As mentioned on this morning's show, I'm delighted to share and expand on the news that Good Morning Portugal! is officially joining forces with ExpatsPortugal.com (-:I arrived in Portugal three years ago, and soon started a podcast and radio show. As the Covid pandemic struck earlier this year, I decided to start a daily livestream on Facebook, keeping English-speaking expats informed and safe. This has now become an established morning show and a fun and informative daily focal point for many established expats, people wishing to move to or travel in Portugal, and even Portuguese folks living abroad!More recently, given our mutual aims to help more people enjoy life in Portugal, I have been working more closely with Expats Portugal, especially on the popular 'Portugal Calling' webinar series. This has now blossomed into an official invitation to join forces, which I have gladly accepted. The heart of Good Morning Portugal! - the daily shows and growing sense of connection and community - will carry on as usual, and our evening shows will undergo some slight changes, Monday to Wednesday, as we reach out to our friends on the other side of the Atlantic. The Good Morning Portugal! Wine Club (now on its 16th tasting adventure) will continue on Thursdays at 9pm, after the now weekly 'Portugal Calling' webinar at 8pm. On Fridays, the new 'Expat Man Cave' will grow as a blokey, jokey gathering for expat men of a certain age, enjoying and adapting to life in Portugal.I am so grateful to all who have supported the GMP! project with coffees and seed donations as well as your precious attention and contributions. You have helped me keep a roof over my family's heads and food on our table. Thank you (-:From hereon in, I suggest you become at least a free member of ExpatsPortugal.com, if you aren't already. And please consider becoming a premium member, which will give you all you've come to enjoy from me, and a whole host of other, additional benefits and discounts. You can do that here.I'm really looking forward to being an integral part of the ExpatsPortugal team and helping more people enjoy the wonderful lifestyle I speak of and celebrate daily on the shows, YouTube channel and podcast.Stay tuned, and see you soon...---The links from this morning's show:Gordon Ramsay spotted in Portugal making second National Geographic series - https://www.facebook.com/portugalpages/photos/a.498957123558685/3337742766346759/?Covid spike - https://www.theportugalnews.com/news/second-ever-highest-number-of-new-covid-19-infections/56117Covid controversy in the form of the 'Great Barrington Declaration' - https://www.portugalresident.com/doctors-and-scientists-speak-out-against-covid-policies-in-eight-languages-including-portuguese/Last night's Expats Portugal webinar - https://expatsportugal.com/event/portugal-calling-lisbon-is-hot-right-now/Last night's GMP! First and foremost, Black lives matter. This has always been the case but it took us until now to post it here and we will do better. At Earbuds we work hard to ensure that our newsletter is filled with podcast recommendations that include episodes produced and hosted by women and POC. The newsletter is curated by a different person each week, who sends us their theme and 5 podcast episode links. If we find that the list contains all white men, we reply asking for a more diverse selection. Sometimes, we fall short. Sometimes curators don't reply and we give up. We won't do that anymore. We’re holding ourselves accountable and you can, too. As a white woman, I am reading, listening, and donating to funds and organizations that center and support black lives and work to fight racism. And I'm learning a lot. I will continue to do so. It's on all of us to see to it that real change comes from this movement. -Arielle NissenblattWelcome to episode 36. It covers the week of June 8 - 12, 2020.This week’s theme is: *Amplifying Black Voices.*More on this podcast:Each week on this podcast, we’ll share the information that's within the newsletter put out by EarBuds Podcast Collective. EBPC is a listening movement. We send a weekly email with a theme and 5 podcast episodes on that theme, and each week is curated by a different person. Anyone can curate a list -- just reach out!We partner with Inside Podcasting to bring you the week’s top podcast news stories. The Only One in the Room Damona Hoffman Is The Only One Who Thought She Was Undatable61 minutes Host Laura Cathcart Robbins is a writer who went to a writer's conference a few years back and discovered that out of 600 attendees, she was the only Black woman. Her podcast discusses peoples' "only one" stories. In this episode, she interviews Damona Hoffman, a dating coach and relationship expert. Code Switch A Decade Of Watching Black People Die23 minutes Code Switch is always brilliant. This episode, though, is required listening for all white folks. On Tuesdays, Sam interviews an author, artist, or anyone who's got something interesting going on. On Fridays, he hosts a roundtable discussion featuring newsfolk, as they discuss current events. In this episode, Sam interviews Yvonne Orji, who plays Molly on Insecure. 1619 THE ENTIRE SERIES 1619 is an incredibly powerful series produced by Nikole Hannah-Jones of the New York Times. Here's the description: In August of 1619, a ship carrying more than 20 enslaved Africans arrived in the English colony of Virginia. America was not yet America, but this was the moment it began. No aspect of the country that would be formed here has been untouched by the 250 years of slavery that followed. After the first thirty seconds in Arabic, Ustadh Michael Wolfender provides a translation in English praising our Master, the Creator of the Universe. In tough times, we look for answers, for peace. Often without such solutions in sight. These worldly tests can help us achieve our place in paradise, based on our response. It is exactly these circumstances, Brother Michael explains, that brought Prophet Muhammad ﷺ the best news ever - that his ﷺ enemies would be cut off and he ﷺ would receive a gift to help quench believers’ thirst on the Day of Judgment. In Surah Al-Kawthar, Allah declares Prophet Muhammad ﷺ as the final messenger for all mankind. And we learn the benefits believers receive when accepting this. On Fridays especially, send salaam and peace on our prophet ﷺ. Those who do, earn ten times the benefit. Angels deliver these messages directly to his ﷺ grave. To help explain this, Brother Michael uses modern inventions of computers, DNA testing and lie detectors - and how they illustrate actions described more than 1400 years ago during the Qur’an’s revelation, such as being able to see your eternal destination as you await the Day of Judgment. Prosperous Coach Podcast
Getting into a Rhythm in Your Coaching Business

Prosperous Coach Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later May 28, 2019 9:55

This episode is short and sweet. And it's part of the Smart Mindsets & Habits series. In these early days of your coaching business, before you are booked with clients it may be tempting to fit your coaching business into whatever time you have left in the day. The truth is that you can't build a business on fumes. And you certainly can't grow a business that way. There's a mindset that goes with that fit-it-into-the-downtime approach. And it's usually not a conscious one. It's the hobbyist mindset. Or the perpetual student mindset. Please know that I get it ... if you're a stay-at-home parent, adding in a new business to your day is totally disruptive. You have a rhythm of what you do day to day. You know your priorities. Now, you have to re-make that rhythm to a new beat. It's also super challenging to add a new business in when you've got a full-time job. And, if you're adding a business to a full-time job plus caring for children, it's downright heroic, if you ask me.Even so, if you want a thing to thrive, it needs regular care and feeding. It needs a rhythm. Find one that works for you now and build up from there as you can.Coaching Business Office HoursWhen I decided to become a coach, I negotiated my job into a part-time consulting position to have time to build my coaching business. But, I'm embarrassed to say, even with the clear boundaries on my job and more at-home time, I didn't use my "free" time well on behalf of my business. And I didn't make much progress for that first year.I realized that I needed office hours. That I needed to think of myself going to work for my business. That made an immediate difference in my earnings and satisfaction as a coach.Setting office hours was my first step into the CEO role of my coaching business. It signaled to my friends and family that I was no longer in student mode. And it motivated me to get creative and productive on a higher level than I was before. Now, you may only have one hour each day for your coaching business. If that's the case, that is your office hour.Tell your family, your friends and colleagues that you're not available to them during that hour unless it's a true emergency. Then do the power hour.Know before you sit down to your desk what you're going to do with that hour. Make the most of it. Turn off your phone, close out your email and get focused.Block Your TimeObviously, the more time you find for your business day to day, the faster you'll grow so that you can replace your job with coaching. You'll need time for serving clients, client management and in the first few years, you'll need significant for marketing and getting the word out to your target audience that you have something valuable for them.Having a rhythm for your coaching business means you're highly productive and work less. Here's my rhythm:I'm open for client calls only Tuesdays through Thursdays from 8:00am to 3:00pm my time. Sometimes coaches worry about having to work weekends and nights because they think that's the only time their clients will be available.I've come to learn that clients will make themselves available when I'm available. I never take clients on weekends or after 4:00pm.I use Mondays for creating podcasts and other projects. On Fridays, I just check and respond to email, otherwise, I'm free. That makes it really easy to take a 4-day weekend whenever I want to. And I schedule doc and hair appointments only on Monday or Friday. When I am working on tasks, I break my time into power hours.I fit the small ta

