It would be amiss of us as part of our Winter Spine mop up not have a debrief with one of the winners, right? Step forward Lucy Gossage to fulfil that role. The ex pro triathlete and now (accidental) runner took the win after the toughing it out on the famed 268 mile race up the Pennine Way. We're mighty chuffed to hear her tell her tale of triumph through adversity as she nailed the race of her life at her 2nd attempt at the Spine, after all 2024 is so last year. Lucy picks up her tale of finding running during the covid pandemic, at a time when the world was a strange place and, for her personally, the end of a magnificent career in triathlon was drawing to a close. We're astounded to hear how much she's managed to raise for her charity Move Against Cancer and find out more about some of the magnificent work being undertaken to promote physical activity. Of course the 2025 Spine Race is the headline act and Lucy regales her journey through training, to the start line in Edale and on to a victorious conclusion in Kirk Yetholm. She's candid and open of the role personal heartache and betrayal played, on closing that chapter she's already started an exciting new one that she is evidently buzzing about. It's a terrific insight into the mind and motivation of an elite athlete who is so in touch with her own mindset. A story of transferring strength and resilience built through years of triathlon racing and applying it to a new discipline, just so happens that discipline is ultra marathoning. And aren't we the lucky benefactors of welcoming such prowess to the wonderful running community. Now, go get your lugs around this cracker, it does not disappoint. “It's really important that I get outside, out of the fluorescent lights, out of my uniform, and chase my own dreams and chase my own wants and desires outside of the career that I love so much.”Sarah Barker says that she can't fully explain what it is about Kinder Scout that she loves so much but she thinks it's because it makes her feel a certain way. It feels safe one minute and threatening another and she likes the challenge of both those places. In the first part of this interview you'll listen to Sarah talking about her first wildcamp on Kinder Scout and why she leaves the comfort of her family home to go out alone in nature to spend a night on a local hill or mountain. We recorded this part while hunkered down in the porch of her tent on Grindslow Knoll until we gave in to the howling wind and cold to the warmth of a log fire in my bungalow in Edale village. In the second half of the interview, Sarah shares why she started her YouTube channel which beautifully documents her wildcamping trips, how she learned navigation skills and of course what makes her Wild About Kinder. Sarah's biographySarah is a Midwife, she chose this career path because she has an innate passion and drive for nurturing people. Supporting families through vulnerable life events is at the core of who she is and she gains a great deal of satisfaction from caring for birthing people as they become families. She lives with her Husband, teenage children and 4 dachshunds near the Peak District and has recently been working on renovating her forever home. She has a YouTube channel with over 3000 subscribers and 74 videos published to date. She started filming her camping adventures in 2024 and now believes that her videos have become an important extension to her camps to keep them alive for longer. The unique connections that she has made with ‘the best friends she may never meet' continues to bring her joy and is highly motivating for herself and for others who either wish to explore the outdoors themselves or do so already. This diary of memories will continue to build throughout her exploration of the Peak District predominantly and become a legacy to her family when she is no longer able to do it. Resilient and robust as she is, she faced the situation head on and began picking up the broken pieces one bit at a time as she concurrently recovered from what she had put her body and mind through to reach the finishline of the Spine Race.   As you can expect, bringing the four of us together for a chat, resulted in lots of high energy, fun and laughter, the power of sport and friendship between these three incredible women as they share their personal stories of this epic adventure will certainly put a smile on your face and I have no doubt inspire you to step well outside your comfort zone!  If you enjoy this show and want to find out more insight from Lucy about her Spine Race be sure to pop over to her website www.lucygossage.com If you wish to support Move Against Cancer you can click on Lucy's Just giving page  https://www.justgiving.com/page/lucy-gossage-spine-move and while you are here tuning into the podcast, why not check out the chats I had with Lucy (Ep 26) and Nikki (Ep 8) for the podcast in 2020 and 2019 respectively!

