James was nice enough to open for me in Brea a couple weeks ago, and we got to know each other better on the drive there and back from LA. He comes from a staunch religious background, is married with a child on the way, and is hilarious. Lately he's become known for his spot-on impressions, especially of the guy who most recently lost the presidential election. When James opened for me he did that impression and went off on a rant about Star Trek that killed so hard I went, “Hoo boy, now I REALLY gotta be funny tonight.” It gave me an idea: Have James on the pod, but ask him to not only give advice as himself……. Yep. You get it. THE CALLS: 1) A artist can't stop hoarding art he maybe should get rid of…. Like paintings of ex-girlfriends. HELP! (Bobby Flay), 2) A fella is in love with his best friend who doesn't feel the same way. Again, WHAT TO DO? (Louis CK) 3) An incredibly horny man jacks off several times a day. How to talk to a girl? (Donald Trump. WHO ELSE?!). Listen, learn, and enjoy, Mightys! Also, come see me on tour starting Aug. 19th: mattbraunger.com/tour for dates. Episode 325 – I used to drink at people when I was upset and those were bad nights.  I believed alcohol calmed me down and got me out of the anger.    Gillian took her last drink on November 9, 2019.  She is from Boston and loves playing video games.   This is her journey of living alcohol free (AF).   https://www.getgruvi.com/  discount code:  recoveryelevator   Finding Your Better You – Odette’s weekly message.   Odette has been thinking about death.  She has anxiety about dying.  She read a chapter in the Untethered Soul.  The author, Michael A. Singer said having an active relationship with death is healthy.   “It is truly a great cosmic paradox that one of the best teachers in all of life turns out to be death.  No  person or situation could teach as much as death has to teach you.  While someone could tell you, you are not your body, death shows you.  While someone could remind you of the insignificance of the things that you cling to, death takes them away in a second. Death makes us all the same.”  Keeping death at the forefront of our mind helps us stay in the moment.  We can stop focusing on the future or dwelling on the past and appreciate every moment.    Full presence with her children gives Odette great joy.  In the moment, Odette is learning to appreciate what she has.  She knows we can avoid thinking about death, but it’s inevitable.    When we choose sobriety, we remove a huge block that prevents us from being in the moment.  Odette still has other blocks, yet she is motivated to stay sober by those moments when she can understand what being fully present is.  The more time she spends away from alcohol, the more presence is available to her.  Value what you have, honor where you are and be grateful!   [10:25]  Odette introduces Gillian   Gillian took her last drink on November 9, 2019.  She lives in Boston,  she is a biochemist and for fun she reads, plays video games and hangs out with her husband and kitty.    [11:29] Tell us about your history with drinking?   Gillian started drinking at age 22.  She was a late comer to drinking.  She had a glass of wine at 18 and had such intense shame about drinking.  She drank more in grad school and started with Bud Lite, and her drinking quickly escalated.  She was frequently sick and within a year she was a daily drinker.  Her tolerance doubled.  She tried to moderate for five years.  Eventually, she realized moderation would not work.   [13:27]   Tell me more about the shame your experienced with your first drink?   Gillian is a rule follower.  She had trouble liking who she was.  She didn’t like or accept her body.  At 18 she was feeling shame about food she ate.  It was a difficult time in her life.    [14:39] Tell me more about your moderation attempts.   Before Gillian was a scientist, she was a teacher and she used alcohol as her fuel.  She learned that when you drink, the stress goes away, and you feel better.  She switched to Vodka and made cosmos daily.  She knew she was drinking too much.  She used a rubber band for the number of drinks, had her husband pour drinks, she bought strong wine, bought weak wine.  She ended several friendships because she thought she was drinking too much with them.  In her journal her goal was to limit to 25 drinks a week.  She abandoned that quickly.    [17:18] Why were you so firm on making moderation work?   Gillian said she couldn’t imagine a life without alcohol.  She thought it would be the death of fun.  All her friends drank. It was fundamental to her socializing.  She continued to try moderation.  She went to a therapist and was told she wasn’t an alcoholic.   [18:58] Did your husband know you were struggling?   Gillian said she talked with her husband a lot about her moderation attempts.  He knew they were well thought out.  He loved her and wanted to support her but felt uncomfortable saying she should quit.    [20:48] How is your relationship now that you have been sober for over a year?   Gillian said her relationship is much better.  They were having a lot of issues before she quit.  She says it’s like they are dating again.  They talk about their lives and their thoughts.  They connect so much better.  Her husband is a normal drinker.   [22:45] What made you decide to quit?   Gillian said her mental health declined for the last four years of her drinking.  She developed anxiety and was up all night with panic attacks.  She continued drinking and eventually she developed suicidal thoughts, which scared her.  She challenged herself to not drink for 90 days.  She did the 90 days and on day 91, she got drunk.  She drank for a few more months and the suicidal thoughts and anxiety returned.  She quit for good in November because she was afraid, she might act on her thoughts.   [25:42]  You had good insights about the outcome of continued drinking.  Does that ring a bell?   Gillian said she believed people would label her as a loser, a weak person.  She wanted to go to parties and wineries and did not want to be the only one who wasn’t drinking.   