Welcome guys. Welcome to Houston Home Talk. My name is James and I am excited today I am joined by Beverly Langston from bath fitter and Beverly and I met just actually just not even a week ago at the sip and stroll and Katie and it was great getting a chance to meet you. How are you doing about really?[00:55] BEVERLY: I'm great. How are you?[00:57] JAMES: I'm doing great. Great. I wanted to have you on. SO as soon as I saw you in the booth, I wanted to have you guys come on and talk about what you do because I am a…in addition to roadster. I'm an investor as well and I think what you guys do can help anybody, but I was very intrigued by it and wanted to have you on. Thank you for coming on the show.[01:21] BEVERLY: Thanks for having. We're excited.[01:22] JAMES: Yeah, it's pretty cool. Why don't you tell, tell us a little bit about what it is that you guys do, how you got into it, a little bit more about bath fitter and I think it's pretty interesting what you guys do. I really do. Why don't we just start there and you introduce yourself to the audience.[01:40] BEVERLY: Sure. I'm Beverly Langston. I'm the event manager for Bath Fitter here in Houston. We are actually an international company. We're in Canada and the United States all over North America or United States. Our corporate office is right outside of Nashville, Tennessee. I've been here for about a year. I do mostly events and marketing and it's just a really amazing company, quite a unique product. It was started and the mid-80s about my [inaudible], four to be exact by three brothers, the Cotton Brothers. It started because one of them had had a baby and his wife said, I don't want to bath my baby in disgusting bathtub. He trying to figure out an economical way to repair the bathtub and make it look better and for it to be cleaner so that his wife would be happy because happy wife, happy life, right?[02:32] JAMES: Absolutely, yeah.[02:33] BEVERLY: They developed this system. The product is made out of acrylic which is really great for bathrooms because the bathrooms firmly are made…you have lots of tile, lots of grout, those kinds of things and they're porous which means they absorb the water. That's why you get all that mold and mildew in your bathroom which nobody likes and you can never ever get rid of. The acrylic is not porous. It will not ever mold and mildew ever.[03:01] JAMES: Okay. [03:02] BEVERLY: Very, very easy to keep clean. There's no scrubbing involved. Basically it's a spray cleaner if you have hard water, you either squeegee it or wipe it off with a cloth and that's it. That’s it. It's super easy to maintain as well which is a wonderful thing. Bath Fitters philosophy is we want everybody to walk into the bathroom and smile and be happy. We want to give you joy. We should all love our homes and our spaces so much and unfortunately the bathroom isn't one of those places where a lot of people are like, I just really hate it because of things like mold or mildew or maybe things are not updated so that's where the product, you know, it's great. It's a great solution for construction too because what we're most known for is our tub over tub system, which is where we can create a brand new bathtub that goes directly right over your existing bathtub. There's no like tear outs which is wonderful. Even if we do take out a product, it's still also a one day install. It's a very short timeframe.[04:06] JAMES: If you guys are going over the top of existing are there situations where maybe you're not able to just go over top or fruit for most bathrooms, I guess you guys have the ability to be able to really literally just go over top of everything that exiting. Is there any situation where maybe… [04:27] BEVERLY: There are. Sometimes there are plumbing issues that we might we have to people get. Most of the times we cannot go over fiberglass tub because the structure of them is weaker.[04:36] JAMES: Okay.[04:37] JAMES: We still have solutions for that. We can actually just remove those tubs that don't work and put in a brand new bathtub. Still with the product, still the great acrylic. Another thing that we do, we do showers as well the same way. We have a wall system that will go right over your tile. One of the greatest things about our wall system and we're the only company that does it, is it's seamless. There's in the corners is to bang on the material. There's no caulking or grout. It's not going to mold or mildew,[05:11] JAMES: That’s awesome. [05:13] JAMES: That’s is awesome. Literally there is no seam. I'm assuming then the corner is it rounded or --[05:16] BEVERLY: It depends on the material. We actually bend onsite. People always say to me, well, you're not going to get it through my door. Yeah, we will. You'd be surprised. You think you have a small doorway. We will get through it. The other thing that we do that's really, really popular now for a plethora of reasons is we take the tub out and turn it into a standing shower using the same footprint as that tub. You've got a long shower. I think a lot of people are in a point where they're not really taking baths like they used to like it's a waste of space. A lot of people also want to change it because of mobility issues, getting up and over the top. If you're older and if your short, it's very difficult so removing the tub and not having that 18 inches to get up and over is very, very popular. [06:07] JAMES: It's funny that you bring that up because a lot of people, when I sell homes or when I'm listing homes as a realtor, a lot of people for some odd reason they still ask for Tub. Most people don't use it.[06:20] BEVERLY: Yeah, yeah.[06:21] JAMES: Is baffling to me. It really is. I have a home in San Antonio where we actually built it with no tub. For some reason when we tried to sell it, like that came up at certain points, but I think now and that was I was eight, nine years ago. Now I think a lot has changed because of, like you said, the mobility for a lot of people as we start to mature, I'll use that word. Yeah, the tub. I have a tub. I never use it even now. My kids use it. That's awesome that you guys do that. Now do you guys have more like you, I guess your typical client. I don't know if you really have a typical client. I'm assuming you guys have people that are just looking to renovate, remodel, maybe investors. Maybe I could see that part of your product being awesome for a lot of people that may do an investment property where they don't have to come in and rip out. You guys don't have to come rip everything out. You could go over the exist and that's a big time saver because I've done some remodels and it can be expensive if I'm having to rip everything out[07:30] BEVERLY: Exactly, especially if you have an investment property where you have a tenants that leaving and you need to make a repair. It's pretty quick repair. The tub actually whether the shower whatever you're using has to get manufactured because it's all custom done so it's manufactured for you. Once the install happens it's a one day and the great thing is that with construction where there's a lot of dust and debris and dirt and it's sort of a messy process. We're not like that at all. The bathroom probably will be cleaner than when they walked into it. You've got a fresh, clean bathroom ready to show to your next tenant, which is wonderful. For residential, the product has a lifetime guarantee on it. For a rental facilities that's considered commercial. It doesn't have that lifetime guarantee, but I will tell you it really will last a very long time especially because in tenant situations people don't clean them as if was their property. That’s okay because the product is so sturdy and hold up so well to that. That is okay. I've talked with people that have had a rental property and the tub and the wall has been in there 30 years. Other than having to replace the caulk every few years it's been fine. [08:39] JAMES: Got it.[08:40] BEVERLY: We also do a lot of properties like hotels and apartment complexes, dormitories, lots of dormitories because kids.[08:50] JAMES: Okay. That’s makes a lot of sense.[08:51] BEVERLY: Yeah. Yeah, college students destroy things. They get in product for this. [80:59] JAMES: Absolutely. [09:00] BEVERLY: Yeah.[09:01] JAMES: Now you guys have locations. You said it started andI did not realize that you guys have been around for that long. You said the eighties. Where did this, I guess where the company originate and then where are you guys located in the Houston area? Because we're in the Houston Area. Where are you guys located? Where did things originate.[09:20] BEVERLY: It originated in Canada. That’s where the Cotton Brothers are from. Got some branches out in Canada, some stuff mostly with people who are buying in the franchises. There are some franchises store out there, but mostly they're all corporately owned stores. It is a US based company now though because our headquarters are in Springfield, Tennessee, which is right in [00:09:43] in Nashville.[09:43] JAMES: Okay. Yeah. Got it.