Did you know Gen Zers will spend 19.2 years of their life on their phone? We might just be losing our minds to our screens, but there's something we can do about it. Digital Dementia is a real term coined in 2012 by neuroscientist Dr. Manfred Spitzer, which refers to cognitive decline caused by excessive screen use, often mimicking symptoms of early dementia like forgetfulness, mental fatigue, and attention issues. Doesn't seem possible that it could be happening to people in their 20's and 30's but it can, and it is.Elliot admits he's addicted to his phone and shares a recent story about a lapse in memory that made him realize just how serious the problem really is. Sam and Elliot share their theory on connection being the antidote, and how spaces like The Company in Denver that are organically creating the kind of environment that can get us off our screens, help us to recover cognitively, and return to real life.Support the show by becoming a member of the Something More Society and gain access to exclusive episodes and more intimate ways of connecting.Stay Connected with Sam & ElliotLeave us a voicemail here! Grab your "A Little More Humani-tea" & shop our other merch!Follow us on Instagram & TikTok Articles we discussed in this episode:Understanding Digital Dementia and Cognitive Impact in the Current Era of the Internet

"There's something called Digital Dementia, it's the high reliance on your devide remembering things for you. It should be very concerning that we've lost the ability to remember a phone number or a pin number, or something we just read. Two of the most costly words in business are "I forgot": I forgot that meeting, that conversation, that meeting. On the other side, memory will make you money. We live in an expert economy where people will pay you money for what you know. If you can learn how to focus, remember, read and retain you can apply that towards anything. The most important skill we can all focus on is learning how to learn." Jim Kwik was once known as the “boy with the broken brain.” A childhood head injury at age five left him struggling in school. For a while, he even believed he could never be as good as other kids when it came to learning. Jim loved superheroes as a kid – and comic books saved him when conventional education couldn't. Comic books taught Jim how to read…and they also kept his dreams alive that one day he, too, would find his inner superpower. Jim discovered that, no matter the circumstances, we can rebuild our brains. And after working on himself, he realized his brain was not broken…it just needed a better owner's manual. This shattered Jim's own limiting beliefs – and over time, it became his passion to help others do the same. For the past three decades, Jim taught his learning techniques to students from universities such as Harvard, CalTech, and Singularity University. As well as executives and employees from companies such as Google, Virgin, Nike, Zappos, GE, 20th Century Fox, Cleveland Clinic, WordPress, and institutions like the United Nations to get the most out of work and life. The Cognitive State of the World   In psychoimmunology, cortisol and adrenaline are the two killers. Stress, fear, and anxiety are the biggest factors in neurological and immune functions.   We're all gonna get sick at some point, so it's about taking care of the body. Supplementation is not an option, it's essential now.   Modern life and Covid19 response made us disconnected too much from natural things.    We are nutritionally depleted, socially disconnected, stressed out. The best therapy is live interaction—getting yourself around friends, doing things you love to do, laughing.    What Digital Devices and Social Media Do to Our Brains   Our eyes and ears get tens of thousands of pieces of information every second but our brain cannot process it all—our biggest problem is how we filter that (our bias).   Everyone has bias—it's called mindset. And that's why it's very important.   Default Mode Network and Digital Dementia   95% of our life is controlled by our subconscious. Most people try to make changes at the conscious level. But we go on default mode all the time.   19:38 Digital Dementia and Sleep   When people with digital dementia sleeps, instead of being in delta, they flip and became high beta (the wide awake state) while sleeping. This causes a dysregulated brain which can lead to dementia and Alzheimer's if not fixed. While high delta while awake can help lessen brain fog, anxiety, memory loss, stress.   If we don't sleep well, we don't detox our brain. During the day, the body shuts down mainly because there's a lot of inflammation from the we eat to the toxin exposure.   Brain Tap Technology   Applying different frequencies on each ear with matching lights to prompt the brain to synchronize Dr. Porter's Best Medicine: Getting the brain right each day.

