Aujourd'hui je vous conseille un genre littéraire propice à la reprise de la lecture ! Comment trouver un livre qui nous fera regoûter à aux émotions intenses de la lecture ? Un livre facile à lire qui nous happe rapidement. Pour ne pas trop nous éloigner dans un premier temps des séries qui peuplent bon nombre de nos soirées, je vous propose un genre littéraire très addictif, je vous propose de vous lancer dans le merveilleux monde des sagas familiales. Độc giả Việt Nam không còn xa lạ với những tên tuổi lớn của nền văn học cổ điển và đương đại Pháp Annie Ernaux, Modiano, Pierre Lemaître, Marc Levy, Guillaume Musso, Frédéric Beigbeder, Françoise Sagan, Daniel Pennac, Romain Gary… Gần đây, việc nhà văn Marc Levy được chào đón nồng nhiệt tại thành phố Hồ Chí Minh thể hiện phần nào sự quan tâm đó của độc giả Việt Nam, đặc biệt là giới trẻ. Độc giả Việt Nam : Fan của văn học Pháp Có thể thấy, sách văn học Pháp không còn chỉ gói trong những tác phẩm kinh điển như Những người khốn khổ, Tấm da lừa, Ba chàng lính ngự lâm hay Hoàng tử bé... Trả lời RFI Tiếng Việt, anh Nguyễn Xuân Minh, phụ trách bản quyền công ty Nhã Nam, nhận xét : “Do ảnh hưởng văn hóa từ những năm 1930-1945 đến nay - đó là cả một quá trình dài - cho nên độc giả Việt Nam tiếp nhận sách Pháp khá là cởi mở, đặc biệt là các tác phẩm văn chương kinh điển đã được độc giả Việt Nam đón nhận từ thời những năm 1930-1945. Ví dụ, Ba chàng lính ngự lâm đã được Nguyễn Văn Vĩnh dịch. Sau đó có cả một truyền thống dịch văn học Pháp: Balzac, Hugo đều đã được dịch rất là lâu rồi. Độc giả Việt Nam đã có cả một quá trình dài tiếp xúc với văn chương Pháp, cho nên việc xuất bản sách văn học Pháp tại Việt Nam không quá là khó khăn”. Theo thống kê của Viện Pháp tại Hà Nội, trong khoảng 10 năm gần đây, số đầu sách Pháp được chuyển nhượng bản quyền cho xuất bản Việt Nam đã tăng hơn gấp năm lần : từ 50 tác phẩm trong năm 2011 lên thành 266 trong năm 2020 và đỉnh điểm là năm 2017 với 335 tác phẩm. Đây là kết quả của một hành trình dài, bắt đầu từ năm 1990, với Chương trình hỗ trợ xuất bản Nguyễn Văn Vĩnh (PAP) của đại sứ quán Pháp tại Việt Nam. Mục đích là “trợ giúp các nhà xuất bản Việt Nam thực hiện một chính sách dài hạn trong việc xuất bản các ấn phẩm bằng tiếng Pháp, tiếng Việt hoặc song ngữ của các tác giả Pháp trong nhiều lĩnh vực (văn học, khoa học xã hội và nhân văn, khoa học kĩ thuật, thanh thiếu niên, văn hóa nghệ thuật, v.v..)”. Nhưng nhìn chung, theo đánh giá của anh Nguyễn Xuân Minh, những mảng sách khác của Pháp vẫn khá kén độc giả và gặp không ít khó khăn để xuất bản ở Việt Nam : “Ngoài sách văn học, Pháp còn có rất nhiều dòng sách khác, cả một thị trường lớn, như sách nuôi dạy con, sách về khoa học phổ thông, sách khoa học cho thiếu nhi, truyện tranh “bande dessinée”. Đối với những dòng sách này, ở Việt Nam thường có những mối quan tâm riêng, khác nhau. Ví dụ dòng sách nuôi dạy con, hiện nay độc giả Việt Nam sẽ hơi thiên về của Nhật hay của Hàn Quốc vì có sự tương đồng văn hóa. Về dòng sách tranh của Pháp nói riêng và của châu Âu nói chung, ở Việt Nam cũng khá khó khăn khi tiếp cận độc giả trẻ. Các bố mẹ trẻ hay mua sách tranh album của Hàn Quốc hay Nhật Bản - đây là một dòng sách được quảng cáo rất mạnh, hoặc sách tranh của Trung Quốc vì giá thành rẻ hơn và các nhà xuất bản Việt Nam cũng sẽ ưu