Spring blooms in NYC, and Opie Radio at Gebhards delivers a chaotic, laugh-packed episode! The crew kicks off with conspiracies about the Pope’s “unalived” Easter Monday exit, a blessed Lamborghini for Pope John Paul II, and Jim Morrison hiding in Syracuse. They dive into Florida Man Games with lawnmower racing, family scandals, and barfing on JetBlue. Ron takes over with a freezing Coney Island beach tale, a dubious sexual harassment counselor claim, and rants on food dyes and declining birth rates. A $100 saltine-eating challenge ends in a dusty disaster, while the street cam spots Yoko Ono (maybe). For their FRED Talks, Jose talked about how virtual masses just aren't the same as attending in person, and Joel used his time to call out Andrew Sullivan for criticizing the 1619 Project, though he gave him credit for calling out the left on the Tara Reade scandal. In the main segment, Jose and Joel were joined by Henry Houston for a lively conversation. They started the conversation by going through some of Jose's favorite articles written by Henry: Country Grammar, in which Henry was able to meet with Garth and fulfill his childhood dream; Shatner: The Final Frontier, in which Henry recalls his interview with William Shatner; and Nerd Bashing Time, in which he interviews the MAGA-hat-wearing MMA fighter Colby Covington. From there, we talked about whether Star Trek or Star Wars was better, what it's like to get hate mail, journalistic standards, and the reaction to Oregon's Coronavirus health guidelines. It's a great discussion about the real work that journalists do to bring citizens independent news. In the final segment, Jose talked about how he has been watching a YouTube show called Hiking With Kevin, whereas Joel talked about a New Yorker piece about Greenwich Republicans who support Trump, the Michael Jordan docu-series entitled The Last Dance, and a rapper from Oxnard named Anderson Paak. Herlinda Heras and Mark Carpenter have guests from The Sonoma-Marin Fair, with food and beer pairings to discover. The second day of the Sonoma-Marin fair in Petaluma is today. It's a great little fair with a hometown feel. Since Petaluma is known for beer, they have a homebrew competition. Cristy from the Sonoma-Marin Fair has brought fair food for some pairings of beer with fair food. It starts with corn dogs and ends with funnel cakes, with everything in between, like pulled pork, tri-tip, chicken kebob and all the fixins. They are all from concessionaires at the fair. Bob Peek is in, he used to own The Beverage People. He probably either taught all the home brewers or they took his class or bought equipment from him. Lagunitas is a major sponsor of the fair. Herlinda mentions that Golden State Cider is also there, also Ace Cider. Cider and BBQ go very well together. A sweet tropical stout beer goes well with spicy food. The Kiwanas Club is a sponsor that takes care of beer and wine. Herlinda finds that the Lagunitas IPA goes well with a corn dog. "We are selflessly devoting ourselves to this research for the benefit of the community. I hope you all appreciate that, as we are sitting here eating and drinking and enjoying ourselves, we're doing it for you!" --Pete Foppiano Mark remembers Santa Rosa Brewing Company and its brewer Tim O'Day. He came from Britain and worked there for five years. They opened in 1993 and worked until 1998 and they won a gold medal during that time. The Chicken Kebob comes from Jim's Smokehouse Barbeque. It has peppers and onions and it's huge. This may not be the largest fair on the map but the people like it because it's a nice size and has one admission ticket for unlimited rides. This is great for families with small children who like to take rides over and over again. Funnel Express Funnel Cakes will donate their wares for the funnel cake eating contest. Herlinda has one with Nutella, strawberry and vanilla custard, with some Lagunitas Little Sumpin' on the side. The Sonoma-Marin Fair Homebrew Contest attracts a lot of entrants and attention from beer fans all over. Mark tells how Copper was a metal that brewers could work with, before the age of stainless steel. Anchor Brewing had its original copper kettles but copper wears out so instead of replacing with stainless steel they kept it in copper. Mark mentions the animals at the fair, rabbits, chickens, sheep, pigs, etc. Sarah mentions that they also have extensive educational materials on display with big screens. The 4H and FFA kids take great care with their animals and caring for them. They also have a petting zoo and a humane society cuddle station where you can also adopt a pet.

