In part one of our conversation, Dr. Ahmad shared his journey from a professor of Accounting who struggled with his teaching to 3M National Teaching Fellow - Canada's most prestigious recognition of teaching at the post-secondary level to director of the MacPherson Institute at McMaster University and now to the ultimate leadership role at LUMS. In part two, he shares concrete ideas, strategies, and actions he has taken as Vice Chancellor that are informed by his previous role as an educational developer and faculty members. His story provides an answer to the question of what happens when you an educational developer in charge of a major institution with the resources to enact meaningful change--without giving too much away, amazing things happen. His story is of interest to all educational developers but will be particularly inspiring to those on the path to provost, president, or other distinguished leadership positions in higher education. Dr. Ahmad completed his PhD in Educational Psychology at McGill University and was a Professor of Finance at Concordia University in Montreal, Canada for over 20 years. In 2014, he was appointed Vice-Provost, Teaching and Learning and Director of the MacPherson Institute at McMaster University.

It's hard to believe, but until recently there had never been a large field trial that addressed these simple and obvious questions: 1. When ordinary people wear face masks, does it actually reduce the spread of respiratory diseases? 2. And if so, how do you get people to wear masks more often? It turns out the first question is remarkably challenging to answer, but it's well worth doing nonetheless. Among other reasons, the first good trial of this prompted Maha Rehman - Policy Director at the Mahbub Ul Haq Research Centre - as well as a range of others to immediately use the findings to help tens of millions of people across South Asia, even before the results were public. Links to learn more, summary and full transcript. The groundbreaking Bangladesh RCT that inspired her to take action found that: * A 30% increase in mask wearing reduced total infections by 10%. * The effect was more pronounced for surgical masks compared to cloth masks (plus ~50% effectiveness). * Mask wearing also led to an increase in social distancing. * Of all the incentives tested, the only thing that impacted mask wearing was their colour (people preferred blue over green, and red over purple!). The research was done by social scientists at Yale, Berkeley, and Stanford, among others. It applied a program they called 'NORM' in half of 600 villages in which about 350,000 people lived. NORM has four components, which the researchers expected would work well for the general public: N: no-cost distribution O: offering information R: reinforcing the message and the information in the field M: modeling Basically you make sure a community has enough masks and you tell them why it's important to wear them. You also reinforce the message periodically in markets and mosques, and via role models and promoters in the community itself. Tipped off that these positive findings were on the way, Maha took this program and rushed to put it into action in Lahore, Pakistan, a city with a population of about 13 million, before the Delta variant could sweep through the region. Maha had already been doing a lot of data work on COVID policy over the past year, and that allowed her to quickly reach out to the relevant stakeholders ? getting them interested and excited. Governments aren't exactly known for being super innovative, but in March and April Lahore was going through a very deadly third wave of COVID ? so the commissioner quickly jumped on this approach, providing an endorsement as well as resources. Together with the original researchers, Maha and her team at LUMS collected baseline data that allowed them to map the mask-wearing rate in every part of Lahore, in both markets and mosques. And then based on that data, they adapted the original rural-focused model to a very different urban setting. The scale of this project was daunting, and in today's episode Maha tells Rob all about the day-to-day experiences and stresses required to actually make it happen ? including challenges like sending out 24 million masks to cover all of Lahore. They also discuss: * The challenges of data collection in this context * Disasters and emergencies she had to respond to in the middle of the project * What she learned from working closely with the Lahore Commissioner's Office * How to get governments to provide you with large amounts of data for your research * How she adapted from a more academic role to a 'getting stuff done' role * How to reduce waste in government procurement * And much more Get this episode by subscribing to our podcast on the world's most pressing problems and how to solve them: type 80,000 Hours into your p

Kids Bedtime Stories

