Is it possible that consciousness can be preserved, transferred, or even trapped in objects and systems? From ancient curse tablets and voodoo dolls to modern AI and cryogenic experiments, humanity has long sought to escape the limits of mortality. But if consciousness operates like energy—capable of interacting with the world across time and matter—what might we uncover at the intersection of magic, technology, and the soul? Or more unsettlingly, what might we become? If you are having a mental health crisis and need immediate help please go to https://troubledminds.org/help/ and call somebody right now. Those in the “Torah Community” are almost always familiar with the tassels (Hebrew, tzitzit), but not many are familiar with the phylacteries (also called tefillin). What are they, what are they based upon (in Scripture) and should we wear them? This lesson tackles all of that and looks at some archeological evidence towards the end.

Prior to initiating the war of conquest of the land of Canaan, the nation did the prudent thing: they undertook a reconnaissance mission to scout out the enemy defenses. Moshe selected 12 righteous men, one from each tribe, to traverse the land and inspect it from the inside. The result was a catastrophic disaster: the scouts brought a devastating report about the land, prompting the people to lose faith in God and in the prospect of entering Canaan. In this Parsha podcast, we explore three elements of the Parsha: the first segment orients around one of the descriptions of the land offered by the scouts. The second and third segments relate to the end of the Parsha: The execution of a person who was gathering twigs on Shabbos, and the commandment to tie fringes to corners of our garments.– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –DONATE to TORCH: Please consider supporting the podcasts by making a donation to help fund our Jewish outreach and educational efforts at https://www.torchweb.org/support.php. On a wall in our family room hangs a plaque with 1 Corinthians 15:58: “Your labour in the Lord is not in vain.” As my wife and I prepared to return to the U.S. from Vietnam, where we served for many years, a good friend of ours, a Vietnamese pastor and church planter, gave us this plaque as a farewell present. It holds a special place of honor in our home. This plaque symbolizes our desire to put God’s Word at the center of family life. In Deuteronomy 6, we learn two significant truths. The first is that God is one (v. 4, called the “Shema”). As opposed to those in the ancient Near East who worshiped many gods, Christians worship only one true God. He alone is worthy of our worship. The second truth is also known as the greatest commandment: We are to love God “with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength” (v. 5). Such love includes wholehearted faith and uncompromising obedience. How can we live out these two truths? They should be on our hearts and thoughts. We should reflect or meditate on them in our inmost beings (v. 6). We should talk about them often, during all kinds of situations and activities, especially in our homes and with our children (v. 7). These truths and God’s commandments in general should be at the heart of our personal and family lives (vv. 8–9; see also Prov. 3:3). Many Jews take the imagery of verses 8 and 9 literally. They tie phylacteries to their foreheads and left arms and attach mezuzot to the doorframes of their houses. Phylacteries and mezuzot are small boxes with specific Scripture passages inside—including today’s reading. >> How do you keep God and His Word at the center of your life? Do you post Bible verses in places as reminders? Some people hang plaques, others use screen savers. Today there are many ways you can keep God and His Word at the forefront of your mind.
Matt 23:1-12 “23:1. Then Jesus spoke to the multitudes and to his disciples, 23:2. Saying: The scribes and the Pharisees have sitten on the chair of Moses. 23:3. All things therefore whatsoever they shall say to you, observe and do: but according to their works do ye not. For they say, and do not. 23:4. For they bind heavy and insupportable burdens and lay them on men's shoulders: but with a finger of their own they will not move them. 23:5. And all their works they do for to be seen of men. For they make their phylacteries broad and enlarge their fringes. Phylacteries. . .that is, parchments, on which they wrote the ten commandments, and carried them on their foreheads before their eyes: which the Pharisees affected to wear broader than other men; so to seem more zealous for the law. 23:6. And they love the first places at feasts and the first chairs in the synagogues, “23:7. And salutations in the market place, and to be called by men, Rabbi. 23:8. But be not you called Rabbi. For one is your master: and all you are brethren. 23:9. And call none your father upon earth; for one is your father, who is in heaven. Call none your father—Neither be ye called masters, etc. . .The meaning is that our Father in heaven is incomparably more to be regarded, than any father upon earth: and no master to be followed, who would lead us away from Christ. But this does not hinder but that we are by the law of God to have a due respect both for our parents and spiritual fathers, (1 Cor. 4. 23:15,) and for our masters and teachers. 23:10. Neither be ye called masters: for one is your master, Christ. 23:11. He that is the greatest among you shall be your servant. 23:12. And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be humbled: and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted.” Excerpt From The Bible, Douay-Rheims, Complete Anonymous https://books.apple.com/us/book/the-bible-douay-rheims-complete/id955129088 This material may be protected by copyright.