Anger has been her biggest struggle.  She would get overcome with rage.  She was mad at her husband and family.  She has processed the anger, and no longer has rage attacks.    Gillian said she drank at people when she was upset.  She believed alcohol calmed her down and helped her deal with the anger.  It was exactly opposite.   [28:37] 15 months in has your motivation shifted?   Gillian said she uses data.  She knows if she returns to drinking, anxiety and suicidal ideation will return.  All the gains she has made in sobriety would disappear if she returned to drinking.  A recent quote she likes is, “Addiction is giving up everything for one thing.  Recovery is giving up one thing for everything.”   [30:45] Did anything happen on November 9 that was different?   Gillian said it was the 11-year anniversary of a traumatic event.  She started the day with a boozy brunch, then bought a bottle of wine, then another and by 6 pm she was destroyed.  She made the decision to quit at 5:30 in the morning.  She felt calm when she made that resolve and she celebrates the 9th, not the 10th.    [32:46] How did you celebrate your one-year?   Gillian and her husband went to an Airbnb in Maine with a cool hot tub.  They had a great time, talked a lot, and made new memories.   [33:59] How were the first thirty days for you?   Gillian said quitting at the start of the holiday season was difficult.  She went to lots of parties sober.  She was the only one not drinking.  She doesn’t have cravings because her acceptance is so strong.  She struggles with people questioning her drinking.  She made new friends who were not big drinkers.  She did experience a lot of night sweats.    [37:53] Did you feel strong after the holiday season?   Gillian said it gave her lots of confidence.  She feels like a pro now.  There were a few times she cried.  The pride has rushed in and she started going to Starbucks to treat herself when other partygoers were getting drunk or weird.  She has set lots of boundaries in sobriety which feels good.  She now respects herself.  She deserves people who care about her and want the best for her.   [40:03] When did your career shift happen?   Gillian said that during a moderation attempt, she realized teaching was too stressful.  When she moved over to science, it was a good shift with the goal of being able to moderate her drinking.    [41:32] What happens when you have challenges in life?    Gillian now bakes cookies.  The act of baking helps her calm down.  Her husband is incredibly supportive.  Playing video games and therapy help. Seeing others drink wine can be triggering.  She feels jealous.  Her company sent wine as gifts, but she was able to avoid those gifts.    [43:39]  How vocal are you at work about being alcohol free?   Gillian doesn’t tell people about her sobriety.  She was able to avoid the wine deliveries by telling someone who was part of the fun committee.  She was able to request an alcohol-free alternative.  She has given feedback that mocktails should be included at work cocktail parties.  She has given feedback without “outing” herself.  A wine delivery could be disastrous for someone in early sobriety, so she is courageous about giving feedback.    [46:50] Tell me about your anxiety?   Gillian said the anxiety is completely gone.    [47:33] What about sleep?   Gillian said she sleeps like a teenager.  She was so sleep deprived at the end of her drinking.  Sleep is now great, and it still surprises her how good it feels.  It took a few months to get out of the disrupted sleep cycle.  She feels amazing now.    [49:02] How has your body image changed?   Gillian said she has always struggled with body image.  In May, she realized she was looking good.  Now she can look in the mirror and likes what she sees.  It has been an unexpected perk of sobriety.    [51:26] Rapid Fire Round   What would you say to your younger self? It’s okay, you are doing fine.   What is your favorite ice cream flavor? Coffee Oreo.   What has been a lightbulb moment for you in this journey? I realize my story is not unique to me.  It’s good to not be special.  I am not alone.  It was good to know that others had similar experience.   What parting piece of guidance would you give to listeners who are considering ditching the booze?   If you are worrying that you might have a problem, you know deep down that you do.  It’s ok that you do.  Its better on the other side.   You may have to say Adios to booze if … You are obsessing about moderation every single day and you spend most of your time thinking about your drinking.   Odette’s Summary   One of our team members, Alan Copeland wrote a poem he is going to share with you today.    Connection is The Key   For so long I was looking for the key that would open the door to a better life, a new life. One that wasn’t spiraling into oblivion.     A dark abyss of anxiety, depression, self-loathing, and fear. The bottom was as far as I could keep falling - no rope to grab - no hand to grasp.     A true free fall with gravity doing what gravity does.  A downward spiral.   Where is that key?  What’s on the other side of that door? Will I ever find what it’s like to be free from this room that’s closing in on me?     Can I buy the key?     That’s it….I’ll buy it!     Wait...where do I buy it?     Amazon?     Apple? Is there an App?     Google will tell me, right?     Or how about I make the key!  Yeah….I’ll make it to fit the door. I really can do this alone.   Wait….how will I make a key when I can’t even find the door!?   I was all alone and to feel truly alone is paralyzing.    Being alone in addiction and pending sobriety is a fear that I’ve never experienced before.  Please, please...someone help me find the key.   I never found that key.   Luckily, it found me. And finally, I opened the door. The door to a better life, a new life.   Connection is the key.   To say I’m grateful for connection doesn’t give it the credit it deserves.   The key was with a group of individuals that I had never met, never would have met and in many cases - still haven't met.      Connection is the key.   