In this very special episode, we reflect on different versions of an old classic American Standard, "It Was a Very Good Year." Made famous by Frank Sinatra, we explore some of the other classy (and some quirky) versions of the tune, match each version with classy (and sometimes quirky) original cocktail selections. We also think back on our lives and on 2020, and while it's been a hard year for everyone, we talk about the things that we are thankful for. And as we always say, stay safe, stay responsible, BUT - as best you can - have fun out there. For the playlist of songs and full drink recipes, head to badbusinessmusic.com/imbibethevibe.Check out other episodes and our music Here on Spotify.

Our co-host Mike had a serious issue that sent him to the hospital recently.   Myself (Greg) and Chico talk about what's going on at the time we recorded this (last Friday). While we are trying to figure everything out in terms of a recording and release schedule for what's already in the can (Episodes 99, 100 and 101 are already recorded and need to be edited) we decided to give you folks at PTBN Pop some content this week.   Me and Chico discuss recent issues relating to the Pandemic, movie theater closings, David Spade, The Drew Barrymore Show, Tom Green pranks, Power Rangers and Super Sentai and of course The Fly.   A GoFundMe has been set up for Mike if you want to donate to pay for his hospital bills.   https://tinyurl.com/klaussiestrong   We'll be back here next week on PTBN Pop and have a safe week everybody.

First, every bad show has a bad season, it seems.  We will cover such bad seasons in future episodes.  For now, we are dedicating an entire show to one such season, Saturday Night Live's 6th season.  Almost nothing from the show's 5th season carried over, and it showed. Then, who doesn't love a good hometown commercial?  They're goofy, they're low-budget, they're corny, and often they're viral.  We look at over a dozen such ads.  Greg also rants and raves about The Sega Channel and Mike talks about his run-in with presumably the star of one of these ads. The folks of Jerusalem are confused in 33AD why the authorities let Jesus teach in the TEMPLE, in JERUSALEM. It WAS the most important place on earth. We have the (only and) Most Important God. That is why they built a temple THERE. In that exact place. It is a very important place on our planet. Before they built a temple there, one could argue it was the most important place on the earth. The Temple did not make the place important, it was important BEFORE then. The Temple just RECOGNIZED the place that was already important. Geography informs interpretation. That is why our Jerusalem-ites were confused: They want to kill him. That was apparently common knowledge by then. But somehow the authorities are also allowing Jesus to SPEAK OPENLY, and worse: SPEAK OPENLY IN THE T-E-M-P-L-E. Where the Hand of the Lord was stayed 1000 years ago. (David and the avenging angel of the Census 2 Samuel 24). Where the Hand of the Lord was stayed 2000 years ago when a Ram was provided for the non-sacrifice of Isaac. The Temple was a VERY important place because it rests ON a very important place. Today, if you go to Jerusalem, there is no more temple. But THE PLACE IS AS IMPORTANT as ever. Nothing has changed. Listen and share in their confusion as to why the authorities let Jesus speak in the MOST IMPORTANT PLACE on EARTH.

This week on It Was a Thing on TV, Mike, Chico and Greg look at two legendary Reality TV flops. First, A world run by kids--no curfews, unlimited candy, and no homework...right?  Here's a social experiment from 2007 which sought out to see how 40 children would run their own society, CBS' entry Kid Nation. Then, it's another social experiment gone wrong, in multiple ways.  Utopia didn't last two months and it cost FOX $50 million in just acquiring its rights.  Surely some heads rolled.  And what's the deal with the cartoonist as host? How to Harness the Winds of Discomfort to Get Where You Want to Go

Andrew Petty is Dying

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 27, 2020 10:46

What do you do when life gets uncomfortable? Discomfort’s not going away this side of the grave. So we’d better get used to it.  Even better, on today’s episode, you’ll learn how to USE discomfort to become the person you were MADE to be and live the life you were MADE to live.   It Was a Tough Week I was uncomfortable a LOT this past week. My last episode featured Joe Harsel, a friend and mentor who actually died for 30 minutes 3 years ago after experiencing sudden cardiac death, then remarkably came back to life for no apparent reason. As I said in that episode, that sudden cardiac death scenario is literally my worst nightmare--the scenario that can trigger intense anxiety in me. So it was a pretty big exercise in facing my fears to have that conversation with Joe. So glad we did, BTW--what a story, and so many important lessons for all of us from his experience.  Then, for several days last week, I had weird sensations in my chest that I couldn’t ignore and couldn’t explain. Anxiety began to have its way, and I was mentally and emotionally compromised for the entire day on Friday. Just ask my wife--she’ll tell you.  I finally went to the doctor--and emerged with nothing conclusive. I had to begin practicing what Joe talked about--embracing the mystery and uncertainty of life.  