One of the most important duties of all parents is to teach the Word of God to their children. Today, we're looking at a powerful passage that calls us to always be about the work of teaching Gods' Word to those around us. Join us for another important study in the Key Chapters of God's Word! DISCUSSION AND THOUGHT QUESTIONS: 1. Read over Deuteronomy 6:1-3, why is there such earnestness in these words? What attitude are Moses and the Lord exhorting God's people to have towards His Word? How much do these words match your devotion to God's Word? 2. Why is this passage called the “Shema”? What does the word “Shema” even mean? 3. The podcast mentioned that the last letter of the last word of Deuteronomy 6:4 is larger than normal. This is called a majuscule. What did it signify? 4. What did the podcast say that ancient rabbis called this passage? How often is this passage recited by an observant Jew? Why? 5. According to verse 5, what should our heart-attitude be towards the Lord? How does this verse demonstrate the interconnection of a heart, soul and strength? What were some ways suggested by the podcast for how we can develop this kind of love for the Lord? 6. The podcast suggested that the phrase “upon your heart” in verse 6 was indicating that God's people ought to memorize His Word. Do you have a program for scripture memorization? If not, there are many phone apps that are great tools for verse memory. 7. The NIV translation of verse 7 calls us to “impress” God's Word upon our children. The Hebrew word denotes patient labor and time. Why is it the parent's responsibility to teach God's Word to our children? How can our instruction help prepare them for the barrage of messages from the world? 8. In verse 7, what do the phrases “sit”, “walk”, “lie down” and “rise up” indicate about the places where parents are to teach God's Word to their children? What do they indicate about the frequency? If you have children, what are some practical ways that you can faithfully obey this passage? 9. How do observant Jews literally follow the instructions of verses 8 & 9? Why did the podcast suggest that this should be taken more metaphorically? What are some ways that Christians might follow the spirit of this verse? 10. This passage teaches that parents have a special role in the spiritual instruction and guidance of their children. Why do parents have this special role? According to Deuteronomy 6, what is their responsibility in these matters? How will God help them as they seek to obey Him in these pursuits? Madlik Podcast – Torah Thoughts on Judaism From a Post-Orthodox Jew
Parshat Bo - A live recording of Madlik Disruptive Torah recorded on Clubhouse with Geoffrey Stern, Rabbi Adam Mintz, Rabbi Abraham Bronstein and “The Haftorahman”, Reuben Ebrahimoff on January 6th 2022. Can Biblical commandments evolve and have alternative meanings at different times and to different people? Mitzvot; for some an obligation, for others a political, cultural or fashion statement and for still others a magical charm. In Exodus 13 we are introduced to the first formal commandments given in the Torah; a book of Law. These laws relate exclusively to the celebration of the first and subsequent Passovers. Out of nowhere we also find the first reference to what was to become the commandment of Tefillin. We explore the classical commentators and modern scholarship to discover the multiple layers and nuances behind tefillin and possibly all mitzvot. We continue our midweek Lenten series of exploring what took place on the three days between Palm Sunday and Maundy Thursday. We can learn a lot by listening to and watching various teachers in our lives. Some of what we learn from others can be good and beneficial. And some of it can be negative and harmful. It is Tuesday of Holy Week, and Jesus is just three days away from being arrested, tried, convicted, crucified, killed, and buried. In our Scripture lesson for today, Jesus, always the Teacher, refers to both types of learning when he speaks to the crowds and to his disciples. Jesus has significant teaching for His followers, both what not to do and what He has done for us.
