In the current American political climate and cultures, things seem to be more unstable than ever. How is a Christian supposed to respond? What Should inform the Christian's opinions and beliefs? Aren't politics just a worldly system that should have no part in the Christian life?In this episode, we discuss the events the past week, and how Christians should carry themselves in these incredibly polarizing times.
There are so many choices in front of us every day. Each has the power to determine when and whether you will achieve your goals. Once you know the outcome you desire, these questions will help: 1) What CAN you do today that will lead directly and quickly to achieving your goal. 2) What SHOULD you do today that will lead directly and quickly to achieving your goal? 3) What MUST you do today that will lead directly and quickly to achieving your goal? It’s simple. Make your next action that one that gets the result you want as fast as possible. Everything else can wait. I dare you to try it.

Evangelist Ted Huston brings a message entitled "What Should the Righteous Do?" He admonishes us to continue to do right, no matter what happens.
This week, I've got no guest, it's a solo cast. I'm going to be talking to you about building a blog that provides real value. The Importance of having a blog? I want to dive into the importance of writing a blog. I mean, what is a blog at the end of the day? What I want to share is that a blog is literally fuel for the search engine fire. It's giving you more content to share on social media, it's providing and proving your expertise. Studies have indicated that businesses that are actively blogging acquire more customers because they have a stronger brand presence online. It ultimately allows you to level the playing field and helps you to get to know your target audience and it helps your target audience to get to know you. The Keystone Click Blog: I look at our Google Analytics, I often will break it up into the different segments of the site and figure out what kind of elements of our site are driving the most traffic. Historically, there is a blog post that continues to show up as one of the top-visited pages on our website. Now, what's fascinating is that this post was written in 2014. So this blog post was written by one of my team members. It likely took her maybe about three hours, that's on average, what we budget per blog post, to do a little research and writes and then published it, and now today, it still drives traffic to our site. What Should you Write About? First and foremost, start with the top questions that are asked of you, from your customer base when you're in that discovery phase when you're getting to know someone from a networking standpoint, even established clients that you have. Anytime someone is asking you a question, just write it down. Do that exercise for a week and it will give you a ton of ideas for what to write about. The reason you want to do this is that oftentimes, questions are what is being entered into search engines, people often are searching a question to find an answer or solution. So if you're writing questions, or answering questions as a form of your blog content, is going to help elevate your opportunity to be found in the search engines. Conducting Interviews: It's no different than a podcast but you could do a written interview, like if you were interviewing someone for a written publication of sorts. The beauty of doing this is one it gives you a lot of content that you don't need to really polish up because you can simply transcribe the conversation. Also if you have a guest that you are interviewing or you're highlighting someone else's expertise, they're likely going to share that content with their audience, which extends the reach of your blog, on your site. The 80-20 Rule: 80% of the content that you create should be considered evergreen content. What that means is, it is a value to your audience today and tomorrow, and it was valuable yesterday. So it has a longer shelf life. Referencing that blog post that I talked about when I opened up, it was written in 2014, it is still relevant content today, therefore it is still providing value, it is still bringing visitors to our website. So identifying information, that is your expertise that will work for a long time, as opposed to saying, "Hey, we've got a special going on that ends on Friday," that is considered time-sensitive content. Leveraging your Team and Partners: If it's more than just you or even if you have resources, partners that you work with, they all have different areas of expertise. Ask them what types of questions they're being asked, and understand their expertise a little bit. Maybe you take the approach of answering the questions that are being asked, but taking the interview approach and interviewing your team and partners to get the solid answers Identify what your Core Offering is: Identify what your core offering is, and then make a list of the eight types of questions that people could potentially ask related to that offering. So, for example, we offer website design services, website design, and development. So that would be my core