An Opera Singer and a Comedian Walk Into a Bar is a new segment of the Artists ont he Verge podcast. It features your host, opera-singer-turned-experimental-performer Ema Katrovas, talking to comedian-and-TV-writer turned-novelist Nicholas Anthony. They'll be having conversations from across the high/low art divide with the goal of being honest about what a life centring art - high or low - actually looks like. In this first episode, Nick and Ema end up talking about an artist's education and the different forms it takes on the high and low part of the spectrum. They also talk about the fertile soil which was the open mic at Acme, a Minneapolis-based club where Nick did stand up for the first time, do a little detour on the matriarchs in Ema's family and living under communism, and talk about how sometimes it's necessary to totally reinvent yourself - as Nick and Ema have both done, on some level. It's been a sad state of affairs for consumer companies not named TikTok. Poparazzi just shut down. (At least some of the team went to Instagram.) Popshop is struggling. The venture capital firm Benchmark helped establish both companies as consumer startups to watch by leading their Series A rounds. Sarah Tavel, who led the investment in Poparazzi and has worked closely with Popshop, agreed to come on the Newcomer podcast to talk about the brutal state of consumer startups. “Our deep belief at Benchmark is that our job is not to predict the future, but to try as best we can to see the present clearly,” Tavel told me.Of course, it's not just Benchmark's once high-flying startups that are reeling. Andreessen Horowitz audio company Clubhouse laid off more than half of its employees. Hype for the photo company BeReal seems to be dying down. (Searches for the company's name on Google are at less than half their peak.) “It is a really tough environment right now to build that type of company,” Tavel said about startups building for consumers. “It's always been difficult, but the level of difficulty has been turned all the way on. Because right now, anybody building something in consumer has to compete with the most addictive consumer format that we've ever had — which is short video.”Tavel, who co-led an early investment in Pinterest and then became the company's first product manager, talked through some of the most promising opportunities in startups. Artificial intelligence seems poised to create new consumer startups. Tavel flagged the legal artificial intelligence company EvenUp, which just raised at a $350 million valuation from Bessemer, as one such promising startup. I marveled at the bootstrapped rise of Midjourney. But, of course, many generative AI startups, especially ones building foundation models, are raising such large rounds that it can be difficult for a firm like Benchmark to rationalize an investment. We also talked about one of Tavel's most successful investments at Benchmark, Chainalysis. The blockchain data company raised $170 million at $8.6 billion last year. The New York Times wrote a glowing profile of the company last month. Tavel, who doesn't like to announce her startup investments, revealed that she has secretly invested in an unannounced NFT company.“Crypto is a bad word now,” Tavel told me. “It's really hard to train consumers to trust something again — once a consumer has made a first impression. It's much easier to teach a user a first impression than to rewrite that first impression.”Finally, I asked Tavel to give us a peek behind the curtain at Benchmark. Fortune's Jessica Mathews recently interviewed Benchmark's Bill Gurley about his decision to step back.Mathews wrote:“The venture business, if you want to be at the top, requires insane, remarkable hustle… You have to live in fear that the next Google is going to get funded by a firm that's not yours,” he says. “Either you're in there rowing as hard as you can, because we're all a team, or you're not.”That said, he still has strong instincts about the future of tech. “If I were still active as a venture capitalist, I'd be looking at a lot of the vertical applications of A.I. I look at the coding stuff, and it's insane… If you're not using it, I think you're probably writing your own death certificate as a programmer, because people are going to be so much more efficient. And the question is: What are other applications that have that kind of productivity boost or lift, and I think people are trying to figure that out.”But in the end, it was a book by Steve Martin, Born Standing Up, that helped convince Gurley it was time to step back. “One day, [Martin] is in Vegas and he comes out, and the top row is empty, the first time he's ever seen the top row empty. He quits the next day—never does standup again. And then he goes off and he does his banjo and his theater and his acting.