[09:44] BEVERLY: It's manufactured here in the U.S. We manufacturer on acrylic. Everybody that works on it or all Bath Fitter employees. We never have third party. From the person that answers your phone call to the person who installs it. We are all Bath Fitter employees. We're behind our company. For Houston we are actually in the Garden Oaks District of the Heights, right off of Shepherd and Crosstimbers. We have a show room. We are welcome for people to come in and see the showroom and you have to that. If they're interested we'll send a consultant out to you and they have a mobile showroom they can bring you. If you are around and you wanted to come say hi, we love it. We love having people in here. We can give some more information here and let you see all the different models. We have garden tubs in our shower. We have the standard tub type of the tub. We have tub to shower. We also can change your shower into a bathtub, both ways. Really. Anything you want to do with your tub or shower, we can handle[10:52] JAMES: Got it. You guys can…not only just replace what is existing. You can actually do the remodeling more or less instead of ripping the tub complete out and just make it into a full shower?[11:05] BEVERLY: Yeah. We can. Yeah. Yeah. There's different color [inaudible], wall options as far style and things that people like. We even do showers for those who are wheelchair bound, who need an ADA shower.[11:20] JAMES: Yeah. I was just about to ask you about that because that's a big thing. I was about to ask you about ADA, being ADA compliant because I get a lot of clients that are looking for that so that is something that you guys have the ability to do as well.[11:32] BEVERLY: You can [inaudible] too as far the type of thresholds that we have with them or seat option. We are very, very verse also in the safety because bathrooms are very dangerous places no matter who you are. They're slippery. We have lots of different options for safety, like grab bars, different types of grab bars and we really work with our customers to make sure that they're getting everything they need so that everything is safe and secure and usable and accessible for them.[11:59] JAMES: That is awesome. In Houston that is the only location that you guys physically have here in the Houston. Go ahead…how can people look if they want to look on the website. What is the website? Go ahead and I'll post the website as well for people to be able to go and look and see what you guys have to offer. what is the website?[12:18] BEVERLY: Sure. The website is www.bathfitter.com.[12:22] JAMES: Okay.[12:23] BEVERLY: The website has got a great tool as well. You can watch some videos on how the process works. It also got a build your bathroom tool that you can imagine what you like, would it look like?[12:36] JAMES: that's awesome. That is awesome. Is it almost like a preview of what your bathroom would look like if you chose this or this --[12:47] BEVERLY: It's a virtual room to build your bathroom. [12:50] JAMES: Right[12:51] BEVERLY: On the computer so it's not going to look like it does in reality. It will show you how things will fit in certain ways. A lot of times when our design consultants go out, they use that tool as well on there. They always bring an iPad with them so that people can see and imagine it because sometimes when you actually see it put together, you're like I really don't like that soap dish. I want to be bigger. You could play around with it and see what you like.[13:18] JAMES: Got It. Got it. That is awesome. If anybody wants to reach out to you to have either email, phone number and I'll post that as well so people can reach out to you. I've got a lot of people that I work with but a lot of investors and a lot of clients that are looking for remodeling. I think you guys are very cost effective way of doing it which is really, really was intrigued when I saw what you guys did. Do you have like either a direct phone number for yourself or a… [13:44] BEVERLY: Sure. My office number is 713-691-4110. I also have a company cell phone and you can call me anytime on that which is 281-636-3560 You could e-mail me at blangstonatbathfitter.com. You're welcome to come by the store which is 356 Garden Oaks Boulevard.[14:08] JAMES: Awesome. What are your hours? What are your hours, Monday to Friday. Saturday. Tell us so we'll know what that is as well.[14:14] BEVERLY: We are Monday through Thursday. There's somebody here at 7:00 p.m. On Fridays we're open until 4:00 and on Saturdays there's somebody here from 10:00 to 2:00. Like I said we can bring everything to you. Our sales staff is great. Our consultants are great. If you can't make it in during those hours, we can come to you and we do have evening and Saturday hours or you book appointment for our consultants to come out.[14:39] JAMES: Awesome. Awesome. On the consultant, when they come out, I know you said everything was custom made so they look at the customer. Once they it out like is there…I'm assuming it's probably obviously case by case as far as how long it takes, Do you have… [14:59] BEVERLY: The process is really for us to give anybody a pricing we have … just like any home construction we've got to come out and take a look at what's going on in a bathroom.[15:05] JAMES: Sure. Sure.[15:08] BEVERLY: They'll come out. The first thing they generally do if they go into your bathroom and take out a lot of measurements because those measurements are what gets sent in when you decide to purchase. [15:18] JAMES: Right.[15:20] BEVERLY: They'll sit down with you and go over all options and all the colors and if there's any underlying problems with the bathtub or the bathroom, what those solutions would be. We do have a master plumber on staff. If there's some drainage problem or a leak somewhere, we can definitely get that fixed because we don't want to put a band aide on a problem. We want to make sure everything fits perfectly. The design consultants are really amazing people. We do understand sometimes we need to leave you with the estimate and let you think about it and they're not ever going to pressure anybody. When you decide that you want to purchase it, all of that goes to our plant in Tennessee. The product actually gets manufactured to fit your specifications. For instance, if Joseph Smith ordered a tub, it will have Joe Smith's name on it throughout the entire process up until it's actually put into their bathroom because that is Joe Smith's bathtub.[16:17] JAMES: Yeah. Awesome. Once you get it back, the actual installation, once it's put together, the actual installation process is about basically a day.[16:26] BEVERLY: It's one day, one day, unless we come across some problem. There are issues just like any construction. Sometimes you up a wall or whatever. For instance, we did a tub to shower renovation, we pulled that tub out and there was a tree root growing up underneath it[16:43] JAMES: Yeah.[16:44] BEVERLY: Our sales guy really tried to take care of that or installer trying to take care of it himself, but then he was worried he was going to damage the foundation. We stopped what we were doing. We made sure to have a professional…we met with the homeowner. They had somebody come out to fix that issue. We came back and finished it. The goal was one day but occasionally things happen.[17:08] JAMES: Yeah, it's amazing what happens behind walls. The reality is nobody really knows until there's a problem[17:18] BEVERLY: Yeah, unfortunately my guy – there's the times where I thought they're not going to finish it today and they always be like I was with a woman, very sweet lady. She'd had a knee and a hip replacement maybe six weeks out of surgery and decided she didn't want the bathtub. She wanted to shower and we took the tub out and there was this huge amount of concrete coming up from the foundation. We had to go run a Jack Hammer and it's still not done in one day. All done in one day.[17:44] JAMES: Yeah. It's amazing what happens. Unfortunately when these houses are being constructed whether it's new construction or 10 years or 15 or 20 years. The stuff that happens, it's amazing. I've seen a lot. I've been working for a few builders that I've worked for in the past and seen what happens as homes are being constructed. Yeah, it's amazing what can happen. So that's …[18:08] BEVERLY: Yeah. There had a been a ton of these structural support for the original tub that was there which was not the best option. That’s what happened. Our installers worked very hard to try to get everything done within that one day timeframe. I have done actual construction of a bathroom prior to me working here and not without a bathroom for a couple of weeks. That's not fun. We don't our customers to experience that.[18:34] JAMES: Yeah. No, I've, I've had to do the same thing. Yeah, it is a big hassle. Yeah. We like our bathrooms. We like our bathrooms and when were disrupted from being able to use one is it is definitely it disrupts my whole household. That's awesome that you guys…[18:52]BEVERLY: That’s what the construction does disrupt because there's so much dust and debris everywhere. Yeah.[18:57] JAMES: Awesome. Alright, I will post your website. Give me the website one more time Beverly.[19:03] BEVERLY: www.bathfitter.com.[19:06] JAMES: Okay. I will post that and then I'll also put your contact information. You guys share, reach out to Beverly. The service is, it's amazing. As soon as I saw it, I wanted to have you come on and talk about this because I think it's a really, really great way for people to save if they're looking to remodel or if someone's got an investment property. I think is a great alternative to ripping something completely out and investors like to save money. Actually we all like to save money. It's not even just for that matter who it is and I just think what you guys offer is a great alternative.[19:42] BEVERLY: It's great way to do it. Not have to redo it again in a few years. How To Speed Up Client-Learning With The Incredible Power of Infotainment

