In this episode I dive deep into the often misunderstood and stigmatized world of women's sexual health and a condition called congenital neuroproliferative vestibulodynia. Joining us is Erin Young, a brave voice who has navigated the murky waters of seeking treatment for her condition in a society where discussing female sexuality is still taboo.Together, we'll explore the significant challenges that many face in getting proper diagnoses and care, ranging from societal perceptions to the medical community's lack of comprehensive training in female sexual health. Erin is a fierce advocate and even though at times she questioned her self, she always knew deep down she wasn't getting the right care and kept searching and researching for someone that could help her. This week my guest Erin Young and I peel back the curtain on the publishing world's highs and lows, sharing the tenacity required to navigate rejection and the emotional fortitude to absorb critiques even after topping the charts. From embracing a tough exterior to the strategic shifts like adopting a pen name for different genres, we explore the nuanced decisions that shape an author's career, especially when crossing from the world of historical fiction to contemporary thrillers. Erin Young is the author of the Riley Fisher series and lives and writes in Brighton, UK. Her debut contemporary  thriller novel, The Fields, was  inspired by an article in 'The Guardian'  about the menacing power of Big Agriculture on rural communities in Iowa and drew comparisons with Mare of Easttown and True Detective.  Her second novel,  Original Sins has been described as 'Bold, gritty and deeply immersive.' However, Erin Young is no stranger to the publishing world. Erin Young is the pseudonym of acclaimed historical novelist, Robyn Young, author of eight internationally bestselling novels. She has been published in 20 languages in 23 countries, selling over two million books worldwide.Original SinsIt's a brutal winter in Des Moines, Iowa, and the city is gripped by fear. A serial attacker known as the Sin Eater is stalking women and has just struck again. It's a tough time and a tough place for Riley Fisher, a former small-town sergeant, to be reporting for duty as an FBI agent on her first assignment.Teamed with a man she's not sure she can trust and struggling to prove herself - while fighting the pull of her old life and family dramas - Riley is tasked with investigating a vicious death threat against the newly elected female state governor. Gradually, she traces a disturbing connection between this case and the hunt for the Sin Eater. Through snow, ice, violence and lies, Riley Fisher is drawn towards a terrifying revelation.Patreon - Support The Showpatreon.com/theconversationwithnadinemathesonpodcastThank you for joining me. Routes into STEM – Could apprenticeships solve the tech talent crunch? There's an acute shortage of candidates for tech jobs – in fact, research suggests tens of millions of potential roles are going unfilled. In a poll with global technology chiefs conducted by MIT's ‘Technology Review', a majority found that they weren't getting enough candidates for roles, and those who did apply lacked necessary skills. Clearly, there's a problem here. So what can tech companies do to bring more talent through the door? Could building a baseline of investment in new, or even unqualified, talent be a solution?Maninder Randhawa believes so. He's the Early Careers Leader for Hewlett Packard Enterprise in the UKIMEA region, and spends his time building programmes to upskill the organizations new talent. He believes that, whilst there's absolutely a place for old hands, the fresh ideas and ability to adapt and mould that new talent brings makes them more than worth the investment.A case in point is Stu Franks of Alces flight, an HPC services provider. He began at the firm at age 18 as a school leaver, and now heads a team building and marketing services and solutions. He believes apprenticeships, like his own, offer a route to great talent that's not suited to academia but has all the practical talent and intelligence needed to excel in the field, and values demonstrable skills, personality and attitude above degrees and certificates. In order to attract young people into the STEM fields, though, they need to know about it. That's where outreach groups like Stemettes come in. They are a UK-based organization dedicated to reaching out to underrepresented groups in schools across the country, with programs to engage young people in STEM careers as an option, and provide mentoring and support for them to take their first steps. Floriane Fidegnon got into tech through the work of the group and now sits on the board, something her employer encourages as it creates a virtuous cycle of bringing in new talent, and encouraging existing talent like Floriane to become engaged ambassadors for the field. But what about the kind of soft skills that come with a degree – just not one in STEM topics? Erin