Book a call, or get in touch!Listen on PoduramaMy Intuitive Bayes Online Courses1:1 Mentorship with meToday, we're gonna learn about probabilistic numerics — what they are, what they are good for, and how they relate computation and inference in artificial intelligent systems. To do this, I have the honor of hosting Philipp Hennig, a distinguished expert in this field, and the Chair for the Methods of Machine Learning at the University of Tübingen, Germany. Philipp studied in Heidelberg, also in Germany, and at Imperial College, London. Philipp received his PhD from the University of Cambridge, UK, under the supervision of David MacKay, before moving to Tübingen in 2011. Since his PhD, he has been interested in the connection between computation and inference. With international colleagues, he helped establish the idea of probabilistic numerics, which describes computation as Bayesian inference. His book, Probabilistic Numerics — Computation as Machine Learning, co-authored with Mike Osborne and Hans Kersting, was published by Cambridge University Press in 2022 and is also openly available online. So get comfy to explore the principles that underpin these algorithms, how they differ from traditional numerical methods, and how to incorporate uncertainty into the decision-making process of these algorithms. Our theme music is « Good Bayesian », by Baba Brinkman (feat MC Lars and Mega Ran). Michael Cohen is is a DPhil student at the University of Oxford with Mike Osborne. He will be starting a postdoc with Professor Stuart Russell at UC Berkeley, with the Center for Human-Compatible AI. His research considers the expected behaviour of generally intelligent artificial agents, with a view to designing agents that we can expect to behave safely. You can see more links and a full transcript at www.hearthisidea.com/episodes/cohen. We discuss: What is reinforcement learning, and how is it different from supervised and unsupervised learning? Michael's recently co-authored paper titled 'Advanced artificial agents intervene in the provision of reward' Why might it be hard to convey what we really want to RL learners — even when we know exactly what we want? Why might advanced RL systems might tamper with their sources of input, and why could this be very bad? What assumptions need to hold for this "input tampering" outcome? Is reward really the optimisation target? Do models "get reward"? What's wrong with the analogy between RL systems and evolution? #artificialintelligence #ai #oxford #google #deepmind Researchers from the University of Oxford -Michael Cohen, Mike Osborne & Marcus Hutter from the Australian National University have co-authored a paper that cautions on AI Destroying Mankind. Will AI Destroy Humanity? Michael K cohen is studying a DPhil in Engineering Science with Mike Osborne at @University of Oxford His research considers the expected behavior of generally intelligent artificial agents & he is interested in designing agents that we can expect to behave safely. Michael started studying AI safety after readying Nick Bostrom's Superintelligence and became convinced that the default outcome of creating an agent smarter than we are is the extinction of biological life. he got a master's in computer science with Marcus Hutter at the Australian National University. Having studied the actual math behind general intelligence since then, this has remained a major concern of his: as of 2019, from a handful of published algorithms for general intelligence that exist (but are too slow to run), every one of them would attempt to gain arbitrary power over humans. There is little reason to think that fast approximations of these algorithms will be safe by default. Michael along with Mike Osborne from #oxforduniversity & Marcus Hutter from @Google 's @DeepMind has co-authored a paper titled " Advanced artificial agents intervene in the provision of reward" which posits that #artificialintelligence will most likely destroy humanity if it comes in way of its programmed reward systems. https://www.michael-k-cohen.com/ https://au.linkedin.com/in/michael-k-cohen

Greg and I got together and recorded a podcast episode a little while after Nebraska lost to Northwestern in the Big Ten basketball tournament. I was sad. Greg was bitter. Such a frustrating loss after the team had been playing well the past couple weeks. They lead at the end of the first half by double digits. You put these dreams in your head about Nebraska making a run and somehow winning the Big Ten and they don't even get past the first game against the nerds. I was in a cranky mood most of the day Wednesday and because I was in a cranky mood, I went on Twitter and made a lot of Nebraska fans cranky with a tweet about Scott Frost and how he talks to the media. We discuss the tweet and the fallout on this episode. Am I nitpicking? Yes, to a degree I gave Nebraska fans a whole afternoon either agreeing with me or being angry with me so what do you want for free? Greg can remember the entire plot to the movie Revenge of the Nerds from the 80s. I find this astonishing. We discussed the baseball team, and the basketball team and talk about football current events. We discuss the recent survey about Memorial Stadium changes in what people would like to see. I talk about alcohol in the stadium, including a quote from Mike Osborne about how he rather not see alcohol sales in Memorial Stadium. Big Red Business: Moving the ball forward on alcohol sales at Nebraska I worry that our kids will be watching adults buying and consuming alcohol in a place we have long held as special and unique and devoted to showing the best of what our state is about. I think there is plenty of alcohol available at the tailgates and most determined fans can figure out a way to sneak in a few sips if they feel it is necessary. I