… Like I said, I don't think I ever played the stage, so I'd rather not say I'm the same. It influenced me. That notion influenced me.”Today, the Benchmark partnership is made up of Tavel, Peter Fenton, Eric Vishria, Chetan Puttagunta, and Miles Grimshaw. Tavel said about the firm, “We've always had a pretty simple idea, which is that there's this creative destruction.”“Once you start — there's no training wheels. So you're thrown into the deep end. You're an equal partner and you're expected to be 100% until the minute that you retire,” Tavel said. “And when you have an equal partnership, it kind of pushes you in the direction of just recognizing — as Bill said in that interview — the hustle may not be in you anymore. And if you feel that way, then the model — as was set up by the founders — is such that it's time to raise your hand and move on.”Of course, my understanding is that partners like Gurley, Matt Cohler, and Mitch Lasky remain fairly heavily involved at Benchmark even so. “It's like an affliction. The reason they're here in the first place was because the curiosity and competitiveness and the drive for learning and relevance, being in the mix, that never leaves you,” Tavel said. “They are a significant portion of our LP base, they're still there on Mondays, and I'm texting all of them all the time.”Find the Podcast Get full access to Newcomer at www.newcomer.co/subscribe

Feeling fulfilled and passionate about our work comes from having autonomy, competence, and relatedness.  So what do those three terms mean and how can you achieve them? ----------------------------------------------- Welcome to Ever Better Today: the daily podcast for creating your optimal business, career, or overall life in ten minutes or less. I'm Lisa Conners Vogt, Executive and Leadership Coach and founder of Ever Better Coaching and Consulting. Let's jump in! ---------------------------------------------- Cal Newport talks about Self-Determination Theory (SDT) in his book “So Good They Can't Ignore You”. SDT is actually composed of six mini-theories and one of them is Basic Psychological Needs Theory. To learn more, go to selfdeterminationtheory.org/theory Basic Psychological Needs Theory Psychological well-being and optimal functioning are a result of autonomy, competence, and relatedness. Autonomy This is the feeling that you have control over your day and that your work is important and meaningful. Don't expect this in the early days of your career. Strive for a blend of autonomy and guidance by finding mentors and role models to help you navigate your profession. As you gain experience, you'll enjoy more autonomy than you've earned.  Competence There are four levels of competence. As your skills and awareness develop, you'll move through the phases of: Unconscious incompetence; conscious incompetence; conscious competence; and unconscious competence. Learn more about this model by listening to Episode 7 of Ever Better Today. Relatedness This is the feeling of connection to other people. You have to feel a connection in order to feel very engaged and passionate about your job and mission-driven. Do you focus on the value you're offering in your job? Or are you thinking more about “what's in it for me”? These are two very different mindsets that create vastly different outcomes. ----------------------------------------------- In chapter four of Cal Newport's book entitled “So Good They Can't Ignore You”, he describes two different approaches to thinking about work - a craftsman mindset versus a passion mindset. In Steve Martin's book, Born Standing Up, he describes his constant work to craft better performances. His passion for the work grew with his expertise and accolades. Crafters mindset & Entrepreneur mindset Crafters and entrepreneurs focus on the value they are producing for someone else. Entrepreneurs collect information, interpret it in their own way, and create something transformational for the world to consume. They take in information, apply their interpretation and create something new - transformation.  Passion mindset vs Employee Mindset In the employee mindset, individuals are focused on how their jobs make them feel and what they're getting out of their jobs rather than emphasizing the contribution, transformation, and advancement of others. This revolves around the “what's in it for me?” culture. Real-life examples following information, interpretation, and transformation flow… Steve Martin took information about magic tricks, comedy, entertainment at Disney, and quirky personalities. He interpreted all this information in his own way and created an act that only he could do. He made an artform that entertained his audiences and shifted comedy forever.  