tiên vì phí bản quyền thấp. Ngoài ra, còn có một dòng sách đặc biệt của Pháp và châu Âu mà hiện nay cũng tương đối khó khăn để xuất bản ở Việt Nam, đó là truyện tranh “bande dessinée”, bởi vì thường mọi người có quan niệm truyện tranh là truyện tranh của Nhật Bản hoặc của Hàn Quốc hay Trung Quốc. Truyện tranh châu Âu có một thời gian rộ lên là Lucky Luck hay Marsupilami hoặc Tintin, rất là nổi. Tuy nhiên, sau một thời gian, làn sóng truyện tranh châu Âu, Pháp và Bỉ đã lắng xuống. Mặc dù tôi thấy ở Pháp rất phát triển, cho dù là tiểu thuyết hay sách khoa học, đều có thể chuyển thể thành truyện tranh “bande dessinée”, nhưng sang đến Việt Nam thì tương đối khó khăn khi xuất bản dòng sách này. Thứ nhất là do chi phí bản quyền khá cao. Thứ hai là chi phí in mầu, chất lượng cao, đẹp như sách gốc thì cũng rất cao và dẫn đến giá thành cao. Thứ ba là độc giả Việt Nam chưa có thói quen tiếp nhận và đọc dòng sách này nhiều. Đó là ba khó khăn khi chúng tôi muốn giới thiệu lại dòng truyện tranh của Pháp, Bỉ, châu Âu đến với độc giả Việt Nam”. Hỗ trợ xuất bản để đưa sách Pháp đến với độc giả Việt Trong hơn 30 hoạt động, chương trình PAP đã hỗ trợ kinh phí xuất bản khoảng 500 tác phẩm dịch từ tiếng Pháp, trung bình khoảng 15 đầu sách mỗi năm. Kết quả này có ý nghĩa quan trọng tại một đất nước mà lượng độc giả Pháp ngữ vẫn còn hạn chế. Chương trình chú trọng đến chất lượng bản dịch, khuyến khích các nhà xuất bản trả thù lao xứng đáng cho những dịch giả có trình độ. Một số dịch giả Việt Nam (dịch một tác phẩm được chương trình hỗ trợ) có thể được tài trợ một khóa làm việc tại Pháp 2-3 tháng. Về hợp tác với các nhà xuất bản Việt Nam dịch sách Pháp, chương trình PAP hỗ trợ tài chính đến 50% một dự án dịch (chi phí in ấn, phí bản quyền, dịch thuật), giúp đỡ những nhà xuất bản này chuyên môn hóa bằng cách xác lập chính sách xuất bản và tôn trọng quyền tác giả. Nhiều nhà xuất bản Việt Nam dịch sách Pháp được mời sang dự hội chợ sách tại Pháp để tìm hiểu thị trường, thăm các nhà xuất bản đối tác tại Pháp và gặp gỡ với bộ phận bản quyền. Đầu tháng 12/2022, một phái đoàn gồm năm nhà xuất bản ở Hà Nội đã tham dự Hội chợ sách báo trẻ Montreuil (30/11-05/12) trong khuôn khổ chương trình này. Chị Vũ Thị Quỳnh Liên, nhà xuất bản Kim Đồng, đánh giá cao sự năng động của Chương trình hỗ trợ xuất bản Nguyễn Văn Vĩnh : “Ngoài việc hỗ trợ các nhà xuất bản Việt Nam được tham dự những chương trình như này, còn có rất nhiều chương trình hỗ trợ khác, ví dụ hỗ trợ về phí bản quyền hoặc hỗ trợ - mà tôi nghĩ là rất thiết thực - đưa các tác giả Pháp sang Việt Nam giao lưu với độc giả Việt Nam. Hoạt động đó là một sự tương tác, hỗ trợ ngược lại cho các nhà xuất bản rất lớn, vì các nhà xuất bản đã mua bản quyền và xuất bản sách tại Việt Nam, sau đó độc giả lại được tương tác trực tiếp với tác giả, tôi cho rằng đó là hoạt động rất hữu ích. Ngoài ra, Viện Pháp còn có rất nhiều chương trình đào tạo về dịch thuật. Tôi đánh giá các hoạt động của Viện Pháp là rất tổng quan, vì từ gốc là giới thiệu các tác phẩm Pháp, sau đó đào tạo người dịch, tiếp theo là hỗ trợ phần tổ chức các sự kiện, triển lãm sách hoặc ra mắt các buổi đọc sách tại thư viện Pháp và mời tác giả đến giao lưu. Tôi đánh giá là tại Việt Nam, Viện Pháp là một trong những viện tích cực nhất trong các hoạt động hỗ trợ về xuất bản và văn