Practicing Harp Happiness
Play Your Way to Progress: How NOT to Practice This Summer - PHH 110

Practicing Harp Happiness

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 26, 2023 36:27

What are your plans for your harp playing this summer? Do you have pieces you want to learn, maybe Christmas music you want to get a head start on? Do you have a few exercise or etude books that you plan to get through so your fingers will finally do what you want? Are you thinking summer is a great time to learn your key signatures or chords or improve your note reading or learn to improvise? Or maybe all of the above? If your summer harp list looks anything like this, let me hear you say, “Amen.”  Most of us start out the summer with big plans, and not just for our harp playing. We have this imaginary idea that summer is endless and less busy and we'll have time to get to all those things we can't manage in the other three seasons. That's a classic example of wishful thinking. Life doesn't really slow down just because the days are longer and warmer. What usually does slow down is our drive to achieve, and that's actually a healthy thing. Continually pushing ourselves to achieve and accomplish drains our emotional gas tank. If we don't take the time we need to refuel we will eventually be running on fumes. Balancing this with our desire to keep making progress and our fear that if we don't keep practicing we will lose everything we've worked so hard to achieve is the real crux of the problem and what we will be talking about today. I don't want you to lose the ground you've gained this year by taking time off. But I absolutely believe that switching up the way you practice - or maybe not even actually practicing at all - is essential to keeping your connection to your harp healthy and vibrant.  You know me; I love setting goals and working toward them. You can achieve great things with dedication and passion. However, it's important to be aware of the hidden traps that might sabotage your efforts, the very real costs of staying focused all the time. I also want to share with you what you can do instead. We are not going to give up on progress, just because we're not goal-focused. Instead, I'll show you how you can actually move your playing ahead without really practicing. I promise, it's not a trick. It's real progress and it's almost laughably easy. My apologies to those of my listeners in the southern hemisphere, where it isn't summer right now, but by listening to this podcast now, you're going to be able to plan your next summer the right way ahead of time. Not a bad idea, right? So let's get on with our discussion about how you can indulge your desire to slow the pace this summer and still feel like you're moving the needle with your harp playing. In this episode, “play expert” Jeff Harry joins up with “fun expert” Dr. Kathryn Guylay for some actionable, transformational steps to a better year in 2021 and beyond. Listen for this amazing quote that Jeff shares from Steven Johnson: “You will find the future where people are having the most fun.” We have seven mantras from the show, but first, a Warning: You can get exactly what you want, and not be happy. Here are the seven mantras: Mantra #1: To avoid the “I'll be happy when” syndrome, remember the quote: “expectations is the thief of joy”. Mantra #2: Let go of expectations when they don't serve you (Jeff explains the paper airplane exercise he does with some clients). Mantra #3: In every decision, we can claim Who We Are….Or try to (endlessly and needlessly) chase our worth. Mantra #4: Increase your fun, joy, and play “index” through a review of your day, week, month, and year. (If your index needs a boost, use gratitude, appreciation, and curiosity to find more fun, joy, and play moving forward). Mantra #5: Follow two steps to increase play right away: 1) self-soothe first (shower, music, walk, etc.), and then 2) get bored, then curious; get ready to meet your inner child! Mantra #6: Leverage your own community of friends to find more play. Reach out to them and ask two questions: 1) what value do I bring to you and your life? and 2) when have you seen me most alive? Mantra #7: Remember that every conversation is an option: do you choose a transaction or a transformation? Tom Davies, GeoWizard Tom Davies, better known online as GeoWizard, is an English YouTuber who uploads videos based around the online map game GeoGuessr. In early 2019, Tom had felt a craving for an adventure — one that would push him mentally and physically and, with any luck, leave a sense of accomplishment at the end. He attempted to walk across the country of Wales in a completely straight line. He didn't upload the footage until summer of the same year. He attempted to cross from the English border near the town of Oswestry, all the way to Dolgellau on the west coast. He made it just over half way before temporarily giving up, taking a 5 day break, and returning to walk the rest of the distance. Tom split the adventure into five parts, with each episode lasting just over 30 minutes. Each episode is entertaining and humorous as you would expect. Tom has managed to accrue a massive following who is simply amazed at his ability to guess all kinds of random locations on the game GeoGuessr, a game that requires some intermediate travel and geographical knowledge. So gamers will be trying to guess the