With this podcast, I'm interpreting information from books, my professional and personal experiences, and my education and transforming it into podcasts. My hope is that these podcasts help you and others to elevate their businesses, careers, and overall lives.   Episodes 99, 100, 101, 102, and 103 describe just some of the takeaways from So Good They Can't Ignore You and Born Standing Up. Do you pursue your passion or get so good at something that it becomes a passion?  In the book, So Good They Can't Ignore You, Cal Newport makes the case that single-mindedly pursuing your passion can create frustration and a chaotic career. Listen to learn more! ----------------------------------------------- Here's what you can do to create a career or business that you're passionate about without creating chaos… Figure out what you're interested in, that you can get paid for, and that you enjoy doing. Then get great at that!  Get that job or start a business that you can feel good about doing on a day-to-day basis. Get started! As you learn more and get better at what you're doing, it may very likely become a passion.  Learn what you need to know, learn the basics, and figure out ways to not succeed. Mistakes are a great way to learn!  Build your network. Meet people in that industry and people who are engaged in similar work or business. Consider… Do you know someone who pursued something and it grew into a passion? What steps did they take to succeed? This episode is inspired by two books, So Good They Can't Ignore You by Cal Newport and Born Standing Up by Steve Martin.  If you're ready to achieve wild success in anything you do, you need to become great at it.  This takes time, dedication, and a willingness to be uncomfortable.  Overnight success rarely happens. And when it does, it's not sustainable. --------------------------------------------- Here's how Steve Martin became so good… He honed his magic and entertainment skills in a variety of “unglamorous” jobs.  He started performing for very small audiences and learned from negative feedback. He refused to give up and continued to hone his skills as a stand-up comedian. He went on tour at colleges and universities which led him to perform on much bigger stages, stadiums, and venues.  He recognized that performing in very large venues left him empty and unsatisfied because his passion was to connect with his audience.   As a comedian, he created transferrable skills that he applied to acting, producing and music.   When he reached financial success he became a philanthropist and an art collector. Steve Martin's advice, “be so good they can't ignore you” was the inspiration for Cal Newport's book. Does the name Steve Martin ring a bell? Performer, comedian, movie star, Saturday Night Live Alum, respected banjo player, father, husband, and author of autobiography Born Standing Up. (By the way, if you are looking for a great read, I highly recommend it.) Read the ArticleHere is a general idea of where the magic is.If a person believes there is a reasonable chance of making their dream happen and they have a sincere desire to make it happen, three things occur:1.         Their focus becomes very narrow.2.         Distractions begin to fade as the goal becomes more evident. (However, sometimes they start to pull away from some relationships for a season.)3.         They zero in on activities that lead to the changes they long for. As they make progress—honing their skill set or craft or muscle tone, whatever—they look for the next challenge that is “just manageable.” They find the next task that is difficult but doable on the way to their dream. Victory is not guaranteed, but it is possible as the individual does what they can from where they are to make it happen.John ThurmanCounseling, WorkLife Consulting.  www.johnthurman.info505 343-2011email: john@johnthurman.info

Steve Martin's career has had many peaks and valleys over many different mountains. From music, to movies, to books, to his first love in stand up comedy. His life and art have often intersected in surprising, hilarious, and heart breaking ways. His contribution to stand up is as timeless and American as the banjo music he later mastered.  The story of his rise to fame and his quiet departure from the stage outlines a country breaking free of an era into a wild and crazy future. Lucky for us we had the right guy for the job.