respectfully disagree with those who said the Garth Brooks concert showed that alcohol should be sold at games. It was a like-minded crowd of fans all support.” I recently sent the manuscript for my next book to my editor. Greg and I briefly discuss what the book is about. I've named it “Manage Your Damage - Heart Attack Survivor”. It's intended for Heart Attack Survivors (is that obvious? I'd like to know) who are dealing with anxiety, anger and depression and all the emotional and physical aspects that accompany heart attacks. We also bag for people to give us ideas for this off-season because I am firmly convinced there aren't many people who care about following Nebraska football that closely so if you have other topics you'd like us discuss we will certainly be interested in hearing about them thank you very much Learn more about your ad choices. Today he sits down with Mike Osborne from MediaMobz. MediaMobz and its GLXStudio Platform enable businesses to easily and quickly communicate their message internally and externally using video.Website Address: mediamobz.com Interviewee: Mike Osborne In the Next 5 years, the biggest change to marketing will be what?: Marketing will be more experiential instead of promotionalWhat percent of your advertising service offerings does media buying make up?: We don't directly do Media Buying - we enable the rapid curation of content that can be used in Media BuyWhy is it important for a business to hire an outside ad agency as opposed to having just an internal marketing director?: Outside agencies have reach and capabilities that most internal marketing groups don't haveMike WhiteWelcome back to five minutes with on BluHorn TV where we find industry experts and talk about what's coming up and what changes in marketing are going on. Joining us remotely from Denver Colorado, we've got a digital executive that comes in and helps provide production and a whole lot of other fun stuff, Mike Osborne with MediaMobz. Welcome to the program.Mike OsborneThanks Mike. Glad to be here.Mike WhiteSo tell us a little bit about MediaMobz and your background.Mike OsborneYes. So MediaMobz is a five year old company. About two years ago, we did a pivot from being a services organization, where we used our platform with larger companies, to turning it into a software as a service to enable more and more people to utilize the tool suites that we had created that allow you to quickly edit content and curate additional content as well as collaborate and find professional shooters and animators and others if you need those services.Mike WhiteSo you provide other marketing departments and ad agencies the opportunity to utilize your software to provide great content for the clients?Mike OsborneYes. So we built the tools with the idea being that instead of needing to go to the video edit creative department for every piece of social content and for every piece of campaign content that that a group wanted to do, you could curate based on those larger programs quickly with our drag and drop utilities and the software as a service platform that we've created that makes it so that anybody can quickly edit professional content.Mike WhiteWhere do you see content going and marketing changes over the next five years from your experience and what you've been seeing in the trends in the industry.Mike OsborneWell there's kind of two phases with that. One is there's a lot more that's going to be kind of what I call self curated content. So it's you know the the middle line semi-professional creation is going to be replaced with more raw with more individual driven content. But more importantly I think that the content is going to be it's going to fall into an experience all category more of a edutainment if you will you know where it's going to get the message across. But it has to be something that drives some type of of learning or interest level for people beyond just advertising.Mike WhiteSo when a company comes on and uses other SAS companies what is important for them to know when researching a software to add on to their service offerings their clients.Mike OsborneWell it's really important for them to understand what they get for what they're buying. To make sure that that there's not a lot of of kind of buried fees and charges because as a SaaS company you've got everything's cloud based which means there's storage and bandwidth in all of these other elements. Rev. Mike Osborne, our executive pastor, share 7 reasons why people don't give, and the reasons to give.
So far in the series we’ve heard that artificial intelligence is becoming ubiquitous and is already changing our lives in many ways, from how we search for and receive information, to how it is used to improve our health and the nature of the ways we work. We’ve already taken a step into the past and explored the history of AI, but now it’s time to look forward. Many philosophers and writers over the centuries have discussed the difficult ethical choices that arise in our lives. As we hand some of these choices over to machines, are we confident they will reach conclusions that we can accept? Can, or should, a human always be in control of an artificial intelligence? Can we train automated systems to avoid catastrophic failures that humans might avoid instinctively? Could artificial intelligence present an extreme, or even an existential threat to our future? Join our host, philosopher Peter Millican, as he explores this topic with Allan Dafoe, Director of the Centre for the Governance of AI at the Future of Humanity Institute; Mike Osborne, co-director of the Oxford Martin programme on Technology and Employment, who joined us previously to discuss how AI might change how we work; and Jade Leung, Head of Partnerships and researcher with the Centre for the Governance of AI.

