In 2021, the town of Nový Bor became the main organizer of the International Glass Symposium (IGS), and once again this small glassmaking town in the north of Bohemia will turn into a true world glassmaking metropolis for a few days. Each of the previous symposia was unique, and this year's jubilee will be no different. Place and material are the unchanging basis of the tradition, but glassmaking and art are a living, leading and original phenomenon reflecting the times.  This year's IGS will take place on a much larger scale than previous years. The number of organizers and participants increased, and IGS strengthened its global prestige. Despite all the changes that glassmaking has gone through and that have also affected IGS, Nový Bor region remains an exceptional area with its range of glass processing technologies, from machine production, off-hand blown glass at glassworks to an extremely wide range of refining techniques.  The beginning of the IGS dates back to 1982 when Crystalex in Nový Bor managed something almost impossible. The idea of an international meeting of glassmakers in totalitarian Czechoslovakia became reality. Crystalex invited artists and designers from all over the world to its workshops. Nearly 50 artists from 13 countries came to realize their artistic ideas with the help of the local glassmakers. More than 300 exhibits were created.  Thirty-nine years later, the program structure and the basic idea of the symposium still follow the tradition founded by Crystalex. Many artists also return to Nový Bor regularly. However, the symposium has changed with the time as well. The visit of artists from the “West” is no longer considered exotic and thanks to IGS it's possible to show the world that Czech glassmakers have not lost any of their famous craftsmanship.  IGS has become one of the most important international events in the art glass field and during its existence it has hosted about 600 artists from all over the world. To make the symposium attractive for the public, not only glass artists are invited to participate, but designers, painters, sculptors, architects, personalities from among fashion and jewelry designers, street art and pop culture, which turns every IGS into a four-day art experience marathon.  The world is being introduced to Nový Bor, Liberec Region and the Czech Republic as a significant glass destination. The event has an enormous significance for the local glass region, for promotion of Czech glass and Czech glassmaking craft in the world. It contributes to preserving intangible cultural inheritance, and finally, it serves an important function for collectors. The 15th edition of the International Glass Symposium (IGS) will take place from October 3 to 6, 2024 in Nový Bor in North Bohemia and its surrounding area. Preparations have been underway since spring to ensure the participation of more than 40 selected artists or creative pairs from 15 countries around the world. They will create their works of art in collaboration with top glass craftsmen of various professions, whether they are master glass blowers, grinders, engravers, or glass painters, but also experts in the field of slumped or melt glass and other techniques. Several glass companies and specialized workshops and operations will be available to them, including Ajeto. Petr Novotný (1952-2024) enters the Hall of Fame of the International Glass Symposium next week, https://www.igsymposium.cz/aktuality-en In celebration of IGS 2024, ToYG speaks with David Ševčík, the director of Glassworks Ajeto as well as Ricardo Hoineff, who moved to Prague, Czechoslovakia, in 1991. In 2010 at the age of 41, Hoineff decided to take a two-week glass course that turned into three years of creation and production of art glass at the Higher Vocational School of Glassmaking Nový Bor. He is still kiln forming art glass in Slunečná, North Bohemia.

Michael of Gather Brewery & Glassworks and Alexander of Lovebird Snack Club joined Cee and Nate to chat about the logistics and challenges of opening a bottle shop in Ontario, why it's so difficult to maneuver around the laws, the benefits and downsides of both approaches (starting a contract brewery then a bottleshop vs starting a bottleshop then a contract brewery), the limitations of contract brewing, working with the LCBO, the bureaucracy of alcohol sales in Ontario, how it works with licensees, and their future plans for their beers. It's a creative, but uneven, tale of four generations trying, and often failing, to connect with and support one another.Terri's random recommendation is the latest album (collection of songs?) from HARDY, titled "Quit!!" A giant in the classical minimalist movement, Philip Glass revisits some of his most loved pieces on his latest compilation, Solo.  Today, on his 87th birthday, we witness the music from the very piano which helped create some of his most prominent works as he absorbed the energy of the city in his NYC apartment. ‘Opening” is a widely revered composition from the 1982 album Glassworks.