Rayman Snuggle down and cosy up, for tonight you embark on a wild adventure with Rayman and the Incrediballs. You find yourself in a large underground passage beneath the floor of a castle. A strange, blue light illuminates the stone walls, cobwebs and old bones that litter the ground. Ahead of you a small, green fluffy-like creature is jiggling in the air. It's pointing a beam of bright, white light towards the wall. This is Vern, your Seeker, who has rushed ahead and is impatient for you to catch up.   Intrigued, and never disappointed by Vern's finds, you catch up keen to see what has been found. High above the floor and balanced precariously on a huge iron-clad length of timber, is a Teensie in a cage. These magical creatures are always imprisoned in hard-to-find places. With no hesitation, you run towards a wooden platform positioned just below where the Teensie is trapped.  You leap onto the platform and bounce off to get to the cage. You smash it open and the Teensie escapes. As it flees, you are rewarded with tiny balls of golden light that appear to have wings. Unsure what to do with them, you keep them safe in your pouch.  You are about to jump down when you realise that Vern has gone even higher. Above you the ceiling forms a tall, narrow shaft and Vern is at the top. Bouncing from one side of the shaft to the other, you reach Vern and find a cache of golden coins. They carry the image of a human skull and remind you of pirate treasure. You quickly retrieve them and drop back down into the passage. You notice that Vern is looking tired and may not be able to stay with you for much longer. Even so, Vern leads the way once more. Suddenly, the passageway is flooded with light and you see a scattering of old bones. Vern is hovering over it and looks very excited. Without your trusty Seeker's guidance, you would've ignored this area of the floor. Instead, you jump with all your might on the pile of bones, and they give way. You fall only a short distance and land in a tunnel that forks two ways, left and right. Your instinct is to go right, but Vern is shining a light to the left. You follow Vern's lead and find the tunnel ends quite abruptly. Chained to the wall is a very excited looking Teensie. You release the Teensie and receive more of the curious golden balls as a reward. You turn around to celebrate the moment only to discover you are alone. Vern has returned to the Sacred Tree to rest. As you continue your journey alone, you discover a section of the floor has been replaced by another large piece of iron-clad timber. You run onto it and jump. It rotates, dropping you into the chamber beneath. Here you find another Teensie. This one is tied to a wooden pole and is very pleased to see you. You untie the Teensie and receive your reward. You miss your friend but are delighted to have found a Teensie without the help of Vern.  You push the piece of timber to get it out of your way. It returns to a horizontal position above your head. You can't go back the way you came in now, so continue down this new passage. After a while it stops at the entrance to a large chamber that glows with a pure, golden light.  You can hear a faint humming sound. As you enter the large underground chamber, you are intrigued to find that a blue creature with a long trunk has joined you. This is Sniff. Infront of you, filling the chamber, are hundreds of the tiny, winged balls. They are radiating a beautiful golden light and the air is filled with the sound of their tiny wings buzzing. Sniff explains that these are Lums and are very precious.  On the ground, beneath the Lum filled air, there are lots of rotund, pink pigs ambling about. Sniff explains that they will allow you to jump on their backs. They will bounce you high into the air so you can catch the Lums. Although you are initially concerned for the pigs, Sniff assures you that they are glad to help; the buzzing of the Lums' tiny wings annoys them. You jump onto the first pig's back and are launched, as if on a trampoline, high into the air. The pig squeals with delight as you and Sniff sail through the air capturing Lums. You bounce from pig to pig and soon the chamber is filled with the sound of the pigs delighted squealing.  The Lums you miss are easily captured by Sniff's long trunk and soon, you have captured them all.  Near the exit from the chamber, you see there is only one pig left. It is standing beneath a torn tapestry that hangs from the wall. You can see a light emanating from behind the tapestry and wonder if you have missed some of the Lums. You jump onto the pig's back and, now expertly, navigate the high reaches of the chamber. But, instead of finding more Lums, you find crystals. They are a beautiful sky-blue colour, and you collect them quickly. You are pleased because these are the first crystals you've found. As you leave the chamber, you realise that Sniff has left, and you are alone once more. Like Vern, Sniff has returned to the Sacred Tree to rest, exhausted by all the hard work. You too are beginning to tire, but you have one last task to perform.  