This week on ComicLab, veteran comic artists Brad Guigar and Dave Kellett kick things off a discussion about something every cartoonist wrestles with: work-life balance. If you're juggling a day job, relationships, and your creative ambitions, Brad and Dave break down practical strategies that actually work — including: • Why consistency beats intensity • How to build a repeatable creative schedule • The power of small, daily wins • And why your health and relationships are just as critical as your drawing skills They also tackle a big-picture career question: What happens when a long-running comic ends? Dave shares his thoughts on winding down Drive, how to retain an audience, and the challenge of transitioning into your next project without losing momentum. Our old friend Jim Zub joins me today at The Corner of Story and Game. Jim is best known for his work in the comic book industry, which he has been creating since he self-published Makeshift Miracle in 2001. Over the past 21 years, he has created a vast library of titles ranging from creator-owned books like Wayward, Skullkickers, Glitterbomb, and Stone Star - to big-name properties such as Samurai Jack, Dungeons and Dragons, Pathfinder, Uncanny Avengers, Wolverine, and even a Rick and Morty / D&D crossover. These days Jim has so many books in the works that it is hard to keep up, but I'm pretty sure there is a Conan title in there, as well as another Rick and Morty book (this time with Cthulu!). This conversation actually turned into a two-parter, as we wandered pretty far down the rabbit hole of writing craft, industry practices, maintaining relationships, and so much more. The next time Jim and I sit down, we will dive into gaming and writing for games (and talk more about Jim's TED talk.) Enjoy! I had the undeniable pleasure of chatting to UK comics writer Leah Moore. From growing up with comics royalty to a career spanning two decades, Leah has written for existing franchises, adapted novels to comics, and created original new properties. And perhaps most importantly, Leah has written many well-rounded, interesting female characters, something we need […]

In this episode, Caleb and Todd talk with U.S. Ambassador of Comic Books and comic book author, Van Jensen. *Guest Links* Van Jensen on Twitter ( https://twitter.com/van_jensen ) *What We Learned* *1. Storytelling is a skill that is independent on writing.* Many people tend to associate storytelling with writing a book, but it can be found in anything you create such as art, movies, music, etc. *2. Every great hero is broken* We connect with the heroes that have flaws. It helps us emotionally connect with them and gives us a reason to cheer them on. *3. Villains are like heroes.* Villains are very similar to heroes. They both experience something that happened to them, but they response in different ways. They both want something, but go about achieving it in different ways. *Quotes to Tweet* "Storytelling is a skill that is independent of writing." - @van_jensen @LearnersPodcast Click to Tweet ( https://ctt.ec/uy8x2 ) "Every great character is tragic and broken in some sense." - @van_jensen @LearnersPodcast Click to Tweet ( https://ctt.ec/de5E8 ) "The thing that makes a good hero is what makes a good villain." - @van_jensen @LearnersPodcast Click to Tweet ( https://ctt.ec/rsbZz ) *New Episode Every Tuesday* *Join Us Every Tuesday* Thank you for listening to the Learner's Corner Podcast.
