What's scarier than working the night shift at a nursing home that's seen more exits than a revolving door? Try catching a quick cat-nap in a recliner once occupied by residents who've already signed the eternal discharge papers. Our anonymous Midwest nurse figured an empty chair would make the perfect 30-minute snooze spot—until the room flash-froze, her breath fogged the air, and invisible hands launched her out of the seat like a haunted eject button. Was it an over-protective former resident demanding privacy, or something far less polite? This is a daily EXTRA from The Grave Talks. In episode 15, Domenique and Paul try to avoid talking about Trump's tariffs but end up doing it alot. In between, they discuss housing affordability in Australia and the major parties policy proposals to address this before the upcoming Australian election; and whether the Euro could ever become the global reserve currency.
In 2006 an Australian investment bank bought Thames Water – Britain's biggest water company. Everything went well for a bit. And then people started noticing something strange. Sewage in the water. Leaking pipes. Hosepipe bans. Now in 2025 Thames Water is on the brink of financial collapse and looking for new owners. There is even talk about doing something shocking. Nationalisation. So what went wrong? Why did this water company which makes healthy profits year on year fail so badly. And what can that tell us about how the dream of free market capitalism has turned out, not just here but also in Donald Trump's America.David Dimbleby traces the history of an idea that charts his lifespan. From The History Podcast, this is Invisible Hands. This is the story of a hidden force that changed Britain forever — free market capitalism — and the invisible hands that shaped it.David Dimbleby traces the history of an idea that charts his lifespan. It started in a fighter plane in the Battle of Britain, gained traction in shadowy post-war London backrooms and rose to heights of excess in the new champagne bars of the City. Now it's 2025 and it has come to define every aspect of life in Britain. An idea that transformed the economy, politics and, ultimately, society itself. But how did it happen? Who are the little known people behind it? What did they want? And - as Donald Trump threatens to overturn the global economic system - is the free market here to stay? Or are we entering a new era?
James Goldsmith was a billionaire tycoon who thrived in the free-market revolution. He was a corporate raider who conquered both the City of London and Wall Street. He was a playboy – four wives, a host of mistresses and a reputation as outsized as a Bond villain. Then in 1987 he predicted a stock market crash and disappeared from the world stage. A few years later he turned up again, ready to tell the world something shocking. That everything he had believed about the free market was wrong. That a global elite had rigged the system and global capitalism was now stifling the very freedoms it promised to protect. That global free trade had led to a hollowing out of manufacturing towns and communities. That the nation state itself was being undermined. Then in 1997 he saw there was an election coming up in Britain. An election where he could spread his message that globalisation and global free trade had failed. An election that perhaps, more than any other, set the stage for Donald Trump. David Dimbleby traces the history of an idea that charts his lifespan. It started on a chicken farm in Sussex, gained traction in the shadows of post-war London and rose to heights of excess in the new champagne bars of the City. Imagine this: You're on your way to school, lugging your trombone, when suddenly, time itself decides to take a little break. A trip down the bus stairs turns into a bizarre near-death experience where invisible hands catch you. You freeze, hear nothing, and then the world rushes back like it never left. This listener believes a guardian angel saved them—or something else entirely. Could it have been fate, or was it something... much stranger? Thatcher and her capitalist dreamers' next big gamble was a radical shake-up of London's financial sector. They called it Big Bang. Seemingly overnight, the stuffy old City of London was replaced by a fast-paced world of risk-takers, rule-breakers, and yuppies brandishing mobile phones the size of their head. It was a golden age of capitalism, where fortunes were made at lightning speed and the stakes were just as high. Nick Leeson was a working-class kid from Watford who arrived at just the right time. By 1995 he was a superstar trader. He was a poster boy for Thatcher's Britain. Poor kid gets rich. But then something happened that turned him from a hero to a criminal on the run. Did the very thing that spurred on his success precipitate his downfall? And what did that mean for the Thatcherite revolution. This is a story of the boom and bust of the 80s.David Dimbleby traces the history of an idea that spans his life. It started on a chicken farm in Sussex, gained traction in the shadows of post-war London and rose to heights of excess in the new champagne bars of the City. In this episode, Domenique and Paul throw out the plan for the episode to discuss the biggest economic news story of the day: the fall out from Trump's new tariff regime on the world.