Sea level rise is a global concern, and on the whole, policy and funding for mitigation aren’t keeping pace. Today on Gen Anthro, producer Isha Salian shares a story about a unique mitigation method in the San Francisco Bay Area – wetlands restoration, which is happening right next door to Silicon Valley’s biggest tech campuses. The Bay Area has a reputation for being environmentally conscious, but even here, local ecologists and policy makers are facing big challenges. Isha originally produced this story for the Peninsula Press, a project of Stanford Journalism. The Gen Anthro version of the piece has been edited by Leslie Chang and Mike Osborne.
What will New York City look like in 2140? Scifi author Kim Stanley Robinson’s latest novel explores a possible future in which NYC is partly submerged, due to catastrophic sea level rise. In this conversation with producer Mike Osborne, KSR discusses the bedrock of science and economics in 'New York 2140,' his writing process for the novel, and of course, the Anthropocene. This is the second time Mike has interviewed KSR! Listen to their first conversation here: bit.ly/2sDV5eA
Are you a vegetarian, a vegan, or a lapsed vegetarian? Do you eat meat and feel a little conflicted about it? No matter where you fall on the spectrum, Paul Shapiro wants to welcome you into the conversation around animal agriculture. Shapiro is an animal rights activist and the Vice President of Policy for the Humane Society of the United States. With producers Benji Jones and Mike Osborne, Shapiro talks about the intersection of the environmental and animal welfare motivations to eat less meat. They also talk about alternatives to livestock slaughter, including plant-based meats and the emerging field of clean meats.
John Holdren was President Obama’s senior advisor on science and technology for eight years. In this conversation with producer Mike Osborne, Holdren discusses Obama’s passion for science and its role in all aspects of American life. He also tells us what it’s like to testify in front of Congress, which he calls “piñata day” (it sounds fun...until you realize he’s the piñata). Mike and John end by discussing the future of science and environmental policy under the Trump administration. Andy Revkin is an award-winning journalist whose life work has centered on reporting about the environment and climate change. He spoke to producer Mike Osborne about his early seafaring adventures, how he got his start in journalism, and his view that climate change is a symptom of a much bigger story about our species coming of age on a finite planet. We also have a short bonus segment featuring David Biello, who has just published a new book about the Anthropocene titled “The Unnatural World: The Race to Remake Civilization in Earth's Newest Age.” Generation Anthropocene is supported by Stanford's School of Earth, Energy & Environmental Sciences and by Worldview Stanford.
This week we bring you an intergenerational conversation featuring David Suzuki, who is a Canadian scientist, activist, and media figure. Since the 1970s, Suzuki has hosted both radio and television shows about the natural world and environmental issues. A self-described “elder,” Suzuki shares his views and long-term perspective on environmentalism with our producer Mike Osborne. Their wide-ranging conversation spans climate change, energy, shortfalls of the environmental movement, and the evolving relationship between humans and Earth’s ecosystems.
Humans have been altering the climate for a long time – but how long, exactly? This question is central to the Anthropocene debate. When did the human population collectively achieve colossal power that can be equated with geologic power? Was it at the start of the Industrial Revolution? Back during the Agricultural Revolution? And how on earth do climatologists pinpoint a date? This week, producer and resident paleoclimatologist Mike Osborne looks at two inflection points in human activity. Mike first discusses research on the global impact of Industrial Era emissions (newly published in ‘Nature’!) with scientists Nerilie Abram and Kaustubh Thirumalai. He then takes a step back in Earth’s history to the early Agricultural Revolution, and climate scientist Bill Ruddiman’s early Anthropocene hypothesis.
