Ever wondered why medieval women were out there plucking their hairlines like their lives depended on it? Join me as we dig into the bizarre beauty trend that left brows bald and foreheads freakishly high. Turns out, looking like a pious, pale ghost was peak hotness in the Middle Ages. We're talking virtue, control, and erasing yourself to fit an impossible ideal. Strap in—it's about to get weird.Are. You. Hello Foreign Exchanges fans and welcome to another entry in our very irregular podcast series! This time around I'm delighted to welcome to the show Dr. Eleanor Janega. Dr. Janega is a medieval historian, specializing in sexuality, propaganda, apocalypticism, urbanity, and empire in the late medieval and early modern periods. You may have heard her on one of her popular history podcasts, Gone Medieval and We're Not So Different (check out their fantastic two part Ibn Battuta program) and her many guest appearances on other shows (like American Prestige, not once but twice), or read her blog, Going Medieval. She is also author of The Middle Ages: A Graphic History and the book we're talking about in this interview, The Once and Future Sex: Going Medieval on Women's Roles in Society. We'll talk about women in medieval literature, whether women are actually inside-out men, and how babies are really made. And we'll talk a lot about medieval men being weird about women. So very, very weird. We'll also discuss how life for modern women has, and has not, changed. Enjoy! Many thanks to Jake Aron of American Prestige for producing the show, and as always our music is Cambodian Odyssey by Kevin Macleod (CC by 3.0).Please pick up Dr. Janega's book, available now in hardcover and paperback as well as audiobook. And if you haven't checked out Foreign Exchanges please do that too: This is a public episode. Confabulating with Eleanor Janega: Dr Eleanor Janega is a medieval historian. Going Medieval (https://going-medieval.com/tag/podcasts/) is a project aimed at making medieval history accessible and entertaining for non-expert audiences. What makes for the ideal woman? How should she look, love, and be? Eleanor Janega teaches medieval and early modern history at the London School of Economics. She's the creator of the blog Going Medieval and the author of The Once and Future Sex, a new book exploring the ideals of womanhood in the medieval period. Featuring medieval pick-up artists and beauty standards inspired by the Bible, Eleanor's conversation about it with Luke Naylor Perrott is funny, thought-provoking, and not suitable for children. The codices and manuscripts of the Middle Ages are littered with the acts of kings and the edicts of bishops, full of tales of knightly romance and monkish devotions. Read between the lines, though, and you'll find the women who made the medieval world run: bookkeepers and brewers, weavers and wine merchants, serfs and sex workers. They never got credit for it, and even their first names are often obscured by those of their husbands and fathers, but their lives were much richer and more varied than we have been led to expect. Eleanor Janega, who teaches medieval and early modern history at the London School of Economics, devotes her new book, The Once and Future Sex, to these ordinary and extraordinary women. Her analysis of the ways in which their lives were circumscribed shows how radically gender norms have changed—though not always improved—since the so-called dark ages.Go beyond the episode:Eleanor Janega's The Once and Future Sex: Going Medieval on Women's Roles in SocietyOn her blog, Going Medieval, read Janega's take “On beer, or, why chicks rock” or peruse the index of medieval subjectsJanega's podcast about the Middle Ages, “We're Not So Different” considers “how we've always been idiots”Smarty Pants has gone medieval itself: in this interview with Mary Wellesley about the ordinary lives in manuscripts, or this conversation with Jack Hartnell about physicality and the bodyWe also love The London Review of Books's podcast miniseries, “Close Readings: Encounters with Medieval Women,” hosted by Wellesley and Irina DumitrescuTune in every week to catch interviews with the liveliest voices from literature, the arts, sciences, history, and public affairs; reports on cutting-edge works in progress; long-form narratives; and compelling excerpts from new books. We tend to associate the Middle Ages with plagues and pestilence. Author and historian Dr Eleanor Janega lectures on medieval history at London School of Economics at the University of London and has just written a book called The Middle Ages: A Graphic History and it busts the myth of the 'Dark Ages' which sheds light on the medieval period's present-day relevance.