True connection is something I had never defined or thought about.     When you can share experiences, challenges and growth with another person that is also battling the raging bitch of addiction...well...that’s a connection that’s hard to put into words.     I have now experienced true connection. The ability to tell a person, “I see you”, “I hear you”,  “I understand you” and “you are loved”.     Connection is the key.     The key to learning who I am….who I REALLY am.    It’s not easy, but when you have someone to lean on, someone who catches you when you fall, someone who “feels the feels” with you, cries with you and the best of all...laughs with you. Authentic self to authentic self. We realize - we can’t do this alone.   Connection is the key.     Connection is powerful.     Connection is the opposite of addiction.     Have you found the key yet?  If not...don’t look now….it might have just found, you.   Remember that you are not alone and together is always better.  Connection is the key.  We can do this. Welcome to Mysteries to Die For. I am TG Wolff and am here with Jack, my piano player and producer. This is a podcast where we combine storytelling with original music to put you at the heart of mystery, murder, and mayhem. Some episodes will be my own stories, others will be classics that helped shape the mystery genre we know today. These are arrangements, which means instead of word-for-word readings, you get a performance meant to be heard. Jack and I perform these live, front to back, no breaks, no fakes, no retakes (unless it's really bad) This is Season 2. This season contains adaptations of stories published in the 1800s. These stories are some of the first considered to be mysteries. For that reason, this season is called The Originators. Today’s story is about greed, blindness and loyalty. This is the Episode 7 In Plain Sight, an adaptation of A Strange Disappearance by Anna Katherine Green. Tina: Anna Katherine Green’s second book in the Mr. Gryce series was published in 1880 and set in New York City. The version I read had the Blake mansion on corner property facing Second Avenue. The cross street was not specified. Google dropped the pin near East 65th Street, so we’re going with it. The Blake Mansion is a mere 6 ½ hours from the Royal Observatory in England with non-stop flights between JFK and Heathrow. You can get between Second Avenue and Senatobia, Mississippi, the location of our second episode, in about 5 hours flying to Memphis and taking the short drive south. Drive the entire way and it’s 17 hours. It takes about the same amount of time to get to Hannibal, Missouri, where Huck Finn and Tom Sawyer started out from.  This story is set in winter. There isn’t any mention of holidays or the new year, which makes me think we are in February. New York gains an hour of daylight over the short month. Sun rise is between 7am and 6:30am. Sunset is between 5:15pm and 5:45pm. The original story, A Strange Disappearance, has 346 reviews and ratings on Good Reads with an average of 3.46. 45% rated it a 3, 30% a 4. Here are a few reviews.  Five-star review: I REALLY, REALLY LIKE THIS AUTHOR!!! Yet another story that had me on the edge of my seat, turning the pages, and reveling in the twists and turns come up at the end! LOVED this book!! Well done Anna Green!! Excerpt from a three-star review: I was a little bit disappointed by this after enjoying The Leavenworth Case so much. A K Green is hailed as the Mother of Modern Crime Fiction but it didn't take me long to work out what was going on here. Added to this, I was disappointed to find that Police Inspector Ebenezer Gryce (the Sherlock Holmes of his time) hardly appeared, leaving the detective work to his assistant, Q. And the main female character was so wishy-washy, unassuming and saintly that I wanted to shake her - but I do appreciate that I was looking at her not with an 1880s glance but with 21st Century eyes.   Jack: Anna Katherine Green was an American novelist and, by many accounts, is the mother of mystery. Her first Mr. Gryce novel, the Leavenworth Case, published in 1878, was the first legal thriller and brought her the most fame. Over her 45 year career, she published over 36 novels and also wrote poetry. Michael Mallory profiled her in Mystery Scene magazine. A link to the article is in the show notes.  Anna was born in Brooklyn, NY and was the daughter of a prominent lawyer. She graduated from Ripley Female College (now Green Mountain College) in Poultney, Vermont, in 1866. This was at a time when it was still rare for women to go to college. Anna learned something about law from her father and used it to create Mr. Gryce, her detective, and the cases he solved. Her books were cutting edge for their plots and their incorporation of realistic legal circumstances. A number of sources thought Anna’s work hasn’t had the lasting power of Poe and Collins (two other authors we featured this season) because she... Support this podcast

That noise….It’s stamped into all of our brains….For those that need a refresher….Remember when every single click was calculated in MINUTES?I remember literally ONLY clicking on webpages that I knew DIDN’T have too many IMAGES on them… otherwise it simply WOUDN’T LOAD!Crazy…But you know what struck me today, right between the eyes? That was the internet, LITERALLY 10-12 years ago.Think about that for a split second. Try to transport yourself back 10 years….And now try to imagine something like UBER…..Remember, you are 10 years in the past. Your internet connection is NOT fast…Fast isn’t even in it’s vocabulary. Now, try to imagine a car…Connected to millions of other cars…That is connected to BILLIONS of people…Through devices that fit in our pockets….That track our location instantly…Perform thousands of calculations instantly…And deliver a car to us, in under 5 minutes, no matter where we are in the World….Just honestly put yourself in your old shoes…And ask yourself…Would I ACTUALLY have been ABLE to imagine that? The answer is, OF COURSE YOU WOULDN’T!Your frame of reference was SO FAR OFF from the exponentially different future, that