See if you can guess this author who has sold over 200 million copies: His comic work consists of nonstop adventure featuring a boy-faced hero and his little white dog. Yes, this Stories Are Soul Food episode is about Herge, Tintin, and Snowy (or Milou, if you're Belgian, and want the dog to be named after Herge's girlfriend). Nate and Brian discuss Herge's influence on their development, Spielberg's sorta unsatisfying adaptation, and the excellent Tintin cartoons now available on Canon+ (better than Spielberg?? yes!). Nate also challenges SASF listeners to show episodes of Tintin to their children (5th grade and under) and see what comes out of brains fed with this adventurous soul food. (Do let the SASF pod know what comes of it.) The guys also discuss Herge's blatantly bad spots (Tintin in the Congo) and their excitement at being able to share a childhood favorite with so many other families. We are back, baby! Sorry about the delay, life got in the way, but we are back with a graphic novel, this time the Franco-Belgian super star Tintin with Tintin and the Blue Lotus by Hergé. The world's most famous boy(?) detective helps predict World War II and is highly critical of the Europeans in Asia. Also, comedy! Join us next episode for Redwall by Brian Jacques Host: Dr. Nic Hoffmann Co-Host: Mike Burns and Mike Carroll From the Amazon page: "Picking up where he left off in the Egyptian adventure Cigars of the Pharaoh, Tintin travels to China in The Blue Lotus, a tale which is generally considered Herge's first masterpiece. It's also Tintin's only foray into actual history, specifically the Sino-Japanese conflicts of the early 1930s. The political tensions combined with the chilling threats of drugs give the story an especially high and realistic sense of danger. Herge's interest in China was spurred by a friendship with a young Chinese student named Chang Chong-chen, a relationship that Tintin mirrors with a Chinese boy also named Chang Chong-chen. Herge paints a vivid picture of China and takes the opportunity to denounce ethnic prejudices (though ironically his artistic depiction of the Japanese businessman Mitsuhirato is quite grotesque). Years later, Tintin's relationship with Chang would become the basis of Tintin in Tibet. --David Horiuchi"

The Israeli and Palestinian characters are debating who got there first. The moment is central to the plot of Rutu Modan's latest graphic novel, while reflecting the underlying tensions of an on-going conflict that informs much of the artist's work. It pokes lighthearted fun at the matter without being heavy handed or dismissive. An exploration of such conflict peppers a story that is, at its heart, an adventure tale. Over the years, Modan's work has drawn aesthetic comparisons to Herge, and here she full embraces a search for the search for the arc of the covenant in a manner that equally embraces Spielberg.

With TUNNELS (Drawn & Quarterly, tr. We get into the true-life origin of the story, the otherwise boring results of Israeli archeology, the research that went into TUNNELS, and what it taught Rutu about her own upbringing and how the Bible is taught to Israeli children. We talk about her cartooning and storytelling influences, her less obvious tributes to Herge, her use of actors in costume for drawing reference and how they influence the characters in her books, TUNNELS' use of location as protagonist, and what it was like to draw a book with so many outdoor scenes, instead of the urban settings of her previous books, Exit Wounds and The Property. We also get into the growth of the Israeli comics scene over the course of her ~30 years in comics, her time with the Actus Tragicus comics collective and her secret origin as a cartoonist (she comes from a family of doctors, so being an artist was not an easy path), whether she considers herself an Israeli cartoonist or a cartoonist who happens to be from Israel, why she tries not to think of her audience beyond one trusted reader, her first pandemic trip to . . .Siberia (!?), our flashback to when I interviewed her in 1998, and more! Welcome to the second half of my very intimate conversation with Jeff Herge. As you learned in the first episode, Jeff worked for the Department of Defense and was inside the Pentagon the morning of September 11th, 2001. His recount of that day takes a lot of courage and has been very inspiring to many of my listeners. If there is anyone in the world who is hearing Ian, Charisse and Jeff's stories and has their own story to tell about that day, please reach out to me at thisisyourshowpodcast@gmail.com. If I can provide you a space to tell your story I would be honored in doing so.

Jeff Herge is heroic! And I may not be referring to the type of heroism where someone goes running into gunfire or towards danger on purpose, but he is someone who, in the time of dire need, can put his own fears and anxieties aside to do what is asked of him for the sake of his country. He is also humble. Which means he, in his own words, would say that he is a regular guy just doing his job. In other words, a true patriot! The story you are about to hear is his account of the events that took place while he was at work at the Pentagon on the morning of September 11th, 2001. I have broken this story up into two parts as it is graciously detailed and at times even became a bit much for Jeff. There are many levels to the aftermath of 9/11 as it affected all of us in many different ways. I know people in Canada who feared for their lives as it was close enough to home for us!! In my last 2 interviews with Ian and Charisse, it pained me not being able to put myself in their shoes to sympathize with them on a deeper level. However, allowing them the space to talk about their experience with 9/11 brought Jeff to me, willing to provide his story. If you or anyone you know suffers from PTSD and have not found a means to manage it, please contact your local mental health center and speak to a professional. As you will learn in these 2 episodes, talking about your trauma is a good place to start healing from it. thisisyourshowpodcast@gmail.com tylerfriedelproductions@gmail.com

