While Mark Gottlieb has agenting in his blood—he's a second generation lit agent—he's not your typical agent. He doesn't specialize in any particular genre but bounces between fiction and nonfiction, with some children's books and graphic novels in between. And though he works with the Big Five publishers, he's open-minded when it comes to self-publishing and the new wave of publishing. In this episode we talked about how being a writer requires audacity, how tough it is to make a living as an author without a side profession and how most people don't even know what a lit agent is, among many other topics.
Jewish communities have just concluded the celebration of Shavuot, a pilgrimage festival in times of the Temple and the moment when, fifty days after the Jewish people's exodus from Egypt, God revealed the Ten Commandments to Moses. Those commandments form the foundation of the many rules and obligations inflected throughout the Jewish tradition. Indeed, after thousands of years of Jewish history, observant Jewish lives continue to be structured by what is known as halakhah, Jewish law. What is halakhah? In 2018, the rabbi Mark Gottlieb sat down to answer that question with Chaim Saiman, one of the world's foremost scholars of Jewish law and the author of a then newly published book called Halakhah: The Rabbinic Idea of Law. This week, in honor of the Jewish holiday that celebrates lawgiving, we bring you a rebroadcast of their discussion. Musical selections in this podcast are drawn from the Quintet for Clarinet and Strings, op. 31a, composed by Paul Ben-Haim and performed by the ARC Ensemble.
Join host Steve Martorano as he discusses the dangerous impact of online gambling and micro-betting on public health with guests Harry Levant, a certified gambling counselor, and two Northeastern University School of Law colleagues, Richard Daynard, and Mark Gottlieb. They explore the evolution of the gambling industry and its unprecedented combination of companies, media, sports leagues, and governments, all working together to deliver for-profit what is a known addictive product. Gambling Problem? Call 1-800-GAMBLER-------------------------------The Behavioral Corner is produced in partnership with Retreat Behavioral Health -- where healing happens.
In this podcast, I sit down with designer and puzzle-builder extraordinaire Mark Gottlieb to talk about the making of the puzzles for Murders at Karlov Manor.
We live in an amazing time when authors have lots of options for publishing. The main three options are these: First, you can self-publish your books, which means you assume all the risks, responsibilities, and rewards. Second, you can work with a hybrid publisher, which usually means you pay for their help with specific services, and they provide some of the functions of a traditional publisher. The third option, and the one most familiar to everyone, is traditional publishing. In this scenario, you sell your book to a publisher in exchange for an advance. They own the book but also take all the risk of producing and distributing the book, in addition to some marketing. Even though self-publishing has come a long way in the last ten or fifteen years, many authors still dream of getting a traditional publishing deal, especially with one of the big five New York publishers. If that's your goal, you will need help in pitching your book to publishers to secure the best deal. That's where a literary agent comes in. On today's episode, I'm honored to talk with Mark Gottlieb, a New York literary agent who is here to give us the inside scoop on how to find and work with an agent. Mark is the vice president and literary agent at book publishing's leading literary agency, Trident Media Group in New York City. He attended Emerson College and was President of its Publishing Club, and established Wilde Press. After graduating with a degree in writing, literature and publishing, he began his career with Penguin's VP. His first position at Trident Media Group was in foreign rights. He was the EA to Trident Media Group's Chairman and ran the Audio Department. He is currently working with his own client list, helping to manage and grow author careers with the unique resources available to Trident Media Group. He is ranked highly among literary agents in overall deals and other categories. Some of the topics I talk about with Mark are: how he became a literary agent, what an agent actually does in the publishing ecosystem, the benefits of traditional publishing, what kinds of projects he looks for and how to stand out as an author, what the most successful authors do when pitching and working with an agent, and some common mistakes to avoid when trying to secure an agent. You can connect with Mark at https://literaryagentmarkgottlieb.com and find out more about the Trident Media Group at https://tridentmediagroup.com. * * * Today's episode is sponsored by Vellum, the go-to book formatting software for indie authors who care about creating beautiful ebooks and print books. Mark Gottlieb with Trident Media Group explores what authors and publishers should know about TikTok's move into publishing, and how they may want to respond.
Mark Gottlieb is one amazing man! I will summarize some of the highlights of his life. While raised in a culturally Jewish, but spiritually atheistic home, Mark, later in life, came to genuine faith in Christ. Mark did his undergraduate studies at The Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington. Then he earned two Masters Degrees in technical areas from Stanford University. From there, Mark moved to the Washington, DC area where he worked with SRI International assisting a governmental agency on its technology. He also taught some graduate courses at GWU on the side. In 1985, Mark launched his own technology firm called DesignTech International, which focused on the design and production of innovative products in the consumer electronics field. His business was a huge success making millions and employing over 100 folks. He then created another company LogicMark in 2006 that was later sold to a private equity group. Mark is happily married to his wife Sharon, and together they have 4 wonderful children and 12 grandkids. He is very active in his local church and for fun enjoys being an incredible photographer and 3D design and printer expert. He has traveled to 88 countries in the world and is listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as an Underwater Violinist! But, on a much more negative side of things, a little over 3 years ago, in the middle of his travel and other activities, Mark had a very tragic mountain biking accident that left him paralyzed at the time from the neck down. But after many hours of physical therapy and the help of technology, Mark is actually able to walk again! In this podcast, Mark describes how he now maintains a solid trust in and love for God despite his on-going physical limitations and pain resulting from his biking accident.

