In the compelling second half of Lisa Bilyeu's conversation with Jason Wilson, the focus shifts to solution-oriented frameworks and the revolutionary concept of “the comprehensive man.” Jason breaks down the key differences between the traditional masculine man—trapped by stoicism, performance, and aggression—and the comprehensive man, who brings emotional range, compassion, and true partnership into every area of his life. Lisa and Jason walk through the “green flags” of a healthy, emotionally mature partner, drawing a practical roadmap for women and men seeking deep, lasting connections. Jason explores the roles of fighter, provider, leader, lover, nurturer, friend, husband, father, and son, explaining how each archetype transforms when a man is free from cultural conditioning. Together, they address building boundaries, overcoming generational trauma, healing, and how both men and women must re-learn what it means to love and be loved. If you're ready to drop outdated scripts and build real intimacy, this powerhouse conclusion will inspire you to rethink everything you know about relationships. Many of the most prominent social activists in the last half century or so have also been contemplatives: Howard Thurman, the Dalai Lama, and Thomas Merton among others. Does the sort of spirituality we talk about here have things to offer in a world like ours where people feel daily outrages flowing through their media feeds? Might our practices actually be negative--in that moving past constant reactivity might make us too passive? But surely constant outrage mostly leads to hopelessness (and unpleasant days). Dave Schmelzer is joined by Grace Schmelzer and Steve Joh (a former pastor who currently leads a network of small, spacious, spiritual, Christian communities in the Bay Area) for a lively conversation about all of this, including a look at the most commonly discussed spiritual approach to addressing such times.Mentioned on this podcast:Register your interest in the next Faith Part 2 course here.Arbor communities in the Bay AreaThe Book of Forgiving: The Fourfold Path for Healing Ourselves and Our World, by Desmond Tutu and Mpho Tutu

Given our political situation in the United States, you may be hearing a lot of people–myself included–talk about living your values. Not just professing them, but really living them, even when it's uncomfortable. It's hard work that requires a lot of internal fortitude. But we so often default to acting against our values in order to protect ourselves and those we love from real or perceived danger–to our jobs, our reputations, dignity, physical safety, and more. We try to protect ourselves with compliance, while our silence does real harm to others. Those who have a history of relational trauma are especially likely to fear speaking up, even as they know their values and moral expectations are being violated. This collision of relational trauma with moral injury reinforces beliefs that the world is unsafe and that people in power cannot be trusted. My guest today is a survivor of abuse and cultish communities. Here is Craig's opening paragraph framework: Although this unscripted podcast began as a discussion of difficult conversations, it soon veered into how to engage in conversations about racism and war. We soon realized that the tools needed to engage fully may differ when conversations occur with friends, within a family, a community, a library board, a university, or a national dialogue. We acknowledge that the tragedy of slavery in this nation and the ongoing debates on how to resolve the legacy of slavery and Jim Crow have caused substantial harm to individuals and communities. We offer this podcast as an initial effort to broaden the conversation. One podcast's ideas for one type of dialogue, however, can never address all issues. We will offer subsequent podcasts to seek multiple opinions and ideas of how to seek the common good and a more perfect union. Our conversation with Professor Goode explores her recent book Agrotopias: An American Literary History of Sustainability. Two recent phrases form the impetus of her book: "We Can't Solve the Climate Crisis Unless Black Lives Matter" and "Climate Change Is also a Racial Justice Problem". Goode traces these back to the enigmatic Thomas Jefferson to illuminate and enmesh the supposedly protoecological American past with its racist and eugenic histories by analyzing agrotopias. She defines agrotopias as "seemingly ideal worlds of agrarian stability and productive labor" (3).   Below are the three texts Goode offers as examples of alternatives to Agrotopian thinking:   Earth Democracy - Vandana Shiva Braiding Sweetgrass - Robin Wall Kimmerer Replenishing the Earth: Spiritual Values for Healing Ourselves and the World - Wangari Maathai (As part of the Green Belt Movement)   For more on Abby Goode:   https://abbygoode.wordpress.com/     ASLE EcoCast: If you have an idea for an episode, please submit your proposal here: https://forms.gle/Y1S1eP9yXxcNkgWHA   Twitter: @ASLE_EcoCast Lindsay Jolivette: @lin_jolivette   If you're enjoying the show, please consider subscribing, sharing, and writing reviews on your favorite podcast platform(s)!   Episode recorded February 5, 2024. Tutu, a Nobel Peace Prize-winning Archbishop, draws on his experiences in South Africa's Truth and Reconciliation Commission to offer insights on the transformative power of forgiveness. The book begins by exploring the nature of forgiveness and its importance in healing personal and collective wounds. Tutu emphasizes that forgiveness is not about condoning or forgetting the harm done, but rather about letting go of the anger and resentment that can consume and poison our lives. He argues that forgiveness is a necessary step towards healing and reconciliation, both for individuals and societies torn apart by violence and injustice.Tutu presents a fourfold path to forgiveness, which he calls "Telling the Story, Naming the Hurt, Granting Forgiveness, and Renewing or Releasing the Relationship." He explains each of these steps in detail and provides practical exercises and meditations to help readers navigate their own forgiveness journeys.Throughout the book, Tutu shares personal stories and anecdotes, as well as stories of forgiveness from around the world. He highlights the courage and strength of individuals who have chosen forgiveness in the face of unspeakable pain and oppression, and how their acts of forgiveness have had far-reaching effects."The Book of Forgiving" also addresses the difficult question of forgiving oneself. Tutu acknowledges that self-forgiveness can be challenging, but emphasizes the importance of extending the same compassion and understanding to oneself as we would to others.Ultimately, Tutu argues...