locations of remote towns or villages, roads, and other areas that might not be obvious at first glance.. There are dozens of other videos with Tom making impressive guesses on YouTube. No amount of money can buy time and you shouldn’t feel like you’re mindlessly wasting your life away Many people choose careers that don’t make them happy. For what? For money, for social status. Only to find out that they would all do it differently if they had the chance. You only have one life, so don’t waste it working somewhere you hate just because of the money. Work for something you care of love and see yourself living better. It is more important that you are happy and get to do what you are passionate about every day/ Be conscious To be conscious is being aware of one's own existence, sensations, thoughts, surroundings, etc. Take a look at your life as if you were somebody else looking inside your brain. Observe what thoughts you entertain and what patterns you do everyday. Notice that some will be positive and some will be negative. These negative thoughts and actions are the ones holding you back and they need to be stopped. The positive thoughts and actions you entertain and do every day need to be magnified and multiplied. M21 Wellness Guide Wellness Force Community   Power Quotes From The Show   Establishing New Responses to Difficult Situations   "We're conditioned to respond in a particular way; like we all have a very conditioned mode of responding emotionally to situations. We either shut down, we fight, we get angry, we get defeated, we feel sad, we get excited. Most people have a very predictable way of how they respond to what we would call resistance. If you can really understand what those stop signs look like, you can start to just run plays and run experiments on how to rewire but also understand how to set up conditions so that when those stop signs show up, you condition yourself or train yourself to do something different." - Jeff Agostinelli   Building Up Resiliency "Resilience and resistance go hand in hand. A lot of times when we go through transitions and navigate change, resistance comes on strong. It's really our job to look those thoughts and feelings of resistance in the face and go past them, start to be resilient, and build up the ability to pursue during tough conditions instead of succumbing to gravity and pressure of the past." - Jeff Agostinelli     Sometimes Love Swings A Sledgehammer "A lot of people need not a drill sergeant but somebody that is going to call them out on their shit and give them direction. Many times that direction is going to be gentle and other times you have to be willing to take out the sledgehammer and shatter those beliefs in a super loving way. Sometimes love looks like being tough on other people so that they realize that if they keep doing something, other people are going to suffer forever." - Jeff Agostinelli   Links From Today's Show Organifi Gold Leave Wellness Force a review on iTunes Dr. Joe Dispenza The Next Level Podcast episode 175: The Power of Movement to Increase Joy and Build Connection with Kelly McGonigal Gary Vaynerchuk Steven Pressfield The War Of Art by Steven Pressfield Carl Jung Marie Forleo Buddha's Brain by Rick Hanson Hardwiring Happiness by Rick Hanson Resilient by Rick Hanson The Joy of Movement by Kelly McGonigal Jessie May Wolfe Jordan Peterson Do The Work by Steven Pressfield The Next Level Podcast episode 104: 3 Simple Things to Manage Overwhelm Do The Work by Steven Pressfield The Next Level Podcast episode 043: How to Play Your Way to An Anxiety-Free Life with Charlie Hoehn M21 Wellness Guide The Next Level Podcast episode 121: How to Be More Resilient with Sarah Sherwood Wellness Force Community The Next Level Podcast Jeff Agostinelli Facebook Instagram Twitter YouTube LinkedIn   About Jeff Agostinelli With a background in studying pre-med biology and working as a private chef, Jeff Agostinelli wanted to take his knowledge about food, healing, natural health, and a healthy lifestyle to help others. Think back to when you were a kid and exercise was something that you enjoyed, that didn't feel restrictive or limiting. This is the nostalgia that Darryl Edwards hopes to evoke through his Primal Play methodology. Focusing on finding physical activities that people actually enjoy doing, his Primal Play methodology is for those of you who hate exercise, are looking to surprise yourself, or just want to try something new. Darryl finds his joy in helping people find activities they enjoy that don't feel like exercise. He focuses on how you feel immediately, not the long-term results. The heavy and negative connotations some associate with exercise are non-existent in Primal Play, where play is used as the application of functional movement, but in unexpected and unpredictable ways.  Through his methodology, Darryl helps people remember that playing gives you the ability to learn much more about yourself, all while getting faster, stronger and healthier. The Primal Play methodology was created to inspire others to make activity fun while getting stronger and healthier. His technique is focused around a practical view of fitness, helping people get fit for real life, not just to look good. Darryl has written multiple books, has been published in multiple media outlets, and has dedicated himself to helping people make physical activity fun again. Darryl travels around the world spreading the word about Primal Play and helps people remember a time when exercise wasn’t a chore.   