Dem Vinyl Boyz are back diving straight into Nas' debut studio album "Illmatic". This album was released on April 19, 1994, by Columbia Records, produced by DJ Premier, Large Professor, Pete Rock, Q-Tip, L.E.S., and Nas himself. Nas, who was twenty years old when the album was released, focuses on depicting his own experiences, creating highly detailed first-person narratives that deconstruct the troubled life of an inner city teenager. Nas said in an interview in 2001: “When I made Illmatic I was a little kid in Queensbridge trapped in the ghetto. My soul was trapped in Queensbridge projects.” Styled as a hardcore hip hop album, “Illmatic” features internal rhymes and inner-city narratives based on Nas' experiences growing up in the Queensbridge Houses in Queens, New York City. In a 2012 interview, Nas explains what he wants the take away from his album to be, he says "I want you to know who I am: what the streets taste like, feel like, smell like. What the cops talk like, walk like, think like. What crackheads do — I wanted you to smell it, feel it. It was important to me that I told the story that way because I thought that it wouldn't be told if I didn't tell it." The album debuted at number 12 on the US Billboard 200 chart, selling 63,000 copies in its first week. However, its initial sales fell below expectations and its five singles failed to achieve significant chart success. Despite the album's low initial sales, “Illmatic” received rave reviews from most music critics, who praised its production and Nas' lyricism. Thanks for listening! New episode out! This time Sabrina Clarke from Niche on Demand is back once again to talk about another classic album. We're discussing the 1994 masterpiece by Nas…Illmatic. We discuss the hype about this album before it was released, how Nas feels about celebrating the anniversary of this album, and more.
This week to distract myself from how fucked our lives are, I spent some time diving into Nas' 1994 classic 'Illmatic'. The album was huge for me when I discovered it in my teens, but this week I dug into some old reviews and interviews from when the album came out, and also went back and watched 'Wild Style', the 1982 movie sampled in the opening track of the album. That led me onto 'Style Wars' from 1983, and I feel like with those two, and a bit more knowledge of Nas' life growing up in the Queensbridge Projects in NYC in the 70s and 80s, I have a new understanding of where this album came from. I never really thought about it too much, I just knew I loved it, so it was cool to dig in a little.

You can stream the podcast below or subscribe through Apple Podcasts herefrom Spotify here or search for The Top 5 Records Podcast through your preferred podcast provider. Charlie Dark is a good friend of mine and a one time business partner when we founded FUN DMC together. Charlie has led an extremely interesting professional life and we delve into some of that here. Having started as a DJ he was singed to the Mo Wax label as part of group Attica Blues before going on to sign a major label deal with Sony that did not work out at planned. Disillusioned with the music biz he threw himself into self care and off the back started Run Dem Crew a running community which now meets weekly and has tons of members ranging from casual runners to those who run marathons around the globe. It is this ability of bringing people together than I think is Charlie's real strength. He is a vocal supporter of those around him always pushing them to achieve through all manor of initiatives including his latest project Run Dem Radio which will be taking to the airwaves in the upcoming weeks. Some music just hits harder if you can see yourself in the lyrics and find a personal connection to the stories being told in the songs. Queensbridge’s brightest son Nas is unparalleled in the world of hip-hop when it comes to painting a gritty and distinctly raw picture of life in the New York City housing projects where he grew up. And so it’s not hard to understand why comedian Tony Baker was so drawn to the rapper, from the moment he first saw the music video for one of the single’s from his 1994 debut album Illmatic. It mirrored the harsh realities of Tony’s own life growing up in Chicago, which Tony has drawn upon in his incredible work on NBC’s The Carmichael Show, HBO’s All DEF Comedy, and Laff Mobb’s Laff Tracks. BANG! @southernvangard #radio presents the SABAC RED interview session, COVID-19 Edition 02! First and foremost, Meeks and Doe hope everyone is taking care of themselves physically, mentally and spiritually given the situation the entire world is in right now. Second, we’re gonna keep delivering that Smithsonian Grade twice a week as usual, but a little differently as Meeks has to dial in virtually