The Book Leads - Episode 69: & The Gift 12 Lessons to Save Your Life by Dr. Edith Eger In this episode, Corinne, shares both insights from Dr. Eger's book and how those insights have benefitted her in her own life -- one of traumatic experience, forgiveness, and growth. Having experienced that journey herself, she brings her energy for life and wisdom through experience and learning to her coaching clients and retreat guests to help them heal from their own adversity. Like Dr. Eger conveyed to her patients and implored in her book, Corinne also wants those she's helping to recognize the light that exists beyond hopelessness. We all need to heal in some way, shape, or form. It may not be apparent, obvious, and evident on the surface, so it may take some reflection to explore and understand the deep-rooted reasons why we feel -- or react to the world -- in a certain way. The takeaway from this conversation that resonates with me most is that of intentional evolution through victimhood -- and the ability and need to get beyond that vulnerable state. Don't get us wrong. As we state in the episode, it's important we feel those sensations. So, after we have fully experienced and felt what that source of pain has left behind, we must do the work to step beyond it and build from that remaining rubble and ash. CONVERSATION HIGHLIGHTS Healing is body-based. It has to be. Victimhood is a mental prison. Dr. Dan Siegel's Hand odel of the Brain No one at the end of their life has the regret that they laughed or loved too much. What the acronym R.A.I.N. stands for when it comes to self-compassion. Frankl The MAIN QUESTION underlying my conversation with Corinne is, When you feel like a victim and you feel hopeless, what do (can) you see BEYOND those sensations? ABOUT CORINNE Corinne is a transformation expert serving women who experience challenging transitions – divorce, career change, empty nest, family estrangement, addiction and loss of a loved one. Through her uplifting energy, soothing demeanor, and extensive training in a mosaic of modalities – Internal Family Systems, Respectful Confrontation and Compassion-based therapies – Corinne guides women on a path of joy, connection and love, overcoming the pain of invisible loss. Because Corinne has experienced firsthand invisible loss and the power of healing in community, she leads intimate, small group retreat experiences in beautiful places all over the world as a foundation in creating the Healing the Heart Sisterhood. These intentional communities are comprised of women who are willing to do the deep soul work of Healing the Heart with vulnerability, compassion, and love. In addition to her coaching and retreats, Corinne has launched a weekly Mindfulness Class called Wisdom Wednesdays: Cultivating Calm for the Hurried Human, and that class began on September 20th. On episode 28 of the She is Kindred podcast, Britt holds space for Julie Klein's deeply personal story of being a cycle breaker.  Britt and Julie come together as mothers who deeply desire for the next generation to witness the power and redemption in true forgiveness so that we don't walk in the old ways of being. And the way to true forgiveness involves making the choice to engage in our grief, to move through the grief, and to accept that grief does not have a timeline. Julie Klein is a social worker/mental health counselor. Though she is not currently in the social work field, her heart remains hopeful for social justice in this fractured world. She currently stays home constantly herding and unschooling her intensely spirited children. A pour-over cup (or two or three) of coffee is her lifeline and keeps her in the game. She is a fierce advocate for showing up with vulnerability and authenticity, believes everyone has a powerful story to share, and is convinced words hold the unique power to connect with others. She writes at the intersection of her evolving faith and the joys of life, the inevitable grief of life, and the gray that is in-between. We are bound with chains of bitterness, tied together, trapped. Until we can forgive the person who harmed us, that person will hold the keys to our happiness; that person will be our jailor. “You are not obligated to forgive someone who has offered neither apology nor repair.” This opinion is one both April and Tracie have received at different points in their lives, and which is surfacing now as we approach the high holy days. And though we both needed to hear that message when it was delivered, we're also realizing that it is not the end of the story. The longing for healing and wholeness after hurt has us looking for a third way–a path toward teshuvah, or return, and wholeness, shalem/sh'lemut–even in the absence of apology. Share your insights or ask us a question at https://joyousjustice.com/jews-talk-racial-justice-questions.Join our mailing list at https://joyousjustice.com.  Check out our offerings and join one of our programs! https://joyousjustice.com/coursesFind April's TikTok videos here: https://www.tiktok.com/@aprilavivabaskin Follow us on Instagram (@joyous.justice), Twitter, (@JoyousJustice), or Facebook (www.facebook.com/joyousjustice365)Find April and Tracie's full bios and submit topic suggestions for the show at www.JewsTalkRacialJustice.comLearn more about Joyous Justice and join our mailing list: https://joyousjustice.com/Support the work our Jewish Black & Cherokee woman-led vision for collective liberation here: https://joyousjustice.com/support-our-workLearn more about Desmond Tutu and Mpho Tutu's work, The Book of Forgiving: The Fourfold Path for Healing Ourselves and Our World: https://www.harpercollins.com/products/the-book-of-forgiving-desmond-tutumpho-tutu?variant=32122225983522Read about the Japanese art of kintsugi, “golden joinery”: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/KintsugiTara Brach relays the story of the Golden Buddha in her work Radical Compassion: Learning to Love Yourself and Your World with the Practice of RAIN: https://www.tarabrach.com/books/radical-compassion/April and Tracie talked about the Golden Buddha in our first-ever Rosh Hashanah episode, Ep 2: Rosh Hashanah, Prince, and Visions, Both Big and Small: https://jewstalkracialjustice.buzzsprout.com/1146023/5430970-ep-2-rosh-hashanah-prince-and-visions-both-big-small

