This week Danielle brings the superhero craziness with the 2020 film Wonder Woman 1984. If you didn't see the first Wonder Woman film, don't worry, neither did Sam, and Danielle barely remembers it, so no context needed! Diana Prince (Gal Gadot) is your average working 80s girl, only she's really an immortal Amazonian from Themyscira who is still pining for Steve (Chris Pine), the love of her life and a pilot who died in World War 1. When a botched robbery brings a mysterious citrine in to the Smithsonian where Diana works with her mousy new friend Barbara Minerva (Kristen Wiig), things start to go awry. While holding the stone, both Diana and Barbara make wishes in their heads and then a magic wind blows, foreshadowing the granting of their wishes. Barbara wished to be strong and beautiful like Diana, but Diana's wish is a surprise for later. That's when Maxwell Lord (Pedro Pascal) rolls in, he's the head of an oil company/Ponzi scheme who has just made a large donation to the museum, which seems to grant him carte blanche to just touch evidence, like the citrine, in an FBI investigation. He invites them all to a gala that night in his honor and Barbara is instantly taken with him and agrees while Diana declines. That night at the gala, Diana is now suspicious of Max and shows up anyway, and is immediately sexually harassed by every guy in there, since all men in this world are completely terrible. She brushes them off, but then one of them says a phrase that Steve once said to her, and Diana realizes her wish came true: Steve is back! Only, Steve is not himself, his consciousness has been shoved into the body of another man. What happened to the mind of the man whose body this was originally? Who cares, certainly not our supposed "heroes" Diana and Steve, who immediately drop everything to go have sex in that poor, possessed man's home with his unable-to-consent body. Meanwhile, Max Lord (seriously, that name) has initiated a make-out session with Barbara in order to steal the citrine. With the citrine safely in his castle/home, Max does something absolutely bonkers and wishes to become the wishing stone. It might be reasonable to take a moment here to discuss the rules of the magic citrine, but the rules for this wishing stone are so arbitrary and crazy you're just going to have to listen to all our rants to get it, there's too much to include here. Maxwell then starts coercing others into wishing things that benefit him while touching him, and then also taking something from them in exchange for the "wish", and if that's confusing, get used to it. Anyway, Max jets off to Egypt while Diana and Steve, now back on the case, follow him in the dumbest way imaginable. This movie is so long, and chock-a-block full of nonsense, that Danielle has to end it there before Sam gets so angry at the inconsistent wishing rules and dumb Wonder Woman lasso tricks that he quits the podcast entirely.

Like most geeks around the world, we were uber hyped for Wonder Woman 1984 to FINALLY come out. But now that it's out and we've wasted our time watching it... we wish it had stayed unreleased forever. How can one film make you feel so disappointed!? Here's your spoiler warning: Basically spoilers throughout this entire episode which is really just one big long rant. Because how can you talk about one of, if not the WORST, superhero movies ever made without hitting into spoiler territory for the whole thing? Ya can't. In this ode to a shit movie, we really do our best to make the rant humourous (totally unintentional) and think this might be the most entertaining 50 minutes of your entire week. You are WELCOME. The best part of the movie is, very literally, the beginning with young Diana. 11 minutes of greatness. And then... it just goes downhill. All the fucking way downhill until it's rolling around in the mud and getting stuck and can't get it's footing back. So what's wrong with it? In short: Female characters being reduced to appearance, hero worshipping, changing themselves to be someone they're not. GROSS. We are TIRED of this narrative!! Especially in what's supposed to be a superhero movie full of female empowerment. Diana being reduced to a love-sick puppy. The entire theme with Steve is dis-gust-ing and not at ALL the Wonder Woman we've come to know and love, especially after her first movie! We for real-real are not down with this storyline! The Dream Stone just doesn't make sense and how the heck does Max Lord know all about it when two highly intelligent women and scientists and researchers had never heard of it. Let's just leave that there, okay? This makes NO SENSE. Steve posessing some RANDOM AF dude, who doesn't even get a name, and does allll the sex with Diana. Um, hello?? Bodily consent??! Absolutely not okay with this scenario. Okay now they're in Egypt following the cheesiest scene in the history of cheesy scenes. Also, 1940's fighter pilot Steve now knows how to fly 1980's aircraft with NO PROBLEM AT ALL. Okay thennnnn. Gal Gadot's questionable AF heroic save of Egyptian children being "coincidentally" parallel to some Israeli bombinb of the Gaza Strip. GROSS. NOT OKAY. Barbara - Cheetah - the ACTUAL villain is basically just a sidekick to Max Lord. She's not living up to her full potential and it's disappointing AF. Okay so you can see where we're going with this, right!? Widely regarded as one of WB’s greatest recent achievements, 2017’s WONDER WOMAN was a landmark film that broke records and was celebrated throughout Hollywood. Now, with the release of WONDER WOMAN 1984, the Amazonian princess returns with… less fanfare. Divisive from the moment of its release, WW84 sees Diana in the heart of the ‘Me Generation’ of the 1980s as she attempts to defeat the villainous Max Lord and Cheetah. This week, returnees Deb ‘Wonder’ Whalen and Gary Blaze stop by to talk about the film’s depiction of greed, its understanding of truth and why it has struggled to connect with audiences.

