We're continuing our journey on the open road this month with a classic Disney movie released three decades ago. In this film, a father and son come to terms with the circle of life while realizing the importance of being prepared to face the challenges of a road trip. Far from meaning “no worries” for the son (who wants to feel the love tonight with his crush), the efforts of the father (who just can't wait to be king of the road) to reconnect with his son lead to a veritable stampede of sight gags, one-liners, and comedies-of-error. No, it's not The Lion King! Based on the Disney Afternoon cartoon series Goof Troop, produced by Jeffrey Katzenberg, and featuring the voice talents of Bill Farmer, Jason Marsden, Jim Cummings, Kellie Martin, and Rob Paulsen, it was a massive flop on release and was critically panned. But in the thirty years since, it has gone on to become a cult classic, with a direct-to-video sequel in the year 2000, multiple pop-culture references (including in Donald Glover's Atlanta), and a documentary, Not Just a Goof, released just this month. Ladies and goofs, it's A Goofy Movie! But will we be seeing it “I 2 I”?   For more geeky podcasts visit GonnaGeek.com   You can find us on iTunes under ''Legends Podcast''. Send us a Text Message.Pretty and popular 15-year-old Kirsten Costas had it all. She was the teenage dream at Miramonte High School in Orinda, California in the 1980's. Jealousy and rage from a member of her peer group would cause a horrific crime to take place on the night of June 23, 1984. A community would never be the same. The 1994 TV movie, Death of a Cheerleader, starring Tori Spelling and Kellie Martin would be based on this case. The highest ranking movie of 1994 would spark a debate about whether or not the murder of Kirsten Costas was planned. Or was it a jealousy fueled impulsive rage? Bret Berg from the Museum of Home Video and the American Genre Film Archive joins us and he has chosen a pair of made for TV movies ranging from 70s horror to 1990s ripped-from-the-headlines true crime. Our first feature is GARGOYLES (1972) one of the many TV terrors that scarred Gen-Xer childhoods. Cornel Wilde and Jennifer Salt are a father-daughter team of occult researchers who discover a race of living gargoyles in the caves of New Mexico. Former SF 49er and LA Ram Bernie Casey in full-body Sam Winston make-up effects plays the winged-stuff of nightmares as the Gargoyles' leader + Scott Glenn as a young dirt bike punk! Then, Kellie Martin is an ambitious nerd girl who murders mean girl Tori Spelling in DEATH OF A CHEERLEADER aka A FRIEND TO DIE FOR, the most watched TV movie of 1994, if Wikipedia is to be believed. The film is based on the true story of 15-year old Kirsten Costas who was stabbed to death by a classmate, Bernadette Protti, on June 23, 1984. While this movie is a departure from what we'd usually program on OMFYS, something about it dredged up Cory's memories of being accused of horrible animal mutilations because he was the only goth kid at his high school, and Bob found parallels to a murder near San Francisco that his mom was briefly suspected of. This movie may have been even more traumatizing than GARGOYLES! In the opening segment, Bob, Bret and Cory talk about other made-for-TV horror movies, and the inspiration behind The Museum of Home Video, his weekly "found-footage variety show for stoners, seekers, archivists and drinkers." Bob brings up The California Music Channel, the San Francisco Bay Area's public access answer to MTV, which is something he hasn't thought about since the 80s. Cory counters with The Box, Los Angeles' music video request show. Is there a hyperlocal Chicago or Milwaukee version of MTV? We want to know! Be sure to check out Bret Berg's weekly live stream of media weirdness Tuesday nights at 7:30 pm PST at www.museumofhomevideo.com Thanks Bret. A Goofy Movie is a 1995 comedy-musical from Disney Animation, based heavily on the Disney Afternoon cartoon Goof Troop, which relocated the iconic Mickey Mouse character Goofy to the suburbs to raise his single child Max. A Goofy Movie follows a misguided attempt at father-son bonding over a cross-country fishing trip, the antics which ensue, and the gradual repair of their relationship. The movie featured the voices of Bill Farmer, Jason Marsden, Jim Cummings, and Kellie Martin, and featured music written by Tevin Campbell, and while only a moderate hit upon its release, the film developed a strong cult following over the years, and is now a beloved piece of ephemera among Disney fans.On this episode of Hell Is A Musical, Lilz and Scott welcome the return of Kendra Beltran of Crushgasm for a viewing of A Goofy Movie. Join them for a deep-digging discussion on the logistics of a high school assembly, the disturbingly Tarantino-esque levels of foot shots, Pete's tyrannical grip upon the town of Spoonerville, and...SIGH...Pauly Shore......with Lilz and Scott!

