After this she undertook postgraduate teaching qualifications to work in both the primary and secondary sectors. Have worked in Catholic education in Melbourne for 25 years in a variety of roles and educational settings. These include classroom teaching, specialist teaching, curriculum leader and Catholic placed teacher in extension education at Zoos Victoria. Also extended post-graduate learning with a Master of Education, Graduate Certificates in Assessment and STEM Education and additional qualifications in business management, leadership and risk management. Within Melbourne Archdiocese Catholic Schools, major responsibilities have been supporting schools and working with teachers to devise and develop resources and professional learning opportunities that enhance science learning across the curriculum. In collaboration with our teachers, cultural organisations and expert providers, we develop learning opportunities and partnerships that improve teachers' core content knowledge in science, whilst developing pedagogical models that improve understanding by enabling the application of scientific conceptual knowledge in the context of multidisciplinary projects. Acted as Primary Investigator for MACS in a 4-year ARC Linkage Research Project (with Monash Uni, BCE, and UQ) researching problem-based learning through STEM education. Using problems as the drivers for student engagement and motivation with the curriculum and exploring teachers' attitudes, beliefs and pedagogical practices as they participated as co-researchers. In 2018 initiated STEM MAD, which has become a flagship program in Melbourne and a national program in dioceses across Australia, and continues to demonstrate scientific learning, where students use STEM projects to Make a Difference (MAD) to others and the environment. Focusing on digital innovation and career readiness, goIT engages students from diverse backgrounds with Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) subjects and computer science, design thinking and digital innovation. The program offers an industry-developed, customisable curriculum that teaches students the 21st-century skills necessary for a career in technology. Lessons cover topics including design thinking, prototyping, artificial intelligence, machine learning and more.Since the launch of the goIT Monthly Challenge in 2020, thousands of students across the globe have used key principles from goIT to design tech-based solutions and submit pitch videos based on a Monthly Challenge theme. Each month, TCS co-hosts the event with a Sustainable Development Goal ambassador. Today we hang out with Food Ladder's founding CEO Kelly McJannett to learn how Food Ladder is addressing food security in remote and Indigenous communities. Alex was determined to use business to create social change. As a social change specialist, Kelly saw kids struggling to concentrate in class because they were hungry and understood the macro impact of food security. By joining forces, they found a way to combine agricultural technology and teaching systems to create lasting social change. From the first greenhouse installation, both realised this was a powerful way to reframe food choices for the next generation. About Kelly McJannett Kelly McJannett is founding CEO of award-winning non-profit Food Ladder which addresses food security in remote and Indigenous communities as well as education, health and economic participation with a holistic focus on wellbeing. An experienced leader in multidisciplinary approaches to social change, Kelly has pioneered scalable place-based agritech solutions which address immediate human needs, support environmental outcomes and ready vulnerable communities for worsening conditions resulting from climate change.   Kelly holds a Bachelor of Communications (UTS) and an MBA (The University of Sydney Business School) where she was awarded Social Justice and Community Leadership Scholarship. Today we hang out with Food Ladder's founding CEO Kelly McJannett to learn how Food Ladder is addressing food security in remote and Indigenous communities. Alex was determined to use business to create social change. West Australian high school payloads to space! Find out about the BinarX Outreach Program which connects West Australian high school students with the Binar Space Program at Curtin University. We catch up with Outreach Program Coordinator Meg Berry and Ahla & Shivani from Bob Hawke College to learn more about the Binar 2-3-4 in early August! Hosted by Ben Newsome from Fizzics Education About the BinarX Outreach Program The BinarX program sees West Australian students design and prototype science payloads for the Binar cubesat, and then build those projects for launch on-orbit with the Binar Space Program at Curtin University. Payload concepts are directed by students and teachers & may include sensors to study earth and space environment, samples for testing in microgravity, or samples for testing in a vacuum. They may also include a software-only payload running on Binar's flight computer. Students will access their results using amateur band radio, either at Curtin or through other ground stations participating in the open source SatNOGS network. As part of the program, students and teachers will also construct and operate their own SatNOGS ground station to gain a better understanding of radio communications and contribute back to the SatNOGS community. As the program progresses, BinarX will guide teachers and students through obtaining radio licenses and installing amateur radio equipment in their schools. This will allow them to communicate with their satellite payload directly, and connect with the rest of the global amateur satellite community.The program is currently at capacity for the 2024-2026 Student Payload Development Program, but please register your interest for future opportunities with the program! This project was funded for 1.9 million dollars by the Australian Maths and Science Partnership Program (Federal Government). Dr Coupland was co-leader with Associate Professor Anne Prescott at UTS. The collaborative project with CSIRO and AAMT produced curriculum materials highlighting the role of mathematics in science. The materials, videos of scientists with related classroom activities, are freely available and used in many Australian schools. Science Extension enables students to pursue their passion for science. The NSW