It was a lot of weight on the bar for me, and it didn’t feel great lifting it.  Slowly but surely, though, over the years I’ve been upgrading my relationship with Discomfort. As much as the discomfort of the last week was, well, uncomfortable and honestly, unwanted, I know that it can make me stronger, more resilient, and more prepared for life’s future challenges if I lean into it, harness it, and use it.    What Causes You Discomfort? I want to pause here for a moment. Anxiety is a consistent source of Discomfort for me. Take a moment to think of one of the most common sources of Discomfort in your life. Call it by name, and keep it in mind throughout the rest of this episode.  Alright. Let’s keep moving.    A Metaphor To Make the Point I spent two years during middle school in Southern CA in an amazing little beachside community. One of the most exciting things we did as a family during those two years was sail from Long Beach harbor to Catalina Island, one of California’s Channel Islands and a popular tourist destination since the 1920s, when chewing gum magnate William Wrigley, Jr. began developing it. My mom, sister, and I were all new to sailing. My dad was the most seasoned sailor among us, with a newly-minted captain’s license as proof. It turns out, sailing is a treasure trove of metaphors for life. Here’s one of them.  Assuming the vessel itself is seaworthy, a sailboat needs a couple of things in order to serve its purpose: the forces of wind and water. These forces are essential, not optional. Without them, you’re not sailing; you’re just sitting on a boat. The fastest “point of sail”--i.e. the direction you’re sailing relative to the direction of the wind--is called a beam reach. On a beam reach, you’re sailing perpendicular to the wind, or across it. Often, a beam reach is the most direct way to get from point A to point B. It’s also the fastest point of sail. Simple enough, right? The funny thing about a beam reach, though, is that it can make for especially rough sailing. The force of the wind blowing across the boat causes the boat to lean over (“heel over”) as the sails catch the wind and convert it into forward motion. The pulleys and cables and other rigging components pop and groan. The sails are stretched taut. The boat travels across the waves, so the bow digs into them, and spray flies across the deck. It’s wet, windy, and noisy.   Same Conditions...Very Different Experiences As a rookie sailor, I remember the beam reach as an uncomfortable, stressful experience. It didn’t feel okay. Could the boat and the rigging take that kind of stress and strain? Would the boat flip over? Was it really necessary to stay on that point of sail? Why weren't we doing everything we could to make it a more relaxed and peaceful ride? A more seasoned sailor on the same beam reach, though, says, “We’re good! In fact, we’re better than good. This is the best way to sail to get where we’re going. And this is exactly what this boat is built for.” He might trim the sails a bit and adjust the point of sail a smidge to optimize efficiency, but the seasoned sailor knows that this is precisely how we need to sail to get where we’re going. He sees the wind and water as allies, not threats--necessary forces to get him where he wants to go. Same forces of wind and water, same point of sail, same behavior of the boat in response to those forces--but two very different perspectives and experiences.   An Easier Way?  There IS a much more relaxing point of sail: "Downwind” keeps the wind at your back. The boat runs with the wind and waves instead of contrary to them. The ride is quiet and smooth and doesn’t require much of the sailor. It isn’t often, however, that your destination and the direction of the wind match so that you can run downwind all the way. As in sailing, so in life. Rarely (if ever?) do the forces in our lives--family, work, health, our own internal challenges, etc.--array themselves behind us and propel us on a relaxing “downwind” run toward our destination. Much more often, we find ourselves on a beam reach, sailing across the wind and into the waves, all of our physical, mental, and emotional rigging absorbing life’s forces in an effort to convert them into forward motion. The Choice is Yours Some moments, on some days, I’m a rookie sailor on the seas of life, fretting about this and that and worried that my ship will flip over or I don’t have what it takes to maintain the beam reach I’m being called upon to sail. On those days, I just want to turn downwind, to relieve the pressure on my rigging and have some peace and quiet. On other days, in other ways, I’m more of a seasoned sailor--monitoring the wind and waves, trimming the sails and adjusting my course to sail a solid beam reach. On those days, the stress and strain of life produce more exhilaration than anxiety. I take the helm with greater gusto and determination and welcome the forces swirling around me as good and necessary to get where I want to go. The wind and the waves and the spray remind me that I’m alive--ALIVE--and I’m fortunate to be the captain of my own vessel on the wild voyage of life. I go back and forth, and I think that’s pretty normal. But on the whole, if you graphed my overall trend through the ups and downs, I think I can honestly say that I’m becoming a more seasoned sailor. Some of that, at 46, I attribute simply to the passage of time. More of it, though, I attribute to the conscious choice I’ve made to become a seasoned sailor. Because we really do have a choice, don’t we? If we agree that the forces life exerts upon us are constant--only varying in intensity--and the way forward involves getting better at harnessing them rather than avoiding them, then intentionally striving to become a more seasoned sailor is the best choice. In the moment, it might feel better and relieve some pressure, but if we make a habit of turning downwind whenever life’s winds blow, we get incrementally off-course. Incremental course deviations over time compound into major waywardness over the years. Trim your sails. Stay the course. Put in the time. Do the work. The seasoning will come.   