(1:43)Doing the work together and being together  (1:04)Quotes“There is every reason to be confident that we can better communicate across these painful differences in our experiences … healing ourselves first and then transforming our communities through mindfulness.  That is all possible and, you know, it is something that keeps me excited about bringing mindfulness into law, into social justice work, into our lives more fully at this time.”  Rhonda V. MageeOn Integrative Law“It's about holistic. It's about the opportunity for us to participate in healthy or therapeutic ways of interacting within a conflict scenario. It's about helping us see our own humanity and with humility to learn from each other about how to navigate this time. It's opening the door on the original medicine that each one of us brings into the law. What is that we might to do to deepen that sense that this is about a holistic process through which we might heal ourselves, heal the separateness between and amongst our communities, each other, and between human beings and our planet. To me, it about the notion of integrative – is fundamentally about healing separations --- and that I think is the deep call of this, not just this subfield or orientation to practicing law but of this moment. I feel like there is a reason – just all of us in a pause with coronavirus on the one hand, climate distress on the other, inequality happening at radical levels.  We are at a time where we, I feel, are called – called to really look at how are systems including the powerful system of law – - how these systems that we inherited and that we participate in are perpetuating separations that are not to the ultimate good of us as human beings or the planet. So, how can we bring our integrative repair, restorative dimension right into our particular role in the system.  That's the question that animates integrative law.”  Rhonda V. MageeOn Racial Justice“Justice is about love in action.  Racial justice is love in action for the alleviation of the harms of racism, the harms they do all of us, but certainly particularly those who are its targets and intended victims.  We're really bringing love and action to repair the separations – but to heal the separations and repair the harm of racism”Rhonda V. MageeTo me, that's the joy that comes in this work. It's not that we find the ultimate resolution of these big questions that have plagued humanity for all time.  It's that we recognize that in doing the work together, there is some sense of the resolution if, you know, the ending of suffering in being together in ways that make the most of the moments that we have…you how that is justice.”Rhonda V. Magee

Their discussion focused on healing the individual and intergenerational levels - and how this can support healing at the collective level. Jason was born in Apartheid South Africa during a year that saw the biggest student uprising that would change the history of the country forever. He is an intrepid traveler and explorer of diverse physical and cultural places around the world as well as the depth of his own being and psyche. He left his beloved birthplace Cape Town at the age of 17, in pursuit of identity, belonging, and truth. Jason has lived and is educated in three countries outside of South Africa, including Germany, England, and Taiwan, R.O.C. With a diverse background in Education, Entrepreneurship, Martial Arts, International Trade, and Investment Promotion, he now lives in South Africa to be part of the change. After a return to his home country, which has one of the highest gini coefficients (income inequality) in the world, Jason is in pursuit of a new set of skills for transformation — including regenerative agriculture, social permaculture, depth facilitation, co-counseling, deep listening, authentic relating, and collective trauma healing. He is the founder of a Compassionate Listening Circle for men and has started a Racial Affinity Group for brown bodied South African men. He is also one of the founders of the program "Rooting Through Chaos" focused on helping others develop resiliency and adaptability in times of increasing change and uncertainty. He is also a practicing coach and mentor including working with underserved youth in South Africa. To contact Jason: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jason-eng... Human migration is nothing new, but the scale at which people will need to relocate due to climate change will be different than ever before. A World Bank report estimates that over the next thirty years, 143 million people will be displaced within three of the most vulnerable regions alone: sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia, and Latin America. To handle such shifts in population, our governments and immigration systems will have to evolve. This challenge, and the stakes, are illustrated beautifully in the essay we're featuring this week. “Like the Monarch,” written by The New Yorker staff writer Sarah Stillman, explores the complex intersections between the climate crisis and human migration. It is read by actor, producer, director, and activist America Ferrera.  Sarah Stillman's essay, along with 40 other essays appear in the anthology co-edited by Dr. Ayana Elizabeth Johnson and Dr. Katharine Wilkinson called All We can Save: Truth, Courage, and Solutions for the Climate Crisis. Mahina Nani was born into a bloodline of Ancient Hawaiian Healers that is centuries old and carries the wisdom teachings of Ho’o’pono’pono.  In this episode of the Psychedelic Leadership Podcast, Mahani shares the meaning of H’o’pono’pono. By learning to take full responsibility for our actions and opening to the power of forgiveness, we can step into “right relationship” with ourselves and those around us. When we have the courage to do this, we can then put an end to intergenerational trauma and experience greater harmonious alignment in our lives.  