Tom welcomes back the dynamic charting duo Patrick Karim and Kevin Wadsworth. They discuss how we are starting to see a potential breakout for gold as it touches multiple points while building out a new trend line. On the monthly chart, we have nearly had a confirmed breakout. If this month closes around the current level, it will confirm a monthly breakout. We need to see capital flows move into gold, which you can spot with ratios like gold to the SPX. It doesn't take much capital rotation for gold to breakout. The gold charts display evidence of being far away from their natural position and there is a build up of latent investment energy that could easily be explosive. Patrick explains how Ichimoku clouds work in technical analysis by measuring market strength over time. Markets can break through when clouds are narrow, and you should treat these, along with other indicators like moving averages. Many of their charts point to a high point in metals markets towards the end of the 2020s. It is important to consistently question your analysis as new information arrives and compare past bull markets to see where things may head in the coming years. They provide a demo live analysis for determining the strength and entry point for a market. Initial breakouts are often not the move you are waiting for, as markets take time to establish a base and wash out the bag holders. They analyze the Dollar Index Milkshake theory to measure the potential weight of evidence. Gold tracks purchasing power more than the dollar index. Much dollar demand comes from overseas, and this may be gradually changing. Over the years, his career has involved everything from briefing pilots to producing commercial advice to utility companies and providing TV and radio broadcasts. His current role is as a Civil Contingency Advisor consists of linking with the emergency response community. He gives advance notice of life-threatening weather events and advice during events influenced by the weather, such as wildfires and industrial accidents. The science behind weather forecasting aims to unlock methods and techniques for predicting the future with ever-increasing accuracy. A friend and colleague helped spark an interest in the global economy and the financial world in the early 2000s. The financial crash of 2008 got Kevin hooked, and he gradually became aware of the similarities between forecasting the future weather and forecasting future price movements in the financial markets. Around that time, he read an abridged version of Strauss and Howes 'The Fourth Turning', which intrigued him. The cyclical nature of markets mirrors the cyclical nature of the weather and seasons. The process of gathering evidence via multiple computer models that assess the likelihood of all possible future outcomes works just as well for predicting the future price of gold for indicating whether it's likely to rain on the weekend or not. His focus is on tuning out all the noise and presenting clear and uncluttered charts while gathering all the evidence. Kevin tries to have no bias, but instead follows the weight of evidence. He says, I'm not a bull or a bear; I'm simply presenting the evidence as I see it. Patrick Karim is a proprietary capital manager and chart trader since 2006.
In this video we are going to create buy and sell signals and code a standalone version that is able to calculate this one line from the Ichimoku Kinko Hyo, it's called a Tenkan-sen, that's the red line here. Now we want to find out how to do that in MQL5? To do that please click on the little icon here or press F4 on your keyboard now you should see the Metaeditor window and here you want to click on: ”File/ New/ Expert Advisor (template)” from template, “ Continue”, I will call this file: “SimpleTenkansenStandaloneEA”, click on “Continue”, “Continue” and “Finish”. Now you can delete everything above the “OnTick” function and the two comment lines here. We start with the “include” statement to include the file “Trade.mqh”, that comes with MQL5 and we need it to create an instance of “CTrade” that will be called: “trade” and we will use it to open and close positions later on. We start by calculating the Ask price and the Bid price, this is done by using “SymbolInfoDouble” for the current symbol on the chart, we use “SYMBOL_ASK” to calculate the Ask price and “SYMBOL_BID” to calculate the Bid price. “NormalizeDouble” and “_Digits” will automatically calculate the right number of digits behind the dot. Next we need to create a signal variable for the signal that also will be called: “signal” and we don’t assign a value here. We use “MqlRates” to create a price array called: “PriceInformation”, that one will contain the prices of the candles, we use “ArraySetAsSeries” to sort the array (PriceInformation) from the current candle downwards and with “CopyRates” we fill the price array (PriceInformation) with data for the current symbol on the chart and the currently selected period on the chart. We start from the candle 0 (zero) and copy the price information for 3 candles into our price array (PriceInformation). For the Tenkan-sen we need to create