Seasoned Sailors Know When to Seek Shelter in the Harbor It’s worth noting that there are times when it is best to let down the sails, take shelter in the harbor, take on provisions, tend to repairs, and rest. There are also times when it’s wise to seek refuge because the wind and waves threaten to overwhelm you. Take a break. Sleep. Go on a vacation. Seek the counsel of a good friend, a coach, a counselor, a trusted spiritual advisor. Hike, walk, run, paint, read, refresh yourself. Part of becoming a more seasoned sailor is knowing when it's time to head into the harbor.  Then, again, as in sailing, so in life: After time at anchor in the harbor, after you’ve re-provisioned or the storm has passed, set your sails and get back out on the wild, uncertain, and (dare I say it?) exhilarating seas of life. There’s no sailing without the forces of wind and water. And there’s no meaningful progress in life without discomfort.   Life’s Greatest Source of Discomfort: What Will You Do With It? Know what can be especially uncomfortable? Our Mortality. What are you going to do with that discomfort?  My challenge to you is to let the pressure of your Mortality fill your sails with motivation to live with even more guts and gusto and abandon NOW so that when the ship of your life lands on that distant shore, you’ll be proud of your voyage.  If you’re uncomfortable, good; get used to it!   A Challenge Which sailor are you today--the rookie or the seasoned sailor? Which one are you becoming? Commit today to becoming a seasoned sailor by upgrading your relationship to life’s many Discomforts and harnessing their power to get you where you’re capable of going.    These Guys Have Helped Me a Lot: Check ‘Em Out Two people have had an out-sized influence on my relationship with Discomfort, and I want to thank them here and recommend their work to you. I first heard legendary Navy SEAL, Jocko Willink, say “If you’re uncomfortable, good!” And Ozan Varol, in his book Think Like a Rocket Scientist, has a fantastic section on the importance of embracing Uncertainty--an especially challenging form of Discomfort. (I’m sure the rest of the book is good, too--I just haven’t finished it yet!)   Let’s Sail Together: Get Where You Want To Go My purpose as a coach is to help you discover, enjoy, and deploy your unique purpose in the world. Sharing Our ExperienceIn Acts 26, we find the apostle Paul standing as a prisoner beforeKing Agrippa. Here, speaking directly to the king, Paul gave his ownpersonal testimony. He talked about his life, not only as a persecutor ofJesus’ followers but also, after his conversion, of his life as a witness toJesus and about the promise of the resurrection of the dead (Acts 26:8).When Paul was converted on the Damascus Road, our Lord spoke tohim and said, “ ‘I have appeared to you for this purpose, to make youa minister and a witness both of the things which you have seen and ofthe things which I will yet reveal to you’ ” (Acts 26:16, NKJV). Sharingour faith is always a dynamic experience. It is telling the story of whatChrist has done for us in the past, what He is doing in our lives today, and what He will accomplish for us in the future.Witnessing is never about us. It is always about Him. He is the Godwho forgives our iniquities, heals our diseases, crowns us with lovingkindness, and satisfies us with good things (Ps. 103:3–5). Witnessingis simply sharing our story of His amazing grace. It is a testimony ofour personal encounter with this God of amazing grace.Read 1 John 1:1–3 and compare it with Galatians 2:20. What similarities do you see? How is John’s experience similar to Paul’s?_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________Although John and Paul had different life experiences, they both hada personal encounter with Jesus. Their experiences with Jesus were notones that occurred at a particular point in the past and was then over. Itwas an ongoing, daily experience of rejoicing in His love and walkingin the light of His truth. Is conversion ever a thing of the past alone? Look at Ellen White’sstatement about those who thought their past conversion experience isall that matters: “As if, if they knew something about religion once, they did not need to be converted daily; but we ought every day, everyone of us, to be converted.”—Manuscript Releases, vol. 4, p. 46.Regardless of whatever your past experiences have been, evenif they were powerful and dramatic, why is it important tohave a relationship with the Lord day by day, to sense Hisreality and His goodness and power day by day? Bring youranswer to class on Sabbath.