What causes clients to keep coming back? Is it information? Or could it be entertainment? For too long we've treated teaching and learning as an activity that needs endless slides, pages and work. But what if clients get better results having fun? And what if you had a ton of fun as well? Let's find out how to speed up client learning with some pretty minor tweaks in your e-books, courses, presentations and webinars. Click here to read the transcript on the website:  #166: How To Speed Up Client-Learning With The Incredible Power of Infotainment ===================== When my mother-in-law, Preta, was in her twenties, she was teaching at Sunday school. Like most Sunday schools, the kids were there to learn about the Bible. However, my mother-in-law decided to teach the girls how to sew tiny dresses for their dolls. Within weeks of her starting up, all the girls wanted to be part of her class. Ironically, this made the other Sunday school teachers jealous. They complained to the “higher authorities”, and Preta was called in to explain herself. “We've heard you're not teaching them about the Bible, and instead only involving them in play”, said the person in charge. “You can come in and test the knowledge of the kids,” retorted my mother-in-law, “and you'll find they know they're well-versed in their Bible studies”. You can clearly see the wisdom of play in this story, can't you? You can also see how people in charge resist it a lot, even though it's apparent that we all have a maddening streak of playfulness we can't seem to shake. That when learning something, we want the trainer to bring a sense of joy into our learning. Instead, most education is soulless, incredibly dull and it's not surprising that clients drop out. The problem is that we're pretty sure we're guilty of this callous training and teaching as well. But what if we were to make fun the core of our system? What if we postponed designing the information-based section and thought about the fun elements, instead? What if fun wasn't an afterthought but part of the entire structure of learning? How would we do things differently, if this were the case? In this series, let's look at:
In this series, let's look at: 1) How to create Infotainment 2) Why we need to understand the goal 3) How to place the fun elements in your training 1) How to create Infotainment If you were in charge of getting a kid to write, would you start with “slimy, oozy eyeballs?” Here is a story of Jen Jackson from Seattle. She'd started a small English tutoring business aimed at kids that were being homeschooled. One of her students was Michael, Michael clearly despised writing, despite being able to read well. His mother tried “everything”, but her methods weren't working, so she called Jen to help Michael write. Except for the fact, that Jen didn't make Michael write at all. The two of them read joke books, challenged each other to tongue twisters and did everything but write. The second meeting involved fun drawing games and drawing a monster. Still, no writing was included. It was only the third session where a Monster Cafe was created, apparently to accommodate Michael's monster. That's when Michael wrote out a short menu that included slimy, oozy eyeballs. In the sessions to follow, Michael went on to create many menus for different monsters. Today, Michael is not exactly prolific, but he willingly writes short paragraphs and is eager to keep improving. When we read this story, we can see how entertainment has led to information success, can't we? Yet, as an educator it somehow feels scary. Even if you embrace the power of entertainment as the doorway to learning, how are you supposed to implement it? If you did what Jen did, wouldn't Michael's parent look at you funnily, wondering if you were just wasting their time and money? What are you supposed to do when you're not dealing with kids, but adults instead—and in serious fields like marketing or finance? The core of entertainment is to take the pressure off, completely Let's say you wanted to learn Photoshop. If you've never looked at Photoshop before, that sounds a bit intimidating, doesn't it? So how do you make it fun? You look at the what causes people to freeze. Incredibly, it's the computer and Photoshop itself. When I'm showing clients how to use Photoshop for the first time, I usually take them to a cafe—without the computer. We sit down and work our way through some core shortcuts. If the client wants to learn to draw, what alternatives would they need? Wait, you're reading this, so you can easily play along. Let's say you want to get the brush tool. Which letter on your keyboard would you press? Yes, you're right, it's the letter B. What if you wanted to change the opacity of the brush to 30%? What number would you press? Some clients say 30, but of course, the answer is 3. What about 50%. Yes, it's 5. And 70%? I'm teasing. Of course, you know the answer. Let's move on to the brush size. If you wanted to increase the brush size and you had to choose between the left and right square bracket, which one would you choose? Most of us correctly select the right square bracket, which means that the left one will reduce the brush size. Imagine you're sipping a cup of coffee, there's no computer in sight, and you're told to create a theoretical drawing in Photoshop. You have to get to the brush, get the opacity to 90% and then reduce the brush size? Notice how much fun that whole exercise turned out? The first way of taking the pressure off a person or a group is merely to get them as far as you can from the activity. When you put yourself (and the student or client) in a different setting, the pressure is instantly off and a sense of play sets in. However, not everyone can waltz their way into a cafe or garden Some teaching needs to be done at the venue itself. What do you do, then? One of the best and most effective ways to get the pressure off is to get the clients to do something wrong. Let's take an example. Of the many workshops we've had over the years, one of the more intimidating ones is the uniqueness workshop. The fact that we were going to take three days to get to uniqueness didn't help. How do you take the pressure off? You get the uniqueness wrong, that's what you do. Within minutes of starting the workshop, I gave each client an advertisement for a local business. They all had the same ad, and they had to figure out the uniqueness of the company in under 10 minutes. However, before they started, I informed them, that all of them, no matter how hard they tried, would get the assignment wrong. Imagine you're in the room right at this very moment You can hear the hush, can't you? You have an assignment, but you're going to get it wrong. But that quiet lasts only for a few seconds. Everyone has a big smile on their face as they take on the assignment that they just can't get right. The pressure to get it all correct is gone, and they can have a jolly good time. They start the assignment, complete their version of it, and then they're all chattering away and having a great time. After which everyone is called upon to give their answers, and a logical explanation follows. They've been entertained as well as informed! Tah, dah, infotainment! Good teachers know the value of play. Good workshop trainers will take the pressure off as quickly as they can. Excellent writers and speakers will use the power of stories to get their audience smiling, long before the main guts of the information comes along. The more pressure you put on a student, client or audience, the more the brain goes into shut down mode. Which is why we have to release the tension. But more importantly, it's because you need to understand the real goal. But what's the purpose? Ah, that's easy. You want the client to want to go forward of their own accord. You want them to beg you to continue. They must enjoy themselves so much that what you're teaching them must feel like a bowl of warm, chocolate muffins. Understanding the goal is what makes the client—or student come back repeatedly. Let's find out how we can get this goal going, shall we? 2) Why we need to understand the goal “‘Better, faster, cheaper.’ That was NASA's mantra around the year 1999. And it was in this very year that the Mars Climate Orbiter was destroyed. On Nov 10, 1999, the Mars Climate Orbiter, a $125 million satellite was supposed to become the the first weather observer orbiting over another world. For the orbiter to do its job, it needed to get into a stable orbit around the red planet. But something had gone wrong. The software was required to control the Orbiter's thrusters, and it did so, using the system of measurement of “pounds”. However, a separate software was processing data in the metric unit—”newtons”. The two systems of measurement threw the entire mission entirely out of whack, and atmospheric friction likely tore the fragile satellite apart. From the outside, it might look like a doofus-plan: that sophisticated scientists didn't notice that the software was calculating in two completely different units. And just like that, the mission—the $125 million mission—was no more. When training clients, the burnout rate is consistently like the Mars Orbiter That's because we're using completely different systems of measurement in our teaching methods. The goal isn't necessarily to get the ideas or learning across. Yes, that's the final goal, but not the primary goal. The primary goal of any training system is to get the client back. Remember the story about Jen Jackson and how she tackled Michael's writing problem?