offering that I'd put here and then I'm going to look at the who question. Who am I going to be working with? Who's my main point of contact? Who's actually designing the site? Who on my team needs to be involved in this project? Then you look at the what questions. What kind of features am I going to have on my website? What kind of training Am I going to get with my website? What kind of materials do you need from me? Then look at the why questions. Why should we use WordPress content management system? Why should we have our site on Squarespace? Why should I renew my domain name for 10 years? Next up are the when questions. When is my site can be done? When do you need me to learn to sign off on things? Then come the where questions. We'll look at how questions. How do I make edits to my sites? How do I know that the site is safe and secure? Next up are the which questions. Which image is going to be better? Which color palettes? Which fines should I be using? Which content management system should I have? Which hosting provider? Then the last question is a yes or no question. So you identify that core offering product service, whatever it is, you look at the eight questions types of questions, then you just kind of brainstorm and map out what types of questions that people ask related to this offering. Every one of those 8 questions could be made into a blog post. 5 Best Practices: Easy to Read: When you're looking at a blog or an article, it needs to include visual components that are going to help relay your message and break up the heaviness of the text. Bulleted or numbered lists, images, larger fonts to break up segments, and embedded videos are all great ways to improve the readability of a blog. Evaluate the Strength of your Title: What you want is to make sure that it's easy for the reader to know what it is that they are clicking on. You don't want to write the blog title to be “Read our Blog,” or anything along those lines. At the end of the day, people decide to click on something because it's connecting with them on an intellectual or emotional level. A great tool to determine the strength of your blog title is the Google Headline Analyzer which will analyze the emotional marketing value of the words that are used in your title, which will give a score to that strength related to the intellectual or emotional strength. Target More Words: A best practice that we really strive for is a minimum of 800 words. You want to use words that are going to connect with your audience which means not using heavy industry jargon. Most importantly, you need to know what your audience is searching for and that's where understanding your keywords is going to be beneficial. Optimize your Posts: Your keywords should live in your title, in the body content, in the URL, in the alt tags or meta description tags, and in any links that you have embedded in your site. Be Consistent: You have to have a plan and consistently publish content in order to maximize that exposure and maintain the trust with your audience. Have any questions about blogging? Ep 147 How to Handle Listeners who Receive Messages that You weren’t Trying to Send Video Description This is a nice follow up to our recent episode 146, entitled “How Transparent Should Your Lyrics Be?” This seems to be a topic that has plagued artists since the dawn of art being shared with the world. What do you do—how do you respond—when the people who support your music receive messages that you were not intending to send? There are three good outcomes and three negative outcomes that we talk about today. (Check out the episode, if you want to hear what they are!) What do you think? What SHOULD an artist do when listeners hear messages you don’t necessarily intend to send? We’d love to hear about it. Leave it in the comments below. As we gear up for the first presidential debate of 2020, we take look back at the first televised presidential debate which took place between Kennedy and Nixon on September 26, 1960. When candidates face-off live it provides an opportunity for the public to see them in a different, less scripted or choreographed way, which can seriously overshadow and impact their campaigns as a whole. So, Boyd asks, why do we debate like we do? And how can we be sure we are asking the right questions? KSL Newsradio’s own Lee Lonsberry and Jason Perry of the Hinckley Institute of Politics, joins Boyd to discuss the topics selected for the first Trump-Biden presidential debate next week, and to ask, “What SHOULD we ask in a presidential debate?” ‘Inside Sources with Boyd Matheson,’ Opinion Editor at Deseret News, takes you inside the latest political news and current events, providing higher ground for today's discussions. One part of being mature is having the ability to look into the future, identify what needs to be done, then staring in the present to see that it is. But it's hard. It's easy to ignore the hard, unpleasant things now and just do what is fun and easy. But mature thinkers know better. They think about things to come and set out to usher them in with preparation, no matter how unpleasant or undesirable the situation. What SHOULD you be doing?

