In honor of Mother's Day this week, both of our storytellers are sharing stories about the good, the bad, and the unexpected parts about being a mom. Part 1: Silvana Clark finds a bat in her newborn's room and thinks it may have bitten her baby.  Part 2: Leah Moore navigates the challenges of raising a daughter with cri-du-chat syndrome alongside her other children with their own special needs. Silvana Clark's storytelling career began in high school when she made up creative stories to get out of boring classes. Since then she's gone on to write 12 books, travel to 63 countries and train her dog to star in TV commercials. Silvana has told stories to groups ranging from the Canadian Llama Association to the American Sunbathing Society. (Yes….nudists.) She's trying to figure out how to tell a story about when she was a recreation major and had to dissect a cadaver. No gloves provided in those days! Leah Moore has been teaching English and Theater for over sixteen years. She is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin and has a master's in Educational Theater from New York University. She was the recipient of the prestigious, Teacher of the Year award, presented to ten New York City Teachers annually. She first premiered her writing on her parenting blog, www.lovingyoubig.com, which has an international audience in over 57 countries. Her family has been featured in a documentary about cri du chat, a rare chromosomal disability. She has been a guest on popular media outlets, such as Forbes and ESPN, working to create more stories centering around individuals with disabilities. She is the author of the memoir, Loving You Big: one family embracing the unexpected. She lives in New York with her husband, three children, and her daughter's collection of rainbow wigs. Wholistic Hearts: A Mother’s Wholehearted Christian Approach to Spiritual Growth and Transformational Healing

During our walk with the Lord, there are often times where we yearn for a deeper connection and we find ourselves navigating in deep spiritual waters. In today's episode Kristin invites mentor Leah Moore for a conversation on fasting, prayers, and how they become the compass that guides us through these deeper waters.   Leah welcomes listeners into the concept behind fasting, why we do it, and the power it can offer us during our Christian journey. Fasting equips us with spiritual discipline and self-control allowing us to stay anchored in our faith. Leah takes us into the incredible power that prayer and fasting offer us when they're combined. The door to a deeper relationship with the Lord opens when we engage in both fasting and prayers. Fasting humbles us, making us more receptive to God's guidance, while prayers connect us to his heart.    There are moments when we find ourselves delving into the deep waters of our soul, seeking a closer connection with the Lord. Fasting and prayers, like inseparable twins, serve as powerful tools to help us navigate these spiritual depths.   Connect with Leah Moore Instagram @gracepromises5 Website Purchase her Journal  Love what we are doing here on Wholistic Hearts, here are three ways to help us spread this Good News Share with a friend! ONCE UPON A GENE - EPISODE 115 Create Conversation, Community, and Change with Author of Loving You Big - Leah Moore Leah Moore won a prestigious award for being teacher of the year in New York, she's the author of the memoir Loving You Big, and she's the parent of three kiddos, one of which was diagnosed with Cri du chat syndrome. EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS Can you share about yourself and your family? I am a high school English and theater teacher in New York and I live in Westchester, which is north of the city with my three kids and my husband. Our ten year old daughter Jordan has a rare diagnosis called Cri du chat which is a deletion of the fifth chromosome. We also have twin boys who are now six, one which has an unnamed disability and the other has Idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP), which is a rare autoimmune disease.  You talk about loving the disability out of Jordan. Was that the inspiration for your book?  I started writing because my students were doing a personal narrative assignment and they were struggling. To show them how to do it, I wrote what was intended to be a silly example, but what poured out of me was a piece about the irony of language and how I have words and Jordan doesn't. When I read it to them, I realized I was holding on to stories I needed to tell.  What ideas do you have for people to become inclusion allies? It starts with avoiding staring at the playground, asking how to help, asking a person's name and asking someone to play. Saying hi is an easy first step.  How can we balance chronic stress with joy?  