This was also a special episode in honor of Mothers Day. My own mother, Lucy joined us for this conversation and after Mahina opens up a ceremonial container and channels a powerful prayer, my mother and I shed many tears of forgiveness as we share a real-time practice of Ho’o’pono’pono. In a tender and vulnerable moment, my mother asks for my forgiveness around a pre-natal birth trauma that was revealed to me in an ayahuasca journey.   Resources Mentioned  https://amzn.to/2PRe42U (Zero Limits: The Secret Hawaiian System for Wealth, Health, Peace, and More) https://amzn.to/3unKi4W (The Book of Forgiving: The FourFold Path for Healing Ourselves & The World) https://maryisis.bandcamp.com/track/hooponopono (Download Ho’o’pono’pono by Mary Isis for Free on Bandcamp) http://www.livefreelaurad.com/microdosing-mastermind (3-Month Microdosing Mastermind ) https://www.livefreelaurad.com/free-microdosing-course (Free 8-Day Microdosing Course) https://livefreelaurad.com/music-playlists (4 Music Playlists for Psychedelic Journey’s & Beyond)

In today’s episode of the Live Your Dreams awake podcast, I am with a very amazing woman that does a lot of stuff. A double board-certified licensed acupuncturist, an ordained spiritual minister, a Reiki Master, a feng shui consultant, and a shamanic priestess, we have Rev. Dr. Natalie Vail. We share the same interests and are very passionate about the things that we do. We will be talking about important things about transformation, therapy, healing, and the importance of following your calling. I enjoyed this conversation with Natalie, I hope you’ll like it too. Enjoy! REMEMBER - We're all in some sort of cosmic initiation process, every single soul that's here at this time, on some level, unconscious level, spiritual level, has a contract to be here. So that's why we're here. This week's tip is to clear and unblock your drains. Do you have blocked drains, this can represent blocked emotions in your life, but also feeling very stuck. So it's time to go around and make sure that all of your drains are very clear to release and let go of anything that's feeling stuck in your life, but also to allow you to move forward with ease and flow. It's teaching us to get out of our own way. It's teaching us what's really important, what are our priorities, how to take better care of ourselves, and what our actual needs are.”  “That disappointment is what helps us to understand what we actually want. So that disappointment that we're feeling is so vitally important and necessary for the process of actually manifesting our dreams. Because if you don't know what you don't want, how do you know what you actually do want?” “The stars really are our map for what's happening in the world.” “With astrology, what it really does is it speaks to the rational mind because humans are meaning-making creatures. So we need to make meaning from our suffering from our pain, and even from the good stuff that happens to us.”

It was a time to pivot, change, alter course. Dr. Larry Crabb met me at the junction. Larry went to be with his Papa, Jesus, and Spirit on Sunday, February 28, 2021. There are times I believe that God brings people across our path that have a long-lasting impact on our journey. I had just begun my pastoral ministry in 1998. I had the role of being a Community Chaplain in a large church where my focus was to provide pastoral care for those in our local area that had significant Mental Illnesses and disabilities. I was to develop a church community where people could come and feel at home. Teaching, pastoral care, and support that was specifically focused on the needs of this community. Prior to this, I had been a support worker helping people with serious Mental Illnesses with their daily lives. Over and over again, I would see them try to be part of Church communities only to see them not truly connect. Some church people would rescue them, preach at them, moralize them, and tell them to ‘try harder.’ In the end, Churches and the people in them weren’t safe. I was then handed a book by a former student of Dr. Larry Crabb. The book was Connecting. Healing Ourselves and Our Relationships.  In this book, Larry also talks about a pivot in this thinking. A subtle shift away from psychology to what he would later call Soul Care. In recent days, I have made a shift. I am now working toward the day when communities of God’s people, ordinary Christians whose lives regularly intersect, will accomplish most of the good that we now depend on mental health professionals to provide. And they will do it by connecting with each other in ways that only the gospel makes possible. I envision a community of people who intentionally mingle in settings where these nutrients are passed back and forth, where I pour into you the healing resources within me and you pour into me what God has put in you. But that’s not what I’m doing. I have strong reason to suspect that Christians sitting dutifully in church congregations, for whom “going to church” means doing a variety of spiritual activities, have been given resources that if released could powerfully heal broken hearts, overcome the damage done by abusive backgrounds, encourage the depressed to courageously move forward, stimulate the lonely to reach out, revitalize discouraged teens and children with new and holy energy, and introduce hope into the lives of the countless people who feel rejected, alone, and useless. Maybe “going to church,” more than anything else, means relating to several people in your life differently. Maybe the center of Christian community is connecting with a few. Beneath what our culture calls psychological disorder is a soul crying out for what only community can provide. There is no “disorder” requiring “treatment.” And, contrary to hard-line moralism, there is more to our struggles than a stubborn will needing firm admonishment. Beneath all our problems, there are desperately hurting souls that must find the nourishment only community