It was late 2011 when 54-year-old Kellie Martin had her accident. Along with her husband Don Martin, Kellie was retrieving Christmas decorations from their attic in Garland, Texas, when she missed a step on a ladder.  The fall resulted in a herniated disk in her back, an incredibly painful injury that she treated with physical therapy, muscle relaxers and pain relief. Eventually, her doctor recommended surgery.  An elementary school teacher, Kellie scheduled her surgery in the break of March 2012. The neurosurgeon, Dr. Christopher Duntsch, explained the procedure was simple and routine. It would only take 45 minutes, with a quick recovery. When the day came, Kellie and Don had complete trust in Dr. Duntsch. He was articulate and reassuring. The exact kind of doctor you'd want looking after you. But the 45 minutes came and went. Don sat in the waiting room, starting to wonder if something had gone terribly wrong. Eventually, Dr. Duntcsh came out. The surgery had been a success, although Kellie was in a little pain. Then, he went on to explain she might have to go up to the ICU or stay overnight. Alarm bells started sounding for Don. Something wasn't right.  Hours passed. Still, they were working on her. Don and Kellie's daughter's arrived and waited with their father. They were confused. Sick with worry.  That's when the ICU physician, Dr. Duntsch and the anesthesiologist met with them.  Kellie was dead.  Dr. Duntsch, they would later discover, had sliced an artery, and Kellie had bled to death.  For the Martin family, they were living their absolute worst nightmare.  What they didn't know, was that of the 38 surgeries Dr. Duntsch had attempted in the last two years, 33 had gone wrong. Patients were left in chronic pain, others unable to walk, or with permanent injuries.  Patients and doctors demanded answers. And eventually, they would get them.    CREDITS Guest: Marshall Lewy from Wondery Host: Jessie Stephens Producer: Gia Moylan Audio Producer: Ian Camileri You can stream the new Dr. Death television series on Stan.   CONTACT US Tell us what you think of the show via email at truecrime@mamamia.com.au   Join our closed Facebook community to discuss this episode. Dr. Christopher Daniel Duntsch started his neurosurgery practice in Dallas, Texas in 2011 after completing a training program at the University of Tennessee in Memphis.  When he relocated to Dallas, Texas, his first job at the Minimally Invasive Spine Center ended when he left a patient unattended after surgery to jet off to Las Vegas.  He then moved to Baylor Plano Hospital, where his surgeries were plagued by bad outcomes.  After a brief suspension of his privileges, Duntsch was reinstated to perform “simple procedures.”  During one such procedure, Kellie Martin died when he severed an artery.  After Martin’s death, Duntsch resigned and Baylor Plano closed their investigation.  His next surgeries at Dallas Medical Center resulted in bad outcomes for multiple patients.  Floella Brown died when Duntsch blocked an artery, triggering a massive stroke.  Several patients were totally or partially paralyzed by severed nerves and misplaced hardware.  Drs. Randall Kirby and Robert Henderson lobbied the Texas Medical Board to revoke Duntsch’s license.  Fear that he would move to another state and harm more patients led them to lobby the Dallas County District Attorney’s office to take action.  Join Lisa O’Brien and Michael Carnahan on Tuesday, November 5, 2019, as we talk about the criminal case against Duntsch, his trial, conviction, sentence and direct appeal. Viv Leacock is beloved by fans around the world for two very different but equally entertaining roles: Fincher Garland in the Hailey Dean Mystery movies starring icon Kellie Martin, and Gripps, a member of a quartet of bonkers vampires known as the Rowdy Three – think about that math for a second – on BBC America's cult favourite series Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency. Although Viv is an accomplished actor (his long list of credits includes Loudermilk, 2012, and When We Rise) and experienced stand-up comedian, he eschews both labels in favour of “entertainer” – and he learned a lot about how to entertain people from his dad, as well as during the four months he spent working with one of his idols, Eddie Murphy, on 2002's I Spy. In this wide-ranging interview, Viv talks about growing up Black in Canada, racist roles, watershed conversations with his West Indian dad, his time on the comedy circuit, his Dirk Gently audition story, and why the character of Fincher Garland is so close to his heart.