Fred Abercrombie is in, from Lagunitas. Ron Lindenbusch was also going to come in for today's show but he is not available, as Herlinda Heras explains, do to some issues with his reopening of one of Steve Jaxon's favorite local venues, the old Hopland Taproom. Today they will talk about an event in Petaluma to be held next weekend, the 60th Annual Bill Soberanes Memorial Petaluma Whiskerino. Here is the event's Facebook page, log on to FB to access it. Bill Soberanes was a longtime journalist who covered Petaluma in the local press and who was beloved by all the people whose lives he touched. He called himself a Peopleologist. Herlinda remembers serving him beer years ago. The Petaluma Whiskerino, where men come to show off beards, sideburns, goatee, moustache, business beards, etc. Lagunitas is a sponsor. There are prizes, a free photo booth and then groups come onto stage for judging. Roy Miller, an attorney from Santa Rosa, is also in the studio for today's show. The event is Saturday Oct. 6 at 3pm at the Phoenix Theater in Petaluma. There is even a kids' category and a ladies' category, so there are a lot of ways for people to take part. There is also a costume category, a memorial for Justin Bill Hunter, who would always come in costume. There is an after-party sponsored by Lagunitas. Fred Abercrombie and his wife took over the event's organization about 11 years ago. He is the MC and she manages PR. Lagunitas has sponsored it for almost a decade, since he has been working there. Fred has been the creative director at Lagunitas for about five years. Herlinda would like to have him back to talk about the label regulations that include font size and allowed words, in the regulations over alcohol. Fred Abercrombie brought their hop water. They also make a cannabis-infused hop water, but it's not there today. This is just sparkling water and hops. Herlinda says it's refreshing. She also mentions a Super Cluster Ale from Lagunitas that she is having. Herlinda says that when they are tasting beers in competitions, they often use Lagunitas IPA as a flavor baseline for judging the other beers. Fred says that every category has its own 1st, 2nd and 3rd award, then there is an overall award, the coveted Golden Chicken, which goes to the best contestant all around. There is one contestant who does an "octobeard" which is a long beard split into eight tentacles. The Wrist Wrestling competition once reached ABC's Wide World of Sports. Petaluma also had an Ugliest Dog competition which put the town on the map.

“Who touches this touches a man. Incredibly moving, risk-taking, original, and deep. I was in tears a number of times while reading it. Magnificent.” - Barry Spacks Teddy Macker is a guileless poet who incarnates the beauty and struggle of both the internal and external landscapes of this world we share. I would be lying if I didn’t say that one of my new life goals is buy Teddy a Lagunitas IPA and shoot the bull on all of life’s matter late into the evening. Macker is quick to laugh, invoke the wisdom of elders, and see the truth in and lurking behind boulders and cottonwood trees.  His book of poetry, This World, is masterful. Like Barry Spacks' words regarding (mentioned above) This World, tears will find you as you saunter through Macker’s poetry, and you will find yourself returning to it time and again. In this conversation, Teddy and I talk about Barry Spacks’ impact on him, how he holds the sacred and the sensual hand in hand, we bond over our mutual love for the music of Greg Brown, and of course, we are privileged with Teddy reading us some of his poems from This World. You can learn more about Teddy by reading This World. (Please excuse the number of links to purchase This World, I am just such a big admirer of this book and man that I think everyone should have a copy. Buy yours here.)

Welcome back to another fantabulous episode of Snooze & Booze! Currently on episode numero 62, this show is actually a blend of two sets of guests. Firstly we welcome Jen back once again along side another great band that she manages by the name of Mother Rose. They talk about touring, upcoming plans to record, and anything else that is fueled by chasing Southern Comfort swigs with Lagunitas IPA. Be sure to check them out! You can find them on just about any social network around, although I don't think they've made it to Jewcier.com or Farmer's Only just yet so don't hold your breath. On the second portion of the show we welcome back Elliot and Christian once again for what was actually a spur of the moment recording that yielded a pretty good discussion on stuff, stuff, and more stuff. So if you'd like to hear about all this... stuff... you know what to do. Cheers!

00:00:00 - Turns out Australia and Antarctica have more in common than just being giant deserts. A new study in Nature Geoscience reports that Antarctica is stealing Australia's moisture and it's all humanity's fault! C'mon Southern Hemisphere, can't you guys just all get along? 00:13:35 - This week Patrick is supping a grape fruit from New Zealand, Ryan kicks back a Fosters to then transition into a relatively palatable Harpoon Celtic Ale and Charlie requests sponsorship from his old standby, the Lagunitas IPA. 00:18:41 - Jacob jumps in mid-transition to help Ryan announce the upcoming Florida Science... sort of meetup. Details at the Paleocave blog! 00:21:27 - Trailer Trash Talks finds itself in a weird yet familiar place as the Paleopals discuss the 4th installment of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, On Stranger Tides. 00:30:28 - The pesky paleontologists have discovered a couple of new marsupials down in Aus. The crazy part is the convergent angle evolution between these basal mammals and some modern lizards. When you want to eat snails, you'll evolve just about anything. 00:39:20 - PaleoPOWs are a lot like Australia, most people never both to go there, and most who do get burned. Charlie has an e-mail from Jesse at NYU who informs the Paleopals about other mammals with only one set of chompers. Ryan has a donation from Chad G. who suggests a brewery Ryan has preemptively partaken of. Also, Ryan is very awkward with issues of money, let's not ask him to do this ever again, agreed? Finally, Patrick has an apologetic and follicular Brachiolope from Denis that can be seen at the appropriately named Brachiolope Gallery. Thanks for listening. A blog exists! It's named the Paleocave Blog. Y'know, just in case.