Delighted to chat to the incredible Graeme Brouder who was the last Brit to cross the line in the 2023 Spine Race, 268 miles along the Pennine Way from Edale to Kirk Yetholm, which takes place in the depths of winter every January. What makes Graeme tick? What training did he do and how did he stay mentally strong enough never to give up? Let's find out in this live chat! Originally on YouTube here https://youtube.com/live/LqSEmS_tO-UThis live broadcast / podcast is sponsored by Naak nutrition and I'll be sharing a little taste test with you at the start of the show. Use code WILDGINGERRUNNING for 15% off https://uk.naak.com/Why create last & proud of it?I've reached a stage where I am (in a nice way) non-plussed about elite athletes winning races and setting records. I used to be in awe of these lofty achievements, but I have a lot more in common with and even more awe for the people in the middle of the pack, the back of the pack, and the person who comes LAST OF ALL. So this new series for 2024 celebrates the ‘normal' ultra runners who come last in some of the UK's most famous races and are quite rightly, very proud of their amazing achievement. Just like us, these unsung heroes have busy stressful lives filled with jobs, kids/pets/relatives, mental and/or physical health issues and injuries. Their training and racing has great highs and terrible lows, but they keep on running/jogging/walking/crawling to that finish line. What did it take? What was their training like? How did the race pan out? How did they beat those cut offs against all odds? And what hard-won golden nuggets of advice can they give to us ‘normal' ultra runners about this race in particular, ultra running and life in general. Kinder Scout has a special place in Wayne's psyche. When he was a child, his father would drive regularly along the snake pass. Due to unreliable automotive mechanics they often had to take pit stops along the pass. At the time he was reading passages of Lord of the Rings to Wayne and images of the misty Snake Wood and views of Fairbrook Naze made quite an impression on this estate kid from the North West. Since then, Wayne has had many adventures on Kinder Scout and he's on a mission to represent this beguiling place in his artwork. In this interview, Wayne shares how terrifying tall tales and snatch sightings of Kinder Scout from afar captured his imagination and ignited his curiosity. He shares with us how, in contrast, he feels when he's having a mooch and an amble on Kinder Scout these days; what he learns about the landscape by drawing it and how an appreciation of the practice of historical and contemporary landscape artists informs his thinking, painting and teaching practice. Children play on a soft sandy beach by the Essex Wildlife Trust nature reserve at Stanford-le-Hope. When the tide goes out, this amazing hidden beach is revealed. Water laps. Families bask in the sun. Distant engines of passing marine vessels thrum the air. It's hard to believe that this is reclaimed, re-wilded industrial land. As east as you can go, deep amongst the sedge grass on Wallasea Island the temperature climbs above 30 degrees. Insects busy and buzz on hot rising thermals. Warm wind whirls and whisps. Here, below the footpath, near an inlet brimming with water, a pocket of perfect summer quiet simmers in the heat haze. Low tide on an empty shingle beach near Felixstowe Ferry, with the waves rolling in. The sun is high in the sky, shining almost directly down onto a calm North Sea. Blue sky. Nobody about. Far away on the horizon you see a container ship is about to disappear over the horizon. Time just to stand, and imagine where it might be going, and enjoy the spatial sound of waves advancing and retreating around your feet. In-land now. Rain. Heavy rain. Persistent rain. When a gloriously refreshing soundscape comes to you, and begins to land all about. All about your home, the space around your home, and the streets and gardens nearby. Millions and millions of tiny percussive drops, falling, and landing, from invisible high up clouds. Each drop ends its long downward journey, on top of an upturned plant pot. An old paint tin. A concrete paving stone. A tarpaulin stretched over a little back yard. And there it is. Bliss!  Free moorland wind gusts through the branches of an old, lone oak tree. It stands tall, in the corner of a windswept field, beside a gritstone wall and a metal gate, that chinks, and an ancient footpath. A Peak District tree, with wide reaching bows laden with wind catching leaves. How many storms has this tree survived? How many droughts? How many days of grey? And of bright afternoon sun, like this one, where country walkers pass from time to time. In this episode, host Daniel Neilson speaks to ultra-athlete, Ed Harris. Ed is one of those people who like to run ludicrous distances, pretty quickly. Ahead of the Montane Summer Spine, the fair-weather version of the 268-mile endurance race from Edale in the Peak District to the Scottish Borders. For those unfamiliar, this is regarded as one of the toughest races on earth - you can learn more about it in this official story behind it. Although Ed won't be on the line on June 18th, he previously competed in the inaugural Summer edition in 2021, finishing 4th place by running a total of 94 hours and 33 minutes.  Daniel and Ed discuss how to keep going when things seem very far away, how his training has shifted to focus on his wellbeing, and why the scenery of the Spine race is one of the biggest motivations.