for the time being. Given the special set of circumstances, it’s time for a special interview session. This week, with blessings from Sabac, we’ve decided to give y’all a glimpse into the prep and banter that goes on before the interview officially starts - trust us, you don’t want to skip ahead! So - Sabac Red, where do we start? As a solo artist and as a member of the legendary NON-PHIXION alongside ILL BILL, LORD GOAT (aka GORETEX) & DJ ECLIPSE, he’s been educating, and damn near foreshadowing, us on precisely what’s going on in the world right now for over 20 years. We immediately get into the state of the world today, what’s going down on the ground in the Bay Area and the perspective he has now given life is imitating his art. Don’t worry - we talk music too, folks - and more importantly, his new music with J57! ‘Bac breaks down how their first collaboration in 8 years came together, why the Non-Phixion tour last fall gave him the inspiration to make new music and how his son, DJ LUFU, helped him craft the chorus and ended up being on the track! We also get into a TON of history about his days running promo at WILD PITCH, how his relationship with MC SERCH developed, hearing NAS’ “Illmatic” and O.C.’s “Word...Life” come together in real time - the stories are straight ridiculous, folks. We might have to get a part 2 together, we could have gone on for hours. Alright, enough talking, more listening - cop the new single “Block Cheese & Bocce” from Sabac Red and J57 now, wash your hands and keep your distance while you tune in to what is ALWAYS that #SmithsonianGrade #TwiceAWeek #WeAreTheGard // southernvangard.com // @southernvangard on #applepodcasts #stitcherradio #soundcloud #mixcloud #youtube // #hiphop #rap #undergroundhiphop #boombap #DJ #mix #interview #podcast #ATL #WORLDWIDE #RIPCOMBATJACK Recorded live March 22, 2020 @ Dirty Blanket Studios, Marietta, GA southernvangard.com @southernvangard on #applepodcasts #soundcloud #youtube #spotifypodcast #googlepodcasts #stitcherradio #mixcloud #SmithsonianGrade #TwiceAWeek #WeAreTheGard twitter/IG: @southernvangard @jondoeatl @cappuccinomeeks
BANG! @southernvangard #radio presents the DIRT PLATOON interview session! RAF ALMIGHTY & SNOOK DA CROOK, two Baltimore MC’s that are also biological brothers, dropped a ringer at the top of 2020 in the form of “Get Ya Hands Dirty, - a neck snapping LP that features O.C. (DITC), RUSTE JUXX, GUILTY SIMPSON & the FEL SWEETENBERG, and boasts production from Fel, ABYSS DWELLA, DJ BRAN & NAPALM. We sat down with Raf to talk about the making of the album, why the looming Domino Sugar plant in Baltimore’s Inner Harbor was chosen as the image for the album cover and why it also provides a much deeper, underlying theme for the record. Of course we get into our history bag and talk about the creation of Dirt Platoon, how critical Nas’ “Illmatic” and O.C.’s “Word Life” LP were in terms of influence when they dropped and how that influence came full circle with the O.C. collaboration on the new album. We also dig in on the white-hot Baltimore underground, the strength in numbers approach they’ve rolled out with local, like-minded rhymesayers such as ILL CONSCIOUS, GUY GRAMS, JAMIL HONESTY and JAY ROYALE - and what we can expect from them and the extended crew in 2020. Oh yes, Vangardians, there’s much more where this came from - so stop that dilly dallying! Scoop up “Get Ya Hands Dirty” today and after you’ve done that push play on this fine, fine interview that is one-hundred percent #SmithsonianGrade #TwiceAWeek #WeAreTheGard // southernvangard.com // @southernvangard on #applepodcasts #stitcherradio #soundcloud #mixcloud #youtube // #hiphop #rap #undergroundhiphop #boombap #DJ #mix #interview #podcast #ATL #WORLDWIDE #RIPCOMBATJACK Recorded live February 3, 2020 @ Dirty Blanket Studios, Marietta, GA southernvangard.com @southernvangard on #applepodcasts #soundcloud #youtube #spotifypodcast #googlepodcasts #stitcherradio #mixcloud #SmithsonianGrade #TwiceAWeek #WeAreTheGard twitter/IG: @southernvangard @jondoeatl @cappuccinomeeks
Recently Nas said that he’s tired of celebrating “Illmatic” and wants to move on from that part of his discography. Hearing Nas talk about Illmatic got me thinking about what makes an album so impactful. Of course, the album has to be incredible front to back. That’s a given. But what I think could be the most important aspect of creating a timeless album, has NOTHING to do with the music and EVERYTHING to do with the FEELING of the time period attached to that album. From NWA’s Straight Outta Compton, Jay Z’s The Blueprint, Nas’ Illmatic, Kanye West’s The College Dropout, 50 Cent’s Get Rich Or Die Tryin and Kendrick Lamar’s To Pimp A Butterfly, here’s how the time period effects how we experience the music.
