In this episode of Tendrils of Grief, we reconnect with Phil Pinti, a Marine Corps Veteran, Federal Government employee of 17 years, and an experienced recreational ultra runner. Phil, a graduate of West Chester University, resides in Ellicott City, Maryland, with his fiancée, Kellie, and their three children. The last time we spoke with Phil in June 2021, we were both in different places—personally and in our grief journeys. Since then, Phil has continued pushing his limits, taking on the grueling 2021 Desert RATS ultra-running endurance event, a six-day stage race covering 150 miles across the Kokopelli Trail from Fruita, Colorado, to Moab, Utah. His journey is featured in the documentary A Long Way From Nowhere, available on the Audacious Report YouTube channel, where runners share the physical and emotional discoveries that come with endurance racing. Join us as Phil reflects on his experiences with grief, resilience, and the life lessons he's gained through pushing his physical and mental limits in one of the most extreme endurance events in the world. UNE's Professor Karl Vernes and colleagues Dr Rex Mitchell and Professor Vera Weisbecker from Flinders University have recently published an article on the Conversation looking at the desert rat-kangaroo. Rediscovered in the 1930s, the creature was re-declared extinct in the 90s - but researchers think there's a good likelihood it still survives in pockets of habitat in the Sturt Stony Desert. Ash sits down with Professor Karl Vernes to discuss the creature, and the team's work on it's diet and existence. In their latest episode, Jen and Dyana chat with filmmaker and podcast host Chris Ward, whose podcast Like a Bigfoot recently reached 400 episodes. The show fosters a community of adventurers who chase exploration in nature, push personal limits, and achieve feats beyond what they once thought possible. Ward's documentary, A Long Way from Nowhere, captures the raw journey of a group of runners undertaking the grueling 150-mile Desert Rats stage race across some of the most unforgiving landscapes in Utah. The film delves deep into the resilience of the human spirit, examining why individuals are driven to test themselves in extreme conditions and what they discover about themselves along the way. This episode offers a profound look into the mindset of an adventurer, the transformative power of endurance, and the light that shines after the darkest moments. Fallon Rowe has been climbing since 2003 and coaching since 2013. After a decade of youth and collegiate competitions, she found her true passion for outdoor climbing – both sport and trad. She's spent her adult life pursuing climbing all over the world while offering (mostly) virtual coaching. In her words, she helps “climbers optimize their experience using mindset and mental performance techniques, like working on fear of falling, and analyzing movement and technique with video feedback and visualization.” Host Emily Chen-Newton and Fallon share a genetic collagen disorder (Ehlers-Danlos syndrome). In this conversation they talk how this condition impacts their climbing – and how Fallon coached Emily through some of these issues. Fallon also has a condition called, POTS which you'll hear mentioned in this episode. It's a dysfunction of the autonomic nervous system. Things that should be “automatic go haywire”, she says. So, her body doesn't properly regulate things like blood pressure, heart rate and temperature. Fallon's main symptom is lightheadedness or pre-syncope (the feeling you get before you faint). Fallon is also a rock-climbing guide and teaches courses on trad climbing, anchor building, and more. She is sponsored by The Desert Rat, Cypher Climbing, HILX Eyewear, and Crux Power. Her education as a geologist gives her a deep connection to nature, and she loves playing the fiddle, shooting pool, wandering the desert, writing and photographing climbing. We start this episode with Fallon talking about a recent time when she was digging into some of those "non climbing" hobbies as she was recovering from a tendon tweak. BUT, as she tells us, this injury hit differently than others in the past -- in a good way. *While Fallon Rowe and host Emily both discuss their medical conditions and how they've learned to live with them, this content is not, and does not replace medical advice. The exploits of the SAS in North Africa in the early years of the Second World War are well known; attacks behind enemy lines, destruction of hundreds of German aircraft on the ground and generally creating mayhem for the Afrika Korps. But little of this would have been possible without the Long Range Desert Group. Experts in desert navigation, the LRDG was formed to carry out deep penetration, covert reconnaissance patrols and intelligence missions behind Axis lines. As the commando tactics of the SAS developed, a reliable mode of transport to and from targets, often across hundreds of miles of desert, was provided by the LRDG to the SAS, using their ubiquitous 30 cwt Chevrolet trucks. Our speaker is Richard Pinches, whose father, Peter Pinches, served in North Africa with the 7th Armoured Division. Richard is a Second World War re-enactor and historian, specialising in the North African campaign and the LRDG. His talk covers the vital but often overlooked role of this uniquely skilled and capable unit of the Desert Rats.