This is my story. I decided to tell it, to get it out before I chat with others about their race so I don't try to steal their limelight. Hopefully some useful advice for mid pack / back of the pack people looking to take on a challenge of the magnitude of the Spine.  The Spine Race is the whole of the Pennine Way from Edale in Derbyshire to Kirk Yetholm in Scotland, a total of 268 miles. All through the hills and mountains and in the middle of winter with only just over 8hrs of daylight from every 24hrs. It's tough, it's #britainsmostbrutal

Starting in Edale the race follows the Pennine Way through the Peak District, Yorkshire Dales, and into the Northumberland National Park over the Cheviots, finishing in Kirk Yetholm on the Scottish Border. To start, we hear from Montane athlete Debbie Martin-Consani, who came first in the women's field, moments after she crossed the finish line. Host, Daniel Nielson chats with Montane ambassador and running coach Howard Dracup, who this year took part in the Spine Challenger North Race and took an impressive third overall. Howard tells us about the nitty-gritty of the race and how he tackled his training.  And finally, we caught up with Eoin Keith, the overall winner, at the finish line.

Go behind the scenes to hear about the working life of retired Peak District National Park ranger Gordon Miller, who was the Area Ranger in Edale for over 30 years. Listen to this interview to find out what inspired him to dedicate his working life to the Park and ranger services, how he's seen Kinder Scout change over time, and why he decided to live in Edale. At the end he describes what makes him wild about Kinder Scout. While listening, you can experience atmospheric background sounds recorded from the area - headphones will be best for this. *Gordon Miller is a retired Peak District National Park ranger, who was brought up in Stockport and first visited Kinder Scout on a camping trip in 1953. Brought up in urban Stockport, he decided in 1953 on a camping trip at the age of 12 that he wanted to work in the newly-formed Peak District National Park, and tagged along with wardens (as they were then called) until he could officially become a volunteer at 18. He became a full-time warden in 1969, and when the job-title changed to ranger in the 1970s he began to develop professionalism and begin international co-operation. Gordon pioneered many ranger training courses, working with experts at Losehill Hall, the Peak District National Park's learning and conference centre, to develop professionalism in nature protection. He is a former chairman of the Association of Countryside Rangers and instigated exchange visits and seminars to help rangers in Europe to learn from each other. He went on to be a founder and president of The International Ranger Federation, founded on 31 July 1992 in the UK, which represents rangers in 50 countries. In 2009 he received the highest accolade awarded by the European Federation of National Parks for his outstanding role in strengthening ranger services worldwide. Gordon retired as a full-time Peak District ranger in 2002, after 33 years mostly responsible for the Kinder area around Edale in the heart of the national park, where he made his home in the 1960s. *Biography details have been taken from sections of an https://www.peakdistrict.gov.uk/learning-about/news/archive/2009/news/peak-district-ranger-receives-highest-european-accolade (archived press release) on the Peak District National Park website. The Poet Laureate Has Gone to His Shed

Sabrina Verjee works as a vet in The Lake District., but she is also a champion fell runner. She has recently has broken the Wainwrights record, successfully completing all of Cumbria's 214 peaks, a 325 mile route in 5 days 23 hours 49 minutes. The feat involves 36,000m of ascent - equivalent to climbing Everest four times and includes includes Scafell Pike, England's highest peak. In summer 2010 Simon Armitage decided to walk the Pennine Way. The challenging 256-mile route is usually approached from south to north, from Edale in the Peak District to Kirk Yetholm, the other side of the Scottish border. He resolved to tackle it the other way round. Crossing the beautiful and bleak terrain, across lonely fells and into the howling wind, he was described at the time as the Eeyore of the walking world. Sabrina holds the record for the fastest female completion of the Pennine Way, so there's plenty of stories to share and anecdotes to tell. Produced by Susan Roberts