I personally believe that if we only stay in a negative place, it can color everything. I had to work at how to let it out. For me, it's through writing, through connecting to the people in my circle who I don't feel judgment from, or through watching Netflix on the couch. You have to do the work to figure out where you can let it out safely. I don't quite know the formula, I just know it's imperative.  How are you and your husband intentional about tending your marriage?  I think of the days of diagnosis and medical fears as the triage days. One of the fires I needed to put out was not my husband because he was able to take care of himself. And I realized at some point, we were just raising each other's children and our conversations were about milk and epilepsy medication. So I think it's a combination of three things- not taking on too much myself, having a life outside our children, and tapping into each other's humor. Leah is a mum, a wife, a life coach and she understands codependency, because she has lived with it most of her life. Like many of us, her journey into discovering the depths, of her need for others has sometimes been a shock to her own consciousness, sometimes it's been those conversations to avoid, and sometimes it's been a reflection of nature itself. I will quote from a post Leah placed on her facebook profile a short time ago.“When a bird lands, it doesn't waste time worrying about whether or not the foundation it chose to land on, will hold it. The bird has to trust, that no matter what, it has wings that will work. We need to be more like the bird and have unshakeable faith in ourselves.”It is true when learning how to fly we must trust the process and it is also true the pivotal role others, often the mother, have in choosing when it is time to give that compassionate push out of the nest. For someone with codependency issues, at what point do the excuses and fear become overwhelmingly interruptive to daily life?I am sure we will hear more about this topic from Leah as she recounts her own WhyMe moment and story and explains how she now helps others to overcome their neediness and weighty ties placed upon themselves and in turn allow their hearts to fly free in the world. You can contact Leah on her website or on facebook.Leah's recommended reading is for the book * by Michael A Singer is The Untethered Soul.Do you know the difference between and dream and a goal? Spoiler alert! Guest Leah Moore has 3 children with different needs. Her daughter Jordan was born with Cri Du Chat Syndrome. She began to lag behind developmentally, which led Leah to looking for a diagnosis for Jordan. Symptoms of this disorder can include a kitten-like cry, microcephaly, cognitive and developmental delays, hypotonia, require feeding tubes, and some children are unable to walk or talk. However, Jordan walks and talks but has some cognitive and social challenges. She also has epilepsy and some medical challenges. Due to her husband being a carrier for Cri Du Chat Syndrome, Leah did IVF, and ended up having twins. One of her twins, Austin, had hydrocephalus at birth, although he never required neurosurgery. He does have learning disabilities, but is doing well. Her other twin, Oliver, started developing some spots on his skin at one point. His doctors were concerned that he had leukemia, so he had numerous procedures and tests. He was later instead diagnosed with ITP, idiopathic thrombocytopenia. He is generally healthy,  but has a tendency to bleed more than other children would.   Leah found that she felt isolated during Jordan’s early years, as they were figuring out how to navigate the different needs. Leah also found it terrifying to manage all the needs at the same time. They learned to focus on the children as they were, and not focus on the appointments, and conditions, and paperwork that came with everything. She tries to just focus on who they are as people. When she tried to stop the sadness she was experiencing, she found that she squashed the joy, too. She wanted to remember that even in the worst time, there was still beautiful things happening every day. She found that reaching out to others and sharing her story was incredibly helpful for her. She uses writing as a huge outlet. She and her husband also take turns taking breaks. Keeping everything afloat is a challenge, but having a strong support system, starting psychotherapy, finding enjoyable hobbies, and relying on those tools when she needs them really help. She learned that she can’t be all things at all times. She struggled with finding her community, but she found them within social media, the Cri Du Chat community, and at conferences. She also connected with parents through her special education PTA and through her website. During crazy times, it can be helpful to control what can be controlled. Leah works hard on basic self-care, like dressing fully for the day or dressing up, which really helps to boost her mood. She noticed that any one thing doesn’t work for everyone. Each person is an individual. She noticed that finding tiny