Leaving the chamber, you find you are in the courtyard of the castle. The surrounding walls are very high and are patrolled by guards. Ahead of you, a wooden path rises into the air and leads to a large nest containing a beautiful silver egg. You have found what you are looking for but, in your rush to get to the egg, you make too much noise. The sound of your footsteps alerts the guards, and they drop one by one onto the path before you. You see they are skeleton pirates. They have long swords and an evil laugh but are easily defeated. You run into the first one and it breaks into a cloud of bones before disappearing into the air. Your confidence has been boosted, and you crash through the rest, scattering them easily. The path is now clear and you can easily reach the nest. You sit down on the path and stare up at the egg. The day has grown old, and the sun is beginning to set behind the castle walls. The silver surface of the egg catches the last of the sunlight and sparkles like a huge diamond. You know that an egg like this will grow the Sacred Tree 20 metres and will contain a very special Incrediball. The day's work has been exhilarating, but you're glad it's coming to an end. You're tired now.  With the wooden path beneath you and surrounded by the warm air, you find somewhere to settle. The Sacred Tree is too far away for you to reach now; however, the gardens of the castle offer shade and comfort.  You perch on a lower branch of a comfortable looking tree. The air thickens and cools as you slowly close your eyes and drift off, awaiting your next adventure.  Narrated by Cate BarrWritten by Chris Winson-LongleyDialogue Editor: Ian AbeEdited and produced by Magdoos Media Limited© 2021 Magdoos Media Limited - All Right Reserved.★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★

Born to a poor, landless farmer in the month of the monsoon rains, twins Zara and Tara grow up amongst the fields of wheat and cotton in a remote village in Pakistan. During an afternoon spree of games, Tara is kidnapped from the fields and raped. All seems to be resolved after her parents accept an unexpected marriage proposal for their "dishonoured" daughter. But the nightmare resurfaces when a newspaper clipping emerges, calling the union into question. The Role of Dynasties and Caste in Politics In a previous episode of the podcast, Dr. Adil Najam made a very important point that underneath all divides in Pakistan is the class divide. That is a very important point and one could argue that this divide is anchored by the caste divide in the country, particularly in Punjab and Sindh. However, both caste and class are absent from the daily political and economic discourse in the country. To talk about this issue, Uzair hosted Dr. Hassan Javid, who is an Associate Professor of Sociology at LUMS. He has done phenomenal research on democratization and the relationship between class, power, and the state. Tabadlab brought together education experts and policy leaders to analyse the costs and benefits attached to the crucial decision of reopening schools. Featured Panelists Mehnaz Akbar Aziz is a member of the National Assembly of Pakistan and Founding Director of Children’s Global Network Pakistan Dr. Ayesha Razzaque is an Education Researcher and Consultant, and currently works as a Technical Consultant and Senior Sector Specialist in Education at UNDP, Pakistan Dr. Faisal Bari is the Interim Dean at the School of Education (SOE) at LUMS. He also serves as the Director and Senior Research Fellow at IDEAS. Nadya Karim-Shaw is the Portfolio Manager for Pakistan’s Girls’ Education Challenge grants and formerly the Country Representative for World Learning in Pakistan. Maj (R) Aurangzeb Badini is the Deputy Commissioner of Quetta. Discussion Summary Coronavirus Trajectory Some stakeholders in Pakistan’s education system, including students, point at the declining coronavirus cases in the country as sufficient grounds for reopening schools. Others believe that Pakistan should brace itself for another surge in cases, which could potentially be triggered by the reopening of schools and would cause another inevitable disruption to the education cycle. Risk vs. Reward Should schools be reopened when the lives of students, teachers, staff and the community at large are still at risk due to the pandemic? The myth that children and young adults are immune to the coronavirus has been proven wrong. In these extraordinary circumstances, is it more important to sustain learning outcomes or curb the spread of the virus? Institutional Capacity The Covid-19 pandemic differs from other disasters such as earthquakes and floods as its impact spans the course of many months or years. Are teachers and support staff ready to implement SOPs in schools? How will district administrations monitor the implementation of these SOPs, and who will be held responsible if something goes wrong? Does the government have the capacity to monitor private schools as well as madrassas? Financial Constraints The reopening of schools amidst a pandemic will require the adoption of new SOPs, use of protective equipment and training of teachers and staff. Without significant funds, schools will struggle to carry out these measures. Is the government’s education budget sufficient to implement these reforms in public schools? With no financial package announced for private schools, will parents be forced to bear the cost? Unequal Opportunities The inaccessibility of EdTech for the majority of students in Pakistan is a compelling argument for the reopening of schools. However, even after schools reopen, factors such as the number of students per class, size of campus and availability of protective equipment will give some schools an advantage over others. How can policymakers ensure that the existing education divide is not exacerbated after the reopening? Learning