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for October 1, 2023 is: echt • EKHT • adjective Echt is an adjective used mostly in formal or literary speech and writing as a synonym of authentic, genuine, and true. // An echt New Englander wouldn't dream of putting tomatoes in their clam chowder. See the entry > Examples: “There is a version of ‘Tao'—call it the best piece of theater we never saw—that would have featured [Philip] Glass playing piano alongside the action onstage. But early in development, the idea was shot down by his manager; Glass just didn't have the time. But his score is a substantial, crucial contribution. This is late Glass—far from the echt Minimalist sound of ‘Glassworks'…” — Joshua Barone, The New York Times, 31 Mar. 2023 Did you know? When it comes to uncommon-but-nifty words, echt is true-blue, the real deal, the genuine article. (Actually it's an adjective, not an article, of course—but you get the drift.) The earliest known use of echt—a synonym of true and genuine—in English is credited to playwright George Bernard Shaw, who used the word in a 1916 journal article. Shaw borrowed echt directly from German, but since then others have also adapted the Yiddish word ekht, meaning “true to form.” Both the German echt and Yiddish ekht share the same Middle High German source, both contributed to the English echt, and both, therefore, are the real (etymological) McCoy.

Kenneth von Roenn: The Architectural Application of Expressive Glass

Kenneth von Roenn Jr. has designed and executed more than 1,500 commissions in the U. S., Middle East, Far East, Europe, Canada and Mexico. His work has been published in more than 75 books, magazines, and digital publications, and he has received more than 25 awards for work, including two hall of fames and lifetime achievement for the state of Kentucky. Von Roenn has also written and lectured on the topics of art in architecture, the evolution of architectural glass art, and the development and concerns of public art.  This Sunday, October 1, 2023, von Roenn will present examples of the architectural application of expressive glass and an introduction of what is on the horizon at the Stained Glass Association of America's conference, Forging New Paths, held September 27 – October 1, 2023 in Buffalo, New York. Also, a new documentary film of von Roenn's work by the noted film maker Sam Halstead has just been released. Says von Roenn: “As an architect, I am primarily concerned with the sympathetic relationship between my works of art and the buildings of which they are but a part and parcel. Harmonious integration is achieved when the work expresses a visual dialogue with the architecture by responding to the particular character and specific needs of a building.”  Von Roenn was born in 1948 in Louisville, Kentucky. As a young man, his interests were athletic, primarily in springboard and platform diving. He attended Florida State University on a full athletic scholarship, while also pursuing his interests in fine art, philosophy and English, earning a bachelor's degree in 1970.  Beginning his career in glass later that year at Louisville Art Glass, von Roenn was promoted to General Manager and in 1975 to President of the studio. In the early ‘70s he was an active member of the Stained Glass Association of America, serving on the executive committee and also as chairman of the publications committee. During this period, he compiled a body of innovative architectural glass artwork and established the studio as one of the most aesthetically and technically progressive in the country. He wrote regularly for several magazines on the topic of glass in architecture and taught courses in architectural art at the University of Kentucky School of Architecture from 1974 to ‘76.  Recognizing a need to pursue his evolving interest in architecture, von Roenn took a leave of absence from the studio in 1977 to pursue a master's degree in architecture at Yale University, graduating in 1981. While at Yale, von Roenn further developed his interest in architectural art through work with the architect/sculptor Kent Bloomer, which was culminated with his independent thesis entitled, “The Primary Modalities of Art's Relationship to Architecture: Integration, Juxtaposition and Synthesis.” While still in graduate school he founded in 1979 the von Roenn Studio Group in Branford, Connecticut, which designed and produced glass, architecture, graphics and furniture, executing commissions nationally and internationally.  In 1983, von Roenn returned to Louisville and worked for two architectural firms before establishing an architectural practice with two partners to form Bailey, Preston, von Roenn Architecture. Also at this time he returned to competitive diving, which culminated with winning 10 National Championship titles and two World Championship titles, setting two world records at the age of 41. Having achieved his earliest goal of becoming a world champion, von Roenn turned his exclusive attention to his true passion, expressive glass in architecture.  