What does it mean to show up vulnerably when it comes to topics you don't know? How do you balance good intentions with the reality that sometimes you will be in the wrong? When it comes to issues of belonging and inclusion, we tend to stick to people who we know are like us in some way. This is often unconscious, but as a result - people are marginalized in the process. In this week's episode, Alex Wait answers the question, what role can straight white men play in "social justice"? And bigger than that - how do we build lives that seek to welcome others in, even when they're from a much different background than ourselves? Audeliss is an executive search firm that helps businesses recruit diverse talent at a senior level; and INvolve is a global inclusion consultancy that champions diversity and inclusion in business. In this in-depth discussion, Suki shares his mission to increase diversity and inclusion across all levels of business, explaining his aim to accelerate the pace of change and representation for different communities by distributing wealth, which will allow minorities to have more influence in society. He shares his experiences of being LGBTQ+, explaining that around 62% of LGBTQ+ people “go back into the closet” when they start their first job; he reveals the inspiration behind the annual ‘OUTstanding Role Model List', which celebrates LGBTQ+ business leaders. Suki shares his perspective on the current abortion law debates in the United States, explaining how making abortions illegal will only perpetuate the cycle of income inequality as less privileged groups will not have equal access to specialist treatments.Suki then moves on to explain how the Black Lives Matter movement encouraged him to hold CEOs and businesses accountable for taking action on race inclusion by asking them to commit to setting targets at all levels and publish an annual public report. Finally, they delve into Suki's brand-new book ‘How To Get Your Act Together: A Judgment-Free Guide to Diversity and Inclusion for Straight White Men' which offers positive advice to support society's most influential group to create an inclusive environment for their employees, and have educated conversations about diversity.

From Gov. Ron DeSantis signing Florida's so-called Don't Say Gay bill to Gov. Greg Abbott issuing a Texas directive that would classify medical care for transgender adolescents as “child abuse,” Republicans across the country seem to be doubling down on anti-L.G.B.T.Q. policies. Their argument? It's about “parental rights.” But the playwright Tony Kushner has seen this kind of battle play out before. His “Angels in America” hit two-part play examined the AIDS epidemic and L.G.B.T.Q. life in the United States. And Kushner says this new wave of legislation is just the latest incarnation of a clampdown on rights under the conservative “fantasy” of a nation under “exclusive control by white straight men.”In this conversation, Kara Swisher asks Kushner how far — or not — the nation has come since “Angels” and the AIDS crisis. Kushner traces a through line from Ronald Reagan to Donald Trump and discusses how anger is a byproduct of progress. “There's a complicated anger on the left, on the progressive side,” he says. “Presumably people on the progressive side of things believe in the possibility of constructing a more just world. Author Jane Ward has been studying this question for some time and outlines her ideas about the tragic effects of heteronormativity in her new book, The Tragedy of Heterosexuality (New York University Press, 2020). In our interview, we discuss her compelling case for why queer people, and lesbian feminism in particular, have much relational wisdom to offer their heterosexual counterparts, and why only a deepening—rather than queering—of their sexuality can save them. Claire also fences with foil and longsword. Since recording the episode she has taken the post of Programme Manager at the National Videogame Museum. In this episode we have a fascinating conversation about how a traditionally white, male perspective of history has overlooked many women, people of colour and those from the LGBTQI community. Did you know that one of the foremost fencers of the 18th century was black, and another was trans? I mention two African-born emperors of Rome. These are: Lucius Septimius Severus, who was a Roman emperor from 193 to 211. He was born in Leptis Magna, at that time a Roman province in Africa. His eldest son, Lucius Septimius Bassianus, commonly known as Caracalla, was Emperor from 211 to 217. In the second half of the podcast we talk about Claire's webcomic The Girls' School of Knighthood and also discuss depictions of women holding swords in art, particularly Judith slaying Holofernes. Maria Manuela Goyanes, artistic director of  Washington DC's Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company, is a theatrical force of nature.  She arrived from New York City's Public Theater in 2018 where she had been Director of Producing and Artistic Planning. Her role there included planning and supervising programming at all of the Public's five main stages, as well as Shakespeare in the Park and Joe's Pub.  