The Curious Climber Podcast: Chatting with Hazel and Mina

This episode is a conversation with Katy Whittaker aka The Grit Kid. Katy is a life long climber. She started young in a family of climbers and outdoor enthusiasts living in the picturesque village of Edale in the Peak District, UK. Katy became known on the UK scene for a number of things; her stand out achievements on hard, scary gritstone trad routes make an impressive CV alone but she has also bouldered hard outside, competed for the British team and excelled in sport climbing. But what makes this conversation interesting isn't her list of achievements. It's Katy's honesty, reflection and her insights into her climbing that are the gold. We talk about risk, motivation to try dangerous routes, her relationship with “hard climbing” and her identity as someone who since so young has been entrenched in climbing culture.

Episode 92 is an interview and discussion with Damian Hall. Damian Hall recently entered the ultra running record books by breaking the Fastest Known Time (FKT) for the 268-mile (431.48kms) Pennine Way. Now ratified as 61hrs 35mins Damian’s time bettered that of American ultra runner John Kelly, who just a week earlier had run it in 64hrs 46mins. Prior to that the record had stood unbeaten for 31 years, belonging to Mike Hartley, who ran 65hrs 20mins in 1989. The Pennine Way is Great Britain’s oldest – and arguably toughest – National Trail, twisting its way from Kirk Yetholm in the Scottish Borders to Edale, Derbyshire, and including a section along Hadrian’s Wall. Much of it is over remote, boggy hills, with a total ascent that exceeds the height of Mount Everest. Popular with hikers, who usually complete it in 16-19 days, Damian did it in just two-and-a-half, battling sleep exhaustion and all manner of tough weather conditions along the way. When he’s not running, Damian is a coach and a journalist and author with more than 20 years' experience of writing for and editing magazines, newspapers, books and websites. So, instead of having an epic 5 hour long podcast we focussed on two things, the Montane Spine Race and Marcothon. Two topics Debbie is more than qualified to chat about!! Debbie's only race of 2020, yes she raced in 2020, was the small matter of 268 miles long. The Montane Spine Race starts in Edale in Derbyshire and finishes in Kirk Yetholm in the bonnie Scottish Borders following the Penine Way National Trail. It's run in deepest darkest January, so daylight is at a premium and the 2020 edition had a guest appearance from Storm Brendan. Listen to the tale of Debbie's race, it's truly inspirational. The second part of the show focuses on Marcothon!! The much-loved challenge of running either 3 miles or 25 minutes (whichever comes first) every day for the month of December. Debbie is the founder of this amazing movement. Hear from the source about how Marcothon came about, how it grew (and grew and grew) and how it pretty much fills a month of Debbie's time every year! In this special midweek episode, we chat to one of those runners,  John Kelly, for the 2nd time this year.  What earns him his exalted status as the only person ever to appear on this show twice in the same year?  Breaking the Pennine Way FKT, that's what.  A record which had stood for 31 years before he came along. John covered the 268 mile long Pennine Way, the national trail running from Edale in the Peak District to Kirk Yetholm across the border in Scotland, in just 2 days, 16 hours and 40 minutes, beating the previous record by a margin of just over 30 minutes. We chat through John's data-driven approach to his epic challenges and talk about how this latest achievement fits into his plan to run the Hartley Slam in 2020. On a wet and windy summer's day Jarvis Cocker takes you to the remote village of Edale and Kinder a landscape he has fallen in love with. He first came across the Peak District while he was a pupil in his native Sheffield and came out on a school trip which he says no–one wanted to go on. However, after two days of exploring he says something happened – something clicked in his head and he didn’t want to admit it but he started to enjoy the landscape. Over the last 40 years it’s a region he has regularly visited and explored and is now truly hooked. To introduce more people to this landscape especially people from the cities, Jarvis along with artist Jeremy Deller and the National Trust who own Kinder Scout has created a trail ‘Be Kinder’. The trail winds its way along a route stretching almost two miles from the tiny railway station in Edale to the foot of the plateau of Kinder Scout to mark the 1932 mass trespass on Kinder Scout. This mass trespass was all about allowing working class people access to the countryside something Jarvis wants to rekindle as he wants everyone to discover the magic and beauty he has found in this landscape. The presenter is Jarvis Cocker and the producer is Perminder Khatkar. Contributors: Jeremy Deller, actress Maxine Peake, Gordon Miller and MEP Magid Magid.