As the 30th anniversary of THE ‘BURBS (1989) descends upon us, it’s astonishing how the film still feels so fresh. By intelligently poking fun at suburban life and the paranoia that can result from boredom, this underseen Joe Dante film continues to be charming and gain an increasingly large cult following.   ▶️Synopsis: While having a stay-at-home vacation, one uptight suburbanite and his paranoid neighbors become convinced the new family in their quiet community are Satanic murderers. ⏩⏩Discussions include: How a solid, witty script and stylish look create a relatable world where the comedy never wears out. On top of the expertly-curated ensemble cast, we’ll discuss what the actors bring to the film and how ad-libbing came in handy during a Hollywood writer’s strike. We’ll dig into the themes of THE ‘BURBS, go behind the scenes of filming and director Joe Dante’s career and passion for moviemaking. **Starring Tom Hanks, Carrie Fisher, Bruce Dern, Rick Ducommun, Wendy Schaal, Corey Feldman. Directed by Joe Dante.**   ▶️SCENE BREAKDOWN: Realism becomes another form of artificial style in THE ‘BURBS. Justin Hayward discusses how Joe Dante is able to create very calculated comedic moments within dramatic situations.   ▶️**PICKS OF THE WEEK** —Lindsay’s Pick: THE MAN WITH ONE RED SHOE (1985): In this silly spy thriller, a clueless musician gets caught up in a game of espionage, while also falling for a woman who is spying on him. **Starring Tom Hanks, Carrie Fisher, Jim Belushi, Lori Singer, Dabney Coleman. Directed by Stan Dragoti.**   —Justin’s Pick: MATINEE (1993): Harnessing the terror over impending nuclear war, a crafty filmmaker utilizes public fear to churn up excitement for the premiere of his newest, low-budget film, “Mant!” **Starring John Goodman, Cathy Moriarty, Kellie Martin. Directed by Joe Dante.**   ▶️MURRAYMOMENT: Diving into Billy’s Carl Spackler character in CADDYSHACK, and why he’d fit in perfectly with neighborhood boys in THE ‘BURBS.   ▶️FINAL THOUGHTS: A brief career retrospective of THE ‘BURBS co-star, Darla the Dog.   ▶️NEXT UP: CANDYMAN (1992)!

We're baaaaaack!  And as promised, our first ep back from the break is a three movie mystery series starring Life Goes On stars, Kellie Martin and Chad Lowe. We know...you can barely contain your excitement either!!Hailey Dean is an ex-DA turned therapist who sees no patients, but still moonlights hard core at the local police station in the very small town of ATLANTA. Her fiancé Will was tragically murdered in an alley 20 years ago and she was the target, a fact that has haunted her for all of these years. The killer was never found. It takes us halfway through the first movie, 2+2=Murder (yes, that's the title) to meet Clyde Bennett (Lowe) who was Will's annoyingly creepy old baseball team buddy. Apparently, college baseball teams have really elaborate reunions (seriously, balloons, slideshows, mailed invitations) to which Hailey has been invited. Most likely so Clyde can keep incessantly bringing up, as he does, how Will is dead, no one solved the murder and how remembering college baseball times is really important. It takes two more movies to get there - A Marriage Made for Murder and A Will to Kill (just cruel), but in the end we discover that Clyde is not exactly the unassuming, baseball-loving, awkwardly stalking, sharp dressing real estate developer that we had grown to tolerate in six hours of cinema. Nope, he's much, much more.  --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

Making Their (Hall)Mark: Danica McKellar and Candace Cameron Bure

In today’s competitive entertainment industry, what does it take to create popular, family-friendly content? MediaVillage Managing Editor, E.B. Moss, spoke to two big Crown Media stars - Danica McKellar, first known from her days as Winnie on The Wonder Years and later The West Wing, and Candace Cameron Bure, well-known for her role as D.J. Tanner on Full House, and currently Fuller House on Netflix, who discussed why the Hallmark brands resonate with each of them and how they’re lending their star power — and brain power — to causes and organizations. These show notes have been edited for clarity and length. Moss: Danica, thanks for doing the Insider Insights podcast with us. McKellar: My pleasure. I told Hallmark ‘anything you need, anything I can do’: there’s nothing else like their people and their programming -- wholesome entertainment that just makes you feel good. I know because I get all the emails and messages: people just love celebrating the seasons because Hallmark Channel does it so well...