When most Americans think about Medieval times, our brains either go to a chain restaurant or an all-white version of Medieval Europe that never really existed. The myth is so pernicious, white supremacists have used it to draw people to their cause for more than a hundred years. So, while we still hear a lot about the Vikings, the Celts, and the supposed "Anglo-Saxons," what were those groups really like? And what does our misunderstanding of the Middle Ages mean for how we view our world today? We discuss all this and more. Want to support 1A? WE'RE BACK, BABY. After accidentally plugging The Dig twice last season, I finally watched it! It's fine! In this episode, Hannah Taylor and I discussed the representation of women in archaeology, why "Anglo-Saxon" is nonsense, and trying to make digging cool. A couple of suggested readings on the use of "Anglo-Saxon" and "dark ages": this New York Times article from 2019 about Medieval studies and racists M. Rambaran-Olm's excellent three part primer, including a bibliography Erik Wade's twitter threads Dr Eleanor Janega's blog, Going Medieval, especially this one about imperialism Follow Hannah on twitter @hannatale Historical Friction is a podcast about storytelling, pop culture, the past, and why we reenact it. Going Medieval: How Pop Culture Reflects the Past - Dr. Paul Sturtevant The Not Old Better Show, Smithsonian Associates Series Welcome to The Not Old Better Show. I'm Paul Vogelzang, and this is episode #495. As part of our Smithsonian Associates Art Of Living series, our guest today is Dr. Paul Sturtevant. Dr. Paul Sturtevant is an historian and social scientist at the Smithsonian, editor-in-chief of The Public Medievalist online magazine, and author of two books that examine the intersections between the Middle Ages and the present day. The Middle Ages are everywhere in our pop culture. Just look at “Game of Thrones” and the latest Hollywood blockbusters. Knights and castles are all over video, tabletop, and role-playing games. And we can spend a day at a medieval-style festival and an evening at a theme restaurant featuring jousts, swordplay, and revelry. Why are we so culturally obsessed with this distant time period? What, if anything, can these pop-culture rehashes of history tell us about the past? And perhaps more revealing, what can the ways that we re-imagine the medieval era tell us about how we see ourselves today? Join me today, with Dr. Paul B. Sturtevant as we take a colorful journey through the castles, cathedrals, and battlefields dreamed up by contemporary culture. He examines how history is not just history: that what we remember, and how we remember it, is always a mirror that reflects ourselves. My thanks to Dr. Paul Sturtevant for his generous time today. My thanks, as well, to the generosity of the Smithsonian Associates team and for all they do to support the show. My thanks, too, to you, our wonderful Not Old Better Show audience. Please practice smart social distancing, be safe, and remember, let's talk about better. The Not Old Better Show. Thanks, everybody. If you ever thought the Middle Ages were boring, has Dr Eleanor Janega got some news for you. Expertly weaving 21st century pop culture with medieval history, Janega's blog “Going Medieval” is a treasure trove of historical fact which will also have you stitches. In this episode we explored conceptions of sex in medieval times, how a conversation about sec demons managed to collide with Trump and coronavirus, how a 12th century philosopher was an early Kanye West and why women were considered to be cold and wet and desperate for sex. Warning: This episode does mention sex, so maybe save for when little or sensitive ears aren't listening in. Today I had a hypnotherapy session and I found myself in the Middle Ages via my subconscious, of course. More on that here!
#Episode #9 GOING MEDIEVAL ON YOUR SNÆFELLSNES Snufflegrass? Schnozzlefat? Snookerflip? No, it's Snæfellsnes week! Lydia and Jonas get real with the story of Guðríður the far-traveller, a 10th-century bad-ass Snæfellsnesian lady who went through husbands like kleenex, summered in Greenland, wintered in Manhattan, dropped in on her friend the pope in Rome, probably met an alien, and definitely pulled some legendary party tricks involving a freaky-deaky fortune-teller, some cat-skin gloves and a bowl of "goatmeal" (that's oatmeal with goat's milk, in case you're wondering). Later in the episode: Lydia and Jonas discuss what to do when visiting Guðríður's old stomping ground, Snæfellsnes peninsula. THIS IS NOT SPONSORED CONTENT, Y'ALL. FER REAL. Just so you know, we are absolutely not getting paid for any of this. None of this is an advertisement or sponsored content or a "collaboration" (can you sense our collective eye roll?) with any companies or organizations or whatever other euphemism you have for getting paid to pretend something is your honest opinion. This is pure, unadulterated solid gold from our brainses. Enjoy. Wanna say thank you? Rate us and/or leave us a review. SHOW NOTES In this episode we mention a few places to visit. Go nuts with our Google Map (we made it just for you with ♥︎) Other links Guðríður Þorbjarnadóttir Wiki page on Guðríður - Just the facts, ma'am. Somehow this page misses all the fun parts of her life. The Vinland Sagas - If you're interested in reading the sagas of the first Norse people who traveled into America, this is a great translation. Don't get it confused with the Japanese Manga series by the same name (which could actually turn out to be a happy little accident if you're a Manga fan). Top 5 Vikings listicle according to MHM - Although she wasn't really a Viking and this is a really terrible "artist rendering", big ups to Military History Monthly for giving their #1 viking slot to a bad-ass lady.