A young banker sits in front of a book full of balance sheets. Boring work. But he has come to a realisation. And it's a realisation that will, in a few short years, transform Britain. This banker - John Redwood - had realised that the best way to turn the country into a free market paradise was to sell all the big industries owned by the state to the people of Britain. To create a nation of shareholders. The only problem? No one wanted to listen to him. This is the story of a radical experiment in free market capitalism. One that had never been tried before. And of one man with a vision and a set of spreadsheets. To remake the country and sell capitalism to the masses.David Dimbleby traces the history of an idea that spans his life. It started on a chicken farm in Sussex, gained traction in the shadows of post-war London and rose to heights of excess in the new champagne bars of the City. A man throws up in a taxi on his way to an interview. He is nervous because he is about to make an argument. It's an argument that would change politics forever. His name was Keith Joseph. And this would be the start of a radical journey - from conventional conservative politician to ideological warrior and guru for Margaret Thatcher. Joseph set out on a tour of the country. He had eggs thrown at him, Marxist flags waved in his face. He was spat at. Heckled. All because he was arguing for one thing - the free markets.David Dimbleby traces the history of an idea that spans his life. A fighter pilot watches his brother plunge to his death in the Second World War. Grief-stricken, he vows to fight until his dying day for the cause of freedom. This man would return from war transformed and set out on a journey that would change Britain forever. He would dedicate his life to an idea. An idea that at the time was almost laughed at. That no one in positions of power dared talk about. That idea? Free-market capitalism. This is the story of the war hero turned chicken farmer who set the stage for Margaret Thatcher. In this new narrative series, David Dimbleby traces the history of the hidden force that changed Britain - the free market revolution - and the invisible hands that shaped it. Modern economics was built on ideas spelled out by Adam Smith in his 18th-century The Wealth of Nations. But while he used the term only once in that economic treatise, Smith is most remembered for “the invisible hand,” a metaphor Oren Cass says has wrongly been associated with the idea that the pursuit of profit is always socially beneficial and that markets are somehow magically guided by that principal. Cass is the founder and chief economist at American Compass. In this podcast, he says the contortion of Smith's idea led to a blind faith in markets, whereas “the invisible hand” was about ensuring the alignment between private profit and the public interest. Scripture Reading: 1 Samuel 23:1-14 We see in this story of David's flight from Saul an interesting and very significant dynamic. David was doing everything humanly possible to elude King Saul, who was bent on putting an end to David's life. He hid in the wilderness and in the hills (1 Sam 23:14) . . . he received information from Saul's son, Jonathan (1 Sam 23:16,17) . . . his men were carefully monitoring Saul's movements (1 Sam 23:24,25). The human means for David's safety are clearly displayed in this story. But above these human means there was an invisible hand that ensured David's security . . . the hand of a sovereign God. The last sentence in 1 Samuel 23:14 draws back the curtain shrouding God's movement in this circumstance, so we can see what is going on beyond the characters in the story. “And Saul sought him [David] every day, but God did not deliver him into his hand.” The Bible reveals a mysterious interaction between human actions and divine sovereignty. Men are responsible for their lives and the decisions they make and God governs His universe for His purposes. “The mind of man plans his way, but the LORD directs his steps” (Prov 16:9). “Many are the plans in a man's heart, but the counsel of the LORD, it will stand” (Prov 19:21). “. . . work out your salvation with fear and trembling; for it is God who is at work in you, both to will and to work for His good pleasure” (Phil 2:12,13). Let us pray and plan and work diligently in our lives, all the while seeking the Lord . . . knowing that our Father is the One who works all things after the counsel of His will (Eph 1:11).
Editor - Louise Ford, ACE NOSFERATU editor Louise Ford, ACE and writer/director Robert Eggers have reunited once again to take on the not-so-simple task of remaking FW Murnau's horror classic. Considering "Lou's" disdain for cover songs, it was important that this film could stand on its own merits and add something new to the world of cinema. And although she has a few supernatural/horror films to her credit, "Lou" insists she doesn't seek them out. She's just looking for great stories to tell. With NOSFERATU, she told one. NOSFERATU - In the 1830s, estate agent Thomas Hutter travels to Transylvania for a fateful meeting with Count Orlok, a prospective client. In his absence, Hutter's new bride, Ellen, is left under the care of their friends, Friedrich and Anna Harding. Plagued by horrific visions and an increasing sense of dread, Ellen soon encounters an evil force that's far beyond her control. Louise Ford, ACE NOSFERATU is the fourth feature film Lou has edited for Robert Eggers since their first collaboration in 2008 on his short film, The Tell-Tale Heart . Tom welcomes back Tim Price from Price Value Partners, to discuss the happenings on the other side of the pond. Price shares concerns over Europe's chaos, comparing it unfavorably to the US under Trump, who he sees as reducing 'woke culture' and neo-Marxist economic policies. He criticizes the media for losing credibility due to untruths and emphasizes the importance of understanding debt economics. Price reflects on his experiences during the exchange rate mechanism crisis and shares skepticism towards state planning, believing it has historically failed. Tim also covers the potential swing from left to right in politics and corruption issues, with Trump's election seen as a possible catalyst for change. Additionally, gold or non-fiat money is