hóa”. Chị Phạm Bích Ngọc, nhà xuất bản Thế Giới, thích thêm về Chương trình hỗ trợ xuất bản Nguyễn Văn Vĩnh : “Tùy từng chương trình xuất bản của từng năm, Viện Pháp sẽ hỗ trợ mời tác giả của chính quyển sách đó sang giao lưu với độc giả Việt Nam. Đặc biệt nhất là có chương trình “Ngày hội Sách châu Âu”, được tổ chức vào trung tuần tháng 5 hàng năm. Pháp đóng góp rất quan trọng trong việc hỗ trợ các nhà xuất bản có sách Pháp được giới thiệu tại ngày hội văn hóa đó, ví dụ tổ chức sự kiện ra mắt sách, trưng bày sách, giao lưu với độc giả và có các buổi tọa đàm. Đó là hoạt động rất thiết thực bởi vì không có những hoạt động đó thì sách của Pháp sẽ không thể nào có thể có được sự lan tỏa rộng như thời gian vừa qua. Đặc biệt trong đại dịch, Viện Pháp còn hỗ trợ chúng tôi làm những sự kiện trực tuyến khi không mời được tác giả sang. Những công việc đó là sự động viên vô cùng lớn và vô cùng giá trị đối với công việc xuất bản sách của chúng tôi nói riêng, cũng như phát triển văn hóa nói chung và hợp tác hữu nghị giữa hai Nhà nước”. Từ dịch sách đến quảng bá văn hóa Pháp Tại sao lại là dịch sách ? Phòng Sách của Viện Pháp giải thích là “các tác phẩm dịch có vai trò đặc biệt khi số lượng độc giả có khả năng đọc sách bằng tiếng Pháp tại Việt Nam vẫn còn hạn chế. Việc dịch các tác phẩm Pháp sang tiếng Việt cũng giúp các tác phẩm này tiếp cận đến một lượng công chúng rộng rãi hơn”. Ngoài ra, thông qua những chương trình tham dự hội chợ sách tại Pháp, các nhà xuất bản Việt Nam còn có thể học kinh nghiệm tổ chức sự kiện tương tự, phát triển thú vui, đam mê đọc sách tới độc giả ở Việt Nam. Chị Quỳnh Liên, nhà xuất bản Kim Đồng, cho biết tiếp : “Việc được đến Hội chợ Sách là cơ hội rất tốt vì ngoài có thể được xem, nhìn chung mặt bằng sách Pháp như thế nào, thì còn được xem, chứng kiến những hoạt động tương tác giữa nhà xuất bản với bạn đọc, mà ở đây là các bạn đọc thiếu nhi. Và đúng là có rất nhiều điều mà chúng tôi thấy có thể học tập được, ví dụ những chương trình đọc sách rất linh hoạt, có khi chỉ là một góc nhỏ thôi, nhưng có những tác giả đến đọc sách hay ký tặng, hoặc có những góc sáng tạo để cho các em tự vẽ tranh. Nói chung là rất thoải mái, nằm ngồi, bò lê bò toài. Phải nói là ở Việt Nam không có nhiều hoạt động như thế”. Đối với chị Bích Ngọc, người nhiều lần tham dự hội chợ sách tại Pháp, có thể học tập về cách tổ chức quy mô cũng như sự đa dạng về hệ thống đề tài của hội chợ sách : “Tôi thấy họ thay đổi đề tài một cách rõ rệt. Ngoài việc tương đồng với xu thế của thời cuộc, nó còn thể hiện truyền thống rất nhân văn của nước Pháp. Và hệ thống đề tài sách khoa học xã hội nhân văn, tuy dành cho trẻ em nhưng thể hiện sự phong phú đến người lớn cũng cần học tập, cũng như những nhà làm sách cần phải suy nghĩ lại về cách thức, đề tài làm sao để cho không những chỉ dành cho trẻ em mà còn là sách dành cho gia đình, cho các bậc phụ huynh cũng như trong nhà trường. Chúng tôi cũng thấy mừng vì các nhà xuất bản của Pháp tổ chức được một hội chợ quy mô. Dĩ nhiên các nhà xuất bản đến là để bán sách, nhưng có sự giao lưu mà tôi thấy rất xúc động, vì sách gần như đến tận tay độc giả, dù nhỏ tuổi nhất. Ngược lại, độc giả mọi lứa tuổi có thể tiếp xúc với các nhà văn, có thể là các thần tượng của họ bấy lâu nay. Đó là một cách làm mà chúng tôi phải học tập rất nhiều”.