you LITERALLY couldn’t have conceived of such a thing…Yet here we are….Using it…..There are dozens if not THOUSANDS of examples…..NetflixThe Amazon AlexaZoomFacetimeYou get the idea…..What I want to propose to you today is this….This rate of change is SPEEDING UP… NOT slowing down..It’s exponential….What I’m saying is that 10 years from now, the World will look MORE different from TODAY, than 10 years ago looked from today…Does that make sense?OF COURSE IT DOESN’T! BECAUSE EXPONENTIAL THINGS DON’T MAKE SENSE TO HUMANS! Don’t believe me?Let me ask you this….If you fold a paper in on itself 50 times, how FAR does that paper reach???Most people will say 2 inches…Want to know the correct answer?IT REACHES TO THE FREAKING SUN….Google it if you don’t believe me…I stole that analogy wholeheartedly from my number 1 book recommendation, Jeff Booth’s “THE PRICE OF TOMORROW”.Here’s the link, if you haven’t read it, you are literally missing out WOW it’s bad ->https://www.amazon.com/Price-Tomorrow-Deflation-Abundant-Future/dp/1999257405Jeff is also doing a long form podcast series on the “What is Money” show, which inspired this letter -> https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-booth-series-episode-1-inflation-opposes-innovation/id1541404400?i=1000517851753I just wanted to remind all you loyal readers today that most people have ZERO idea about the future. They don’t even understand the basic concept that technology is moving SO MUCH FASTER THAN WE CAN COMPREHEND….And its compounding affects will in turn affect our lives, SO MUCH MORE THAN WE CAN COMPREHEND.This might sound dumb, but I think of it like this…Person #1 (99.9% of humanity) - Never seriously thinks about technology, has no concept of what exponentials even are, much less their implications…Person #2 - (.0001% of humanity) - still can’t FULLY grasp the changes ahead, otherwise we’d all be billionaires. However, they are actively fighting to LEARN these concepts and use this knowledge to predict future outcomes.Which group do you want to be in?If you answered that question about the sun above incorrectly….(and let’s be honest, we ALL did the first time…)Then you need to realize, right here right now, that THAT is the same way the future looks to us…Our understanding of the way technology will affect us is so far off that it hurts me a little bit inside….So, the ONLY thing we can do is to educate ourselves. To be ahead of the curve. And to think about these concepts more deeply.I REALLY encourage each and every one of you to read that book and maybe check out the podcast as well…I truly think about the stuff talked about in them DAILY, if not HOURLY.I think it is going to give me a MASSIVE edge when it comes to investing and entrepreneurship going forward, simply because most people aren’t even THINKING about these concepts, much less UNDERSTANDING THEM.See you all tomorrow, if this helped you, plz consider subscribing…KaleAbout the Author: Kale Abrahamson has done over $50,000,000 in online E-Commerce Sales and has been featured in Forbes, Business Insider, ESPN, & Home Business Magazine. 3 roles YOU play in dismantling diet culture Welcome to this week’s episode of How to Love Your Body We are talking about YOUR role in dismantling diet culture. We all wish diet culture would not be here. We might feel like a victim of it, fair enough. It’s inhumane, it’s unfair, it’s harmful.   People are working hard to dismantle it - through legislation, through education, through activism…. But do we just sit around and wait for the world to change? That doesn’t feel very empowered. So what can WE do to begin dismantling diet culture in small ways in real life?   Show up as you are. Something we see a lot of in The UnDiet Collective and in our own personal situations is a real fear of showing up and being seen in a way that goes against diet culture. For instance today I did some instagram stories and as per usual I was walking and was holding the phone kind of low and talking, not a very nice angle. When I look at those stories before posting them I thought, I do not like the way that looks. Initial thoughts include - if ppl see that that I haven’t seen in a while they’ll really think I’ve changed, they won’t know what I REALLY look like. Fears of not fitting into the world that diet culture built for us while ALSO wanting to dismantle diet culture. Well that makes no sense! The only logical move is to ALWAYS post it anyways, show up anyways. If you want to have permission to show up as you are with no apologies you need to BE the person who shows up as they are with no apologies, no one else is going to do it.    2.  Allow others to show up as they are   Every time you wear the bathing suit you actually want to wear (even if it makes you nervous) you give permission to others to do the same.  This is a ripple effect that is so powerful and really important. Imagine 100 people who listen to this podcast episode show up to see their friends post pandemic (in many places, not where I live sadly, everything has closed down again), with zero apologies, no need for an explanation or “excuse”. Just, Hi it’s great to see you! Then everyone of those people shows 5 others that it’s ok to just show up as you are, there’s 600 people now feeling more free and so on. You CAN make a big difference even just be showing up without apologies or “explanations”.   3. Share your views publicly   No you don’t need to preach to everyone you meet how they shouldn’t diet, that won’t be very helpful BUT you can share an insta post publicly (even if you worry that a couple friends might argue with it -- NOTE: You do not need to engage with everyone’s opinion, you can just say, that hasn’t been my experience). Sharing UnDiet resources can plant a seed in people that turns into questioning and shifting their beliefs later on.  For instance, share this podcast episode right now! It will help the message get farther so we can change the world one person at a time. PS - If you also want UnDieting messaging to get farther please rate and review the podcast as this lets more people see it!   Thank you!