"We look at books in terms of all of the manifestations that a book can take. It could be an audiobook. It could be a film or a TV show or in some cases for some of our authors made into merchandise like T-shirts or calendars or toys. Oftentimes our books find their way into other mediums and so we work across a very wide space between fiction, nonfiction, children's books, and graphic novels. There are a lot of people who work at the agency because we happen to be book publishing's leading agency by number of deals and amount of money for deals going as far back as the year 2000.We also work with very literary authors like Michael Ondaatje who wrote The English Patient and that movie that got tons and tons of Academy Awards and nominations. We have a very big-name children's book authors, representing Wonder by RJ Palacio, which is a #1 New York Times Bestseller. It's still in that spot on the list years after publication, published in over 50 countries. And the movie with Julia Roberts is set to be a Broadway play with the producer of Hamilton. And it's won every major award and is required reading in schools."Mark Gottlieb is a Vice President and top-selling literary agent at Trident Media Group. "I was talking about this with someone the other day, about how there could be AI narrating audiobooks. But what I think it really comes down to is someone with a soul. It's not just the meat and potatoes of the plot of the book, but the actual quality of storytelling, the character development, the message behind the story, things like that. You know, some of the subtle nuances that I think machines will never be able to do, because they'll never have a soul. You know, they'll never be able to fully replicate. They can get very, very close. The Writers Strike in Hollywood. The main reason why the writers are striking, of course, is because it comes down to the bottom line, which is, you know, the dollar. The fact that studios don't want to be precluded from being able to use AI in the place of writers is what's really salting the wounds, but I don't see it, at least not in the very, very near future happening. One, because, like we talked about, no soul in the machine, but two, the technology is a predictive technology. So it's sort of like you ask it a question or you begin writing a sentence and it can predict the next five words and then kind of build upon that. And it can only draw upon what's already out there in its existing knowledge base from the internet, from whatever people ask it. It's not going to have lived experiences like you and me. And the technology is not at the point yet where I think it could be writing a novel. There are a lot of text limitations to it, but I think if it ever did come to pass... Let's imagine a world where AI is like there was a ghost in the machine and could convince almost anyone. I think you'd have a lot of pushback from readers. You'd have a lot of pushback from writers and people who work within the publishing industry."Mark Gottlieb is a Vice President and top-selling literary agent at Trident Media Group. As we're entering a world of advanced AI, what is the future of books? What makes stories enduring? And what role do literary agents play in nurturing authors and bringing great stories to the world?Mark Gottlieb is a Vice President and top-selling literary agent at Trident Media Group. He represents a wide range of authors across genres, many of whom have been awarded prestigious prizes and have secured places on the New York Times bestseller list. Among other achievements, Mark has successfully optioned and sold books to film production companies where they were adapted into blockbuster hits, beloved by audiences and critics. In addition to his work as an agent, Mark lectures on his experiences and craft at such noted venues as the Yale Writers' Workshop, Cambridge University's MSt in Creative Writing program, Columbia Publishing Course, and Sarah Lawrence College Writing Institute. He founded Emerson College's Wilde Press, and the Stamford Literature, Arts & Culture Salon (SLACS), where he currently serves as president."There's a lot of apprenticeship in our industry because historically it had to be that way, otherwise what you would have in publishing - there's still a lot of this - is a bunch of English majors trying to make sense of how to run a business, right?Because book publishing or working at a literary agency - a talent agency for authors like I do - is at the crossroads of creative and business. And if you didn't have that kind of apprenticeship, someone to learn from at the company where you work, then we would all just be English majors just trying to feel our way in the dark.I think that the important thing for people to really know about storytelling is that books are sort of like the oil paintings of the new media. It's a very fine art form, an old art form, and a story exists in everything, whether it's a photograph, a painting, a song, or a movie, it all began with a story. And stories have been here from the dawn of time. They're going to forever be in our existence, but I think people should just always have curious minds and seek out stories and storytelling and try to see the story in everything, not just look at things for face value."www.tridentmediagroup.com/agents/mark-gottliebwww.tridentmediagroup.comwww.creativeprocess.info www.oneplanetpodcast.orgIG www.instagram.com/creativeprocesspodcast

In this episode, we learn how Brookline, MA became the first city in the United States to achieve a tobacco-free generation (TFG). Mark Gottlieb, Executive Director of the Public Health Advocacy Institute at Northeastern University School of Law, Anthony Ishak, Brookline Resident and Pharmacist, and Kate Silbaugh, Professor of Law at Boston University and Elected Town Meeting Representative in Brookline open up about the process, perspective, and purpose behind TFG. The Public Health Advocacy Institute's attorneys are happy to help to determine whether the Tobacco-Free Generation Policy might be a viable approach in your community. Contact them at moreinfo@phaionline.orgAbout ASHASH has been fighting tobacco since 1967. Our longevity is not necessarily something to celebrate – “mission accomplished” would mean going out of business, joyfully. Like most tobacco control organizations, ASH's vision is a world free from tobacco-caused death and disease. But also like most tobacco control organizations, our campaigns sought to mitigate the epidemic, not end it. For ASH, that changed about five years ago.The catalyst for the change at ASH was the adoption of a human rights-based approach to the tobacco epidemic. Analyzing the commercialization of tobacco products through that lens leads to an obvious conclusion: this stuff must be removed from the market. The idea got a huge boost when the State of California decided to put its weight behind a true tobacco endgame campaign. This represents a paradigm shift in public health. California and its allies are no longer interested in just “controlling” tobacco. They're in it to end it.Learn more about ASH CA at endtobaccoca.ash.orgThe music in this episode is provided by Free Sound FX.Subscribe to their channel here.