Recognizing a need for the development of expressive architectural glass, in 1991 von Roenn bought the Louisville Art Glass Studio and renamed it Architectural Glass Art, Inc. He expanded and reorganized the company, redirecting its focus on new roles and opportunities for glass in architecture. The studio quickly became recognized for its innovative application of new technologies in the execution of architectural glass art. Within the studio he served as the director of design and CEO/President, managing a staff of 30 and directing the exploration and development of techniques and technologies in glass fabrication. Von Roenn designed, and his studio produced, the world's largest glass sculpture, which crowns the top of the 3 Wells Fargo Center in Charlotte, North Carolina. This work weighs more than 500,000 pounds, can be seen from miles away and is designed to withstand hurricane force winds.  In the late ‘90s, von Roenn's desire to expand the studio led to his search for a new space. During this period, he joined with a group of developers and investors interested in the revitalization of downtown Louisville as well as the region's firm commitment to the arts. The group, guided by von Roenn's vision of a multipurpose glass facility, formulated a concept for Glassworks. From the original idea of a new home for Architectural Glass Art, von Roenn created a space for more than 50 glass artists to work and sell their art. He owned and oversaw the two galleries, a public workshop, a tour program, a special events program, the glass blowing studio, and a mobile glass blowing van powered by vegetable oil, all of which comprised Glassworks. More than 125,000 people visited Glassworks annually, which made it one of Louisville's most popular tourist attractions. In 2012 von Roenn sold his interest in Glassworks to focus his attention exclusively on architectural glass art.  In addition to designing his own projects, von Roenn has also collaborated with several significant artists on major projects including Al Held, Jose Bedia, Laura Battle, Thomas Sayre, and Jennifer Bartlett. He has also worked with many of the leading American architects including Cesar Pelli, Charles Moore, William Turnbull, Thomas Ventulett, Graham Gund, Turan Duda, Gyo Obata, David Rockwell, Peter Marino, Mark Simon, to name a few.  Von Roenn's work has been published in numerous books and in many major architecture magazines, including a feature article on his work in Architecture magazine. He has lectured extensively throughout North America and Canada and has written dozens of articles on art and architecture. Von Roenn has received numerous awards, including the Faith and Form Visual Arts Grand Award, American Crafts Award for Architectural Art, the AIA Allied Professional Award, the DuPont Benedictus Award, the Corning Museum Award, the Al Smith Fellowship, Tau Sigma Delta Architecture Fraternity Award, five Ministry & Liturgy's Bene Awards and 10 CODAworx Awards. In addition, von Roenn received the Crystal Award for his design of a glass bridge for the Louisville arena. This project has been recognized as a technological tour de force for the way in which artistic glass was used as a primary structural element for the bridge. He has been inducted into the American Glass Hall of Fame as well as the Atherton High School Hall of Fame and was named one the 25 most influential art professionals in the Midwest by Dialogue magazine. He was presented with the Governor's Award in the Arts for Lifetime Achievement in 2011 by the governor of Kentucky, which is the highest honor bestowed on a Kentucky artist.  In 2013 von Roenn decided it was time to begin to slow down (primarily at the urging of his domestic partner, Ursula Vourvoulis). He closed Architectural Glass Art and moved to Tallahassee, Florida, to work with Florida State University on the development of a new public art program. At FSU von Roenn also served as the Director of the Master Craftsman Studio as well as the founder of the Public and Architectural Art program. As a professor, von Roenn taught courses in public and architectural art as well as sculpture and creative entrepreneurship. He did not renew his contract with FSU in 2016 so he could once again turn his attention exclusively back to glass. That year, von Roenn was invited to present the keynote address to the American Glass Guild annual conference in Chicago.  With his move to Florida, von Roenn established Kaiser / von Roenn Studio with his partner Vourvoulis and serves as its Design Director. K/vR Studio's focus is on large-scale architectural glass projects nationally and internationally. Since its inception in 2013, K/vR Studio has completed major projects in Manilla, Philippines, Dublin, Ireland, Austin, Dallas and El Paso, Texas, Nashville, Tennessee, Denver, Colorado, Los Angeles and San Diego, California, Washington DC and Miami, Florida. He lectures frequently on the topic of public art and its role in communities as well as the role of artistic glass in architecture.  Says von Roenn: “As an artist and craftsman, I emphasize the poetic expression of glass or acrylic as it is animated with light by enhancing and employing its inherent and intrinsic characteristics and qualities. In developing Fluidity and the Ordered Turbulence pieces, I was primarily concerned with ensuring that the composition involved the viewer mentally and visually in a manner appropriate to its context. I believe that if viewers are to fully understand a thematic concept, they should mentally construct their own meaning, and that my role as both artist and architect is to assist, encourage, inspire and direct that effort.”