She did all this in addition to teaching and mentoring theater artists as well as volunteering for the job of executive producer for 13P--a collective of mid-career playwrights who each wrote and directed one play which would get a full-scale production which Maria supervised. Did I mention that while she was at the Public she was also associate producer for Fun Home, Straight White Men and Hamilton?  A first-generation Latina-American, Maria Manuela Goyanes is an ideal fit for Woolly Mammoth which is known for producing new plays that are edgy, challenging, and thought-provoking.  It's a mid-sized theater with large footprint that nurtures talent and takes chances. It's adventurous theater—unafraid of making audiences uncomfortable and tackling social issues head-on--challenging both its artists and audiences in ways that are sometimes fun, sometimes difficult but always interesting.  In this podcast, Maria discusses what makes Woolly Woolly, how she brings the fullness to her background to her role as artistic director, and the challenges and opportunities this moment offers theater in general and Woolly in particular. In case it's not obvious, the title's a joke.  But you can guess from the title, this episode ends up having some combative moments, but I know some of you love that! For those of you who don't, this may not be the show for you. This is Carlos' second appearance and this time around we have a loose focus on gender, but race comes up throughout. This is actually a throwback episode (recorded on January 30th 2020) from when Carlos drove down from Portland. We recorded two shows while he was down here, so here is the second one being released. I preface this because my speaking style has changed dramatically since the recording of this episode! I'm releasing it because it's the last episode of my stockpile, and the probably second to last political show I will be doing. Starting from here, episodes will typically come out within a week of them being recorded! This is going to start with episode 105 with Cedric Galloway in a two-hour special. In that episode, I get out all of my political leanings in one rant, so that I can leave them behind and start fresh. No need to rehash my opinion and add my voice to the cacophony dividing the country. My show will be more just two people hanging out, sharing laughs, and some cool ideas/knowledge we've picked up along the way.  Without further ado, here is my second to last political episode: Carlos Kareem Windham is a wordsmith, musician, activist, playwright, comedian, Carlos Kareem Windham has spent the better part of the last two decades performing for audiences and speaking with students, teachers, and organizers on stages and in classrooms across the globe.  Carlos’ works are defiant, explosive explorations of the relationships between race, class and gender in the U.S. and abroad. Whether through the medium of storytelling, lyrics, workshop, or stand-up Carlos takes every opportunity to speak truth to power.Currently, Carlos serves as emcee and lyricist with Wallace, freestylist and frontman for Lo Speed Chase, is a regular open-mic er and up and coming feature in the Portland stand-up scene, is a regular guest on Mylin & Melanin Podcast, and serves Principal and Founder of El Porvenir Services, LLC. El Porvenir Services, LLC is on a mission to bring communities into the future, and to center the voices of the most impacted in the reclamation of their power in the intersection of race, class, and gender. Through El Porvenir, Carlos works for the creation of just ecosystems where people maintain long-term relationships across difference, in the creation of outcomes that provide equitable opportunities for the most excluded. Carlos has his own show now, Smoke & Mirrors, where he speaks with some incredible guests about similar topics as we did today! Ty Defoe is the kind of performer I (Laura Heywood) gravitate towards because he breaks so many boundaries and has dedicated his life to amplifying voices and stories of communities who are too often disregarded, overlooked, and grossly underrepresented — specifically, but not limited to, trans* and indigenous voices. I first saw Ty onstage in Broadway’s “Straight White Men” — notable because neither he nor the character onstage identifies as straight, white or male. Which was sort of the point.  In addition to his Broadway work, Ty is the co-creator of Ajijaak on Turtle Island, a beautiful theatrical experience with puppetry and music that recently concluded its run at the New Victory Theatre on 42nd street. He has also worked with the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, the Guthrie Theatre in Minneapolis, The Museum of the American Indian in Washington DC, and many more. He is a hoop dancer, a storyteller and shape shifter. In a 2015 article on HowlRound, Ty describes himself this way: “I am from Ojibwe Nation and Oneida Nation (People of the Standing Stone). I am two-spirit. I live in New York City. I am a writer. These ways of identifying are only parts of me, but as I move through the world, I find that I can’t take off my identities like a jacket and simply hang them in the closet. They are interwoven, and in creating any theatre that has verisimilitude or humanity, I must lean into the intersection of identities.” I am so drawn to this idea, and so delighted to bring in this unique human being who lives so proudly in the center of a beautiful venn diagram of identity.