The crew discusses arguably the most critical acclaimed hip-hop album of all-time Nas' historic 1994 debut Illmatic, and how it continues set the standard lyrically and production-wise 25 years later. This week Branden and Maurice keep it mostly about music as a lot of your favorite albums are celebrating anniversaries right now. Nas' Illmatic and Outkast's Southerplayalisticadillacmuzik both turn 25 years old this month and Eminem's Slim Shady LP turns 20 years old. Being the music journalists and historians they are, they discuss each album's impact and if any of them can be mentioned in the "greatest debut album ever" discussion. Show producer and Live Hip Hop Daily founder Herb also chimes in a little too. Other topics discussed include Jay-Z's The Shawn Carter Foundation taking teens on an HBCU tour, Avengers Endgame movie and Nicki Minaj going on tour with Chris Brown. 4:00 - Is Nas' "Illmatic" the greatest debut album ever? 8:00 - Outkast's "Southerplayalisticadillacmuzik" turns 25 years old this year, will we ever get another album from them? 14:00 - Eminem's debut album turns 20 years old, was it his best album? 20:00 - Schoolboy Q's new album CrasH Talk drops Friday, what does he have left in the tank? Will Jay-Z singlehandedly boost HBCU admissions? Will Avengers Endgame be good and how are they planning on bringing Black Panther back from the dead? Nicki Minaj is going on tour, but will people buy tickets? Confidence. The name can refer to several ideas and concepts. Apply it to the world of beat-making and you have a term that exudes high standards and carefully composed compositions. What a fitting name for a hip hop producer who has just that! My guest this week is an authentic golden era hip hop producer bringing back that 90's feel with an updated sound. Born in Philly back in ’77, he’s no stranger to classic sounding hip hop and authentic street anthems. We chat about growing up in Philly during the golden age of hip hop as a young man, training your ear to be a tip-top producer, problems in the industry and the controversial reason why Nas’ Illmatic is considered one of the best rap albums of all time (spoiler alert, it ain’t his lyrics!).
We're back with the first of our last run of episodes, and today's episode is a two-for-one deal: we mostly discuss Terry Gilliam's 1996* time travel thriller 12 MONKEYS, with Bruce Willis, Madeleine Stowe and Brad Pitt, and weave throughout discussion of the 1962 French featurette that inspired it, LA JETÉE. Discussed in this episode: how does time travel work (or not) in these movies? What do we think happens after the events of 12 Monkeys? Is there anything La Jetée does better? What lessons do these movies have for modern audiences? Did you find all the character actors from The Wire in 12 Monkeys? How about the Nas Illmatic posters? And, what are we to make of Terry Gilliam's career overall? This is what we have to say about it... This is the first episode in our new series THE KEEPERS—stories of activist archivists, rogue librarians, curators, collectors and historians—Keepers of the culture and the cultures and collections they keep. We begin at The Hip Hop Archive and Research Center at Harvard. In the late 1990’s the students of Dr. Marcyliena Morgan, Professor of Linguistics at UCLA, started falling by her office, imploring her to listen to hip hop. They wanted her to hear this new underground sound and culture being created, the word play, the rhyming, the rapping. They wanted her to help them begin to archive this new medium. “Hip Hop *is *an archive," they told her. Dr. Morgan wasn’t an archivist and she didn’t listen to hip hop. But she listened to her students and saw a new kind of soundtrack emerging from the cracks. Bit by bit she opened her office and her resources and began to collect the history and material culture of hip hop. Some 15 years later the Archive has gone from her office at UCLA to Harvard, where she and Professor Henry Louis Gates founded The Hiphop Archive & Research Institute at the W.E.B. Du Bois Institute whose mission is to “facilitate and encourage the pursuit of knowledge, art, culture, scholarship and responsible leadership through Hiphop.” Along with gathering everything about hip hop for preservation and study, the Archive created the Nasir Jones Fellowship for scholarly research in the field, named for Nas, one of hip hop’s titans, and the “Classic Crates Project,” a collection that aims to archive 200 seminal hip hop albums in the same Harvard music library that houses the works of Mozart, Bertolt Brecht and Edith Piaf. The first four—Nas’ “Illmatic,” “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill,” Kendrick Lamar’s “To Pimp a Butterfly” and “The Low End Theory” by a Tribe Called Quest have been inducted into the University’s Loeb Music Library. You’ll hear from Professor Marcyliena Morgan, Nas, Professor Henry Louis Gates, Nas Fellow Patrick Douthit aka 9th Wonder, The Hip Hop Fellows working at the Archive, an array of Harvard Archivists, and students studying at the Archive and the records, music and voices being preserved there. And we take a look at the Cornell University Hip Hop Collection, founded in 2007, through a sampling of stories from Assistant Curator Jeff Ortiz, Johan Kugelberg author of “Born in the Bronx,” and hip hop pioneers Grandmaster Caz, Pebblee Poo, Roxanne Shante and more.