another array and we use the MQL5 function: “iIchimoku”, this one can calculate the Tenkan-sen, the Kijun-sen, the Senkou Span depending on the index buffer that we use, buffer 0 (zero) is for the Tenkan-sen, buffer 1 is for the Kijun-sen and so on. For the parameters we use the current symbol, the currently selected period on the chart, here we have three more values; 9, 26 and 52 and when we click on: “Insert/ Indicators/ Trend/ Ichimoku Kinko Hyo” we will see the same values here so that's how we use them. 9 is for the Tenkan-sen, 26 is for the Kijun-sen and 52 is for the Senkou Span B. In our example we only calculate one of them; that's the Tenkan-sen, so let's use “ArraySetAsSeries” to sort our Tenkan-sen array (TenkansenArray) from the current candle downwards and with “CopyBuffer” we fill our Tenkan-sen array (TenkansenArray) according to the Ichimoku definition (IchimokuDefinition) that we have created here for buffer 0 (zero), we start with the current candle 0 (zero) and we use the data for 3 candles. Now we can calculate the Tenkan-sen value (TenkansenValue) by looking at candle 0 (zero) in our “TenkansenArray”. For our simplified example we would say that whenever the value is above, so the “ThenkansenValue” would be greater than the close price for candle 1 in our “PriceInformation” array, we would consider that to be a sell signal and so we assign the word: “sell” to or signal. In the other case if the “TenkansenValue” is below the “PriceInformation” close price for candle 1 we would consider that to be a buy signal and now we would assign the word: “buy” to our signal. And when the signal equals sell and we have no open positions that's when we would use “trade.Sell” to sell 10 micro lot, otherwise if the signal equals buy and we have no open positions we would use: “trade.Buy” and buy 10 micro lot. We finish by creating a chart output using the “Comment” function to output the text: “The current signal is:” followed by the calculated “signal”. Now this is only one of several values that you could calculate for this Indicator, you can spend hours to learn how to read it and there are also several interpretations but in our simplified case we just go with the red line here so when you are done you can click on the “Compile” button or press F7, that should work without any errors here and if this is the case please click here or press F4 to go back to Metatrader. When inside of Metatrader we click on; “View/ Strategy Tester” or press CTRL and R, here we select the: “SimpleTenkansenStandaloneEA.ex5”, please enable the visualization option and start your test. …and here we are! We have a buy signal right now and whenever the price crosses the red line that would switch to a sell signal. Now you know how to calculate the Tenkan-sen value for the Ichimoku Kinko Hyo Indicator, it's also possible to calculate all the other values here and create specific rules but now you know how to automate the Tenkan-sen and you have coded it yourself with a few lines of MQL5 code.

In this video, we are going to create an Expert Advisor that is able to calculate the values for this indicator here. This one is called Ichimoku Kinko Hyo. So let’s find out how to do that with MQL4. To get started, please click on the little icon here or press F4 on your keyboard. Now, you should see the Metaeditor window and here you want to click on file, new file, Expert Advisor from template, continue. I will call this file SimpleIchimokuKinkoHyo, now click on continue, continue and finish. Now you can delete everything above the Ontick function and the two comment lines here. We start by calculating the Tenkansen value. To do that, we use Iichi Moku. If you mark that on press F1, you will see that it takes a few parameters that we need to pass. The first one is for the current chart. That’s the symbol, the second parameter is for the time frame. So we also can use underscore, symbol and underscore period. Here we have three values and when you click on insert, indicators, custom, Ichimoku, you will see that the Tenkansen value is nine, the Kijunsen value is twenty six and the Senkuspan B value is fifty two. And that’s exactly what we are using here. The next parameter is for the value you want to calculate. If you mark that and press F1 you will see that we need to do that for five values. And the first one is Mode_Tenkansen. The last parameter here is for the number of the candle. So let’s do that for the current candle that is Candle zero. Now let’s continue with the Kijunsen value that is very similar. But this time we are going to use Mode_Kijunsen. But now comes the tricky part. Because to calculate the right value for the Senkuspan A you need to pass Mode_SenkouspanA followed by a value of minus twenty six candles. Why is that? Well, if you take a closer look, you will see that this is the current candle and this cloud here is calculated in front of the current candle. Therefore, we need to use a negative value here. And that is also true if we want to calculate the Senkouspan B value. Now, we use Mode_SenkouspanB. Again, followed by a value of minus 26 candles, and the next thing is this