As I sit here, days away from an epic milestone of being married for 20 years, I have to pinch myself. I am the luckiest girl in the world to be married to Chris Brooker. After being married for 20 years, people ask me all the time how we "make it work" or "what's your secret" and I usually just give the same response: respect, laughter and a lot prayer.  We love each other very much but as we've learned over our 20+ year relationship, love alone isn't enough. Chris and Heather Brooker at Rancho Bernardo Inn. You have to add respect to that. Ultimately, as cheesy as it sounds, Chris is my best friend. He knows how I feel about everything, and then how I REALLY feel about everything. He knows my heart, good and bad and all the mistakes I've made, and loves me anyway. And less you think I'm putting him on a pedestal, he'll be the first to tell you I also know how he REALLY feels about everything, good and bad. We are symbiotic about our goals, and values. All of that being said, we don't agree on everything. We have lively debates, get annoyed with each other, and frustrated just like everyone else. But the one thing that remains, is our respect. You wouldn't treat your best friend with disrespect so why would you do that with your spouse? We also are humble enough to know when we need to apologize. I have no problem telling Chris I'm sorry if I've hurt his feelings and he feels the same way. Chris and Heather Brooker at Rancho Bernardo Inn. We are as in love as we were 20 years ago, but it's a deeper, more mature love. And I can't wait to honor our commitment to each other on a beach in Maui. We're planning an intimate vow renewal on the beach and I will probably cry like a baby. But to be fair, so will Chris. Channing is going to be our flower girl and she is so excited! Make sure you follow along on my Instagram and TikTok to see all of the adventures we have planned. We are staying at the newly renovated Westin Maui Resort and Spa and I can't wait to show you all around this beautiful property. We also breakdown the 2021 Oscar nominees and why we think ratings are declining. Tell us if you agree! Don't forget to subscribe to my podcast and leave a review!

Guys and Gals, Bad news for you today. The “experts” are wrong. Ever heard this quote?I’m calling BS on that…..I think this is awful advice and makes people broke, unhappy, and wondering if something is wrong with them…..Here’s the truth. We all want the same thing.I think I’m in a good position to speak to the truth of this. For the past 3 years, I’ve worked with 20,000+ entrepreneurs, who all want to start or scale their online businesses. Yes, 20,000.Want to know what they ALL want?Literally every single one of them?Freedom.Time freedom. Choice freedom. “Do what I want when I want” freedom. That’s what people really want. The money? Just a means to an end.So, if we all want the exact same thing, and a business or job is just a VEHICLE to get us there…. why are we worried about what vehicle it is?Let me put it another way….Path #1 - You drive in a Rolls Royce Ghost for 10 years, and end up at your freedom destination. Path #2 - You drive in a beat up 1950’s Honda Civic for 2 years, and end up at your freedom destination.Read those again if you missed the difference. Are you willing to give up 8 years just to get to the same destination “in style?”At the end of the day, you’re still stuck in a car!!!That’s how I feel most people are operating though. They are more concerned with their current pain points in their current job or business, than they are with actually getting to the destination.I’ve literally seen people start a business centered around a product that made them feel more “comfortable” that was BLACK AND WHITE less profitable than another product, and GUARANTEED to slow down their journey to success, THOUSANDS of times. It’s extremely common, and I wish it wasn’t. Here’s the REAL issue with it.I’m all about enjoying what you do, but the problem is, you always end up hating it anyway, because it’s NOT the final destination and EVERY JOB eventually wears on you.I loved basketball more than pretty much anything. I was great at it. But then it turned into a job. And I ended up hating it.Now, I love coaching Entrepreneurs and helping them become successful. But if I’m totally honest with you guys?I’ve still hated it at times. It’s still a job… a means to the true end that is FREEDOM and not HAVING to work if you don’t want to.Honestly, I can speak to that as well.I REALLY started to hate my company and work in general at the times when I had NO CHOICE.I HAD to keep running it.Keep scaling it.Keep growing it.Just to put food on the table.THAT SUCKED. Because I didn’t have a choice. In fact, as a psychology major I can tell you one thing, humans are MOST miserable when they feel they have no choice. There’s this famous experiment where they literally sit people in a chair and shock them. One group gets a button (that does nothing but they don’t know that). They are told, if you press the button you can lessen the intensity of the shock. The other group gets nothing and just has to sit there and get shocked.Guess who experienced EXTREMELY higher levels of pain and anxiety? You guessed it, the ones who had NO CHOICE, no CONTROL over the situation.Want to know when my companies became FUN again? Was it when I molded them into my “perfect lifestyle so I’d never have to work again because I loved it so much? (que the butterflies