This week’s guest is producer and drummer Daru Jones. Most known as the drummer for the likes of Detroit hip-hop artist Black Milk and megastar Jack White, Daru Jones has been one of the go-to drummers in the music industry playing for a who’s who of hip-hop artists, even playing on Nas’ Illmatic performance at the Kennedy Center with the National Symphony Orchestra. Residing in between Brooklyn and Nashville, Daru Jones talents have earned him global respect throughout the music industry. During our interview, we talk about how it is performing with Black Milk and Jack White, what it takes to be a drummer that works with so many artists, and his upcoming projects including the band DMD alongside guitar wunderkind Marcus Machado and legendary Living Colour bassist Doug Wimbish. Each episode, the guest is asked to suggest someone from their life/career that should be on Fresh is the Word that would have good stories. Daru Jones chose his DMD bandmate Doug Wimbish. BANG! @southernvangard #radio presents the Sam Beaubien of Will Sessions interview session! Will Sessions burst onto the international hip-hop scene on 2011 with the release of Elzhi’s “Elmatic” - a jaw dropping tribute and remake to Nas’ “Illmatic”. Friend of Southern Vangard Radio, Peter Agoston, connected us with the founder and leader of the band as they prepare to embark on a summer tour, which includes a show in NY and their first show London as they headline the Hook & Sling festival. We get into a little history as Sam breaks down the band’s beginnings at Wayne State University, early hip-hop production for the Athletic Mic League’s Buff1 (aka Jamall Bufford of The Black Opera) and playing on Mayer Hawthorne’s debut album. We couldn’t help but get on our record nerd ish, so we also talked with Sam about their early 45 releases on FNR and conversations about hip-hop with the Detroit funk legend Dennis Coffey. Did we mention they also just released a new beer - “Deluxe Ale” - with Black Lotus Brewing in support of their latest album, “Deluxe”? There are lots more goodies folks, but we can’t give everything away here - so put this interview in your podcast queue, go cop “Deluxe” today and remember it’s ALWAYS that #smithsonian #grade #twiceaweek // southernvangard.com // @southernvangard on #itunes #podcast #stitcherradio #soundcloud #mixcloud // #hiphop #rap #undergroundhiphop #DJ #mix #interview #podcasts #ATL #DETROIT #WORLDWIDE Recorded live June 11, 2017 @ Dirty Blanket Studios, Marietta, GA southernvangard.com @southernvangard on #itunes #podcast #stitcherradio #soundcloud #mixcloud twitter/IG: @jondoeatl @southernvangard @cappuccinomeeks
*We apologies for the audio issues* In this episode we discuss album covers in hip hop. We cover the time period between now and the early 90’s. We discuss common trends like Bling, Baby’s, Squads, Artsy, Stylized, and Minimal. Some of of the covers we discuss are Juveniles 400 Degreez, Nas Illmatic, The Roots multiple squad covers and Kanye’s albums. We talk about the vast differences in the thought and care put into the Graduation cover vs. Life of Pablo. When talking on the different covers we pick out some of our favorites like Biggies Ready to Die, A Tribe Called Quest’s Low End Theory. We spend some talking about the use of stock images on album covers and contrast that with the use of commissioned artwork like Logic’s Everybody. We also talk about controversial album covers like Ice T’s Power and Nicki Minaj’s Anaconda and the if they were actually good beyond the shock factor. We also spend time talking about if album covers still matter in the streaming age. We conclude the Run the Jewels has one of if not the most effective branding strategies in hip hop. irst of all, apologies about some of the sound quality at Clive and James Cable's end. They were in a particularly echoey room and had the mic resting on a table which seemed intent on sending every little vibration through the mic. We'll know for next time! In this episode we've got Alex Wain hosting as James Cable, Clive and Michael Johnson review the music they've been listening to recently. It's a particularly eclectic mix this episode, here's a full list of the albums discussed: Andrew Hill - Point of Departure (1964) Yuck - Stranger Things (2016) Nas - Illmatic (1994) Women - Public Strain (2010) Daughter - Not to Disappear (2016) Pinegrove - Cardinal (2016) Please help our expansion efforts by telling your friends, following us on Twitter @StickAroundCast, liking us on www.facebook.com/StickAroundPodcast, and leaving us 5 star reviews on iTunes. You can get in contact with the show on Twitter and Facebook or you can e-mail us at stickaroundpodcast@gmail.com. We'll read out (and answer) your questions and comments in the appropriate segment. Cheers guys :-).