On Today’s Episode How running away from a gang of thugs turned into one of Darryl’s most valuable lessons Why humans are the ideal physical generalists How to avoid becoming a fitness cyborg The importance of both serious and fun play How to learn to enjoy movement and exercise again   Quotes  “That nostalgia and enjoyment around movement is what I wanted to regain as an adult and I wanted to make sure that it was sufficient enough for it to tick all my boxes as an adult.” (15:53)  “The best forms of play, in my opinion, are when you take it really seriously and when you are very mindful, because you are less likely to set yourself artificial limits and ceilings.” (20:50) “Many of us just need to move more. Many of us need to explore what our bodies can do. And many of us need to be confident and happy with what we can and can’t do.” (43:10)   Resources Mentioned In This Show Darryl’s New Book Animal Moves Primal Play Follow Darryl on Twitter @FitnessExplorer   Check out the full show notes here! Today's enchanted health guest on the show is Peter Ragnar. He's an internationally recognised author of twenty-nine books, as well as a speaker, qi gong master, and spiritual mentor. He has close to sixty years of heart-based experience as a martial artist and an expert in health, fitness, and organic living, and is absolutely rocking the longevity lifestyle. In his 70s now, Peter still trains world-champion kick boxers and Martial Arts Hall of Fame inductees, while continuing to peel years off his life through embodying longevity and anti aging ways of being, philosophies, techniques and practices. We discuss these at length.  The conversation is heavily grounded in key distinctions and teachings of how to break free of the mental lethargy that drags most into a life destined to end in degeneration, and step onto a path that is fun, exciting, engaged in life and, of course, adding years and years to your life, cultivating true vitality. We touch on breath work, herbalism and martial arts training, so you'll have some key take aways to ground into your days and begin embodying the path of longevity.  Links: Peter's site http://www.longevitysage.com/ Peter's Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/sensei.peter.ragnar?fref=ts R.E.A.C.H. Young people have been sold out of the Sydney housing market by a range of powerful interests. The current diagnosis by government of cause and solutions leaves a lot to be desired and mainly consists of forming yet another task-force that in reality only pays lip service to addressing the ongoing affordability crisis. We discuss the strategies you can adopt to change this situation.

Aprillian and Glanthur discuss the many play styles of WoW. Talk about what they've been doing, re-entry into WoW after taking a few days off, developments in the Guild Bank and going back to Basics to RTM! What We've been doingAprillian Glanthur: Re-Entry OK, It's that time of year again -- when everyone goes to the mall.  So, work has really picked up.  And, because of that I have very limited time for World of Warcraft.  Now, I know a lot of people think that there's ALWAYS time for WoW, and you're right.  However, last week also marked the release of Mass Effect, an Xbox 360 RPG that I had been waiting patiently for.  New always takes the place of old, but I find that WoW is like your comfort foods.  You may want to try snails, you may even like snails, but grilled cheese sandwiches will always be delicious.  But, going back into WoW after some time away can be disorienting.  Here are some things that I do to help get me back in the saddle again (which ever mount it happens to be): - Challenge allies to duels outside a capital city.  This will help you refamiliarize yourself with your hot keys and keyboard layout.  The point is that it's OK to die.  Better than running to your corpse across STV. - Look over your quest and remember "The Tubes" are a great resource.  Get your bearings and remember all those quest items and XP you were lusting after - Go shopping.  Nothing gets you back in the mood than a little spending spree at the AH.  What good is fake gold if you don't spend it.  Splurge and get those blue leggings you have been craving.  If you're low on gold, then spend some cash on materials for professions.  Leveling your professions also helps get me back into the swing of things.      Play your own way  Working out Guild Bank issues Back to Basics Strength (STR)     Increases your Attack Power with melee and ranged weapons. Increases the amount of damage you can block with a shield. Agility (AGI)     Increases your Attack Power with ranged weapons. Increases your Armor. Increases your chance to score a critical hit with a weapon. Increases your chance to dodge attacks. Increases your Attack Power with melee weapons (rogue, hunter, and druids in cat form only).  Stamina (STA)     Increases Health. Increases your pet's Stamina. Intellect (INT)     Increases Mana. Increases your chance to score a critical hit with spells. Increases the rate at which you learn weapon skills. Increase your pet's Intellect.     Spirit (SPR)     Increases Health regeneration rates out of combat and Mana regeneration rates when not casting spells. Next week Dual Boxing reintroduction