can provide—or die. We must do something other than train professional experts to fix damaged psyches. Damaged psyches aren’t the problem. The problem beneath our struggles is a disconnected soul. And we must do something more than exhort people to do what’s right and then hold them accountable. Groups tend to emphasize accountability when they don’t know how to relate. Better behavior through exhortation isn’t the solution, though it sometimes is part of it. Rather than fixing psyches or scolding sinners, we must provide nourishment for the disconnected soul that only a community of connected people can offer. The crisis of care in modern culture, especially in the Western church, will not be resolved by training more therapists. We do not need a counseling center on every corner. It will be worsened by moralists who never reach deeply into the hearts of people in their efforts to impose their standards of behavior on others, even when those standards are biblical. The greatest need in modern civilization is the development of communities— true communities where the heart of God is home, where the humble and wise learn to shepherd those on the path behind them, where trusting strugglers lock arms with others as together they journey on. Dr. Larry Crabb. Connecting. Healing Ourselves and Our Relationships. I was hooked. He had connected with the thoughts and ideas swirling around in my thinking. From there, I read everything I could lay my hands on. He was my mentor. I traveled from here in New Zealand to Colorado Springs twice to sit under his teaching. I don’t believe anyone else has influenced me so greatly in my spiritual formation as Larry. The picture that captures us Recently there has been a huge outpouring of love and memories on the Larry Crabb Appreciation club. Images shared, and stories told. One image speaks so much. Larry Crabb by Janet Trenda‘A sweet memory from my time at SSD [School of Spiritual Direction]- catching Larry early in the morning handwriting, rewriting- his notes for the day. His passion and dedication are clearly shown here’. Janet Trenda A special memory for me was when I attended the School of Spiritual Direction in 2004 at Glen Eyrie, Colorado Springs. I had a very special one-to-one session with Larry. I went into this lovely lounge where Larry took off his shoes, put his feet up on the coffee table, and we had a chat. Then the thunder rolled. In those Rocky mountains, the thunderclaps were incredible. I have never heard thunder like it. I don’t remember much of what was said, but I do remember the atmosphere Larry brought to our time. Relaxed, friendly, gently inquisitive, unforced, shoes off, and love. Quotes Over the years, I have collected many quotes from the writings of Larry Crabb. Many of which have been sp[rinkled through the blog posts. Here are but a few. Real encouragement occurs when words are spoken from a heart of love to another’s recognized fear. Larry Crabb God has solutions for people who admit they have problems. Larry Crabb Our primary purpose is not to use God to solve our problems, but to move through our problems toward finding God. Larry Crabb A marriage bound together by commitments to exploit the other for filling one’s own needs (and I fear that most marriages are built on such a basis) can legitimately be described as a “tic on a dog” relationship. Just as a hungry tic clamps on to a nourishing host in anticipation of a meal, so each partner unites with the other in the expectation of finding what his or her personal nature demands. The rather frustrating dilemma, of course, is that in such a marriage there are two tics and no dog! Larry Crabb, The Marriage Builder Spiritual friends see a facet of Christ in us and bring it out as no one else can. And they delight to do so. When they see what is unique about us, it causes them great delight; and then, giving away to the powers of daring imagination, they envision what we could become. The vision excites them – with Paul, they see us where we are and feel the pains of labor till Christ is formed in us (Gal. 4:19). Larry Crabb. The Safest Place on Earth Brokenness is a condition, one that is always there, inside, beneath the surface, carefully hidden for as long as we can keep a facade in place. We live in brokenness. We just don’t always see it, either in ourselves or in others. Larry Crabb A central task of community is to create a place that is safe enough for the walls to be torn down, safe enough for each of us to own, and reveal our brokenness. Larry Crabb Supernatural goals need supernatural resources. Dr. Larry Crabb Larry Crabb Appreciation Club As an administrator of the Appreciation Club on Facebook, I recently asked the members for their favorite quotes and sentences. Here are a few of them. Where is your red dot? “Confused people listen better.” May we learn to dance with the Trinity! “Put Jesus on display.” Make a Margin for Uncertainty: Open Heart: Women are created to be relationally open and inviting! “Hush God is in it” by his late grandfather. “We have all been sinned against. We all sin. You have failed to love me as you should, and I have failed to love you. Your failure to love me is painful, sometimes profoundly disappointing. But the Lord‘s love for me is perfect. Although his love does not remove the sting of your failure, it gives me all I need to stand as a whole person, capable of loving you regardless of the threat of your further failure.” From Inside Out.  Too many marriages are like two ticks and no dog.  God meets you where you really are – not where you think you should be.  Words that open doors transmit two messages: 1.‘I am interested in whatever you have to say.’ 2.’I will accept you regardless of what you say.’” Larry Crabb The greatest lie believed today is that one can know God without being known by someone else. Larry Crabb Soul Talk The compelling vision is . . . maybe, because of our conversations, we can want God more than we want any lesser blessing. Larry Crabb  “Demand nothing here. Expect everything there. Surrender all rights to justice, to loving treatment from others to fulfilling ministry, to all the good things of this life, and you will be given tastes of the good things to come. That is how you taste the Lord and discover that He is good. It is those tastes that fill you with sustaining hope until you’re welcomed to the banquet.”  “Embrace your Inadequacy.” “Your pain is the distance between what you were created to have, Eden, and what you have now. Our hearts groan in anticipation of what lies ahead, our true home, heaven.” Larger Story As part of planning to continue his legacy of teaching, a few years ago, Larry’s son Kep established a new ministry called Larger Story. Larger Story will serve as the legacy of the thinking and writing and training and counseling I’ve been doing now for 50 years. Larry Crabb At Larger Story, they have amassed the many books, countless sermons and talks, and numerous videos Larry has done. Find out more about Larger Story here.  Hot coffee and Elvis A few final thoughts. Larry liked his coffee hot! He also enjoyed Elvis and slow dancing with his students while singing ‘Are you lonesome tonight.’ The final sentence in his last book ‘Waiting for Heaven‘ was this. Over time, anticipate becoming aware of actually meeting Jesus, face to face, and allow the “sheer delight” to move you toward WAITING FOR HEAVEN. Thank you, Larry. Enjoy the sheer delight of being with Jesus face to face. When it comes to longevity, the goal isn’t just to live as long as possible. The true objective is to live as vibrantly and energetically as possible, for as long as possible. So how exactly do we do this?On today’s Broken Brain Podcast, our host Dhru talks to Dr. Frank Lipman, a vocal pioneer of integrative and Functional Medicine, or what he calls “good medicine.” Dr. Lipman is the founder of Eleven Eleven Wellness Center and the Chief Medical Officer at The Well. He is a sought-after international speaker and the bestselling author of six books—How to Be Well, The New Health Rules, Young & Slim for Life, Revive and Total Renewal—and his newest book, The New Rules of Aging Well: A Simple Program for Immune Resilience, Strength, and Vitality. The Book of Forgiving: The Fourfold Path for Healing Ourselves and Our World was another life-changing, healing work by Nobel Peace Prize winner Desmond Tutu, following his book No Future Without Forgiveness. It was also highly recommended by Nelson Mandela. In the face of the harm and grief caused by apartheid and the pain of losing family members, how can we begin to heal our inner wounds? Revenge and grudges won't help us, but will only trap us in our suffering. Only forgiveness will lead to the emancipation of our soul. This book is brilliant as a practical guide to healing ourselves and the world.

On the surface, forgiveness seems like such a simple concept but it can be one of the most difficult things we ever do. Maybe someone in your life has hurt you and you've never been able to forgive them. Maybe you've hurt someone else and they haven't forgiven you. Maybe it's time to see if that can change. Mpho Tutu van Furth joins us to talk about a book she co-wrote with her father Desmond Tutu. It's called The Book of Forgiving. It's an invitation and a step-by-step guide to walk what the Tutu's call the four-fold path of forgiveness. Mpho recently visited Brigham Young University to speak at the Maxwell Institute's symposium, “Forgiveness & Reconciliation.” The Institute's own Dr. Deidre Green was the visionary of this truly remarkable gathering. If you missed it, you can watch several of the presentations on the Institute's YouTube channel. About the Guest Mpho Tutu van Furth served as executive director at The Desmond & Leah Tutu Legacy Foundation from 2011 to 2016. With her father, Desmond Tutu (former archbishop of South Africa, chairman of the Truth and Reconciliation Committee, and Nobel Peace Prize Recipient), she co-authored The Book of Forgiving: The Fourfold Path for Healing Ourselves and Our World (HarperCollins, 2015). In 2014, the father and daughter pair started the Tutu Global Forgiveness Challenge, an internet resource that guides people through the steps of forgiveness. Brad Sullivan 4 Lent, Year C March 6, 2016 Saint Mark’s Episcopal Church, Bay City, TX 2 Corinthians 5:16-21 Luke 15:1-3, 11b-32 The Parable of the Extravagantly Forgiving Father Everyone needs forgiveness. We need to give forgiveness, we need to receive forgiveness. We need the grace and healing that comes with forgiveness. That’s because we all have scars and wounds inflicted upon us over the course of our lives, and we are also all the cause of other peoples’ scars and wounds. As much as we need food, water, and air, we are starving and suffocating without forgiveness. Without forgiveness, our past wounds keep on hurting us over and over, and they keep us from living the life of God’s kingdom. Everyone needs forgiveness. That’s why God gives forgiveness so extravagantly. We call the parable which we heard today, “The Prodigal Son,” or the wasteful son. He spent his inheritance wastefully and extravagantly and then came back to his father, penniless and starving, begging for his father to let him work as one of his servants. The father ran out to him, having already forgiven him, and restored him, not as a servant, but as a son, and he threw a huge party in celebration that his son was back, essentially back from the dead. So, the title “the prodigal son” makes some sense, although, “the extravagantly forgiving father” might be a better title. Calling the story “the prodigal son,” however, ignores the other brother, the one who stayed with his dad, helped around the house, and then was indignant when his brother came home and was given a party. That, and the anger he had? Totally understandable. It wasn’t fair, he was basically saying, and he was right. It wasn’t fair. Of course he was angry, and forgiveness isn’t about being fair. Forgiveness is about what we need. Archbishop Desmond Tutu wrote a book on forgiveness which came out of the process of healing and the choice of forgiveness