James has filmed five stand-up specials – the first four make up the series Repertoire, available on Netflix, while the most recent, Cold Lasagne Hate Myself 1999, arrived on Vimeo earlier this month. He was also nominated a record-breaking five years in a row for Best Comedy Show at the Edinburgh Fringe, from 2012 to 2016. He talks me through how he writes a set; the structure of stand-up, and the art of a well-placed callback; and how he reconciles the inherently stressful dynamic of his job with his efforts to protect his mental health. In our last +1, we had fun extending Cal Newport’s Work wisdom to our Energy and Love. As you may recall, I suggested that we may want to consider…   Being So Good They Can’t Ignore us Work wise.   And…   Being So ENERGIZED They Can FEEL Us Energy wise.   And…   That we want to be So AWESOME They Adore Us Love wise.   Today I want to step back and have fun chatting about where Cal got the name for his great book So Good They Can’t Ignore You. (Check out the Notes and everything else Cal has done. lol. Including his Luminary session with our Coaches!)   So…   Cal named his book after some wisdom from Steve Martin.    Here’s how Cal tells the story: “In a 2007 episode of the Charlie Rose show, Rose was interviewing the actor and comedian Steve Martin about his memoir Born Standing Up. They talked about the realities of Martin’s rise. In the last five minutes of the interview, Rose asks Martin his advice for aspiring performers.   “Nobody ever takes note of [my advice], because it’s not the answer they wanted to hear,” Martin said. “What they want to hear is ‘Here’s how you get an agent, here’s how you write a script,’ . . . but I always say, ‘Be so good they can’t ignore you.’ ”   In response to Rose’s trademark ambiguous grunt, Martin defended his advice: “If somebody’s thinking, ‘How can I be really good?’ people are going to come to you.””   That. Is. Brilliant.   And…   That’s Today’s +1.   Let’s be So Good They Can’t Ignore Us. So Energized They Can Feel Us. And So AWESOME They Adore Us.   TODAY.

How has the corona virus affected my voiceover business?  My availability is similar.  On previous episodes of this podcast, I have talked about my voiceover business being a part-time job I can do from home.  That’s still true.  Instead of working while the kids are at school, however, I work before the kids are up, at the end of my husband’s work day, and on weekends.  Learning Opportunities The corona virus caused two unexpected changes to my learning opportunities this spring, specifically my improv training and my Toastmasters meetings.  My Level Two Improv Class has been postponed; it was supposed to start this week.  I miss laughing and playing games, but I will get back to it some day.   My Toastmaster’s Club meets via Zoom now instead of in-person.  Not a bad alternative, if you ask me!  Toastmasters is helping me become a better public speaker.  I love it, and the people in my club are great.  We meet each Friday morning from 7-8:30 AM Eastern Time.  Medical Narration Demo I got my medical narration demo back.  I think it sounds great, and if you would like to listen to it, you can check it out by visiting my website or my LinkedIn profile.  The website is thepharmacistsvoice.com, and my LinkedIn profile can be found using the link in the show notes.  The demo was produced by David Rosenthal and his team at the Global Voice Acting Academy.   What does one do once they have a demo?  That’s a great question!  Other than sharing it on my website and including it on my LinkedIn Profile, I still have a lot to learn.  The right next steps are important, and I am excited to learn more from my coach this month. Direct Marketing My sources tell me that direct-marketing using LinkedIn is the way to find medical narration and e-learning voiceover work.  I’m not a marketing person, I’m a pharmacist.  I didn’t know what it meant to direct-market on LinkedIn at first.  I needed help! When I was at a voiceover conference in New York City last September, I heard about an on-line course called The VO Edge.  It was created by a voice actor who found success direct-marketing to potential clients using LinkedIn.  It took me about 8 hours over the course of one week to complete the course and update my LinkedIn profile.  It was worth my time, and I’m looking forward to expanding my network and direct-marketing soon. On a related topic, I’ve had the good fortune to connect with many voice actors, either online through social media or at the VOcation conference in September.  They are very generous with what they know and have taught me many things.  Every other Thursday I meet with a group of voice actors who have become my voiceover accountability buddies.  We talk about what we have accomplished in the past two weeks, what we are working on now, what’s coming up, and what’s in our way.  Everyone is very helpful, and I feel really lucky to be part of the group! Other than my accountability buddy group, many voice actors have kindly offered to have a conversation with me and share what they know or help me with a small task.  