In a previous episode we did with Ryan Blaser, we took a look at how our technology is affecting our minds and bodies, specifically through EMF’s. We got Ryan to come back to take a deeper look and see how we can really avoid EMF’s. If you haven’t listened to the previous episode with Ryan, that is fine. We do a brief overview of EMF’s in the episode. We cover EMF regulations that exist, what products can help and what is bogus, we go into simple habits that can increase your health a ton, and we also go into how older vs newer homes can affect us. What Should we in General Watch Out For 3:17EMF Regulations 13:45Difficulty Accepting 19:27Products to Prevent EMF’sOld Homes vs New Homes 40:58“If you're looking at a home and it’s right next to a cell tower, or it has high tension power lines running through the back yard, that’s probably not a good investment. 1. Wild Card Weekend Takeaways Me: The Kirk Cousins hate must stop NOW Hal: Redemption for Deshaun Watson and Kirk Cousins and emergence of the new guard (Titans) 2. Truth/Exaggeration -The NFL should modify its OT rules allowing each team to possess the ball in OT REGARDLESS of what happens on the first possession -The NFL must adjust the Rooney Rule by putting in a requirement that teams MUST interview at least one minority HC candidate from OUTSIDE your organization that has never previously been an NFL head coach -The winner of Saturday’s Vikings/49ers game will be the eventual NFC Champion -The Redskins must NOT trade the second overall pick unless they get an RG3-style king’s ransom (meaning firsts in 2020, 2021 AND 2022) in return -People should bet on the Vikings, Titans AND Texans to cover the spread this weekend 3. Coaching Carousel -Cowboys: Michael Lombardi said that while Mike McCarthy is the perfect fit for the Cowboys given the fact that McCarthy isn’t a guy that’s going to upstage Jerry Jones, he is “skeptical” whether or not McCarthy will bring the team successful long-term. Do you share that view? -Panthers: Do you think Matt Rhule will end up being the best hire of this cycle? -Giants: Thoughts on the Joe Judge hire? -Browns: (Assuming McDaniels decides not to go there If the Vikings lose), should they immediately pounce on Stefanski? If Niners lose, should they pounce on Saleh? 4. QB Carousel -If Josh McDaniels stays in New England, how much does that increase the likelihood Brady stays? If Brady is not a Patriot in 2020, where does he play? -What SHOULD the Saints do: Re-sign Brees? Re-sign Bridgewater? Re-sign Taysom Hill? 5. Divisional Round Weekend -Vikings at 49ers (Analysis, Game Picks) -Titans at Ravens (Analysis, Game Picks) -Texans at Chiefs (Analysis, Game Picks) -Seahawks at Packers (Analysis, Game Picks) 6. BOLD PREDICTIONS ME: Dalvin Cook gets 200 scrimmage yards and 2 TD runs of 20+ yards HAL: NEITHER Desahun Watson and Patrick Mahomes throw 200 passing yards or a TD 7. Challenge Flags ME: Divisional round…be just as exciting as Wild Card HAL: Mike Zimmer and Mike Vrabel….DON’T TAKE YOUR FOOT OFF THE GAS

Most people understand the basics about the stock market and the economy - but few people have a deep enough knowledge of the two to serve them well in making financial decisions. With that in mind, I thought it would be helpful to outline how the economic cycle works and how stocks, the underlying economy, and the leading indicators can help us forecast what’s coming next so that you can make solid financial decisions. Outline of This Episode [0:30] Why it’s important to know how the economic cycle works [1:10] The historic stock market drop in December 2015 - as an illustration [3:07] Why you need to understand the basics of the economic cycle [6:44] How does the movement of the stock market affect the underlying economy? [8:55] What SHOULD we look at to understand economic health? What is an economic cycle? Simply put, the economic cycle is the booms and the busts of the overall economy. During a boom time, the overall economy is healthy, jobs are available, corporations are profitable, etc. A bust is just the opposite - jobs are scarce, corporations are having a hard time making money, and the overall spending of the population is down as a result. Economic cycles are important to watch and understand because we can learn to see patterns and correlations from one cycle that can possibly inform us about the next. In this episode I describe the way the economic cycle works and what we start to see as a recession or downturn happens. Be sure to listen. MYTH: The stock market is a leading indicator of the overall economy In December 2018, The S&P 500 (stock market) fell by 15%. The concern was that we were entering a recession and many believed they might be losing their job, or that they should sell their stock holdings. Many people hold the misconception that the stock market is a leading indicator of the underlying economy or that it represents the overall economy. But it’s not true. The stock market is more of a forward-looking indicator that is actively trying to price in the overall economy itself. Even though it’s forward-looking, it’s not a reliable leading indicator. It’s constantly trying to guess whether the economy is going to get stronger or weaker - it’s an aggregate of many variables. The overall economy will typically drive stock prices, but the stock market does not necessarily have that much of an impact on the economy overall. A great example of this was what happened in 1987’s “Black Monday” when the stock market fell 23% in a single day but the underlying economy didn’t even bat an eye. 4 things that drive the health of the