This episode is for parents who want to be sure that technology doesn't harm their child and family. I have tons of mommy friends and my patients as well, who complain that their child spends too much time on the screens, won't step out to play ball, or socialize with friends except during school. And now with the pandemic even that has ended. It's all over the social media, moms asking in various FB (Facebook support groups), “Is it OK if my 2 year old doesn't eat without the television?” “My toddler loves playing games on the iPad for hours on end and he's good at it too. Do I need to worry?” I think most of us know the answer to that. But for those of us who still live under a rock, NO it's not fine when your two year old is glued to the screens. It has a huge impact on their developing brain. Another reason SHOW NOTES 1. Here i am going to discuss the American academy of pediatrics -recommended screen time for kids of all age groups. Tangible tips on how to handle toddlers and their addiction to screens? 2. ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE DEVICES like Alexa or OK google have paved a way into our homes. They make life so much easier for us adults but what about our younger ones who are exposed to it from such a young age? How to stop devices from replacing you in their memories? Yes it's happening and we aren't even aware of it. 3. EMOTIONAL HAZARDS of social media use among teenagers. Teens have the ability to alter any and every detail about themselves using various social media apps and they get to see the results first hand. Validation in the form of likes and comments only leads to increased dissatisfaction with one's true self. 4. How can we deal with this in a positive way so our teenagers are able to handle themselves better on social media and not get affected by the opinion of their peers or the world? 5. Have you heard of the term called- TECH NECK SYNDROME If you spend hours hunching over a computer or staring down at a smartphone, you've likely been plagued with the pain known as "tech neck." The condition is caused by repeatedly craning your head down and forward to look at a screen, applying excess pressure on bones and muscles. 6. DIGITAL DEMENTIA- It is non Alzheimer's type dementia that occurs in younger individuals. Your children may be at risk for Digital Dementia if they spend hours per day seated in front of technological devices with poor posture and little movement. You will find some amazing tips and practical advice to deal with the menace of social media and screens. Do subscribe to my podcast so you will be notified each time a new episode is online. Dr. Krista Burns is the co-founder of the American Posture Institute and author of The Posture Principles: Posture by Design, not by Circumstance. In today’s episode, she offers a completely unique idea: Digital Dementia, a concept that defines how technology and the overuse of digital media is affecting our brains and de-evolving our posture. This is a relevant and eye-opening conversation, which aims to bring more awareness to the stresses that affect our modern-day functioning and physiology.    In this show you will hear about: Technique and neurological disorders, Cognitive decline as a result of the overuse of technology,  The average time children are spending on technology every day (and what is recommended). How the use of technology impacts our brains. Recognizing tech fatigue.  Viable solutions to families. Key Takeaways: [5:45] Dr. Krista talks about her personal and professional journey.  [7:26] Postural changes and how they are affecting us. [10:04] Research shows that there is a decline in cognition as a result of our posture while using technology. [10:55] Children born in the digital age are predisposed to dementia and cognitive decline. [12:30] Infants should not be exposed to screens. [12:38] After the age of 6 children should not spend more than two hours a day on devices and yet the average child uses devices for 7 hours a day. [13:43] You do not have to get rid of your devices, but exercise healthy boundaries. [15:18] The connection piece: our communication has dramatically changed in the digital age. [16:27] If your children are showing signs of withdrawal, it is because there is an addiction. [17:24] When you are doing fun things you forget that you are not on your device. [18:14] Three signs of tech-fatigue: 1. Technique posture. 2. Is your family spending more than two hours a day with their devices for recreational use? 3. Behavioral changes. [22:08] How our brains are being stimulated by using technology. [23:50] What happens to your brain when you are surrounded by nature and moving your body. [25:29] Practical ways to safeguard our children from digital dementia:  1. Take Digital detox doses. 2. Monitor screen time. 3. Take posture breaks. 4. Move more. [32:30] Dr. Krista recommends blue light blockers. [33:55] Blue light is affecting our melatonin levels. [35:18] Dr. Krista talks about the active sitting solution. This week I'm excited to welcome Dr Krista Burns. Krista is a certified postural neurologist, certified posture expert, a doctor of chiropractic, and she has a PhD in global health policy. So, she has a few qualifications. She is also a highly sought-after speaker and author of the textbook, The Posture Principles. Her goal is to inspire audiences worldwide to understand the importance of posture—which, as you may know, is declining rapidly with the speed of technology. Questions we ask in this episode: What is Digital Dementia and why should we be aware of it? What are your suggestions for those of us with desk-bound jobs? Can we build in specific movements into our exercise routine with postural decline in mind? https://180nutrition.com.au/product/ This week, I'm excited to welcome Dr. Krista Burns, who is the co-founder of The American Posture Institute. Dr. Krista has made a life's work to help others learn every detail about posture and how to become posture experts in their communities. She routinely travels the world teaching the importance of posture and how to address the issues arising from our ever expanding digital lifestyles. In this episode, we talk about how to safeguard ourselves against digital dementia and the strategies that we can utilize to combat postural and cognitive decline. Now, there is definitely something for every one of us in this conversation. So without further ado over to Dr. Krista. Hey guys, this is Stu from 180 Nutrition and I am delighted to welcome Dr. Krista to the podcast. Dr Krista, how are you? Krista 01:39 Oh, I'm doing so good. Thank you so much for this opportunity to chat today. Stu 01:42 No, we're really, really intrigued to pick your