There are billions of microbes both in and on our bodies. These invisible organisms form complex ecosystems, which are passed on to us as infants through breast milk, help digest food in our guts, and may even be correlated with a growing list of health conditions like obesity, chronic fatigue syndrome, and autism. It’s no exaggeration to say that human life would not be possible without the microbiome. Science writer Ed Yong has been reporting on the microbiome for over a decade, and has just published his first book, ‘I Contain Multitudes: The Microbes Within Us and a Grander View of Life.’ In this conversation with producer Mike Osborne, he reveals the evolutionary roots of the microbiome, what we know – and don’t know – about microbiomes across the human population, and how we as humans both create an imprint and are imprinted upon by the microbes in the environment all around us. We tend to think of the world in terms of our relationship with it: as individuals, communities, civilizations. It’s harder to think about the Earth before a textual record, before human history. This week, we dive into deep time with paleoclimatologist Page Chamberlain. What did the Western United States look like in the Cenozoic Era? How do the Rocky Mountains affect Europe’s climate? How can the climate 3 million years ago tell us about the climate today? In this conversation, Page and producer Mike Osborne banter about these and other questions surrounding Earth systems of the past.
AAP's Tony Gillies and Mike Osborne talk about the organisation's coverage of Rio 2016 and the role the newswire agency plays in the Australian media landscape.
Think of the Anthropocene as a science fiction thought experiment. We imagine future geologists looking back into the rock record, and trying to pinpoint when humans became the dominant geologic force. In many ways, science fiction is the perfect genre for exploring environmental issues – running out scenarios and “what ifs” to their extremes, and imagining how that world would look and feel. Award-winning science fiction author Kim Stanley Robinson does exactly that in many of his works. In this thought-provoking conversation, producer Mike Osborne sits down with Robinson to talk about his creative process and environmental thinking, what makes for good science fiction, and the genre’s capacity to imagine future societies shaped by climate change. Generation Anthropocene is supported by Stanford's School of Earth, Energy & Environmental Sciences and by Worldview Stanford
Perhaps you've noticed recently that there's been a shift in way experts are approaching climate change. While much of the focus (rightly) continues to be on "bending the CO2 curve downward," there's also been a growing literature on climate adaptation. The sobering reality is that climate change is already upon us – so given that we cannot escape some of the consequences, we're now faced with a whole new series of questions. Who is most at risk? What are the social, cultural, and political forces that render some people more vulnerable than others? And, maybe most importantly, what can we do for the people and places who will suffer most? On today's show, we feature an interview with Petra Tschakert by producer Mike Osborne and student Sarah McCurdy. Dr. Tschakert was the Coordinating Lead Author of the AR5 IPCC report chapter "Livelihoods and Poverty.” In this conversation, we examine the often surprising influence of social dynamics on who will be most vulnerable to climate change, and learn more about the emerging research agenda from an expert on the frontier of climate adaptation. Generation Anthropocene is supported by the Stanford School of Earth, Energy & Environmental Sciences and by Worldview Stanford.

As we hear over and over again, environmental issues are mounting, and the stakes are huge. So how might big data be used to tackle the issues of sustainability, climate change, habitat loss, and species extinction? And even more than that, can it offer us new ways of engaging in a relationship with nature? This episode comes from the Raw Data podcast, produced by our own Mike Osborne and Leslie Chang.
Does climate change mean the end of civilization? Maybe that sounds crazy, but, then again, all the forecasts are deeply sobering. There are reasons for hope, sure, but there are also reasons to believe that humans are unleashing forces beyond anyone's control. If we assume for the sake of argument that we are on a collision course headed for global catastrophe, how do we make peace with that reality? How do we comport ourselves as ethical human beings, and what does it mean to be living through the late stages of this explosive time period? These are just some of the questions that Iraq War veteran Roy Scranton grapples with in his new book, "Learning to Die in the Anthropocene." Drawing on his experiences, Scranton uses the framing of the Anthropocene to capture a deep time perspective and to confront mortality in a way that is rare in public discourse. In this conversation with producer Mike Osborne, Scranton talks about his journey as an intellectual, his decision to go to war, and what it means for a civilization to learn to die.
Welcome to Raw Data! In this first episode, hosts Mike Osborne and Leslie Chang explore how normal, everyday digital footprints can reveal surprisingly intimate facts – like whether your parents are divorced, and whether you own a gun. This podcast is supported by Worldview Stanford and the Stanford Cyber Initiative.
Fire is evolving. The three necessary ingredients for fire - heat, fuel, and oxygen - each appeared at different times in geological history, meaning that fire wasn't always around on Earth's surface. Fire historian Steve Pyne describes the origin and evolution of fire over the past 420 millions years on Earth, including history's true Promethean moment. In a bonus segment, producer Mike Osborne chats with paleoclimate scientist Jud Partin about his new publication exploring the Younger Dryas, the most recent time in Earth's history to experience abrupt climate change. Hear Jud describe what happened as Earth left the last ice age and why he's still optimistic about abrupt climate change today.