Remember how my mother-in-law got her students to get all excited about Sunday school? When you think about education in an objective sense, you may feel that it's your job to get the information across. But knowledge is tiring. It's frustrating. It's the wrong system of measurement. And it's most often what causes the client to burn up before the mission so much as gets underway. Instead, think of how you can get the client back using fun and a factor of entertainment. Entertainment doesn't just mean you're rolling out tacos and a Mariachi band
But then again, who says learning has to be all work, work and more work? In the headlines course, for example, we start off with an assignment that goes like this: Day 1: Introduce yourself Day 2: Watch three videos—and these videos are from the movie, Karate Kid Day 3: List five topics and many sub-topics

And what does their list look like? Ice Cream •   Cup •   Cone •   Scoops •   Buckets •   Sprinkles •   Hershey’s Chocolate Syrup •   Brown Cow •   Whipped cream By Day 5, clients are clearly having fun Mermaids, dinosaurs, deep sea aliens (yes, deep sea aliens exist, you know)—they all make a list. And everyone is having a blast. They're getting to know the members of their tiny group; they're coming up with all of these crazy topics and sub-topics. And it's a lot like what happens at our place every Friday. On Fridays, for the past four years, we've taken our niece Marsha to the food market The assignments could involve walking to the veggie section, weighing an object and writing down the weight. Or we might have to skip—no walking, just skipping—to the dairy section to find out how pricing works, and how Swedish rounding of prices works. In short, Marsha (and I) have been running, jumping and skipping through our learning exercise. She's learned about frozen, dried and fresh foods. She's learn about weights and measures, about addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Then when we get home, we do spellings in the garden or walking around the car (yes, I get sneaky steps on my Fitbit when I do that activity). However, let's make this really boring. Let's hunch over a desk or dining table and you get the idea why most kids detest having to study. There's zero entertainment and a lot of screaming and do this, do that, involved, instead. So what would Marsha want to do the following week? And the week after? Doesn't take much imagination, does it? If our goal is to educate, to train, to impart knowledge, you and I are sure going about it the wrong way. A workshop doesn't need your audience to reverentially worship you as you show them slide after slide. At Psychotactics workshops, clients go for walks and do their assignments. They sit by the pool. We have games, we have soft toys like Jordan the otter, and of course, Elmo comes along wherever we go. At one workshop, two our clients, Jessica and Alia, who happened to be belly dancers, taught one part of the group to dance, and the other to clap along and create the mood. Would you want to go to another dull, reverential note-taking-workshop or come to a Psychotactics workshop, instead? If it sounds like too much fun, and no work, that's not the case at all Every course online, every workshop, every book you write needs to be result-oriented. If the client buys your product or service to get a result, a result needs to be the finale. But why does it have to be boring? The only reasons why any learning is boring is because the trainer doesn't realise that fun is possible, or they take the easy route and do what they've already done a million times before. To create a fun-based situation takes a lot of work on your part. It's not as if to suggest that a serious training session isn't a lot of work. It's just that you need to do so much more planning when fun is involved. Entertainment is great for the learner or the audience, but it's a hard grind for you to put into place. However, the results of information + entertainment are incredibly predictable Clients come back repeatedly. If you were to attend a Psychotactics workshop, you'd find close to 50% of the audience are back for a second, third, fourth helping. Clients travel long distances just to be at the workshop. And they sign up even before we have time to put up a sales page. For instance, if you take the Singapore Landing Page workshop, ¼ of the seats are already gone. With the Brussels workshop, ¾ of the seats were taken before we completed the sales page. A similar trend plays out when we're conducting courses online. There's the Article Writing Course—yes, the live course online—in July 2018 The seats would go on sale by early March. And before you know it, and often within 24 hours, that course is filled to the brim. If you look at a presentation, there are compelling videos, loads of cartoons, a touch of animation—all designed to give the audience respite, even though the presentation may be under 40 minutes long. And if you've read a book from Psychotactics, you know that once again there are cartoons, a recipe in the middle of the book and an epilogue at the end of the book telling you the process of how the book was made. What's the goal of education? To come back, that's what the goal should be, shouldn't it? Imagine you as a kid wanting to race to school every day, because, hey, school was so much fun. Imagine desperately wanting to continue a video series on a topic like Photoshop, because the presenter is so amusing. Now make no mistake. It's not about pure entertainment. You're there for the information as well, but why on Earth does the process of imparting information have to be so boring? “Better, faster, cheaper” That was the mantra, the chant that caused the Mars Polar Lander to fry just 23 days after the Mars Climate Orbiter. According to an article in Wired Magazine, vibrations in that craft’s legs may have convinced the craft’s on-board computer it had already landed when it was still 100 feet in the air.“The specific reasons [for that failure] were different, but the underlying parts, this overly ambitious appetite, were the same.” “NASA made some “big-time” changes after that,” said NASA engineer Richard Cook, who was project manager for Mars exploration projects. They got rid of several other missions, including one that involved bringing rocks back to Earth. NASA, it seems, reevaluated what they were doing, based on strategies and concepts that had stood the test of time. When teaching, what stands the test of time better than entertainment? Would you rather go back to a place that is boring, or one that is a fun-learning experience? Which one are you most eager to go back to, time and time again? Well, since we're on the same page, let's go to the third part. Now that we're pretty sure that fun is part of learning, let's move to the third part and find out just where we can put fun parts in the learning. 