Battles to Save World's Greatest Creatures. The host for this show is Mihaela Stoops. The guest is Maribeth Theisen. Maribeth Theisen, a Maui psychotherapist that has been fascinated by wildlife since childhood, introduces us to the world of conservation efforts and its challenges, particularly with rhinoceros and cheetahs. Some may roll their eyes at the suggestion to read a book on conservation, but Lawrence Anthony's book reads like a thriller, with many ups and downs and unexpected situations; one enjoys the descriptions of the natural beauty of Africa, the animals and their connection to humans, as well as the history and political conflicts in several African countries. One learns how to navigate the labyrinth of the bureaucracy related to conservation efforts. But more importantly, one can only be inspired to do more, after reading about the dedication of a small group of people to save the last of a species. This episode covers great books on the topics of animals and then actors: Wild Ones by Jon Mooallem, The Tiger by John Vaillant, The Last Rhino by Lawrence Anthony, Born Standing Up by Steve Martin, and Paul and Me by A.E. Hotchner.
In this very first episode of Feel Good Friday, Steve tells the remarkable true story of the Elephant Whisperer, Lawrence Anthony. Anthony, a conservationist, environmentalist and best selling author, was head of conservation at the Thula Thula animal reserve in Zululand, South Africa. Anthony was known for his unique ability to communicate and calm elephants that had experienced trauma. Lawrence ended up taking in a herd of "troubled" elephants who hated humans due to abuse and killings of members of their herd by humans. He quickly learned that earning the trust of these elephants was going to be next to impossible. But as you'll learn in this story, over time, Lawrence developed a bond with the elephants, earned their trust and earned their friendship. Years later, Lawrence suddenly passed away. To their astonishment, the family witnessed the elephants showing up at their property, after walking 12 hours in the bush, and holding a vigil for Lawrence, their old friend. The elephants never forgot. How did the elephants know he had died? Perhaps they are reminding us that we all truly are connected. To stay connected with Better Place Project and for updates and behind the scenes info, please follow us on social media:Instagram: @BetterPlaceProjTo follow Steve & Erin on Instagram:@SteveNorrisOfficial@ErinorrisFacebook: Facebook.com/BetterPlaceProjectPodcastEmail: BetterPlaceProjectPodcast@gmail.com
Estoy convencida de que todas las especies vivas intentan comunicarse entre sí y con nosotros. Si las escucháramos, aprenderíamos mucho.
The story of Lawrence Anthony who saved a herd of wild Elephants on his preserve in South Africa and became connected in a profound way. After his sudden death from a heart attack, the elephants who were miles away sensed it and traveled 12 hours to his home to mourn him and stayed with him for 2 days. This is a story that will touch hearts and minds and uncover a deep truth about the connectedness of consciousness with all living things.
Hosts Ali & Lawrence Anthony untangle the messiness of coming out. For those of us that are “out" we know that process can be painful, anxiety inducing and scary all at once. In this episode we are getting down to the bottom of our coming out experience was like with our friends, family, at school and share our coming out stories. Queer, and POC?

For episode 21 of Speak From the Body, I decided I’d record a solo episode. When I first thought about creating a podcast, I meant to have a mix of conversations with experts and then one with just me from time to time. Today I’d like to talk about loss. For as long as I can remember, I’ve been interested in the experiences that connect us as human beings. The things that go beyond the everyday “I’m fine, how are you” level of interaction. I’m not a fan of small talk, and am much more interested in the deep and meaningful conversations about what really matters and gives our lives meaning. Loss is a topic that I’ve studied over the years. Noone gets to experience life without some form of loss. It comes in the form of bereavement, or breakup. Fertility issues, miscarriage. Redundancy. Loss of identity. A move to a new country. When we experience challenges such as heartbreak or loss, our bodies rarely get the space to process what has happened. We might rush ourselves to ‘get on with it’ and think we have bounced back before we have. Or we might ignore what has happened because it’s just too painful to address it. Even though I have a deep respect for talking therapies, there are some things that are beyond words. Trauma is held in the body. You can’t just talk your way out of it. The mind and body are not really separated, yet we see a talking therapist for the head and a body practitioner for our physical selves. When things are held in the body and not released, they become an emotional scar, where layers of tension build up around it. This blocks the life force. It can show up as deep tiredness or feeling like life isn’t in flow. I’ve frequently experienced in clinic when someone has come in for treatment to a sore neck