For the month of October we've decided to look at a different movie franchise each week, starting with Indiana Jones! Banes and Tantz have way more knowledge about the films than I, having watched them much more, but we all have a fondness for the character. Who is Indiana Jones? He's a 1930s style pulp fiction adventure hero archaeologist. Based on a mixture of things, from the hoax Grand Canyon adventurer G.E. Kinkaid to the characters of Edgar Rice Burroughs, you can even see a bit of Herge's Tintin and Robert E Howard's El Borak in him. But he's cynical and clever in a way that's solidly 1980s. He's an action hero who takes damage, he's not entirely pure and he doesn't always fight fair, but he uses his brain, which is why we love him. Movie franchises relate well to the structure of long form comics- characters stay much the same while their worlds change and develop over a long period of time. Movie franchises are developed over the course of years or even decades, much like webcomics, and they usually focus on big, bombastic characters or worlds, again very much like comics. This week Gunwallace has given us the theme to Out of the Blue: Retro futurism! What are the main differences between the American and the European comic book? Their history, their political context, topics they choose to focus on, the culture they represent, and social commentary. Gil Kidron talks with American novelist, Literature Professor and Writing Professor Theo Gangi and Dutch evolutionary biologist Dr. Rutger Vos about Asterix, Tintin, Superman, Marvel, Stan Lee, Herge, Thorgal, Manga and much more. We discuss the context in which the art form first boomed. The role of the Second World War, during which time the medium became politically polarized and a tool for propaganda. The post-war recovery, when new identities and narratives were being constructed and colonialism was winding down. The technological development, going from cheap serials to hardcover graphic novels. The professionalization of comics, when series started to be taken over by studios rather than the original authors. And the big question: why is Belgium a comics superpower? What is that reason for success in the medium on the part of some but not others? With My Young Life (Simon & Schuster), Frederic Tuten had to get over his notion that memoir is a cheap shot in order to look back at the beginning of a career in writing, teaching, and art criticism in the New York of the 1940s, '50s, and '60s. We get into what started him on this book, how he's haunted by his childhood in the Bronx, his emphasis on quality over quantity in literary output (while coping with the cautionary example of his writing teacher, Leonard Ehrlich, who only published a single, well-acclaimed novel), his mentorship by artist and convicted murderer John Resko, the joys of cafe culture (and his favorite haunt, Cafe Mogador), and how he got two-timed by "the Elizabeth Taylor of the Bronx" with Jerome Charyn. We also lament today's celebration of the mundane, celebrate his friendships with Herge, Lichtenstein, Resnais and Queneau, and talk about the books he wants loaded in his casket when he dies, the great allure of Juan Rulfo's sole book, Pedro Paramo, why future pod-guest Iris Smyles' first novel is better than F. Scott Fitzgerald's first novel, how fact-checker Anne Stringfield corrected some virtual memories in My Young Life, how poverty shaped his later life, what he learned from sobriety, Gaugin and The Magic Mountain, and plenty more! • More info at our site • Support The Virtual Memories Show via Patreon or Paypal

Sarrah discusses the three studios that produced this film, and tells us about Clear Line art, also known as the style of art that Herge made famous. Our walk-through has us realizing how condensing a full book into fifteen minutes leads to some confusion, how it can be frustrating when things come just a bit too easily, Aly's fantastic (apparently) Tintin impersonation, and how attached we get to Snowy. It's really all about Snowy. So buckle in, keep your eyes open, and maybe leave that whiskey at home (we're looking at you Haddock!), as we travel with Tintin to Peru! In this Quackcast we cover the Importance of good linework in comics and different line techniques such as Herge's Ligne claire, the traditional thick line for characters and thin for everything else as exemplified in the work of Mucha, variable line widths as in Manga, solid blacks like in American comics, and complex lines like Durer or Hyena Hell. I really seriously thought I could get an entire Quackcast out of the concept and techniques of linework, but honestly I was struggling… Okay, so linework constitutes the skeleton that most comics are built on, with the notable exception of painted comics, photo comics, 3D and vector comic among others… But for most comics line is a pretty essential element. There are a lot of different techniques involved in the use of lines. Herge popularised “ligne claire”, which means that all lines have the same thickness and that there's no line shading. A popular style that I was taut was to have thick lines around characters and overlapping elements, with thin lines for internals and backgrounds. This is popular in a lot of manga, US comics and famously the work of Alphonse Mucha. Part of my technique on Pinky TA involves making my lines grey, so that when I set the line layer to “multiply”, the lines take on some of the background colours beneath them and don't show up as darkly as traditional black lines. The work of Hyena Hell on the Hub is interesting for her use of very complex internal shading line to build up texture and shapes, this can also be seen in the works of Albrecht Durer. Manga is notable for its extensive use of very stylised shading, crisp lines and the use of variable line widths for outlines, while American comics make heavy use of solid blacks for areas of shadow, basically extending the width of the line as far and as solidly as it can go. How do YOU approach your linework? The music for this week by Gunwallace is for The Wallachian Library.

Unofficially labeled ‘The Nitnit Trilogy', Charles Burns' latest comics work finished this year with the publication of “Sugar Skull” following the release of “X'ed Out” in 2010 and “The Hive” in 2012. With all three volumes in hand, Mike and Greg take a look at the story both as a whole and as a collection of pieces from other sources. Burns' inspiration for these books ranges from Herge's TinTin to Silver Age romance comics with a healthy dosage of Burrough's cut-up technique thrown in, and these factors plus many, many others come into play in this discussion. Find out who else besides Burns is carved onto Mike's alt-cartoonist Mount Rushmore, what Greg thought the skeleton of the story was, where David Lynch fits into all this, what the fourth book in the trilogy is and where you can or can't find it, and so much more! Robots From Tomorrow is a weekly comics podcast recorded deep beneath the Earth's surface. You can subscribe to it via iTunes or through the RSS feed at RobotsFromTomorrow.com.