Had a great mastermind on Monday morning on how to accelerate my goals. I described the scenario with new client Kim on the call. They gave me ideas such as reaching out to the builder and offering to clean the model home for free (count as advertising expense) and get my pdf/brochures into new homes, serving the neighborhood, giving Asher's or Penn State related thank you gifts to Kim, finding out if there is a closed group on FB for the neighborhood as I can do a FB Live, brochures/door hangers to 10 houses around Kim's, $50 credit to Kim, PDF on my biz for Kim to forward with promotion and helpful info on insurance, article on "How to Break Up with Your House Cleaner" and "How to Choose Your Next House Cleaner". I can also offer to review the builder and mention them on my show. These tips will help me farm a perfect neighborhood to get the 14 houses I need to hit my goal.Followed up with Sammy's and Asher's with GIVES. For Sammy's, I told them that I'm still promoting them and send a helpful article. For Asher's, I asked how I could partner to buy personalized chocolate gifts to my clients. In both cases, I didn't ask for anything in return. We shall see if either respond with an update on the cleaning proposals. 12 connects/follow ups for GMB reviews - I got 4 reviews! The ones from Pang and especially Dave are WHY I do this business. Read those reviews and reference, It Was hard to Leave.1-to-1 with Lauren Allegrezza, marketing to mission, she helps service based small business owners customize a marketing plan that is tracked, analyzed, and optimized to achieve their business objectives. this conversation led to the title of this week's message. I asked Lauren what caused her to move from the political world to marketing that's a big shift. She asked me the same question, engineering to cleaning. I have answered this question on the introduction and other episodes but Lawrence question knowing that she's in marketing got me to answer differently. I told her that we just bought a Honda Pilot for my business vehicle and I love it! And I told her that since the Honda Pilot what's the car we wanted if he came top-of-mind because we were researching them looking them up on the marketplace etc. I started noticing pilots everywhere I drove. sure, they are common vehiclesbut I started seeing him everywhere because they were top of mind. I related this analogy to my experience at General electric as an engineer once the vice president said I live in the city my wife lives in a different city, I became aware of marriages around me. They were top of mind and for the first time I started paying attention to my co-workers, managers, executives and I didn't like what I saw. Granted there were several good marriages but the majority were not. I saw a lot of flirting on the job, divorce, cheating, excetera it worked long hours didn't have lot of time for their family. Just like the pilot, marriages became top of mind because there's important to me and I fell out of love with GE. this is exactly what Lauren does her business as a marketing consultant, she works with individual clients to keep their business and message top-of-mind to their potential clients. and it really does work and I urge you to use it in your cleaning business. Are you writing at least a once-a-month newsletter two people that would be interested in buying your service is down the road? are you posting on social media with helpful tips and successes from your business? These people that's see you consistently will become top of mind and when they're ready oh, they will think of you first.

Tom Rhoads joins the podcast to talk about telehealth, COVID-19 and protecting patients at home on "People Always, Patients Sometimes." Janet Kennedy (00:02): Welcome to the People Always, Patients Sometimes podcast. A short while ago, our CEO and founder Tom Rhoads, published an article on Med City News called "It's Time to Integrate Telehealth into the Equation". It Was an interesting article about how COVID-19 has kind of changed the game when it comes to telehealth and trying to keep our patients in a nice safe environment: their home. As a result of that, we started to have conversations around the virtual office and decided that we'd like to explore that topic a little bit more, so I hope you enjoy this discussion of telehealth and integrating it into the full healthcare equation here on the people always patients, sometimes podcast. Janet Kennedy (00:49): It's very exciting for me to finally have the CEO of Spencer Health Solutions on the People, Always, Patients Sometimes podcast. You're familiar with Tom Rhoads' voice because he's introduced most of the previous episodes, but he's been so busy it's been very difficult to schedule a time to have him on the show. Well, COVID-19 has certainly changed things for everyone in the world. This global health crisis has forced most people to be working from home except essential workers for whom we have great support, love, and sympathy. But for us as a healthcare company, it's been very interesting and incredibly busy for us even though we have been working from home. I was able to schedule a conversation with Tom and I really want to talk about how is COVID-19 impacting healthcare today and in the future. Tom, welcome to the podcast. Tom Rhoads (01:43): Good morning Janet, and thank you very much. Janet Kennedy (01:46): Well, it's all been very difficult trying to work with each other from afar and it's working out actually very well, although I think we're all working very hard. How are things over at the Rhoads household? Tom Rhoads (01:57): You know it's good. We have two of our children home from college and they're doing their daily classes on video chat and zoom and then we have a senior in high school that it's actually just embarked on the same process and conducting everything virtually. It's a bit of a crowded house, but it's exciting for us to have all the kids home and trying to manage today and the noise and everything else going on. But we're healthy and that's the blessing. Janet Kennedy (02:20): I actually can't imagine what that's like having, in essence, five adults all in the same place, all needing to use the bandwidth to do what they need to do. Is that a challenge? Tom Rhoads (02:29): You know, it is actually. We work around each other relatively well, but there are definitely times when the bandwidth is being used by all five of us at the same time, so it's something that forces us to option, whether we're doing video or just voice, and oftentimes the latter is probably the most, the biggest choice we make. Janet Kennedy (02:49): You and I are both in great situations because we have jobs, we have paychecks, we have comfortable homes to live in, but that's not always the case for a number of people and as follow what's happening in social media. There are an awful lot of individuals who are really, really frightened that they are immunocompromised. They have chronic health conditions. They really feel a little bit in a panic. Are you getting that sense as well? Tom Rhoads (03:15): Without a doubt. I think we see it both in my, my own family where we have several members that have immune-compromised systems and are quite concerned about being in a position of catching COVID, and of course across the public. I believe they estimate that probably six, six to 7% of the population is in that bucket and in a country of 330 million people, that's, that's a high number. So it's scary times for them and for all of us. I think we individually have a