 conversation with Donald O'Brian Porter, the Founder of CaribDAO, who explains, among other things, * how DAOs work; * the parallels between DAOs and the informal cooperative savings system that has been prevalent in Caribbean countries for decades; * how an individual can verify the authenticity of the DAO; and * three (3) questions someone should ask before joining a DAO. Sony's newly developed Layer 2 scaling solution, Soneium, has achieved significant adoption in the Decentralised Finance (DeFi) space. The network's total value locked (TVL) has surpassed US $45 million, propelling it into the top 60 blockchain networks. This growth is attributed to the "Conquest" campaign, which incentivised user engagement and exploration of Soneium's ecosystem. Decentralised exchanges on Soneium, like Kyo Finance, Velodrome and Sonex, have seen substantial increases in TVL. Despite initial community concerns regarding censorship, Soneium has gained traction, demonstrating promising growth in the competitive DeFi landscape. The success of Soneium highlights the continuing development and adoption of new projects within the cryptocurrency market, even amidst broader market challenges.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

A conversation with Sébastien Crépieux, founder of Invers, developing a decentralised insect farming supply chain for animal nutrition, placing farmers at the heart of the model. The role of animals and livestock in farming is something we cover frequently, but we've never discussed insects which can transform immense amounts of agricultural waste—such as leftovers from beer brewing or wheat milling—into high-quality protein and fats. Perhaps most importantly, their frass (manure) is an amazing fertilizer. Of course, humans could consume insect protein directly, but in the Global North, this is rare and may take a long time to change. Insect protein is also an excellent poultry feed, but its greatest impact may be in aquaculture—specifically, fish feed. The immense destruction caused by industrial bottom-trawling fishing fleets is difficult to describe and comprehend. However, it's safe to say that catching anchovies or krill for fish meal—to feed salmon and other fish—is highly inefficient and environmentally harmful. With Sébastien we explore a decentralized approach to insect farming in France, one that focuses on putting farmers at the centre—not by reintegrating large ruminants into farms, but rather small mealworms. Why not go super-centralized with massive facilities and raise hundreds of millions of euros, as some other companies have done? Why hasn't more insect meal been sold to the aquaculture sector to help reduce pressure on the oceans?More about this episode on https://investinginregenerativeagriculture.com/sebastien-crepieux.==========================In Investing in Regenerative Agriculture and Food podcast show we talk to the pioneers in the regenerative food and agriculture space to learn more on how to put our money to work to regenerate soil, people, local communities and ecosystems while making an appropriate and fair return. Jana Byars talks to Erika Graham-Goering of the University of Oslo about Lordship and the Decentralized State in Late Medieval Europe (Oxford University Press, 2025), which was edited by Graham-Goering, Jim van der Meulen, and Frederik Buylaert. The origins of modern European states are often traced back to the expansion of royal and princely authority in the late Middle Ages, transforming scattered power structures into centralised governments. Lordship and the Decentralised State in Late Medieval Europe rethinks state formation as a process of decentralisation, exploring how these governments willingly left power to lesser political players. It challenges the assumption that the rise of states made lordship obsolete, showing instead how distributing authority among local lords reinforced the development of new political systems. The contributors tackle this fresh perspective on lordship and state formation from two complementary angles. Detailed snapshots of lordship in France and the Low Countries assess the political significance of different aspects of lordly power. Historiographical essays discuss frameworks for understanding relationships between lordship and the state in contexts across Europe. These comparative perspectives establish an innovative approach to a key question in political history. Learn more about your ad choices. Looking at a new concept in medicine - that of decentralisation - taking back control and making surprising but simple changes to your lifestyle to enhance health.Find Dr Boon Lim's talk for the Awakening Heart Collective herehttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rksXwEf6ZWU&feature=youtu.be00:00 Intro to decentralised medicine - taking back control of your health. Especially important in chronic conditions like CFS/ME which are not dealt with well by conventional medicine.03:07 Integrative medicine - Dr Boon Lim as an example - a cardiologist who uses HRV as well as more conventional methods, to measure your autonomic (nervous system) health- the importance of breath to regulate.06:40 Sunlight as a nutrient - not just foods supply this. Better than supplementation as it helps boost mitochondrial function without the limitation of poor digestion. Autonomic regulation (vagal toning, etc) is much more likely to benefit those with low energy/immunity.08:36 We need daylight every day through the skin and eyes. Huge difference in irradiance between indoors and outdoors so exercise outdoors. Important for eye health and inflammatory brain disease like Parkinson's and Alzheimer's.11:15 Sound like binaural beats - helps brain coherence (resonance) and change your brain state away from beta (fight and flight) to alpha (rest and digest/flow state). Input vs. output. Dysautonomia common in long