green line here, this is not calculated into the future, but into the past. So to calculate the Chinkouspan value, we need to use Mode_Chinkospan. And this time we are going to use a value of twenty six candles. But this is a positive value, not a negative one. If you don’t know those values, you would probably get wrong values, because you would try to calculate the values for the current candle, and that can be very confusing, especially in the beginning. Now let’s add a comment statement for the chart output that will show us the description and the values on the chart, and that’s about it. Well, if you have no idea what all the code here means or if you think that this was too fast for you, you maybe want to watch one of the other videos in the basic video series or maybe even the Premium Course on our website might be interesting for you. There we also have a link for basic video courses that contain the source codes. And this video actually was suggested by a Premium Course member. And if you are a Premium Course member and have an idea for a video like this one, please let me know. For now please click on the Compile button or F7 on your keyboard. You shouldn’t get any errors. And if that is the case, you can click on a little button here or press F4 to go back to Metatrader. And in Metatrader you want to click on insert, indicators, custom, Ichimoku, please go with the default values and click on ok. Now the indicator should appear on your chart and now you want to right click select template, save template and save it as tester.tpl. You can override the current value because tester.tpl is the template that we will see when we start the next strategy test. So now please click on View, strategy tester or press Control and R. Please pick the new file SimpleIchimokuKinkoHyo.EX4,
In this video, we are going to create an Expert Advisor that is able to calculate the values for this indicator. It is called the Ichi Moku Kinko Hyo. So let’s find out how to do that with MQL5. To get started, please click on a little button here or press F4 on your keyboard. Now you should see the Metaeditor window and here you want to click on file. New file Expert Advisor from template, continue. I will call this file simple Ichi Moku Kinko Hyo. He or click on Continue, continue and finish. Now you can delete everything above the Ontick function and the two Comment lines here, we start with an import statement that will import the file Trend.mqh. This one comes with MQL5 and it provides a few additional trend help classes. One of those classes is this one. It is called C I Ichi Moku. Here is the declaration and some additional information. We have methods that have been inherited from other classes. Here is the class hierarchy. Basically, it’s an object and we want to create an instance that is called I ichi Moku. This is actually not a mistake. Please don’t forget to use this asterisk. Now, we are going to continue with the on init function. We want to create the I ichi Moku only once that is done by using new C I ichi Moku. Here comes the actual creation. We create an instance for the current symbol on the chart and the currently selected period on that chart, followed by three values: nine, twenty six and fifty two. And you will see the same values when you click on insert indicators, trend, Ichimoku Kinko Hyo. The Tenkasen value is nine. The Kijunsen value is twenty six and the value for Sekuspan B is fifty two. And that’s exactly what we are going to use here. So now we have created our indicator object. We want to use Ichimoku.Refresh. That is one of the inherited methods from C Indicator and they say it updates the indicator data and it is recommended to call this method before we get the data. Now let’s calculate the values. The Tenkansen value is calculated by using Ichimoku.Tenkansen for candle zero. The Kijunsen value is calculated by using Ichimoku.Kijunsen for the current candle. The Senkouspan A value is calculated by using Ichimoku.Senkouspan A four minus twenty six candles. And that might look a little bit confusing. But if you take a closer look, you will see that this cloud here is calculated ahead of the current candle. Therefore we need to use this negative value here. Otherwise, it would be calculated for the current candle and that would be wrong. That can be really confusing, especially in the beginning, because you would get wrong values. Let’s continue with the Sekuspan B value. That’s basically the same. This one is also calculated for minus twenty six candles, and the last one is the Chinkospan value. To calculate this, you use Ichimoku.Chinkospan and this time we are going to use twenty six candles because this Chinkospan value is calculated for twenty six candles in the past. This episodes explain a little bit more about what exactly buy and sell zones are and how they can be used for instantaneous shifts in when the price of a stock will either move up aggressively or move down quickly depending on where it is. Almost can be thought of resistance and support zones, since they do not make up straight lines sometimes and just like clouds in the longer timeframes.