This week the sisters do a deep dive (into Wonder Woman 1984). Who enjoyed it and who didn’t? You’ll have to listen to find out. Things they both agree upon; Virginia is For Lovers, Kristen Wiig plays the same character in everything, ladies are much hotter when they take off their glasses and walk in heels, male actors (looking at you Chris Pine) need to focus more on skincare and SPF, and of course that nothing beats an ‘80s clothing montage. Questions that may or not be answered: How does the wishing stone work? Why didn’t Max Lord just wish for oil? Did Barbara renounce her wish? Do WWI pilots know how to fly fighter jets? Will ScarJo ever get her own movie? Was DC trying to cash in on their December release with that end scene? And most importantly, why didn’t they give The Cheetah the curly ‘80s hair she deserved? This week we’re hopping in the invisible plane, wearing a rad fanny pack, and fighting our best friend who is now for no reason a cheetah lady, all while discussing the latest DC Blockbuster ‘Wonder Woman 1984’. Wonder Woman 1984 is a 2020 American superhero film based on the DC Comics character Wonder Woman. It is the sequel to 2017's Wonder Woman and the ninth installment in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU). The film is directed by Patty Jenkins from a script she wrote with Geoff Johns and Dave Callaham, based on a story by Johns and Jenkins. Gal Gadot stars as Diana Prince / Wonder Woman, alongside Chris Pine, Kristen Wiig, Pedro Pascal, Robin Wright, and Connie Nielsen. Set in 1984 during the Cold War, the film follows Diana and her past love Steve Trevor as they face off against Max Lord and Cheetah. We Watched A Thing is supported by Dendy Cinemas Canberra. Patty Jenkins NEWS OF THE WORLD Tom Hanks is the captain again for a sec…thir…fourth time as Captain Kidd - A Civil War veteran who fought for the south who now travels around reading the news of the world to people in different towns if they have a dime and an evening to spend.  Hi co star, Helena Zengel is terrific as Johanna- an orphaned girl with nowhere to go.  They travel hundreds of miles on a pretty breathtakingly beautiful journey across the south to find what is left of her family only to realize the cliched and inevitable conclusion.  One of the best middle of the road films of the year.  (6/10) SOUL Disney Pixar films need no introduction, and this one is no exception.  Jaimee Foxx and Tina Fey head up this emotional and colorful ride as we follow Joe (Foxx) has lost his passion for music and, through spoiler heavy moments, is separated from his body and must find his way back, while also helping a soul with potential to learn who she is and her passions.  Some WONDERFUL moments await you as well as a great score.  One of the better Pixar resume items.  (8/10) WONDER WOMAN 1984 Patty Jenkins, WHAT HAPPENED?  That’s certainly an appropriate question.  Wonder Woman (2017) was, in many ways, a huge success.  Box office and critically success found Wonder Woman in droves.  Well paced, well acted and very well directed- certainly the best of DC as far as the DCEU is concerned.  Yet WW1984 is almost the opposite of the qualities listed above.  Gal Gadot, Chris Pine both reprise their roles and are joined by Pedro Pascal and Kristen Wiig.  We now fast forward to the 80’s where Diana must face two new enemies: Max Lord and the Cheetah.  If you’re a fan or have fond memories of the 80’s then this movie is absolutely for you, because it isn’t for anyone else.      Hosted, produced and mixed by Grayson Maxwell and Roger Stillion.  Guest appearance by Christopher Boughan.  Music by Chad Wall.  Quality Assurance by Anthony Emmett. Will and Jes kick off the New Year with a discussion of Wonder Woman 1984, with special guest Jessica Marcrum. Topics include: How the development of the film's theme adversely affected the whole story. Max Lord and his defeat: in the comics vs. in the film. Would the movie have been more effective if it had been released a few years ago? Chris Pine's inclusion in the movie. "Body-snatching" Steve Trevor. Plotholes or not-holes? Revealing character in action sequences. "Steve is no punk." A toxic theme? What happened to the stone after Max Lord renounced his wish. The characters who did NOT renounce their wishes. The film's performances. Pedro Pascal's performance, and when "the mask slips." Gaps in the emotional realism of the movie. What made the film's climax less cathartic