Ngoài ra, còn có một dòng sách đặc biệt của Pháp và châu Âu mà hiện nay cũng tương đối khó khăn để xuất bản ở Việt Nam, đó là truyện tranh “bande dessinée”, bởi vì thường mọi người có quan niệm truyện tranh là truyện tranh của Nhật Bản hoặc của Hàn Quốc hay Trung Quốc. Truyện tranh châu Âu có một thời gian rộ lên là Lucky Luck hay Marsupilami hoặc Tintin, rất là nổi. Tuy nhiên, sau một thời gian, làn sóng truyện tranh châu Âu, Pháp và Bỉ đã lắng xuống. Mặc dù tôi thấy ở Pháp rất phát triển, cho dù là tiểu thuyết hay sách khoa học, đều có thể chuyển thể thành truyện tranh “bande dessinée”, nhưng sang đến Việt Nam thì tương đối khó khăn khi xuất bản dòng sách này. Thứ nhất là do chi phí bản quyền khá cao. Thứ hai là chi phí in mầu, chất lượng cao, đẹp như sách gốc thì cũng rất cao và dẫn đến giá thành cao. Thứ ba là độc giả Việt Nam chưa có thói quen tiếp nhận và đọc dòng sách này nhiều. Đó là ba khó khăn khi chúng tôi muốn giới thiệu lại dòng truyện tranh của Pháp, Bỉ, châu Âu đến với độc giả Việt Nam”. Hỗ trợ xuất bản để đưa sách Pháp đến với độc giả Việt Trong hơn 30 hoạt động, chương trình PAP đã hỗ trợ kinh phí xuất bản khoảng 500 tác phẩm dịch từ tiếng Pháp, trung bình khoảng 15 đầu sách mỗi năm. Kết quả này có ý nghĩa quan trọng tại một đất nước mà lượng độc giả Pháp ngữ vẫn còn hạn chế. Chương trình chú trọng đến chất lượng bản dịch, khuyến khích các nhà xuất bản trả thù lao xứng đáng cho những dịch giả có trình độ. Một số dịch giả Việt Nam (dịch một tác phẩm được chương trình hỗ trợ) có thể được tài trợ một khóa làm việc tại Pháp 2-3 tháng. Về hợp tác với các nhà xuất bản Việt Nam dịch sách Pháp, chương trình PAP hỗ trợ tài chính đến 50% một dự án dịch (chi phí in ấn, phí bản quyền, dịch thuật), giúp đỡ những nhà xuất bản này chuyên môn hóa bằng cách xác lập chính sách xuất bản và tôn trọng quyền tác giả. Nhiều nhà xuất bản Việt Nam dịch sách Pháp được mời sang dự hội chợ sách tại Pháp để tìm hiểu thị trường, thăm các nhà xuất bản đối tác tại Pháp và gặp gỡ với bộ phận bản quyền. Đầu tháng 12/2022, một phái đoàn gồm năm nhà xuất bản ở Hà Nội đã tham dự Hội chợ sách báo trẻ Montreuil (30/11-05/12) trong khuôn khổ chương trình này. Chị Vũ Thị Quỳnh Liên, nhà xuất bản Kim Đồng, đánh giá cao sự năng động của Chương trình hỗ trợ xuất bản Nguyễn Văn Vĩnh : “Ngoài việc hỗ trợ các nhà xuất bản Việt Nam được tham dự những chương trình như này, còn có rất nhiều chương trình hỗ trợ khác, ví dụ hỗ trợ về phí bản quyền hoặc hỗ trợ - mà tôi nghĩ là rất thiết thực - đưa các tác giả Pháp sang Việt Nam giao lưu với độc giả Việt Nam. Hoạt động đó là một sự tương tác, hỗ trợ ngược lại cho các nhà xuất bản rất lớn, vì các nhà xuất bản đã mua bản quyền và xuất bản sách tại Việt Nam, sau đó độc giả lại được tương tác trực tiếp với tác giả, tôi cho rằng đó là hoạt động rất hữu ích. Ngoài ra, Viện Pháp còn có rất nhiều chương trình đào tạo về dịch thuật. Tôi đánh giá các hoạt động của Viện Pháp là rất tổng quan, vì từ gốc là giới thiệu các tác phẩm Pháp, sau đó đào tạo người dịch, tiếp theo là hỗ trợ phần tổ chức các sự kiện, triển lãm sách hoặc ra mắt các buổi đọc sách tại thư viện Pháp và mời tác giả đến giao lưu. Tôi đánh giá là tại Việt Nam, Viện Pháp là một trong những viện tích cực nhất trong các hoạt động hỗ trợ về xuất bản và văn hóa”. Chị