brains on your specialist topic. So before we get into that and first step for all of our listeners that may not be familiar with you, I would love it if you could just tell them a little bit about yourself. Krista: 01:58 Absolutely. My name is Dr. Krista Burns and I'm the co-founder of The American Posture Institute. And at The American Posture Institute we teach healthcare providers how to become the go-to posture experts in their community. Now, how I got my start originally was from an injury. Many of us go through either a health crisis or an injury ourselves that then leads us down the path of health care. So I originally wanted to be an Olympic skier. That was my first love, my first goal, my first dream and passion and was well on my way. I was Olympic bound, I was competing on US development ski team, suffered an injury in my spine. And from there I just became obsessed with helping people with back pain because that was something that prevented me from achieving my goals and dreams. And I didn't want back pain to hold other people back. So fast forward, graduated from school, created The American Posture Institute with signature postural correction systems to help, not just with back pain, but overall function, structure, and neurology of the body to help us live healthier lives. And then we'll talk more about digital dementia. But what we started noticing is that postural decline is also associated with neurologic defects. So we'll dive deeper into that throughout today's discussion. 03:11 Fantastic. Yeah, interesting story. And so you mentioned digital dementia and I am really, really interested in that at the moment and partly because tech has changed wildly since I was a boy. And now it seems that we're beholden to these mobile devices that are physically changing the way that we're thinking and they're rewiring our brains. But they're also changing our posture too because we get this crazy downward stoop all hours where we're hunched over our desks and perhaps we're not as active as we used to be. So first up, I'd love for you to give me a little bit of rundown of what digital dementia actually is and why you think that we should be aware of it. Krista 04:01 Absolutely. Well, at The American Posture Institute, we say that posture is declining at the speed of technology. And so just as fast as technology is evolving, we're seeing a de-evolution of human function and structure. So what digital dementia is, is digital dementia is non-Alzheimer's specific, dementia like symptoms in adolescents caused from the overstimulation of technology combined with poor lifestyle habits. Let me break that apart because I just said a big phrase. So it's non- Alzheimer's meaning that it's not due to physical changes in your brain associated with certain proteins or genes, however it's acquired. If we were to look up the word dementia with the Alzheimer's association, what it would tell us is that dementia is not a specific disease, it's a set of symptoms associated with poor focus, short term memory loss with poor visual focus as well, and confusion with daily activities. And so if you've ever felt confusion, short term memory loss, inability to focus, these are tightening early dementia like symptoms and now it's caused from the overstimulation of technology combined with poor lifestyle habits. So I'd be a hypocrite if I said we just needed to get rid of technology together. We're actually connecting from across the world because of our ability to connect via tech. And we love that. We love the opportunities that technology has provided to us as a human species. However, we need to recognize the limitations associated with it as well. When we're overstimulated from our technology, it's stimulating certain parts of our brain. But when we're sedentary, when we have poor posture and we're overstimulated from technology, we're under stimulating other parts of our brains. We'll pick that part a little bit more. But what this is resulting in is dementia like symptoms of confusion, learning disorders, short term memory loss in children as young as eight, nine, 10 years old. And now they're growing up in a world where it's normal to have technology from the time you're born up through adulthood. The difference between us, Stu, and children now is that we didn't have technology as a big part of our lives until later on. Until we were adults, right? Whereas infants now are born into a world where they get that digital babysitter. So I think it's really important that we have this discussion now, not to get rid of technology, not to blame technology, but to recognize our ability to pay it forward to the next generation, the importance of having healthy lifestyle habits associated with technology. Here, at TEA of Life Podcast, we want you to do life better...YOUR life better, and we want to give you the encouragement and tools you need in order to achieve this. This week, I talk about a video that's being shared around Facebook about the effects of using cell phones. They call this effect, Digital Dementia, and their purpose is to persuade you to stop using your cell phone so often. Although I agree with lowering the use of our digital devices, I am not sure that I agree with some of their reasoning.  The video that I talk about starts out with slow, emotional piano music and a guy who looks like he about to have a nervous breakdown. I'm sure you've seen it. He says that he cannot even imagine what the rates of suicide, homicide, rates of depression, and accidental deaths due to overdose is going to look like in the future. He is blaming all of this on the use of cell phones. After this scene is over, it automatically goes to another guy who introduces the Digital Dementia word that spawned the name of this episode. He says that we rely on our smartphones so much, that it is making us stupid. Now, I have watched other videos of people who talk about how they don't need to know certain things because Google can tell them anything they need to know, so I understand where these comments are coming from, and this is similar to a conversation that my husband and I have had together before, but, this guy in the video is saying that we have lost the ability to memorize phone numbers, and he's referring to pretty much everyone in this statement. He equates this to having our arm in a sling for 6 months and the muscles atrophy because they are not being used. He implies that using our phones to keep our schedules and to-do lists is not using our brain muscles to remember things. It seems that he's assuming that we aren't filling our brain with other things instead. Visit teaoflifepodcast.com for show notes, links, and a transcript of this show.