HSC subject requires students to engage with complex concepts and theories and to critically evaluate new ideas, discoveries and contemporary scientific research. We speak with Dr Lisa Cabral from the University of Technology Sydney to learn the opportunities for both students and mentors. Hosted by Ben Newsome from Fizzics Education About UTS Mentor Science+ Science Extension HSC Students are challenged to examine a scientific research question influenced by the study of one or more of the scientific disciplines. Uniquely for this HSC subject, students will produce a detailed scientific research report that reflects the standards generally required for publication in a scientific journal. Science Extension lays a foundation for students to pursue further study in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) based courses offered at the tertiary level, and to engage in new and emerging industries. UTS works with schools to place students together with mentors to do real scientific research. Learn more About Dr Lisa Cabral Lisa completed her undergraduate degree Bachelor of Science in 1989 at The Flinders University of SA, completed her PhD in 2003 at UNSW and completed her Graduate Diploma of Education in 2014. Lisa is an experienced researcher/educator, with 12 years teaching undergraduate, honours and PhD students in the School of Medicine at the University of New South Wales, 9 years teaching with CSIRO's Scientists in Schools partnership, 4 years as a Medical Ethics tutor to First- and Second-Year Medicine students and 9 years experience teaching Science to secondary school students. Dr. Colleen Kelley from the University of Arizona has created an amazing set of comic books designed to help students of many ages understand chemistry and become molecular literate. Hosted by Ben Newsome from Fizzics Education About Dr. Colleen Kelley Dr. Colleen Kelley is the Creator and Founder of Kids' Chemical Solutions which is a comic-book-based curriculum for kids ages 8 – 108. We speak with Professor Kirsten Benkendorff from Southern Cross University to learn her thoughts as well as discover the work she does to protect our marine ecosystems. Hosted by Ben Newsome from Fizzics Education About Professor Kirsten Benkendorff There's evidence that people can be happier and healthier if they regularly eat seafood. However, we can't produce healthy seafood if we don't look after our estuaries and oceans. Kirsten is a Professor of Marine Science and loves inspiring students with my passion for marine biodiversity. She mentors students in evidence-based research and leads multi-disciplinary teams investigating the value and vulnerability of marine resources. Her research focuses on the nutritional and medicinal properties of marine species and how these are impacted by a range of environmental stressors, including climate change and pollution. To date, her research teams have produced over 150 scientific papers. Kirsten works with the fisheries and aquaculture industry, government agencies, traditional owners and community groups to find solutions to environmental problems. Her contributions to science have been recognised in several awards including Young Australian of the Year for Science and Technologyand the Australian Academy of Science Dorothy Hill Award for marine and earth science. She is hoping her ongoing research will influence policies on water quality management and pesticide regulation, in order to keep our seafood safe and healthy.She is keen to collaborate and connect with the community to share her knowledge. Hosted by Ben Newsome from Fizzics Education About Dr Anurika De Silva Anurika is an early career biostatistician working towards the advancement of Public Health at the Methods and Implementation Support for Clinical and Health (MISCH) research Hub, University of Melbourne. Having obtained a BSc in Industrial Statistics from the University of Colombo (Sri Lanka) and a PhD in Biostatistics from the University of Melbourne, Anurika now enjoys using maths and stats to help doctors find best treatments for patients. She currently leads a research program focused on developing novel and robust statistical methods for clinical research.  Anurika has fostered and led strong clinical and statistical collaborations in multidisciplinary teams from national and international institutes and she frequently delivers seminars and workshops on statistical methods to health practitioners. Enthusiastic about teaching and much loved by her students, Anurika supervises PhD and Master students and is also the coordinator for the Master of Public Health subject on Biostatistics at the University of Melbourne with >300 students. Robert Hollow has been involved in astronomy education outreach for many years. We discuss his thought on how to teach radioastronomy as well as the work he is involved with in the PULSE@Parkes project and more! He develops educational programs and materials to support students, teachers and the public in their understanding of astronomy. Part of his role is to write online educational resources in astronomy and in particular the radio astronomy and other work carried out by CASS. He runs professional development for teachers, gives presentations to teacher groups and schools and coordinates a speaker program of CASS researchers for schools and community groups. Join Superstar of STEM Sally Hurst as we discuss how she teaches paleobiology at the Australian Museum and describes her passion for helping rural girls to get involved in STEM. Hosted by Ben Newsome from Fizzics Education About Sally Hurst Growing up on a farm where the closest city was over an hour away made the road to STEM careers and becoming a palaeontologist a little difficult. So, after finding her passion for the past through her work experience at the National Dinosaur Museum in Canberra, Sally moved to Sydney to find a university where she could indeed study dinosaurs. Sally completed her Bachelors at Macquarie University in Palaeobiology, and Ancient Egyptian Archaeology, and is now completing her Masters of Research in Science. While learning about the past has been a highlight, Sally's favourite job is being able to get others just as excited about science and palaeontology, this encouraged through her role as a science communicator at the Australian Museum, and as a mentor for young rural girls through various scholarship and coaching programs.