[Like my] most recent movie Very, Very Valentine, with Cameron Mathison. Moss: You’ve done seven Hallmark movies so far, and you also Executive Produced Campfire Kiss. (I know because our MediaVillage  journalist, Steve Gidlow, once called your co-star, Paul Greene, the Cary Grant of Hallmark Channel!) McKellar: Right. I played a math teacher. Probably no surprise to people that that would be the one I Exec Produce. Moss: We should explain about your background as a mathematician... McKellar: I got a degree in mathematics but then I missed acting. When I started on The West Wing I kept a website where I would answer people's math questions. Back in 2000 I got the opportunity to speak in front of Congress about the importance of women and mathematics ... I wrote my first math book in 2007 called “Math Doesn't Suck”, aimed at middle school girls. … So, it’s a math book but really a self-esteem building book helping girls embrace their smarts.... Now I've got the website, McKellar Math with books for younger kids as well. Last year, I had the opportunity to put a lot of this into Campfire Kiss, where my co-star's daughter in the movie was struggling in math, and I help her see how cool it is to be a smart girl. It was my dream come true to be able to get out my message about girls and math within a Hallmark movie. Moss: ...What do you think about how people are consuming video and television these days? McKellar: There are so many options depending on the person's lifestyle and what's most convenient! Every now and then my husband and I will watch Grace and Frankie on Netflix. It's also fun to see all my friends - Lacey Chabert and Candace Cameron Bure, Allison Sweeney, Kellie Martin - on Hallmark, especially at Christmas time.... Candace Cameron Bure Moss: Candace, after some 20 movies with Hallmark do you have a favorite aspect or movie? Cameron Bure: I really enjoy producing. I've always had input in all the scripts that I've done, but also brought some to the table. One of my movies, Just the Way You Are, was loosely based on my own life and from my book, “Balancing It All”. That, actually, is my all-time favorite movie that I was able to do with Hallmark Channel. Moss: Why was Hallmark the right environment for that? Cameron Bure: Hallmark movies always have a romantic element. ...But I’ve done so many it’s important to do ones that feel a little different but still stay within the themes of what their movies represent. So, I wanted to show a marriage that wasn't unhappy, but one that just kind of lost sight of one another because of living life and kids… I wanted to tell that story of rekindling a marriage. Moss: In addition to the movies, and Fuller House, you’ve still found time for your cause related work. Can you speak to some of the organizations you get behind, like skip1.org? Cameron Bure: Thanks for bringing up Skip1. We feed people all over the world and also build kitchens in schools in impoverished countries ...and the homeless community in the United States. The whole concept is that it's pretty easy for those of us that have much to skip something today and feed someone instead. Could you skip a carwash or even your lunch and donate that amount so someone else can eat? I also am very passionate about Compassion International which is more of a sponsorship program for children in impoverished countries. Moss: You’re known as a person of deep faith…Through that lens, does appearing on Hallmark networks have a different sense of purpose for you? Cameron Bure: Everything that I've done I've carefully chosen -- which networks and what organizations I want to be a part of -- because I am deeply rooted in my faith. That's why I partnered with Hallmark Channel; they represent the values that I've been consistent with in my life. I want people to know that if they see my name … they know it's going to be honest and truthful and it comes with values and family values.

If you have been watching TV — like, at all — since the 1990s, you've probably seen (and loved) Kellie Martin in something. After beginning her career as a child in the '80s, she landed the role of Becca on the critically acclaimed family drama Life Goes On, a role that would eventually earn her an Emmy nomination. But her career is far more than that one role. She was part of one of the most terrifying moments in ER history. She worked with Lucille Ball. She was a voice in The Goofy Movie, for goodness sakes. Even as she's moved into adult parts, she's continued to work frequently, in everything from Mad Men to Hallmark movies. And now, she's one part of TBS's new, very broad comedy, The Guest Book. But look, Todd just wanted to talk to Kellie because his 10-year-old, Life Goes On-loving self wouldn't forgive himself if he didn't. They discuss everything from how she managed to keep from falling into the pitfalls that consume so many child actors, to how she balances her work and her many other pursuits, to her long friendship with Life Goes On co-star Patti LuPone. Kellie's a great storyteller — and she has many great stories to tell. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