3) How to place fun elements in your training Rob Walling has an unusual video in the middle of his presentation that takes the audience by surprise. In May 2017, I spoke at the Double Your Freelancing conference in Sweden. Rob was one of the speakers, and his topic was about the topic of “how to launch a startup.” Rob's a pretty easy-going speaker, with well-thought-out slides and a gentle progression. Until midway, when the entire presentation seems to stop for an intermission of sorts. Walling decides to show the audience a video of how his son solves a problem progressively. It's a home video, nothing flashy, yet the audience laughs as they watch the story unfold. How did the video show up in Rob's presentation? It's the same question that could be asked when you attend a Psychotactics and go off scampering for a scavenger hunt. Right in the middle of the workshop, there's a peculiar assignment. The pre-assigned groups are given 30 minutes to go out and find a whole bunch of items, return and then upload the pictures to the blog. The next day each group makes a presentation; the best entry is chosen by popular vote, and there's a tiny little prize ceremony. You noticed the fun element in both the examples, didn't you? The question is: how did they get there? And the answer becomes pretty apparent even as the question is being asked. Someone has to put it there, because yes, it may show up quite by chance. However, in most cases, the creator of the product or service has to be proactive enough to put in the fun elements. Your product or service needs this break as well Why should it be? When I went to school, we had a short break of 15 minutes, then a lunch break of an hour. We'd race out of the class at break time, so we could get onto the playground. Was the play connected in any way to our biology or physics class? Of course not, but the fact that someone decided to have the short and long break enabled us to study and play on every given day. Your product or service needs this break as well The way to go about creating the entertainment factor is to sit down with the book you're about to write. If you could make it fun, more interesting, what would you do? If you're about to conduct a course online, what do the assignments look like? Is there any space for play? What about your workshops or seminars? Are the participants like prisoners listening to you drone on forever? Or is there some factor of entertainment and play? If you remember picking up a copy of the Reader's Digest, you have this example with “The Lighter Side of” and “Laughter the Best Medicine” in the middle of some pretty serious articles. Someone sat down and said: “Ooh, all of this stuff is intense. We need to lighten up”. Not everyone appreciates the entertainment, of course A scavenger hunt may not go down well with 100% of the participants. Cartoons in a marketing book sound a bit crazy, doesn't it? A door that creaks open on a website (it's going to be on our new website) may seem outlandish. And there are always going to be naysayers. However, by and large, those are the people who wanted to stay in and do their homework while we ran out during school breaks. If they're unhappy with the entertainment factor, don't go around chaining the rest of your group to ol' grumps. Instead, design the event, the book, the product or service with a bunch of fun elements. Look through other books or situations to find inspiration Esquire Magazine may have a joke section—just one joke told by a supermodel. Could you be that supermodel in your book? If you've got a video course, why do you have to be Ms.Serious or Mr.Let's-Get-To-The-End? Have a couple of videos that tell a joke, or show something funny around your neighbourhood. Maybe take a leaf from Rob Walling's book and put in a video about your kid's crazy jokes. The fun part doesn't always have to be disconnected. It can connect quite easily as well. In The Brain Audit, there are sections where there's a whole page of cartoons, and they connect quite precisely. There's also a total disconnect with a butter chicken recipe. Do what you please: connect or disconnect at will. • Crossword puzzles • Recipes • Funny home videos • Cartoons • Stories • Case studies These are just some ways to entertain your audience while educating them As this article demonstrates, entertainment isn't just a nice-to-have. Instead, it's a necessity. Sometimes it is the reason why people show up. Sometimes it's the reason why they stay and continue. And sometimes the entertainment may be right at the end, like when David Attenborough and his crew put in the “how we made this documentary” as an epilogue of their film. When you see an idea you like, make sure you borrow it and use it well. We've used ideas from video and used it our books. We've been to a Sting concert and used some of the concepts in our podcasts. You can get ideas from everywhere if you look out for them—and more importantly—implement them. My mother-in-law's Sunday school story didn't end well. She managed to get the kids interested, but jealousy worked against her. She was told to stop the fun bits and focus only on the serious religious teaching, instead. You, on the other hand, aren't going to be pulled up if you add entertainment to your work. However, you have to plan in advance. The entertainment isn't likely to just work its way into your syllabus. Sit down, create the entertainment. Start small and build from there. Work is fun. But play is just as educational, if not more so. Next Up: The Secret of How To Get Clients To Keep Coming Back Repeatedly

Darkness is settling upon the world; the workweek is coming to a close. A week of activity, a week of growth, a tiring week. But as the sun goes down on Friday, a new day is being ushered in: the day for which we toiled the entire week, a day of rest and tranquility, the holy Shabbat.Greeting the Shabbat (and also Jewish holidays) are girls and women across the globe. Shortly before sunset they light candles, which usher in peace and blessing to their homes and to the world.Origin and ReasonsThe first woman to light Shabbat candles was our Matriarch Sarah. According to Jewish tradition, Sarah would light the Shabbat candles on the eve of the Shabbat, in the famous tent she shared with Abraham, and the candles would miraculously burn from one Friday to the next. Thus the pleasant sight of Sarah's candles greeted the many guests that visited Abraham and Sarah's tent throughout the week. When Sarah passed away, the flames on her Shabbat candles were extinguished. A few years later, when Isaac saw that the Shabbat candles of his prospective wife, Rebecca, had the same miraculous ability to continue burning throughout the week, he understood that she was Sarah's righteous successor, and he wed her happily. Our Sages implemented the lighting of Shabbat and holiday candles for several reasons.Peace in the Home: Shabbat and holidays are intended to be peaceful oases in our chaotic lives. We illuminate our home so that we should not stumble in the darkness, something which would have a decidedly un-peaceful effect.Honoring the Day: We add light in the home to honor the Shabbat Queen.Pleasure: To fully enjoy the Shabbat delicacies, one must be able to see the food—which requires a well-lit room. The mystics explain that Shabbat is the day that brings illumination to our world, which so often seems to be dark and negative. Furthermore, candles are a metaphor for Torah and for the human soul. The candles represent the light we introduce into the world through studying Torah and observing its precepts. And they also represent the "additional soul" with which, our Sages explain, we are endowed on Shabbat. The BasicsPrepare the candles (or oil and wicks) and matches, and a fireproof surface upon which to place the match after lighting the candles, such as a metal or ceramic plate.1 The candles should be set up in close proximity to where you will eat the Shabbat meal. The candles should be sufficiently large (or the oil bountiful enough) so that the flame will burn for the duration of the meal. Many have the custom, when applicable, that the man of the household sets up and prepares the candles for lighting.Until marriage, women and girls light one candle. Post-marriage, women light (at least) two candles. Some add an additional candle for each child: e.g., a woman with three children lights five candles. If no woman (over the age of bat mitzvah) is present in the home, a man should light the candles. On Fridays, light the candles eighteen minutes before sunset—and under no circumstances later than sunset! The times fluctuate based on date and location—(On holidays [other than Yom Kippur] that do not coincide with Shabbat, one may light the candles after sunset, using an existing flame.)