Being a straight white male comes with tremendous privileges. The secret clubs come to mind where we hand each other the keys to the kingdom and recommit ourselves to denying access to all others. With all of this privilege, it's about the disenfranchised people who produce Broadway shows bring to the stage, Straight White Men, a satirical takedown of all this privilege. From Amy Tan to Michelle Kwan to Constance Wu, there are many Asian American women who have achieved great success and are upheld as leading figures of the community. But sometimes (and especially online), Asian male support is muted or reluctant. Is it resentment at seeing women in power at all? Or does it have anything to do with the feeling that only by closely allying with whiteness can Asian women succeed at the highest levels in America, thus leaving Asian men behind? Is that what’s behind some of the online harassment of Asian women by some Asian men? In this special-format podcast, Jess poses simple but direct questions for Teen, Oxford, and Jong to answer in hopes of further illuminating the Asian male perspective. "Hollywood is the great value-dictator of our time." - Amos Gebhardt The third episode of our season on belonging and exclusion is here, and this month we are conversing across many disciplines, and setting a record with the number of voices featured. Our guests are writer and performer Candy Bowers, artist and filmmaker Amos Gebhardt, and playwright and theatre-maker Chi Vu, three artists who have challenged the dominant narratives of gender, culture, and race both in their work, and as prominent public speakers. In this episode, recorded at FCAC and moderated by RMIT Deputy Dean of Media Lisa French, our guests speak about the female gaze on stage and screen, and what to do with Jill Soloway when being woman-identifying is only one of the parts of your identity. "So I worked on a play called Straight White Men by Young Jean Lee last year at MTC. And I thought what was extraordinary with that play is that - I really don't think Melbourne is at the same level regarding consciousness and dialogue in regards to whiteness and privilege - more than half of the audience saw one play, and all the intersectional feminists saw a different play. Literally, people laughed at different jokes. I read the play and I thought it was so funny straight away, and most of the guys I was working with, including the director, didn't think it was funny, didn't understand it. And I thought: 'This is a really clear case study in the fact that I've lived a life reading between the lines, and they've lived a life on the line. The line has been for them'." - Candy Bowers This panel ‘Female Gaze on Film and Stage’ was originally recorded as part of the program for WOW Melbourne at FCAC, and was presented in partnership with the Australian Centre for the Moving Image. It’s the very end of summer in Melbourne, it's a lovely Thursday afternoon, everyone is just settling in for an afternoon of discussions. It's a beautiful conversation: it is a rare occasion to hear some distinguished voices of the Australian independent arts speak about the intersectional experience in a space that is safe and expansive, outside of the carnival of outrage and provocation that so often greets those who speak about diversity. Discussed in this episode: decolonising ourselves, Jill Soloway, inclusivity and being included, very small paths, being Best Female Performer for playing a straight man, what is cultural safety?, how bilinguals are not like two monolinguals in the same body, Back to Back Theatre, creating little worlds, what's wrong with make-up artists in Australia?, and the female gaze. "As an artist, creating a culture of safety, however you define it, is the only way you can make work over a long term." - Chi Vu Bibliography: Jill Soloway on The Female Gaze, Master Class, TIFF 2016 Ben Neutze: Candy Bowers on Australian Theatre's White Patriarchy: Burn it Down, The Daily Review, Oct 2016 Ben Neutze: Review: Lilith the Jungle Girl, The Daily Review, Sep 2016 Stephanie Lai: Review: Coloured Aliens by Chi Vu, Peril, Apr 2017 Dylan Rainforth: Amos Gebhardt's Nude Portraiture Celebrates Difference, The Age, Feb 2016 You can subscribe to Audiostage on iTunes or any number of Android platforms, friend us on Facebook, or follow us on Twitter. Gary interviews playwright Antoinette Nwandu and director Danya Taymor during rehearsals of Nwandu's play Pass Over, on site at the Steppenwolf Theatre. We are attending a