Chris Ward is a podcaster (LIKE A BIGFOOT), teacher, endurance athlete, film producer, father, husband, and all-around good dude from the Denver area.Ward's new film, “A Long Way from Nowhere,” is now available on YouTube at The Audacious Report channel:What compels a person to run 150 miles through the desert at the height of summer? Is it the need for achievement, the competitive instinct, or something deeper? A LONG WAY FROM NOWHERE is a different sort of extreme sports film—one centered not around winning or extraordinary spectacle—but instead one focused upon the human spirit—on why individuals, knowingly or not, seek out some of the harshest climates on earth—in this case, southern Utah in June—and push themselves to, and sometimes beyond, the breaking point. Amongst the disparate cast of characters in this film is a veteran suffering from PTSD, a widowed single father, and a female police officer working in the field of human trafficking. Each undertakes the 150-mile Desert Rats stage race, each their darkest hour, and each, through the curious alchemy of extreme hardship and desert solitude, emerges with a new understanding of what it is to be human. Cale came to running as he signed up for his first sprint triathlon in 2011. He hated running and only ran when it involved team sports. It took several years to enjoy running as he often worked only on speed and trying to be faster. This often resulted in nagging injuries that curtailed his running. This cycle repeated itself until becoming selected for season 11 of Becoming Ultra. Learning the reasons behind different types of runs was critical. It allowed him to keep running and build up strength and stamina. He is a father of two boys Colin age 17 and Ian 15. Cale and Meghan will be celebrating 20 years of marriage on July 6th, 2022. Being able to share their long runs together is a big part of their relationship and helps them get out and enjoy Central Oregon and all its beautiful surroundings. Cale is passionate about developing leaders outside of running. He has two companies that he runs-Crestcom which is a leadership development franchise and B2B Transportation which is a full-service freight brokerage. He has coached youth basketball since 2011 and loves the game. Meghan picked up running when her kids were young. She would put them in the jogger, give them their snacks and drinks and hit the road! She has always been active and often attended group fitness classes prior to picking up running. She is an amazing wife and mother to two boys aged 15 and 17. She has a magnet on her fridge that she lives by."I create peacefullness in my mind, and my body reflects this peacefullness as perfect health." She enjoys cooking and helping her family lead a healthy lifestyle. She has been a nurse her whole life and currently works in ICU . She applied to Season 9 of Becoming Ultra and was not selected. It turned out to be a great thing because Cale and her both applied to Season 11 and were selected to run their first Ultra at Desert Rats 50k in April of this year. She finished her first Ultra in just over 7 hours. She loved it so much she signed up for season 12's event to cheer and support them in their journey to complete their first Ultra. She recently set a PR in a road half of 1:51:47 and beat Cale who also PRed at 1:53:46. She is sneaky fast when she wants to be. She will tell you she is not competitive but every now and then it comes out and she starts taking souls out on the course! Meghan and Cale recently completed R2R and are looking at when they will do R2R2R or R3. They are signed up for Jacks 50K race in Florida and look forward to supporting season 12 runners on their inaugural 50k. We had such a great time catching up with our friends Cale and Meghan. They are another awesome couple we met through the Becoming Ultra Community who share the love of trail running together. We talk about their ultra-journey and the impact it has had on both their family life and careers. Cale talks about how his job stress was the catalyst for a life change. I was personally so inspired by this. Cale and Meghan have a very supportive relationship. Hearing them talk about how they balance everything will make you feel empowered. Meghan also shares how she keeps peacefulness in her life. This one will leave you feeling encouraged and motivated.

"I want to disbelieve..." could be an alternate title to this episode, as we explore the other side of the other. The Desert Rat was impressed about the sheer volume of time and effort that has been put in to refute something that supposedly doesn't even exist, and wants to share his findings. FIFTH SUMMER REPLAY!!! This week we dive into the Desert RATS Stage Race with six tales from previous episodes that hopefully capture the essence of this wonderful adventure (mostly because the 2022 edition is happening right now and I have had major envy and FOMO for all those folks battling the desert!!) Hope you all enjoy!!!
Reminisce with The Desert Rat today as we review the fictional lands created by master author Piers Anthony! His novels span the time from the late 1950s until today with a large and well deserved following. High up on The Rats recommended reading list, His subject matter is largely family friendly but also fearless in discussing the issues that plague mankind.
Episode 300!!! This week I'm celebrating the milestone by hanging out with three amazing dudes I met as a direct result of starting this project. Thomas Mullins, Phil Pinti, Paul Scheuring and I met back in 2018 at the Desert RATS stage race and have taken on many adventures since then. Truly meeting these three has been an absolute honor and I couldn't find anything more fitting to end "Season One" then diving deep on concepts of adventure and purpose with them! This episode is really a two parter: Part one- all three of us discuss what led us to long endurance events in the wilderness and how we've grown through them. Part two- Phil and I discuss where I'm going with the show and why I'm taking a three month break from new episodes (I will be putting out replays of some of my favorite ones throughout the summer though!!) Hope you all enjoy and thank you, thank you, THANK YOU for three hundred wonderful episodes!!!
Bad boys! What cha gonna do when the blah, blah, whatever those next words are, comes for you! Let's ride along vvith the various agencies of our fine nation as they kill people and break things, no, wait, that's the military! I meant to say, as they protect and serve their jurisdictions under the steely eye of the camera. This property has been a fan favorite for decades.
Cale and Meghan followed the training, put the work in and sacrificed when needed for a big goal and we couldn't be happier for them. Listen to the post race recap from the Desert RATS 50k in Fruita, Colorado!
Travel back vvith The Desert Rat today as vve take a look at the Unsolved Mysteries property, and revievv the life of one of its hosts, Robert Stack.