In this episode, David speaks to award-winning folk musician Bella Hardy. A fiddle-singer and songwriter from Edale in the Peak District, she has performed at festivals worldwide and on the UK folk circuit since she was 13. In 2007, she released her debut solo album Night Visiting, for which she was nominated for the Horizon award at the BBC Folk Awards. She has since won at the Folk Awards for original song, for ‘The Herring Girl’ in 2012, and was named BBC Folk Singer of the year in 2014 – but most importantly, earlier this year, she composed the theme tune for this very podcast! David and Bella discuss how folk music has been redefined over the years, deviating from its once rural beginnings, and Bella reflects on her musical influences and inspirations from nature – from hiding in dens with fox cubs, to using “the joy of folk music” as merely a hyper-convoluted way to become branded as “Patron of the Bog”! Almost 80 years since the Mass Trespass on Kinder Scout, Clare Balding joins ramblers from Manchester and Sheffield to mark this inspirational moment in walking history. On April 24th 1932, around 400 ramblers from Lancashire set off from Bowden Bridge quarry near Hayfield to walk up onto the plateau of Kinder Scout, the highest point in the Derbyshire Peak District, in protest at the lack of the right to roam on open land. As they scrambled upwards towards the moorland plateau of Kinder, the trespassers were met and confronted by the Duke of Devonshire's gamekeepers. A group of ramblers from Sheffield, who had also set off that morning from Edale, did eventually reach the plateau and the two groups met up before turning and retracing their steps. The following day six of the Manchester ramblers were arrested and imprisoned, a move which was to outrage many people and serve only to highlight and sympathise with the ramblers cause, resulting finally in the Countryside and Rights of Way Act in 2000 Today Clare joins members of the Sheffield Ramblers, as well as Manchester-born broadcaster and avid walker, Mike Harding. They represent the two groups of ramblers that set off from Edale and Hayfield respectively, to take part in the Mass Trespass back in 1932. Leaving from Bowden Bridge, just as the original trespassers did, the group walk towards Kinder Reservoir and on to William Clough, where the Duke of Devonshire's gamekeepers were waiting. As they walk, the old cross-Pennines rivalry is still in evidence as the Sheffield walkers remind Clare that it was their group that had actually reached the top all those years ago. But everyone on that day 80 years ago shared a common passion for the hills and the moors around which, as folk singer Ewan Maccoll wrote, no one man should have the right to own. The Mass Trespass of Kinder Scout was one of the most inspirational moments in the history of the rambling movement, inspiring walkers and campaigners of access to open land for years to come. It wasn't the only trespass to take place - there were others before it and many more inspired by it. But it lives on in the memory of all those who believe that all should have the right to roam. The crew were seen to fire flares to illuminate the ground beneath to hopefully see a feature they could recognise, this proved fruitless as the aircraft flew up the Vale of Edale striking Broadlee Bank Tor just below the summit. Jim Watson's Uncle Jim Barker was one of the crewmen lost that night and in 2002 Jim set out to find the site where his Uncle had lost his life. He was aided by Douglas Rowland who had witnessed the crash as a young boy in 1937 and could clearly remember the spot which he had clambered up to the next day. Douglas was able to present Jim with a brass plaque which he had rescued from the Heyford all those years ago. Jules Hudson joins Jim and Douglas as they retrace the journey they took to the crash site. Nor is the Heyford the only plane which lost its way in these treacherous peaks. Pat Collins has written about the many hundreds of wartime crashes and the invaluable lessons they have taught airline pilots who have come after them. He and National Park Ranger John Owen take Jules to one of the largest sites, the Super Fortress on Bleaklow.