underlying economy Naturally, there are many things that impact the direction the economy goes, but on a very basic level there are 4 things that drive the underlying economy. These can legitimately be called leading economic indicators. What are they? Employment - people lose their jobs Income - resulting from loss of jobs Sales - people are buying less because they are earning less Output - companies reduce output to be comparable to the decreased demand During an upturn in the economy, these indicators feed into each other, driving prices higher. The sales cycle is extremely difficult to predict, no matter how much economists and those forecasting the stock market try to do so. What should we be looking at as recession indicators? There are many things that point to the possibility of a recession. Traditionally, there are eight things that we can watch to discern if a recession is on the horizon. They are... Sensitive commodity prices Average manufacturing work weeks Commercial and industrial building contracts Inverted yield curve New incorporations New orders Housing starts Money supply I think the one we need to understand is the INVERTED YIELD CURVE : it’s a highly reliable tool to track, if there is an unexpected slow-down in economic activity. It’s not perfect, but it’ spretty reliable. Here’s how it works… A yield curve shows interest rate points across several maturity dates. Most of the time it’s just a chart of the US Treasury Bond yield curve - from 3 months all the way up to 30 years. It’s important because the Treasury Bond is quite possibly the largest and most widely held security in the world. A normal yield curve (which shows a normal risk appetite among investors) is an upward sloping chart… the rates of a 3 month treasury bond will be lower than a bond of greater maturity length. However, that curve can flatten or invert - inversion means shorter term rates are higher and longer term rates are lower. The problem with this indicator is that there is a long lead time - it usually inverts years before an economic slowdown. Used in tandem with other economic indicators it can be very helpful. Listen to learn more about why the stock market is not a leading economic indicator and how you can become a better observer of the economy. Visualization meditation benefits are an incredibly powerful tool that you can use during self-hypnosis, meditation or even creative pursuits.Either way, when performed correctly you can use it to 'simulate' an environment or stimulus almost as though you were there and to thereby fooling your brain into thinking that whatever you're imagining is real. This can then be used to experiment, to remember things or to calm yourself down. It's that latter use that we're going to be dealing with here, which can specifically be achieved by visualizing a 'happy place'. This is a place that you can 'go to' in your mind's eye that will make you feel calm and at ease. This can be used on its own for therapeutic ends, or it can be used to get yourself into a calm and suggestible state for self-hypnosis.How To Meditate – FREE Guided Meditation For Beginners HERE...What Should a Happy Place be to get the most visualization meditation benefits? When you inevitably get to the point on a hypnosis script where you're told to 'go to your happy place', it can be jarring and even stressful if you don't know where that is. To start with then: how do you choose where your happy place is?The first thing to do is to think of what automatically comes to mind when you think 'happy place'. For some people, it might be a forest, for others a tropical beach, for others a quiet log cabin. Whatever comes to mind immediately, that can be a good thing to start with – don't try and force it.If nothing is coming to the fore, then you can also try asking yourself questions. For instance: when was the last time you felt truly happy or truly calm? Or is there a place you go often in real life in order to calm down?Bringing Your Happy Place to LifeOnce you've got an idea of at least what your happy place is like, you can then go about bringing it to life and enjoy the visualization meditation benefits and making it as real as possible. One way to do this is by drawing on real experiences you've had to color the image in your mind – you can even base the happy place on a real place you've frequented.Another strategy is to try drawing your happy place. This is a good way to decide on the physical dimensions and layout which can help to keep the space more 'real' in your mind. Don't forget to concentrate on your other senses though for added visualization meditation benefits – populating your happy place with sounds and smells will make all the difference.Find out more information on this subject HERE...Learn How To Meditate - Meditation Podcast | Free Online Meditation Course | Guided Meditation | Meditation Music Download Mp3 | Daily InspirationSupport the show (https://www.buzzsprout.com/?referrer_id=206617)

Christmas is seen as a time of joy and wonder, sacredness and significance. But it’s easy to get tripped in the potholes of busyness, consumerism, and worst of all, fights about the “reason(s?!) for the season.” In a world as polarized as ours, one of those traps is the “Merry Christmas” versus “Happy Holidays” debate. What SHOULD we say? What CAN we say? What CAN’T we say? And most of all, how do we avoid the blow up at Christmas dinner that is anything but “merry” or “happy”? But what if we could go beyond the controversy? What if we could debunk the debate? What if we could actually discover the “holy” in the “holiday?”