Young is a case in point. She's a lead researcher for the Alan Turing Institute, which is dedicated to solving societal problems with technology. She came into the field from a background in classics, where her skills in research, reasoning and analytics, combined with a love of data analytics, made a move into tech a great – if seemingly disconnected – jump. Sources cited in this episode:85 million unfilled tech roles by 2030: https://www.kornferry.com/insights/this-week-in-leadership/talent-crunch-future-of-workMIT Technology Review poll with tech leaders on talent shortages: https://www.technologyreview.com/2023/09/21/1079695/new-approaches-to-the-tech-talent-shortage/STEM apprenticeships in the UK increased by over a quarter in the last decade: https://explore-education-statistics.service.gov.uk/find-statistics/apprenticeships-and-traineeshipsThe National Science Foundation report on the STEM workforce between 2011 and 2021: https://ncses.nsf.gov/pubs/nsf23315/report/the-stem-workforce#:~:text=The%20size%20of%20the%20STEM,2011%20to%2024%25%20in%202021UK government report into diversity and inclusion in STEM: https://committees.parliament.uk/publications/34531/documents/190060/default/

Bad AI is becoming a major headache for organizations. Tech is a male-dominated sphere, which means that it produces, inherently, male-skewed AI driven by unconsciously biased datasets. The effects of this can be measurable. Run through the same AI, women can receive worse credit or loan agreements than their male counterparts, be pushed out from job openings, receive worse medical treatment, or even receive performance penalties for doing the same work as men to the same standard. So how has this situation emerged and, more importantly, what can be done about it?

As a certified Human Potential Coach and Sociocracy trainer, she shares insight into how she brings nature-informed frameworks and a holistic toolkit to help individuals and forward-thinking organisations balance nervous systems to establish safety and avoid distraction and dysfunction to make real traction in creating a positive impact. She speaks to living an enchanted life and ecological patterns brought into social settings to encourage a diversity of perspectives and governance hierarchies to make decisions with a "power with, rather than power over". We discuss her garden and what is growing, her favourite plant, Lemon Grass (Cymbopogon citratus) and its many functions and her healthy journey using Ayurvedic practices, intuitively going to certain plants when she needs them, and the underestimated balm of a cup of herbal tea.  Erin holds a Bachelor of Environmental Engineering and discusses how her first Permaculture Design Course in Portugal unlocked her understanding of how life works and led her on this path, whereby she now teaches Social Permaculture weekend courses alongside pioneer Robin Clayfield (who will be joining us in an interview soon!), speaks at Festivals and teaches elements of her toolkit at courses such as the Change-makers PDC on the Sunshine Coast.  Currently, she is partnered with Earth Funerals, an organisation establishing sustainable funerals and natural burial grounds around Australia. With developmental coaching, consulting and training in collaborative decision-making and governance (aka sociocracy), social permaculture, and artfully facilitating group processes, she is modelling how groups can be healthy human ecosystems and a regenerative force beyond monoculture thinking! Last week, I worked with Erin Young to uncover an authentic way to convey her marketing message without creating confusion or compromising authentic connection.  And, we referenced the work of Marisa Corcoran quite a bit during our conversation.  In particular Marisa's super smart approach to storytelling in your copy.  She calls it The Story Strip Down and it's a method I rely on quite a bit.  So, this week, I figured we should re-air one of our early episodes back when this show was still called The Six Figure Coach Podcast because The Story Strip Down is just so darn good.   In fact,  Marisa Corcoran who just might be the most clever person I know.  Not only is she a talented copywriter and teacher, she also models what it looks like to run a values driven business.  In this episode, Marisa coaches me through her Story Strip Down process to help me be less of a stiff professor in my copy and more… well… me.  If you want to discover what to say and how to say it so you can  magnetically attract your dream clients, you need Marisa Corcoran in your corner... Today's episode will help you leverage two important marketing skills.  Narrating + Story telling. That's what my guest, Erin Young discovered when we dove into her Signature System to uncover the simplest and most compelling way to convey her message in her marketing. Now I know that narrating and story telling sound like they're the same thing, but they're different in this context.  Narrating occurs when you explain exactly what you're doing while it's happening.  