Here, at TEA of Life Podcast, we want you to do life better...YOUR life better, and we want to give you the encouragement and tools you need in order to achieve this. This week, I talk about a video that’s being shared around Facebook about the effects of using cell phones. I’m sure you’ve seen it. Now, I have watched other videos of people who talk about how they don’t need to know certain things because Google can tell them anything they need to know, so I understand where these comments are coming from, and this is similar to a conversation that my husband and I have had together before, but, this guy in the video is saying that we have lost the ability to memorize phone numbers, and he’s referring to pretty much everyone in this statement. Does the thought of giving a speech without notes terrify you? Chances are you are suffering from digital dementia, the inability of perfectly normal healthy people to memorise and recall. Check out the new campaign to fight digital dementia. http://www.pozible.com/project/204106 My name is Bill Aronson. I am a memory coach. My team want to show you how you can reverse digital dementia and age-related forgetfulness.  To date, I have trained more than seventy Tasmanians and the results are remarkable. As Jim Kwik, one of my memory coaches says, "There is no such thing as a poor memory only an untrained one." Once you know the techniques, whatever your age, your memory starts to improve. Come on this journey and transform your ability to remember. As your memory improves, so does your self-confidence and your ability to imagine your future. In 2015, I became interested in improving my memory. I noticed that it was not as sharp as it used to be. I had particular trouble recalling names. Then I realised that this was a common problem. We are all prone to digital dementia, the inability of perfectly healthy people to remember names, numbers, lists, street directions, pin numbers, passwords and all the other vital details of our lives. There is an unintended and significant cost of moving our memory into the Cloud and that is our memory is declining.  Memory is not something that you have; it is something that you do.  As we age, our memory declines. We assume that is normal and inevitable. It is not.  I work helping others to double their memory. I am amazed at the capacity of the brain to adapt and change. Tell it that it is in decline and it declines. Tell your mind that this is not helpful and it improves. Neuroplasticity is a beautiful gift. My memory is far better than it was years ago only because of tips I will share with you.   I have also appeared on ABC radio where I recited the first 50 decimal places of Pi. You can listen to the interview with Ryk Godard by clicking the image above or here. https://soundcloud.com/936-abc-hobart/man-never-lo... My website at www.billaronson.com.au is devoted to all things to do with improving memory.I have written a short ebook  - The Lost Art of How to Find Things - which is now ready for publication.   Challenges The major challenge is our negative belief that it is natural to have a poor memory. That is why I want to train several hundred people. The more the merrier but at this time, my next target is 200 people in Hobart and 200 online. That will start to build up a critical mass. Then we can start introducing this work in schools, aged care facilities and workplaces. We are now in discussions to provide memory training to small business owners and their teams with federal funding paying the cost. Let's end digitally induced dementia and strength our ability to visualise the future.   http://www.pozible.com/project/204106

Manfred Spitzer is one of the best-known brain researchers in Germany. His recent book "Digital Dementia" unleashed a heated debate about the adverse effects of Internet use. On ‘Talking Germany’ Manfred Spitzer discusses why too much screen time is dumbing down society; why he doesn’t watch TV and why it’s worth keeping the brain active as we get older. Manfred Spitzer was born in Darmstadt in 1958. He studied medicine, philosophy and psychology in Freiburg, paying his way by performing as a musician. After sojourns in the US and Heidelberg, he was made professor of psychology at the University of Ulm in 1997. A prolific writer, he’s now one of the best-known neuroscientists in Germany. A father of six, he still loves music and plays a range of instruments, including jazz trumpet.