READ: Proverbs 3:1-2 NLT 'My child, never forget the things I have taught you. Store my commands in your heart. If you do this, you will live many years, and your life will be satisfying.' What’s your memory like? Time and again I trudge upstairs to get something and haven’t a clue what I’m looking for by the time I get there! Pathetically, I try to find something else useful to do whilst I’m there to justify the journey! I would love to think that you have never had such an experience, but I have reason to believe that I might not be alone. Forgetting things is part of the human condition and always has been, and the writer of Proverbs addresses the issue repeatedly. He urges us not to forget what we’ve been taught, whether it was by our parents or our spiritual teachers. This involves planning. We need to pepper our lives with reminders of the essential truths. We need to evolve a rhythm to our lives so that we are repeatedly reminded of what matters most. From earliest times Jews had a variety of articles which gave them a constant reminder of the law. Phylacteries are small leather boxes which contain the Hebrew texts on vellum and are worn by some Jewish men at morning prayer as a reminder to the keep the law. And on the door frame of their homes they affix a mezuzah, a decorative case containing the Jewish prayer, “Hear O Israel. The Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.” It’s good for us all to build into our lives reminders of God’s love and faithfulness. Triggers that will keep us on track and prevent us from forgetting about God. It doesn’t matter how we do this. Some people have Bible verses on their walls or on fridge magnets or receive verses by email or app. What matters is that we don’t forget. Supremely we have the Communion Service or Eucharist which Jesus gave to us as a way of ensuring that we would not forget his sacrificial death for us on the Cross. QUESTION: What do you find the most effective way of reminding you of God’s love? PRAYER: Loving Father, help me never to forget your perfect love for me and for this needy world. Amen.
Instead of teaching only the law of Moses, the scribes and Pharisees added countless laws of their own. Instead of making the people's load lighter, they made it heavier. People could profit from listening to the scribes' teaching of Moses' law, but they were not to copy the scribes' behaviour (Matt 23:1-4). Jesus gave two specific reasons for his condemnation of the scribes. First, they wanted to make a display of their religious devotion so that they might win praise from others. Second, they paid strict attention to small details of law-keeping but they ignored the law's real meaning.

Rev. Jeff Hemmer, pastor at Bethany Lutheran Church in Fairview Heights, IL, joins host Rev. Timothy Appel to study Matthew 23:1-12. Throughout Jesus’ Holy Week teaching, the scribes and Pharisees have continued their angry unbelief toward Him. He now turns away from them to address those who have been receptive to His teaching. He warns His disciples and the crowds concerning these false teachers. When they speak as heirs of Moses’ teaching, repeating the Word of God, that Word does continue to bear authority that must be heard and believed. But the false deeds and actions of the scribes and Pharisees must not be followed. They only add burdens to people, demanding a righteousness that comes through the Law, without giving any aid to people, because they lead people away from Christ. Instead of doing good works in service to the neighbor, the Pharisees and scribes are only concerned with being seen and praised by others. Jesus warns against such misuse of the vocations that He has given. Those who would be teachers in the Church have no authority of their own; the authority belongs to Christ alone. This authority is not the false greatness that the Pharisees sought after; instead, this authority is one of service and sacrifice, exemplified in the humility of the Son of God by His death on the cross. “All Righteousness Fulfilled” is a mini-series on Sharper Iron that digs into the Gospel according to St. Matthew. The first evangelist proclaims Jesus to Jews and Gentiles alike as the fulfillment of God’s saving words and acts throughout the Old Testament. As the Christ in the line of David and Abraham, Jesus is the promised King who comes to bring sinners from every nation to live under His gracious reign.