Storytelling helps your audience understand your work more deeply because they're able to see themselves in the stories you tell.  If you ever feel like nobody quite understands what exactly you do. Or maybe you lean too hard into being a professor instead of storytelling…  Perhaps you just want to be able to layer more creativity and connection into your marketing… either way… you're going to love the conversation I had with Erin.   Erin Young helps natural health practitioners share their craft authentically, moving beyond the grind with purpose, stability, calm and connection. But Erin's niche is evolving and her Signature System felt confusing.  But when we let go of the idea that her target audience needs to fit a certain occupation, Erin discovered that Sometimes the best way to define our ideal client is defining the moment of time they are in. I'll confess that I came into the conversation feeling a little nervous because inside The Hive Erin and I have struggled a bit to pin down her signature system.  But everything clicked in this episode and I cannot wait for you to hear the breakthroughs we both had.  I also want to shout out my friend Marisa Corcoran who inspired a tool Erin and I played around with. It's called the Story Strip Down and Marisa actually taught it on this very show. It's episode 25 and we've linked to it in the show notes.  Okay.I'm ready to do this. Let's dive in. n electrifying new thriller from Erin Young. It starts with a body - a young woman found dead in an Iowa cornfield, on one of the few family farms still managing to compete with the giants of Big Agriculture. For Sergeant Riley Fisher, newly promoted to head of investigations at the Black Hawk County Sheriff's Office, an already horrific crime takes on a personal edge when she discovers the victim is an old friend, from a dark past she thought she'd left behind. Rumour travels fast in small towns, while sweltering heat and state-wide elections only add to the pressure-cooker atmosphere. When another body is found, Riley is in danger of being engulfed by the fear and the frenzy. Something deeply disturbing is out there - and it reaches far beyond Black Hawk County. Beautifully written and masterfully crafted, The Fields is a stunning crime debut.

The Fields by Erin Young (comes out Jan 25th, 2022) is a breakneck police procedural set in the Iowa Corn Belt and centers around a murder of a woman found in a cornfield, one whose implications extend far beyond the Midwest. But perhaps the most surprising twist of this story is off the page. Erin Young, the author isn't an Iowan or a tried and true Midwesterner, as one would expect, but rather an accomplished British historical novelist from Brighton, who under another pen name is a perennial Sunday Times bestselling author. She's been published in 9 languages and 22 countries, selling two million books worldwide. Today, I continue my conversation with another Hive member who is truly on a mission. And her name is Erin Young. She helps natural health practitioners share their craft authentically; moving beyond the grind with purpose, stability, calm & connection. Erin believes that as humans, we are part of ecology. And by reconnecting fully with that ecology, we can have a broader impact and more meaning in our lives. Erin and I talk about what mission actually means and how as a coach on a mission, values play a massive role in the work we do. I don't think I've ever interviewed a more intentional, inquisitive, or thought-filled person on this show and I know you'll get so much value from Erin's perspective and intentionality. I actually walked away from our interview thinking, “I want to have conversations like this every day.” So, without further ado, here's Erin Young. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. Today, joining me is none other than Erin Young, the founder, and principal consultant for SlideUX. This family-run consultancy provides practical and measurable approaches to business rather than quick and fancy hacks to unlock a magical way to get rich and earn money. Erin is a user experience architect who shares the same passion as I do to simplify processes, especially in a business setting. Erin and I began our talk on how many businesses nowadays tend to offer a lot of services. Although it may generally sound like a good idea, this paves the way for confusion because most business owners may lose their way and even stunt or stop the growth of their business because they have too much on their plate. Many businesses tend to follow what's popular instead of providing value. When they are asked, they can't answer their ROI or if that service is helping the company. While most new businesses may struggle to simplify their process, they shouldn't hesitate to cut down their list early on because it might be the only thing stopping them from being successful. However, new business owners should ensure that whatever they are "niche-ing" into is