covid.13:31 EMDR - Eye movement densitisation and reprocessing helps us reprocess childhood trauma as over that then stops triggering your autonomic nervous system unconsciously.14:43 Taking back control - some innovative clinicians are working within the centralised system enables you to work as a team.16:50 My history from centralised to decentralised. Ever wondered about the origins of Twitter and the role of social media in movements? I got the chance to sit down with Rabble (Evan Henshaw-Plath) who was there at the start as the first employee of the company that created Twitter. We talk about that but begin with the early days in Northern California growing up as a child of hippies and counterculture thought that and being immersed in that as a child. We also talk about computers back when that was a new tech, the internet and what social movements can use technology for, including current project Nos and also Causes. We also talk about the Edmund Hillary Fellowship which we are both part of. This was a fascinating conversation and if you enjoy it why not check out the 400+ others in earlier episodes of seeds which is trying to create a database of life stories that we can all learn from. Web3's decentralisation is currently limited to smart contracts as they can be verified on-chain. However, until scalability and UX become on par with that of Web2, the only realistic way for crypto to reach mass adoption is threw off-chain dApps. This creates the premise for a security bottleneck in the form of centralised APIs used for on-chain querying. Mel Project aims to expand on-chain security and decentralisation (consensus) to off-chain apps, basically achieving off-chain composability through trustless light clients. Earendil, the backbone of their ecosystem, designed to resist ISP-level censorship, is a decentralized anonymous communication and payment network that enables autonomous applications and true P2P protocols.Topics covered in this episode:Eric's background and founding Mel ProjectWhy Ethereum came shortIs Infura a security bottleneck?Liberating markets (and the Internet)Light clients and how Mel Project tackles themUse casesSmart contracts on Mel ProjectScaling the ‘world computer'Mel Project's consensus: StreamletWhy Mel Project chose an UTXO modelEarendil & ISP-level censorship resistanceRoadmapThe Geph VPNMel Project's low volatility (stable) coin$SYM: PoS tokenMisc.Episode links:Eric Tung on TwitterMel Project on TwitterGeph VPN on TwitterMoxie Marlinspike's 'My first impressions on web3' articleStreamlet BFT consensus modelSponsors:Gnosis: Gnosis builds decentralized infrastructure for the Ethereum ecosystem, since 2015. In this episode of the DeFi Download, Piers Ridyard talks with Nikita Ovchinnik, Co-Founder of Barter, a smart router for DeFi swap routes. They delve into Nikita's foray into crypto, the inner workings of Barter, the MEV problem and its possible solutions, and the importance of market makers. Summary Nikita describes his journey into crypto, which began in 2017 after initial scepticism. He eventually joined 1inch as their first outsider employee. Nikita describes 1inch's explosive growth during the DeFi Summer, as well as its focus on integrating with wallets and navigating the fundraising landscape until eventually securing investment from FTX. The conversation between Nikita and Piers dives next into Barter, exploring its role as a smart router program in the DeFi ecosystem. Barter is a decentralized protocol that provides transparent trade routes across liquidity providers like CoW Swap and UniswapX, minimizing costs and maximizing efficiency. Barter has over $4 billion processed on Ethereum. Key takeaways Understanding MEV: MEV stands for "Miner Extractable Value" and refers to the profit that miners can extract from the reordering of transactions and other manipulations in DeFi protocols. It occurs due to the way transactions are processed and confirmed, which can lead to arbitrage opportunities that benefit miners at the expense of regular users and liquidity providers. MEV has become a significant concern in Ethereum and other blockchain networks where DeFi activities are prevalent. Efforts to Mitigate MEV: Platforms like CoW Swap and UniswapX aim to reduce MEV by implementing strategies such as MEV blockers. These blockers prevent transaction details from being visible in public mempools, thereby limiting the ability of miners to front-run transactions or exploit price discrepancies for profit. By managing how transaction orders are processed and confirmed, these platforms attempt to minimize the negative impact of MEV on users and liquidity providers. Challenges and Future Directions: While MEV blockers represent a step towards mitigating MEV, the challenge remains complex and ongoing. Solutions such as batching and matching user orders across different DEX platforms without tapping directly into AMM liquidity provide users with better rates and lower gas costs, thereby making DeFi more efficient and less susceptible to MEV exploits. However, achieving these goals in a decentralized and efficient manner without reliance on centralized systems remains a significant hurdle. The Critical Role of Market Makers: While the transparency and fairness of traditional market makers on centralized exchanges is under question, advancements in DeFi and AMMs like those on Uniswap are improving liquidity provision to cryptocurrency markets. Despite the fact that market makers are necessary for efficient trading, newer DeFi protocols are offering competitive liquidity solutions, potentially reducing reliance on traditional market makers. In this episode, Rob continues his conversation with one of his top salespeople, Kane Baron. They discuss the dos and don'ts of lending money to family and friends, reveal the secrets to investing in watches and cars, and share valuable lessons on