than it could have been. That post-credits scene. Our top DC comics films. Wonder Woman 1984: the good vs. the not-so-good What if the film had been set AFTER the events of Justice League? Why deleted scenes get deleted from movies. The Superhero Show Show #355More Like WW 86'd (feat. Katelynn from Unnatural 20's)On an all-new episode of The Superhero Show Show, The Taste Buds discuss the finale of Marvel 616 and Wonder Woman 84!On this week's Superhero Hour Hour, Cassie brings in her Unnatural 20's compatriot Katelynn to hose the boys down and do some real talk about two things: Wonder Woman and Squirrel Girl. (In the interest of full disclosure, Katelynn doesn't care about Wonder Woman, but Squirrel Girl is Katelynn's favorite Marvel superhero, and overall superhero, and fictional character, and non-fictional person. She thinks Squirrel Girl is real). They start the show with a conversation aboutWW84HBO Max did something crazy, and release this summer's biggest blockbuster into our homes six months later. And now you get to see what this foursome thought about it. And I'm going to let it be a surprise. I will not tell you what they thought about it. AARRRGGHH. It's so hard not to tell you that they were not fans. It is not a good movie. BUT...which of the four of them did a good job explaining why it was a bad movie, and which of the four of them let their disappointment run all over them and just barf insults. OK, none of them did that. But no one like it. It's a movie with a lot of flaws. Marvel 616But here is the reason for the season. On the finale of Marvel 616, high school kids in Florida do a play about, among others, Squirrel Girl, and we brought in our Squirrel Girl expert to judge the depiction of the character, and the performances of these high school newbies. That's probably enough, right?NO.After that, we're talking about episode 203 of Pennyworth, and of course we go to X-TASMANIA, to discuss Angel, Cable, Apocalypse, and all of the X-Men in between them. You know we're trying to do an episode of X-Men: The Animated Series every week, and this one is a doozy. Rogue is in the hot seat this weak, and if you don't think that seat is hot, she'll touch you and then you'll die. Like Cody. Do you want to be like Cody? Didn't think so.EPISODES AND MOVIES DISCUSSED:MARVEL 616 #108Watch Marvel 616 on Disney+Marvel has created a series of one-act plays to challenge teenagers to explore the humans behind their favorite Marvel Super Heroes, including Ms. Marvel and Squirrel Girl, and examine universal challenges facing young adults today.PENNYWORTH #202Watch Pennyworth on EpixAlfred's plans for his departure to America are put on hold when someone close to him is put in danger. Geekorama is Produced by Superhero-Fiction.comhttps://www.superhero-fiction.comFor this week’s episode of Geekorama, we’re discussing what you can read to tide you over until Wonder Woman 1984 (hopefully) gets released in theaters.Pop-Culture Trivia - 1965 Wonder Girl: Donna TroyOriginally there is a bit of confusion about this character because, in an effort to make Wonder Woman more palatable after the publication of Seduction of the Innocent, they did a series of Impossible Tales showing WW as a child who was called Wonder Girl. Then in a July 1961 WW comic, Wonder Girl is referred to as a separate person from Diana. The first time Wonder Girl appeared as a separate person from WW was in The Brave and the Bold #6. Commonly connected with Teen Titans, she is considered a founding member of the team. Her most iconic iteration has to be the George Perez and Marv Wolfman run on Teen Titans in the 1980’s. Donna has a SLEW of weird, retconned origins including: being a magically brought to life reflection of Diana so the young Princess had an age-appropriate playmate, a golem brought to life by Wally West’s incomplete memories of her from a previous iteration who is then forced to relive all her previous lives, resurrected by Titans of Myth so she can be exploited as an anomaly that existed prior to the Crisis. Recommended reading: Teen Titans by George Perez and Marv Wolfman.GEEK OUTSTrish - Warrior Nun! A great Netflix show that has an interesting approach to a female dominant cast. The acting is top notch. The topics get dark and there is plenty of humor. Netflix shoots itself in the foot with a tragically abrupt ending that is bound to be unresolved knowing how easily they cancel shows.Jeremy - The perfect marriage