When you're giving away bonuses, it's easy to believe you don't need to give away your best product or service. The best information always needs to be sold—so you can earn a decent living. And yet, this podcast episode takes an opposite stance. You need to put your best stuff out in front—free. Yes, give away the goodies, no matter whether you're in info-products or content marketing; services or running a workshop. If you do, let us know and we’ll be sure to fix them.” What are the three benchmarks that you need to create this magic? Many years ago when I started my cartooning career, I used to get all kinds of jobs. What I really loved was the plum jobs, the jobs where you had this fabulous stuff that you could do and used to get paid really well. I would spend hours and days and weeks doing those kinds of jobs. Then you had the recurring jobs. These were tiny cartooning assignments which didn’t pay very well, so I’d just work very quickly through them because well, they weren’t paying that much anyway. One day, my neighbor, who happened to be an art director of Elle Magazine, he stopped in and said, “Sean, why are you doing such a bad job with these cartoons? Why is it that this work looks so shoddy?” Of course I said, “Well, they don’t pay much.” He said, “I don’t really know how much they pay when I look at your work in the newspaper. I only look at the work and I say, ‘This work is shoddy. This work is sloppy. As a reader, I’m not supposed to know how much you get paid. I only see the end result.'” This is true for us as well. In today’s world, where we’re giving away free stuff, we look at the stuff we’re giving away and we think, “Wait, we need to put in all our efforts into creating great products and great services. But if it’s going to be free, then we need to pull back about it. We can’t put in all the effort into free.” My art director friend would tell you, “I don’t see it that way. It cannot be shoddy. It cannot be sloppy.” That’s what we’re going to cover today. We’re going to cover how you need to make your free product as valuable or even more valuable than your paid product. What are the three benchmarks that you need to create this magic? Part 1: The Concept of Consumption The first thing that we’re going to cover today is the concept of consumption. The second thing is how it needs to have that unhurried look, that unhurried texture, that unhurried feeling. Finally, we need to feel pain, real pain. Let’s cover these three topics. Let’s start off with the first topic, and that is one of consumption. In case you didn’t already know it, Netflix has been monitoring your behavior for a very long time. Netflix is big time into consumption. The reason for that is very simple. The more they get you to come back and watch serials and movies, the more likely you are to renew your subscription month after month, year after year. For ages, the television industry has suggested that the pilot episode is the most critical of them all. If someone watches the pilot episode, they’re going to watch all the rest, or at least that’s how the philosophy went until we ran into Netflix. Netflix started pinpointing the episodes for each show season in which 70% of all users went on to complete the entire series. Here’s what they found. When they looked at Breaking Bad, the hook was not episode number one; it was episode number two. When they looked at the prison comedy, Orange is the New Black, they found that episode number three was the one that made the difference. In some cases, it was episode number eight that made the difference; in some, four; in some, three; in some, five. What they found, however, was that people wanted to get to the end, and that if they got them to binge watch, they would watch all of them one after the other. What does this tell us about our clients? What does this tell us about our reports and our newsletters? It tells us that people are a lot more willing to give us a chance than we think, if we can get them to the end. This is why consumption becomes so critical. When you look at all of those signups, you know those little boxes that say just give me your name and your email address, and let’s do this quickly. Well, that’s not how people really behave. When you do the study, people behave differently. They want to consume stuff. They want to spend more time at your site. They want to read a little more before they commit. When you’re creating a product, maybe it’s just a report, maybe it’s an article, a series of articles, maybe it’s a webinar or a podcast, people will take their time. They will give you more than one chance. It’s not like you need to have a sloppy first time, but it’s not like you have to convince them either. Because they take their time. What you have the ensure is that they get from point A to point C at the very least. You have to get them through the stages. This is what we do with the Headline Report. When you get 2 Psychotactics and you subscribe to the newsletter, you get a headline report. It shows you how to write headlines, just taking three easy steps. But there is no hurry. You go through the introduction. It gives you the philosophy. Then it takes you to step one, and you’re able to create a headline, and then step two, and you’ll be able to create another headline, and step three and the third type of headline. In under ten minutes, you can create headlines just reading the report, but it gets you to the end. When you get to the end, you already have this superpower. You have this ability to write headlines, to figure out which headlines are missing those components. It’s complete. What’s happened there is it has been designed for consumption. It has been designed to make sure that the client gets that superpower, that ability to do something. When you look at a lot of the webinars online or the podcasts, a lot of the stuff is based on information. It is more and more and more information, but not stuff that you can directly apply. This is what we have to work at, because we’re not in the entertainment business like Netflix. Their goal is to make sure that you get to the end of the episode, of the next episode, and then right to the end of the series. They’re totally in the entertainment business, and we are in the information business, but we need to make sure that we’re not just giving information but we’re giving that client a superpower. We’re giving them the ability to write headlines. We’re giving them the ability to do something specific at the end of it. We need to start off with the end in mind. That’s probably what Netflix is doing anyway. They’re going, “What is the end point of this series?” That end point is then creating all of the series back to back so that you get hooked. You need to ask yourself that question as well. When you’re creating a report, when you’re creating an article, when you are doing anything that you’re giving away free, the shoddiness comes from the fact that you were just going to give away information, more information. In reality, if you think about it from a perspective of when they finish this, what superpower will they have, that changes everything doesn’t it? That makes your client more likely to binge read, binge listen, binge watch, whatever it is that you’re going to throw. Then the free becomes more important than the product itself because they haven’t paid for anything and they’ve got this value which they just didn’t expect. Consumption comes in very quickly and consumption becomes more critical than attraction and conversion, which gets bandied about all over the internet. You need to know how to attract. You need to know how to convert. Once you’ve gone through that, the third stage, consumption, that’s the most critical of all. You can start off with your free product or your report, or just about anything, as long as you know what is the end in mind and how will it help the customer get to that end and have the superpower. That brings us to the end of this first section. Let’s go to the second section. Part 2: Why Package Your Free Content Let’s explore why your free product content needs to look very unhurried, and yet, very unpackaged. On Fridays, something very strange happens at our café. The usual baristas disappear and someone else takes their place. Now it bugs me when baristas get changed on Friday, because you’re starting to settle in, you’re starting to relax a bit, and then your whole routine has changed because of this change in barista. Anyway, this new barista, she’s making the coffee and she places it in front of us. She goes away and the café is reasonably quiet, almost too quiet for a Friday. She comes over and she’s asks for my opinion. She’s says, “How did you find the coffee?” Of course I’m the wrong person to ask for an opinion because I will give it. She’s standing there for about 20 minutes listening to what I have to say, because I’m telling her how I evaluate the coffee. The way I evaluate coffee is I look at the barista themselves and I look at how they’re dressed. Maybe this is just me, but every time I see an untidy-looking barista, I get bad coffee. The first thing I’m looking for is how tidy does the barista look. Then the second thing I’m looking for is how tidy does my cup of coffee look. Is there art on it or is it just coffee in a cup? Before I’ve even tasted the coffee, I have a pretty good idea whether the coffee is going to be good or bad. Then of course there are variables; that can be humidity, the temperature of the milk. There are so many variables in the coffee, but at the very core I’m looking for this unhurried professional cofee that comes out in the midst of a deadline. This is what your client is looking for as well. They’re looking for this report, this article, this information that is unhurried. They know that