suggested as an alternative to the corrupted monetary system. Price calls for individual empowerment and market efficiencies, criticizes central banks, and advocates for real assets and value investing. He discusses potential implications of Bitcoin reaching new heights and Tether's role in it. Throughout the interview, Tim Price encourages listeners to consider traditional investments like gold and silver, often overlooked despite their attractive valuations compared to the stock market. We already knew Paul intended to complete the third missionary journey, then go to Jerusalem, and then he planned to go to Rome. Back in Ephesus:Acts 19:21: Now after these things were finished, Paul purposed in the Spirit to go to Jerusalem after he had passed through Macedonia and Achaia, saying, "After I have been there, I must also see Rome."While we survey the chapter, I want you to think like a X-ray machine. We're going to see what is here, but we are also going to look beneath the surface at what I'm calling Fingerprints Of The Invisible Hand a case study on the Providence of God.If the Providence of God can be described as His invisible hand at work in the world, in Acts 23 we can see Ten Fingerprints Of The Hand Of God. "An inflation conspiracy theory is infecting the Democratic Party," The Washington Post frets. "'Greedflation' is a nonsense idea," The Economist insists. "Harris' plan to stop price gouging could create more problems than it solves," CNN warns. Over the last few years, as the prices of groceries, cars, and other necessities have risen, often dramatically, leading news outlets and influential pundits have claimed that these rising prices are simply a matter of supply and demand. Corporations aren't taking advantage of inflation, we're told; they're simply responding to it. If materials are in short supply, or if there's a surge in demand, retailers have no choice but to raise prices to control production flows and costs. Likewise, if prices of goods are significantly higher, then the people who want those goods enough to pay higher prices can still have them. But these pat arguments don't hold up to scrutiny. Since the most recent round of inflation began, multiple studies have shown that corporations are indeed taking advantage of inflation, using tactics like price gouging to boost profits while creating barriers to quality food, medication, and other essentials. So what explains this discrepancy? On this episode, we examine the tendency of media to defend corporate price-gouging and other inflationary maneuvers, how high status pundits and Serious Economists critique the White House from the right on this issue and condescend to anyone who might be even slightly suspicious that corporations are animated by something other than just the Invisible Hand, painting them as wacko conspiracy theorist who simply need to take the vaulted "Econ 101." Our guest is the Revolving Door Project's Dylan Gyauch-Lewis.

Send us a textThe title of this episode might confuse you: what on earth do Adam Smith and F. A. Hayek have to say about social justice? A surprising amount, given how much we talk about it!Smith makes a big point of critiquing men of pride and vanity. What happens when those ultimately negative aspects of humanity go too far, into the territory of what he calls “domineering”? What happens when small acts of domination are aggregated throughout a society? So here we are, talking about slavery, Jim Crow, and the civil rights movement, through the lens of Hayek and Adam Smith. During the summer break, the 15-Minute History podcast team are republishing some of their favorite episodes. This episode and discussion on Adam Smith originally aired on April 18, 2022. ___ This season we have been covering individuals who have had a direct effect on history, in a positive or negative way. Adam Smith is one of those. He is called the “father of modern economics” and “the creator of capitalism”. Rather than walk you through a summary of his life, we will attempt to summarize the possible influences that formed three major concepts which exist in his later and final work, the Wealth of Nations, namely the appropriation of Self-Interest, Division of Labor, and the “The Invisible Hand”, thereby showing the linear deduction of each, and how that logic reflects in Adam Smith's moral philosophy. With the presentation of these three ideas, it's our hope that you will make your own deductions regarding what kind of man he was and whether his effect on history was a positive one. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/15minutehistory/support
Fear can be a powerful weapon. Gao Zhi, a 44-year-old Chinese man, knows this well. In 2020, after criticizing the Communist Party on social media, he left China and gained asylum in the Netherlands. But after Wang Jingyu, a Chinese celebrity dissident, moves into Gao's home, things start to go terribly wrong. Gao fears he and his family are now in the crosshairs of the Chinese Communist Party. On this episode of The Sunday Story, NPR's Global Democracy Correspondent Frank Langfitt and a reporting partner bring us the story of Gao and Wang. It's a tale of how the fear authoritarian regimes sow can be used to create a world of lies, betrayal, and manipulation.Learn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy

They discuss how mainstream media outlets like CNN, MSNBC, and major broadcast networks are perceived as propagating a liberal agenda, comparing these organizations to intelligence agencies in their ability to control information and manipulate narratives. They also critique the U.S. government's response to failures, particularly highlighting the post-9/11 scenario where, instead of accountability, there was a trend toward promoting individuals involved in failures and creating bureaucratic structures that do not effectively address the underlying issues. We each must employ critical thinking and take a vigilant approach to consuming media and engaging with governmental actions to ensure accountability and combat misinformation. ----------------------------------------------- Connect with The Scalpel: Website: https://scalpeledge.com Email: KFR@scalpeledge.com TruthSocial: @scalpeledge Rumble: @TheScalpel X: @TheScalpelEdge Instagram: @TheScalpelPodcast