of comics and graphic design can be found with HelloMuller. The designer who created the design behind Powers of X and House of X is nothing short of visual eye candy. The best part is, he has a long history with comics. Post Crisis he ends up putting together because the world needs heroes. It’s revealed later that he’s doing this for nefarious purposes and all hell breaks loose. He’s now, canonically, a villain. Portrayed in both Smallville and Supergirl, he makes his big-screen debut in WW 1984. QotW: What do you hope to see in the WW 1984 movie? Visit Superhero-Fiction to Discover Uncanny Superhero StoriesSubscribe to Geekorama to Stay Up-to-Date on All Things SuperheroiTunes | Spotify | Podbean | YoutubeFollow Superhero-Fiction on Social MediaSuperhero-Fiction Facebook Page | Superhero-Fiction Facebook GroupTrish Heinrich – Facebook | InstagramJeremy Flagg - Facebook | Instagram

This week Scott and Chris are joined by a special guest from the mystical Island of Staten: Agent of LAW David Pascarella. It's the penultimate week of Supergirl season one recaps as Scott, David and Chris team-up to discuss episodes eleven and twelve. First, we finally get more of the secret origin of the Martian Manhunter as we learn about the slaughter Jonn's people met at the hands of the White Martians. Coincidentally enough this is brought on by an attack from a White Martian on an anti-alien politician. Also, bonus soapy in the arrival of Cat Grant's estranged son Adam. Next, Supergirl and the team must figure out how to fight her bizarre evil doppelganger/Max Lord science project. We'll leave you to figure out what her name is. And remember kids, try not to schedule your dates on the night a supervillain might attack. Bonus discussion with David about Rogue One and his thoughts on the CW Superverse. Stay tuned!

SPOILER/NSFW - DC on SCREEN #158 - Supergirl 1x20 - Better Angels [SEASON FINALE] | Review - Hope works in the season finale. Maybe it will work in getting a second season! This episode picks up where the last left off, with Kara in coerced combat with her Non-controlled sister Alex.  But J’onn brings Alex’s mother to talk her out of being brainwashed—and it works.  This fuels the belief that Supergirl broadcasting a message of hope will stop Myriad—and it works. Everyone is freed of the Myriad mojo, but Non and Indigo decide to amp it up to pop everyone’s brains open.  J’onn effortlessly breaks free of the bonds General Lane placed him in to help Kara, Lucy as head of the DEO is on board with that, and Kara goes to everyone saying goodbye as she, thanks to a deep talk with Max Lord, believes that the only way to stop Non and Indigo may be to sacrifice herself.  Kara and J’onn fight Non and Indigo. J’onn rips Indigo in half, and Supergirl eye-blasts her uncle to death? Or blindness? I don’t know.  Kara then flies Fort Rozz into outer space where she begins to suffocate in the cold of space?  And Alex rescues her by using Kara’s own space pod.  Afterward, J’onn is reinstated as head of the DEO, Cat gives Kara a promotion, James gives kara a kiss and a picture, and everything is so happy and wonderful and then some shit falls from the sky—another Kryptonian pod containing TO BE CONTINUED.

Hello Lantern Lovers, and welcome back to another episode of Just One of the Guys. This week in our coverage of the Green Lantern and Guy Gardner books, we get to see a honest depiction of life in New York City (NEW YORK CITY?!? Get a rope...) which involves demons coming out of dark alleys, superheroes moving furniture, and portals to Hell being opened up then subsequently shut by ancient evil wizards. Thomas Deja will back me up on the validity of these claims. Over in Guy Gardner: Warrior we get Guy being given hero status by then President William Jefferson Clinton, having a heart to heart with the Man of Steel himself, and getting into a tussle with an obvious Hulk analogue, Sledge. Hopefully Guy also has ties to Max Lord level of money, because during the scrap he knocks down THE FREAKING WASHINGTON MONUMENT!!! Which I guess just leaves it open for replacement by the much larger Clinton Monument that was going to be built right beside it. So unless you want a face full of non Mummy Rocket Boots, I suggest you grab your mp3 player of choice, download the show, and get to listening!Feedback for this show can be sent to: justoneoftheguyspodcast@gmail.comJust One Of The Guys is a proud member of the Two True Freaks!