Why is Tesla stock dropping during the Coronavirus outbreak? Where will it go from here? Will its price recover once we're done with COVID-19 pandemic, or will it go back to a range as it did in the past 5 years? New to investing? Start off the right way >> Tesla is the leading autonomous vehicle player... My husband and I have been big fans and have gone through almost all Tesla models including the Model S, the Model X, and have even got a little Baby Tesla car for our 2-year-old daughter… But my Tesla stock investing approach has not reflected my enthusiasm for Tesla as a company in the past 5 years. Not that I don’t believe in the Tesla stock as a long-term hold, but that my system has shown me over and over again about how Wall Street views are on a medium-term. Me and my Premium Investors have gone in and out of TSLA multiple times, buying low and selling high and doing it over again. This has made us thousands of dollars in profit, more than we could have made just by buying and holding the Tesla stock Will Tesla reach global mass adoption? I think so… Will it be 2020? I’m doubtful. In today’s video, I’ll use my Ichimoku strategy and Fibonacci system to analyze the Tesla stock price on a medium and long-term basis.
Is this the lowest price to buy Baidu stock (Bidu)? Or could it drop even further down? Even if it drops further, is Baidu stock a good buy and investment? Today I'm using the Ichimoku cloud analysis and my Invest Diva Diamond Analysis (IDDA) to develop an investment strategy for Baidu stock 2019 and in 2020. Download Ichimoku Secrets: https://learn.investdiva.com/ichimoku... 3 Secrets To Grow $500 Into $10,573: http://learn.investdiva.com/start I look at the markets based on my signature Invest Diva Diamond Analysis (IDDA) and combine it with the Ichimoku Kinko Hyo strategy development technique including indications from the Ichimoku cloud. The IDDA looks at investment strategies from 5 points: technicals, fundamentals, sentiment, capital, and overall. About Baidu Stock (Bidu) Baidu is the largest Internet search engine in China with over 70% of mobile traffic share in the search market. The Chinses firm generates 86% of revenue from online marketing services and the rest from other segments. What gets me most excited about investing in Baidu stock is that it's a technology-driven company and has been investing in AI technology. It even invests heavily autonomously driven cars which are among the hottest of the future tech. In the near term, Baidu will invest heavily in its mobile business in terms of sales and marketing, and traffic acquisition. While meaningful monetization is uncertain, analysts expect Baidu to increase or maintain its research and development expenditure, which is at 17% of sales in the first quarter of 2019. Baidu Stock Analysis (Fundamentals) Here are some of the bullish and bearish justifications for the Baidu stock in 2020. On the positive note, Baidu sits on a cash pile of over CNY 100 billion. This gives the Chinese firm enormous powder to invest in technology, particularly in AI. It can even use its loads of cash merger and acquisition opportunities to grow even bigger. On one negative note, Baidu has many competitors in the field. Alibaba, Tencent, and other vertical Internet service providers are competing in terms of advertising budgets. The fierce competition could result in slow growth in revenue for Baidu. Bidu Stock Analysis (Ichimoku & Technical Analysis) The Baidu stock price broke above the daily Ichimoku cloud end of October 2019. Ichimoku Kinko Hyo strategy suggests we could see a temporary pullback towards the upper band of the cloud before further gains in the medium term. However, the pair has not yet completed the long-term double top bearish reversal chart pattern which suggests the Baidu stock price could drop to as low as $42. On the other hand, we also have a Saucer Bottom chart pattern forming on the daily chart. Watch my Ichimoku cloud analysis for the Baidu stock today to see how I bring all points of the IDDA together. What are your thoughts on the Baidu stock? Do you think this is the lowest price it could fall in the long-term? Would you consider buying the Baidu stock now, or if it drops lower? When to buy Bitcoin? Today I'm using the Ichimoku cloud analysis for BTC price Prediction to find out if NOW is a good time to buy Bitcoin. That is if you believe Bitcoin is the right asset to invest in and suits your unique risk tolerance. Once you've watched the video, let me know what you about the Bitcoin price forecast. Are you investing in Bitcoin? Is now a good time to buy Bitcoin? Or would you rather wait or the BTC price to drop further? Download Ichimoku Secrets: https://learn.investdiva.com/ichimoku... 3 Secrets To Grow $500 Into $10,573: http://learn.investdiva.com/start Created by a pseudonymous developer (or developers) using the pseudonym Satoshi Nakamoto, Bitcoin gave birth to the multibillion-dollar cryptocurrency industry, supported by blockchain technology and the decentralization movement. Although many projects have tried to replicate Bitcoin’s success by creating coins that are far more scalable and advanced on the technological level, Bitcoin has remained the most dominant cryptocurrency on the market. Its main use-case has been shifting, though. People started to consider it as a “store of value” (digital gold) rather than a “payment currency”. And that is primarily due to its high domination, large liquidity, and general lower volatility in relation to other cryptocurrencies. Fundamentals: There is still an ongoing debate in the space about whether Bitcoin should be considered a “medium of exchange” or a “store