Phạm Bích Ngọc, nhà xuất bản Thế Giới, thích thêm về Chương trình hỗ trợ xuất bản Nguyễn Văn Vĩnh : “Tùy từng chương trình xuất bản của từng năm, Viện Pháp sẽ hỗ trợ mời tác giả của chính quyển sách đó sang giao lưu với độc giả Việt Nam. Đặc biệt nhất là có chương trình “Ngày hội Sách châu Âu”, được tổ chức vào trung tuần tháng 5 hàng năm. Pháp đóng góp rất quan trọng trong việc hỗ trợ các nhà xuất bản có sách Pháp được giới thiệu tại ngày hội văn hóa đó, ví dụ tổ chức sự kiện ra mắt sách, trưng bày sách, giao lưu với độc giả và có các buổi tọa đàm. Đó là hoạt động rất thiết thực bởi vì không có những hoạt động đó thì sách của Pháp sẽ không thể nào có thể có được sự lan tỏa rộng như thời gian vừa qua. Đặc biệt trong đại dịch, Viện Pháp còn hỗ trợ chúng tôi làm những sự kiện trực tuyến khi không mời được tác giả sang. Những công việc đó là sự động viên vô cùng lớn và vô cùng giá trị đối với công việc xuất bản sách của chúng tôi nói riêng, cũng như phát triển văn hóa nói chung và hợp tác hữu nghị giữa hai Nhà nước”. Từ dịch sách đến quảng bá văn hóa Pháp Tại sao lại là dịch sách ? Phòng Sách của Viện Pháp giải thích là “các tác phẩm dịch có vai trò đặc biệt khi số lượng độc giả có khả năng đọc sách bằng tiếng Pháp tại Việt Nam vẫn còn hạn chế. Việc dịch các tác phẩm Pháp sang tiếng Việt cũng giúp các tác phẩm này tiếp cận đến một lượng công chúng rộng rãi hơn”. Ngoài ra, thông qua những chương trình tham dự hội chợ sách tại Pháp, các nhà xuất bản Việt Nam còn có thể học kinh nghiệm tổ chức sự kiện tương tự, phát triển thú vui, đam mê đọc sách tới độc giả ở Việt Nam. Chị Quỳnh Liên, nhà xuất bản Kim Đồng, cho biết tiếp : “Việc được đến Hội chợ Sách là cơ hội rất tốt vì ngoài có thể được xem, nhìn chung mặt bằng sách Pháp như thế nào, thì còn được xem, chứng kiến những hoạt động tương tác giữa nhà xuất bản với bạn đọc, mà ở đây là các bạn đọc thiếu nhi. Và đúng là có rất nhiều điều mà chúng tôi thấy có thể học tập được, ví dụ những chương trình đọc sách rất linh hoạt, có khi chỉ là một góc nhỏ thôi, nhưng có những tác giả đến đọc sách hay ký tặng, hoặc có những góc sáng tạo để cho các em tự vẽ tranh. Nói chung là rất thoải mái, nằm ngồi, bò lê bò toài. Phải nói là ở Việt Nam không có nhiều hoạt động như thế”. Đối với chị Bích Ngọc, người nhiều lần tham dự hội chợ sách tại Pháp, có thể học tập về cách tổ chức quy mô cũng như sự đa dạng về hệ thống đề tài của hội chợ sách : “Tôi thấy họ thay đổi đề tài một cách rõ rệt. Ngoài việc tương đồng với xu thế của thời cuộc, nó còn thể hiện truyền thống rất nhân văn của nước Pháp. Và hệ thống đề tài sách khoa học xã hội nhân văn, tuy dành cho trẻ em nhưng thể hiện sự phong phú đến người lớn cũng cần học tập, cũng như những nhà làm sách cần phải suy nghĩ lại về cách thức, đề tài làm sao để cho không những chỉ dành cho trẻ em mà còn là sách dành cho gia đình, cho các bậc phụ huynh cũng như trong nhà trường. Chúng tôi cũng thấy mừng vì các nhà xuất bản của Pháp tổ chức được một hội chợ quy mô. Dĩ nhiên các nhà xuất bản đến là để bán sách, nhưng có sự giao lưu mà tôi thấy rất xúc động, vì sách gần như đến tận tay độc giả, dù nhỏ tuổi nhất. Ngược lại, độc giả mọi lứa tuổi có thể tiếp xúc với các nhà văn, có thể là các thần tượng của họ bấy lâu nay. Đó là một cách làm mà chúng tôi phải học tập rất nhiều”.