or back, but I am drawn to a deeper held tension, that feels as if it’s the real thing to work on. When something is held in the body, we are held back from expressing our most true and vital self. I grew up in an extended family, which meant that at different times of my life, I had my grandmothers, a grandfather, elderly uncle and cousins living with us. Over the years, we had 4 deaths in our household. I was 14 my grandmother died. It was 13 days before a close family wedding. In our culture, you don’t have a celebration less than 2 weeks after a sad occasion, but in this situation everything was organised and we decided to go ahead with it. I used to share a room with my Grandmother, and after she died, I experienced terrible insomnia. I’d line up piles of books by my bedside to read in the middle of the night when I couldn’t sleep. I couldn’t explain to anyone what was affecting me, and the only way I could find comfort was to give up and go to the safety of my mum and dad’s bed in the middle of the night. When I first became an osteopath I treated many elderly people (very different from my practice now where I rarely see anyone over 65). Once, an elderly man came in for a session with an excruciating pain by his shoulder-blade. The pain was etched on his face and he couldn’t eat or sleep or move because of this pain. It was a real challenge to treat him. I was recently qualified and didn’t know how to help him lie comfortably or how to be gentle enough so that I didn’t hurt him. It was the first time I treated him, but I’d met him before as he would always be with his wife when she came for treatment. I asked after his wife. She was such a jolly, warm lady, the kind that lifted your spirits when you were flagging on a hectic day. He let out a sound that was a mangled, primal scream/ cry. He told me that she had died. Totally out of the blue. I have no idea how long they had been together but couples from that era tended to marry young and lead long, fruitful decades. He literally carried the pain of his broken heart. And being someone from that generation, it wasn’t natural to talk about his feelings, but his body was speaking volumes. I still feel an ache when I think of the intensity of his sorrow. It was such a lesson in how the body tells our stories. And how as a practitioner, it’s not about the fancy bells-and-whistle techniques but really about holding compassionate space so that the body can find its own breath. Nearly 18 years ago I had a cough that was so aggressive that I was sick on a daily basis. At the time I worked in a small office at a publishing company and had to run down 2 flights of stairs to throw up in the loo. It became such a normal thing for me to cough and cough and run downstairs and throw up. I can’t remember what else I tried but I eventually ended up at a low-cost homeopathic clinic near my work. In the consultation, she asked about recent events. A loved one had died out of the blue. She linked the cough to my grief and shock and treated me with an intense dose of arnica. The cough eased and what’s interesting is that I still get a similar cough in March each year, nearly 18 later. Elephants are my favourite animal. I love their nobility, their sensitivity and their sense of community. There’s a powerful story of elephants and grief. If you haven’t already read it, there’s a book I love called The Elephant Whisperer by Lawrence Anthony. It’s the true story of a conservationist, and how he forms a beautiful relationship with a herd of wild elephants who were once violent and traumatised. Over time Anthony managed to calm the elephants and get to know them. When he died, two herds of elephants made their way in slow procession for 12 hours until they reached the house of Lawrence, the man who had saved their lives. They came to say goodbye to the man they loved, who had saved them from being killed. What’s incredible is that they hadn’t been by the house in over 18 months, but they just knew to come and say goodbye. Grief can show up as holding of shock in the diaphragm/ solar plexus and caving in of the sternum and chest, the area of the heart centre, that relates to the heavy heart that people talk about. It can show up in the upper back , the area that I liken to the messy cupboard where we chuck stuff without looking, so that it becomes disordered and chaotic. In zero balancing, the energy in the body is evaluated rather than diagnosed (which I describe as a more non-judgemental way of listening with the hands). There’s a particular feeling of grief energy that can be felt in the upper ribs, especially around the heart and lungs. It feels dull and empty, with a lack of spring, like a balloon that’s had the air sucked out of it. It’s not possible to go through life without having some kind of loss. It’s part of the human experience and yet it can still be taboo, or not talked about. Sometimes it’s too much to talk about or make sense of, but the body can find ways to express the sense of loss. For anyone experiencing loss and grief, I don’t think there’s any one way to move through it. Try to listen to what you need, and that may change from day to day and season to season. Be in nature, especially around old trees when you feel