of value”. In its whitepaper Bitcoin was designed as a peer-to-peer version of electronic cash. The global cash market accounts for about $36.8 trillion of physical money and could increase to $90.4 trillion if we also include money held in easily accessible accounts. BTC is the native currency of Bitcoin the blockchain. Its main application within the ecosystem is to serve as a reward instrument for miners who are adding blocks to the blockchain. Miners are paid through a combination of Bitcoin’s block reward and transaction fees. According to the Simetri research, as the number one cryptocurrency, Bitcoin continues to be the driving force behind the crypto economy. Its influence over the overall market is undeniable, while its prospects for development look promising. Its ecosystem is evolving, with many projects that enhance its functionality as well as scalability. The Lightning Network alone has seen significant growth since the last year, in terms of both network capacity and merchant adoption. The interest from institutional investors also has been significant. The appearance of necessary infrastructure that will allow investment in Bitcoin through regulated and well-structured investment vehicles, will attract even more smart money into the crypto economy. Therefore it seems likely that Bitcoin can become a store of value asset, and attract institutional money into its ecosystem. This will make bitcoin even more dominant in the crypto economy and will support and stabilize its value proposition.
When to buy AMZN stock? Today I'm using the Ichimoku cloud analysis for the Amazon stock price movement (AMZN) to find out if NOW is a good time to buy AMZN. The price has just broken above the daily Ichimoku cloud. 3 Secrets To Grow $500 Into $10,573: http://learn.investdiva.com/start About Amazon Stock: Amazon is among the world's highest-grossing online retailers, with $233 billion in net sales and roughly $311 billion in estimated physical/digital gross merchandise volume in 2018. Amazon's disruption of the retail industry is well documented, but the company continues to find ways to evolve its business model. Its operational efficiency, network effect, and a brand intangible asset built on customer service provide its marketplaces with sustainable competitive advantages that few, if any, traditional retailers can match. The combination of competitive pricing, unparalleled logistics capabilities and speed, and high-level customer service makes Amazon an increasingly vital distribution channel for consumer brands. Even with more retailers looking to expand online, we believe Amazon will maintain its consumer proposition through Prime expedited shipping, an expanding digital content library, and new partnerships from its Whole Foods acquisition. Amazon is also spreading its arms in artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning as well as other valuable industries in the future which make it an interesting choice to hold long term. However, during a recession, the Amazon stock price could take a hit. Amazon Stock Ichimoku Analysis Amazon stock price broke above the daily Ichimoku cloud last week. Ichimoku Kinko Hyo strategy suggests we could see a temporary pullback towards the upper band of the cloud before further gains, which could provide an interesting buying opportunity. During a recession, Amazon's stock price forecast could be dimmer. It could go as low as key Fibonacci retracement levels at 1,689 and 1,605, or perhaps even lower. However, over a longer period, in my opinion, Amazon stock is worth keeping. When Mark was around ten years of age, his parents purchased a Windows 95 Computer and he became the designated computer person to input prices onto a spreadsheet from those his Dad called out from the Financial Times. He became hooked after that. Mark eventually began investing when he was 13 years old, after he had saved up enough pocket money to enable him to make his first stock purchase, under the supervision of his Dad. This continued and Mark’s love of numbers led to him attending Birmingham University where he studied Economics. Having studied the stock market from all sorts of angles and growing up around a family firm, he has been around businesses all of his life. He has tried and experienced all sorts strategies, including day trading, Ichimoku cloud analysis and top down macro investing, indicators. However the more he experienced, the more he learned the value of simplicity. Nowadays you won’t find any charts, or flashing indicators or complex algorithms on Mark’s screens. To quote Mark “sometimes you’ve got to be a fool before you become a Fool…!” Like many investors, reading Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway shareholder letters was a revelation to Mark. For many years now, his focus has been on investing for the long-term in high-calibre businesses listed on the stock market. Mark joined the Motley Fool investing team in 2013, and in January 2016 took over as Managing Director. Mark looks to hold shares for years and years when we finds the right ones. Mark’s and Motley Fool’s mission is to “Help The World Invest Better, and to avoid being bamboozled by the jargon and nonsense which is so prevalent in the investing world”. Mark states “I love what we set out to do at The Fool, and I love the challenges of both running a business and running a stock-picking service (as well as my own portfolio). We still have a long way to go and a lot of work to do — and like all good investors, I hope to never stop learning!” Listen now to gain insights into how Mark invests and learn from the lessons in his successful, insightful investing journey.