Encore bien peu connue des Français, la très discrète Première ministre, fonction oblige, se dévoile. « Élisabeth Borne, l'inconnue de Matignon », lance la Une de L'Obs. Dans cet hebdomadaire, le lecteur va apprendre que la Première ministre ne se sent plus vraiment de gauche et qu'elle était contre ce vrai totem de la gauche que furent les 35 heures, autrement dit la réduction du temps de travail. « J'étais là quand on a fait les 35 heures, mais je n'occupais pas le même bureau », dit-elle. À présent, Élisabeth Borne assure dans L'Obs que la réduction du temps de travail était « une erreur ». La Première ministre déclare dans ce magazine qu'elle n'était « pas du tout d'accord avec le partage du travail, c'est un raisonnement faux », selon elle. Du reste, bien qu'elle en soit issue, Élisabeth Borne n'est plus de gauche. « J'ai beaucoup évolué politiquement, déclare-t-elle encore dans cet hebdomadaire. Je viens de la gauche, mais je crois profondément au dépassement porté par Emmanuel Macron. » Seulement voilà ! L'Obs ne manque pas de rappeler que c'est bien auprès de dirigeants de la gauche française que la Première ministre a fait l'essentiel de sa carrière, Lionel Jospin, Bertrand Delanoë, Ségolène Royal ayant été ses mentors en politique. Du reste, Olivier Schrameck, qui fut directeur de cabinet du Premier ministre socialiste, a d'elle le souvenir d'une « nette inclination à gauche » de l'alors conseillère de Lionel Jospin. Vie publique-vie privée Aveu choc, donc, mais un plan com' ne va pas non plus sans confessions plus intimes. Quitte à dévoiler des souvenirs douloureux, comme lorsque, dans L'Obs, elle évoque le suicide de son père, qui avait survécu aux camps de concentration. Mais plus loin dans la lecture, changement d'ambiance, avec le très classique témoignage d'une amie anonyme, venue nous apprendre qu'Élisabeth Borne mange peu, le fait « quand elle a le temps », ou encore qu'elle est friande de « fraises Tagada » et de « Carambar ». Qui dit plan com' dit portrait croisé. Et c'est sans surprise que l'on retrouve la Première ministre dans l'hebdomadaire Le Point. « Il (lui) a fallu poser quelques actes pour s'affirmer, souligne ce magazine. Face à un François Bayrou qui critiquait presque ouvertement une erreur de casting, ou en donnant à voir sa différence d'approche avec Bruno Le Maire concernant la taxe sur les superprofits (…). Sur les retraites, après plus de deux semaines d'atermoiements, c'est la voie de la concertation, la sienne, qui a remporté l'arbitrage. » Et, là-encore, anecdote personnelle dévoilée par ce magazine. « Juste avant la passation de pouvoirs, la deuxième femme nommée à Matignon après Édith Cresson s'aperçoit que ses collants sont filés. Elle fonce aussitôt en racheter une paire au Monoprix du coin, se dérobant à la surveillance de ses officiers de sécurité, laissant ses conseillers interdits. » Édouard Philippe soigne sa droite Lui fut Premier ministre et il est de retour ce matin dans la presse. « Lui », c'est Édouard Philippe, qui plaide pour une hardie réforme des retraites. Il faut « bouger sur les retraites, bouger beaucoup », dit, dans Le Parisien Dimanche, le premier Premier ministre d'Emmanuel Macron. Édouard Philippe y évoque un report de l'âge légal « à 65, 66 ou 67 ans ». Un entretien qui aborde aussi son état de santé. Et c'est ainsi que l'on apprend que, « très récemment », ses sourcils sont tombés à cause d'une maladie auto-immune. Là-encore, la politique et l'intime… Décidément. Prime à la sagesse Travailler plus longtemps… Justement. Le ministre du Travail envisage d'autoriser le cumul salaire-indemnisation pour les seniors. Pour favoriser le retour à l'emploi des plus de 55 ans, « une des pistes pourrait être de permettre à un senior qui accepte un emploi moins bien payé de conserver une partie de son indemnité chômage afin de compenser le manque à gagner. Nous pourrons y travailler », dit Olivier Dussopt dans Le Journal du Dimanche. Évoquant le recul de l'âge légal de départ à la retraite auquel tous les syndicats s'opposent, le ministre du Travail le dit au JDD : « Il nous faut reculer l'âge moyen de départ ». Manifestation littéraire pour une France plus juste Cet appel, enfin, à manifester, à Paris, contre la vie chère. Date prévue, le 16 octobre. Signé d'une soixantaine de personnalités de tous horizons, à commencer par la toute récente prix Nobel de littérature Annie Ernaux, cet appel, publié par Le Journal du Dimanche, a été initié par des partis et organisations de gauche. Mais on y trouve la signature d'autres écrivains tels que les prix Goncourt Éric Vuillard ou Pierre Lemaître, ou celle du prix Renaudot Laurent Binet. Autant de grandes plumes qui en appellent à « un sursaut populaire pour résister aux régressions et rouvrir un destin collectif fait de justice, de solidarité et de responsabilité écologique », lors d'une marche, dimanche prochain, à Paris.