ungrounded or moving water when you need to release emotions. Have time for yourself if that helps you. Be around the kind of company that makes you feel good. The kind of people you can just be with. Give yourself some regular space to feel your feelings. Get rid of any commitments you don’t have to keep Practice self-care so that you can keep the basics up, such as eating and sleeping. I’d like to read a letter to the singer Nick Cave and his reply. Cynthia writes to Nick Cave I have experienced the death of my father, my sister, and my first love in the past few years and feel that I have some communication with them, mostly through dreams. They are helping me. Are you and Susie feeling that your son Arthur is with you and communicating in some way? Dear Cynthia, This is a very beautiful question and I am grateful that you have asked it. It seems to me, that if we love, we grieve. That’s the deal. That’s the pact. Grief and love are forever intertwined. Grief is the terrible reminder of the depths of our love and, like love, grief is non-negotiable. There is a vastness to grief that overwhelms our minuscule selves. We are tiny, trembling clusters of atoms subsumed within grief’s awesome presence. It occupies the core of our being and extends through our fingers to the limits of the universe. Within that whirling gyre all manner of madnesses exist; ghosts and spirits and dream visitations, and everything else that we, in our anguish, will into existence. These are precious gifts that are as valid and as real as we need them to be. They are the spirit guides that lead us out of the darkness. I feel the presence of my son, all around, but he may not be there. I hear him talk to me, parent me, guide me, though he may not be there. He visits Susie in her sleep regularly, speaks to her, comforts her, but he may not be there. Dread grief trails bright phantoms in its wake. These spirits are ideas, essentially. They are our stunned imaginations reawakening after the calamity. Like ideas, these spirits speak of possibility. Follow your ideas, because on the other side of the idea is change and growth and redemption. Create your spirits. Call to them. Will them alive. Speak to them. It is their impossible and ghostly hands that draw us back to the world from which we were jettisoned; better now and unimaginably changed. With love, Nick. I run a workshop twice a year called Moving Through Loss, where we use gentle breath work, body-led movement and guided relaxation. If you’d like to come to a safe space to feel and move through loss, feel free to get in touch and come along. https://www.avni-touch.com/moving-through-loss
Gorgeous Lives: Francoise Malby Anthony & Katja Willemsen, An Elephant In My Kitchen When Francoise Malby refused to share a taxi on a bone-chilling day in London with a scruffy, bearded man, it was the very last time she said no to future husband Lawrence Anthony. So when he said they should buy a game reserve in the Kwa-Zulu-Natal area of South Africa and start conservation work, Francoise said yes. When they received a call asking if they would take a herd of troubled and traumatised and therefore dangerous elephants, they said yes and so started the passionate partnership and adventure of their lives. When Lawrence died suddenly, Francoise was thrown into the deep end of managing all aspects of the game reserve and lodge and protecting her family of friends, colleagues and most importantly the wild animals who call Thula Thula home. www.thulathula.com #AnElephantInMyKitchen #GorgeousEscapes #RadioGorgeous
Aired Wednesday, 11 April 2018 at 4:00 PM EST / 1:00 PM PSTElephant In My Kitchen with Francoise Malby AnthonyFrancoise joins me on the show today from South Africa. We will talk about her continued efforts at Thula Thula and her upcoming book and of course the elephants!Francoise was born in the south of France and after her studies in business administration at the University of Montpellier lived in Italy, Venezuela, London and the USA before moving to Paris in 1981. Francoise worked as head of the international department of a Chamber of Commerce in the north of France until she met her future husband Lawrence Anthony in London in January 1987 and they moved to South Africa in December 1987. Lawrence and Francoise were based in Durban, Kwa Zulu Natal. In 1998, Lawrence and Francoise bought a rundown hunting game reserve in the heart of Zululand. After Lawrence wrote the best seller “The Elephant Whisperer” in 2010, the emotional story of how he saved a herd of wild elephants from death by rescuing them at Thula Thula Game reserve and bringing trust into humans for the first time, he became recognised as an international best-selling author and conservationist.Lawrence passed away on the 2nd of March 2012 from a heart attack. Francoise carries on his conservation work at Thula Thula game reserve as well as the running of both lodges. In August 2012 she created the Thula Thula Rhino Fund, after one of her orphan rhinos were shot at by poachers just 2 weeks after Lawrence passed. The Rhino Fund initiated several projects aimed at the protection of the rhinos and the creation of a Rhino rehabilitation centre for rhinos who have been orphaned from poaching. In 