Three local librarians share their top summer reading picks

Summer 2023 is upon us, and we're ready to bury our faces in a book we can't wait to read. As bestselling author Stephen King notes, “books are a uniquely portable magic,” and they're often on the move during the summer months: jammed into jean pockets, lining beach towels, and stacked up on vacation bedside tables. For our annual summer reading special, three local librarians return with their curated lists from 2023's best offerings — from thrillers to young adult novels, to romance and science fiction. “The book opens right here in Cambridge, Massachusetts, in 1910, where Agnes Carter, a wealthy donor to a university, which is presumably Harvard, hires a naturalist and glassblowing phenom from Bohemia to create a collection of glass botanical models,” said Susannah Borysthen-Tkacz, senior librarian at the Cambridge Public Library, about one of her summer reading favorites, Glassworks by Olivia Wolfgang-Smith. “Meanwhile, Agnes is struggling with her own suffocating marriage and becomes increasingly enmeshed in this glass artist's life. … And the common thread through all of it is glass. And it sort of is a metaphor for the delicate structure of the family. We see their families shatter and sort of rebuild itself over and over again.” Robin Brenner, teen librarian at the Public Library of Brookline, chose Malcolm Kid and the Perfect Song by Austin Paramore in part because it is written for younger teens: “It plays on the idea of making a deal with the Crossroads Devil, for music, which is something I've always enjoyed as a trope and certainly comes from true jazz mythology and jazz history. And in this case, it's a young man who is trying to prove that he wants to be a musician and, specifically, playing piano, but cannot afford his own keyboard and is kind of desperate to prove to his dad, who's very disapproving of the idea of this as a career. And he reconnects with an old friend from the neighborhood and ends up making a deal that he doesn't realize he's making with this very shady store owner who gives him a keyboard for free. Of course, there is a different price for it.” “There's a king, he has three sons, he sends them out on various, completely ridiculous quests," said Veronica Koven-Matasy, reader services librarian at the Boston Public Library, about one of her recommendations, White Cat, Black Dog by Kelly Link. “And the youngest son finds himself at the house of a white cat who mysteriously can talk. And all of her servants are cats, and they mysteriously produce all the things that he needs to succeed in his quest. … He is supposed to bring back a bride. And he says, ‘Oh, I don't really want to bring back a wife.' And the white cat says, ‘Oh, you bring me.' And he has to prove his faith in her by cutting off her head when she tells him to. And then immediately a beautiful woman springs out. And, you know, it's the perfect woman. And obviously he's the superior son who brought back the superior bride. And he gets to be the king. … You enjoy being surprised by stories as well as well as just really enjoying the beautiful prose that's carrying you through. I really recommend [this], I was shocked many times.” GUESTS Susannah Borysthen-Tkacz, senior librarian at the Cambridge Public Library Robin Brenner, teen librarian at the Public Library of Brookline Veronica Koven-Matasy, reader services librarian at the Boston Public Library

Hellooooo and welcome back to Cracked with Chevonne Ariss! Today's guest is Jax Partlow. Jax Partlow is a glass artist based in Los Angeles. While formally trained in graphic design, Jax prefers the longevity and physical aspects that glasswork affords her, as well as a very tangible connection with her late father. It was only after she was left his tools that she gravitated toward the craft while living in Hungary. Thoughtful, romantic and functional, stained glass fulfills a creative desire for Jax as an artist, while meeting her designer side with its utilitarian appeal. She is most recognized for her Public Piece Project in which she installs her art in unlikely spaces. It's my favorite. It's so smart and cool and she's my absolute favorite street artist. Jax's work has been featured in Stained Glass Magazine, The Corning Museum of Glass: New Glass Review 2022 and by her own accord in the streets of Los Angeles.Let's get into it.Join me as I crack it wide open!Watch Jax and I here: https://youtu.be/dCer2e0t8r8Kintsugi wikipedia.orgLarry Bellguggenheim.orgEgon Schiele “Mother and Child”wikiart.orgLeopold Museum in Vienna leopoldmuseum.orgHelen Frankenthalerfrankenthalerfoundation.orgEtel Adnaneteladnan.comWillem de Kooningdekooning.org Elaine Marie Catherine de Kooningwikipedia.orgQuinn Gilmer@mdrnwldngPaul Lozano@compasssssionSzápör Klub@szaporklubBad BunnyJax's Bad Bunny Songs Playlist