Ledger Cast — Crypto, Bitcoin, Trading, and the Blockchain Ecosystem
Welcome to Ledger Cast, hosted by me, Brian Krogsgard (@ledgerstatus on twitter), and Josh Olszewicz (@carpenoctom). Ledger Cast is a cryptocurrency trading and blockchain ecosystem podcast. You can subscribe to new episodes of Ledger Cast on iTunes, on Google Play, on YouTube and via RSS. The information in this podcast should not be construed as investment advice, it is purely educational material and you should always do your own research before buying. In this episode of Ledger Cast, Josh and I talk about pricing alt coins relative to the dollar versus relative to bitcoin. This is a common question amongst new investors, and getting your head around pricing an alt coin versus bitcoin can be a challenge. Many investors say they don't believe in charting versus the dollar at all. While I believe it's important to relate profits relative to bitcoin, USD charts can be valuable. In this episode, we talk about this in depth, and I'll also attempt to describe it here, including some visuals. In addition to discussing pricing in bitcoin versus the dollar, we also discuss general portfolio strategies, when to be in alts versus bitcoin, and when we decide to go to fiat (cash). We also answer some listener questions. Thinking about gains in terms of bitcoin When you buy bitcoin for some price -- say $10,000 -- if it doubles in price, it's very clear what you made. Buying alt coins is more dynamic. When you buy another coin, it is less clear, if your goal is to make more bitcoin. Why would your goal be to make more bitcoin? Well, if you could just hold bitcoin and do nothing, and make more USD than trading alts, why would you trade alts? So, if you trade an alt, there are two possible benefits: Diversity in your portfolio (maybe flawed) To make more bitcoin The reason investing in other coins for the purpose of diversification may often be flawed is simple: bitcoin going down makes everything go down relative to the dollar, usually. However, trading in alt coins can still allow you to make more bitcoin when bitcoin is either down or (preferably) sideways. Trading alt coins rather than holding bitcoin has potential failures: Alt coin can not keep pace of growth with bitcoin (go down versus bitcoin) It takes attention, time, and energy (it's stressful) You don't get bitcoin fork "dividends", if not holding bitcoin, which has been valued at something like 30% this year You pay fees for trading You may be liable for taxes due to trade activity triggering tax events So you have a lot of potential downfalls trading alt coins. However, trading alts is the most potentially lucrative way to increase your bitcoin, and therefore also your dollar balance of your portfolio. An example trade to make more bitcoin Let's say you bought Litecoin for $25, and it was equivalent to .01 bitcoin at the time. If you sell it for $50, you made 100%, but what if it's still only .01 bitcoin? Or what if it is now less than that? You now have less relative-to-bitcoin value even though you doubled your money. If that same dollar amount was just in bitcoin, you would have more dollars and you never had to make a trade. It is also possible to buy Litecoin for $100 and it be cheaper than when it was $50. So, if you bought Litecoin recently, it was as low as .00561, yet was $96 at the time. It is so much cheaper relative to bitcoin because in the time that Litecoin had doubled, Bitcoin had nearly gone 5x in value. Taking advantage of market cycles You can see in the picture above that Litecoin has been its current bitcoin relative price several times this year, yet it's at an all time high versus the dollar. So even though it seems you have have done well, you've only broken even versus bitcoin for much of the year. So, it's always important to know what both your bitcoin relative price is, and your USD price is. The way to take advantage of this Litecoin trade would have been to buy it when it was in the .01 range and sell it in the .02 range. It made that swing six or seven times in 2017, and could've been exploited to gain more bitcoin -- which would allow you to both increase your bitcoin and then of course your dollar value. Trading relative to bitcoin (if successful), you are able to take advantage of these market cycles relative to bitcoin. Of course every alt has these cycles, and they make look different. Another we discussed in the show was Monero, due to its very clear cycles. Again in this example, as you can see with the btc relative chart with the orange channel, you could swing trade the market cycles to gain more bitcoin. Not all coins look like this -- Ethereum shows another pattern that's common, where after a massive run, it spent months consolidating versus the dollar, and because Bitcoin was doing very well, it was losing value versus Bitcoin quickly. In this Ethereum example, the beginning of June was the last time you wanted