you’re busy, but they don’t care. They’re the clients. They want this product or this service to look professional long before they open it. Packaging becomes very critical, and packaging needs to look unhurried. It needs to look like someone has spent a little time despite the deadline. You see this a lot in Japan. I have mentioned this before on the podcast, that Japan is probably the best place in the world to buy pretty much anything. You can go to the smallest store and ask for food, and you’ve seen how sushi and sashimi has been packaged. It’s always very cleanly packaged. There’s this design element around it. You can go and buy some sweets. You can go and buy a little pendant. You can buy pretty much anything in Japan and you get packaging. You get this look of unhurriedness. When you have this product, whether it be a webinar or a podcast, you need to feel that packaging. What sets off that packaging? For instance, in this podcast. The story that starts up right at the beginning, that tells you that some amount of research has gone into the whole Netflix story. The fact that there are three points that we’re going to cover, that tells you that’s a very clear outline. This is like the barista. You’ve not really listened to the episode yet, but you get this feeling. You get this feeling that there is a logic and there is work put into this, and it’s unhurried. That is what is critical, because it sets you up for the rest of the binge listening or the binge reading or the binge experiencing. You can tell the difference between a great presenter and a crappy presenter. You can tell the difference between a good writer and a bad writer. There’s always this factor of unhurriedness. We need to get the client to feel this packaging long before they get to the meat of the content. Netflix, their research has shown exactly that: that clients are willing to go the distance before they decide this is really good or this is really crappy. We will walk into cafes and look at the barista, and either stay or walk out. It’s based on this factor of unhurriedness. How do they present themselves? How do they present their coffee? It’s the same thing for your product. You cover your introduction, your structure. That needs to be very clear before I get into the meat of the matter. That’s what you really need to work on. That’s what makes the difference between a free product and a paid product. It needs to look like a paid product. It needs to look like something you paid a lot of money for, and yet you got it free. Now you don’t have to spend months and years working on this free product, but make it tidy. This takes us to the third part, which is the pain that you must feel when you’re giving away your free product. Part 3: Why You Must Feel Pain As you know, I like to cook Indian food. Two dishes that make me very happy are butter chicken and a dal. A dal is a lentil, by the way. If you were to ask me to give away the butter chicken or the dal, I would hesitate. Now I like them both as much, but I like one better than the other. Well, not really, but here’s the thing. I still would hesitate to give away the chicken, the butter chicken. That’s the kind of dilemma that you’re dealing with. You’re dealing with a situation where you’ve got this really good stuff and you’re not really that keen on giving it away. You think maybe it would be a good idea to give away something that is not quite so salable. Because when you look at what you’ve done, you’ve spent a lot of time and effort, and somehow it seems like a shame to just give it away. You’ve got to feel that pain. You really have to feel that pain, because when you feel that pain, that’s when you know that the client is going to feel wow, this is amazing. It’s almost too easy to give away something that is not quite up to that standard. You know the standard. It doesn’t matter where you are in life, you know your standard and you know what’s possible, and you know your best. When you’re giving away your best, you feel that pain. I remember the time I went and met a friend of mine. He is a world-class watercolorist. He had just finished a workshop in Auckland. Of course we met, we had a beer, etc. After that, he gave me one of his sketches. He just pulled it out from his bag and he gave it to me. What did I do with the sketch? I look at it, I said thank you, I took it home. Do you think it was his best sketch, his best watercolor? Of course not. It was just something that he was doing, just a rough sketch. It stayed around the office for a while, and then it went under the bed. Then I don’t even know where it is anymore. Now, even if he were listening to this podcast, he would not know that I’m referring to him, because I know quite a few watercolorists. If you’re a watercolorist and you gave me a painting, there’s a pretty good chance that I don’t know where it is right now because it wasn’t your best. This is the whole point. When you give away stuff, give away the best stuff, or at least part of the best stuff. Now we sell a course called the Pre-Sell Course. This teaches you how we sell our courses, how we sell our workshops, how we sell our products. We sell our products faster than pretty much anyone on the internet. Courses that cost $3,000, in 20 minutes the course is full. No strategic alliances, no ads, no joint ventures, no nothing. How do we do it in 20 minutes? The Pre-Sell Course shows you that. It’s not cheap; it’s almost $400. But we wanted the audience, our members, our subscribers, to understand how powerful this course was. What we did was we sliced it up into about a fifth of the course and gave it away. You know someone wrote back to me and said, “You know, I didn’t buy the rest of the course, but just using that one-fifth, I was able to launch a product very successfully.” Are you thinking what I’m thinking right now? We’re giving away stuff that is so powerful that the client might not even need to come back for some more, but they will come back. That’s what we’ve found consistently. We’ve found that when we give away stuff which is useful, that is consumable, that is powerful, the client comes back. Because that’s what happens in real life when you give away a sample. Something that’s amazingly tasty, it’s not like the diner goes away and just doesn’t come back. We’ve found time and time again, and this isn’t the Pre-Sell Course by the way … There’s a whole section on sampling. It talks about how sampling increases sales by 200, 300, 400%. It’s incredible. I didn’t think that sampling could do that, but it does it. There are statistics to prove it. But if the sample itself is not so powerful, not so outstanding, why is the client going to buy a product or service from you in the future? Summary This brings us to the end of this podcast. We covered three things. The first thing was the factor of consumption. You need to get the client from one point the other. Interestingly, as we saw in Netflix, it doesn’t matter. You don’t have to speed up the process. You don’t have to get people to sign up right away. They read, you know? They read a little bit. They read the introduction. They look at how it’s constructed. That takes us to the second one, which is your packaging needs to be great and unhurried. It’s like every time we go to the café, we look at the barista and we say, “How are they? Are they neat? How’s the coffee presented? Is it perfect?” That’s how you know you’ve got a great coffee. That’s how you know you’ve got a great product. Finally, you have to feel that pain when you’re giving away your product. If you don’t feel that pain, it’s like giving away the dal instead of the butter chicken. It’s not that the dal is bad; it’s just that the butter chicken, well, you would rather be eating it yourself, right? What is the one thing that you can do today? The one thing that you can do today is to look at whatever you’re giving away and see is it built for consumption. Can they go from A to B to C and then have that superpower? If no, then you’re just giving information. We don’t need more information. We’re done with information. Just give me some skill that I can sort out in the next ten minutes, or 15 minutes, or 20 minutes, whatever, but quickly. We’re done with this podcast episode. Giving away outstanding content is the magic behind what attracts—and keeps clients. -------------------- Resources To access this audio + transcript: http://www.psychotactics.com/62 Email me at: sean@psychotactics.com Twitter/Facebook: seandsouza Magic? You can find out more about this on psychotactics.com/story-telling-workshop. Be sure to read The Brain Audit before you arrive, because The Brain Audit is compulsory for any course that you do with Psychotactics. Yes, it’s a barrier, and we’re happy to keep that barrier in place. You will find The Brain Audit a tremendous read. It is really fun to read and to understand how people think. That’s me, Sean D’Souza, saying bye for now. Bye bye. Still Reading? Now that you understand why free products need to be better than paid products or services, do you know how to price your products? Here is a detailed visual “yes-yes” pricing grid, to help you—Dartboard Pricing: Yes and Yes Grid. You’ll see how to construct the pricing grid (it’s easy), and then you can adapt the concept on your own slides, pricing sheets, or website. And yes, increase your prices! On Fridays, I answer your questions! I decided I didn't want to handle any of the in-depth, math-related questions today so I chose these three questions to handle. 1:41 - What can I do to prepare for being the executor of someone's estate? 16:49 - How can I reconcile the idea of being a specialist in my field with the advantages of being a generalist? 48:09 - What can I do to ensure a smoothe transition to a single-income household?