Today's guests are the dynamic duo Nadine Keegan and Tom Medicus. I was able to catch them both at the same time while Nadine is visiting Tom's studio in Austria. Although their work is strikingly different, they both have done a brilliant job bringing meaningful topics and statements into their work. Keep listening and you'll agree! Join me as I crack it wide open... Nadine: After spending 3 years studying fine art photography at RMIT and PIC, she became disillusioned with the orthodox methods of image making and work style of a fine art photographer.  A few years past and many less artistic pursuits were explored when, with a visit to the solar-punk stained glass mural Cosmovitrial in Toluca, Mexico she finally discovered the creative industry which aligned with her ideals. While realizing the potential that exists within the craft that I had not yet seen in Australia.  Solidifying her obsession with research into the stained glass window's development through the 20th century, with the manifestations of the Arts and Crafts anti-industrialisation ideals embedded in it's design and construction.  Through her work, she celebrates both the legacy of the craft laid out before her and the potentiality of the materials when manipulated with a contemporary perspective and up-to-date technology. Her experience includes custom stained glass fabrication, heritage restoration, architectural glass work and exhibition works. To see more of Nadine's work, her instagram is @nadinekeegan. Tom: Thomas Medicus is a visual artist based in Innsbruck, Austria. Best known for his anamorphic cubes he also works in other fields such as illustration, animation, digital art, stained glass, restoration and conservation as well as public art. He studied social work at MCI Innsbruck before attending the Glasfachschule Kramsach, a school for glass art, where he earned a master glaziers degree later. In addition to his independent activity as a freelance artist, he was employed in the long-standing firm for stained glass windows Tiroler Glasmalerei for seven years. From the beginning of 2021 he became completely independent and founded his company Studio Medicus. To see more of Tom's work, his instagram is @tomedicus. Her own work consists of stained glass panels that have multi – layered, painted glass images that are inspired by the Peak District, its nature, history and folklore. "I use images of creatures, landscape features and organic motifs to create these glass panels."  The glass is hand painted using traditional stained glass paints and translucent enamels, often using many layers and textures, that are fired in the kiln.  They are assembled using lead and solder.  Let's get into it… Join me as I crack it wide open!! For the Cracked Patreon page Jane is gifting one of her blackbird eating a warm small suncatcher pieces that's about 9cm or just about 3.5” and also a pack of 5 owl rondel greeting cards.  Trained as an architect, Josephine A. Geiger's glass art is inspired by hidden depths in the landscape. These scenes are distilled into a bold palette of rectangles and squares of colored light as she translates a photo or sketch with an Impressionistic eye, capturing the essence of the subject. Josephine's process is organically linear, adding, shifting, flipping, or removing glass elements until the visual puzzle is finally solved — often in surprising ways.In addition to a steady stream of private commissions (even a chicken coop), Josephine's artwork is represented in various installations and public collections. Josephine also recently created and installed an original skylight on the Frank Lloyd Wright Lovness Estate in Minnesota. As you know, at the end of all my episode's I always ask my guest what their 5-10 year goals are. It's been interesting…majority of the time, artists that are known for making smaller pieces say they would like to make larger pieces and get into more installation work and artists that make larger pieces say