Financial Symmetry: Cluing You In To Financial Opportunities Missed By Most People
If you've paid any attention to financial news recently, then you didn't have to look far, as stock market noise was at a peak. Media headlines were filled with phrases like: epic turmoil, getting crushed and no place to hide. Emotionally charged words that make you feel like you need to do something to prevent losing more of your nest egg. But following our instincts when investing, can lead to dangerous outcomes. In times like this, we need a strategy to give us proper perspective. On this episode of the Financial Symmetry podcast, we’ll discuss why market fluctuations are incredibly normal and provide techniques to help you cope with short-term volatility and keep your focus on long-term goals instead. If you’re getting nervous about the direction the market is taking, you’ll want to listen for steps to confront the inevitable next occurrence. How to Deal with the Emotional Roller Coaster of Investing When listening to financial news it's important to remember that the media’s ultimate job is to sell advertisements. It's not their job to help you see the long-term picture or help you reach your financial goals. Easier said than done when markets around the world experience a 10-15% drops. But if we back up, history provides a different perspective. Market volatility is reliably normal, but it can still make you feel nervous. To truly understand the ups and downs, take a look at the chart below from the Capital Group. There have been 12 full-blown bear markets since 1945. A 5% or more decline in the market typically occurs 3 times a year. And a 20% drop usually occurs about every 4 years. The past 10 years have actually been the anomaly. It is important to remember that a bear market isn’t a bad thing. It’s actually a great time to reassess your investment plan and evaluate your risk tolerance. Fight Stock Market Noise with Facts With breaking news coming at us as quick as we want it with social media, it's even harder to block out the noise. Whether tweets or 24 hour cable news, today's financial news is near immediate compared to 30 years ago when you may not hear it until the next day. In Jason Zweig's book, Your Money and Your Brain, he provides some powerful questions to prevent your feelings from overwhelming the facts. Instead of listening and reacting to the financial news du jour, stop to pause and think about if anything else has changed in your financial picture, other than price of your investment. Consider if your reasons for investing in that investment is still valid? If I liked this investment enough to buy it at a much higher price, shouldn't I like it even more now that the price is lower? What other evidence do I need to evaluate in order to tell whether this is really bad news? Has this investment ever gone down this much before? If so, would I have done better if I had sold out-or if I had bought more? What Should you Do Next? To successfully navigate a bear market, you have a long-term strategy in place. Cliche? Sure, but considering where you are in life now is instructive in developing your treatment plan for market short-term sickness. If you're in your 20’s and 30’s don’t worry, there is still plenty of time. Investment choices still matter at these ages, but not nearly as much as your actual savings amounts. Choose and stick with an investment plan so you can steadily take advantage of the drop in stock prices, a fantastic long-term sale. If in your 50's and 60's, it's much more important to focus on your overall investment strategy. How does your asset allocation match your retirement timeline? For many in this walk of life, investment returns will be larger than your annual savings amounts. You'll also be facing the sequence of return risk which can eat a big portion of your retirement without a strategy. Professional help at this point, can help you respond accordingly to market events and more importantly, act as an accountability partner. Having a buffer between your emotions and the markets may be the most important financial decision you can make. Outline of This Episode [1:17] Examples of fearful headlines in the news this month [4:01] Why you should not be worried about market fluctuations [7:32] Stick to your strategy and investment plan [12:26] What are your emotions telling you to do? ParentingAces - The Junior Tennis and College Tennis Podcast
Withdrawal from the backdraw of our biggest national tournaments has reached a ridiculous level. At last week's Kalamazoo Tournament (Boys 16s & 18s National Hardcourts), backdraw walkovers were at 16.89% up from 5.88% only fifteen years ago. Why are so many players pulling out once they lose in the main draw? What can coaches and parents do about it? What SHOULD coaches and parents do about it? That's the topic of this week's conversation with coach Marc Lucero. He feels very passionately about this issue and shares his thoughts on the reasons behind all the withdrawals and what can be done to curb the trend. After recording, I received a request via email from a parent: "Please discuss the summer schedule which contributes to fatigue and injuries. There are too many high level events too close together in my opinion." Marc's response: "I think it’s a valid concern. However I think it’s less to do with the schedule than the feeling that you need to play everything on the schedule, if that makes sense. I think there is an education component to this that the USTA can do better but also some culpability falls on the coaches of the kids to take a more proactive role with helping guide parents in the scheduling. Parents also would have to give up some control in this scenario and this is also assuming that coaches have experience in this area. For those that don’t have experience or for parents who do this on their own, a good way to think about optimum scheduling is to pick the one or two biggest events in the summer and put those on the calendar. Then work backwards from there. The health of the player always comes first in my mind. I want the player to be as fresh and healthy as possible (ready to go play) heading into the biggest events." You can find Marc at First Break Academy in Carson, CA. You can reach him on Twitter here and Instagram here. He is incredibly responsive, so please feel free to contact him with any questions! A big thank you to STØNE for our music! You can find more of his music at SoundCloud.com/stonemuzic If you’re so inclined, please share this - and all our episodes! - with your tennis community. There is an identity crisis going on in our world; from people that are stealing people’s identities, to people that struggle with self-identity. And that battle doesn't end when you enter the Church, so many people that go to church don't know what they believe, why they believe, or even who to believe. For this reason we have started a new series titled, "We Are" in which we will break down basic foundational truths that make us who we are as believers. This morning we looked at, "We Are Christians" from Acts 11:19-26. Using this text we answered two questions; I. What Makes a Christian. (Vs. 19-21) and II. What Should a Christian Be. (Vs. 22-26).