after apartheid in South Africa. He begins the book with a story of a woman and her daughter whose husband and father had been tortured, beaten, stabbed, dismembered, and killed. They were speaking to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission about the murder of their husband and father during apartheid in South Africa. They ended by saying, “I would love to know who killed my father. We want to forgive them. We want to forgive, but we don’t know who to forgive.” The perpetrators of this crime didn’t deserve forgiveness, but they needed it, wherever they were. The mother and daughter, also needed forgiveness. They had a need to give forgiveness. That was their desire. Archbishop Tutu wrote about them in his book, The Book of Forgiving: The Fourfold Path for Healing Ourselves and Our World. He wrote about the need we have to be forgiven and the need we have to forgive. He writes: To forgive is not just to be altruistic. It is the best form of self-interest. It is also a process that does not exclude hatred and anger. These emotions are all part of being human. You should never hate yourself for hating others who do terrible things: The depth of your love is shown by the extent of your anger. However, when I talk of forgiveness, I mean the belief that you can come out the other side a better person. A better person than the one being consumed by anger and hatred. Remaining in that state locks you in a state of victimhood, making you almost dependent on the perpetrator. If you can find it in yourself to forgive, then you are no longer chained to the perpetrator. You can move on, and you can even help the perpetrator to become a better person, too. The brother in Jesus’ parable had a need to forgive. After rumbling with his anger and resentment for a while, he needed to release those emotions and forgive his brother so that he was no longer consumed by the anger and resentment, so that he was no longer hurting himself. Forgiveness is the key to the parable Jesus told: Our need for forgiveness, our need both to give and to receive forgiveness. The parable really should be called the parable of the extravagantly forgiving father. Then the focus is not on how we mess up, but the focus is on who God is, our extravagantly forgiving Father. How beloved are we of God that he forgives us so extravagantly? All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ, and has given us the ministry of reconciliation; that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting the message of reconciliation to us. So we are ambassadors for Christ, (1 Corinthians 5:18-20) God knows that we only hurt because we have been hurt. We only break others only because we have been broken. As Archbishop Tutu writes: People are not born hating each other and wishing to cause harm. It is a learned condition. Children do not dream of growing up to be rapists or murderers, and yet ever rapist and ever murderer was once a child…Forgiveness is truly the grace by which we enable another person to get up, and get up with dignity, to begin anew. So, God has given us forgiveness and reconciliation to him, and then he has granted us to be his ambassadors that we might give forgiveness and reconciliation as extravagantly as he. Our ambassadorship is not easy, of course, because forgiveness is not easy. It was not easy for God to forgive and to reconcile the world to him. We hear time and again about God’s vengeance and his wrath. You can bet our sins anger God. Just as with our rumbling with our anger and resentment, God was angry at humanity for the harm we cause each other. Rather than exact vengeance on humanity, however, God took that anger and vengeance upon himself, becoming human, becoming Jesus, and suffering himself, suffering his own anger and vengeance on the cross. God’s forgiveness of us was not easy, but it was and is extravagantly given. The anger and resentment we feel when we have been hurt is, like God’s anger and resentment, understandable and justified. We need, however, to rumble with it and eventually to release it so that it no longer poisons us. Such is our need for forgiveness, both to give and receive forgiveness. And so we are ambassadors for Christ, constantly working to give and receive forgiveness, and constantly telling others of the extravagant forgiveness God has given us through Jesus, and of the healing that comes through forgiveness and reconciliation. Such healing is not easy, because forgiveness is not easy. We see in the cross of Jesus the difficulty of forgiveness, and whenever we forgive something in us has to die in order for that forgiveness and new life to happen. Forgiveness is not easy, but it is needed, for restoration, for resurrection, for healing and new life. And we are ambassadors of Christ in his extravagant gift of healing through forgiveness. So I leave us with this prayer from Archbishop Tutu, called “The Prayer Before the Prayer.” I want to be willing to forgive But I dare not ask for the will to forgive In case you give it to me And I am not yet ready I am not yet ready for my heart to soften I am not yet ready to be vulnerable again Not yet ready to see that there is humanity in my tormentor’s eyes Or that the one who hurt me may also have cried I am not yet ready for the journey I am not yet interested in the path I am at the prayer before the prayer of forgiveness Grant me the will to want to forgive Grant it to me not yet but soon. Can I even form the words Forgive me? Dare I even look? Do I dare to see the hurt I have caused? I can glimpse all the shattered pieces of that fragile thing That soul trying to rise on the broken wings of hope But only out of the corner of my eye I am afraid of it And if I am afraid to see How can I not be afraid to say Forgive me? Is there a place where we can meet? You and me The place in the middle The no man’s land Where we straddle the lines Where you are right And I am right too And both of us are wrong and wronged Can we meet there? And look for the place where the path begins The path that ends when we forgive. Amen.