responsibility to do our best, which I think we're embarking on to keep them safe. Janet Kennedy (03:46): I know you as a CEO are following both global information coming down as well as trying to manage a company that is in healthcare at this time. What do you see happening on a global or a U.S. perspective regarding healthcare that you find both concerning but also optimistic? Tom Rhoads (04:06): Well, I think the industries are beginning to do a pretty good job communicating and I'm getting information from a multitude of sources. The source of probably is most surprising or are the banks, they are putting together detailed prospectus on the spread of the disease, risks of the disease, leadership opportunities, et cetera, and these are a lot of our investment partners and some of the banks we work with. I think the industry as well as doing a very good and thorough job communicating and making sure information's out there. I think it crossed the world. We're seeing basically two themes. One is why didn't we react earlier to this and then two is how will we navigate our way out of it? On the first question, I think it's pretty difficult to answer. We could say in hindsight that we needed to build 100,000 ventilators and put them in a warehouse, but we didn't know that this would be a respiratory disease, so it's a little bit pie in the sky to assume that you can predict which disease was going to affect the population and how you would respond to that. Tom Rhoads (05:07): That doesn't say that we shouldn't be prepared and then I have deep planning and processes in place. I think based on the response we probably see a lot more of that than people may be given credit for on the other side. How do we navigate out of it? I think we're doing that. I think social distancing is helping tremendously. I think it's keeping a lot of people, you know, safe and out of harm's way. Right now it's an evolving disease. So at first, we thought it was only transmitted via contact and now we're saying potentially airborne. You know, the community right now I think is doing its level best to both identify a vaccine that we may see this time next year as well as give us the time we need and contain the spread as much as possible through social distancing and other types of programs. Tom Rhoads (05:51): I think at the end of the day it's the community's response to it that'll dictate how this goes. I think the tough part to swallow here I believe is the fact that a lot of people are still going to get sick and a lot of people are going to die because of this. It is a, you know, death as they say trails, the infection, you know, seven to 21 days. So it's something that even as we see infections continuing to go up, the one thing we will see as a tail and that's, that's one of the things that we've got to keep our eye on and again continue to not panic ourselves but be in a position to drive that down and that's where everyone talks about, you know, leveling off on this and then driving it back down. Janet Kennedy (06:28): You make a really good point Tom about information changing and I think the hard thing for our citizens to deal with is the fact that something they heard last week isn't the same as something they would hear this week and they have to be open to new information coming in. What's your take on the rapid change of information regarding COVID-19? Tom Rhoads (06:50): I think from a healthcare community standpoint, they're doing a very good job responding to and preparing for both care of those with the disease as well as trying to communicate out how to de-risk the population against getting the disease. I think is a lot harder for the general population to respond to the rapid changes in direction or seemingly rapid changes in direction due to new learnings. I think the healthcare community is uniquely positioned that they're used to that type of ongoing learnings. In fact, they strive for it and so they're expecting changes, new opportunities to position their teams or processes and their responses. But I think for the general population it's, it's tough. It seems like we're kind of swinging from one side of the other. In reality, I believe it's just a normal path that we would see in a response and learnings associated with something as severe as COVID. Tom Rhoads (07:45): I think on the business and banking side, we're used to having a plan B, plan C, and, and I believe they're responding relatively well to the new information that's coming on the scene and some of the new directives for those that aren't in healthcare and aren't used to this type of situation in business. I imagine it can be just hardening. And I, I hope they understand that the response that the healthcare community's taken, I think is a good one, a path well worn over the years by how they go about solving problems as complex as this. Janet Kennedy (08:13): One of the upsides of a challenge like this is that new technologies have a chance to really step up and play an important role in helping solve the problem. And certainly, nothing could be said more about telehealth than it's time has come. Tom Rhoads (08:30): Tele-health has been around for almost 20 years now, and I think the industry 20 years ago may not have thought it would take quite as long to have kind of a sea change, but I believe we're in the midst of it for sure. You know, we've always had a population that seemed right for telehealth, high-risk patients, the potential for disease transmission and mobility issues and all those were ride for, you know, the first movers and the world. I think the technology's done a really nice job migrating itself from something that might've been difficult to use at the beginning of years to something that's very, very easy to use now. And so that being said, I think there's also a lot of new players, but you know, if you're thinking medical visits, clinical research, any person that's at risk of contracting, any kind of contagious disease, he has a very powerful incentive for them to use telehealth in those providers to enable those services so that they can do them remotely. I think some of the challenges, and this is typical in healthcare, is that the, you know, the payment systems have given some incentive but not a lot of incentive to use these type of technologies. Tom Rhoads (09:36): What we've seen in the last two months is a complete about-face on that where telehealth is now seen and reimbursed at the same rates as an office visit. And I think the population is seeing for the first time just how easy it is to use these services and convenient as well as much, much safer both for the patient and their provider team. Janet Kennedy (09:54): Now that the horses out of the barn, do you see any going back to the way things were or do you feel that telehealth has crossed over and may become part of the standard of care? Tom Rhoads (10:05): I certainly think there's an opportunity for it to become a standard of care moving forward. I'd like to think that the horse has left the barn, but the answer will probably lie in the payment structure. If we flip back to a payment structure that you know, marginally incentivizes people and providers to use the service, then I think we'll probably be back where we were prior to the contagion that said, you know, we've talked a lot of years now about being a consumer's economy. Tom Rhoads (10:31): That healthcare is really turning to where you know, the patients are driving the ship, better transparency both in records and pricing, etc. And that there'll begin making