and rainbows)”… NO.It was when money became non important to the equation.Once I had enough money to realistically retire whenever I wanted, instantly all the stress changed for me.I knew I COULD just stop and go to my eventual freedom destination RIGHT NOW if I wanted to.And that POSSIBILITY ALONE has cleared my mind unlike any “lifestyle planning” or “doing what you love” seminar ever could….So what can you take away from this?Stop acting like your job is supposed to fulfill you. It’s not. It never will. Entrepreneurs, same thing. Your business is not God. It doesn’t complete you.Everyone, including you, no matter how much you lie to yourself, wants the SAME THING. FREEDOM. So take the quickest route to actually achieve that freedom.IMPORTANT: That route might not be easy. Deal with it. It’s better to fight tooth and nail for a short period and achieve what you actually set out to achieve in the first place.Subscribe dang it! This letter is ridiculous. Also share it with someone! 54. Hey sweet friend! Recently my husband was out of town for a week and things got really real over here. The Holy Spirit swept in with a few eye-opening whispers (when I REALLY needed to hear them… in His true, perfect timing) and the reminder that… I am a beloved Kingdom daughter. You are too, Sis! I don't know what's going on in your life right now. Maybe things are smooth sailing and you're currently on the “mountain top.” If so, that's great! But maybe that's not the case. Maybe life is feeling chaotic and stressful and busy. Or maybe you feel unappreciated or unloved in this season of your life. Or maybe you straight up feel like you're in a valley right now, like things are hard… like you're being crushed and refined.  I have a powerful truth for you, sister… You are seen. You are loved. You are a daughter of the Good Father.  Isaiah 54:10 says “Though the mountains move and the hills shake, my love will not be removed from you and my covenant of peace will not be shaken,” says your compassionate Lord. So good, right? Let's rest in God's truth and wisdom and goodness and peace and love today with a short, guided meditation today.  This is a REALLY special podcast episode, Sis. The Kale Letter
How to Change Things When Change Is Hard

The Kale Letter

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 22, 2021 5:12

Hey everyone!Been reading an INCREDIBLE book lately. You should definitely check it out. It’s called -> “SWITCH - How to Change Things When Change Is Hard” by Chip Heath and Dan Heath.Basically there is one concept that they talk about over and over again. Imagine your brain is like an elephant, and there is a rider on top, riding the elephant. The Rider = Your Logical Brain, Your “Self-Control”.The Elephant = Your Emotional BrainThe Path = Where the elephant is walking. Now, just think about this scenario for a second. Obviously, the Elephant is a powerful force here. The rider can coax the elephant into doing what it wants, for a while, to a certain degree. “Hey buddy, go over here!” (dangles Elephant food on stick)The path also influences things to a large degree. If the elephant runs up on a giant pool of delicious water, GOOD LUCK trying to stop that elephant from drinking, rider. You get it right? The book talks about how this is EXACTLY how our brain works. I’ll just give you the secret sauce straight from the book okay?In order to change ANYTHING in your life you need to…1) Direct the Rider 2) Motivate the Elephant3) Shape the PathI’ll talk about these 3 in future letters in MUCH more detail, so make sure you are subscribed (it’s free for 30 days anyway)…But today I just want to focus on #2, Motivating the Elephant, because I think it’s one people forget ALL THE TIME.When we think about starting a business, fixing a bad habit, starting a GOOD habit, whatever, we ALWAYS think about the RIDER.At least I do!!!“Kale, just stop being a wuss, get up at 6am and workout!”“Kale, do you want to be rich or not? Film that advertisement right this instant!”That is me, screaming at my Rider to get to work…This, obviously, rarely works. The second that alarm rings at 6am, I silence it.Or, in reality, my emotional self (my “Elephant”) wants nothing more than to stay in bed, so that’s what wins out. NO AMOUNT OF PRODDING BY THE RIDER IS GOING TO CHANGE THAT.What do you have in YOUR life that this reminds you of?Now that you’re thinking of it, here’s how to fix it.Like most things in life, you need to do the OPPOSITE of what you’ve been taught in school or by the “World”.The world will tell you to be analytical, logical, “smart”.What you really need to do is MOTIVATE THAT ELEPHANT. And remember, the elephant is EMOTIONAL. The only way to motivate it is through an EMOTIONAL REACTION.So, yes, you are going to have to get emotional.Guys, I know this can seem hard and “wussy” to you. But here’s a quick hint…ANGER is an emotion….FEELING SICK TO YOUR STOMACH is an emotion….So, I can’t really diagram this out for you because each situation is different, but basically, you need to start FEELING STRONGLY about what you want to do….For example….Want to lose weight? Start really NOTICING how unhealthy people look when they are overweight. Start REALLY feeling how gross and unhealthy YOU would feel if you were in their shoes. Then use that emotion to fuel your elephant.Want to stop procrastinating on your dream? Your business? Start visualizing how bad it felt every time you couldn’t afford something. The