Wine notes run the gamut -- from detailed and esoteric (meat blood? Madagascar vanilla?) to cute-sy and dumb (like sunshine and deliciousness!). But are they useful to us as wine drinkers? What's the goal of a note? What SHOULD it say for it to be meaningful? Ian and I discuss the state of notes and what we think could make them better. You'll let us know if we're on to something... Here's an outline of what we discuss: 1. The purpose of a tasting note 2. Communication in wine and whether it's ok to have a lexicon (we debate -- I'm pro, he's con) 3. How wine pros are told to communicate and how that muddles things. We touch on our "outsider" perceptions of certifications (since we both came from other industries). Here are links to the grids we reference: Court of Master Sommeliers WSET 4. How critics communicate and how THAT muddles things 5. How marketers communicate and how THAT muddles things 6. Christian support. One of the hallmark characteristics of being a Christian is compassion. Jesus was the epitome of acting in a way that helped and cared for others, and we are called to walk in his footsteps. Simple enough – or is it? In our world there are a myriad of causes we can be kindhearted towards – the poor, the under-educated, the abused, the oppressed, the homeless, the disabled, the unborn. Then there is the wider scope of life – endangered species, abused and homeless animals and the environment. What about the social and political issues that rage across our media 24 hours a day, seven days a week? All of these and more can easily demand our attention, money and time! What do we do? What causes are support-worthy for a Christian? Where do we invest our time, effort and resources to be truly God-honoring followers of Jesus? The first thing to realize is that God mentioned the poor way back in the Old Testament as He was setting up the Law for the nation of Israel. In His Law He made provisions for the average person to be aware, compassionate and responsible towards those who were having challenges. He also proclaimed that the poor would always be with them. He did not build a poverty elimination system into the Law, but He did build a poverty management system into it. God knew the free will of man would always leave room for bad choices. He also knew bad things would happen to good people. His instruction was to be generous and kind to the less fortunate, and His provisions gave those less fortunate opportunities to help themselves. Jesus followed this philosophy as well. While he did encourage generosity towards the poor, he did not seek to eliminate poverty. What does all of this means to us? Biblical principles for Christians point to helping with - but not solving - poverty issues. This may sound harsh, but it is based on the reality of a sin-based world. For many of us this presents a true dilemma, because we are often taught it is our business to do everything we can to save the world from all evil. We want to help, fix and solve the problems of our fellow man. These are noble and appropriate desires. How do we do that? Check out our April 16, 2018 podcast, “Who or What Should a Christian Support?” and put the whole matter of giving, saving and preserving in perspective. We DO have responsibility towards this world. Environmental conditions SHOULD be respected. We DO have responsibility of respect towards the animal kingdom as well, and we DO have responsibility towards the less fortunate. The key to this whole thing is how we choose to express that responsibility. The New Testament gives us clear cut guidance on what parts of that expression are most important for Christians. It teaches us how Christian support should be given and how to keep all of the mess of the world in perspective!
Everyone keeps score. Our brains are hard-wired to categorize even when it comes to grading our children or marriages. So when someone asks, “how are you doing” what do you use for your scorecard? In this episode Billy and Joy discuss the perils of focusing on micro gauges and limiting our evaluations to tangible measures. If you are walking through challenging days, you will definitely appreciate this discussion. Talk about this: How do you we currently "score" our family or marriage? How confident are we in the criteria we are using? What SHOULD we be using to score our relationships? Related link: We love Seth Godin – his blog is here…do yourself a solid and check him out!