Losses Covid-19 has brought about a new host of challenges for Pakistan’s educators. Due to the prolonged closure of schools, teachers will struggle to bring students up to speed. Coupled with a physically restrictive learning environment, is it realistic to assume that learning will be the same as it was before the pandemic? Our speakers discuss whether schools should consider relaxing student learning outcomes. As we continue our tour on the Eerie USA, we come across some smaller states, naturally. But that doesn’t mean they’re any less deserving of a spot on our tour – Hell, some of them have the best legends and stories. Sadly though, well maybe not sadly, but for lack of a better word, we’ll use that, many of these stories have to do with hauntings or spirits. Now, I promise you I’ll do my best to find things other than those. However, Delaware isn’t one of those cases – I do have a haunting for you today, and that comes in the form of Lums Pond State Park. The park is home to the largest freshwater pond in the state, and is a gorgeous place for recreational activities such as camping, hiking, oh, and of course murder. What good ghost story doesn’t start with the demise of a poor innocent. In this instant that poor innocent was a young girl. Way back in the 1800’s a young girl ran away from home, who knows why, but she did. And it would be a decision that she would ultimately regret. The story goes that while attempting to find some kind of shelter in the park, she was found, raped, and murdered. A truly gruesome end to a young life. Despite the authorities finding her body in a timely fashion, the killer was never caught. If that isn’t the origins to a ghost story, I don’t know what is. I know, I know, I gave away a lot there, but there’s more, trust me. You’ll just have to listen to find out more. Our sponsor: www.morbidlybeautiful.comYouTube: Horror ShotsTwitch: www.twitch.tv/horrorshotsplaysWebsite: www.horrorshots.comInstagram: horrorshotsphotographyTwitter: @horrorshotspodFacebook: HorrorshotsPatreon: www.patreon.com/horrorshot See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

But now they have become entrepreneurship evangelists which involves incubating entrepreneurship and creating an entrepreneurship ecosystem.    Faisal Sherjan has been a founding spirit of Geo and venture capital funds in UK and is now managing the LUMS incubator for entrepreneurship while he is also investing in a number of startups.  Kurram Zafar has set up successful startups in Silicon Valley and  has been involved in many ventures in Pakistan. He set up the Plan 9 incubator and the LUMS incubator and has now developed the first venture capital fund for Pakistan. Listen to these to entrepreneurs talk about the entrepreneurship, How to think like an entrepreneur; How you can find opportunities; How to do a startup; What and incubator is and how it can help you; What is an entrepreneurial ecosystem is and why it is necessary; What is needed in policy to support entrepreneurship.  Listen and learn and as always comment, discusses and debate.  Stay Curious! Listen to this fascinating discussion. There is much to learn and research here.  You can also look at my book “Looking Back: How Pakistan Became an Asian Tiger in 2050” now available in hard copy in Pakistan. Soft copy here.  http://www.libertybooks.com/index.php?route=product/search&search=Nadeem%20ul%20haque&category_id=0 Listen and learn and write some papers on this subject.  Don’t forget to cite Soch Bichar Please subscribe to Soch Bichar if you like it. Tell you friends about it. That is the only way to grow a public discussion. And we need a wider conversation on these important subjects.

The New York Times has called Mr. Syed Babar Ali not just an institution builder in Pakistan, but an institution himself: helping to build industry when the nation was just born by starting some of the country’s first and most successful companies. Some of those institutions include the first and now largest packaging company, Packages Limited, one of the first milk processing companies, Milk Pak Limited, which later became Nestle Pakistan, the largest food processing company, and of course, LUMS university, which the NYT has called the Harvard University of Pakistan. He has also profoundly matured Pakistan’s business ecosystem by bringing in various multinationals through joint venture partnerships, including Tetra Pak Pakistan, Siemens Pakistan, Coca-Cola Pakistan and Sanofi-Aventis Pakistan. And in addition to all of this, his social work also includes Ali Institute of Education, Naqsh School of Arts, Ali Institute of Technical Education, and Sydenwala Schools. He is also one of our investors and advisors at Amal, and supports various other education institutions like Aitchison College, Kinnaird College and Lahore School of Economics. We couldn’t be more grateful for the unspeakable work he has done to build this country and it’s people, for his never ending curiosity to learn from others and to believe in their journey, and for the example that he’s set for each of us on what it means to live a life of purpose. *Building Pakistan is brought to you by the team at Amal Academy (amalacademy.org), with support from +Acumen (plusacumen.org) as our distribution partner.