When the Jewish people celebrate Hanukkah each winter, what are we celebrating? The story of the holiday is the tale of rededicating the Temple in Jerusalem after it had been occupied and defiled by the Seleucid Greeks, who—with the aid of Hellenizing Jews—were not content only to have conquered the land, but also demanded that the Jews living there relinquish their religious way of life. And with that tradition so close to being snuffed out, monotheism itself was nearly snuffed out. The stakes were great, and each and every believing Muslim, Christian, and Jew who walks the earth today owes some measure of debt to the small remnant of a small people who resisted the mightiest military empire on earth. In this podcast, Jonathan Silve is joined by Tikvah's Rabbi Mark Gottlieb to explore the deepest theological meaning of Hanukkah. Their conversation centers on an essay by 20th-century Modern Orthodoxy's leading thinker, Rabbi Joseph B. Soloveitchik. The essay, “The Everlasting Hanukkah,” can be found in a volume of Rabbi Soloveitchik's writings entitled Days of Deliverance. Musical selections in this podcast are drawn from the Quintet for Clarinet and Strings, op. 31a, composed by Paul Ben-Haim and performed by the ARC Ensemble.

Check out our high school offerings at www.tikvahfund.org/hs In our cultural moment, society’s disregard of qualitative reasoning in favor of quantitative analysis–what spiritual master Rene Guenon dubbed “The Reign of Quantity”–has left a gaping hole in issues relating to morality, spirituality, and meaning. In this episode, Rabbi Gottlieb discusses questions such as: What is reason in the 21st century? Do the worlds of philosophical reasoning and empirical analysis speak different languages? Can these languages be meaningfully brought into conversation with one another? Where do they exhibit similarities and how do they differ? Rabbi Mark Gottlieb is Senior Director of the Tikvah Fund and Founding Dean of the Tikvah High School Programs at Yale University. He received his BA from Yeshiva College, rabbinical ordination from the Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Theological Seminary, and an MA in Philosophy from the University of Chicago, where his doctoral studies focused on the moral and political thought of Alasdair MacIntyre. In the year 2020, we live in the shadow of the sexual revolution. The radical changes in sexual mores and family life that American society experienced in the 1960s and 1970s still reverberate today, having made their impact on everything from popular culture and public education to religious life and the most divisive political controversies. What caused this massive social revolution? How should Jews think about what it has meant for our own way of life? And what vision of sex, romance, and family can Judaism offer the world? These are the questions Rabbi Dr. Eliezer Berkovits takes up in “A Jewish Sexual Ethics,” first published in 1976 and republished in 2002 as part of the anthology Essential Essays on Judaism. In this episode, Jonathan Silver is joined by Tikvah Fund Senior Director Rabbi Mark Gottlieb for a discussion of this seminal essay. They examine Berkovits’s life and thought, his understanding of the causes of modern confusion about sexuality, and his distinct vision of Jewish sexual ethics. Musical selections in this podcast are drawn from the Quintet for Clarinet and Strings, op. 31a, composed by Paul Ben-Haim and performed by the ARC Ensemble as well as “Ulterior” by Swan Production.
Though the majority of Jews in America see themselves as left-leaning, the majority of Orthodox Jews lean more to the right. This week, Uri and Rivky spoke to Rabbi Mark Gottlieb, Senior Director of the Tikvah Fund and Dean of the Tikvah Summer Institute at Yale University. We ask Rabbi Gottlieb: What is Tikvah? What is Jewish conservatism? We also discuss some challenges facing modern Jewish education, as well as the lessons that Jews can learn from other religious groups, such as Christians and Muslims.