This week, we're talking about civics education. At a time when our republic feels particularly unsettled, we’re asking: What do students know about their government? What SHOULD they know? Teachers tell us that there is a critical need for materials that help students understand their role in a democracy and as citizens of the world—whether the lesson is understanding the three branches of government, spotting fake news, or simply learning how to disagree respectfully, teachers of all grade levels are having civics-related discussions almost daily. In this episode, we sit down with four of our Scholastic Classroom Magazines editors to talk about how they help teachers bring civics into the classroom. We also talk with a fourth-grade teacher from New York about the types of lessons she's sharing with her students. What's your money story? Today we hear fantastic stories from the phenomenal people who attend FinCon...and man, did they not disappoint. The only rule was that we couldn't know who they were ahead of time. So today we met Felicity, who tells us some great lessons about pets, real estate, and more....then we talk to Geeta, who's a high schooler on a WAY different path than most people toward financial independence. Think there's only the college path toward retirement? Geeta will give you a MUCH different approach than most kids. Then we talk to Yinan Du from Beam. Everyone's asking, "How does Beam offer such high interest rates when banks are offering\low rates?" He answers this question AND how Beam operates on today's show. Then we return to the FinCon from to talk to Chris from KeepThrifty. His family moved from a spacious big home to a tiny house. Why? How? He'll explain on today's show (he quit his job recently also...how's he going to afford that?). Finally we talk to financial analyst Dedra Shores, who works with individuals and small business owners to help them decipher their money situation. What SHOULD keep people up at night? Dedra fills us in. It was SO fun meeting these random people at FinCon '17....they have great stories and I can't wait for you to hear them. The operationalization of your compliance programs means how deeply is compliance integrated into the function of your company. Today, I want to consider another way to operationalize compliance through the Compliance Oversight Committee. The Compliance Oversight Committee sits between the CCO and the Board’s compliance committee. The role of this Compliance Oversight Committee is to provide oversight and review of high risk issues such as third party approvals and renewals, requests for payments from third parties and significant gift, travel and entertainment requests from employees. This committee’s oversight demonstrates not only a shared committee to compliance as required under the Justice Department’s Evaluation of Corporate Compliance Programs but also fulfills the requirement for engaged senior management oversight as a part of a company’s management of risk. As far back as January 2005, in the Deferred Prosecution Agreement (DPA) entered into between the Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Monsanto Company, it provided for “the establishment and maintenance of a committee to supervise the review of (I) the retention of any agent, consultant, or other representative for purposes of business development or lobbying in a foreign jurisdiction”, or a Compliance Oversight Committee. The scope of this Compliance Oversight Committee was not fleshed out in the DPA. While many have focused on the Compliance Oversight Committee to monitor agents and other third party business representatives, the role of the Compliance Oversight Committee should be broader than simply the issues of third party agents and representatives. A major purpose of a Compliance Oversight Committee is to act as redundant backup to the books and records internal controls systems, designed to prevent and detect violations of a company’s compliance program. It should be clear the role of the Compliance Oversight Committee is not to substitute its judgment for that of the CCO but rather to provide another level of review to make sure nothing slips through the cracks which might expose the company to unwanted risk. This can begin with a clear, written charter that sets out the functionality, goals, and parameters of the group. Moreover, the Compliance Oversight Committee should be reviewed on a periodic basis to determine usefulness and effectiveness. To this end, the Society for Corporate Compliance and Ethics (SCCE) Complete Compliance and Ethics Manual (2016 ed.) suggests the following language in its proposed form of Compliance Committee Charter: The compliance officer shall have ultimate responsibility for operating the compliance program, with the support and assistance of the compliance committee. The committee shall consist of ### members, representative of each major department or area. The committee may appoint ad hoc members, each to serve at the pleasure of the committee, to assist and advise the committee in carrying out this charter. While the ad hoc members of the committee are not entitled to vote on matters formally considered by the committee, the ad hoc members shall be entitled to call a meeting of the committee and, further, to have any matter included on the agenda of any meeting of the committee. The committee shall designate the proper manner for calling meetings and the setting of agendas thereto. Who should be on an Oversight Committee? The Monsanto DPA provides guidance on this point by stating, “The majority of the committee shall be comprised of persons who are not subordinate to the most senior officer of the department or unit responsible for the relevant transaction.” This indicates that senior management should be involved in the Compliance Oversight Committee. It also indicates that more