In fact, last month, I needed to test my Skype call recorder for a podcast interview, and a voice actor friend came through for me.  He even recruited a third caller to help me out!  I got the call recorder working, and they generously stayed on the call to talk some shop and give me some advice.  That was really awesome, and I appreciated it! Audiobook narration training In other news, I continue to train to be an audiobook narrator with Sean Pratt.  I love what I am learning, and I have a lesson scheduled for next week. Learning while sheltering in place There is a lot of buzz on social media about learning new skills while stuck at home as the corona virus sweeps through the US.  I love to learn, and I fully support this suggestion.  I already learned about LinkedIn, like I said.  Next, I’m planning to finish some on-line courses on using my recording software and audio repair software.   Keeping busy Other than working when I can, I have been getting out with my husband and kids and walking at parks or around our neighborhood.  The weather has been pretty decent here in Ohio.  It’s finally spring.  When it’s 40 degrees out and sunny, being outside feels great.  If you’re from the midwest, you might also say that it’s finally warm enough to drive with your windows down.  In fact, I’ve seen people doing it already, especially the dog owners.  People in Florida and California are probably thinking I’m nuts, but I’m serious.  It’s an Ohio thing!   To keep busy, I’m also, reading Steve Martin’s book, Born Standing Up and enjoying it!  Books written by American comedians are awesome.  They’re funny, and I always learn something.   Thank you's and celebrating innovation Thank you to all the pharmacists and other healthcare workers who are on the front lines on the corona virus pandemic.  Thank you to everyone doing everything they can to help.  From the families who are staying home to the food industry workers keeping the shelves stocked in the stores.  Thank you. I am very proud of the innovation I am seeing in the US right now too.  So many human interest stories are showing up, exemplifying what it means to be an American.  We get knocked down, but we get up again and try to innovate the heck out of a bad situation.  Just some examples: Places of worship are streaming worship services Teachers are teaching from on-line platforms, using short videos, and otherwise making lemonade from the lemons sheltering in place has given them.   I even heard that Ford Motor Company is retooling to make ventilators.   Quilting groups are making fabric masks for food industry workers.   And, my friend Claudine co-founded a Facebook Group for Individuals with Special Needs.  The Group gives activity ideas to families sheltering in place with a family member with special needs.  This hits home for me.  I have a 17-year-old son with autism.  This is a tough time for him and our whole family.  We can’t have caregivers in our home right now.  He loves us, but he misses them.  He misses school and classmates too.  We will get through this.    April is starting off fairly well.  Working from home is nothing new.  I have a home recording studio, a great medical narration demo, supportive friends and coaches, and new skills.  I’m a self-starter, and I’m excited about what comes next. FYI, I’m in 26 US states and 15 countries!  Thank you for listening!

Looking back over the last four and a half years, hundreds upon hundreds of hours of content (especially watching some of the really early stuff), I couldn’t help but think that despite our lack of natural ability, we certainly possessed the one crucial aspect to all early creative endeavors – naïveté. Steve Martin’s career guidance in his memoir, “Born Standing Up”, is to be so good they can’t ignore you. Ivy league computer science professor Cal Newport took it to heart. So much so that he wrote a best selling book with that title! Cal was my featured guest in show 703 where we discussed his book Deep Work and his latest book, Digital Minimalism. In this episode he shares his habits for success. Cal is one of the more influential personalities of...today’s influencers. Some of what you’ll hear is, Cal is a follower of Michael Pollan and Mark Sisson and primal eating and exercising. He's big into cognitive fitness and the reality that the brain is a muscle that needs to be worked out consistently. He's a fan of multiple streams of income and literally states he never trusts one stream of income. His best career advice, we already covered! He seeks high quality leisure and plays guitar in some bands. All in all, not the picture you might have of a professor of computer science at an Ivy League school. I am beyond thrilled to have this guest on the Euphoric podcast. Not only is Andy Ramage my hero, he was one of the key people who shifted how I viewed alcohol and allowed me to see how limitless life can be without it. Andy is the co-founder of One Year No Beer, a global movement to transform people’s relationships with alcohol by taking a break from