to hold it, because Bitcoin performed better going forward while Ethereum consolidates versus the dollar. USD indicators for impulsion One of the most useful ways I've found to use dollar charts is to discover pending opportunities for impulsion. The Ethereum example above is a perfectly fine example. In this scenario, you wouldn't want to hold it during that consolidation period versus the dollar. But as the ascending triangle is nearing an end, it's getting close to a decision point to leave consolidation and make a larger move against bitcoin. Because an ascending triangle is a classically bullish chart pattern, the bet to make would be to own Ethereum either before it breaks out to get the full move, or to buy the breakout. The time frame gearing up to the large move is preparing for an impulsive moment in the chart. Using dollar charts in this way can help us predict when a coin may outpace bitcoin, and allow us to make more bitcoin. This applies to just about any coin in my experience. Another favorite example of mine is Siacoin recently. In the Siacoin US dollar chart, the two circles were potential moments of impulsion: the first an exit from the Ichimoku Cloud, and the second as a breach of the prior all time high. These look much different on the bitcoin chart. On the bitcoin chart, the first timeframe looked like a mega bottom. It's a very different story from the dollar version, which had already shown significant recovery. The dollar chart, in my mind, provided a hint toward further recovery, showing signs of bullishness. Yet in crypto, these bottomed out views often look "bullish" to traders for market cycle reasons, while technically they are highly bearish. The second circle in the bitcoin chart looks much like the first example in the dollar chart: sign of a promising recovery. Yet by this time with the dollar chart, Sia was in fact making a new all time high. But you can see it has a way to go versus bitcoin to achieve an all time high -- because since Siacoin last made an all time high relative to bitcoin, bitcoin's price had increased drastically -- making it even more difficult for Siacoin to outpace it. High velocity bitcoin and alt coin vs bitcoin correlation There is a common joke in crypto that when bitcoin pumps, alt coins dump, and when bitcoin dumps, alt coins dump. This has often been true, making the joke more painful for your typical alt coin trader. I relate this to the velocity of bitcoin price action. I broadly believe alt coin price is inversely correlated to bitcoin velocity more than bitcoin price -- and many other people do too; I didn't invent this, but I've tried to verbalize it my own way. At times when bitcoin is mostly sideways, or less volatile, it's possible for alts to outpace bitcoin because trader's are more likely to take money out of bitcoin and send it to alt coins. When bitcoin is moving very fast, it will be very difficult for alt coins to keep up. Though there are some magical times when bitcoin and alts have both pumped together -- but it has historically included massive influxes of new money distributing to both bitcoin and the rest of the crypto ecosystem. Portfolio management, margin trading, and more Josh and I talked about much more in the podcast, especially relating to portfolio strategies, but also margin trading concepts and more. I hope you enjoyed the podcast, as well as the descriptions of our primary topic here. Listener Questions Which time frames do we use and why? What do we think about Qtum's recent price action? Ledger Cast — Crypto, Bitcoin, Trading, and the Blockchain Ecosystem
Welcome to Ledger Cast, hosted by me, Brian Krogsgard (@ledgerstatus on twitter), and Josh Olszewicz (@carpenoctom). Ledger Cast is a cryptocurrency trading and blockchain ecosystem podcast. You can subscribe to new episodes of Ledger Cast on iTunes, on Google Play, on YouTube and via RSS. We cover technical topics on trading, fundamental analysis and various coins, news of the week, and more. In this episode, we discuss news of the week, and our primary topic is a discussion around buy and sell targets, and how we use various indicators to pick our targets. The information in this podcast should not be construed as investment advice, it is purely educational material and you should always do your own research before buying. News items of the week Crypto hit .5 trillion market cap Pricing since Thanksgiving A new ATH from bitcoin, followed by some alts running Litecoin network speed compared to Bitcoin and Ethereum clogging Charlie Lee on CNBC Crypto Kitties, the first Ethereum dApp!? SEC statement on ICOs and our thoughts on ICO mania’s drawdown. We also speculate on exchanges making adjustments or trying to mature in response to possible crackdowns on coins as securities. Marco Santori’s thread on the SEC announcement. Josh talked to Bitcoin Cashers in real life and has thoughts. We talked a bit about segwit and bitcoin