embarrassment of your card declining. The FUTURE embarrassment of not being able to get your kids the life they deserve….As you can tell, my mind definitely goes a little DARK when I need to motivate my elephant. That’s just how I’m wired, I played D1 college basketball and nothing gets you going more than those angryish emotions… (if you don’t believe me go watch Michael Jordan’s “Last Dance” documentary on Netflix…)But that’s not how everyone is…You can do this positively as well, and honestly that’s probably a better use of this….Want to treat your wife better? Start scrolling back through your phone of all the memories you’ve had. Start dreaming of your future life and the future versions of your wife… is she happy, fulfilled, living up to her full potential because YOU were her rock? Or is she unhappy, depressed, and wishing she never would have married your sorry ass?Dang, I went negative there again, haha!Idk, take this for what it’s worth, but I REALLY found this concept interesting, and EASY to relate back to in my day to day life.Read that book if you have time, or just start to think of life in terms of the Elephant, Rider, Path concept….I guarantee it will help you make positive changes in your life.Oh, and make sure to tune in later this week (SUBSCRIBE FOR ACCESS) when I talk about SHAPING THE PATH….Sometimes you can CHEAT your way to making the elephant do what you want….Kale Get on the email list at thekaleletter.substack.com

The effect of the pandemic on cities and states.... (*hint* they are businesses too)

The Kale Letter

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 3, 2021 4:44

Open this if you aren’t easily offended by “covid stuff”…Hey everyone!Honestly, I’ve put off writing anything related to Covid because it’s one of the most divisive issues in the World and I’m almost guaranteed to piss half of you off.But I would like to discuss something very specific that I think people are underestimating.. (that holds true regardless of what you think about lockdowns)Cities and States are BUSINESSES TOO.Honestly, it kind of boggles my mind that most people don’t understand this.Technically, in order for a city or state to FUNCTION, it needs money, right?Where does it get that money? From tax revenue….Here’s where it gets really serious, and why I think certain cities will take DECADES to recover from this (if they ever recover…)20% of the population pays more taxes than the rest of the 80% combined.Honestly, it’s probably closer to the 1% rule again, which we discussed from yesterday…1% of the population pays more taxes than the rest of the 99% combined….This is just the truth, it’s how things have been for hundreds of years (if not forever). It’s why the Pareto Principle (commonly referred to as the 80/20 rule) is so deadly in this situation…Now let’s think critically about this 1% of the population… what characteristics do they have?1) Optionality. If you are a multi-millionaire, you have options, plain and simple. You can shop where you want, live where you want, and travel where you want, at the drop of a hat.2) Adaptability. It’s rare that someone generates multi-millions without being adaptive. They’ve likely crossed multiple career paths or started multiple enterprises (sometimes in different industries) before landing on success. They’ve lived and worked in more places than the average person.—-I could go on with more characteristics, but those are the only two that are necessary. I would argue that the 1%, who pay the majority of the taxes in every important city and state in the World, have EXTREME optionality and adaptability…Now, let me ask you a question…If you are treated badly at a business, ONCE, even if you are a REGULAR CUSTOMER, will you EVER go back?Of course not. At least I wouldn’t.Now, what do you think the 1%’ers would do in the same situation?Of course they won’t go back. You can argue your case for lockdowns or Covid in the comments if you want, I really don’t care. But here’s what I know…A) The “Business” of the city or state is pissing people off. They are treating their best “customers” with disdain. B) Their best “customers” don’t have to stay, and won’t stay.C) They also probably will NEVER come back.I’m not trying to make a political statement here, I’m just telling you what I’m hearing from a LOT of 1%’ers in ALL the major hubs that have been heavily locked down this entire time…New York CitySan FranciscoLos AngelesChicagoSeattleThere is a MASS exodus from those cities, and it’s not PROPORTIONAL.The rich are leaving, and my argument is that they are NOT going to go back…For instance, my wife and I have been blessed enough to work with a realtor in Miami recently.Miami is wide open, and honestly quite wonderful.People are happy, and living their lives. He isn’t even a popular realtor, far from it.But he is doing 7-10 one year leases PER DAY for people moving in from those cities I listed above…PER DAY….I realize that’s a small sample size… But you don’t have to be a genius to understand that most of those people are never going to go back….Why should they? The taxes are higher, they’ve already been burned, and that trust has been completely eroded. It’s like SAYING you’re going to go back and eat at that restaurant with that waitress who was extremely rude to you….But you NEVER ACTUALLY DO IT…..I just think it’s CRAZY how big of an effect this is going to have, and for how long….I think people are TOTALLY underestimating