With Special Guest Shawne Duperonof Project ForgiveHow does the mother whose husband and daughter were gunned down by terrorists forgive the men that slaughtered them? How do the parents whose teenagers were killed by a drunk driver embrace the person whose selfish act robbed them of their children? And how do we forgive the multitude of wrongs and slights that we will inevitably face throughout our lives? Julie Ann's ConsciousSHIFT guest Reverend Mpho Tutu answers these questions with us - drawing from The Book of Forgiving: The Four-Fold Path for Healing Ourselves and Our World - which she wrote along with her father, Nobel Peace Prize Winner Desmond Tutu.Using real examples from their own lives and those of others around the globe, the Tutus share very personally: Desmond Tutu writing about the pain of witnessing his father’s verbal and physical abuse towards his mother as a young boy; and Mpho Tutu sharingabout the trauma of finding her housekeeper, Angela, brutally murdered in her home.No one is better placed to offer guidance and hope in a turbulent world than the former Archbishop of Cape Town. Archbishop Desmond Tutu received world-wide recognition (and the Nobel Peace Prize) for the moral and spiritual leadership he gave in opposition to South Africa’s apartheid regime. Then in the post-apartheid era, President Nelson Mandela asked him to Chair the Truth and Reconciliation Commission which helped South Africa address the crimes committed during that era without bitter recrimination. The Tutus distill those lessons and thesequence of forgiveness into The Four-Fold Path:* the importance of telling the story, * naming the hurt, * granting forgiveness, and * choosing to either renew or release the relationship that caused you pain. Mpho also will share what forgiveness is not: forgiveness is not weakness, it is not a subversion of justice and it is not forgetting what happened. And it is not easy. She also will challenge the notion that the act of forgiveness is a sign of weakness or a lofty goal only the saintly can achieve. Instead, she and her father offer scientific proof that by pardoning others we help to heal ourselves physically, emotionally and mentally. Join Julie Ann and Mpho, as Mpho shares powerful stories, practices, prayers and journaling that give us the space and time – be it days, weeks, months or even years – to arrive at the place where we can forgive others, seek forgiveness or forgive ourselves.

It can bring you a lot of joy. They practice the Ten Precepts of a novice. The third source of nutriment is volition - deepest desire of your life. What you want to do with your life? Knowing what you want to do can give you energy. Brotherhood and sisterhood creates a very deep love. What is life as a monastic like, how are decisions made, how do you practice? Why did Thay begin to take students after living in exile in the west? The need for dharma teachers across the world is great. Thay invites you to join the five year program. At approximately 38-minutes into the recording, we turn to a new topic. We have talked about the art of suffering - if we know how to suffer, we will suffer much less. The art of suffering is linked to the art of happiness. Skillfully we can create joy for ourselves and others. There are many ways to create joy and happiness. The first method is to let go, to leave behind. Letting go will give birth to joy and happiness. If you let go, happiness can come right away. What are holding onto that we think is crucial for our happiness? The practice of releasing our cows. We can practice using sitting meditation and learn to release our cows. A whole country can even be caught my a cow - our ideology. The teaching of the monk Badhya who exclaimed "Oh my happiness!" during his meditation. He was able to let go. The second way to joy and happiness is mindfulness. Mindfulness is a source of joy and a source of happiness. This is our practice. Then we have concentration - if you are very mindful, then concentration can be born. From concentration we then have insight - it can liberate us. Joy and happiness can arrive. in the teachings of the Buddha, there are five types of energies that you can generate. They can help generate joy and happiness. The first three were covered earlier - mindfulness, concentration, and insight. The other two are faith and diligence. Faith here means confidence. The other teaching on power is cutting through / letting go. The power to cut by brought requires courage and courage requires us to have insight. The second power is wisdom. The third power is the power to love, to forgive. How do we listen to a dharma talk? What is the zen way? We continue with a brief review from the exercises of mindful breathing. At 86-minutes into the recording, we turn to a teaching on the three doors of liberation - emptiness, signlessness, and aimlesslessness. We hear an explanation and teaching on each of these doors. Try the BetterListen Version of this entire retreat - click the image below When I was a young monk, I believed he did not suffer but I know now that is not true. How can you not suffer when a dear friend dies? He was not a stone, he was a human being. But he suffered much less because of his wisdom and compassion. This is a very important thing to learn. The other question that had as a young monk is why did the Buddha keep practicing after his enlightenment. I know the answer today. Happiness is impermanent just like anything else. We have to feed and nourish our happiness. What is the goodness of suffering? It can help us to understand and love. We have to learn how to make good use of suffering. Then we can suffer much less. First, we must learn how to not let the second arrow come hit us. When we have pain in our body or mind and we let it be magnified the we create more pain and suffering. The second thing to learn is how to go home and take care of our suffering. To embrace tenderly our pain. Our consciousness has two layers - store and mind. In the store, we have many seeds; mental formations. For example, anger is a mental formation. Another mental formation is mindfulness, the energy of mindfulness, and this can be used to lessen the energy of anger. Mindfulness can embrace tenderly and anger will be transformed. We can then invite you the seed of compassion. Mindfulness of compassion. The first five mental formations are called universal. They are contact, attention, feeling, perception, and volition. They are universal because they are there at any time and at any place. How do we interact and engage with these universal mental formations? The focus of the exercises of mindful breathing are body and feelings in the first eight. then, starting with the ninth we turn to the mind. The mental formations are the objects of our mind. The tenth is about gladdening the mind. We can use Right Diligence to help the negative seeds to not manifest in our mind. This is the first aspect of the practice. And if it's already manifested, this is the second aspect, we invite the negative seed to return to store. The third aspect is to let the good seeds rise. The fourth aspect is to try keeping the positive mental formation present as long as you can. We turn now to Right View - a part of the noble eightfold path. Right view is insight and enlightenment. From Right View, we can have Right Thinking, Right Speech, Right Action, Right Livelihood, and Right Diligence. Insight can come right away! Right View transcends being and non-being, no birth and no death. Interbeing can be very helpful.