2016, Francoise founded the South African Conservation Fund, Thula Thula non-profit organisation, which incorporated the Rhino fund and wildlife protection actions, as well other conservation projects as the expansion of Thula Thula for the elephant habitat, as the herd from seven elephants on their arrival in 1999 is now twenty nine and they are in great need of additional space, the Thula Thula Wildlife rehabilitation centre where orphans or wounded wildlife is being taken care of before being rehabilitated into the wild where they belong, and the Thula Thula Volunteers Academy, where people from all over the world come to work and be educated into the world of conservation in an African game reserve. The volunteers Camp academy will open on the 1st of July 2018.Francoise runs Thula Thula with her team of 50 loyal employees. As hunting is not permitted, all funds for conservation are generated by the two safari lodges at Thula Thula that Francoise created in 2000 and 2006. These lodges welcome international guests for eco and photo safaris. Thula Thula also relies on the generosity of donors to the South African Conservation Fund.Francoise book AN ELEPHANT IN MY KITCHEN, the sequel of THE ELEPHANT WHISPERER by Lawrence Anthony, will come out on the 26th of July in the UK, Australia, India and New Zealand and Canada, on the first week of September in South Africa, and 1st of November in the US.Lawrence’s legacy lives on thanks to the passion for the conservation of wildlife and nature he instilled in all of us and this is what we all live for here at Thula Thula.Website: http://thulathula.comFacebook Page: https://www.facebook.com/francoise.thulathula
Welcome to Stellar Life podcast! I’m your host, Stephan Spencer. My wife Orion and I are celebrating her 100th episode by switching things up. Orion will be my guest, and I’ll interview her so you can hear more of her incredible wisdom. She's a transformation coach, a love and relationship expert, and an international speaker who helps her clients (and listeners) unleash their feminine power. In other words, if you want to transform your relationship or find your soulmate, she’s the woman for you! Connect With Orion: orion@orionsmethod.com Orion’s Method @OrionTalmay on Twitter Orion Talmay on LinkedIn Orion Talmay on Facebook The Mission Log: [02:15] - Orion starts things off by talking about the mastermind she recently attended, and shares one powerful takeaway she got from the event. [05:42] - Especially for entrepreneurs, it’s easy to get distracted with things like working on a website rather than figuratively “pressing the gas pedal,” Orion explains. [07:12] - Several people have been recommending that Stephan read the book The ONE Thing by Gary Keller. Orion then talks about being in the world of action, which Stephan relates to Kabbalah. [09:21] - Orion quotes Dr. Wayne Dyer, pointing out that we are spiritual beings having a human experience. This means we need to obey the laws of the universe, including the law of action. [12:38] - Stephan elaborates on what Orion has been saying, pointing out that we are all storytellers and meaning-makers. [13:39] - Orion discusses the Law of Attraction and Abraham-Hicks, as well as her time in Japan. [17:26] - When Stephan first heard Orion talk about Abraham-Hicks, he was skeptical. He engaged in the willing suspension of disbelief, found that the message served him, and has become a real fan. [20:35] - “Worry is praying for the things you don’t want,” Orion says, quoting one of her guests. She then offers a recommendation on a way to make yourself (and those around you) happier. [23:32] - Orion expands on the concept of the frowny face she has just been talking about. [26:32] - When you change your mindset, you change everything, Stephan points out. He then explains that he didn’t discover Tony Robbins until he was almost 40. [28:57] - Orion discusses the importance of taking care of yourself, using the analogy of putting on your own oxygen mask first. [32:03] - Stephan recently learned that Oprah takes daily bubble baths to destress, and Jennifer Aniston’s morning ritual includes meditation. Orion then shares her own morning ritual. [34:56] - How does Stephan exercise self-care throughout the day? [36:04] - Orion talks about some of the things she does to wrap up her day. She and Stephan then talks about some of their rituals together. [40:09] - We move onto the topic of nutrition, with Orion pointing out that your body craves what is in your bloodstream. [41:54] - What can you do to improve your nutrition? [42:32] - Stephan steps in to talk about your microbiome. He explains that there are more cells within your body belonging to other entities (like bacteria) than belonging to you. Orion then recommends probiotics and enzymes. [46:18] - We learn about Restore, which Orion has started taking. [48:31] - From nutrition, we move onto the topic of Orion’s community and her 7-day challenge. This challenge will be launched just before Valentine’s Day. [51:22] - Orion has mentioned having proof that her challenge is successful; what is this proof? She then discusses whether the challenge will also be useful for women who are in relationships, or whether it’s just for single women.