it….It’s not like all these rich people are broadcasting their movements…It’s not exactly the most popular topic to discuss these days…But they are moving, nonetheless…And when you consider that cities and states REALLY ARE BUSINESSES at their core…We need to ask ourselves…Will this business SURVIVE?Are my revenues too small to support my expenses? When they are… what do we cut?Maintenance of roads? The schools? The police force? The city halls and courtrooms?I don’t know guys, I’m not saying I have all the answers, and I REALLY hope I’m wrong about this…But if there was a “stock market” for cities, I would be SUPER EXTREMELY BEARISH on the outlook of those cities that have had prolonged lockdowns, and EXTREMELY BULLISH on the cities that haven’t.Because, regardless of politics and viewpoints, the money is moving. And when the money moves, things change, and change forever.Just food for thought.See you tomorrow (tenses up for the dumpster fire in the comments)Kale Get on the email list at thekaleletter.substack.com

Imagine going to the gym, never learning the proper way to lift weights, and instead just going hard, pushing yourself to lift more and more each time. You're going to get hurt, and then encounter a setback, where you lose all the gains you made. This is what I did inside of my coaching business. I wasted 6 years of my coaching career being sucked in by all of the "noise" on the internet every day. I thought marketing strategies like "building my Facebook group" were the ticket to building my coaching business. I skipped over fundamental steps and went straight for the shiny stuff. The result: I've had to start over/turn the car around about a dozen times to finally get in alignment. To finally set the business up on the proper foundation so that it gives me the gratification and lifestyle I've always craved. I REALLY wish I had watched this video/episode years ago. Oh, the time it would have saved me. Hope you enjoy (and act up on it). P.S. - I got the title of this episode from a quote by Dave Ramsey from the back of the book "Building A Storybrand" by Donald Miller (fantastic read) To see if the 6 week workshop would be a great fit for you, DM me here: http://m.me/brian.ellwood1 You're passionate about your area of expertise. You have a message you know the world needs to hear. You've tried books, online courses, 1-on-1 coaching, webinars, and paid ads even... Yet none of that has really worked to create a predictable stream of revenue for your coaching business. You're also bogged down in fulfillment by working with too many 1-on-1 clients... Sometimes your clients even drain your energy! Is something wrong with you? Actually, no. The problem is with your business. It's not built on the proper foundations, using the correct offer, or delivery model. If you want to talk about some simple shifts to completely fix that (and create the coaching biz you dream about).... Book a call with our team and let's build you an action plan that will WORK. You are one decision away from a completely different life. Let that sink in for a minute. One single decision can change everything. But it can change FAST. This week, I tell my personal story of how my life, my body, my mind, and my business have dramatically changed for the better in just 75 short days... all because of one decision. We all have goals and dreams, and things we want to improve. You want to sell more homes, increase your income from each home sold, lose weight, increase natural energy, get tougher mentally, improve your relationship with your spouse or your kids. But how much progress can you really make in a few months? In my case, quite a lot. After completing the 75 Hard challenge, which is 75 days long, I made a huge physical transformation. I lost 17 pounds, burned off a ton of body fat, gained a ton of strength and muscle, and got my six pack back that I haven't seen since high school :) But where I REALLY saw massive improvement? My confidence, discipline, and mental toughness... and the relationship between my wife and I. Absolutely massive improvements in just 75 short days. This week I explain the program that I followed, how I did what I did, and how you can do it too. Realtors, pay attention. Have you ever bought a whiteboard or a journal and thought, this is it... This is the moment when I REALLY commit to goal-setting... and then (as it tends to do) life just kind of gets in the way? This episode is about rethinking your approach to goals – and to do this, we've brought in an expert on managing your time and mental energy like a billionaire: Geoff Woods, VP of The One Thing and facilitator of their upcoming virtual goal-setting retreatToday, Geoff shares the blueprint that high-performing couples, teams, and individuals use 1) cast a shared vision of the future 2) work backwards to map out important steps, and 3) regularly recalibrate and track progress. Plus, we put this to the test, live!About halfway through the episode, you'll meet Matt and Melissa Miller – married parents of 3 who own 7 units but are struggling to define their exact vision... and the action plan required to realize it. Geoff leads them through a goal-setting exercise live, and the result is inspiring and surprisingly emotional. #MarriageGoals - literally!Whether you're looking to get on the same page as a spouse, business partner, or just chart out a clearer path for yourself... you'll get a ton of value out of this episode.