press performance on June 13 and cannot wait! They share fascinating insights about the process of creating a world premiere, with Antoinette developing the script throughout the rehearsal period. These two are absolutely inspiring as artistic collaborators. So much mutual respect, affection, and humor. Booth One would love to be in the rehearsal room! Antoinette describes Pass Over: “At its core, this play asks us collectively to consider the value of black lives, specifically the lives of young black men who are not extraordinary, who are not entertainers, they’re not athletes, they’re not secret math geniuses. They're young men who might never get better, who might never be different. This play challenges us to envision a society that does not ask these young men to prove their worth.” Inspired in part by two young black men Antoinette taught in community college, she riffs on ideas and themes from both Samuel Beckett's Waiting for Godot and the Book of Exodus. The cast includes friend of the show, Jon Michael Hill; co-founder of Definition Theatre Company, Julian Parker; and Ryan Hallahan, from the acclaimed cast of Straight White Men, also at Steppenwolf. Ms. Nwandu tells us the Cinderella story about how this play came to be produced at Steppenwolf. Thrilling! Not only a great director, Danya is also a translator. Her story about the translating partners she works with is fascinating. Antoinette also tells us Danya has "world class knowledge of all theater." Our producer is wanting a trivia contest between Danya and Gary... A couple of our favorite quotes from the interview: Danya: "The truth of this play can shift on a dime." Antoinette: "I write with a lot of jagged tonal shifts." When asked who they would like to spend a month being mentored by, Danya chooses European director extraordinaire Romeo Castellucci. Antoinette chooses the remarkable playwright Caryl Churchill. Good calls! Danya and Antoinette are two theatre artists that are without a doubt "going places". Booth One is so excited to follow their skyrocketing careers.

Why Political Correctness is So Annoying...and Why it Works

Among the many striking aspects of the 2016 presidential race is this: 'political correctness' is regularly touted as one of our greatest societal evils. But it's not just Republican candidates: 68 percent of all Americans think 'P.C.' is a big problem, according to this Fairleigh Dickinson University poll.  The question is, why? In this episode [click "Listen" above], we explore how the policing of language can cause anxiety for many of us, while also forcing us to think about race and gender and other issues. Additionally, we turned to people who think about words for a living—writers—and put this question to them: Does "political correctness" shape today's art and expression? And if so, is that a problem or a necessity? Below are just a few of their responses. Feel free to weigh in! 1) Mohsin Hamid, author of How to Get Filthy Rich in Rising Asia and frequent contributor to the NYT Book Review. “I think power shapes language: what we can say, what we choose to say. And of course power shapes art. ‘Political correctness’ is just a description for certain ways in which some aspects of power are affecting language. There are many other ways. Think of what happened to Jeremiah Wright, President Obama's former preacher, when he violated the norms of ‘patriotic correctness’ in his sermons that were posted online. A firestorm. There are also issues of ‘religious correctness’ that one faces in, for example, Pakistan, where I live. The list goes on and on. And no artist is unaffected by them.”  2) Branden Jacobs-Jenkins, playwright, An Octoroon and Appropriate, says: 3) Teju Cole, pictured below, author of Open City and photography critic at The New York Times Magazine. “I must have missed when political correctness enslaved human beings, killed them with infected blankets, exiled them from their homes, prevented them from voting, sexually assaulted them, and destroyed their neighborhoods with malign economic policy and bad policing. We have a number of very serious problems — ongoing issues or the aftermath of historical issues — to think about; political correctness is not one of those serious problems. I personally love political correctness because a vehement opposition to it is a pretty reliable way of flagging those who want to be jerks about other people's pain without having to pay any social price for being so.”  