a real need and not just a quick-rich scheme. The devil is in the details when you have a business. While seeing the overview of your business can help you feel inspired to work, business owners need to look a little closer to know precisely what's going on in their business and what's being worked on. Sometimes, we even need to get involved and throw ourselves in, especially when dealing with a difficult client or a new task.Key Learning Points: Erin shares how they used to offer many services to clients initially but had to get rid of them because it would take time for the client to get back to them. - 3:35 Mads says that having many services to offer may sound good, but it isn't generally a nice thing to do. - 5:18  Erin shares how cathartic she felt when her company simplified their list of services; she adds that they could cut down on 75% that cluttered their list. - 05: 55 Erin says that you don't need to sell it if you don't have a standard for your service. - 7:00 Erin shares how she wishes she could go back in time to simplify her business sooner. - 10:21 Mads says that if you have an easy-to-replicate and standardize process, you should focus on that. - 11:21 Erin says that she uses the standards in her company as somewhat of an entry pass, especially for clients who want a longer-lasting relationship. - 14:21 Mads says that the devil is in the details when it comes to business.- 16:21 Erin says that she sometimes gets involved with her staff to retrain them rather than seek a new client.- 17:09 Mads says that if you have particular case studies, gaining new clients - even in the most "niched" areas becomes so much easier- 18:38 Connect with Erin:WebsiteFacebook YouTubeTwitter

They help clients establish great user experiences, utilizing the best UX design practices that include integrated business strategy, user research, UI design, and cross-functional collaboration. They've been named one of the best UX agencies five years in a row.  Takeaways The real value of UX research is understood through opportunity cost. Try asking “What would it cost if you got on the wrong foot with wrong assumptions?” User Research might help you choose the right options from the get-go. Competitive research can provide deep insights but it's not user research. Now that the companies are recognizing that digital is imperative and carries more weight than ever before, it has changed the way they are distributing their budget. "Every company reaches that point where they have to delegate, or they have to divide decision-making to make all of the decisions they have to make" - Erin To facilitate the free flow of communication and humanize remote culture, organize weekly meetings as a senior leadership team, prepare an agenda ahead of time with space for comments, and most importantly take notes.  Links: LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/erinlynnyoung/ Slide UX - https://slideux.com/ Twitter - https://twitter.com/slideux?lang=en Busted Myths:  You can save time by skipping user research.

Erin Young earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Notre Dame and works as a flight controls engineer at Boom – Supersonic. [1:10] What are careers available for Aerospace Engineering? – 2 paths space or aviation. – Erin went the Aviation route while at first thinking she was going the space route after going to space camp at the age of 13. [3:15] What do you actually focus on during college? – focus on aerodynamics of flight – similar to mechanical engineering, a lot of fluid dynamics. [4:20] Specific systems for supersonic (faster than speed of sound) aircraft vs standard commercial aircraft. The aircraft at supersonic speeds; everything heats up – they have to work to cool everything down. They have to fly through shock waves at a continual basis. When you break through the sound barrier, it is a continuous shock wave. [7:30] Are there enough careers for a very specific STEM degree like Aeropace? – since it is very close to mechanical you can flow back to mechanical but would be very tough to go from mechanical to Aerospace. [9:10] Fired up about the future of supersonic speed – today we still travel at the same speeds we did back in the 1950’s! The concord (first supersonic jet) was very expensive to fly – the Boom solution will be very fuel efficient. [11:40] Ah-ha moment – interesting that up to graduation it is a very clear path, but after that the roadmap is very wide open – the ah-ha moment was when she realized the number of paths she could pursue [13:10] Getting through college: have a good support network – her first calculus test was a 53, and she failed it. The support network was so very important to get through that – she felt like she was not cut out for engineering after that test. [16:20] Best advice – focus on the fundamentals. Habit – always ask questions and use Onenote (or Evernote) to write everything down. Book Erin recommends Fly Girls by Keith O’Brien. [17:30] parting advice – get hands on experience!