Pogovor je nastal kmalu po izidu romana Na svidenje tam zgoraj, za katerega je Lemaître prejel prestižno Goncourtovo nagrado. V slovenščino je delo prevedel Matej Leskovar.

[MUSIC] World War One THEN 100 Year Ago This Week [MUSIC TRANSITION] This week 100 years ago in both the Official Bulletin, the US government's daily war gazette and the New York Times,  there are stories about the first American Prisoners-of-war captured by the Germans. This got us thinking about the subject of POWs in WWI. What were the rules? I mean, the Geneva convention that we usually think of, when we think of prisoner of war “treatment” today generally refers to treaties from 1949 after WWII. Those were updates from 2 treaties pulled together in 1929 - And prior to the 20th century, the treatment and rights for combatants was pretty harsh - There were attempts to develop some kind of humanitarian standards through much of the second half of the 1800’s after the Crimena war. What WAS the story with POWs in WWI? How many were there? Did the Red Cross play a role? What about American POWs? So that’s the theme we are going to explore in today’s WW1 Centennial News THEN…   what was happening this week 100 years ago.. in the war that changed the world.   [SOUND EFFECT AND TRANSITION] It’s the first week of November, 1917. The Europeans have been at war for over three years, but early this week, as they are training in a relatively quiet area of the western front, a company of American Soldiers gets raided by a German force. 3 are killed , 5 are wounded and 12 Americans get captured by the enemy. [SOUND EFFECT] Dateline Sunday November 4, 1917 The headline in the New York Times reads: Attack Before Daylight Forces in Training Held Small Salient of the Front Line Trenches Pershing tells of loss And the story reads: Armed forces under the American flag have had their first clash with German soldiers---  in an attack which the Germans made on first line trenches, which the United States troops had taken for instruction --- three Americans were killed, five wounded and twelve captured. The Germans respond to the incident with a taunting article in Berlin’s Lokal Anzeiger newspaper [SOUND EFFECT] Dateline Sunday November 4, 1917 Another headline in the New York Times reads: Berlin Rejoices Over American Prisoners; Lokal Anzeiger newspaper extends a “Welcome” The story goes on to read: The Berlin newspaper played up the capture of the Americans in their headlines under the captions: “Good Morning Boys” and goes on to include: Three Cheers for the Americans. Clever chaps they are! It cannot be denied. Scarcely have they touched the soil of this putrified Europe when they are already forcing their way into Germany! It is our good fortune that we are equipped to receive and entertain numerous guests and that we shall be able to provide quarters for these gentlemen. However, we cannot promise them doughnuts and jam, and to this extent they will be obliged to receed from their former standard of living. Above all they will find comfort in the thought that they are rendering their almighty president, Mr. Wilson, valuable services in as much as it is asserted that he is anxious to obtain reliable information concerning conditions and sentiments in belligerent countries. As Americans are accustomed to travel in luxury and comfort, we assume that these advance arrivals merely represent couriers for larger numbers to come. We are sure the latter will come and be gathered in by us. And the propaganda war is in full swing from all sides as exemplified in an article published in the US Government’s Official Bulletin. [SOUND EFFECT] Dateline Tuesday November 6, 1917 Headline: German Soldiers, Forced to murder their helpless foes and prisoners. Germans tell terrifying details in letters In the story it reads: The Committee on Public Information makes public herewith three letters taken from one of its forthcoming pamphlets “ German War Practices”   Here is the protest of a German soldier, an eye-witness to the slaughter of Russian soldiers in the Masurian lakes and swamps: “ It was frightful, heart-rending, as those masses of human beings were driven to destruction. Above the terrible thunder of the cannon could be heard the heart-rending cries of the Russians… But there was no mercy. Our captain had ordered: ‘The whole lot must die; so rapid fire.’ As I have heard…. five men and one officer on our side went mad from those heart-wrenching  cries. But most of my comrades and the officers joked as helpless Russians shrieked for mercy while they were being suffocated in the swamps and shot down. The order was: ‘ Close up and at it harder!’ For days afterwards those yells followed me, and I dare not think of them or I shall go mad. There is no God; there is no morality and' no ethics any more. There are no human beings any more, but only beasts. I say Down with militarism. This was from a letter by a Prussian soldier as reported by the US government. From a wikipedia entry entitled: World War I prisoners of war in Germany, it states From the beginning of the war, the German authorities find themselves confronted with an unexpected influx of prisoners. In September 1914, at the beginning of the war, 125,000 French soldiers and 94,000 Russians are made captive. Early the following year in, 1915, the number of prisoners being held captive in Germany reaches 652,000 and then rises even more quickly. From February to August 1915, it goes from 652,000 to 1,045,000. One year later, in August 1916, it reaches 1.6 million, and then reaches just over 2.4 million prisoners of war by October 1918. This experience gives Germany a strong foundation in the implementation, operation and exploitation of large POW and labor camps, know-how they will employ again in the future. Preparing to deal with American POWs, the US government makes plans with the US Red Cross to help care for our captured doughboys.   [SOUND EFFECT] Dateline: Wednesday November 7, 1917 The headline of the Official Bulletin reads: RED CROSS PLANS TO FEED U. S. PRISONERS lN GERMANY The story reads: Arrangements for supplying food and clothing to American prisoners of war in Germany have been worked out in detail by the War and Navy Departments and the American Red Cross. Since the beginning of the war, England and France have met Germany’s inadequate care of its prisoners by sending supplies of their own, and in the main the system has operated successfully. To support American soldiers and sailors who may be captured and confined in German prison camps, the disbursing agent of the Red Cross at Berne, Switzerland, will be supplied with 4,500 tons of food immediately. This will comprise 1,800,000 individual rations, or enough to feed 10,000 men adequately for six months. Now… Surprisingly, these preparations are over specified. The fact is, that the US POW count winds up being pretty low at just above 4,100 soldiers - even with over 2 million soldiers in the field. This may speak to the nature of the American Expeditionary Force’s campaign style and few battles where the forces are captured wholesale. Contrast this with the currently on-going Battle of Caporetto - where 265,000 italian soldiers are captured by the Prussians. And speaking of the Battle of Caporetto - Two names pop up connected to that battle --- that  our listeners may be familiar with. Supporting the Austrians is a young German Captain - who will emerge in WWII as a major military strategist - Field Marshal Erwin Rommel - the Desert Fox. On the US side, there is a young ambulance driver who will emerge after the war as one of the giant figures of literature - Ernest Hemingway, who was wounded in this battle and used his experiences as a basis for his 1929 novel, A Farewell to Arms. These notes on the battle of Caporetto were sent in to me by my cousin Michael who is a military cryptologist  and who wanted to point out that the use of SIGINT or signal intelligence - strategic decoding of battlefield radio communications - played a key part in Caporetto - used by the Austrians to wipe out and capture Italy’s artillery! They fought in many of the great theatres of war: Gallipoli, Damascus, Gaza, the Somme, Ypres and Passchendaele. Right from the beginning, though, they were seen as trouble by the English Officers… They were brash, boisterous, undisciplined, they dressed improperly -- some didn't even shave everyday. But they fought like tasmanian devils and if you ever hung out with australians you’ll know that they were just being their very cool and very natural Aussie selves - considering the English officers as uptight arses. The Australians were also masters of slang, in their gruff-but-goofy style, so it’s no surprise that they came up with a wonderfully nonsensical yet descriptive term for an uptight arse: A dingbat! A bit of an insult: A bit of a description… The word itself - Dingbat - has earlier origins, being used since the early 19th century much like the word thingamajig, a placeholder for when you don’t quite know what to call something. Today, the word’s main use is as a computer type font filled not with letters but with symbols, shapes and objects - So if you always thought of Dingbat as a fancy asterisk... in world war 1 it was simply a different kind of arse... They're both astounded by how many meaningless phrases they come across (and references to how a book is "necessary"), and also talk about when and how to frame a particular author.