Teju Cole (Martin Lengemann) 4) Young Jean Lee, filmmaker and playwright (Straight White Men), says: 5) Julia Alvarez, author of How the Garcia Girls Lost Their Accents and A Wedding in Haiti. “The writers I most respect are inclusive and diverse and their works include and even humanize politically-incorrect characters.  (Just think of Flannery O'Connor's!)  These writers do not legislate or promote a certain point of view, but they increase our level of awareness about the world we live in. I love the Chekhov quote that the task of the artist is not to solve the problem but to state it correctly. A character might be racist or a situation in a story unpalatable, even offensive, but if these work in the service of the story/poem, then an artist should not censor herself with other considerations. But writer has to have a certain level of awareness, even if her characters and the situations they are in do not.  We, as readers, have to feel that those deeper issues are being addressed and a more capacious vision being sought.” 6) Manil Suri, author of The City of Devi and The Death of Vishnu. “Political correctness is such an obvious and juicy target when artists allow themselves to fall victim to it that I feel it should be one's moral duty to go after it with the sharpest implement available. I'm sure I succumb to it myself on occasion (being Third World and gay and a person of color, etc) but can only hope someone shows enough mercy to puncture the 'art' that results.”    What do you think? Listen to my question and then click on "Reply" and tell me. We may use your comment for a future story!

Not Gay: Sex Between Straight White Men (New York University Press) A straight white girl can kiss a girl, like it, and still call herself straight—her boyfriend may even encourage her. But can straight white guys experience the same easy sexual fluidity, or would kissing a guy just mean that they are really gay? Not Gay thrusts deep into a world where straight guy-on-guy action is not a myth but a reality: there’s fraternity and military hazing rituals, where new recruits are made to grab each other’s penises and stick fingers up their fellow members’ anuses; online personal ads, where straight men seek other straight men to masturbate with; and, last but not least, the long and clandestine history of straight men frequenting public restrooms for sexual encounters with other men. For Jane Ward, these sexual practices reveal a unique social space where straight white men can—and do—have sex with other straight white men; in fact, she argues, to do so reaffirms rather than challenges their gender and racial identity.Ward illustrates that sex between straight white men allows them to leverage whiteness and masculinity to authenticate their heterosexuality in the context of sex with men. By understanding their same-sex sexual practice as meaningless, accidental, or even necessary, straight white men can perform homosexual contact in heterosexual ways. These sex acts are not slippages into a queer way of being or expressions of a desired but unarticulated gay identity. Instead, Ward argues, they reveal the fluidity and complexity that characterizes all human sexual desire. In the end, Ward’s analysis offers a new way to think about heterosexuality—not as the opposite or absence of homosexuality, but as its own unique mode of engaging in homosexual sex, a mode characterized by pretense, dis-identification and racial and heterosexual privilege. Daring, insightful, and brimming with wit, Not Gay is a fascinating new take on the complexities of heterosexuality in the modern era.Praise for Not Gay“Clear-eyed and unsqueamish, Not Gay defiantly insists that sex between contemporary American straight white men is in fact meaningful sex that can't—and shouldn't—just be hand-waved away. Jane Ward provides a timely and convincing corrective.” —Hanne Blank, author of Virgin: The Untouched History“Not Gay is nothing less than a breath of fresh air. This book is certain to change the way that we think about heterosexuality’s relations with the homoerotic.”—Roderick Ferguson, author of Aberrations in Black: Toward a Queer of Color CritiqueJane Ward is associate professor of Gender and Sexuality Studies at University of California Riverside, where she teaches courses in feminist, queer, and heterosexuality studies. Her published essays have focused on a broad range of topics including feminist pornography, queer parenting, gay pride festivals, HIV/AIDS organizing, same-sex marriage, and the social construction of heterosexuality.