than one department should be represented on the Compliance Oversight Committee. This would include senior representatives from the Accounting (or Finance) Department, Compliance & Legal Departments, IT, Finance and Business Unit Operations. The bottom line is that the CCO should chair a committee of peers/senior level officers who are in a position to make decisions and marshal resources. What Should the Oversight Committee Review? There are a variety of approaches that a Compliance Oversight Committee can assume. It can dive down deeply ‘into the weeds’ for transactions which the company has identified as high risk. This can be the review of agents or other representatives in high risk areas or transactions in high risk countries. The Compliance Oversight Committee can use techniques such as continuous controls monitoring to identify any outliers of payments or other indicia of financial information which would warrant additional investigations. In addition to this remedial review, the Compliance Oversight Committee should review all payments requested by agents and representatives to assure such payment is within the company guidelines and is warranted by the contractual relationship with the company. Lastly, the Compliance Oversight Committee should review company sales or business development requests to provide compensation and, as appropriate, reimbursement for gifts, travel and entertainment of foreign governmental officials. The oversight of Foreign Business Partners is one of the key mechanisms that a company can use to prevent and detect any violation of its own Code of Ethics and Compliance and the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA). The proper structure of the Compliance Oversight Committee and its full engagement with all aspects of a company’s relationship with a Foreign Business Partner is one of the areas that the DOJ will look for in a successful FCPA compliance program. However, it is incumbent that each Compliance Oversight Committee should be designed to review the highest risks to your organization. If your company’s highest compliance risk is third party relationships, you should focus your compliance committee resources on that issue. My recommendation is that a company should incorporate both a pre-execution function and a post-execution management function in overseeing the full relationship with any third party. While this would most necessarily focus on FCPA compliance, there should also be a commercial component to this function. The Compliance Oversight Committee should therefore review all documents relevant to the five-step lifecycle management of third parties. Conclusion The Compliance Oversight Committee is a key tool which can be utilized by a company to manage its risks. The books and records component of internal controls is one level of prevention and detection. The review by a Compliance Department for requests for travel for and gifts and entertainment to foreign governmental officials and the lifecycle management of third parties is also an important step in the prevention process. However, the Compliance Oversight Committee is another step which operationalizes compliance and should be employed by companies as an additional protection against any type of compliance and ethics violation slipping through the cracks to become a much larger problem down the road. Companies should implement a Compliance Oversight Committee and review the systems they have in place to detect risky conduct. Three Key Takeaways The Justice Department has long suggested an approach of operationalizing compliance through greater senior management oversight. A Compliance Oversight Committee allows for an increased set of eyeballs on your highest risk compliance risks. A Compliance Oversight Committee acts as another control mechanism for a best practices compliance program. This month’s podcast series is sponsored by Oversight Systems, Inc. Oversight’s automated transaction monitoring solution, Insights On Demand for FCPA, operationalizes your compliance program. For more information, go to OversightSystems.com. Liberal democracies are in the business of protecting individuals and their rights. Central among these are the rights to free expression, freedom of association, and freedom of conscience. Liberal democracies are also in the business of sustaining a political environment in which citizens are regarded as political equals. In exercising their rights, some citizens will come to hold beliefs and viewpoints that are fundamentally at odds with the idea that all citizens are their equals. That is, in a free society, some citizens will come to endorse views which reject the idea of a society of free and equal citizens. Such cases seem to put the liberal democratic state in a bind. It must permit citizens to adopt and express illiberal and anti-democratic viewpoints, or else violate its commitment to the core freedoms it prizes. Yet the spread of such viewpoints, and sometimes even their very expression, can threaten the equality other citizens and undermine the stability of a democratic society. What should the state do? In his new book, When the State Speaks, What Should it Say? How Democracies can Protect Expression and Promote Equality (Princeton University Press, 2012), Corey Brettschneider proposes a view he calls “value democracy” to address this kind of quandary. He claims that although the democratic state must permit the adoption and expression of even hateful views, it nonetheless can object to and criticize them. That is, Brettschneider makes a case for thinking that the state is permitted to–and in some contexts must–employ its expressive power to combat hateful viewpoints. The book hence addresses fundamental philosophical questions concerning free speech, equality, and the authority of the democratic state. Learn more about your ad choices.