more informed decisions. So I think the fact that they've been using it successfully will open the door and expectation at these types of services would be offered more conveniently accessed and we'll see that as the future. So if I was betting, I'd say the horse has left the barn and we'll see these types of services expand dramatically and change, you know, what we would view today as the doctor's office. I think that'll change dramatically in the future. Janet Kennedy (11:06): I can't help but believe it's more efficient on both sides of the equation that obviously for the patient to stay in their home, not have to drive to a doctor's office and put themselves at risk for catching or sharing whatever they're dealing with. That alone is both hours of time and compounding risk. But from the physician standpoint, I imagine it's got to be more efficient to be dealing with telehealth. So I can see that this should be the sea change that many are hoping for. Tom Rhoads (11:35): I would agree. I telehealth offers, you know, from a provider side if we just, if we look at their day and opportunity for a large percentage of their patients to be seen quickly and conveniently so they could not only increase their patient satisfaction, which is a key measurement and the triple aim because you're being seen at the time, you know, you've scheduled, et cetera. But it gives them an opportunity to see more patients, but while not degrading the level of care because they just don't have, you know, a lot of the front end issues and the office issues and things of that nature. Tom Rhoads (12:07): I think there's an interesting opportunity here as well where if you're saying a particular doctor, I think we'll eventually see where I say, well we think you might need to see a specialist of some sort for this particular issue and now they can begin bringing those specialists in line very, very quickly. Possibly even on call, depending on how large office they are to view or have conversations with as individuals. So I think, the future can be very bright and very efficient. And I think for the patient, very satisfying as it relates to where this can go and how they can better connect their care team. I wasn't around when Spencer was formed, so I'm curious about as you were designing the concept of the Spencer device. Was telehealth always intended to be a part of this product? It was telehealth. If you think in terms of someone you're trying to have a direct patient relationship within their home, you need to think in terms of a convergence strategy, meaning that for us to have a proper level of care for that individual, we not only have to kind of address the management issues, which alone can account for about 30, 33%, 35% of hospitalizations for an older patient group, but you have to be able to manage a lot of the other indicators that are associated with adherence or re-hospitalizations or advancement of the disease. Tom Rhoads (13:27): And that's biometrics that you can grab passively, questions and answers so that you can serve them and better understand how things are going if there's progression, et cetera, keeping their family involved, and then most importantly, I think the telehealth. So if you can't turn on the last screen there to allow them to actually conduct a call in the safety of their home and be in a position, to get some advice, then I think you've missed the boat. Tele-health was always an important aspect of our direct to the patient platform and it really opens a door not only for the care management provider based markets but also in the specialty and clinical research markets. Janet Kennedy (14:06): Tom, I understand that one of the reasons that you are interested in founding Spencer Health Solutions was because a personal situation regarding an elder in your own family and the elderly are very, very much in need of an at-home solution. However, they also are the least comfortable with technology. So in designing Spencer, how did you bring in to the technology, the fact that it needed to be easy for the elderly to use? Tom Rhoads (14:35): From an early point, we definitely felt that we had to be relevant across all demographics. So when you look at that range, the first question you got to ask is who's going to have the most difficulty with a piece of technology? I have the least familiarity with it and therefore become your kind of focal point to make sure that it is easy to use for them and if it is easy to use for them, therefore it has a cascading effect across the rest of your demographic. So the elderly definitely pop into that as a population. They typically won't volunteer to use technology. Usually, their families have a lot to do with what they use and how they use it. Tom Rhoads (15:14): As an example of a phone, they probably have smartphones primarily so they can text and video chat with their family and their family's probably demanded, especially the grandkids that they use those so that they can communicate and they do. They use them now very effectively. So for us, it was important to understand that population, make sure that our technology was indeed easy to use by their definition, not ours. And then by doing that, we should be in a solid position to be as relevant to a 20 something population. I think the other misnomer in this type of development is that 20 something year old because they're very technology-centric, are very open to complexity. Because of that, we've not found that to be true. They're looking for technologies that are already easy to use and intuitive as well. So we knew if we could solve for one end of the spectrum, then it should have an effect on the entire demographic. Tom Rhoads (16:03): And I think we've seen that. I think as we move forward and look at other technologies that come into the market or serving this population, they're going to have to live by that standard. We went to a great extent to make sure that we did meet it, with extensive user groups and testing and feedback on human factor studies and things of that nature. And I think we've hit it on the head, at least based on the feedback we've gotten, which is the most important and relevant measurement of whether you have something that will work longterm. Janet Kennedy (16:29): Excellent. Well, I find the Spencer interface out of the box easy to use. While I consider myself a technology person, I'm not necessarily a device person and I don't need to have any of that experience in order to use Spencer. It's very, very intuitive and super easy to interact with, literally right out of the box. Tom Rhoads (16:53): Glad to hear it. Janet Kennedy (16:53): Okay! We've had a great conversation about telehealth today and I know it's one that's going to be front and center in conversations around the world and in the healthcare industry. If you have some questions about telehealth, go into our blog post and you'll find a fact sheet where we give you some updates on what's happening in telehealth right now. 15 Things Podcasters Can Learn from Joel Osteen