raising financially savvy kids! KEY TAKEAWAYS Lending money to family and friends can be risky; only do it if you're prepared to lose the money or the relationship. Consider giving the money as a gift instead. When investing in watches and cars, look for limited editions, good heritage, and scarcity to ensure the best returns. Teach your kids about money early on, as schools often fail to provide adequate financial education. Encourage them to start a company and learn how to manage their finances wisely. Cash is a liability, not an asset, as it depreciates in value over time. Invest in assets that produce income and protect your wealth from inflation. Centralised digital currencies could lead to a lack of competition and a social credit system, which may stifle creativity and reward laziness. Decentralised digital currencies offer more freedom and choice. If you become wealthy, be wise with your money. Consider being generous, but also know when to say no to protect your relationships and financial well-being. BEST MOMENTS "If you're going to lend money to friends and family, if you don't want to lose the money and you want to make a return, you have to get a first charge on their property. Which means you have to be prepared to repossess the ass of your mum or dad if they don't pay you back." "The thing that will teach kids about money is struggle with money. You can teach them about money like I do." "Money loves speed. Money always moves at its fastest. So that's why people exchange money instantly online now. That's why you like the tap of your Apple Pay because it's super fast. It's convenient and easy to store and not easy to thieve." "I do loads of stuff like that, and I don't ever tell anyone about that. So I like to make myself proud every day." Web2 file storage relies heavily on centralised entities, which have mostly outgrown their competitors, establishing a quasi-monopoly. The reasons for this are twofold: enormous operating costs and seamless user experience (e.g. social logins and account recovery), which, until recently, could only be solved through centralisation. Add to this the reluctance to change platforms as users need to re-upload their files, and you get an ossified user base. However, data leaks and hacks are a constant threat to users' privacy, and indicate the disruptive potential of decentralised file storage and sharing. We were joined by Andreas Tsamados & Vijay Krishnavanshi, co-founders of Fileverse, to discuss their decentralised file sharing solution and how they plan to disrupt the Web2 quasi-monopoly.Topics covered in this episode:Returning to the P2P roots of the InternetWeb2 vs. Web3 user experience (UX)Business models for Web2 dataDecentralising dataWeb3 data storageCosts of data storageManaging file updates and permissionsFileverse use casesThe business model of FileverseImproving UXFuture roadmapEpisode links:Andreas Tsamados on TwitterVijay Krishnavanshi on TwitterFileverse on TwitterSponsors:Gnosis: Gnosis builds decentralized infrastructure for the Ethereum ecosystem, since 2015. The very nature of Ethereum addresses, expressed as random hexadecimal character strings, represents a big hurdle for mass adoption, as they are not human-readable. ENS domains were envisioned to not only solve this and provide a seamless UX, but to also be the cornerstone of on-chain identities. However, in the current multichain landscape, a plethora of decentralised naming services arose, which led to a heterogeneous domain name pool. As a result, ENS aims to expand to L2s and non-EVM chains, attempting to provide consistency, in order to further reduce user friction and limit conflicting domain names. We were joined by Nick Johnson, founder of ENS, to discuss the current state of decentralised naming services from a multichain and L2 perspective, and how these ultimately tie into decentralised identities.Topics covered in this episode:Nick's background and ENS historyThe plethora of decentralised naming servicesENS use casesInteracting with Web2 DNSL2 compatibility for ENS via CCIP ReadENS wrapper and subdomainsCCIP ReadBridging ENS to non-EVM L2sCoinbase's cb.idENS and on-chain privacy OPSECAccount abstractionThe future of ENSGovernance Episode links:Nick Johnson on TwitterENS on TwitterThis episode is hosted by Sebastien Couture. Social media revolves around content creation, and while the content itself could be tokenised through NFTs, SocialFi aims to take it a step further. The recently released friend.tech app went to show that users might be interested in something more than just content - creator shares. This implicitly links back to handles and profiles, and we can slowly start to unveil the primitives of social media. Lens Protocol predates the friend.tech venture, in both timeline, as well as scope. While social media became synonymous with monopolistic central entities, Lens Protocol aims to build the decentralised bedrock for Web3's social layer. These primitives would not only be interoperable with any Web3 application, but they would redefine content creation, feed generation and monetisation. We were joined by Stani Kulechov, founder of Lens Protocol & Aave, to discuss decentralised social graphs and how to leverage smart contracts to build the primitives for Web3's social layer.Topics covered in this episode:The vision behind LensLens V2 and smart contract capabilitiesSocial media development platformDefining the Web3 social media primitiveFeed generation algorithm on LensIntegrating on-chain and off-chain infrastructureThe tragedy of the commons in decentralised social mediaCan a public good architecture also accommodate private goods?Growth model, sponsored transactions and monetisationGovernance and decentralised social mediaEpisode links: Stani Kulechov on TwitterLens Protocol on TwitterAave on TwitterThis episode is hosted by Friederike Ernst & Meher Roy.