they would like to come back to making the smaller pieces they started with. Like many of you I usually make smaller pieces that don't require much more than some sturdy hooks to install. But I too have been wanting to grow and expand into doing something bigger. That opportunity came! I just finished my first commercial installation and as I made my way through the project there were a lot of steps that were new to me. I was very lucky to have a mentor helping me through the process. A very talented and experienced artist, Ted Ellison from Theodore Ellison Designs, based in Oakland. His first episode of Cracked was released October 5th 2021, episode 5, Season 1.I asked Ted if he would be open to come back on with me and co-host an episode recapping my experience and together we could pass on the advice and guidance he had given me.Join us as we crack it all wide open!To see more of Ted's work, his instagram is @theodoreellisondesigns and mine is @runaglassworks.Honorable mentions from this episode:Unishippers (LTL):go.unishippers.comT shaped  furniture mending plates:https://amzn.to/37ZLUvtLink to digital downloads:runaglassworks.com/shop Canfield Technologies Canfield sets the standard for the Stained Glass industry. In 1897, The Judson Studios was established in Los Angeles by the painter and professor William Lees Judson and his three sons. Helmed by Walter Horace, the eldest son and a stained glass expert, the Studios thrived from the start, beautifying the booming metropolis with works that represented the best in traditional and modern design. Today, Judson is the oldest family-run stained glass studio in America, still proudly offering an exquisite, handcrafted product made by local artisans, and continuing to serve the community that has sustained us through the decades. Today I'm speaking with David Judson. He's been working hard to grow and stretch his family business into exciting new territories and  has recently released Judson: Innovation in Stained Glass , a book to document the nearly 125-year history of Judson Studios. We're going to chat about that, as well as the power of collaboration, current and future projects happening at Judson and the unique impact and legacy David would like to leave with the industry. Join me as I crack it all wide open!To see more of the work coming out of Judson Studios, their instagram is @judsonstudios and their website is judsonstudios.com.Honorable mentions from this episode:Where to find the book:"JUDSON: Innovation in Stained Glass"judsonstudios.com/product(There's a 20% discount available to the Cracked Patreon members! Traditional or Classical to homes or workplaces, her studio Silverstain Glass is bringing glass beauty into the world with a range of techniques. Anika has that great freedom of expression in stained glass that I admire so much. Because of her limited access to materials early on, she learned to mix and match techniques to get the products unavailable to her, like creating her own flash glass. Anika's work is an extrordinary medley of layering enamels, silverstain, matting, etching, slumping…she explains to us today how anything is possible and there really is no limitation to what you can do with a kiln and paints. In episode 16 I'm joined by Flora Jamieson of The Round Window. Flora is a stained glass artist who takes on a wide variety of stained glass commissions as well as her own contemporary designs. Her personal style is inspired by graphic design, the natural world, organic forms and geometric patterns. Color palettes are bold yet simple, lead lines are meticulous and purposeful and patterns are hand-painted and repetitive, with the fluidity and texture of the brush stroke telling part of the story.Flora is also a freelance glass painter for stained glass studios in the UK and further abroad. Specializing  in reproduction of Victorian Bird Roundels, she seeks to be as faithful to the traditional techniques as possible, having studied many beautiful original examples over the past 18 years.  She has  worked on several church windows in conjunction with other stained glass studios, painting replicas of damaged pieces. Today Flora is  is getting technical for all of us who want to know the details of her glass painting wizardry and even has some book suggestions  - the same ones she used to learn actually - for those of us that don't have access to an in-person glass painting class.