I was in Houston for the Spark Christian Podcast Conference where I was speaking. It was a great event for the first time out of the gate and I met some really cool people. My buddy Sunny from the IPN asked me if I wanted to go see Joel Osteen who runs the largest church in America and is also an author and someone I refer to as "Happy Jesus Man." Jole is incredibly successful (his church is the building where the Houston Rockets professional basketball team played. It's a stadium that holds 16,800 people).  I have listened to Joel on and off over the years. I went to feed my spiritually, but I was also there to observe and look for the clues of his success. You don't get this big without doing something right. Time Codes 01:08 Spark Christian Podcast Conference Review 02:38 What Podcasters Can Learn from Joel Osteen 30:52 How did you get over your self Doubt? 41:10 Free Webinar on Equipment 42:19 Have you surveyed your audience? Joel Started As A Geek Joel was the technical person in his church working with his father. He was the lighting tech and worked for his Dad. Joel Did Something Different There is a style of preaching in the church known as "Hellfire and brimstone." This is where you explain to your audience that if you don't accept Jesus you are going to Hell where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. Instead of peaching about the horrors of Hell, Joel went to the bible and found all sorts of scriptures that point out how God wants you to prosper. Some have deemed this the prosperity Gospel, and because it's different than what people previously did, this has its critics. This has not swayed Joel from his message. He is covering the bible the way he wants to. He Makes it Easy for First Time Visitors Sunny and I had walked into what appeared to be a side door, and weren't exactly sure where to go. It was easy to identify who the staff was and we just walked up and said, "Hi this is our first time here." The worker knew exactly what to do and before I could blink I was given to a person who was giving me a tour of the building and explaining that there was a book store and if I wanted to buy anything Joel would sign it at the end of the night. He then escorted us to fourth-row center stage seats. I felt lucky. I felt special. The sanctuary was beautiful. They had cool lights in the ceiling and an amazing backdrop behind the band, and a choir made of people of every shape, size, and color. He Honored The Heritage of the Church and What They Believed in He played clips of his father who started the church and acknowledged those who came before him. Oh, I'm sorry this isn't for you... It's for the academy of podcasters. Let's move on. It Was a Well Oiled Machine There were no lags in the presentation. You didn't see the praise band ask, "He should we move on to the missing thing" and then someone says "Yeah, let's do the missing thing. Let's roll the mission intro." When the song was over, the mission people came out, the spoke about a conference that had just wrapped up. They introduced the video about how they were helping with Ebola in Africa and the video clip came on. Everyone knows what was next. They Through in a Curve Ball Their band did two praise songs (very upbeat - very easy to sing along) that engaged the audience. Then one of the soloists on the stage snuck into the audience at the end of the song. She then launched into an old Christian classic "Nothing but the blood" from the back of the auditorium so the people in the back now get the same view as those in the front. Most music performers pull this trick in concerts. They went back to singing more songs from the front of the stage. Pacing and Anticipation This is a great tip for those narrative style storytellers. They kept the service moving with the music, but about five songs into their performance their backdrop which looked like the galaxy with millions of stars started to reveal the word JESUS in big bright letters as the band hit a crescendo. The place erupts into applause, the band plays louder, hands are raised into the air and as the final notes of the song fade out Joel Osteen takes the stage and opens his message with prayer. Everybody Knows and Does Their Part The band multiple guitar players, keyboardists, and hundreds of backup singers, they all worked together to deliver the song in the best way that connects with the audience. The security for Joel was extensive. They were very good and kept him safe while allowing people to meet and greet him after the service. If you have a show with a host and a co-host someone is driving the show and someone is color commentary. Know Your Point and Back It Up Joel's message could be boiled down to this. "When you're in a bad situation you should still help others who are having problems." All of these scripture references helped illustrate his point. This is similar to the book I recommend Secrets of Dynamic Communications: Prepare with Focus, Deliver with Clarity, Speak with Power by Ken Davis. Explain Things with a Personal Story After sharing some examples from the bible, Joel explained a story about hos his Dad was trying to raise money for a new auditorium but heard about a smaller Spanish church had run out of money for their church and this "Half a church" was just sitting there gathering dust. Even though Joel's Dad needed the money for his project he gave it to the smaller church. Anytime you can make your point with a personal story, I recommend you do it. This gives your audience a chance to get to know you. Joel Was Vulnerable At the end of the story about Joel's father, Joel explained how he is still benefiting by the step his father took. In the middle of the sentence, he paused, tried to say the sentence again, and again he had to stop. His emotions were deep in his thought. He put his hands over his eyes and turned his back to the audience. He said, "I'm sorry yall, I cry to easy, and I cry too much. Nobody booed. Nobody shouted, "HOW UNPROFESSIONAL" and instead they cheered him on. He turned back around with his red eyes, and grabbed a tissue and wiped his eyes. I can't find another way to explain it besides saying this was a "real" moment, and instantly felt more connected with him. Later in the service that I watched on Sunday (where he did the same service), he started one line and said, "Did I say that right? I'm going to say it again." Joel Knows His Why and It Aligns with his Call To Action Joel's goal is to get you to know Jesus and accept him. At the end of the service, he has a call to action to accept Jesus. He Promotes Subscriptions and Makes it Easy During the service and at the end, they put a link to their website on a giant screen with mentions of their podcast. Joel is a Collaborator I see on his website he is doing a service with Kanye West. He SERVED His Audience At the end of the night, he went through hundreds of people meeting them, signing books (or not) and treating each and every person like they were his favorite person in the whole world. He had his crew borrow their phone and snap pictures so they could share it on social media. So they could easily share what a great time they had a Lakewood church. By the time he had made it to me, there was talk he might shut down the line as it was long. He made it through. He was visibly tired. He had just performed a service and was probably feeling the dip as the adrenaline of preaching in front of thousands of people had left his body, but instead of instructing his team to send us home he waved us in knowing it would just add another 30 minutes or so to his evening. Whenever you have a chance to meet your audience to do it and say thank you. Never could she have imagined that six people would lose theirlives that evening in what would become one of the most horrendous familymassacres in Washington State history. But some wonder if the outcome could have been different. Ifonly the Sheriff's deputies who responded to the first 911 call had scaled thepadlocked metal gate and made that long trek up that steep private road on foot…instead of driving away.