drinking and discovering how incredible life is without it. Andy takes things to the next level and optimizes his life for peak performance. He proves that quitting alcohol can make you healthier, happier, more motivated and productive and let’s you go for all your dreams (seems like we have a similar goal). Case in point, he’s written two books, one called the 28 Day Alcohol-Free Challenge and another one on motivation coming soon, gotten a Master’s degree in positive psychology, started a business that has helped over 25,000 people, and is actively challenging the status quo that we have to drink to fit in on TV, popular podcasts and TEDx. Tune in to our conversation to learn more about his story, how he became an expert on behavioral change, what his morning routine looks like, and the top books to read to change your life. According to Andy, the single best thing you could do to improve your life? Quit drinking alcohol. Finally arriving on the grand stage- famous & rich, Steve Martin called his summit of success "the loneliest time of my life." Today's episode continues the comedian's journey as told in his book "Born Standing Up." A candid, honest look at what it's really like to "arrive" only to realize it ain't all that. We continue chopping up comedian Steve Martin's book "Born Standing Up." Yesterday's episode dealt with the 75/25 % (or 80/20) principle that it takes three quarters effort/refinement to achieve 25% massive success (if done right). As Martin created his niche, he did the opposite of all comedians. He asked the question, "What if I remove the punchline and created more tension, so the audience chose when and where to laugh?" Today's episode asks the question, as it relates to the book, what if instead of giving your customers a "punchline" ..to react, what if you created more tension- good tension that caused a stronger response and urge to do business with you. ----if you'd Rate, Review, & Share the show I'll dance at your funeral (or just be appreciative)---annnnnd drop me a line, thesis, or message in a bottle to thesaleslife1@gmail.com ✌️Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/marshbuice/message

This week is a book dive .....(Hat tip to listener Dave who gave me the suggestion) ....Today we dive into comedian/actor Steve Martin's incredible book "Born Standing Up" The book started like this (that's how I knew it was gonna be good) "I did stand up comedy for 18 years; 10 to learn; 4 to refine; 4 to ride the wave of success." Today's episode runs with this passage that it takes 75% work/effort/refinement to net the 25% reward...and if you do it right.. them rewards will be reeeeel nice.

Annie is a children’s book author who doesn’t just write and sell her books, but also creates “balloon theater” where she uses balloons to tell stories. Her shows are tailored for elementary schools, public libraries, preschools, and family events, and her mission is to help children realize that they have amazing creative ability hidden within themselves. With her, every balloon has a story.   Kris' Recommendation of the Week I just finished listening to the audio version of Steve Martin's book Born Standing Up and I get something new out of it every time! In our third episode we begin the show discussing Steve Martin’s autobiography “Born Standing Up” with comedian Dan Van Kirk, looking into the incredible career of the legendary comedian. We also delve into the art and challenges of stand up comedy, the improvised stand up show “Set List”, audience dynamics, and how fame and popularity change everything. Next, we get a visit from a “Helicopter Mom” in New Canaan Conn., Julia Ballentine Peter, who tells us how a children’s book by James Patterson of ‘Alex Cross’ fame, “Treasure Hunters”, got her daughter Nel, 8, to fall in love with reading. It turns out that’s something he’s passionate about, and he has a great website called readkiddoread.com that promotes reading for kids and does lots of great work. Next, we talk to comedian Doug Dixon about a fascinating non-fiction book, “How We Got To Now: Six innovations That Made the Modern World” - by Steven Johnson. Based on the television series of the same name, hosted by Steven Johnson of the same person, seen on BBC2 and PBS. It’s an amazing multi-media project about innovation and how things change our world in surprising ways. Read it or watch it, you can choose! (You’re probably gonna watch it, aren’t you?) This project reminds me of another multi-media project I love, The Big History Project, a collaboration between Bill Gates and David Christian that’s about, well, everything. I highly recommend checking it out. It’s fun, easy, and informative. We wrap it up with a timely selection from Raj Desai, “Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk”: by Ben Fountain. Currently being made into a movie by Ang Lee, this provocative novel leads us into a great discussion about late bloomers, heroes, Raj’s hometown of Arlington Tx., Catch-22 by Joseph Heller, a young Alan Arkin, Malcolm Gladwell, The Dallas Cowboys, and so much more.