ways to care for herself works best. She works hard to be mindful during her day. Leah deals with stigma by educating others. She recommends reading books about differences and disabilities to help lessen stigma. Through teaching an adaptive theater class, Leah learned the following: Use structure and visual calendars. Make sure your child knows what his/her days look like. Be purposeful with your transitions. Be detailed about what will happen. Provide choice within structure. Have transitions look the same each time, when possible. Pause and notice. Notice what is working and when there is an opportunity for more learning. Yes and. Instead of focusing on “no,” say yes to the direction the child is leading you, within reason. Every single person has a voice. Each child has an opinion about something.   Links: Website Email Twitter  Instagram Wolf and Friends Email us if you have any questions or ideas! We are on instagram! Leah's resounding message for our listeners and everyone she comes into contact with is, “Share your story!” Leah and I talk about what strategies she leans on to cope with the challenges she's been given and practice self-care. She strongly believes in the power of writing and has even completed a memoir called, Loving You Big. She also shares how she's grown as a mother (and a person) in her ability to stand up for her daughter and many others, in a loving and respectful way. My guest  Leah Moore is the daughter of Alan Moore who is known for such titles as V for Vendetta, The Killing Joke, Swamp Thing and From Hell. Leah has written comic series with her husband John Reppion including The Trial of Sherlock Holmes and Sherlock Holmes-The Liverpool Demon (Dynamite Entertainment). Leah is writing the graphic novel Morrison Hotel, a celebration of The Doors album by the same name. The book is due for released in October. The anthology is written in collaboration with the surviving members of The Doors Robby Krieger and John Densmore. Artists from around the world including Colleen Doran, Marguerite Sauvage and more are illustrating the book. Leah describes her reaction as a teenager in the early 90s listening to The Doors music she discovered among her parent’s vinyl record collection. Co-founding member of The Doors Ray Manzarek once said, “Jim Morrison wasn’t a showman, he was a shaman.”  Leah Moore describes what made Jim Morrison and The Doors distinct among rock bands of the 1960s and how they were at the forefront the decade’s a social and cultural revolution. We also talk about how the album Morrison Hotel was a departure from their previous album The Soft Parade. Morrison Hotel was a return to their earlier roots as a blues rock band playing at clubs such as The Whiskey a Go-Go. Leah explains how the Morrison Hotel GN is a concerted effort to go beyond simply translating each track into its own short story. Stories include will also provide historical context for the songs included on Morrison Hotel. As we conclude our interview I Kick Back with The Creator and ask Leah about her favorite birthday, beverage of choice and if she could, the one question she would ask Jim Morrison.   The Doors Song Clips: “People Are Strange”- Strange Days “Wishful Sinful” – The Soft Parade “You Make Me Real” – Morrison Hotel “Peace Frog” – Morrison Hotel “Roadhouse Blues” – Morrison Hotel   Creator Talks Theme Song: "Jazz Relax" from LoopsLab  Creator Talks logo by The Design Punk   Please rate and review Creator Talks on Apple Podcasts   About Leah Moore   About the Morrison Hotel GN

The two women also address what inspired Leah’s blog and book. Annette Hines has been practicing in the areas of Special Needs, Elder Law, and Estate Planning for more than 20 years. It’s Dragons’ Den meets the Nerve Centre as Tharg the Mighty’s droids sit in judgement on hopeful writers and artists looking to join their ranks - and you can now listen to both of the panels on the latest edition of the 2000 AD Thrill-Cast! The script competition, at which would-be writers have two minutes to pitch their idea for a Future Shock, took place on the Saturday afternoon in front of a panel made up of current 2000 AD editor and writer Matt Smith, writer Leah Moore, and writer and former 2000 AD editor Andy Diggle. Almost 30 entrants nervously awaited the chance to stand before a live audience and deliver their pitch, with a dozen making it through in time. For the art competition, entrants had to draw pages from The Ticket, a Terror Tale by Paul Tobin and originally drawn by Dan Cornwell. After getting through a HUGE line of would-be contestants, 2000 AD editor Matt Smith chose nine entries to go forward to the judging panel on the Sunday morning. In front of a live audience the panel - made up of writer Leah Moore (Storm Warning), and artists Mike Dowling (Anderson, Psi Division) and Frazer Irving (Judge Death) - went through each entry and gave advice to the artists on how to improve their work.