He has been featured on National Lampoon Comedy Radio numerous times. He is the executive producer and creator of Orange County's Funniest Person Contest™, Ultimate Laff-Down Comedy Competition™ and California’s Funniest Female Contest™. From the "Learn From My Mistakes" page on his website: SORRY LONG STORY BUT HAPPY ENDING. Late January 2016, I woke up around 5 am with the worst pain in my upper back. I couldn't go back to sleep. I tried ice and ibuprofen. Nothing worked. The pain was getting unbearable. I called 9-1-1. When I was with the paramedics and in the ER, I was screaming in pain, “Please help me!!!” They couldn’t give me any painkillers because they didn’t know what was wrong with me yet. My blood pressure was over 200/100!!! After x-rays and CT scan, a doctor told me that I had a tear in my aorta. I didn’t know what an aorta was, but it sounded serious. IT WAS!!! I was transferred to another hospital that could handle my condition. Couple days later they found two more aortic tears now three in total. I was getting worse. I was bleeding internally which if not fixed would kill me. I still remember the surgeon standing over my bed telling me that I needed surgery and that my family needed to get to the hospital ASAP. I thought, “Why? So, I could say goodbye to them? Get my affairs in order?” The surgeon told me that there was a 30% chance that I lose my left arm and 10% chance lose my legs because where the tears were in my aorta. Unfortunately, they had given me blood thinners to lower my BP. They couldn’t do the surgery on blood thinners because my blood wouldn’t clot. Now a balancing act, between needing surgery now and waiting for the “thinners” to get through my system. The first surgery was stopped because there was blood in my spinal fluid which could cause paralysis. I had to wait another 12 to 24 hours for surgery. Hopefully the “thinners” would be out of my system by then and I wouldn’t die before they could do surgery. The wait was scary but helped by the great love and support from my friends and family. I had over 300 posts on my Facebook page praying for me and wishing me well. The second surgery was successful. I now had extra hardware in me. Five stents in my aorta. Still had my left arm and legs. Three months later, I had a third surgery. This time I had an allergic reaction to the “dye” used to see the tears. I woke up from surgery with my arms tied to the bed and a tube down my throat. Not a pleasant experience to have the tube removed. Later the surgeon would tell me that he was afraid that he had lost me because of the allergic reaction. Now three years later, I have lost 35 lbs. since my surgery. Walk 5 to 10 miles a day. Eat a lot better. THE MORAL OF THE STORY?!?! I nearly died because didn’t take care of my health. More specifically control my hypertension (High Blood Pressure). I used to brag that I hadn’t been to the doctor in years. Realize now that wasn’t a good thing to brag about. Hypertension is called the silent killer. You only know something is wrong when something bad happens like a stroke, heart attack, tears in your aorta… Check your Blood Pressure recently? If it’s over 120/80 then act. Here is a good link about hypertension: https://www.webmd.com/hypertension-high-blood-pressure/default.htm Much LOVE, Bill Word https://www.gofundme.com/helpBillWord

Welcome to the podcast, with your hosts Michael and Jinglebell Jeremy. JBJ brags about a brut IPA from Firetrucker that he had while watching the Lighthouse. (It is a movie.) Michael recommends "It Was a Fine Luncheon". Due to our lack of wintery beers on the show, despite being in season, we talk winter warmers and hypothesize one of our own. We then discuss "The Bride of Drinkenstein" as a potential sequel to a previous homebrew. Finally we get into the FDR, where we have another one of The Uniques. Do we lambaste kraisins? Listen and find out?Beer in this episode: De Stihl Hawaii Five AleCheers!