scaling again. Also, discussed how we are aghast at Brian Armstrong and Coinbase’s shrugging of segwit as a priority. Josh thinks Coinbase will list Bitcoin Cash for trading, not just for distribution to customers who held during the fork. Coins discussed Some coins mentioned in this episode (Check out OnChainFX for information on all of these): Bitcoin: consolidating at ATH levels. Ethereum: huge move off USD ascending triangle. Litecoin: huge move beyond all boundaries that make sense to Josh. He did an article on it at Brave New Coin. Dragon Chain ICO and attachment to Disney. Vertcoin: Still on target for us for the weekly Ichimoku edge to edge trade (see my article with that chart). Tezos and the drama around their ICO. Bitcoin Cash and trying to be Bitcoin. A non-starter for Brian to trade or chart it. Doge and market cycles DEX (Decentralized exchange coins): Project 0x, Heat, Waves, Bitshares, Counterparty Anonymous transaction / privacy coins: Monero, Zcash, Pivx, Zcoin, Dash Target, Sir? (Primary topic on picking buy and sell targets) If you skip to minute 33, we start talking about technical analysis and how we choose buy or sell targets. Pattern analysis Generally, Josh trades using pattern analysis (his video on this). An example we used for pattern analysis is Ethereum’s multi-month ascending triangle on the high timeframe, and a flag on the lower timeframe. The measured move of this triangle was around $800, which was already achieved. Bollinger Bands Triggers are used in addition to pattern analysis. In the case of the Ethereum consolidation, Bolinger bands (video) could provide insight to measure volatility. As the bands tighten, the likelihood of a volatile move increases. In conjunction with the pattern, it allows you to predict possible price action. Ichimoku Cloud The Ichimoku cloud gives us a visual snapshot of the trend, with a lot of information. Again using our Ethereum example, the Ichimoku cloud versus the dollar was signaling bullishness prior to the ascending triangle breakout. An entry on this example could’ve been made at several levels: An agressive entry on the bottom diagonal of the triangle Buy the breakout of the Bollinger bands, or the triangle Buy the retest of the triangle top Comparing USD versus BTC pricing We can spend more time on this, but this example shows a Ethereum price comparison versus the dollar. However, the bitcoin relative price is also important. Josh and I both wish to have more bitcoin, so if Ethereum isn’t outpacing Bitcoin, then it’s better to hold Bitcoin. So the ideal here is to let Ethereum consolidate as much as possible while not in, and buy as the biggest portion of the move is about to happen, so that it can outpace Bitcoin’s bullishness. Getting this exactly right could be very difficult. However, both of us think it is worth looking at both the USD and BTC pairs for coins. When the charts align, it presents the most opportunity. Market cycles Market cycles are one of the most important considerations when buying alt coins. Josh gave the example of Doge and how it has these huge pumps relative to Bitcoin. Here’s an example of Doge versus Bitcoin. Note how the Doge/BTC chart is drastically different than the one versus the dollar. Despite Doge versus the dollar being near an all time high, it has failed to keep pace with Bitcoin. Yet, the bitcoin pair is now in the buy zone again, and therefore may present another market cycle opportunity, and a move in the Doge dollar price. Double bottoms / Adam & Eves everywhere Right now in alt coins, there are a lot of double bottoms, which are often presented as an Adam and Eve pattern where it’s a V and a U side by side, where the U is often a higher low than the V. When buying an Adam and Eve, you often see a retest of the pattern break, like you see above. Targets can be the distance of the orange line (middle of two peaks) to the lowest low. Thomas Bulkowski also notes more identification and success metrics for this pattern. Many more patterns We spoke of some patterns but there are many, many more. Josh’s playlist on indicators is very good. There are many ways to trade. We talked about how we tend to do things here, but there are many strategies. Another many crypto traders love is a method of bottom calling, where they try to “catch knives” if you will, and work to catch alt coins at their depths, rather than on trend confirmation. Selling partials One thing we both do is trade in ranges. It’s going to be hard to call an exact top, so when we are selling, we both try to establish a range of possible prices where we sell. For instance, if we want to see .04 btc to sell, maybe we set sells between .035 and .06 depending on how those prices work within various indicators: moving averages, fibonacci extensions, cloud levels, or whatever else. More in the podcast I’ve tried to recap some of what we discussed, but we went into more depth in the show, be sure to listen!
